CARPOOL: Advertising

In this lively and conversational podcast, Benito and Mary reflect on personal growth, health, and identity, sharing how their recovery and daily routines have improved their well-being—particularly hair growth through prenatal gummies and natural body regeneration. They dive into the emotional depth of OCD, explaining how it's often misunderstood and how specialized therapy (via noCD) helped them manage intrusive thoughts without shame. The hosts also celebrate classic advertising campaigns from the past, praising their creativity, artistry, and ability to spark conversation, while contrasting them with today’s often oversaturated, formulaic ads. Humor and self-awareness are central, with playful bits like their “Puppet Master” dynamic, Halloween costumes, and references to pop culture, including Dancing with the Stars and iconic commercials. They also introduce a new podcast, "Untugged Pit Stop," rooted in drag and community. The episode blends personal storytelling with wellness advocacy, promoting products like Neutrophil and Merit Beauty as tools for self-care. Ultimately, the conversation emphasizes authenticity, curiosity, and the joy of lived experience—highlighting how personal growth, emotional honesty, and nostalgic media all contribute to a fulfilling life.

The following podcast is a "Dear Media Production". I'm Benito Skinner. I'm Mary Vephrone. And this is. Rye! What is that? A thunder. The issue with me doing the lightning thunder bit is that now people say that to me, and every time they say it, I have to go listen to that song. But I'm here with such good news. I met him. Mr. Imagine Dragons himself. The man felt like fucking granite. And you know what he said to me, because handsome. And I said, handsome. Was he aware? He is darling. He had no idea like the lore. Yeah. Well, maybe. I mean, maybe someone said really cool. I bet someone on a tour bus said, "Look at this gay guy." And he was like, "I'm writing right now." They were all howling. They're like, "He's such a fucking loser." Oh, they use a type language. Exactly. You're really getting into character acting again. In a way that I'm really enjoying. I think I just want to be. Yeah, I think because we've been so in the edit, I'm not releasing a lot of that energy out. So I'm kind of doing a lot of bits for you, for the people around me. It's fun. It's fun to know I still have that muscle of like doing an impression. Yeah. That's something that I've had recently. This is very conversational. See, Chrissa? Your favorite little f***ing. It's not so scary. Good. I love watching you eat chips. Chrisss. I've been getting some questions lately. Like what? Saying how thick my hair looks and it's been growing. It's grown a lot. You're taking prenatal gummies. I'm taking prenatal gummies. Lensstone prenatals. Oh, it's for the baby. It's because I start eating food. Mm. Yeah. It turns out when your body is not in a caloric deficit every day, it can do the sort of like main functions that it's supposed to. Like regenerating cells and things like that. Yeah. And so my hair has grown so much in the last like seven or eight months because I turned a corner with recovery. And now I have beautiful hair. So I just wanted to share that and the prenatal gummies. Huggler. It's time for a hug. Whenever you're in a struggle. Sit back down. There's a straddle time. Oh god. This is from the back. Of course. Ow, my hair. Oh yeah, let's rip it out. Now we're doing the ghost. We're throwing pots today. To me, this is how we should. We should do the pot like this. We recorded like this. We'll make editing so easy because we have one track. Like this. When you're going to take me for a ride on your motorcycle burger. Don't mock the clothes. You were going way too fast. And the hat is fabulous. He, um, he's my least favorite type of striker. Burger is everyone. Burger is the every man. Unfortunately, I know. I know. We don't talk enough about how heinous he is as a person. You know, what they do so expertly in that is like a man being threatened by a successful woman. It is done. In, uh, was such a just precision. And she is above that season too. I know. Well, of course she goes. Well, no, I'm thinking about when the next season with him where he kind of returns. That's what I. Didn't you have a bob? Did she have a bob in my head when she's wearing that product outfit? She has long hair. She has a ponytail. That's such a good point. So that's something that a gay guy all kind of just have. But I think when he leaves the poster, I think she has a bob. But we'll check the, we'll check the tapes. Oh, she might. We'll check the tapes. She can only like this with the helmet off. I know what you mean. I'm not in mood to see it played night. To go to the play in Brooklyn. Maybe right on your fucking lame ass motorcycle in a new product dress with a fringe bag. And you're not even going to come to the play. She bought him a product shirt too. It's like be so grateful. It's so me. Oh my god, I almost went up and beyond for a straight guy like a couple months ago and I just decided not to. But I decided not to, which was good. Yeah, you don't have to do that. I knew where he was going to be for something important. And I almost like sent him flowers. And then I was like, no. Why would you ever do that? I would do that. You get flowers. But I don't. Well, of course. Oh, got it for myself. You get edible arrangements. So flowers. I can piss my own piss. I didn't know the word. So I just kind of had to go. I can make my own plans or something. Yeah. And that was like a whole land hit. She like, she your feminist one. Yeah, Bruno Mars bit, right? You just ate water, by the way. Yeah. I don't have it. He's still one or two days. Oh, sorry. There's a mind. My girl Chris says she's making a stew. Oh, she's making raw meat. She's making bulldog. It's far. It's far. It's simply far. A beverage revolution. There's going to be, uh, simply. Deuce generation. We are. Deuce generation. There's going to be. There's going to be a menu item that's, uh, it's the Fudge use. And it's called Simply Fub. But there's no noodles. There's some noodles. But it's Simply Fub. It's the. And this is, this is a beverage, beverage revolution. Oh, my God. This is so funny bringing this up. I just met with someone who does, um, who, uh, specializes in Chinese medicine. And she goes in the morning, maybe you have like a little bone broth on your way to a workout. And I was like, holy fucking shit. If you think I'm doing that literally, me taking a squat and like a chicken broth coming out of my life horse. It's the type. It's cartoonish. It's like animated. I'm sorry. Sorry. It comes out and you can see it. She's like, it'll warm up your insides. I was like, totally. I believe that all of this is good for me. I just don't think I can do it. Like, wait, I'm looking at your shirt. And I can't tell if it's an optical illusion. But move your, oh, it's shadow. I thought you had a huge stain from some fun. Your shirt. No, but I did have a hobo oil blow up and one of my patty going your bags. We have to actually, we have to send it to Rutgers Island. This bag will get oil on anything it looks at. No, it's send it to, um, send it to the trash bag or whatever. It's, I don't know, it's in the ocean somewhere. It's just a big block of trash. Oh, full of iPhone cases and iPhones. Yeah, and iPhones. I just think the, I almost had the soldiers at Rikers. I think the prisoners at Rikers have been through enough. Oh, they don't want my bag with oil. And by the way, drink, take it anyone. Hey, thanks for doing stand-up tonight. You get two drinks. I always love that. I give these to straight guys that come with their girlfriends because I'm like, that's cool that you did that. That's really sweet. I have some in there for next time. You, you want them to save money, though? For me? No, I want them to get wasted and buy their girlfriend stuff on the internet. Come on. You're such a femininity. Sorry. Don't believe that. I forgot about that term. Do you remember that term? Yeah. Sorry, that was crazy. I am. I remember there was a German exchange. No, no, sorry. No affiliation with actual Nazis. Feminities. Yeah, of course. But I remember a German exchange student. She came to Boise, Idaho. Like, she was huge mistake. In high school, huge, like, massive. And like, she was not prepared for how much, like, people didn't forget it. And we're talking about it. This poor girl. One thing I will say, I don't know why that made me think of it. But at some point I want to ride for the lead actress and worst person in the world. We're not over to, you know, even in Spain. Well, AI, that's make it sound good. Yeah. Are you coming over here, sweetie? She wanted to say, hey, she wanted to get in on the hug. Chrisah silent Clems over to choke me. She was right. I do nothing, by the way. She, I still, he had it coming. I don't even notice until she's here and I go, "Karissa." When she sent out, it comes out of that curtain. Chris, baby. My love. We're having fun, right? Chrisah. Chrisah, hey. Chrisah explains it all. She gets a spin-off podcast called "Karissa." Literally. Chris, it plays right after this. It's like drag race. Exactly. It's like, we love you. What's it called? It was the, it's untugged. But then it's the pit stop. Untugged pit stop. Well, it's pit stop. When does pit stop play? Pit stop is the podcast, isn't it? Okay, sorry. Oh, I forgot to say this on the last episode. Yeah, of course. Leila was like, I think you should do dancing with the stars only because I can picture you smiling and out of breath, like standing next to someone. And I said, well, it would have to be Benny. Yeah. I think we should go on, but we're the, we're the couple. Do you understand that I could easily teach you the tango? Dancing the tango. Like this. Like, like, I have like all of our teams to, yeah, one of my favorite things to do as a kid is I do one dance move and then do like, Brittany at the end of a performance. It used to be, it was my favorite bit. I go. Oh, after save last dance came out, I just like was for one day. I was like, well, I'll just be a ballerina. You're crumping. Yeah. Yeah, Julia's style is on Dancing with the Stars is like, that's joy to me. That's not happening. Yeah, it is. She's on Dancing with the Stars and her TikTok style. Julia's style is on Dancing with the Stars. Yeah, I'm going to start voting. Fabula and Julia's styles, you have my, you have my vote. Like, let's do this thing. You have to watch though. My, I think it was my aunt or someone called my parents. So like, Benny has to do it. And my thing was I was just like, I, I think, I can't, I'm just too competitive for something like that. It was, I just want to go on it and we are the pair and we get kicked off immediately because we're not good. Well, two weeks in and who are you talking about? You think I'm going to let you go out there and not get 10. Well, I'm going to break my foot quickly. You're going to be 10. I'm just throwing you around. No, you're - Oh, I watched one, I know this is all super recent. I watched one, I know only. My favorite plot point is that calum-turner is a pizza chef. - No way. - No way. - She's needing dough. - Yeah, he's needing dough. - That's cool. - Yeah. - Well, what's this called when you kind of like fist it? - When you beat the pussy up. - Yeah, what's this called? When I beat that pussy up? - That's J-Lo and enough. - Well, this is one of our dance moves. - I loved it enough as a kid. Keep going. - Just that is one of our dance moves. - We do Danny Zooko. - You know what they say to me? They go, they say, "Ten for you," but they docker some points because I'm not smiling. - They said, "She has literally not a single happy bone in her body." And she stiffens a board and we go, "That's the point." And the camera comes to us and we're corp-spride, we're the couple from corp-spride. And we're like, "What do you mean?" I thought we killed it. - Danny Zooko. - Everything will leak as Tim Burton, character Sally and Jack's going, "Din." - Fully. I'm Sally, by the way. Remember when I sent you Chad Michael Marine, Hillary Duff at the Cinderella story premiere and they go, "Us? I'm Hillary." - And I said, "Obviously." "Oh, Mack was really surprised you're letting me be a girl for Halloween this year." - Just this once. But you know on Halloween day, what I'm making you be? - You don't even know this. You've had this big thing where you're like, "I'm not going out." - I can. I have- - It's not the woman who made me come back to New York. You made me do all this stuff. You're the woman who makes all my decisions. - This is me looking at Benny. - Puppet Master. - Move, puppet, dance, monkey. - Puppet Master. - Puppet Master. - This is me. - Puppet Master. - Puppet Master. - Oh, this is our friendship. - No, Puppet Master. - Benny is the puppet and I'm the puppet Master. - This is me like, Puppet Master. - Puppet Master. - Puppet Master. - Oh, I want to go out as the- - Benny Jester, you told me. - Benny Jester. - Jesus, I didn't know you were from there. - I'm fluent. - Whoa, easy. And I want you to be Timothy. Timothy. - Okay. - I'll show you in a little shake and go wig. Yeah. - I don't want a shake and go. I want least front. - Okay. - Real hair, real human hair. Never been dyed before. - You got it. - Mine like husband dyed now. You know, Chiffel, it's the fall update. Fall feels like the perfect time for a reset. New routines, better habits. And we all can't wait to launch our own websites or a demand. One more. - With Tinder group, hangouts. - Oh, come on. Don't choke on your words. It's Tinder. - It's Tinder. The group chat can actually go somewhere. 'Cause you know how the group chat goes? Someone throws out what's the move tonight. And it turns into 40 messages, three pulls, a bunch of reactions. Maybe even, what's that, a doodle? - Oh, a doodle. - And then zero decisions. - So with group hanging outs, you and your friends pick an activity. It can be drinks, mini golf, karaoke, motherfucker, whatever sounds like the fun move for you and your friends. Then you can find another group who are looking for the same vibe. No blind date, no forced pairing. Just your people doing something you were already gonna do. Except now there's a possibility for new connections. And maybe romance. - I'm learning about this feature for the first time as well. - I know, I've known about it for a while. - You've been using it quite frequently. - Of course. - With a group chat, there's no pressure on anyone person to carry the conversation. You're just planning a night out that happens to include some new faces. Tinder makes that easy to do. Here's what I love about this. Tinder said in the words of Catherine Hudson, I'm not just one thing. - Exactly. - Tinder has always been where connections, wait, you missed part of it. Hey, hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on. - Maybe you all become friends. Maybe two people hit it off. Maybe three people hit it off. Either way, I wanna tell people to do that more during sex and dates going, oh, I'm not sure I could do that. - Good. - If I wanted to. - Either way, you had a good night with your friends, which was never in question. - Tinder has always been where connections start. Now it's where you bring your friends along for the ride. - Okay. - Come on! - Try Tinder group hanging out to bring your friends, pick a plan, meet new people. Down the Tinder today. - Of course. - I mean, hey, what could go wrong? - I mean, it's not the craziest idea. - We have to go to the next soon and reclaim the space. A lot of LA people were coming in for the championship. I said, what are y'all doing here? Shouldn't you be at the Lakers? Oh wait, and they're not playing anymore. - Yeah, it is interesting. That was definitely a thing. I think it's beautiful. - I don't like it. - I don't like it. - To celebrate New York City is beautiful. - Do you live here? - Do you pay taxes here? - Right about it in your magazine. - Fruit, fruit, the mag. - Fruit. - I feel like. - Yes, honey. - I don't want you to leave. One. - Sweet. - Hey, my apartment's not done. I've been renovating. It's actually been so fun. I like-- - No, it hasn't. - I love my hotel stays. I'm loving this era. I'm having the time of my life. - I'm just sitting back. I made the renovations take longer. - Huh, I still have to. - No, if you're puppeteering right now, girl, chill. I say easy from in sync. - Wait, what's that video where they do that? Is that bye bye bye? - They're on the dolls, the puppet dolls. - I was thinking of the tweet that's like, whoever has my voodoo doll. - Starbit. - No, fuck it. - Hmm, I've seen both. I've seen both of those. So for me, I've been really into the interior space. It's like something I hadn't really delved into. Because it's funny. They really tell you from the second you're born. You're either a close guy or an interior design guy. You can't be both. And everyone told me that. My mom, my teachers, my principal. - I mean, is this bit that's just like friend that won't affirm you? I have never heard that. - That is like, actually, immediately, like so much Scorpio hat rises up in my body when people do that. It's like. - And they go, okay. - Oh, I don't feel that way. - No, not that. - I don't think I ever heard that. - So not that. - No, I don't, I don't agree. - So anyway, what's up? - I got to, during Fashion Week at one point, I was at an event. And I realized that I had gone to the point where I asked, what offices this person's fiancé went at? No, no, no, this was like a banker, I think. But I was like, so we've actually gotten to this point in the conversation where like legally and clinically, you have to say anything. - I don't even need a question. Just kind of like say something and then I'll kind of dive back in. But I am like, I kind of am having the same way. I'm like, how'd you get this far? - Well, I was giving them the benefit of the doubt, thinking that maybe their fiancé worked somewhere that would-- - That birth made its way over here. - Whatever. - Thank you, Chris. - I thought maybe the fiancé would have worked somewhere that was relevant to you, for example, Spotify. But because you asking what office they work in the banking world like that couldn't mean less to you. Well, and I I try to lately I'm doing this like I think I've always even when I was a kid I I do try to ask questions that like I'm genuine genuinely curious about and I am curious with people and I'm Because I'm like I don't want to be disengaged during this conversation or I will dissociate and start like Ruminating and worrying about things. So I am kind of like trying to get there But if I just really don't know someone I can't ask like where were you when you lost your virginity And like what you're biggest fight with your person. It's your biggest fight with your person with something in your closet You want to wear but can't like I love asking questions like that and that tables lately But ma I was at a dinner recently. I go where were you guys on 9/11? Tell me the story. It was amazing Well, I dated a guy who said I wasn't curious enough He said he wasn't sure I was curious enough this because I didn't look out the window when we were in Ubers When we be you're getting dizzy. Have you ever been nauseous in the past? Have you ever learned stuff from your phone? Hello. Yeah, come on. You turned in and go curiosity killed the cat And then he starts checking on his drink and I go like this today's about somebody killing us something master spooky You're marrying it. Spooky season. You're just my little marionette. You know, here's the thing I'm very happy for Scorpio season to be upon us because Merry best not drunk by the way not on drugs. She's just kind of vibing out You give me a song vending her chip at the beginning of an episode and there's no telling where We're on the magic carpet. So oh god I just thought about us on dancing with the stars again magic carpet Aladdin and you're Aladdin and I'm Jasmine I'm Roger. I'm Roger. I'm Roger. Full prosthetic. I'm the dad. I do it. Oh canceled not kicked off the show I always think of Tim Robinson and I think we should we did too much. We did too much I don't know how to move the body. I can't raise That one. That one. Yeah. Yeah, this shut off for me. Yeah, it dresses as the Starbucks mermaid. I'm getting fucking roasted Oh, yeah, but yeah, I'm happy at Scorpio season. It's like I think there's a lot to take from it You know, I'm here to kind of challenge the norms about Scorpios I think people think there's like these big things ever avenge and like you're really aggressive and I think instead There's a sensitivity. Of course, there's a stinger Truth creep your truth creep just oh my god truth creep from it ends with you ends with all of us it ends with us Of course, do we talk about when we watch that? Oh, yeah, yeah, I'm not a huge atlas I can't stop thinking about Blake Lively walking to that party with the curliest hair in the world full vibe smoke you Mesh mesh knee high boot. So let a boot She says yeah, I've been through stuff. There's some daddy stuff in there totally. Oh my god It's a movie that daddy definitely wants to talk about and she read the book first, but she actually likes the movie more 100% that and who and she's so it hoot she's listened to Justin Valdoni's podcast, but she doesn't anymore not as much anymore She's just busy. There's no like there's no bad blood or anything right because she said she's Switzerland in that whole thing Of course, no, she goes me. Don't make me choose. Come on. Please or Switzerland on that one But I guess they did it to them. Well, they should have taken a side. Yes. Well, of course That could until that to your German exchange student goes without saying. Yeah Should we get into what you ride for wait is there something else you're gonna do in the intro? I feel like we covered a lot of ground you want to talk about talk about I renounce my wish anymore I couldn't genuinely I couldn't remember if we've already talked about this is why I wasn't sure what we talked about there was a renounce Okay, sorry. I will so how far have you gotten with this burp thing in your life? Like I am actually curious This is something now I'm curious medically. When did you start burping like this childhood since birth? So it doesn't sound like anyone have you ever heard anyone's burps like sound like this? What is it? Well, I just think there's a demon in my chest Rumea she would do this thing. No, I think there's something in here and sometimes it needs to speak But I love being with someone new when they haven't encountered it because me. I can keep going It's like when I do a bit for you You can really just like use plow on through but you're it's so I think it's just it's kind of unbelievable It's definitely that creates this kind of comedy and this kind of Iconography. I mean you're such a freaking slayed debug. Well, there's a lot of chemical processes Digging on happening in here. Yeah, and so some of them I'm like I don't know. Do I need to see a doctor if anyone listening knows what this could be I have my mom's nurse. My dad was a doctor. I just feel like if there was something diagnosable We would know by now But the problem is I can't go to the doctor and burp for them like that because it doesn't happen like What just because I want it to you. Yeah, he goes you going into a doctor's office and he goes Burp for me burp for me and bend over. I love burping you. Yeah Can I see your pussy That's what the doctor says. I'm like what is that? I'm sorry So even sing that out loud was crazy. Oh, you love it. Oh, yeah, baby. I love that So I renounced my wish was Connected over we watched Wonder Woman separately. This was Wonder Woman, so one 1984. It's called Wonder Woman, so back at it again The The depths of Gal Gadot of what we know now about Gal Gadot Hurons no wait. What was her line? I didn't know yourself We didn't know the level of the depths of her floppage that we know And so we did I watched on a plane obviously and I remember you had seen it and I just went like we hadn't seen it together And we just said remember the climax one is just everyone saying out loud. I renounce my wish Yeah, which you know Just to be clear like there's definitely a few people like if I'm looking if I'm trying to find plot holes in Wonder Woman 1984 Which of course I'm trying to do which we are I'm looking kind of like I feel like some people probably really liked what they got and weren't that sad about Monkeys paw, which I think is like a real thing now. It's not unless maybe it is is that taken from something else But like where you get a gift, but then it's paw behind it is has like it comes out of cost. No, it comes out of cost What if it had a better gift? Well, that's me. That's when I go check this out and then I go I got both Then you two presidents. I said to you not only do you get a gay friend. I have a script for you. Whoa Isn't that cool better gift better gifts alert and I go on one more thing Well, I would just for fun. Oh, so it comes at a cost. Yeah, yes, it comes at a cost. That's why everyone it's like it's the skills of justice That's called without a mustache. I know. I know. It was really early on in what we knew about what we know Oh my god, I love and so Wait fucking clip that holy shit So anyway this movie it's a it's a it's a superhero movie and the ending is people saying out loud and it's just a super cut I right now it's my wish and then everything is Is like me in the middle of shooting over compensating season two I renounce my way, but it doesn't go away What's done is done is mine is mine I am kidding. It was it was all a joy um. I think it's really that film to me is Kristen wig with like kind of a Almost like an undercut 2016 semi undercut with a smoky eye on how cool I love that woman more than like anyone She's she's right above you very it's not much, but just a sliver above you. She has done more work over more years So exactly. Hey, they're starting to catch up. Fuck it. - Who cares, condoms off, boys. - Play with form, raw dog in the table today. - Cares, oop. That's very you in the last episode. - My ass impact. - That's right, carry on. Gag, um, so we both have mental illnesses. - Different ones. - Different ones, but my personal one, and don't take this from me miss bisexual is OCD. And so today we're talking about no CD, which has been a partner of this podcast for a very long time, and has helped me, I used it. I think in total for like 14 months, and it was fantastic, and I use a lot of the things I learned there, and it truly did like fully change my life. So today, we're gonna talk about it. It's an ad on camera. You don't always see these from us. - Do you know that, I don't know if you know this, 'cause it's me. - Yes. - But one of the hardest things about OCD is how misunderstood it is. - Yeah, so I have my phone out for the talking voice 'cause I don't wanna miss anything. It's misunderstood because these things you're thinking when you have OCD are ego-distonic, meaning that you don't actually wanna do them. That's why they cause you so much strife. That's why you feel so sick when it happens. Like I don't actually wanna stab the people I love. Like nothing sounds worse to me. - Maybe sometimes you do. - Nope, never. Nice try, sister. The cameras are off. - Yeah, I was a temp. - And pass. - You know, when he gets interviewed and gone girl and does like a really good job, that's what just happens. - No CD works 'cause you know that it's not real. - Exactly. Real OCD is persistent, unwanted, intrusive, and distressing thoughts that often get stuck in your mind. They tend to latch onto the things you care about most. So it's like if I had this thought, like stab Mary Beth right now, it's like I couldn't imagine anything I'd wanna do less. You know what I also get a lot? Is when I'm on the stairs with somebody, push. Push them down the stairs. I don't wanna do that. That sounds awful. I don't wanna hurt my friends and family. There's a few people I would push down the stairs, but that's not when I'd be getting those thoughts. - It's not your inner circle. - No, that would just be a thought that goes right through me. - Outer circle. - So a lot of people with OCD actually suffer in silence because these thoughts can be really triggering and disturbing, and also you kinda feel like, oh my God, am I crazy? Like am I insane? I can't tell my partner that I just thought about stabbing them. And it's also why like kind of usual talk therapy doesn't work when it's not specialized for OCD, because a lot of times it'll just confirm the rumination loop when you're with the therapist who doesn't specialize in OCD. And you know, when you're with a licensed OCD therapist, like you would be with no CD, and you'd be paired with one and you see what fits. And you can also like message them consistently. It's amazing. They know that they don't need to like alert the authorities if you have like harmful thoughts of like self-harm, abuse any of those things or wear that it's within the OCD program. - Yes. So. - You don't have to suffer in silence. I just wanted to say that. - Hey, thank you, and you don't either. - I do, 'cause my thing is different. - Exactly. - But yeah, continue. - You actually do. - There are no therapists for what I have. - No, we'll keep looking, no. Good luck, right? No CD, no CD if they've got anything for you. Probably not. So here's the thing. The therapy is called ERP, that's what I did. It's exposure and response prevention. It's the most proven treatment for OCD. So for me, this meant sitting with the thoughts, living with them, exposing myself to just having them, not being afraid when like knives would get on the table 'cause I used to have like a stabbing fear. - Yeah. - So I just let them be there. You feel it. You let it pass. Like what I said, feel your feelings. Just know that you're not alone in these thoughts. Also, if you wanna drive off the road or having those things, but you don't actually want to, but if you're having those intrusive thoughts. But also, it can come in many forms, and I feel like go to nocd.com. Research this, talk to a doctor. - Can I say a few things? - I would really love you to. - First, I just wanted to mention that no CD is the world's leadest. So they're the world's leadest. - Nocd is the world's leadest. - Hi, and the world's leadest. - Leading provider of OCD treatment. And all of their licensed therapists specialize in ERB therapy, so that's one, I have three things. Two, OCD is often improperly treated, but no CD therapists go through extensive training led by leadest leading experts in OCD, so they know exactly what to look for and how to help. Third thing, final, before we get to the call to action. Therapy with no CD is 100% virtual and covered by insurance for over 138 million Americans. It also includes support between sessions, so you're never facing OCD alone. I don't know how many people live in this country. I don't even know how many people live in this city. - It has to be 130. - It has to be around 138 million. - I'd say so. - So to learn more about starting OCD therapy with nocd, visit nocd.com and book a free 15 minute call with their team, that's nocd.com. - A lot won't win with nocd. Nocd, thank you. Thank you for the work you do with me. And also thank you for supporting on the pod. I love getting your messages about those of you who have started using it and are finding that it's really helpful. Keep sending those to me. I love reading them. I love you. I love nocd. Come on. Should we get into what we ride for? - Yeah, I think we should. We're riding it's a carpool for advertising. But I wanted to say it's traditional advertising. It's not like targeted ads on like meta. - Nothing could be worse than those. - Nothing like unboxings and things like that. I want to talk about the ads that we grew up on and ones that like are still in our bones today. - Speaking of the ads of that come up on the algorithm. Oh my god, I- - Venus enlargement. - How did you know who told you? Okay, penis enlargement's crazy to me 'cause it's like, I guess you'd be getting filler in the shaft. What's the head looking like? - Can someone tell us what the head's going to be like? - I'm picturing it and it's I'm just a little. That's not, how do we blend that, I would say. I'm a little scared for that. Also, I just, anything injecting into your body, I think we should probably be like a little weary of. I saw a video where someone was talking about a doctor was talking about giving a woman a facelift and they were squeezing out filler that they thought had already dissolved. Like it was coming out of them. - Ew. - I like was gagging for it. It was a total gag. - Mom, mom, mom. - I said, "Mom, I keep going, COVID." (laughing) But I- - What are you, what are you getting? - So, Sophie Pavett, our friend, esthetician, legend, she, I was getting such bad allergies and she's like, I got you, I got the people for this. So there's this company called Wizard Wellness, which is like allergy and they sent me a box. It was, it's unbelievable. They have an amazing no spray. I think it's at CBS in Target, but they have like, it's non, there's no drugs in it. But it's like all- - It's naturopathy. - It's naturopathy and they have, (laughing) but they have a system where it's not only like clearing out your nostrils, but it's like helping the like microbiome of your nose. So it's like, it's not getting dry at the- - It's the flora on my love. - But it's really, it's my flora, it's my gut flora. - But it's been really helpful because those drugs are, if you take them every day, some bad things can happen. - Okay, but it's just a little temporary. - Yes, but obviously I like look them up because I, once you told me, and so they came up a bit and I would say they're advertising, they're not being crazy. The amount of allergy things I'm getting are it's, it is astronomer. - It's an onslaught. - I like Googled Salem, Massachusetts and all I get are hotels and I'm like, I know you're booked, I checked. - We checked. - And leave me the fuck, who goes to Salem in November? - It's off season. - Who goes to Salem in November, bro? - With your colors bent in. - Oh, sorry, that was a style of success. - I missed the days when you could turn on the tube. It was my CTV, you couldn't watch it again later if you wanted to, if you missed it, you missed it. What's funny? - You said that and I just think us, looking at the pedal on dancing with the stars and gling. Which one of us would be a stigmatism? (laughs) - CTV, because we'd be doing a lot of dance on TV. - We'd be making money while we're on TV, by the way. - We'd be wearing brand names. - Well, it would be like the F1 suits. - You obviously have the astigmatism. - Oh yeah, we'd wear like F1 suits, totally. - Yeah, well, they'd have branding all over them. - Who's the tire guy, Michelin? - Yeah, good year. - Good year, is he that kind of like almost goes bust or looking guy? I'd love to work with them. - Totally, yeah, we totally should advertise tires when we're on dancing with the stars. - Well, to me, it's like we have a podcast called Ride. - I can think of a lot of evidence. - Oh, there's a lot of alignment and integrations. I missed the days when you could turn on the TV and you were watching ads that were extremely thoughtful. Maybe they had a voice over from an A-list celebrity who you recognize. It's advertising a product. Maybe you already know and love. Maybe you've never heard of before. Maybe there's jingle. - Yeah, well, they're bringing a world into it. I think it's beautiful in the art of it. This is just gonna be one of those things that's like you're just gonna have to believe that me and this girl were good. We'd love you. We're neutral good. But that we're not saying like any advertising that's like making people do terrible things or all diet stuff, go to hell. - Diet weight loss. - Go to hell. - Diet gambling, yeah, propaganda stuff. No, that's gonna be a chop for us. - I mean, like the Foxwoods commercial. - You'll play whips, the fuck. Oh my God. Wait, what did they say? They're like whips so good. You know, there's like the back and forth when they're like, this yo' play is stanky good. Like what's that thing? Do you know what I'm talking about? - I don't remember. - Do you know what I mean? And I used to love, there was like an orange cream sickle whips. I can taste down my tongue right now. Oh my God, there was a commercial for toothpaste where it was a teacher with like your kindergarten class and she was like, what color is the grass? And they were like green and they're like, what color is the sky? And they're like blue. And she's like, what color are my teeth? And they were like, off white cream. And it's like you need better toothpaste bitch. That's an amazing ad. It's such a good ad. Almost as good as Emerald for Crest toothpaste. Oh my damn. Damn. I made my mom get me the orange flavor one. Clearly there's an orange theme here. I'd love the taste. But I fucking loved Emerald. I had this thing where I was with him and the price is right. So are there any commercials? We should talk about Pepsi. We should talk about star-eyed surprise. I came I came with a few ready to go. I want to talk about it. I want to hear them. There's a few ads that stand out to me. Okay. Verbits what you do is unbelievable. This is your brain on drugs. And this is your family. Rachel cook. Whoa. I don't even remember that. She's smashing an egg. I was pan. I was pretty young at that time. I don't even know if I was born yet when that came out. So for me, Brittany for Pepsi is as good as anything could ever be Brittany. Kind of advertising anything is huge for me. But her dancing and also doing the like through the ages Pepsi thing like where she's in the 50s and like 60s. That's just like that. I get chills. She also did got milk. And I think got milk got milk was I have I had a lot of love for it. Got of course. That's like amazing. You get that like Nickelodeon magazine. It was so cool. I love got milk. Me a ham for got milk. Like how cool is that. But the thing that kind of sticks with me. Maybe the most is Charlize Theron saying diamonds are dead. Jadour Dior. She doesn't want to wear anything except Dior except Jadour Dior. That is hard for me to I say it all the time. I think about diamonds are dead where she rips it off. They're fucking dead. They're dead. That I think is a fabulous ad. Well, it's like those are so those are maybe some of my like top top tier. I think flow from progressive is like well, that's an actor. Jake from state farm. Yeah, but I love the the Verizon guy and he's kind of like he's kind of a bitch. He's a bit of a slut. Well, then he left Verizon to go to mobile. Yeah. And if you're on team mobile, they can't hear you now. Well, they can't hear you now. Period. Every time I call every time I call jobs when I'm talking to my dad, I go yeah, that's your little private joy that you have. There used to be cinematic universes. There used to be recurring characters. I mean, it's so easy a caveman could do it. Those got a little annoying to me. Oh, I love that guy go the gecko. The gecko is really cute. Oh, he's so cute. He has like, he reminds me of a lot of people. He just say he reminds me of a lot of people. He reminds me of a lot of people. Yeah. Let's use that clip. Yeah. But I love him. He's so sweet. I want to have him in my little pocket. Oh, aflack. Even if you think the here's that's a great example. Even if you think the advertising is diabolical or it's an earworm, it's still effective. And I just think like they, they're used to be more thoughtful like premises behind these ads. And so there was a casino. I think I've talked about it for sure on this podcast before, but Foxwoods Casino, which I don't gamble, but they had an amazing jingle. It was a whole song and it was a guy on piano. Take a chance. Make it happen. Pop the cork. Binger snap in. Spin the wheel. Round and round. We go. I think I've seen this guy before. Life is good. Life is sweet. Grab yourself a front receipt. They also have a Native American museum. Oh, let's meet and have a ball. Yeah, let's live for the wonder of it all. Me at Foxwoods. Here it at Foxwoods. That's awesome. Like that's like cool. They made a whole song just for commercial and it's fucking catchy. There was a, there was an auto dealership and voicing. Yeah. There was one that was really, really fun where she was like, this guy, I think his daughter was a cheerleader. So she was in these ads that would run locally. And I just remember like just being a bitch with her. She was so legendary to me because she'd be like, it was like, oh, wait, it was like, save money. And she had her like little pom-poms. It was so beautiful. It's a performer. Of course, what she's, Bob's discount furniture. You just have that. We had more furniture for less. Remember also sometimes local commercials would go viral once we entered the digital age. And it was Montgomery. Do you see that for Montgomery flea market? Okay, it's really good. I'll play a few later. Hey, I can't wait to show you. God, it's so hard to like now be struck with these. I guess I also want to talk about some campaigns that have really stuck with me as far as just visual ones, less commercials. That was the 80s. But I learned about it from I love the 80s. Go on. I mean, Mark Wahlberg and Kate Moss for Calvin. Then I also want to talk about the gossip girl ads where they were like doing, we use them for ride. The mind blowingly and appropriate and all the like bad reviews. That's just like unbelievable. That's advertising. That's like being creative. That's finding something different. I think what's fun is that it is supposed to cause conversation and water cooler talk. But also this is when like trailers for things I think just had more artistry. They were too enticed you to see the movie not to show you the whole thing. I agree. And TV show. There was star power. There's just something about it. It was just like a big block letters. You know what I mean? Of course. Like like sound design. So I want to say about that. Thank you, honey. I agree. Other print ads that really stuck with me. The boss is just so hard because we're bombarded with so many of them every day. I know it's like I've seen so many, but like I know that after this, I'll think of some of them. Maybe we'll just do like a slideshow in a couple of years. In a couple of years. I'll unread the pod. Once you're okay. Once your apartment's done, make renovate it. Jennifer Anna Simfer smart water. Yeah. Wow. I fucking loved Jennifer Anna Simfer smart water. I think it's in day and now. And I loved Rihanna for, um, Vitacoco. Vitacoco. I love when I had John Hamd do a voiceover for a car. You know, I see I'm a Viola Davis for Delta kind of girl. Well, that's huge. They go skip the ad and I go, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I want to hear this all the way through. If I never saw Tom Brady's face again, I'd be okay. Oh my God. You know, so funny. I got to tell Fay about him kissing his son twice. That's awesome. He's so mean. It's awesome to share that. Kiss me once and he goes, kiss me again. It's so me. He has like a web series on Delta. Like about like trying stuff. We got to get right on Delta. Rissa. Come on. It's like, it's like Tom Brady tried stuff. You know, and so, uh, Oh, anything Megan the Stallions and all by Duncan has been having a lot of fun lately. Duncan's been playing with form from Sabrina to, I believe it. Megan the Stallion did Duncan, right? And I think Sierra did Duncan. Duncan is like, and then Ben Aff, like doing Duncan is really funny to me. They're smart for that. I like when the brands are in on it a little bit. I think so too. That's fun. I want to think of some big fashion campaigns that I remember seeing and being like, well, Steve Madden with the tiny bot like the, oh my god. They're so curbacious. The Bradstalls of it. Yeah, really, really fabulous. Drew Barrymore from MU, Barbie. I enjoy being a girl. Oh, I haven't seen that. It's like a huge like, it's like a, it's a movement. Well, it was from when we were children. It's a revolution. Yeah, totally. Also, um, Muzzy that would teach you French. Just, just sweet Lajoum B. It was like tapes you could get as a kid and you could learn French. I do remember that hooked on phonics was a big thing and my sister's always hit Benny, hooked on phonics like making fun of me. Well, that was also when, so Disney only, no comment. Disney only did ads for Disney stuff on Disney, but then Nickelodeon, you had probably like the same 10 ads for like Nerf guns and start, start, start bright. Yeah. Starlight was a called bright, bright light or something. Oh, yeah, yeah, I know where you're talking about. Put the little thingies in and you make designs. Oh, I love the, oh my god, so true. Or the like tracing thing. Or there's something where you could like, almost like make a Jackson Paula or you could go. Oh, yeah. Did any of the big bubbles? Did anyone have those? Well, I don't know because that's not the type of thing my mom would ever let me do. Yeah, same. That wasn't something we ordered. We, you know, my mom was like strictly dolls and these, and they better look like fucking horrors, by the way. And they did. And they did check. Well, obviously this ties into my with Mad Men, which I find to be such an impressive program because not only were they creating these incredibly rich backstories for all the characters, but then they were taking brands and making really good ad campaigns for these real brands that were an ever actual campaign. So it's just like, he came up with this tagline for Jaguar. It's really powerful pros. There's like a whole Heinz beans storyline. There's Hershey's. There's, can I say something too really quick? Frost. Frost yourself. Yes. Frost yourself. Diamonds are for every one. And when she's at the table and goes diamonds are for everyone. So anyone can have a dime. Best taking away. It's special. You know what I'm talking about? Totally. And Shalom Harlow is looking at Matthew like you are so fucking done. Good luck getting this case. Good luck booking landing this client. I love that being like just that's one of the jobs someone does in New York. They do advertising for a magazine. And it's probably like GQ or something. That's like in so many movies. Well, you have to move units. And I will. Yeah. I also think it's probably frustrating for people that come from a legitimate ad advertising background to watch maybe sort of like how it's become for like anyone can do an ad now. But it's like anyone can do an ad, but not anyone can do a great ad. Yeah, you can do an ad, but you can't do Benny drama for Sally Hanson Pride collection. You couldn't do judge beauty. You're the fucking luck. You couldn't do your door. It's your diamonds are fucking dead. What does that even mean? I love it. It's like I don't want to wear diamonds. I just want to be in the, oh, you know, I know it was such a cute one. when Mr. Osheri with Natalie Portman. - I know, I love that one. - I love that one. - I love that one, that's such a good one. And then, Dua Lipa, Libre, you know? - Libre, yeah. - I mean, fragrance is so fun. - Well, because they're little movies. - Yeah. - Thank you to all the people that came up with these beautiful ads. Your legacy is very much live and well. - There's art in all of them. I think there's something beautiful. I mean, the absolute hunk, I don't think that was it. Was that a real, I mean, it was definitely an-- - Absolute, how great ads. - Absolute was obviously, they paid for that. I love their new one with Madonna. - Absolutely. - That's like, it was like absolute icon. Also, you know, it was great ones, Mac. Viva Glam with RuPaul. That's like, oh, I'm so glad I remembered that one. That is like what I'm talking about. - Really good. And I remember Viva Glam would be like Fergie or Christina Aguilera in the mall. And I'd be like, those are my people, by the way. - To all Viva Paddy's special sauce lettuce cheese. And something, something on a sesame seed bun, do you get that? And it's butt up, butt up, butt up, I'm loving it. - I'm loving it, isn't, I'm loving it made by Ferrell. He came up with that. And it's just in Timberlake's voice, I think. - Yeah. - This is gonna ruin the world tour. I think about so consistently. - And then he goes, what tour? - Yeah. - Anything we should end there. - I agree. - We don't do ride or die when we do a carpool, but we're just happy to have you. - 'Cause I ride and die for this one minute. - That's what I'm advertising. - Next week, Halloween. - Spooky, I'd say, so we said we weren't gonna do it, but I found the, I found my way in the middle. - You found the person there. - I've never had you say yes so fast to something new like this. - It was, it was if not just yes, it was a fuck yeah. - You said it with your whole body. - I said it with verb, I can't wait. - This year I'm gonna be a woman. Wait, 'cause I wasn't last year, I was a fox. I was a male fox. - Info prosthetics. - That, I can't believe we managed to do that. I'm not in prosthetics this year. - Well, we don't know that yet. We're not sure. Where's my salad? - Me as Jack Skellington and Dancing with the Stars. Where's my salad? - Dancing the waltz. (laughing) Queer is supposed to be a dream. - We love you, Strange Podcasts. Have a good day everyone. - And as Chris has said, love you, (beep) (upbeat music) - Oh, my accent. - Anything but eyes on the road. (screaming) - There you go. (upbeat music) - Rye, rye, rye, rye, rye.
