Discussion keeps the world's turning. This is Round Table! Hello everybody! Pull up a chair and join the conversation from the heart of Beijing to the edges of the Globo stage. You are at Round Table. I'm Nyolin. Welcome to Las Vegas with us today, where the neon lights are bright, but the tech boots are brighter. This year at CES, it felt like you couldn't throw a microchip without hitting a revolutionary AI application. We saw everything from robots that could probably out-dance us to smart devices that seemed to know what you want before you do. Forget the casinos, the real high-stakes winning was happening on the showroom floor. Now, let's take a look at some of the highlights while also checking out how Chinese companies are doing this year. For today's show, I'm joined by Steve Hatherley and Yushan. Now grab your virtual compass and follow us to the heart of the discussion. For nearly 60 years, the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas has served as the industry's crystal ball, but the 2026 edition reflects a geopolitical or geopolitical and industrial shift that cannot be ignored. While US giants, like Nvidia and Intel, dominate the Bronx, which is the Chips and the Cloud, more and more Chinese firms are working with the body, with over 1,300 Chinese companies in attendance, and as staggering 40% of the innovation awards going to Chinese brands, the narrative has shifted from low-cost manufacturing to system-level supermacy. So which emerging trends on the global stage are you most eager to see develop and we can take a closer look at this year's CES? First of all, this is a massive show on earth. If you're a fan, if you're a fan of future tech, then this is it. This is where you want to be. In Chinese internet, people call it the Chinese Spring Festival Gala in technology. People celebrated and attended and it's widely regarded the first indicator of the technology industry for the year, because during the event leading global hardware and software technology companies showcase their primary technological directions and products and also innovative products expected to become the block busters in the coming year. So from what I understand, some of the products that are shown at CES are available for purchase now. Exactly. And I've seen some of the commercials online on, even in China, on JD.com, I've already they have a, like the whole page for that, you can find it on CES. Yeah, yeah, it's part of their advertisements and it should be for sure. Yeah, some you can buy now, some are not available for purchase just yet. There are certain products where the company will say, we'll roll it out at the end of 2026 and then other things we will have to wait longer for. But the whole point is it's the, it's the most updated tech show where companies show what they are capable of doing right now. Yes. And it's a consumer electronics show, which means that most of the product are for daily use, are for the kind of maybe not daily use at home. It can also be daily use in manufacturing lines. But these are the kind of technology that are put into real life that are put into use. And we see the CES 26 is a four day tech trade show held in Vegas. And it received a record breaking total of over 3600 submissions across 36 product categories and with over 2.6 million net square feet of exhibit space. I understand now how calm is such an excitement for the enthusiast. You can just go there and it's your very own playground. I mean, it's more than a playground, it's 12 city blocks. Yes. That's the biggest, that's the biggest playground in the world. Yes. And when it comes to Chinese participation, we do see a strong presence. Yeah, Chinese companies are maintaining a strong presence and growing influence at this global technology showcase. And China was the largest foreign participant at CES 2025 with more than 1,300 companies in attendance. And according to China daily, in this year, Chinese firms secured a substantial share of the prestigious CES Innovation Awards. An analysis of the honorees directory found that more than 100 of the 247 total entries are all from China. To the consumer electronics show or China electronics show. Well, we'll take a look because we should definitely go into details of the examples because there are really a lot of fun toys, excuse me, tools that we can use in our life. There are so, so many. And one biggest, one of the biggest trends or product categories is the robots, right? Chinese manufacturers are rapidly becoming the global leaders, being specialized and also practical robotics, particularly in the smart cleaning and outdoor maintenance sectors. One example is this Robo Rocks Saro's Rover. It is a stair climbing vacuum machine. I watched the video, I watched about 100 videos this morning from CES. This little vacuum cleaner has legs. So your typical robot, it does. So your typical robot vacuum cleaner looks like a disc and it sits on the floor and it moves around, you know, smoothly. This has legs on the side that fold up so it can still sit flat on the floor. But when the legs need to be deployed to go upstairs, they can actually do that. It looks a little bit, so what it does is the legs pick it up and then the robot vacuum cleaner like puts its chin on the stair and then it kind of pushes forward. It looks like a baby puppy, how that would walk upstairs. And then it pushes, it uses its legs to push itself on to the first level of stairs. Then it cleans that goes left, goes right and cleans the stair and then it goes up to the next level. So if you have stairs in your house and you want to clean your first floor and your second floor, you don't have to worry about it. The robot vacuum cleaner can do a robot. Oh, it does more than that. You can even pair it up with a pair of robotic arms so that it can pick up socks, dirty socks on the floor and put it into the kind of being used to collect your dirty clothes and then put them into the washing machine. And also, if it can do that, you can easily imagining it also install a kind of sensor to know what are the stuff should go and it can help push the, maybe your stool to the corner and needs to go so it does not only clean the floor but also tidy the room a little. Yeah. One of the standouts for me was from the Chinese companies that were representative, was Switchbot. Have you ever heard of the company Switchbot? They sell a lot of things like smart home devices, smart curtains or smart light switches, things that will help you with your household chores or things that will help you in your house. But they unveiled the onero H1 humanoid robot and it's a well-known company here in China, but they're not well known for their humanoid robots. So this was one of the kind of big unveilings from CES 2026 and this is an AI powered household robot with articulated arms for tasks like laundry and organizing and opening things. And from what I read, the robot itself will be available, the plan is to roll it out by the end of 2026. I was already on my apps this morning looking for it but it's not available. It's not going to be cheap but they do say it will be about under $10,000 but that stood out to me because we were having the conversation about home robots and I said, oh I think we're probably years away, maybe we're closer than I thought. Yeah. And the thing is that they have like wheels or in the way or the model of having two legs. That is the way that they are trying to develop and how fast it could be is the thing that we're thinking about. Of course, they are acting a little bit slow right now as we are seeing a lot of these videos and they're doing chores already but it's relatively slow. But maybe look at how fast the technology and maybe more specifically AI is developing right now, maybe two months ago, we're seeing very, very blurry images that they're generating and now we have so many high quality images they're creating. So maybe in this field of artificial intelligence and embodied AI, they can just do as fast as a human. Yeah. Very exciting. Very fast and faster and faster. But it's okay if you want to take your time doing more development and make sure that they are adaptable to all of the houses in different landscape as well. And speaking to the speed, I was reading a blog post about it from a popular tech writer and he said the speed at this point shouldn't really be an issue because if you're going to leave the house in the morning and ask your house robot, I can't believe I'm having this conversation right now. If you're going to leave the house in the morning and ask your house robot to do your laundry or your dishes or whatever, it doesn't really matter. They have a whole day to have the whole day so if they move a little bit slowly, it's not a big deal. It's not a big deal. And also we see that, besides the stair climbing vacuum machine, vacuum robot, the Chinese companies, even though here in China, we do not really have that to large percentage of houses with large yard, but still they're doing research in developing the super long more. Yeah, localization is one of the, I think, most fascinating thing that I've seen in these Chinese companies. They are developing maybe the needs that is not that popular here in China, but that is really popular in other countries, and then they have these lawn mower and also self-cleaning pool bot. That is just fascinating. I've seen the videos of that. They can, first of all, clean the one, two, three, four, five, five walls, five of the pool. And then they can float up to clean the things that flow in the water. They're like little scuba bots. Yeah. And then what they also can do is to make sure that when they're done with their work, they can guide themselves to a docking station where a robotic arm can lift the device out of the water to charge and clean itself. That's why we're calling it a self-cleaning pool. So no matter if you have a lawn, a large yard in your home or even a pole in your home, you can have different types of robots cleaning them for you. And what would you do with the time, with the time that you spare? Because of the help of robot, you can work. And now you can work anyway. So that's your answer. The thing is, I am very excited to see these kinds of technology being used to improve work efficiency. Because you can have more portable and bigger screens when you're using a laptop wherever they are working. Okay. Lenovo's rollable concepts. They showed off these incredible concepts for transforming laptops. And the Legion Pro rollable gaming laptop can expend horizontally from a regular 16-inch screen to an extra wide 24-inch ultra-wide display. And also the Thinkbat rollable XD concept is designed for productivity as well, letting the screen extent vertically from 13.3 inches to a taller 15.9 inches. If you're seeing it do that, they just gradually rise or extend and slowly changing from that kind of 16 to 9 ratio to something closer like 3 to 4 aspect ratio. Yeah, these are powerhouses and gaming machines. Yeah, typically if you want a game, you do it in your, I don't know, your living room or your basement or something with these huge monitors. Now your huge monitor is already inside your laptop and then it just extends out. That's really cool. Yes. And also we see when it comes to the area of humanoid robots, definitely UniTree is building a new one. They're calling it the fighter. It's a small versatile humanoid robot that the company demonstrated by having two of them engage in a robot fighting competition. I don't know why, but we are really, you know, happy and excited about robots fighting or robotic dog fighting and learning Tai Chi and playing these moves, partly because it's really fun to watch. Another part is that being able to see them performing these kind of very skillful combats also shows their capability. Yeah, and I think that's what it's more about, right? I mean, the boxing. The fun part is cool, too. Yeah, that's the fun part of it. But I think the whole point is to show their ability in their, in their movements. Exactly, demonstrate the robot's smooth movement and also physical coordination because they can not only fight with each other, they can fight with the human because I've seen some videos and people are just wowing about these kind of performances. Yes, and humanoid robots for sure, but robotic dogs, they can also help a lot. When they say help, it's like they can accompany you, be with you, speak the language you speak. Yes, Chinese robotic dogs can speak other languages as well and they can even help you with your shopping. And this is important if it is used in, for example, elder care, senior care. It can help people go to different places, even guide them and also carry heavy, heavy shopping bags for the elder consumer. So that is quite interesting. And another very cool thing that can help elder consumer not only move around, but even travel and enjoy life even more would be the excelskeleton. Yeah, these exoskeletons are amazing. There's one, it's a wearable robot suit from ULS Robotics called Viatrix and it's a consumer grade exoskeleton. It's like a lightweight motorized suit. You can use it for hiking, you can use it for outdoor activities and it uses an AI system to learn how you walk specifically. So it caters itself to you and then it provides power assist to reduce the strain on your joints and just helps people enjoy outdoor activities a lot more. If you're a little older, then maybe outdoor activities could be an intimidating thing for you and it might inhibit people from actually leaving the house to go enjoy nature. So this type of exoskeleton really helps out. Yeah, we think these help, it can make you like, make it things much easier. And speaking of exoskeleton, CGT and reporter Mark Neu in Las Vegas also interviewed Sha Fung, who is the co-founder of Ascentis, another Chinese exoskeleton company. He also emphasized that their open source modular design allows both U.S. and Chinese developers to contribute innovations. Sha Fung earned his undergraduate degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, his graduate degree at Stanford and now co-founded Ascentis, which has created the first modular exoskeleton belt. The belt incorporates AI to give me 88 pounds or 40 kilograms of lift, helping me walk with less effort up and down stairs and jump with greater ease. So actually, in this place, exoskeleton place is booming in China right now. A lot of places are using the exoskeleton to help people to walk and seeing it's like 200 to 300 RMB per time to rent and you can use it the whole day to just time in one time. It's a concept Fung wants to bring to the U.S. but with their brand new modular belt, that's open source so that U.S. developers can contribute their ideas to improve the product too. China has one of the most capable manufacturing and supply chain ecosystem in the world and the U.S. people have the most advanced software open source development ecosystem as well. And that's why we're building this exoskeleton hardware with open platform design that we can combine the innovation both from China and the U.S. He kept, well, he didn't keep saying, he mentioned a couple of times modular, what was he talking about? I checked the official websites of their products. It's caught modular because the exoskeleton is made of separate and interchangeable components or modules that can be attached and also removed or even customized depending on your own needs. Let's say if you want to go like a climbing and your knee is not doing that well so you can have the special designed things that can help the movement of your knees. So you can just which parts provide lift your legs or back or your waist and also developers can add or swap new modules to test these AI features, sensors, or different support so you can upgrade your, you can buy an exoskeleton upgrade a part of it without having to buy a brand new whole exoskeleton. Exactly. And that is the part that they call it modular because it can change the components of it. And this is not only very promising in the elder care sector, I can easily think about people who want a better figure or want to adjust their way of walking, the way they use their joints, the use their muscles to get the help from this kind of gadgets so that you can walk better, the repository can be better, it can be healthier so it can be worked in healthcare sector as well. And besides that one thing that is also quite closer to our work would be the visual technology since now CMG works with a lot of the kind of high definition screens around China and now we're looking at high definition or visual, different types of visual technology bring raising the bar for display quality, especially televisions, focusing on immense brightness and better color as well. Yeah, I've seen some of the TV programs showing that at the right corner saying it's an 8K video or program, but I was thinking, how can we watch a 8K video from my 1080p? Yeah. So these brands they're trying to make this like reality, so TCL, they push TV limits with this 4K LCD set, claiming it can reach up to 10,000 nits of brightness using its super quantum dot technology and this aim to deliver incredible color intensity and vivid picture quality. Yeah, that's one example. High Sense was well represented there to, they showcased the four color TV. So this television was huge, 116 inch mini LDE. It's funny to see 116 inch next to the word mini, but that's in reference to the LED I think, that's almost three meters long that TV. It uses specialized pixels and it's backlighting. It's a concept that they call RGB EVO to act as a fourth primary color. Generally the three primary colors are red, green and blue. So adding that fourth one results in an enhanced color and vibrancy, reproducing colors that most current TVs like the one in my house cannot do. And now with all these different types of robots, probably we'll be ready in market next month or next year for the really good ones. We see we can see the future of our homes be smarter and it can be a whole solution for your entire home. It can be, it can start with a smart window by saying window, I think I'm in curtains or window itself, yes, and also smart robots all around. They can accompany people taking care of your pets and maybe even your kid just a little bit and the whole solution in order to achieve that whole solution, we need a design for a smart home and that is also showcased in this year's CS. One of the aspects of having a smart home is the step that you stepping in, right? So smart lock is also a thing that we were thinking about. And one pain point of these smart locks is the battery life of these locks. And then locking presented their V7 Mac smart lock at the CES and they unveil on the features air charging technology because it is touting that it is the world first mass produced AI smart lock that features this air charging technology and this charging system caught or a charge uses a small transmitter inside the home to send a beam of I say of light that you can, I think you cannot see that light. But the lock receiver can get it, which converts it into continuous power and that means you don't need to replace or recharge your batteries and that is solving a common smart lock pain point. Yeah, it's just constantly being charged. Now one of the big things at CES is they have their innovation award. And if you just kind of want to look at a quick wrap up of CES, if you don't want to delve into all the deep stories, just go onto the internet and see which products won the awards and you'll have a few fun reads and a few fun watches of some videos there. Anyway, the innovation coming from China earned significant official recognition through awards. And this is going kind of beyond just being a part of CES, which is exciting in itself, but when you get that recognition, when you get that top honor, it's just all the better for your company and for your product. So the best of innovation winners, there's a Shenzhen based firm that secured several of the most prestigious best of innovation titles. And one of them includes the Yingling Co for its 8K 360 drone. Now you should and I were chatting before the show. And you almost bought one. I said in the beginning, some of these products are actually available for purchase now. And this is one of them and you almost bought one of these things and you were talked out of it. They have released their pot products and that is the first generation of their 360 8K drone because they offer you a gougle and you can wear them. And when you're flying this drone, you can actually see the surrounding in real time 360, which means it feels like you are flying yourself. And I've always had a dream of flying it with VR headsets you're thrown into a virtual world with this thing. You're throwing your throne on to the drone. It is a really cool technology, but you shouldn't with another kind of drone. It's even if it's not 360 degrees, it can still be like you're flying. But it's different. You can see, you can turn around 360 and to see the whole environment that you're at. So when you wear the headset, if you turn your head left, it's almost like you're turning the drone left. But you're not, but because the drone provides the 360 degree. That is pretty fun. And here in this year's CES, not only are we seeing so many cool technologies and applications from Chinese companies, other companies are doing pretty well as well. We see a, for example, this one is not very useful to be precisely described. I see this, I see this company from Singapore. When they are showcasing in CES that they are folding a paper pinwheel automatically without the control of a human. That's what their humanoid robots are doing. Yes, the robot can also play tennis, operate a Pellaroid camera to take photos and can converse with visitors in real time. And it can recognize playing cards, reasoning through game rules. But I don't think, I think none of those is as cool as folding a paper pinwheel. It's just something fun they're doing and showcases their abilities. The point is to showcase that it can actually do that. Yes, yes. What are some other technologies from other countries that excites us? Yeah, some of these brands are showing their like coolness products. Semsome Galaxy Tri-Fode. And this phone was crowned the official best overall winner of CES 2021 6 presented by CNET. I think that's the, the group of the name, the name of the group. And even press the judges, because it's a slim, foldable device that finally delivers on the promise of a full-size tablet phone hybrid that you can still fit in your pocket. And we also saw a Semsome display show off concepts for making foldable screens even better by removing their crease entirely. Yeah, that's one of the complaints, isn't it, that people have about foldable phones? Is that that crease that line goes down the middle? They claim here, Samsung claims that they've removed that crease. So it really is like a two-in-one product of phone slash tablet. As a young mom, I started to buy a Lego for my kid. And I'm very excited to see that Lego unveiled its new smart brick as part of the Lego Smart to Play platform. And this would allow the Lego Ubued to interact with real-time light sound and behavior responses without needing screens where apps. And now here, I don't know if you know this, but here in the Chinese market, a lot, a lot of extracurriculum courses have already labeled Lego playing as coding, because they do merge these two areas. Your kids can play Lego, but also design how their little robots would interact with the outside world. And I get to see that with the smart brick new development or application already, this can be, well, maybe someday a five-year-old would be able to create a robot that solved the problems that we see in our lives for a really long time. Who knows? But the things that is really interactive, and they have the sensors and chips, and they can detect the bricks that you're using. And one example, as I saw, if you were playing with a whole theme bricks of Star Wars, and when you put some mini-figuring with this brick, it will just react with the background music. Yeah, so like if you're building with the Lego bricks, if you're building a Star Wars ship, it'll make the engine sound, which is amazing. It'll play the audio when you have a specific character placed nearby. Goodness me, children just have it so good these days. Yes, their world is very, very smart. We've listed a lot of different samples and fun things, maybe because we are, all of us are very excited about these new things. Can I tell you my favorite part? Oh yeah, yeah, which one? Well, it applies to my life. It's called E-Cold Brew. I don't know where the company is from, but it's a cold brew coffee tumbler, and your typical coffee tumbler, you have to make the coffee outside and then pour it into your tumbler. But the top of this tumbler, you put the beans into the tumbler, into the top, and then it has a touchscreen on top, which is your digital screen where you set your brew settings, and all you have to do before that is put in water and ice into the main part of your tumbler, into the place where you'll drink from. You press a button, and it brews the coffee, it cold brews the coffee in five minutes, and then it's got a straw, you can just drink it straight from the tumbler itself. It covers the whole process. The whole process in it. Yeah, it grinds the beans inside. It's amazing. I mean, think about that. If you're sitting at your desk at work, right? You don't need to visit a coffee shop. You can just make it right there, or if you're out like camping or something like that, it just simplifies the whole process. That was my favorite product that I saw. And I think your favorite shows a very interesting trend in today's consumer electronics world. That is, instead of continuing to push forward for the development of technology, figuring out what is the most cutting edge tech that can be used. What people are now doing is going into the relatively medium technology, yet high design, kind of trend. That is, we figure out what are some real life problems that we need to solve. What are some real life scenarios that have this kind of need that you don't even know that you have that will raise the living standards of yours much higher. Yet, it does not require that, that cutting edge technology. It requires a smart design and someone who understands what's out there and combine them together. And that's one trend in today's world for sure. But besides that, there are some other development trends that we get to see. Exactly. Listening to the needs of the consumers and no matter it's about the products or interface and everything to meet the demands of the consumers is also one of the biggest trends in this year's CES. And about this, CGTN's reporter Mark Niu also interviewed Chris Pereira, a CES 2026 Innovation Awards judge and also the founder and CEO of Impact, which is a company focused on helping Chinese firms expand overseas. He answered questions about what Chinese companies brought to CES this year and also what U.S. companies can offer to Chinese enterprises. And what do you find are the strengths of some of these Chinese tech companies to come over here in the U.S. What do they have to offer? So, Impact, my company, our slogan is we bring the speed of Shenzhen to the world. I think the number one thing that almost every Chinese company brings is fast execution and very quick responsiveness, that's number one. The second also just as important is bringing AI to the real world. So AI plus hardware, you're seeing lots of robot applications here. So using AI to do real things in the world, not just in the cloud or through LLMs, it's really things, moving things, cleaning things, helping people. That's the second strength for Chinese companies and the third is the resilience. You know, Chinese companies have had it very difficult overseas the last few years and I think a lot of the investment that they've made in friendships and connections overseas are bearing fruit in 2026. And what do you think America or American technology or ideas have to offer for the Chinese company? I'm glad you asked that because I'm a huge supporter of U.S.-China cooperation. I think the world can be a much better place with cooperation. We see that here at CES. The largest number of exhibitors are from the U.S. Second is from China and the technology, the ideas thinking big is coming from the U.S. and China. If we think big in a positive direction, I think we can work well together. So in many ways, the innovation comes from the U.S. iteration and execution comes from China. So if that's combined, that's a powerful combination of new ideas and execution. Sorry to interrupt. I was reading another interview from him from Chris Pereira and he was talking about the tech sector here in China. And he said that now it's moving from low cost manufacturing to more end-to-end execution. And he mentioned iteration in the clip that we just heard. And the iteration cycles referred to the process of developing a product and then testing it and then releasing improvements to that product or the features in a shorter, more frequent time frame. So instead of getting these big and frequent updates like annual software releases, teams will push for smaller changes more often. That's what we're talking about with iteration cycles. And Chris Pereira was saying that China is really strong in that field. Yes. And when it comes to well, I think all of the trends are kind of intertwined and linked with each other. For example, we talk about China being able or being good at iteration. It also is because that it studies the real needs from consumers. I see a very interesting example that is for different types of electric cars, they acquire the kind of technology to make sure that when it comes to the old toll driving function, it can be safe. But if you're selling the car to a private buyer, the private buyer would be a bit more price sensitive, which means that installing two to four cameras around the car, making sure the car can be safe and on the road is good enough. Whereas if the car is so to a company that is escorting important people or sending or using their cars for these kind of special missions, they would install around, they should would install the cameras all around the car just because installing all the cameras would decrease the level or the percentage of accidents the car would meet. And that is more important to the consumers of these kind of bodyguards kind of cars. So for different reasons, for different to little niche ecology that you're aiming at, you are doing different special designs. Being practical is also one of the trends of a lot of these products, no matter from China or internationally. And their innovations focus on their improved perception, navigation, whole system reliability, showing that these products are moving from just experimental demos to products designed for some of these real and real life scenes. And Chinese firms are also advancing in some of these solutions, let's say energy and power solutions, including the smarter batteries, energy management and resilient systems that integrate seamlessly with apps and home environments to make the whole ecosystem even better and convenient to use. And another thing I wanted to point out is that yes, we see all these cool, exciting gadgets and technology in CS. But at the same time, there are the kind of little tools sketches that seem not that ready to hit the market. There are the kind of charging little tool being also demonstrated on CS. And I think this example is from last year, which never made to the market. That is, they have a huge platform, and the thing they're doing is a well-funded booth showcasing the AI for cars. And you have a son, the car identifies the track and album. But when every car already connects to a smartphone, who needs that? So there are these kind of developments or these kind of little innovation that never makes it to the market. And that is fine.
