Hugo Wiggersworth delivered an extraordinary performance at the Red Bull King of the Air qualifier, winning the men's title with 19 flawless tricks in just 15 minutes on a 7-meter foil kite—marking one of the most remarkable achievements in the event’s history. His performance, which included complex kite loops and precise execution, stood out against the challenging and ever-changing wind conditions caused by the approaching typhoon. Alyssa Minch claimed the women’s championship, showcasing consistent skill and confidence throughout the competition, and earning her a place in the Red Bull King of the Air Ladies division. The men’s final was particularly intense, with Finn Fogel finishing second and Martin Clubliske placing third after a strategic shift to a trigger kite. Despite strong competition, the event highlighted the growing dominance of foil kites and innovative tricks, with judges giving more credit to variety and execution. Wind fluctuations and unpredictable conditions tested riders’ adaptability, with many struggling to maintain momentum. Local teams and organizers played a crucial role in managing the event’s logistics. The day concluded with widespread celebration among competitors, who shared emotional reactions and reflections on growth, pressure, and resilience. Hugo’s win, combined with the success of other riders, demonstrated a shift toward higher skill and creativity in big-wave kiteboarding. The event also served as a wake-up call for riders to adapt to dynamic conditions and expand their trick repertoires. With the top athletes now confirmed for the next phase, including a potential run to Cape Town, the competition continues to set new benchmarks in the sport.
Alright guys, I'm going to do a live podium with you at the moment. We've just finished.
It's 12 o'clock in the day and we have finished event at what a crazy day. I mean we went
from yesterday people being helped into the water to I think the ladies final. The men's
semis could have been 20 to 25 knots maybe less. I think as that came off the water claiming
that it had done a 6 meter jump. So we had a lot of upsets just to let you know the people
in contention for the podium. It's either a listen mint or sarah sedic on the lady's side
and on the men's side it's either fin flugal or Hugo Wiggersworth, Hugo Wiggersworth landing
19 tricks in the final wind out on a 7 meter foil kite. I think as this typhoon is getting
closer it's sort of brought a lot of cloud and that's taken a lot of the wind away. The
judges changed position today. They went up to a bus to get a bit of view. It's got Chris
Bull with me. Chris, I mean, dude, was that tough day? I don't know. I think Hugo needs
to contact with Guinness Book of Records doesn't he? You see 19 tricks and 15.
19 completed tricks over a 7.5 no crashes, perfect execution like what the hell. It was crazy.
I mean, we saw. That's a record, right? It has to be. It has to be. You know, like if
you work out that small, like, you know, in 15 minutes that's more than one trick every
minute holding your position. That was incredible performance.
The finals were completely different from the semifinals. The semifinals, the guys were
being challenged by the wind and the conditions and then obviously the final. It just picked
up. You go win on the 7 meter foil kite. Again, first time we saw the foil kite and we're
waiting, so I'm going to bring you the live podium. As we wait for that, let me give you
a few stories of the day as I said. It's only midday. They have been rushing it because
the pending typhoon is coming. On the men's side and the semifinals, Martin
Clubliske, changed kites, went to the trigger and just rode super well, Maxwell Dyle couldn't
seem to find anything and Bistley disappointed to be knocked out of that. Finn Fogel for
his Timo great heat. Well, we've got the podiums. I was just saying that Hugo knocked out
the num-1 scene, Zach Adams in the semifinals, but third place is Francesca Mani, second place
Sarasadik. So that means your champion on the women's side winning a ticket to the Red Bull
King of the Air Ladies division is Alyssa Minch. Super happy for Alyssa. The whole week she's
been saying, you know, I say, I think you can do this a listen. She was quietly confident
and just went about a business today. Such an amazing performance. The tears are flying
on the lady's side. I don't know, something's happened. She's gone down. She's broken
the Red Bull sign. That's all on. And now she's dropped a board. I'll just let you listen
to the audio. And they're going to be handing out some hope there. All here come the
chicks. We like chicks. We like chicks. We will obviously catch up and talk to Alyssa
after she gets off the podium. So I can see Finn there. He's got his board. Hugo's got
his board. I can't see Martin Clubisky. He was down on the beach, actually. Martin's
over by the shower. I should probably tell Martin to hurry up. Martin is in the shower
and he's working towards us very slowly, but it was also very, very happy.
Did Chris Ball give us a little spoiler away there? 19 tricks and 15 minutes from Hugo.
We're good with. So super interesting. A very challenging day all around for the riders.
Very challenging on the crew. Sergio Cantigale as usual manages to whip these events together.
And yeah, great. By the way, the local team has been absolutely amazing. Here come the
chicks. Let me tell you the amounts. Third place. 500 euros. That's going to be on the
bar tonight. Thank you. A lot of photos going on. They do everything very
efficiently. Every single thing has to be a photo. In second place, Sarasadik, 1,000
euros. Another photo. The girls are stoked about the money, which is good to see.
And it must be over going this way. This sounds like a F1 to set the formula one
presentation. And Alissa mentioned backing up a win in lots of tram. Having a fantastic
year. Second in the world in the GK. Two big podiums this year. On her way to the Red Bull,
King of the Year, ladies division. Been presented the trophy. Hopefully we'll get someone
to get photos because I can't do it all. Now let's see the chick. The chick is 1,500
euros. Jason van der Spay. That money's half yours. She doesn't want to do a hands
of full. She's got board. She's got trophy. She's got money. She's got the championship
and the title. Chris, it's a great presentation. Now we have it. Now we're getting the media
girl who's ferociously kicked me out of the bus today. The difference between first
and second place was. Are you dropping spoilers? No, not really. But you know, the variety
one at four. There we go. You heard it there first. Sarah's actually tricked scores were
slightly higher. We're still doing failures by the way. She cheered all her tricks from
the way in. So she did well, but she needs third. Yeah. I think she knows that. She already
said I need to work on the side more on her repertoire. And then she, because her loops
are very legit, you know, very legit. Yeah, it's really well. The girls are still on the
podium. They've got Red Bulls. They're shaking Red Bulls. There's no champagne here.
It's only Red Bull, everybody. And let's say men's trophy in the air. Very happy. There's
a big smile on her face. Oh, what a great presentation. They're going to be drunk on Red Bull.
They are. I always like it when they give Sarah to the girl champagne, because she doesn't
drink. Who with a champagne is like me and you with a Rubius cube. Yeah. Now we are waiting
for the guys to come up. I'm sure the guys will be next. I see Martin. He's over a big
smile on his face. Obviously Finn, the Hugo Wuggersworth in the head. He says he's quietly
confident. Close actually. Yeah. Second for the men's as well. Big decision for him to take
that foil card out. He hadn't used it all day, but he was like, I think it's a good
decision. Yeah, you heard it here first. Martin from Germany. Martin from Germany. Martin
from Germany. Martin from Germany, third place. By the way, unbelievable performance to beat
Maxwell Dow, Maxwell Dow. Just couldn't get firing today, but he didn't just take that opportunity.
He took an opportunity with both hands. Holy shit. Finnflugel is second, which means your
champion is going to be from New Zealand going to co-der this year for the first time. Here
you guys Wuggersworth. Well deserved. What a legend. Beautiful road today. So disappointed
to miss our last year. So disappointed not to be in last year. And he's on top of the
podium. He's won a World 2nd World Championship this year in Hydrofall. Now he's won the Red Bull
King of the Air qualifier. He's in brother. He's going straight to Cape Town now. He told
me big, small and space. I mean, what a day. But by the way, let's be fair. He has been
riding well the whole event. He's been, I think he hit the highest score of both days.
Legit. Legit as like super good. Consistent. I was going to say 19 tricks over 7.5 in 15 minutes.
Like flawless. Absolutely flawless. And they took your advice. I gave it to them. Get your
ass up in the river. Seriously, yeah, I'm glad he did that. I noticed. Guys, make it easy on the judges. Sometimes it pays to know people who
are no judges. If you go on the podium now with the trophy, with the money, big smile on
this face. They're obviously not very happy. But listen, there's been a absolutely amazing
competition. I'm just going to get out there and get a little bit more quiet so you can
hear me a little bit more. There will be probably about 10 minutes of photography. But I think
I've seen a Chris, that's how he won. He won by putting the work on the water, putting
that variety 19 tricks. It's an incredible performance, a bit of a disappointing day for the French
riders. The French riders just didn't seem to fight today. A lot of them training back
are theirs. This was just wild conditions. And I guess it's a bit of a wake up call for
those guys as well. You've got to get out of that flat while you've got to challenge
yourself in riding conditions. The cream rides are the top guys. That's what happens. You
know what? I'm just going to have a break here, guys. Enjoy this myself. And then I will
catch up with some of the winners and bring you a little bit more of the action. But we
still have Hugo on the stand there. Trophy, money. You owe me money, Hugo. Now we have some
important guys standing between the two champions. They're out there. Hugo's not even smiling
anymore. He's just, if that is a smile, I have no idea what it is. Just the normal day
produced for nobody. 19 tricks in 15 minutes, man. By the way, keep it short. It was worth
the wiggle. He did it all the time. I think no one's ever done that, actually. 90 tricks
in one. That's a trick. That's a trick. Less than one minute. I thought you said you
were going to college. Do the math. 40 seconds. That's why I'm failing.
but overall it's been an absolutely amazing event here really challenging
conditions really tough conditions almost a bit flat today at times but when
the final happens the man's final in particular man it was a crazy man's final
I'm here with Martin Kabushki Martin mate I know how disappointed you are
with me can also how disappointed you were to miss out on cold away this must
feel pretty good yeah it feels insane I mean I train the whole summer just
cutting a lot and I mean I think you learn a way more from losing and this
time I definitely paid off and yeah super stoked like now Kabton training and
then hopefully Kota there's good things to learn here as well you know I
mean you know I know I see young guys coming all the time they're like man I
want to make final straightaway but it's tough you know and sometimes you need
to run your luck and you need to ride you think this time change kites went to
the went to the trigger from the banger big difference I think yeah for sure
now I was super used to to both kites in summer but then for me it's really
depending on what I ride the last week like I it's it's quite different so both
both the insane kites but for this conditions it was very nice and I think this
kite suits me so well so I'm super happy to perform like this and come first
Red Bull comp so yeah now we're gonna wait a few days see if you make it I think
this is the kind of performance you need to get in front of the judges right?
yeah for sure and I also did the the entry like last day Terefa I got
some good clips so I was I was like quite happy to then just go into the
competition no real pressure because my my entry was too bad so yeah I think the
performance was was hopefully good enough well I mean let's talk about the
semi-final big win over your mate Max I mean that was awesome to see that's
when I really thought oh man you're really turned on because let's be fair I
think going into that you were sort of just getting through your heats you
know just going through it but that was when you really stepped up yeah for sure
now with Max it just felt like a normal training session just a day of
wicker yeah just a day of wicker and the wind dropped so it was quite quite
hard but then if you guys were good so yeah now it was so much fun competing
congratulations bro thank you I'm here with runner-up Fin Flugel super tough day
right I mean you rigged a big kite you had the small kite it was just you
didn't know what to take yeah definitely was hard day but man I enjoyed it so
much it was actually refund like I don't know I had like fun competing against so
yeah I really enjoyed it and yeah I mean the end second was yeah not what I
hope but I mean I'm happy with my performance and now hopefully looking forward to
king of there I mean I know how disappointed you are you're such a
competitor you're gonna get down to Cape Town early and start preparing I'm sure
you're gonna get through on the video is that the plan yeah I'm gonna go I think
around the 5th of November and then yeah get training in and yeah just have fun
and yeah hopefully do the same in Kota looking back at the final I know you had
the you had the fly surf on the beach at any stage you think you're gonna you
gonna go and jump on that kite because it was so marginal even me I didn't know
whether to run down and get Hugo's kite he looked overpowered you were putting up
big scores and I even I did not to do yeah definitely it was intense
final yeah I saw I'm gonna stick with the two criteria to get the dangle pass on
maybe like a kite look KGB so yeah but then the wind picked up and I was pretty good
on my nine actually and yeah I saw they had it with the impression score but
just sort of a different yeah wasn't very close but congrats with it great job
on the Sonic as well as the back so yeah man I hope you're with the comp my good
luck brother see you in Cape Town thank you I hope you guys I'm here with man
at the moment means winner Hugo Wyrgelsworth 19 tricks over 7.5 I think one was
seven but let's say 19 tricks over 7.5 I think it was 12 over 7.5 and I landed
19 out of 19 in 15 minutes mate I might my way sounded a lot better but I
mean I mean what a performance I mean actually to be honest man since you've
been here you've pretty much been scoring the highest tricks the whole the whole
competition yeah yeah honestly I'm probably surprised by that because I came
to this event I mean to less than to even less than two weeks ago at Puckle I
literally launched my kite smashed myself into some rocks like an absolute
kook and then here I come here and win against the best some of the best guys in
the world I mean bruised ass I believe some stitches as well we're in two
pits two sets of bike pants and some padded stuff to support I mean when you
come here you said look I'm a little bit injured but where did this
performance come from I think I think my I don't know I think it's just been
coming for the last two years to be honest I think now that I've really got
the competition experience and not feeling too much pressure I mean last year
at the qualifier and to refer I got to the semi-finals and then just cooked it
due to the pressure I think and then yeah this event I was really locked in
and yeah didn't crash too much so that was the key well didn't crash at all
on the final let's talk about the final big decision the wind had dropped
down I mean the wind was pretty funky today compared yesterday went for the
seven-metre sonic in the final I know it was the right call but at one
stage the wind picked up and I actually text useful and said should I go and
get his nine meter ready just in case you wanted to change but was it the right
decision in the end oh absolutely and I had a good feeling of the wind
conditions because I was in the last semi-finals so which was just like 20
knots had dropped to 20 knots basically so had to really scramble through that
heat and then yeah the sonic was absolutely the right choice and also you
guys wrote the final a different spot right you know we're sort of today we've
been writing down on the beach I know that doesn't give you any reference but we
sort of went back to where we were writing which but back up in the river
mouth was a bit up there I mean I actually had a bit of an advantage because the
boys when the heat started weren't up there and I was already there and then yeah
we could go left and right in some nice flat water which is really good and then
I was the only one who in the last five minutes I was like all right I'm gonna
do something different here and I went into the waves and to the kickers and I
got some really big jumps then I think the judges get a slightly different
angle looking at you and stuff so yeah what was cool is you know when Chris
ball was speaking to him after and you got him earlier it's the first time I
feel like they've really given the four kites a bit of love you know in the
past they've always sort of pulled them back maybe with the GK judging a
little bit but it was great to see them rewarding yeah I mean at the end of the
day big ears all about high travel distance you know and my kite angle is
pretty good I'd say now compared to the tube kites and especially in those
lighter conditions that's you know I think I do have a slight advantage and
that's what you need to win these events yeah beating Fern was a little bit of a
punch in the face because the second time you've been in my row now he must
be getting a bit sick of that but you know obviously he was disappointed it was
very professional after but looking forward to King of the Air now what's the
plan you got stuff to work on are the foil kites part of that plan have you
got more stuff you can bring to the table I mean 19 tricks how many of those were
different they were all different I was doing Contra's left right kite loops
left right I guess the only thing that I was missing versus Finn was the
unhooked move I've an unhooked and over two years so not sure how that's
gonna go learning that stuff but this spot really favoured me because I it was
right foot forward mostly so I was really most of my highest growing chicks
were kite loops to the right so I think I need to go to Cape Town really lock in
those left foot forward kickers yeah I mean you spent lots of time in Cape Town
now Billy disappointed to miss out last year on this event I mean how cool is
us that you don't have to worry about your video now you're in I think this
probably give you a good seat as well yeah hopefully yeah it's so nice having a
guaranteed spot I've been waiting for that for a long time so I mean let's hope
we can continue that tradition you know with the Kiwi's doing well there you
know that that black jersey then from this black jersey that mark war I mean
can you go ahead and win that in Cape Town I mean is that is that possible now
I mean it's definitely gonna be some you know the Cassades and there and it'll be
pretty hard to be them that's to be honest but I don't know I surprise myself
here that's see what I can do over there everyone was so happy make
congratulations dude and mate I can't wait to see you in Cape Town yeah see you
in Cape Town cheers okay guys I'm signing off from here in Taiwan but I want to
