John was actually Jesus' pretty much best friend. He took that claim. He was in the inner circle. Peter, James, and John. And he was an eyewitness to many of the things we're going to talk about. One John isn't a light and fluffy book. It's pretty in your face. And I'm going to try to make things friendly, but the reality is you can't mess with God. You need to get your stuff together. And one John has some very good things in that regard. Today's message is from one John chapter one, verses five to 10. But first, one John 5.13. It says why John wrote it. And he wrote it so we might know that we have everlasting life or eternal life. But everlasting seems to fit better. So you might know. When I first began to be a Christian, well, before I was a Christian, I sort of suspected God was true. But I didn't really want to follow God because I thought, well, it's going to be pretty boring and ruin my good life that I was trying to live. So I didn't want to submit to God's authority. I just wanted to do my own thing. But then as I started to pray to God, I started to believe in God and know His presence. And then it started to just become more, I'm pretty certain God's true. I believe very strongly. And eventually, I know God's true. I've had so many moments. I've had so many miracles happen. I've had answers to prayers that are otherwise impossible personally. That's not counting all the other people I know that are Christians that God's moved into their lives. God's called them. And that builds my faith as well. So I know. But do you know? And if you don't yet, I want to tell you the door is open to come to Jesus. And you can have the assurance of salvation. It's not good going through your life going, I don't know. I don't know. You need to know. Your donos are no good. You've got to know that God loves you and He has a plan and He has a future for your life. We're going to read 1 John chapter 1 verses 5 to 10. This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you. God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all. So we are lying if we say that we have fellowship with God, but go on living in spiritual darkness. We are not practicing. We are practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other. And the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin. If we claim we have no sin, we're only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned. We are calling God a liar and showing that His word has no place in our hearts. There's a lot in that text we've read. Today's message is called Walking in the Light because I believe Christians should live in freedom and live a life that is bright and shining for Jesus Christ. We're called to be lights to this world just as Jesus is the light to the world. At the moment. My wife, Heather, and I, we're going. It's not been an easy journey. Many of you would know Heather was diagnosed with cancer four years ago. It was absolutely out of the blue. And it's been a it's not an easy time. The doctor at that stage said. At best, you'll live four years. Last time we saw the oncologist, he said, I'm surprised you're not six foot under. Literally, that's what he said. It's really encouraging stuff. This. But they. They just being. Real with your predicament. And, you know, they're sometimes lacking a little bit of hope. Just recently, Heather had to go back on radiation treatment, which when she first was diagnosed, she had radiation. It was pretty taxing. And she's just had to have to do that again. And we had to go meet the radiation doctor, which is she's the head person in St. George Hospital. She's the top person. And it was an afternoon meeting pretty late in the Arvo. And she was a no show. But some other doctor came. In lieu of until she would arrive. And overall, the general tone of things, again, was pretty negative and pretty wasn't positive. But they're just telling you the facts. Well, then. The real the head honcho doctor came in and she was so lovely and bright. I'm thinking, what's what's this person on? She was positive. She was hopeful. She was saying, you guys, you can get through this. There's. There's an answer. There's a solution. I'm wondering why she's so positive. And then she said, you guys are Christians. And I went, oh, yeah, I forgot. You're a Christian. I'm like, oh, she is the top of the field. And she loves Jesus. And she said, your faith can make you well. Belief in Jesus Christ, the healer, can make you well. Don't give up. She was so encouraging. She believes in the science. She believes in the facts. But she also believes in the miracles. I'm like, oh, what a great doctor. I don't know who you are. But wherever you live your life, I hope you're excellent. You try your best at that, whatever your game is. But shine for Jesus because people are watching. We need people that live and breathe Jesus Christ in their workplace, in their home environment, wherever you are. Shine for Jesus. The overall teaching of the New Testament is come to Christ, but then live a life worthy. It's like you've got. You've got to get your act together. You can't stay, you know, in the shallows. You need to grow up. And if you've been a Christian for a while and you haven't grown up, I want to tell you, get your act together. Now, I had fantastic home group leaders, Dave and Alana Bates sitting down there. OMG. They were spiritual giants and helped Heather and I. I mean, George mentions the first time we went to home group. I was on our way to our first Bible. Bible study. And on the way, some loser cut me off. I'm giving even the bird. And then I rock up at home group and there he is. Oh, same home group. I got off to a dusty start, let's say. I thought, oh, no. They encourage us to read, to participate, to get involved, to grow. I wanted to know more. I was hungry. And that is normal. Normal Christianity. If it's just like you just come for an hour a week and you think that's going to do anything, no. You've got to fully trust and believe in God. Now, this text, let's bring up a couple of points. From the text, it says that basically, if you have a life in darkness and you claim to have fellowship, communion with God, you're living a lie. You can't have a foot in each camp. You can't. You can't get the split. You won't survive. You'll go one way or the other. You cannot do it. And this was a belief that was being addressed during the day because there was this heresy going around from a group of Gnostics. It was like the superior knowledge kind of people. They felt that, you know what? It doesn't matter what you do, what sins you commit, because if you're spiritually pure, that'll be acceptable to God. But you can just do dodgy things all day long. But if you're spiritually mature, and some Christians might live their life like that. It's kind of like I believe. I believe in Jesus, but I just act like a non-Christian all the time. Well, no, that's not true. It's like you are body, soul, spirit. The whole person, your heart is all those things put together. There's no division. You're one person, and that whole person needs to be surrendered to JC. Second thing we need to point out. If you say you have fellowship with God, you should have fellowship with other believers. Christianity. It knows nothing about being a lone ranger, an individual. It's all about the corporate. You're called to a body. The church is the Ecclesia. It's the called out ones. The ones called out. You've called on the name of Jesus. You're in it. There's no other way. It's the only group that survives planet Earth. The Ecclesia, the called out ones. And if you're in that group, you should have communion. You should have, that's what the word actually, fellowship means koinonia. It's more than just. having a cuppa and catching up and a little social thing. There's more a spiritual connectedness. What is God doing in your life? How did you come to faith? How is God working through your life? What's your gift? How do you participate? You need encouraging. And I love it if I can encourage someone in their faith because sometimes I see in people gifts, they don't even realise they're good at it. They don't even know. And vice versa, I sometimes, I don't think I'm that well. And I get encouraged. Everyone needs encouragement. We should be the most encouraging bunch of people ever. We have such a fantastic message. We have so much good news. So fellowship is not two fellows in a ship. I once heard a guy preach. He's funny. That's what he said. Anyway, it's deep communion. The text also says that God is light. Now, you might be wondering where God is. Sometimes people don't believe in God because they can't see him. You can't see God and live. Exodus 33, 20 says, for no one can see me and live. 1 Timothy 6, 16 says, he lives in light so brilliant, no human can approach him. No one, it's impossible to, it's God's too big. It'll blow you away. There's no darkness in God. But as scary as that light might be, 1 John also says, I think it's chapter four, verse eight, God is love. God is love. God is light, but God is love. And God in his love became a man, Jesus Christ. We can see Jesus. He's talking about what he saw. He heard it. He saw it. He was with him all the way through. He's the last living apostle. He's the granddaddy, probably the only one that was never executed for his faith. This is prior to him being exiled on the Isle of Patmos, where he wrote the book of the Revelation. John is a bestie and he is telling us that Jesus has come and Jesus is the light of the world. God loved the world so much. He sent his son. So none of us are without excuse. It's not like you don't know who Jesus Christ is. People use his name as a swear word all day long. It's like, you know, you need to look at what he said, what he did. He brings us to God. God's big and scary. I was thinking about, on my current math, did you know the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second? That's how fast light travels. And how big is the universe? Well, if you traveled at 186,000 miles per second from earth, you would reach the moon in one and a half seconds. You would reach the end of our solar system in five and a half days. You would reach the end of our galaxy in 100,000 years, so traveling at 186,000 miles per second. Recent sort of studies have shown maybe the Milky Way galaxy, actually the outer perimeter is more like 200,000 miles, well, light years, 200,000 light years. Back in the day, a hundred years ago, beyond our Milky Way, they didn't think there was anything, just clouds of gas and dust and whatnot. Now with the telescopes, the science and proof, it's all other galaxies. The universe is so vast, it's beyond comprehension. Jesus has made a way that you personally can have access to the God that made the universe. God is not small. He's bigger than the universe. The universe isn't bigger than God. God is massive. He has the resources. He has the life, the life. Imagine that. Like if your dad was a billionaire, you'd be thinking, this is not too shabby. Dad, can I have a super yacht? Bahamas looks nice. Whatever. If your dad is God the Father, you have, you've got to live like you're a child of God. Don't walk around like you're a pauper and you've got nothing. You have everything. Know your identity. You should be the most positive person ever. That's what I read when I see the Bible. Jesus is the light of the world. You can see the light of Jesus and you can go one or two ways. When you're confronted with your sin, you'll either come to the Saviour for forgiveness or you want to hide. And that's the way sin is. Sin lives and thrives in darkness. But to become a Christian, you've got to come out of the darkness and into the light. There's a story in Luke chapter five where Jesus goes fishing with Peter. They've been out all night. They've caught nothing. And Jesus does a little bit of teaching. Then he says to Peter, go out and have a fish. He goes, Lord, we caught nothing all night. I'll go out. Okay. You say so. He goes out and he throws the net into the deep and catches so many fish that the net's going to break. Another boat comes out to take the load. And then both boats have risk of sinking. And it's a miracle. This is what Peter said. When Simon Peter realised that what had happened, what happened? He fell to his knees before Jesus and said, oh Lord, please leave me. I'm such a sinful man. Jesus replied, don't be afraid. From now on, you'll be fishing for people. I believe that you don't really know how dark you are because a lot of you are really nice people. You're good looking people. You're in the shire. It's God's country. No, you're not. You have a terminal disease and it's sin and it's going to take you down. The only antidote is like to come to Jesus. When you get the Holy Spirit convicts of sin, righteousness, and the judgment have come. That's what the Holy Spirit does. This is what happened to Peter. He realised that he was in the presence of the Messiah, the Christ. And he went, get away from me. I'm sinful. But Jesus is so encouraging. He goes, don't worry. You're not going to be fishing for fish anymore. You're going to be fishing for people. It was prophetic. He was one of the pretty much, it was Peter and Paul show all of Acts. He was the main apostle for Jerusalem. He lived the life. But later on, he went fishing again, three years later in John 21. And much the same scenario, but it's the resurrected Jesus. He's offshore. And when he realises it's Jesus, he jumps out of the boat and wades and he runs to Jesus. He was like, he had a bit of a shocker. He denied Jesus three times. He was sort of not going well, feeling guilty and unworthy. And Jesus restores him. He goes, nah, you get up because your call was not to be a fisherman. You're going to be a fisher of men. You're going to catch people, catch their minds, catch their hearts because they're dark, they're lost and they need the light of Jesus Christ. And that's what he was called to do. And what a fantastic apostle. But it started with, I am too sinful. And then he ran. And when we've got sin, that's the way it is. It can go one or two ways. It's either going to go, get cleansed, get forgiven, accept what Jesus Christ has done, or just keep it on the low down. And I'll be okay. You will not be. Let's read John chapter three in verse 19 to 20. It helps explain this tension. And here it is. And the judgment, this is again, John, is based on this fact. God's light came into the world, but people love the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that what that they are doing is right. And that's what he's talking about. What God wants. So it goes one or two ways. Normally people hide in the dark, sin thrives in the dark. But if you come to the light to Jesus, it's the best disinfectant, light, best disinfectant. They say that, you hang your clothes out, the light of the sun, best. I'm going to quote C.S. Lewis. And he says this about sin. Fallen man is not simply an imperfect creature who needs improvement. He is a rebel who must lay down his arms. Fallen man doesn't need a few improvements. He's got to surrender totally. I've been a rebel my whole life. I rebelled against everything. If someone told me not to do that, then I would just do that. I disobeyed every teacher. I drove them up the wall in school. I was an outstanding student. Yes, that's work. it was just, but I'm not the only one. You're a rebel. You might be a gin-toned rebel. You might be a very successful business person rebel. You might be a really kind rebel or you might be a nasty piece of work rebel. It doesn't matter. You're still a rebel because it's in the human DNA. The world has fallen and we're related to the first rebels. It's in the DNA. The only cure is the gospel of Jesus Christ. He paid the penalty for sin. Sin thrives in the darkness. Son is the best. The son of God is the best to get the cure. Let's read the end of, or the beginning of the next chapter in John. This is our last reading. And the time is going, mama mia. Wow. 2 John 2, 1-2. My dear children, I'm writing this to you so that you will know. Not sin, but if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins and not only for our sins, but the sins of the world. So the whole world's sins technically are forgiven, but it just, they have got to come into Jesus. The whole world has the potential to come to Christ, but a lot don't. God is saying, come in. You can be forgiven. The atonement, like that word there, like it's propitiation. That's a good word. It means there's a lot of sacrifices, but there's only one that takes away the sin of the world. And it was God taking on human flesh. God dying for the sins of the world that he made. Stepping in the place. He's the only one that could do it. His justice was, satisfied because the law was broken, but also his mercy is met there. He paid the penalty. You can be forgiven off scot-free. So when you do something dud, something wrong, you are going to do something wrong because all Christians sin. You need to come to Jesus and ask for forgiveness. But it's not like I sin and I'm not a Christian. Sin will just slow you down. Hebrews 12 talks about the sin that easily besets us. It was, it sways us down. It trips us up. The devil wants you to trip and be slow and not do hardly anything. But Jesus wants you to stand and run the race with endurance. I want to look at just the last thing I want to say. How do you walk in the light? Five practical steps. Everyone loves steps. I actually had about 15 and Heather said, it's too much. So I'm not kidding. One would be God's word is a lamp to your feet, a light to your path. Psalm 119 verse 115. How do you know where you're walking if you don't have God's word to guide you? And you can't just wait for Sunday to get the word. You can get one, get a real one, a Bible. This is my big print one. And I have a smaller print one. And I read it almost everywhere. Every day. I can't tell, like, I want to read it all the time, but sometimes things happen. But as a rule, I read it, I underline it, and God speaks to me directly. Susanna Wesley wrote a little note, put it in her son's Bible, and it said, sin will keep you from this book, but this book will keep you from sin. You want to get on the right track? Read the word of God yourself. You can read other books. I love what George said. You don't read too many other books. Yeah, but I mean, they can be helpful. They're not nothing wrong, but don't get it through a third party. You can hear from God directly by looking at His word yourself. And when God speaks to you, and God has spoken to me so many times, and I do not have time to tell you the stories. It was like, wow, this was written 2,000 years ago, and God is telling me to do this. And it always works. I didn't have to listen to a podcast or anything else. I don't think I've ever listened to a podcast. Anyway, I'm old school. Get a Bible, read God's word. Otherwise, you'll just be a malnourished Christian, and they're no good. Put on Jesus. Ephesians 5.1 says, So the idea is, you're not very good, or you need to be better. So just pretend to be good. Pretend to actually care. Pretend to be nice. Kids pretend all the time. They pretend with their little, you know, stroller. I've got a grandson, and he's got plastic tools. And once he came with me on a job to fix a pill table at Rudy Hill. Wonderful place. And we go in on a Saturday. It's filled with men drinking beer, and watching a footy, and having a punt. And little Rugo goes in, and he gets over to the other side of the pill table with a little plastic hammer and screwdriver. He's thinking he's actually fixing it. He's like, what? So cute. Oh, I love that kid. Anyway. But we're a little bit the same. We just start baby steps when we become a Christian. God wants us to start to act like we belong. Act like it. So I started actually being kind at home. I began being a good son, let's say, and a better brother, and a better mate to some people that I really didn't like so much. God was starting to change me. And it affects you. And it's so wonderful. You turn to, I don't recognise the person I am now. The one I used to be is totally, it's history. So occasionally people bring it up to me. Do you know how bad you were? I don't even want to know. I don't, honestly. I'm going that way, and I'm not looking back. I'm onward and upward. They used to have these things in the Christian bookshop. What would Jesus do? WWJD. Little bracelet. I'm not a real jewellery kind of guy. But, you know, if that's your go, well. And the number one thing, stolen in the Christian bookshop, was WWJD. Go figure. That's ironic. What would Jesus do? He'd knock it off and put it on, wouldn't he? No word of a lie. So we've got to be sanctified. It's both a gift. When you become a Christian, you are 100% pure with Jesus. But then you've got to work out that sanctification. And that's the more tricky bit of being a Christian. And you can do it with the Holy Spirit's strength. It's not you trying to be good. It's allowing God's Spirit to bear fruit in your life and give you the strength to do what He calls you to do. Three, daily repentance and confession. Keep it short. Don't let it go too far. If you know you've had a shocker, get up the next day or even before you go to bed. But the next day, just say, hey, God, I'm sorry. Forgive my sin. And not that your sin was going to take you to hell, but your sin will wreck your communion with God. If you grieve God's Spirit, it's just a bit sour. It's not a sweet relationship. You're meant to have tight communion with God. That's because you deal with the offence of sin by confessing it. You're going to heaven. You're a son. You're a daughter of God. But forgiveness is not about the sin. It's about the relationship. And actually, God wants us to be perfect. Do you know that's in the Bible? Matthew 5, 46? I think it is. 48, 46, 48, 47. Go to the middle. Jesus said, be perfect like your Father in heaven is perfect. He wasn't joking. He's calling us to perfection. And one day it'll happen. Not this side of eternity, but you'll be fully rid of sin. You'll have everlasting life and you will fully realise your acquittal, your right standing with God. It'll be all clear as day. And you'll see God and you won't burst into flames. You won't crumble up. It'll be wonderful. Shine your light. If you're a Christian, Matthew 4, 5, 14 talks about shining your light for Jesus. Let people see your good works. So you should shine for Jesus. Don't put a basket over your light. Don't put a bucket over your head. You've got to live for Jesus. You've got to shine the light for Jesus. Because not only will you start to walk more confidently because you start to realise God's true. I did. My brother became a Christian. I didn't put it. I said, Pete. Pete's preaching this morning. Morning up at C3 Ballina. He'd become a Christian. He'd become a minister. Go figure. It's so good to share your faith because it has a good impact. How could you hog it? How could you? I know the answer of life. I'm not telling you. Sometimes I know you're with people and they think Christians are losers and they go, what did you do on the weekend? You go, well, I did this, this and this, but I won't mention the fact I went to church. Maybe just say, hey, yeah, I went to church. Hang out with, I'm one of those. I was. Shine your light that you might proclaim. I try to share my faith. I try to do it as much as I can. I'm a little bit outgoing, but everyone's cool too. When I go shopping with Heather, she might be looking at dresses. Well, I'm not interested in those. Not my go. So I'll talk to the sales staff. And Heather says to me, they don't care. they don't care. And I go, I know they don't care, but I do care. And I'm going to talk to them. And if I can get into the Jesus conversation, I will. I will do that. I tried to talk to a lady the other day where I was stuck behind her. I'm in a hurry. She had the trolley stuck in the thing down the escalator. So I couldn't have a take. I just had my little bag. She was a grandma. Well, I thought, I said to her, I'm grandma duty today. And she goes, oh no, it's mine. Did someone say KFC? We've all had those moments. I wish the ground could have opened up. But she was lovely. She said, yeah, I know I was a late starter. 60? Like, oh, we had a laugh. It was all right. It was good. Don't partner with unbelievers would be the fifth one to do in regard to walking in the light. Really important. If you become a Christian and you already have some kind of partnership with people that aren't with Jesus, there's not much you can do about that. There might be changes to take place in the future, but particularly if it's a marriage, you wouldn't resolve it. You would sort of work through things. But if you are not tied in with anybody, the Bible's saying, like in 2 Corinthians 6.14, how can light live with darkness? How can you be yoked with people who are unbelievers? Because they'll be wanting to go that way. And God's calling you this way. And you're stuck. And it leads to really hard tension, really difficult. And you've got to make some hard, it's not easy, hard life choices. When I met my wife, she was my girlfriend. That took a bit of work. And she. We finally went out. And I knew she was the right one. But she didn't want to go to church. We went to church once and she said, that's it. I'm not going. I went next week without her. And I thought, well, I'm going to put God first, not the girl. God. And then the girl. See, sometimes people put everything else. No, no, no. Trust God. If that's the right girl, he'll sort it. And he did. He sorted her. I think we've got a picture I think we've got a picture. So that was taken. Heather was 17 when I became a Christian. I was 19. I was a little bit older. That was at a youth kind of thing. We went to some carnival thing. And that was about the age. We were married less than a year after that photo was taken. We had no idea what we were doing. I'd never even lived out of home. What a blessed journey, because I put God first. I didn't go, well, I don't want to risk this. Listen, if you haven't given it up, it's not a God thing. You've got to lay it down. You've got to lay it down and then just see what God brings back. It's not easy. It's not easy, but it is life-giving. It is liberating and it will free you. You don't want to be stuck in something that God does not intend for you. That's going to hurt, pain, et cetera. So don't partner with unbelievers, but we certainly can mingle, we certainly are in the world, but not of it. So it's very important. We're not this holier than our, and we're just this little, we're called to be a light to the world. And you are called personally to walk in the light and be a great example of Jesus. For you, there's some people, you're the only God person they're going to meet. You're the only Jesus. You're the only Bible they're going to read. And I hope that you pray that God will use you and speak through you. And you'll be a blessing to those around you. That's what your heart should be. Just in finishing up, I like this Bible verse, Proverbs 4.18, because it is a really optimistic one. You might not have noticed, I'm slightly optimistic. It talks about the way of the just, it's like the dawning of the sun. It's just like sun's coming up, but it gets brighter and brighter until the full day. In other words, as you journey following God in his plan and purpose, it gets brighter and better. You'll grow in maturity. It's wonderful. I've been following Jesus a real long time. I've muffed up a lot of things in my life, but I've always come back to the reality of forgiveness, confession, and sorting my stuff because I want to soldier on. I want to live for Jesus and shine for Jesus. And I made that decision. Sometimes it's not easy. As I said, we're going through a time, it's tough, but I know God is love. God is good. And he is faithful. How about we stand to our feet? I'm going to close in prayer. I'm not sure where you're at with God. Maybe there's things in your life you actually need to confess with somebody. We don't have confessional booths here, but you might have a Christian you trust, or a leader. You can come out for prayer and it might be something you've got to just bring into light and get help for. It might be something that needs a bit of counselling and a bit more professional help later somewhere else. It's a good thing to be clear of sin. The wages of sin is death. And I love that the church should cover sin in that we should shelter, embrace. Christianity is a religion for sinners. This is the one. There's no sin too big, bad or ugly that God can't forgive. Just got to come to Him. And Christians, the church should embrace you. The church will love you. Be compassionate. They were to me, they were so much kind to me. I have rough edges. Anyway, I'm going to pray. And I don't know where you're at, but as we pray, if you want to call out to God and ask Him to shine the light in your life and heart, then do so. Let's bow in prayer. Thank You, God, for sending Jesus, Your Son, so we can know and experience Your love. We can know and walk in the victory that You've provided. And we can walk in the light. I pray for every saint here that they would walk in the light. They would shine the light. They wouldn't be embarrassed. They wouldn't be in shame. And God, You'd use them to reach a world that is pretty dark and pretty bleak. Father, if there's anyone here that is not, walking with You currently, if you're that way, just ask Jesus now, help me believe in You. Come into my heart. I want to know You're real. I want to know You're true. I want to know Your presence. I want to be forgiven. I've got things that are not right. Help me. Save me. Jesus is the Saviour of the world. The Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. He can do it. Father, bless this church and bless today. And now may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us now and forevermore. And all the saints said, Amen. Bless you. Just one thing.
