The suspect, 29-year-old Jamal DeArmond,
who was later determined to be the sole 911 caller,
was transported to the hospital
and treated for two gunshot wounds to the abdomen.
Once medically cleared,
he was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail
on a felony assault charge
involving attempted injury to a peace officer,
his bail was set at $300,000,
and according to court records,
no sentencing date has been set.
Jamal is considered innocent
unless proven guilty in a court of law.
I'll quote something afterwards
I think is worth talking about.
Because when they asked the officer
how many rounds he fired,
he said about three,
and it was actually four.
Now, somebody watching that
might immediately say,
how come he doesn't know?
Because your memory isn't a body camera.
There's actually research showing
that under that kind of stress,
officers can remember certain details differently,
even how many shots were fired.
Something I learned about schizophrenia
is when somebody's hearing voices to them,
those voices can feel real.
But think about how difficult
that makes a situation like this,
because these officers are talking to Jamal,
but they may not be the only voices he's listening to.
And hearing these cops talk to Jamal afterward
almost broke me.
They were trying to calm him down,
still treating him like a human being.
Because of course,
you have to stop the threat,
but you can still care about the person.
