to run and i i say afraid too because nine days everybody want to talk like they got none but nine days people just feel that the quarterback position should only be played one way and that's not the case i've suffered from it lamar jackson is suffering from it right now where people are questioning your style and i believe the ultimate gamemanship of football is hey get to the last rectangle on the field that's the end zone if you throw if you run if you whatever just get there with the ball in your hands and from the film and the footage that i've seen from from byron it's just been something where it's like okay he can run and he he's not afraid to run i think too many times quarterbacks feel like oh man well i'm not throwing in that man listen bro be effective and the more more different things that you possess to the defense as things that they have to get prepared for do it so well what quarterbacks do you think have fallen victim to that because you're right it did seem for a time and like for you something like they talk about in houston how cj don't run as much anymore or whatever and so it can it seems like it's it's a criticism that can sometimes get in the heads of quarterbacks have they been into the quarterbacks that you've noticed that with current yeah or in recent memory in recent memories for sure you know i shared a field you know on saturday with uh i within the confines of the sport then you should do it so let me ask you one question on it one more question on this jayden daniels guy from my school lsu is a dude who has dynamic running ability right but cam sometimes he takes some hits what do you say to the people that say when you run the ball it does expose the quarterback to hits when the team's goal on offense is to protect the quarterback and the hits that the quarterback takes sometimes shortens their career or their overall effectiveness the biggest misconception of cam newton's career is that he had a very physical running style that impacted his tenure in the league that's false oh you don't think that's true my injuries came in the pocket brother as a runner it's almost like it's almost like being in an uber or a lift whatever you're driving or somebody else is driving you in hopes to get you to that destination when you're in the pocket people are protecting you where you just we're shooting our show fourth and one and one of our uh associate producers was saying like hey why didn't jackson dart see the rush coming he's like well first off the the line is sliding this way he's assuming that he's protected because he's in the box count of guys getting protected you you you you don't see the rush or you're not supposed to see the rush you can feel it but you're not supposed to actually be looking at it while guys are you know running downfield but i say that to say i felt more protected when i was running the ball because i can take myself yeah so that uber analogy is you go from riding in a car to driving the car i know when to stop i only can say stop stop stop stop stop stop stop and hope that it stops but when you're running for jayden daniels he's well aware of his protection and it could be something as simple as slide it could be something as simple as go down it could be something as simple as go out of bounds and i was guilty of of of being the hammer when i was running but you never saw somebody just haul off and hit me when i wasn't the aggressor that was always my tactic it's like i play a position that gives me the ability to say okay nah i can't run up against buddy but you know if i'm ready i'm like okay i know i can i can run over buddy so that was always my mentality just turning back the clock a little bit uh cam to your time in college uh you know you mentioned it like being able to decide hey i gotta i gotta make a play here i gotta get a first down i gotta run i gotta do whatever it takes here um do you have like kind of a favorite moment or memory from your time at auburn where you were just like that was the game whether it was the georgia game the iron bowl comeback like a time where you're just like i'm gonna have to take over this game and it actually can just do whatever i want on here uh that's a great question and and we had a lot of success at auburn i am and i always attest we wasn't the most talented team we just was the best team you know like everybody knew what they were there to do you didn't have guys bickering or complaining and saying like hey bruh why they ain't throwing me you know why we can't stop it man why i can't man stop it you know you're not supposed to be like we we never had that it got to the point now where coach stop being cute give cam the ball all right cool give me the ball and if everybody does their job i can take on one guy you feel me so that game to me was lsu why lsu is because that was the game where lsu that year was the favorite in the sec if not the the the national spectrum they were bullies they had the number one defense they had patrick peterson they had uh clayborne they had honey badger they had a slew of different talent and leading up into that game we were successful with teams but versus the bully though how you gonna react versus the bully where i'm from by way of wakanda by way of atlanta georgia you don't get no reps by doing that against the rye or university of phoenix or itt tech you get no reps by saying what you do with somebody well you're not supposed to be doing this and lsu was the game that we weren't supposed to have the success the heisman moment run was only the heisman moment run because it was versus lsu i've had way more sexier runs versus lesser talented teams you know when you talk about the art no no shade arkansas states or you know the the akron's or the elon i'm supposed to do that but versus the teams that you're not supposed to do it to then okay that's how we you know you know we're not supposed to do it to then okay that's how we you know we're not supposed to do it consider something i got a question though van can you step up i'm stepping up right here what's up what's up do you feel a way that lsu is accepting former nfl players oh i i do i absolutely do i i feel i definitely feel a way like on this podcast and look once again i'm a fan baton rouge born and raised i love lsu right but on this podcast i've talked about the slippery slope that college football is in uh from having these players come back and the way that this works and i'm not to the point to i love the tigers almost more than anything in sports but i think this is wrong i think it's wrong i think it stunts the growth of the younger players i think it leads off of a cliff as far as like what where college football your will where you're trying to make your opponent break from extracurricular talking or taunting before and after the during the play blah blah blah and at at that point there were moments in that game where it went from rah rah rah to oh nah bro hey you're true yeah and that's an appreciation that you have where it's like oh yeah yeah he wanted to but if it was versus anyone else nobody would feel that way yeah you know i'm saying and and with me having so many connections to the youth with having my all-star team and things like that i'm like bro we're playing a team that that's expected of you if you have the same performance versus a team that you're not supposed to or or quote-unquote not the favorite i will respect it more that's why we have vegas odds vegas odds vegas odds have ways because i wanted to follow up on the jayden on the jayden daniels piece of this because we we had this debate up here the other weekend obviously at auburn they retired your number last year right uh and i know that that probably was a big deal to you i'm sure you really appreciated that and we've been talking about what's been going on in the last couple of years what's been going on with jayden daniels at lsu and a lot of people can say and a lot of people have told me that they don't agree with the way jayden daniels did it but what i'm thinking about on the other end cam is how lsu has responded in that they've mocked him put the number five number up those video or the kids you know talking about number five in the locker room and the reason i'm asking you is this there's something i've sort of noticed over the years and i want to see if you are seeing this trend either i think i grew up in a country where you're rooting for warren moon no you know i'm a houston oils fan and there was a regard we had for black quarterbacks and the players have for black quarterbacks at the time that they were almost heroic because everybody knew what it took to get to that position but i've noticed over the last couple generations there's been sort of like a uh a degradation in the admiration people have for black quarterbacks and they get treated in ways that white quarterbacks don't because i think about how like the seahawks were talking about russ and criticizing him or when gino got assaulted in the locker room or how people talked about donovan or even kelvin benjamin your former teammate talking about your accuracy in the media and i'm just wondering if that's something that you have noticed yourself about the way sometimes great black quarterbacks don't get the regard that they got in the past this is a very touchy topic and i just attested to we can't be so sensitive i think yeah it is something special to be a minority quarterback all right but also what jayden daniels did it may not have been him but what we should learn from this is we don't care if you were responsible or not your team put out a message and nobody cares that it was john doe public a pr person on jayden daniels team reaches out to lsu it's going to always go back to jayden daniels was it a good look for him i don't believe it was and he now of course had to rekindle and say publicly like hey that was my team doing it but my message was it is hire your hire a team or y'all come up with a plan collectively because if somebody goes out here where and they they joke about jayden and his mom's relationship all the time it's like if your mom go out here your dad go out here your uncle go out here and they're like hey jayden and speak on your behalf this still is a representation to you i think all athletes should take into consideration and i don't even think that there's a natural way to find this out but all athletes should find out why you're getting recruited by that school do you guys retire numbers and if it's not important to you then it is what it is if it is important to you that's just something to consider i decided to go to blah blah because they were tired numbers i plan on having my number retired and i don't want nobody else to wear blank number when i get done those are my intentions when you went to a school that doesn't retire a number from what my research tells me that there's only one number retired does anybody know what that number is is it billy cannon billy cannon's number yeah yeah number 20 yeah who the hell want to wear number 20 anyway i'm like that's the only number out of all the greats that that came in came through lsu the joe burrows is not even retired the the patrick peterson's that seven number of i was sharing a locker with a person or sharing a locker room with an individual that they believed was better than me and yes he was great but i didn't believe he was better than me and if sometimes you take even the most smallest chip to put on your shoulder to make you become a better version of yourself do it i played behind tebow i did not think that team tebow was better than me but i had to prove it i didn't get to just say he's not better than me and then that would be the one-off be-all it was up to me to say hey what you gonna do with your opportunity so people forget i was only at auburn for a year and that legacy will live on forever but what went into that year was way more than what the camera could show so what went into that year was way more than what the them autonomy to check anything so old phones new phones cameras uh uh bank accounts bank statements where do you get this from where do you get that from they did a thorough investigation heavy on the thorough and all those things all the while still trying to change my family's dynamic off of the game of football so i had it was a different energy that i was playing with let me ask you year 2010 there was another undefeated rose bowl championship team that year the tcu horn frogs and at the end of the year auburn is undefeated and tcu is undefeated so do you really think of yourself as a full national champion when there's a whole other power forward national champion right joe went to tcu by the way joe went to tcu he played he played at tcu exactly and i'm an andy dalton fan not not not that year yeah they had a magical year but outside of andy dalton i'm like but oregon oregon was undefeated too yeah they were so it wasn't like it wasn't like it was like uh what year was that the usc oklahoma game where oklahoma jumped auburn for the national championship like yeah 2003 you know it's like we play who we were supposed to play so are you gonna throw tcu in there i'm like all right well tell me who tcu beat that year okay oh wait oh we oh we can definitely do that hold on derek he's like smu hey don't don't do that they'd be they'd be rice they'd be oregon state we'd be oregon state they were 24 they were number 24 tennessee tech baylor and smu and colorado state that's not an easy place to win wyoming byu air force at unlv at number six utah and they won that game 47 to 7 and that's at number six utah san diego state at new mexico and then of course we beat wisconsin in the rose ball boy that is the piss porous tissue i can't believe you just did that they beat a number four and a number six that year and two other ranked teams how many did i ever beat that year let's see so so i will flip it in this dynamic okay i'm not going to say that their schedule was weaker than ours our schedule was more stronger than than their schedule because i could tell you who we played against on those teams that we played against you see what i'm saying we played against the university of georgia team that had aj green we played against an lsc team that pat patrick peterson we played against alabama team that had julio jones we played against a a a a clemson team that had a bowen who also was a holly touted you know defensive lineman a south carolina team that has stefan gilmore we played against these teams that wow these are who we playing against a ryan mallet Arkansas team and that's just seven games out of a 12 to the 13 game gauntlet so when you talk about san diego state who did san diego who did smu have who like all these players team achievements mean more than personal achievements no i believe that personal achievements does matter in a team dynamic because we know who uphold or who upheld their end of the bargain right we know that we need 11 individuals doing their job the best that they can do it not one person trying to do 11 different jobs right i'm always reminded of of this this conversation because people who are not team players always bring up what you didn't ring you didn't win a ring well i'm like i won a national champion i've won like now in any dynamic i'm from atlanta georgia and and it's important to people to understand this nobody no like i'm living the um the hood american dream you cannot tell me what i cannot do like i'm from college park so to add to what i'm saying you know i'm from college park so to add to what i'm saying to have achieved what i've achieved is something that people from where i'm from they don't what you did what like me me at career day saying hey cam what do the person who didn't match individuals success with team success because the only time that that didn't hold true was winning a super bowl but knowing what i know now about people even if i would have won super bowl they would have poked fun at nah well he didn't do that or no well it wasn't the same time it's like man come on i played in the era where peyton manning was was on the field where tom brady was drew breeze was like matt ryan was ben roethlisberger like philip rivers eli manning all these players were were were quarterbacks when i won the mvp so for for all that to still have my culture card where i can go to any spade table around america and pipe it up you feel i'm saying but also it comes to a time where it's like wow i forget yes you do whether it's auburn or it's carolina you cannot it'd be hard for you to erase the impact and i think impact does matter in regards to the body of work that goes into a an athlete what did you do to change or impact the game because when i first came into the league i had so many misconceptions and miscomparables oh man cam is like ben roffett uh no but cam's like michael i ain't a little bigger than well cam's like it i was before the time yeah you know when when michael vick came it was just like okay he's a better version of steve young or randall cunningham and these different things not to say that the warm moons didn't pave the way the steve mcnerris didn't pave the way the vince youngs the marcus russells the doug williams yes donovan mcnab you know that all those guys were like guys impacted me in their own right but now when we look at the league it is i gave an opportunity to others like others had gave an opportunity to me and that's all i really wanted it to be i love it last thing for me cam i just have to ask about this because uh it was a seminal moment in my life 2016 uh conference championship game nfc championship game you have probably the best game i've ever watched a quarterback play leading to that super bowl 15 in one season and you have gz and you have future on the sideline and that is an iconic photo in time how did that come about uh we got the picture pulled up right there like whoa that was just a moment for everybody where we're like man cam's the coolest guy on the planet and he is the mvp and this i felt like you were michael jordan in football at that point uh what particular players and i simply said i can go to where tom brady's from i can go to where peyton manning is from i can go to where all these great quarterbacks are from but they can't go to where i'm from so when you see gz and you see future that was a combination of i'm reminding people like bro i'm still from atlanta and i'm i'm repping it proud like these were these were the artists to be you week zero van i'll start with you first here uh what was one big takeaway you had from the weekend so i was able to watch usc play san jose state and i expected physical dominance from sc particularly up front on the defensive side now i have to say they did not have jakeem stewart in this game he did not play and really across the game there were some other notable absences from the sc roster but i will say that the entire game it seemed as if san jose state had clean pockets to work with it did not seem like the front four of sc could dominate the front four of san jose state right um waifu got in there a couple of times and had some pressures but i'm looking at this front four from sc we'll have to reserve judgment to when stewart gets back but if they even with their twos or their remaining starters if they couldn't get consistent pressure on san jose state i think it's going to be tough sledding for them in the big 10 with some of the teams that they have to play man i was expecting them to be a little bit more dominant in the trenches on defense and i saw that so you left that game feeling concerned for the trojans not necessarily concerned a lot of people are going to look at the score and say that sc didn't cover and that uh you know the score the spread should have been larger but if you watch the actual game then you know that it was backups for SC that was in the game in the fourth quarter and San Jose State to their credit continued to compete in the game for the entire game right so they made up some points in the fourth quarter but I'm talking about when it was good on good and when it was good on good I saw clean pockets for San Jose State I saw an SC defense that you want to see running around creating havoc with their hair on fire and they didn't really do that from what I'm watching against an inferior opponent so maybe it's nothing or maybe it's a sign of things to come what about the fans uh the lack of attendance I mean that's obviously been a big talking point we got that in our headlines later Joey McGuire head coach of Texas Tech talking about that is that a concern Joel when you see an empty stadium there at the Coliseum I know that you know we already have uh some conversations kind of drumming up everywhere about USC fans being fair weathered and all this sort of stuff does that is that something you actually flagging you know worry about no I mean I guess if I ran the athletic department it would be something to monitor because yeah you want to have people come well that's the thing it was I understand it was over 90 degrees hot uh it's it's San Jose State you know it's a hard sell for people to be like I want to go out in the middle of that heat and sit down also Lincoln Riley doesn't really endear himself to the fan base very often you know he doesn't really recruit people to come to games like I I feel like I'm not going to be able to do that I'm not going to be able to do that like that's a part of it too well so yeah I would imagine that once they start winning or maybe by the time Oregon comes I bet the Coliseum is going to be pretty packed out for that game that week so you know but yeah I mean that's kind of the problem with the scheduling as it is now and this is why all these these leagues are consolidating is to avoid fewer of those games that have fewer of those games than we currently have on the schedule because you know I mean I understand why USC did it given what happened to my favorite football team I'll say this the heat in LA aided by obviously changes in the climate the heat in LA has been I don't know man it's been some oppressive type shit right damn really 80 82 percent humidity it's this is like the essence you know I'm saying so like I'm saying that for people that didn't want to come out this game was a little earlier for people who didn't want to come out and sit in the heat in downtown LA I can't really but for San Jose State I make it so that I don't read too much into this because things can change right like it's a and when I think about what happened Jaden Craig TCU starting quarterback is that really who he is he's making his first start with his team minus two starting receivers he had to play against the defense coordinated by the defensive mind of our lifetimes who had a whole offseason good to prepare for him thousands of ways thousands of miles away from home in terrible weather conditions is that really supposed to tell me who Jaden Craig is and who's gonna be for the rest of the season I don't know I would have liked it if he had played better but I'm just trying to be like okay it's a weird circumstance the favorite has lost in Ireland for the last five years so I was like maybe maybe maybe that's not what's what's going on like I was that's your one big reaction excuses I was sleeping through the coat I was like the coat was putting me to sleep yeah it's cope what you mean everybody everybody up here is gonna see their teams lose this uh like this year everybody up here look Carolina gonna lose the Tigers gonna lose my fucking Tiger and TCU has already got the bandwagon started with the losing bro I'm not saying they're better but nigga they lost right I mean I understand they lost but there's a context to every loss and I know that teams go over to Ireland and play fucked up like it's always weird and I mean TCU had like a crazy locker room incident going on in the background too so I just that affected their defense and one of their starting offensive receivers so it's just a lot of turmoil and they went to the weirdest place that you could possibly play and actually if I somebody's gonna have to explain to me the benefits of playing in Dublin yeah yeah really because like you were trying to get us to go and I was like it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to go all the way over to Ireland for a college football game and they come back I don't understand the point of it in any world all right by the way when they pulled out back on Ireland and I saw Ireland in the shots that should look like Birmingham to me I didn't see like like oh wow I'm not using it I'm just saying yeah it kind of is okay but maybe not because Birmingham's nice Birmingham is a great thing Birmingham is a great town but like what I'm saying is when I when I saw Ireland on the thing I was like oh shit okay it look at what's the what's the big deal of playing a college football game in Ireland I wait actually this island is Dublin the hot shit or is it like the countryside outside of Dublin that people go to Ireland where's Stonehenge yeah I think it's Dublin's the city obviously like you're trying to get the city vibes but then the countryside's the the pretty part we're Stonehenge great golf over there Joel for you yeah I mean yeah right my reaction is that I hope that's not who TCU is and you're hoping that you get a better version of Jaden Craig I mean the fourth and two that a lot of people kind of went after him for yeah you know why didn't he just run for the first down I really don't think he was going to get there he wasn't gonna make it if you look at the pursuit that was coming after him he was not gonna make that first down I'll be honest with you guys I don't feel like North Carolina North Carolina could play better they left a lot of big plays on the field from the quarterback position they played well enough to win this game but North Carolina it's not like they went out there and completely dominated any way it was first game kind of same situation for them as well yeah that's true i mean that's absolutely right and i i'm not gonna spoil the story that i'm working on but i was like hey man you know that is still bill belichick like he knows football like i don't believe that he's a football idiot like things just went wrong last year and again that team wasn't so close to being they were pretty close to being a solid six and six seven and five team last year just and that's the game that they lost last year they lost those one score games and honestly that game was trending into a situation where they lose that game 17 to 15 right they score a touchdown there at the end for tcu and then north carolina has a missed field goal off a turnover and that's the difference in the game and then last year that's how those games ended up going and i think that's why you saw bill belichick i've never seen him have so much emotion yeah he was a game man yeah when billy edwards draws the offsides there at the end of the game and he does first down yeah yeah i mean we haven't seen bill belichick actually show emotion and emote like that since he got to north carolina now can i ask you a question to me when when was the last time because we can talk about last year if we want right but even then there was still some expectations when was the last time bill belichick had to deal with the suck and i'm not talking about him and jordan on a crazy night i'm talking about when was the last time bill belichick had to deal with the fact that people thought he was a good player and he was a good player and he was a good player and he sucked and when i watched him coach that game i saw him inch by inch yard by yard be into the performance of that team and that bodes well for north carolina season if that's the kind of dedication that he's bringing right now uh to the field yeah i mean look man he he he everywhere he's been the first year is a little weird like that is the story of his career even back into the nfl so yeah i mean i think that uh bill belichick is highly motivated to prove that he's not the idiot that a lot of people seem to think that he is and the laughingstock i mean look at what ben and terry did at the hall of fame like making a whole speech during his hall of fame speech about bill belichick you know grading his girlfriend's cheerleading competition like i think a lot of that is actually in his mind and he may act like he doesn't see it but he does he definitely feels and look last year sonny dykes i mean people talked about how much heat they took pleasure in embarrassing belichick like you heard they reported about that and talked about how he took a real good pleasure in embarrassing and like you know humbling that that staff the conference of 33rd nfl team so bill belichick probably remember that shit too he probably remember what sonny what sonny dykes had to say about him and their organization or what he heard that they said so yeah man he's a proud man i i i just don't think that they're going to be a horrible team in year two yeah they held him scoreless after the first quarter and if you look at just last year the difference i mean 38 points last year for tcu 542 yards allowed 258 rushing yards seven and a half yards per play yeah and then you flip it to this game 281 total yards 106 rushing yards and four and then you include three qb sacks in that as well so i mean this was a bill belichick defense obviously xavier lewis was the real star of this game two sacks four and a half tackles for loss and as far as setting the edge like they made some adjustments on the line especially the defensive line where they got a little bit more outside leverage and they contained jade and craig in the pocket and led to that fourth and two play where he wasn't able to get to the outside and get a first down easily i mean these are all decisions that were made by belichick on the defensive side after that outside zone by jeremy pain stopped working the tc didn't have another counterpunch they were just like absolutely belichick said it belichick said he was just like yeah they didn't really change up too much pain pain was running really really well and had a great game honestly like pain was running really well but it seemed like once they kind of got keyed in on what the fastball was coming from the offense there was nothing else to it and also a surprising lack of using the quarterback and the running back in tandem to get the running back going of taking some stuff that was short and easy getting the defense off their heels on their heels should i say to be able to free up some things in the late third quarter and fourth quarter of the game when the offense got a little stagnant like it was a really really poorly executed offensive game late during the clutch by tcu yeah then on the flip side we have to give bobby petrino some credit i mean he was drawing up some great stuff coach dan casey who i love does some great work puts out some great videos talking about kind of the modern triple option they were running where uh you know he had billy edwards was an option kind of as like a power a running option they had an outside threat with the running back and then they had jelani thurman who had a great game ohio state transfer in the flat and they had a couple times where that just killed tcu getting him out in space and getting downhill a couple times they missed them there's a throw that they left on the field it could have been worse billy and that was the rain a little bit yeah yeah that's right that's right wait what's his homeboy's name again uh billy edwards billy edwards why did i call him billy miller uh well because i have brain injuries but billy edwards he yeah he's a really good i mean he's a very solid college veteran qb he's not good but he's good enough and that's better than what they had last year with geo lopez and freddie kitchens now you've upgraded to a quarterback that has some ability and a lot of experience with one of the best players in the league offensive minds of the last you know two or three decades so yeah can we get can we get i know spend a ton of time on this but man going into last week tay you had talked about it a lot of people were talking about how nc state was a dark horse in the acc tom and shay talked about it with us they wanted they went from being a dark horse to one of the horses that people gonna have to pick because there's no beef left in the they got out there and got slaughtered what the fuck hell happened to nc state and everybody was talking about them that game was non-competitive yeah that was virginia dominating on the offensive line i mean i've never seen a team just run the ball down someone's throat i mean it looked like an old wisconsin team or something so uh you gotta give virginia a lot of credit in that game and cj bailey he was supposed to have you know kind of a breakout year quarterback he looked completely shell-shocked in that game 12 for 23 and 84 yards that's just not that's not the line if i feel like so i used to have a old sports editor who said that um barry sanders had a game we finished with like negative seven yards one time and he's like that's why he'll never be better than walter payton and so and i don't think that made any sense but i got where he was coming from that walter payton never played that bad in any one game and i kind of felt like 12 for 23 for 84 yards is one of those lines is like oh i don't know if you'll ever be able to play in the nfl if that ever happened to you in college like that's that was a really pathetic showing uh but shout out to tony elliott bro like maybe yeah doing a great job that they've just figured out something at virginia like they get old ass offensive linemen men that have worked jobs on i think their average is like 24 years old on the o-line yeah yeah man and so they figured out a little something and i've heard a little bit about their compensation package which is like they don't have to pay at the top end because they've figured out some other ways to induce athletes to play there so it could be that you know they've got something over there i know my dude malik don't want us talking about virginia because he said nah y'all stay over there y'all stay over there but now man virginia looked really good and they went to acc championship game last year i mean they should have won the acc last year they had 11 wins by all accounts they should have won that game duke kind of had the perfect setup to be the underdog to upset him in overtime so uh they should have been in the playoff and if they were in the playoff miami is not in the playoff and they don't make it to the national championship game are we gonna talk that's a real sliding doors moment are we gonna talk about the line oh nice 9-4-11 haynes king-esque 9-4-11 155 two tuds along a 47 through the air but then running the ball 15 carries 110 yards 7.3 that's a haynes king type performance right there from bow what is bow like was was he was 30 35 years old he's now in his third school because he started at penn state of course yeah and then he was at mizzou last year yeah so now he's at virginia man yeah what does senior mean anymore like there's no red shirt so it's like what is the fifth year no senior now actually means that you have an aarp card you are actually like a senior citizen now when you're yeah both actually not at all i think he's only 22 or 23 but but yeah so like he had a great game and he was able to go out there and get it done virginia looks for real at least in the acc yeah they look like a ranked team um that's for sure so you handle business against nc state nc state every single year though they get better as the year goes on so i suspect that they will be better by the time we get to october november so we'll see what happens there uh any more thoughts on uh week zero that stood out to you obviously unlv was supposed to send a message this weekend but memphis was able to come out and shock the world jackson arnold man you know like again he looked He won eight games at Delaware State last year. And they won their opener against a team that actually had a vote in the FCS poll. Stony Brook. So it's not like they beat some Division II school or, you know, whatever, some other MEAC school. They beat. I mean, man, when HBCUs beat a straight-up FCS school that has resources and whatever, that's a big deal, bro. It really is. And so shout out Deshaun Lewis, because I know that they're not working with a lot of money over there, but he's making it work, man. He's apparently a really, really good coach. Of all of these guys who. ex-NFL guys who made the trek to college football, it's more than just, you know, prime that made this happen. There are some guys that are having some success down there. Andrew Luck, his squad, looked like a team that actually has an offense they can build around, so that's something to point out as well. So, yeah. So, Week Zero storylines had actually, you know, checked out for us. So, there's some good stuff, some good stories. But now we get to Week One. We have some really, really good matchups. They start Thursday night. Coach Prime's already talking about how happy he is. Haynes King. Yeah, we're going to raise the roof. Raise the roof. Week One is here. Yeah. We're live, by the way. We're going to talk about it at the end, but we're live on Saturday. Joel will be out here. We're going to have fun. We're going to go live. Billy's going to be out there, too. Because I thought you were going to do LSU, and then I was. So I'm going to rank these. I'm going to rank these games. Okay. So I go Twinkle Bowl, and then second, second, I go Ole Miss Louisville. Well, all of this talk about Louisville and how people expect Louisville to show up on the field. Ole Miss has. A lot of questions to answer. They have what some people believe to be is the best quarterback in college football. If Louisville is as good as people think that they are, and Ole Miss is going to answer the questions and make a run with Lane not there, that's a really interesting game. So I'd say even that was second. Of course, I'm an LSU fan. The game I'm always going to be the most interested in every Saturday is going to be the game that LSU is playing in. But those are two really interesting storylines in college football. It might be the best two running backs going head-to-head in week one, by the way. You know what I mean? Isaac. Yeah, that could be a matchup there to point out as well. UCLA Cal. The only thing that I'm worried about is I saw Tosh talking about how Cal hasn't even been able to prep for UCLA because they've had to focus on getting guys prepared in their own roles. So I think that bodes well for UCLA. So the Twinkle might start out in a good spot. That's an encouraging sign. That's a really fierce rivalry. Those schools. But until you move out to Cali, you don't realize how much those schools don't like each other. Yeah. Well, a lot of kids apply to both. I have some friends out here that like dad went to Berkeley. Son went to UCLA. Dad has a little bit of shade towards his son because he went to UCLA. There's a lot of that. Beautiful schools, man. I love those places. You love California, Joel. Well, I mean, this is Ole Miss, Louisville. it was going to be my pick but i'll just say something about lsu and clemson which is that and van i kind of want you to to are you are you concerned because the things that i think about with lane kiffin is that he's obviously a very good coach like very talented at assembling talent and getting a lot out of it but i also just wonder if there's ever a tipping point where the headlines and the chaos and the attention can distract from what should be going on on the field and i'm sure that could be overstated like maybe it's not affecting or impacting these guys at all but i just would have thought given how lane ended up in baton rouge people there's a lot of ill will for leaving a team in the middle of a playoff run and then stealing players from them and all this other stuff i just kind of thought he would have wanted a quieter entry into the season and so like does the noise concern you at all nope okay okay You like the noise You like the noise huh You want Daquan Wright It's not necessarily that i like the noise is that it doesn't concern me like it it it's i do not care at all here's the deal lane kiffin hasn't won a game at lsu yet right yeah lane kiffin has to go on saturday and prove that his football product can withstand the noise that his football product can withstand the noise that his football product can withstand the product can withstand the expectations that his football product can meet the standard of the fans and the culture of south louisiana anything that he has brought on himself or anything that the team or the school has brought on to themselves doesn't matter anymore what matters now is what happens between the lines in tiger stadium in baton rouge on saturday and it was going to be like that whether there was one headline or 50 headlines lane is not there's been about a hundred like lane was not gonna is not gonna be able to charm his way out of this there's going to be no amount of tweets that are going to substitute for what people expect in baton rouge there's going to be nothing that he can do to meet expectations in baton rouge except win in a dominating fashion what's your expectation for him this year what is what is that a good you I would say lane kiffin season like a good season a good season is would be the playoff right but like my expectation is nine and three but that's my expectation my expectation is nine and three it's a very expensive roster but you have some guys in some places in some positions uh that are gonna have to get used to playing big time football in a way there are holes on this roster if you have some of those guys that come along and like kind of uh you know fill some of those spots on the defensive line a place where you might have to play some younger guys if you had daquan right who is a more traditional past catching tight end rather than what trade as brings which is a more hybrid type of guy that answers some questions but it's not like the team doesn't have actual questions in terms of death and some other places so those things are gonna have to be worked out during the season and he didn't mention sam levin in the same vein as jackson dart where he's like i'm trying to train him to not make mistakes you know to basically accept hey this is a down that we accept defeat sometimes and go for the bigger play later in the game don't make huge mistakes that does seem to be a talking point are you worried about Clemson at all they're they're kind of in a perfect spot they're oh you know nine and a half point dogs there's really not a lot of conversation about them being able to go down there and make an upset happen so they're kind of in a perfect spot to make some noise so I'm always worried so you don't want to ask me I'm worried there's worry I've I've gone to games where we have brutalized gigantic college football foes I've also seen nip and tuck games with Troy at home all right so I'm always worried I think I think Clemson has a lot to play for and I think you're going to get a great effort but we're going to learn as much about the culture at Clemson as we will about the roster of LSU on Saturday yeah I was going to ask which coach has the most pressure on over the weekend I mean obviously you got Ole Miss with Pete Golding you got Lane Kiffin at LSU you got Dabo Sweeney with Clemson maybe you could say Mike Norvell against SMU potentially Joel which one kind of stands out to you I mean I feel like Lane's the right answer but there might be someone else I actually don't know because I mean no matter what they're not going to fire Lane like Lane is locked in for at least a good two three years right now so they're gonna have to put up with it even if it's disappointing this year uh my thought is not Mike Norvell because people seem already inclined to to get rid of him and the only reason Florida State hasn't done it already is because they broke you know and they can't do it and it'll still cost about 50 billion dollars to to buy them out if they fire him at the end of the year or at some point in the middle of the year so like you know it's already bad vibes down there in Tallahassee but man they look bad against New Mexico State and again don't want to overreact to week zero they're still learning out a lot about their team you know the roster heavy program because that's what Mike Norvell has had to do but you know I just man in my lifetime it's shocking to me that Florida State is going into a game this weekend against SMU and SMU is the favorite tough at home just just imagine that in life just somebody told you that even five years ago yeah SMU is going to play at Tallahassee and is a favorite that just that's crazy without Eric Dickerson playing running back yeah no Craig James you know what I'm saying no Richie Dupard well it's great name the horse all right was it the horse what Craig James was his name I mean it may games Ole Miss Louisville we mentioned Notre Dame Wisconsin in Green Bay that's a really fun game you got the Apple Cup you got a rivalry game Wazoo Washington poor Washington State I think Washington State will be better than people think I will say that I think that game's going to be that game's always a little bit weird um a little bit closer than you I mean when Washington State was good you know I actually covered two Apple Cups Tate did you know that I did not I've covered two Apple Cups I got snowed in for the last one there was a snowstorm and we couldn't I couldn't drive back to uh Spokane Spokane's like an hour and a half away yeah that's where most people stay not many not many lodging options and yeah so we were stuck in a press box until late that night so anyway but when Mike Leach was there and they were at their peak Washington still had a stranglehold on them boys and so you know Washington State man they're just they it's unfortunate what has happened to them because the conference realignment uh and they were just kind of out there on their own for two years and so the coaches just keep leaving because they're just like man you know why would I stay at Washington State so they're starting all over again I wish them well because I think college football is more fun when Washington State is good but that's just a really tough situation right now in Seattle uh there will be obviously the sailgate happening with the Washington fans there'll be a lot a lot of Wazoo fans in the building so that'll be a fun game to watch uh Billy can you pop back in
