Now, let's get this podcast started. My guest is a senior quality assurance engineer, educator and founder of Road to QA. Road to QA, which is a trademark, by the way, is a self-paced career development platform design to help adults pivot into tech through quality assurance, which is QA and software testing. Beautiful beginners and working professionals, the program combines step-by-step learning, community accountability, and practical experience to prepare participants for long-term career growth and AI-driven companies in this economy. Please welcome the Money Making Conversations Masterclass, Jennifer Gattas. How you doing, Jennifer? - I'm doing all right, are you? - So Jennifer, let's talk about you now. Give me some background on you. Well, let's see, I don't have a college degree still to this day. I am a mom of a 17-year-old and a 23-year-old. I accidentally made my career pivot in 2021. And I accidentally had a few title loans in my car, some ponds to keep rent paid. And I knew I needed to do something different. And I actually came against, I learned about quality assurance from someone online and I started studying it within 90 days after having COVID and being sick and having the title on on my car. I landed my first yes intact within 90 days. And I went from $40,000 to $80,000 and $80,000 to $160,000 and $160,000 to uppers of me and my husband having a house or a 400K remote. Because then he got into quality assurance. And from there, I helped my brother, my cousin, my sister, my best friend, all in QA roles in that year. And then I accidentally launched my company because now I helped over 200 people land their first yes intact. And so all from me just saying yes to myself and saying, I'm worth more and I can get paid more even in a career. This is a money making conversation. All right. Now, with that being said, why are you on this show? I want to show because you know, you're hearing a lot of people talk about AI and layoffs and you know, you don't know which way to go. I want to inspire people to not be afraid of it, but to work alongside of it and to find opportunities even in a career. Even though you, you know, may see the layoffs company still have to decide how they're going to implement AI inside of their company. They are then even with the implementation, what jobs and how would the responsibilities actually should. They're still human oversight and human and all the activities that need to be done. So how can you take who you've been up to this point, add new skills and become the person that still works alongside AI? Now let's talk about what you said earlier. You are senior quality assurance engineer. What is that, Jennifer? So essentially, I get paid the test software. So those apps on your phone, they all got to be tested, right? Even Tesla, they have quality assurance engineers, right? And I like to say the difference in your paycheck is your skill set or the difference in your skills. Skillful type or the difference in your skill set is your paycheck, right? So the more skills you have, the more you can also get paid. Now, because you mentioned this path, this upward path of income that you got, what got you in that direction? What made you-- because let's put it this way, tech-- I will tell people you get paid with people value you to be. I always have believed in. So that's what you just spoke about. As you gain more value, people paid you more. I will tell people if they're afraid to lose you, they'll pay you to keep you. In this situation, quality assurance, which we hear a lot, that's a position that you are getting paid as a full-time employee. Yes, I've even had contract roles too, but I am currently in a new full-time direct hire one, as a leave. Yes. And so you're testing cars. I was just telling you to test software. They're quality insurance. People are testing food, testing wood and beams, and all that. But you've chosen the technical lane of quality assurance and benefiting because of that. How did you make that choice? Yes. So essentially, I'm testing program, software, and applications, technology. So you say that testing, what do you mean? Tets, so I'm making sure that it does what it's supposed to do. So when this person comes up with the idea and says, let's just say Wendy's. Wendy's came up for the concept that they want a new POS machine so that people can ride up and place their order. They even have AI doing that too, I tested it too. Well, you actually, they ride up and they take their orders. Someone still had to test to make sure that when the order is placed, that information gets to the person receiving the order. I love this. I love this because this is what we're talking about on the show. Because people always worry about technology taking jobs. You're saying that, Rishan. I am here to let people know you use technology to give you a job. It's not. Let's talk now, Jennifer. It's money making conversation. You know what we're dealing with that little, that little stash tip. And you got the cousin involved, your family involved, and family family involved. Now all y'all sitting around the back, Bob, and cute. In good. In good because of QA. You know what, that's actually very honest. Yes, it is. I don't even know if he was that close before then. Well, you know, the thing about it is that, you know, we as black people, people of color are always at the end of the line. Looking over somebody showed the complaining, complaining. You're not complaining. You are a doer. Why are you a doer, Jennifer? Well, I think it all started because for me, I grew up with my dad. He used to drive the bus, so he retired. And I was just telling you recently in Chicago on CTA, right? He drove the bus. He retired. My mother, she just retired at 60 from working from the government. For 38 years. Now, I don't know if I should stay my age out loud, but I'm 41. I hadn't been in the job long enough anywhere to have that type of pension to walk away with. I have to build my own retirement. In order for me to do that, I had to make more money because $40,000 was not going to do it for me. So the reason why I am here is because I realized that my journey was going to be different. My journey was already different. I had my son when I was in my senior year of high school. I don't have any college degrees. I have a grandmother who has PhDs and all that. It's almost like I had to find a way to show that I'm worthy too. And so now I've been able to, even though I have family that has degrees and have had success, I've been able to be the one to now show them something different. Because of my career, I got to go live in Mexico and cobble for three years. My daughter at the age of 13 went to a school in Mexico as a young black young lady. Now, let me tell you, she didn't use my money to write. I pay for it. She could say a little bit, but I'm going to tell you she didn't. I'm going to tell you when you're married, young. That's what you pick up for. Maybe she wasn't young enough because now we back in Atlanta and know my goodness. So I plan to go back to retirement here. She missed it. She missed it. But it wasn't an easy experience, but it was an experience. I'm a young lady or a children, black children. and can actually say that they experienced that. - What was in your head that made you, that pointed you in that direction? - It's like going back to when I was talking about my father, I saw him do different things. He drove the bus and retired, but he also watched Windows. When he used to be on the bus, where we're gonna watch Windows and we'll have squeegees and stuff and selling the water office, my dad watched the Windows and they used to thought we was homeless. And I was looking at them like, "Ludel, do you know my dad got a $80,000, $90,000 CTA job?" We okay, right? And so I try to give him money that, but he showed me that even though he had his career, he still did his own thing on the side. - Still gonna be our part-time job. (laughing) - Big tip of y'all. - The tip of us, we get free Dunkin' Donuts and we even used to, for World War II, that's it. I think that's telling my eighth world's work and everything, we used to watch Windows for Dunkin' Donuts and famous footwear all of those. And so again, my dad helped me stay. - He was so right, he was a low-rise. - He was a low-rise, we were doing all that. We were doing all that now. I told you he was out there with him, okay? - So you went out there with him. - I would tell you this, you know, when you see black people doing something that's not normal. Okay, that's what you're not normal. Window washing, as for as a profession, is not normal. So people stereotype you as people who probably wouldn't be hired out there just doing a hustle. And so people perceived you guys, you're in your father's hustlers, and they felt sympathy and they gave it to you. Because I always like black people being in positions are seeking opportunities that aren't normal. And that because you were doing something that wasn't normal, people compromised your success story, correct? - Yeah, yeah, it was, I don't know how to really answer this, but it was hard. It's like I also had to, I had to believe in myself, but then I'm also helping other people who I actually felt up until the point had more success than me, you know? And so for me, it kinda the table's kinda turned. Like I said, I got to do things that my mother retired at 60, never really traveled. I got to live in another country on my own dime because of the work that I did before the age of 40. And so for me, there was a lot of situations where you also find who's really there for you in those seasons. When you're down, when you're up, a lot comes out of that journey of the same. - I got asked, living away three years, what type of work were you doing? - I was doing key work. So this is where I accidentally grew my company. So I, in another country. - In another country. - So this is, now obviously you go, I'm gonna be very transparent. We know that companies are a little tighter and stricter now with you going remote. So even like today, the company I'm with today, I can travel there, but they, you know, I have to tell them that I'm leaving. I couldn't stay there and live there. But when I first got into QA, I had a role that allowed me to actually move, that was okay with my location, but I had to physically have a laptop with me at all times. And so we just decided we're gonna go. Me and my husband and my daughter, we packed up, you know, 13 military bags and luggage and we got on Delta. And me and my husband visit there, we had never been to Cobboh, we went there for a week and by the end of the week we came back with a lease for an apartment. We said we was leaving in 30 years. - So what was your husband doing? What was he doing? - He was actually a QA engineer too. So what happened is that I actually, he was actually working a customer service. And so what happened was, I walked past him one day and he saw me working my QA role, but then I head landed a second role. So I'm working two of them 'cause at that time they were contracts, I'm working two at both. And so you tell them, so you said I'm making like 90 on one and 90 on another. And so I walked past him, he on a customer service call for insurance and I said, you can't even get up and go to the bathroom. Okay, he was mad at me. And with transparent, he was making about $40,000 too, 'cause we both came from that. He was working at home, so it was great. You're at home, right? But you know, and then he said, you know what, enough is enough. She not that smart. I'm like, I am that smart, you know what I'm saying? But essentially he looked at me as inspiration. And said, if she can do this, I can do it too. So within 30 days, he started watching me, learning from me and then he ended up landing a $55 an hour. So he actually went over me. Okay. And his first QA role was over six figures, higher than one of them, but both of my offers individually. Okay. And he landed his role and he became a QA engineer. So once he became a QA engineer by the end of 2021, my household would produce about 400 K remote. And we decided to just up and leave and leave the country. - Please don't go anywhere. We'll be right back with more money making conversations, masterclass. Not need for you to do me a favor. Right now, you'll follow or subscribe to money making conversation. It's free. And you can find it on the iHartRadio app, Spotify, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. Please do me that favor. Follow or subscribe, money making conversations. - Welcome back to money making conversation masterclass. Hosted by me, Rishan McDonnell. Money making conversation masterclass continues online at moneymakingconversations.com. And follow money making conversation masterclass on Facebook, X, and Instagram. - How did it lead to your business? - So we on the beach and I'm just sitting there shooting my real somebody said, you know, shoot Instagram story. So I just started shooting stories talking about QA. Now actually I was doing this before I left. So I actually my business had started building before I left. So basically behind us things, I was shooting IG stories and I was talking about a day in a life. I was saying what I did as a QA engineer. I was talking about how I went from customer service and technical support to being a QA engineer. I was talking about your transferable skills and how you're already a software tester. It's kind of my thing. I say, you're already a software tester. You just don't know it yet. So what I mean by that is those little moat with those apps on your phone. You're using them every day, right? So if you're using them, you are a, you're essentially becoming a subject matter expert, right? So every time you use it, you are operating as the user. And so if I'm on the other end testing it as a QA engineer, now I have to also be the subject matter expert because for my job, I have to know what it's supposed to do. So you as a user can use it correctly. And it can actually, and it can be used as it's supposed to. As it's actually supposed to. So I was shooting IG stories and I launched this ebook and I said, I'm putting out an ebook. I'm gonna show you how to be a software tester too. And I didn't make the product. I just said I'm outlining it. 30 people bought it for $97. I was like, oh crap. I gotta, I gotta make this. I gotta make it. So I made it. And it was an ebook. And so this was October 2021. I had already worked several QA roles. My brother, my cousin, all of them was in QA roles. So I took our testimonials and I said, let me show you how I can do it. So I was just shooting behind the scenes and I'll say what I did is a software tester, what tasks were. I made this product and by October 30 people bought, I made my first in K. Right? So now prior to that, I was working in customer support and technical support and I actually used to do Facebook as management. I actually used to work at Cartier, ClickFunnels, Building Funnels. And so I worked behind six figuring seven figure brands already. And I actually stopped that and that's what actually got me always to this point because I was tired of watching everybody else brands grow. And I'm supporting them and I'm gonna let them I'm stuck at 40K. No remote, but I'm stuck at 40K. So that won't work with me no more. So I need to say, I launched this product and people bought. So October, people bought, but it's going into the holiday season. So I'm not thinking nobody's gonna tell me they got a job. Now mind you, I do believe that what I do, what I say it works. But J-Ware comes around, somebody says, I got a job. Oh, the crap. I'm thinking someone that didn't know me took just my videos and my ebook and landed a job. Well, by January, 2022, I started having people land a job by the end of January, 2022. I have 45 people in jobs offer that little ebook and master classes. Then I kind of, I started increasing the pricing by 2023. Another 50 people by 2024. Another 50 or so people 2025. We had almost about another. Obviously the market was a little crazy this year. We had about another almost 40 people in 2025 land jobs. So that's how now help 200 people get to tech. Now your company's called road to QA. It's up to website. www.roadtqa.com. When they go to road to QA, let me get you right. Road to QA is trademarked by the way. Right. What's the experience? What are the fees? Well, the experience is enrollment. So I would actually say go to roadtqa.com/free and you can actually watch my free master class train. And so I'm going to actually show you how you're already a software tester and you just don't know it yet. So everything that I've been telling you is what it is. What talkters were, how are they already, how am I, I was sure I make down a software tester and don't even know it? Because you sit down in his apps and you're playing with him. You're logging into your laptop. Well, when you open your laptop, generally, I mean, that sometimes we looking at the book, right? But essentially-- Never, never. Never made it. Never made it. Right, you're even exploring it. Well, as a software tester, I also explore the software to make sure, let's see if I find anything. So it's almost like you're doing a task and don't even know it. How do you make your revenue in your road to QA? The whole point is we have two programs. We have a 90-day jumpstart. One of them teach you the skills and knowledge and the expertise to become a QA engineer. And then in that, you get mentorship. So I have a team of eight. So that is another great accident. I did not know that I was a kid. I was gonna end up growing a company that had to meet so many people. I just thought it was gonna be me, am I gonna e-book and make a little $10,000 a month? Well, I've been able to, I don't know what I should or shouldn't say, but I have been able to see money come faster, accidentally, but in a great accident. Also, as a business owner, learning how to do money better. When you're coming from 40K, and you jump upwards and you see money different and faster, and more you have to learn that 40K mindset got to go away. Because now you have to manage money a whole 'nother way, 'cause Uncle Sam gonna come get you. So, but, and then on top of that, you have to be able to understand how you're gonna grow and scale, how you know where and when do you add funds to add employees or increase. Or the hard decision of taking positions away too. Even as a business owner, I've had to make decisions where I've had to say, we don't need that position anymore, but we're gonna retailer and here's what we need. If you have that skill, we could put you here. But if not this from a profitability standpoint, this is what I need. - So, basically, okay, just was just speaking, okay. Senior quality assurance control engineer, right? - Senior quality assurance engineer. Not to work control, take that out. - Yeah, not because control is a whole 'nother different. - Insurance engineer, that's what you do four times. - Yes. - Okay, then you have another company that you started that is eight people are working under that umbrella and some capacity to play tonight. You need those people or your company cannot function. - So, I'll say yes and no. Because I have the skills that technically, I could run my company on my own. - But even with the full time job? - Yeah, good. Because of how I have it structured. So one of the biggest things is for me is alignment. And even though this is thing, everything, every business model isn't for everyone. So my company focuses on, it's solely like a one to many. I don't do it like a heart cohort because a lot of people that I am actually attracting there in full time jobs. You know, like when you're in full time jobs, you're traveling, I'm sorry, you're commuting, you have kids. It's hard to say I'ma be in class at eight o'clock every day. - Really? - You know, so my program is kind of autonomous within a road, itself a road, I go through the program at their own pace, but we do have weekly calls that you come to. So you can go through the program at your own pace. Now I, because I have a skillset, I can run every call and do everything in my company. - Are you using AI to do anything? - So as of right now, not technically. - You have shut up in the agents? - Yes. So we are actually now developing agents to do several things. But as of right now, there's things where I can use AI, like we're building AI, we have some AI to help with tools and resume and things of that nature and help people as they're transferring, you know, finding their transferable skills. But for my company as a whole, like for me to actually teach someone to skill, no, I don't have to have AI to do that. I can do all this on my skills and experience. I've had 10 different QA roles. I know how to do the job. - Why isn't it bigger? - Wow, why is it, um, can I be honest? - Yes. So I was on my way to actually skill my company, you know, and I have a family circumstance that brought me back to Atlanta. - Okay. - So it's actually why I'm back. I've been there since last year, 'cause if you ask, I wouldn't be back here. I'm be honest. I'm be honest with everybody. I would not be in the US. I'd be sitting in Kabul off of each right now. So, but life happens. And I like to always be an example of the honesty, 'cause a lot of times, you'll see people online like life is just so good. And I don't believe that we should all be, you know, always tell our private stories and everything, you shouldn't share everything. - You shared a lot of my shows. (laughing) Never just put the brakes on you. But I do, but I had to come back because my family is going through a circumstance that needed me back here. - Okay, got all that. - And so, - Why that is nothing to do with my questions again. - I don't know. - That sounds like a valid excuse that is nothing to do with you. And say it in this business, 'cause you have a phenomenal business model here. - What got, okay. So to answer your question is, I basically took a break where I almost decided not to keep my company because of the family circumstances going on right now. - You cannot let that interfere with your greatness. - Well, I'm not, I'm not anymore. I started, I started moving back. I started, you know, repumping the brakes. You, I started reprumping the brakes about September. - Thank you. - So. - You're special. - And it did help me win other people. - You said 41. And you got this in your head? - Yeah. - You know, you know, this is special. You know, like I said, I have a lot of interviews. You know, sometimes I'll be doing interviews. I'll be going, okay, I heard this before. I heard this before. Or I can take you there. I've never heard this. And, and I'm impressed by you because you develop a model that's been sitting out there that is a money maker not only for you, but people who buy into it. You should be sitting there saying 2,000 people. Not 200 people. I mean, I don't know if I could say it's on camera, but I mean, my business have done almost 20. My company has done almost $3 million in since 2021. My accident. - They should be doing 9.8. - I would say that and I believe that. - I'll just tell you, you know, you can sit over here. You can be on a car, but we have 400 people right over you. Okay. Sitting in Jamaica. - Right. - It don't matter. - Well, and I will be transparent to say, we also push the brakes too because I did bring in someone else to help with curriculum design. So even as a, you know, even though I have skills, even though I have certain skills, right? There are still skills that maybe I don't have. So I had to bring someone in so that they can teach that skill. And so we actually read about teacher skill. - So like for instance, QA is essentially me testing the software manually without a tool, software automation. But now you have QA automation, which is what we're seeing more in the market, right, with AI and everything. So that's now a higher level of skill set as a QA. So now we're taking all the things that we do from a testing perspective, but now we're using a tool like playwrights to actually automate testing. So now that does actually need someone that has programming or coding experience. I needed someone to come in and develop that actual side of the curriculum. So I brought in someone that's been in for 14 years who I actually met on my QA role. You know, I've been friends for four years. And he helped me develop that track. And we started actually beta testing that on other students that's already landed roles with my company. - Jennifer, do you have an Afro tank? - Do I go? - No. - They've never invited you to speak. - Anybody invite you to speak? - I mean, I've done a few podcasts, but so can I be honest, my husband is the one pushing me to do like more podcasts. I'm kind of like a, I like to just run my company and quiet. I actually get-- - Look at this face. (laughs) I see. - You amazing. - Thank you. Thank you. - It's not even a question. I've tried to figure out how to invest in you. That's how much money you can make. You know, if you pitched your story to a VC, a venture capital, they were investing you a lot of money. Because the upside is incredible. - Can I be honest with you? - Did you be honest? - Okay. - So you talk about VC, right? Now, I will say I like to keep a lot of my own without everybody in there. - Absolutely. - But I will say there is a, when, on the first few years of my business, I told you I launched a company in like a $97 ebook, then we kept raising the price, it was $2.97, $3.97, $4.97, $5.97, where now our program is anywhere from $17.95 to $2.99. 'Cause now we have a track. - Two of you are waiting for it. - $2,999. - $2,999. - It started when? - It started at $97. - Because. - I almost kicked you off my show. (laughing) Really, I almost kicked you off my show. - Why? - To go from $97 to $3,000. What's happened, how many years? - Five. - And people still buying it. - Yes. - Okay. - Okay. - Why? You know, so my husband fussed at me and I've had many people fussed at me because of my price point actually stood where it was too long. I had someone tell me before the program should have been like seven grand in things of it nature. But my heart all the way sticks with the person because I came from 40K. - Absolutely. - And so as of growing business owner, you have to aspect where, because I had my different roles at the time, 'cause at one point, I was working like three QA roles. We just gonna say that, not now, at one point. So with that, I did, I don't wanna say charity, but it was to a point where my company wasn't actually making money. It was almost like it was just paying for it, so. Because what was happening was that I was growing the company at an employees, but the profits didn't make sense. Right? Because I didn't know I had never been a business owner before. I just saw people laying a job. So I'm just on the cause, I'm doing whatever. And I got my QA roles, I'm making six figures already. I don't care. But then when you start looking at the numbers, you're like, why am I doing this? You know, I'm cross between, I wanna help this type of person and realize them, but this person still gotta believe in themselves and say, yes, they gotta find you. They gotta find, they gotta find the way to say, I'm gonna invest in myself, just like I had to do. And so for me, I was cross between raising my prices. So for me, I never wanted to be like a Perano 789 grant. But I do want to be a profitable company. So for me, that's why my business model is it's not a hard cohort is self-paced and the time you know autonomous program We go through it in one year and we're there to support you along your journey But for me it took me a while to raise my price So I'm just you know wanted to answer your question on you know why Maybe having I got to some certain point in is because maybe for the first three years I sat in the space where I almost wasn't making money because it was almost like I was I was bringing in money I so when I talk about how much I made that's revenue. That means I kept all that obviously right So now we're on track to build that vision because now we have like I said Automation and then we have AI so now our tracks are expanding to something that we didn't have Which is the foundations of QA testing Automation AI testing and AI assisted tools and now you're talking about a program that is between 17 25 29 99 that can land you that can help you land a job anywhere from 70 upwards 180k 11 I'm just a general I can keep talking to you But I gotta let you go Not because you never delivered an amazing information give your website out before we leave one more time. Road to QA is a self-paced career development platform designed to help adults pivot into tech through quality assurance (QA) and software testing, combining step-by-step learning, community accountability, and practical experience.

Jennifer Gattas started by learning about QA online after being sick with COVID and having financial struggles. She studied for 90 days and landed her first QA role, going from $40,000 to $80,000 in salary.

A QA engineer tests software, apps, and technology to ensure they work correctly. For example, they test that a fast-food ordering system sends the order to the right person.
