Coffee Brick Italian, season one, lesson 14.
Buongiorno a tutti e benvenuti a Coffee Brick Italian,
io sono Marc.
Ciao a tutti, io sono Francesca.
Buongiorno, it's Katie.
Now, last time on Coffee Brick Italian,
we were trying to form new sentences
by using verbs in the infinitive form
and combining them with other frisies like posso.
I can, non posso, I can't.
And mi piace.
I like or, literally, if you remember, to me polisies.
We're going to be doing a little more of this today
and we're going to be changing the topic.
Last time we were in a restaurant,
but this time, siamo nel albergo,
oh, siamo nel hotel, we are in the hotel.
Allora, Katie, come stai oggi.
Sto benissimo, grazie.
E tu?
Sto bene, un po' mal di schiena oggi.
I've got a bit of a sore back today.
It's all the scaring at end of microphones
and recording equipment for our session.
But no, to worry.
Come stai Francesca.
Ah, io so benissimo, grazie Marc.
Perfecto.
Allora, siamo pronti.
Si, pronti si mi.
Iniziamo.
So, to begin with today,
I'd like to start with a little bit of review
based on what we learned last time.
We were using those different phrases
with some infinitives.
Let's go through them again.
Katie, can you remember how you say "I can"?
Posso.
OK.
And what about "I can't"?
Non posso.
What about "I like" or "to me polisies"?
Mi piacce?
OK, so what we're going to do
is going to give you some expressions
to translate from English into Italian
using those phrases and we're going to combine them
with infinitives.
Sometimes you'll know the word
and sometimes you'll have to make it up,
guessing from your knowledge of Italian
or indeed other languages.
Let's see how we go.
So first of all, number one,
I would like you to say,
"I like to eat pizza."
Let's give our listeners some time to think.
OK, Katie, let's hear "I like to eat pizza."
Mi piacce mangiare la pizza?
Molto bene, Katie.
Mi piace mangiare la pizza
or mi piace mangiare pizza
without article, they're both fine.
OK, well done.
So, let's try another one.
How about "I can speak Italian"?
Katie, can you try that one?
Posso parlare italiano?
OK, Molto bene.
Posso parlare italiano, perfect.
Now, that one makes sense.
Posso meaning "I can".
But Posso is a kind of physical ability
to be able to do something.
When you know how to do something,
you can use another word,
and that is "so" from the verb "sapere",
meaning "I know" or "to know",
"sapere, to know",
"so parlare italiano",
"I know how to speak Italian".
Yes, it's just a mark, that's right.
"So parlare italiano".
So there's a new word that we can add
to our range of expressions.
So parlare italiano.
Katie, I've got another one for you.
How would you say "I can sing"?
So cantare?
Perfecto, so cantare.
Molto bene, so cantare.
And if you, for example, had a sore throat
and you couldn't sing, you weren't able to sing.
In that case, you would be saying "I can't sing".
Not the fact that you don't know how to sing
because we all know you've got a wonderful singing voice
and you love singing.
But how would you say "I can't sing today"?
Non posso cantare oggi.
Perfecto, non posso cantare oggi.
So that's a good example of how we can take "poso",
meaning the ability to do something.
I can sing because I've not got a sore throat.
So cantare, "I know how to sing".
So cantare, "I am able to sing".
I can sing "I know how to sing".
OK, let's try one more.
What about "I like to dance"?
No, we've not done to dance.
But if I tell you that un balo is a ball,
then can you make an "are" verb out of that
and make it into "I like to dance"?
OK.
OK, we'll listen to some time to think about it.
Yes.
Chidi.
Mi piace ballare.
Mi piace ballare.
What's your bouncing consonant?
Ballare.
Mi piace ballare.
Sí, perfecto, che ti sei veravissima.
Mi piace ballare.
Mi piace ballare.
Francesca, ti piace ballare.
Sí, sí, ma non sono molto brava.
Preferisco cantare.
Preferisci cantare?
Sí.
Good to know.
Good to know.
Francesca said "preferisco", "I prefer".
And I turned it around and said, "Do you prefer preferisci?"
So two verbs there, but we've not covered those ones.
But something else to introduce.
Preferisco and it can be followed again by an infinitive.
So, Chidi, if I were to ask you, do you like to sing?
And you wanted to answer, "No, I don't like to sing.
I prefer to dance.
Can you try that?"
Let's give her a listen of some time to think through.
Chidi.
No, non mi piace cantare.
Preferisco ballare.
Perfecto.
OK, so there's a new word for you.
Preferisco.
Now, there's one other word that we do know
because we've covered it when we were talking about drinks, in fact.
And I would let you to think about this
combining it with an infinitive again.
And I'd let you to see, "I would like to help.
I would like to help."
Now, there, we're using two words that we've learned in different scenarios,
but we can combine them together to see, "I would like to help."
Let's think about that.
Chidi, how would you say "I would like to help"?
Would you say "I would like to help"?
Yes, very good.
Would you like to help?
OK, fantastic.
So there we've got more examples of how we can combine words and phrases
that we already know in different contexts
and combine them together to form new sentences.
And that's why Coffee Break Italian is not about simply learning phrases.
It's about understanding how the language works
and putting it together.
OK, it's time to move on to our new topic.
And our new topic is about the albergo,
which is one word for a hotel in Italian.
And there's another word, very difficult word for a jazz guy.
Yes, it's very difficult. It's "hotel".
So both of these words are masculine words.
We say "un hotel", "un albergo".
But just watch with "hotel" in Italian.
You don't have to pronounce the "age", so it's "hotel".
"hotel" is "atto".
So let's think about this.
What would be the first thing you would probably want to say
if you arrived at the albergo?
You might go up to the desk and you might need to say
I have a reservation.
And a reservation in Italian is a pre-booking.
Yes, "una prenotazione".
Let's listen to that again. It's a little complicated.
It's very long.
Prenotazione, prenotazione, molto bene?
No, prenotazione ends in "zione",
and all words in Italian which end in "zione" are feminine.
Yes, it's usually the words which end in a "shon" in English.
Exactly.
And think about that.
Prenotazione, if we kind of Englishified that,
then we would get prenotation.
And that's not too far away from the idea of
someone writing something down in a book,
a pre-noting something.
the fact that you've booked the room. There you go, prenotazione a pre-booking a pre-arranged room,
una prenotazione. So Katie, how would you say I have a reservation?
Oh, una prenotazione? Perfetto. And let's think about this. We already know the word for night because we've learned
good night. Katie, how do you say good night? Buona notte. Buona notte. Now, notte is the
singular form of night. And so far, when we've been talking about nouns forming their plural versions,
we've been looking at things like fratello, becoming fratelli, so that's o-to-i, or sorella,
becoming sorelle e-to-i, for feminine ones, but here we've got a feminine noun, una notte,
which ends in i, the letter i. Like that, in the plural becomes notte. The letter i, just to
complicate things, it's the letter i, that's an e, una notte, and then in the plural form, it becomes
i, as in the letter i, notte, due notte. Due notte. So, you could say I have got a reservation
for two nights, for example. Oh, una prenotazione per due notte. Or, I have a reservation for five nights, kitty. Oh, una prenotazione per cinque notte. Per cinque
notte. Ok. Or, perhaps, a week, and a week is something that we've not yet learned, that would be?
Una settimana. Una settimana. So, I've got a reservation for a week. Oh, una prenotazione per
una settimana. Good. So, per, for, una settimana, a week. Now, the next question is very likely to be,
what is your name? And we know how to say this already. We know how to say it in an informal
form, and we also know the formal form. So, kitty, I wonder if you can remember how you say,
what is your name, formally? Come si chiama. Come si chiama. Come si chiama, would be the informal form,
and the formal version come si chiama. Si, corretto, come si chiama. In a hotel scenario,
you might also hear another version of this question. You might be asked your name.
Il suo nome? Let's hear that slowly. Il suo nome? Il suo nome. So, what for name is nome?
But il suo is the polite version of saying, "You're, your name, please,
il suo nome, per favore?" Si. Il suo nome, per favore. So, to answer either of these questions,
you could say, "My name is," and give your full name, mi chiamo Mark Pendleton,
or in certain circumstances, you might want to say il mio nome. E, my name is il mio nome. E,
and then give your name, or you could just say, "a nome Pendleton," or kitty, what could you say?
So, adding this together to the other information we already know, I have a booking in the name of
Macintosh for three nights. O una prenotazione? Per tre noti? Anome Macintosh.
Si, perfetto. O una prenotazione? Per tre noti? Anome Macintosh.
Ok. Of course, there is the situation where you might not have a reservation.
And in that case, you might want to ask, do you have any free rooms? Now, we've not even spoken
about the word for room. Our room is? Una camera. That's a bit of a strange word because it sounds
like something completely different. Una camera, which is the word for a room, a bedroom,
really. Una camera. Si, una camera. So, how would we ask, do you have any free rooms?
We could say "avete camere libera?" So, let's think about the plural thing that's happening there. Avete camere,
being the plural of "camera" because it ends in an "e" and in the plural form, it becomes an "e"
"avete camere" and "libere." So, again, with that word, that becomes plural as well because
one free room would be "libera, una camera libera." But two free rooms would be "due camere libere."
So, the same thing happens with the adjective "libere," and that's a plural version of the singular
"libera." So, una camera libera, or "camere libere." So, Katie, how would you say,
"do you have free rooms or available rooms?" Avete camere libere? Moltobene. Avete camere libere.
And, of course, the answer might be "see," or "no." In which case, you need to go to another hotel.
So, if the answer is "yes," then you can go on and say, "I would like a room." And
perhaps we should talk about different types of rooms. For example, you might want "una camera dopia."
Katie, can you work out what that would be "una camera dopia"? A double room, perhaps. Exactly. Well,
not quite. It is a room for two people, but it's a twin room where you've got separate beds,
una camera dopia. Una camera dopia. If you wanted a twin room or a room for two people, but with one bed,
a double bed, in that case, you just ask for "una matrimoniale."
Una matrimoniale. Una matrimoniale. So, literally, a matrimonial room, okay? And perhaps you're
looking for a single room in which case you ask for "una singola." So, in each case here,
you can see a single room, una camera singola, or just a single, una singola.
Sim happens with "una camera dopia" or just "una dopia" and likewise with "una camera matrimoniale" or
just "una matrimoniale." Okay, we're going to take a short break there and we'll be back in just a
moment. Here, at Coffee Break Italian, we want to help you turn your down time into "do time."

Los Culturistas with Matt Rodgers and Bowen Yang. That's the reaction. A lot of people are having
when they first try "cupi mayo." It's the one with the red cap and the little baby on the bottle.
You've probably seen it in the grocery store before. And if you've ever just walked past it,
some people would say that's a huge mistake because this mayo is different. Most mayonnaise uses
whole eggs. Cupi only uses egg yolks, which gives it this rich umami flavor. It's smoother, deeper,
and almost buttery. Once people try it, they start putting it on everything. Egg sandwiches,
fries, burgers, some fans even swear by dipping pizza crust in it. And once you notice it,
you start seeing it everywhere. Chefs use it. Restaurants use it. People who really care about
flavor use it. Never try it. Grab the bottle with the red cap next time you're at the store.
Put it on just about anything. Then you'll understand. Cupi, the original Japanese mayonnaise.
You stopped waiting for permission and started building yourself, your dreams, your credit.

spiraling with festival and summer plans. And we all know the worst part of being the one who
fronts the money for the passes or housing. That's why this year we're only using Apple Cash.
And the best part is you can spend the money you get right away,
anywhere Apple Pay is accepted. Terms apply.
Okay, let's get on with the lesson. So let's imagine the situation. Katie, you've arrived
at the hotel and you haven't got a reservation so you want to book a room. You ask, first
of all, do you have any rooms available? And then when Francesca, who's the receptionist
at the hotel tells you that she does have rooms available, then you'd see which type of room
you would like. Okay? Okay. Good morning. Good morning.
You have a free camera, yes, sure. Would you like a double for three nights? Okay, a double
for three nights. Ah, no, me. Ah, no, me, Rene. Bene, Sima. So Katie started there by saying,
"I don't have a reservation." You can say, "Oh, una prenotazione, I have a reservation to see,
I don't have a reservation." Of course, all you need to do is put non before the verb. So I don't
have a reservation. No, no, una prenotazione. Okay, now the next thing that normally happens is when
you're booking into a hotel is that you're asked for a couple of things. Most likely, you're credit
card. So how would we ask, first of all, the word for credit card is la carta di credito. La carta
di credito. La carta di credito. So Katie, you already know how you would see this. Can I have
your credit card? Your is a little tricky in there, but it's similar to il suo nome, but we're talking
about a feminine word. See if you can work that out. So can I have your credit card? I'm thinking,
"You would change to la." Yup. Sua carta di credito. Benissimo. La sua carta di credito.
Posso avere la sua carta di credito? Per favore. Okay, so can I have your credit card? And the other thing that you may be asked for is your
passport, which of course is your passport? Yeah. In that case, it might not be can I have your passport
because they're not going to keep it, but they might want to see it. And the verb to see is
vedere. So Katie, how would the receptionist say can I see your passport, please? And watch
is il passaporto. Posso vedere il suo passaporto? Benissimo. Posso vedere il suo passaporto per
favore. Can I see your credit card? Your passport. Il suo passaporto. Okay, so having seen your credit card,
having seen your passport, then it's likely that you're going to be given your key. And the key
is la chiave. Let's hear that again. La chiave. La chiave. And we've already come across a word
for "he is" when we're presenting our family. We can see here is my brother. Here is my father.
And that word was? Ecco. Ecco. So here is the key. How would we say that? Ecco la chiave. Okay, so in
addition to being able to book into a hotel, Katie, you can now work in a hotel as well.
Get to know. If I get fed up of the Scottish weather? Absolutely. So ecco la chiave here is the key
and indeed you may be wished a pleasant stay. Buona permanenza. Good permanence, literally.
Buona permanenza. Grazie. Right, so we're going to go back to the conversation that Katie
and Francesca had and this time add the extra bits to it. So they're going to be asking for a room,
Katie doesn't have a room and she asks for a room and then we'll finish off with the
receptionist asking for the credit card and the passport and so on.
Vorei una dopia. Va bene. Per quante notti. Per tre notti. Perfetto. E a che nome. Anomi Rennie.
Molto bene. Mi può dare la sua carta di credito per favore. Si ecco la mia carta di credito.
Ok, grazie. Posso anche vedere il suo passaporto per favore? Si, certo. Ecco il mio passaporto. Benissimo.
Allora ecco la chiave. Grazie. La camera set. Buona permanenza. Molto bene. Grazie.
Fantastic. Now I have to say it's been very enjoyable watching Francesca and Katie do this conversation which has not been written down at all. We've not prepared this ahead of time so that was really on the spot they're well done.
Bravi si me. Allora, let's just do a little run through of some of these words and phrases that we've covered in this lesson. So first of all I have a reservation.
O una prenotazione. And you might want to say I have a reservation for three nights. O una prenotazione per tre notti.
And you might want to say I have a reservation for one week in the name of Macintosh.
Una prenotazione per una settimana a nome Macintosh. O una prenotazione per una settimana a nome Macintosh.
Okay. Now we also learned the phrase do you have any rooms available? Avete camere libere.
And we also learned the different types of rooms. So a single room. Una camera singola o una singola.
Una camera singola. A twin room. A room with two beds. Una doppia o una camera doppia. Una camera doppia.
Or a double room. Una matrimoniale o una camera matrimoniale. Una camera matrimoniale.
Two things that the receptionist might say could be can I have your credit card?
Or indeed can I see your passport?
And finally we have the phrase here is the key.
And Kitty can you remember the word for have a nice day?
Now just before we finish I've got a little challenge for you. In some situations you may want to see the room before you accept it.
Depending on what kind of hotel you're going to or maybe they've got different types of rooms.
So using your Italian that you already know, how would you say can I see,
I won't we've learned today for the first time, can I see the room please?
Perfecto. So another example of how using words that you already know, perhaps not that we've learned in in particular context but you can combine them together to see what you want to see.
And that's the secret to language learning.
That is all for today and indeed we hope that you've enjoyed this program and that you found it useful particularly if you're planning a trip to Italy and you'll be checking into our hotel in Italy.
Actually by the time you listen to this I will be on holiday in Rome so I'll be using some of this language and I'm very much looking forward to that.
Now the other thing I wanted to mention is that next time we are going to be looking at useful words that include more numbers
and days of the week and things like that because indeed if you're planning a journey then you need to know what you're going to be doing on each day of the week.
And if you would like to get more out of your Italian experience please visit coffeebraicitalianplus.com.
And if you do decide to upgrade to the full version of this course you will have access
to videos where the words flash up on the screen and full lesson notes which cover the language
and grammar covered in every single lesson. And indeed you'll also be able to access the bonus
audio which includes additional vocabulary, further phrases and some translation challenges.
And in fact that's what we're just about to record now for this lesson. So we better get on with
that. We hope that you've enjoyed this episode of Coffee Break Italian. Ciao!
Ciao alla prossima! Grazie, ciao!
