Bryson trending toward Augusta, Valspar as rollback antidote, & Slow play shaming

Now the shotgun's starting golf is full of mathematics. There's a lot of setup work that we have to do in order to make a tournament work. So, I'm going to demonstrate to you just exactly how we do a shotgun start here. And here we go. All right, all right, all right. Gentlemen! Start your engine! [Music] Greetings and welcome to a Monday edition of the Shotgun Start. It is March 23rd, Andy. How are we doing? Brendan! I'm doing great. It's a victory Monday. What a weekend for the Big Ten. I'm impressed. I have to say, I'm impressed. I fell asleep last night for UCLA. You know, historic traditional Big Ten power was taking on Yukon. But I haven't expected to wake up to them. It was like a four point game when I fell asleep to them advancing to the sweet 16 as well. Great weekend for the Big Ten. For most of my adult life, I'll let you jump in. I'm impartial. I don't really care about Big Ten. Go to bed. Happy they're doing well. Most of my adult life, the Big Ten basketball has been like like, drudgery, like not particularly enjoyable to watch. They have one national championship in a while. But they had like a couple top heavy teams in Ohio State, but like bad basketball. Just in my opinion, ACC was fun, biggie. It's like, they're a powerhouse and fun to watch. It's been incredible. And that's been the last few years, not just this year. So, congrats to your confidence, I guess. You get about side Big Ten reps, but you're missing the biggest Big Ten win. Matt Fitt, Matt he fits Northwestern legend. Outdual is another Northwestern legend to win the Valspar. As fellow team or as fellow alumnus, David Lipsky, who might I think be an actual alumnus? I could be wrong. I believe Lipsky graduated. Fittie obviously had his eight weeks of glory there. Oh, I think eight is eight. Is that confirmed or was it like I think it's about eight? All right. I feel good about eight. Once I spoke to someone pretty high up in the athletic director department about it and kind of was poking fun at it. They didn't take kindly to. Oh, really? They're sensitive about. Well, that's because they claim that I've got my honorary doctorate here. I've got mine over here. I'm in Northwestern University. My frame cracked and luggage on the on the flight home from Chicago, but that doesn't mean it's I've got a it's not going in the bin. I just got to get a new piece of glass over the front of it. But yeah, we do have an honorary doctorate. They claim they claim the hell out of Maddie fits. So I can say why they took offense to you suggesting it was only a cup of coffee. We're we're seeing still ours. And he's described to me as we had a moment where we could embrace it or we can reject it. We've decided to embrace it. And we're really happy with us embrace again. I'll never forget like walking around the masters like seven eight years like a long time ago. There's like all these people in purple following Matt Fitz, like really just totally claiming him. They really lead into that even though he was you know, barely barely there, but congrats to Northwestern on that win. Not the NCAA tournament, but they do have a win at the Valspark Championship. Do you want to react to your teams advancing? You and PJ going to the sweet 16. Is that going to require more than the Koachivaria discussion if we go into basketball? I think there I think it's a big deal. I think you're going to Houston PJs coming to DC. St. John's wins at the buzzer. Try to give it away. Try to gag it up to Kansas. Illinois kind of a wagon. And they're saying we haven't played anybody with played. And which is not a real basketball team. And then we played ECU whose guard got their star freshman guard got hurt on like the second play of the game. So I do think like we have had a cake walk. That being said, playing Houston in Houston's really really tough draw. I have to just say that that's kind of preposterous. Where the margins between two and three are very slim. Right. I like a re ranked article and they like re ranked the teams in the in the in the left. And it's like I think Houston was four. We were five. So four or five of the remaining 16 teams play in Houston. And one of the teams is Houston that that doesn't seem right in a sweet 16 matchup to not like a regional final. That's the way the cookie crumbles in this tournament. They don't they don't re receipt. PJ I'm excited. Because I don't have to hear anymore about the Darren Peterson saga at Kansas. Thank you for taking that out of my life. Let me tell you the Darren Peterson experience as an opposing team yesterday. I was just like waiting, waiting, sitting on the couch, like yelling at the TV, like fine 22. He's going to take this game over. He's going to take this game over and then he just did not at all. It was kind of bizarre, not impressed Darren Peterson. He's very nice. North Ohio is up. Darren Peterson. I should mention. Yeah, he it was I'm happy for you. Did you think you're going to win? I mean, yeah, we were up by 15 with like five minutes left. Yeah, I thought we were going to win. And then it didn't like they were watching that. Rick Rick stopped coaching for like the last seven minutes of the game, which was kind of bizarre. But other than that, it was great. First time in my life. Literally was two months from being born the last time. It's been a while. This is great. I don't want to congrats the ball. Who do you got? You got Arizona next. No, he got Duke, baby. Duke. Duke and DC. It's going to be a fun. We got Duke. Duke St. John's Connecticut and Michigan State and DC. Good. Nice little regional. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you to the committee. Thank you to the committee for setting the stop putting putting the two actually good big East teams in the same region because that makes sense. But you know, you can say, John's. You can say John's. We got the corn bowl. And the sweet 16 with the big 10. All right. Yeah. We got two big 10 teams playing each other in the sweet 16. Your conference isn't a real conference. All right. All right. You know, he got two teams. We have we have six in the sweet 16 and two of them are playing each other. I think worse would have been Vandy Florida after they just played in this. It just played one versus five. But you know, the corn bowl will suffice to corn bowl is going to be great. DC by the way, that regional will be loaded up with just hate. One of my takeaways we went on Friday to Philly is I think like Yukon might be the new Duke for whatever these gems the years are. And like they obviously maybe they don't have a super hateable player and like a Christian late nerd. And I think they're going to be really good at it. I think they're going to be really good at it. They're going to be really good at it. They're going to be good at it. or something next year. It's kind of interesting how that happened, like just watching anybody with Go Toe Toe with these Power Five schools. I was sexed with somebody about the Illinois game and, you know, somebody of influence. And I was like, I was like, you know, that guard on VCU is really good. The freshman, you should go get them in the portal. Yeah. Like, yeah. Yeah. The scouting game. It's like, just go, hey, we like your game. Come on over. Right. It's like somebody, somebody did a picture of Bill Self in the handshake line against Cal Baptist with their center who's like seven, two and he was talking to him. It was like, hey, do you have eligibility left? Like, do you count? Do you see that game? The Arkansas game against a high point like that point guard. That guy is getting paid. Right. It's, yeah. It's interesting. I don't know. In one way, you will never have Steph Curry at Davidson again, probably, Wally's, Irving, I like these famous instances of it happening. But then you also end up with a sweet 16 regional that's you come Michigan state, you know, St. John's and Duke. I don't know. I think everybody loves like the great, Cinderella. Yeah. Until it gets to the second weekend. And they're like, wait a second. Why do I have to watch George Mason? St. Peter's versus, you know, yeah, get wop walloped by, you know, why is NC state in the final four? Yeah. My favorite guy was the, my favorite guy was the St. Louis Center. Avila. Yeah. I mean, that guy, that guy's a legend. That guy. I love that. Leaning into his brand. I thought they would give Michigan a little more of a game than they did. All right. That does it. NC double eight minute. Yeah. That's the double eight minute. Yeah. A big, I know we talked about it a lot last week. I just want to say big win for Keegan Bradley gets off the schneide. That's been it. Just hit after hit after hit. I'm just happy for Keegan. I'd be worried about you. I'm worried for you that he's going to show up. I, I too am worried. Because I know what happened last year. It's cooler. It's cooler. So I think say, John's fans need a unite and just put something out there that's like a go fund me. That's that gets a level that that Keegan will sell his ticket. Because you're offering him so much money to not come. Yeah. Can we it? Can we, can we like, is he in the field for he's said, I'm going to look that up right now. I'm going to cross. I expect so. I mean, the frogs we know are done, done and dusted. So he doesn't have to worry about any conflicts this week. Maybe. How about how about TGL? Big night. Do you feel like it's being overshadowed at all? Uh, did to get the, the brothers that deserved leading into its championship, uh, starting here. I don't know how to answer that question. What did it deserve? I don't know. I mean, you have Kalmork how is injured and oxe batilla on a flight to India. So you got those two are missing from your finals, which just happens. You've got Kizner Kizner, Homa. And who's the third team of my team? Tom Sim. Tom Sim. Against, uh, Tagala Rose. And God, my brain is off. Who's the third guy for L.A. Tagala Rose and Fleetwood. So he got that tonight. I guess, you know, I'm locked in as usual. I don't think it's being overshadowed. I will say it is hilarious that one of the best players on one of the championship teams is not there for the championship, but rather on a flight to India. That is such a, I mean, I get, I get wanting to go play the India, the India tournament at DLF. I understand just not a good time to do it before the Masters. I guess it's probably enough time to reacclimate. Yeah, it's not ideal. Not ideally how you draw it up, right? He's a, he's a hero brand ambassador is the thing. And they're the sponsor title sponsor, obviously. I interviewed him last year. It caves value with the hero with Dr. Mungal. I didn't use it for anything. There wasn't much in it, but he's a hero and doctor. The air quotes is PJ reminds us. Yeah. So it's not ideal. I don't know if it was overshadowed, but TGL is being overshadowed, but that will segue us to, I think, a Valspar that's overshadowed. One thing I was thinking completely overshadowed. I was thinking about like the schedule and all this probably don't need a golf tournament the week after the players opposite the NCAA tournament. I was not to say the Valspar wasn't good. Copperhead is not, you know, decent. It's not to say it was a garbage tournament. I have no interest in or any of that. I just think people are not attuned to golf. The ratings may say otherwise, which is fine. I don't that's not necessarily that's, you know, separate apart from the point. I just don't know. You need golf the week after the players championship going against the NCAA tournament. It's just sort of not good counter programming or worthwhile counter programming. Could be one we drop. Would you agree with that? Yeah. I think the issue going against the NTA tournament in particular. You can find reasons to skip every week. But with the tournament, there's nowhere to slide it in. Like, okay, we slide in here. Maybe we get a start and people keep watching because the tournament is so good. It is, hey, the tournament starts at 11 a.m. Eastern or whatever it starts at, you know, 9 a.m. here. It starts then and it's rolling through the rest of the day. And you're just like the way the tournament stacked is particularly on the weekend is like you just like switch from second half to second half. I watched the finish of this. I mean, the thing was the tournament was good. It always is good. Like, I think the bell's bar always has a pretty good finish. To me, it's like a better version of the travelers finish. Tougher golf course. A little bit more skills required to, to like you can't just fake your way around. But the finish always delivers. Like, they're always seemingly is like a bunch of guys with a chance in the mix. So I enjoyed that and like big numbers could happen coming down the stretch. I enjoyed a brand senator in the mix, you know, and, and, you know, tough Sunday for Stads. But I was really hoping he was going to get the win. So we got Keegan captain gate, heart two with Stadiker. I was going to say like the quickest way to get your game back is just to be named a captain and one of the team events to get back on tour. Stadiker, do you know what he finished at place wise where he finished? I mean, he was high for the lead with like a hour and a half to go. Yeah, he was tied. Yeah, precisely. T 18 tough just got real got real sideways there on the middle of the line. He talked about how he like gave it all away on the back line. It wasn't pretty on the front nine. He just was making everything. He got up it down over and over and over again. It's not like he turned the back nine and was like just like couldn't hit the ball anymore. He could hit the ball a day. He was five over like six holes on the back one from time for the lead to T 18. I there was someone I'm sorry. I someone tweeted in the middle of it. Like he had sort of like it just sucks to finish that when you're so close. Someone to be like did he actually think he was going to win this tournament with the under the impression. I was like yeah, he probably did. He's a golf pro. He's done a lot in his career and decent amount. But yeah, he didn't. I don't think have a realistic chance based on the way he was hitting it on Sunday. Fitz did Fitz did Fitz is dialed. Fitz is dialed in with the first major of the year quickly approaching. He was first in strokes game T to green second in approach. Shot 68 69 like a hard a set up hard golf course. He was kind of 68 69 all four rounds. 368s that is including one on Sunday with the birdie at the last to hold off Lipski. First time he's ever birdied that hole in the snake pit rolls in about a 15 footer. I think it was a very emotive fist pump for the generally stoic unless we're tying up pace of play Northwestern product. So he is rolling after the heartbreak last week at a player's championship gets back on the horse and wins at Valspar. Pretty pretty awesome for the PGA tour in terms of story standpoint. Yeah. The guy that finishes just falls just short at players at the players has a putt to make it you know to to get the playoff done and and just misses to get into the playoff and then the next week he's on the 18th hole with a putt to win and cash is it like that is as good of a set up as it as you can get. I had a question for you B.P. I think we got to give Mark Blackburn a lot of credit. Like number one in the world teacher. Number one to coach in the world. Yeah. I mean, this 50 turn around, 50 talked about it post a post round how like he's never had so much confidence with his iron play. Interesting. And I think like you start to look down maybe guys that are, he might not be undervalued now. But like if he's hitting irons at a elite level masters, potential masters guy that maybe there's not a ton to send on because his finishes aren't spectacular there. But if he's saying, if he's hitting his irons at such an elite level, maybe worth some shackles. The other thing I wanted to pull up here. Yeah. Or annual top 10. Six goes to six now. We've already had got our jump right. Go ahead. Throw it. We've got four jumpers in the top 10. Okay. Cameron Young's up to three. Did you see this PJ number three player in the world? I remember you. What a 10 they stretch for PJ. It's really, it's alarming. You know, sometimes you just get way too hot. Can't wait to see how it all comes crashing down at some point soon here. But it's been a good run. Number three. How about it? Okay. So he from 19th to third. Yep. You got 50 jump into six from 20 second. Mark how is eighth? TV with the back. There's been so much turnover in spots for through 10. There's a got up fifth, right? Wasn't he? He's now 10th. Oh, wow. I thought he was like fifth at one point this year, right? Am I crazy? It's wild. How much shuffling there's been interesting. So more. How a eighth and then got her up into the 10th spot. 28. So there's already been four players moving around. It's like everybody's moving, except for Roy and Scottie. Yeah. And they're so far out ahead of everybody else. I got a choke hold. You mentioned it fits pretty middleing at the masters. Like makes every cut, which, you know, that's I don't want to say it's easy to make the cut at the masters, but not the hardest cut to get over the line. He makes every cut. That's an achievement. And, but not a ton of contention, almost none. He has two top 10s there. But obviously that is the major storyline coming out of the last two weeks for him, as you talked about. He's going to be I hate the term. Like everybody uses the term dark horse or lawn shot to like that's not Scotty or Roy. And he should be among the top six seven favorites or six seven. I didn't do that. So the favorites, you know, realistically, I don't know what he's at. I'm checking it now. He's 25 to one right now, which sounds about right that there's maybe four guys ahead of them. Scotty, Roy, Ludwig, Bryson and Xander are ahead of them as far as I can tell and maybe Ron as well. So yeah, about six best thoughts. I think like the big thing is you got to look at the iron play. If he's really turned himself into a top 15 top 20 iron player. It's a whole new world for Fitsy there. You look go back to 2021, 2022 season. Use 48th. Obviously had a really good year that year. Second strokes game total that year. You know, he from there he had, you know, kind of didn't have great years. He was 116th of 2022, 2023. You know, if this guy has has turned himself into an elite iron player with his work with the number one coach in the world, then he could be a problem. This guy, I don't know, you just said this guy just thought I just jumped into the concert voice like this guy. Yeah, it could be a problem. I'll tell you what this guy, it feels with the heartbreak last week. He gets himself right in there. Yeah, I mean, God, he was lost. He had to play for a spot. Look, Donald made him play extra fall events on the DP World Tour to get a spot. He wins the DP World Tour Championship, not the race, but the last event of the year. And now he's, you know, kind of started slow-ish this year and cooking in the last month or so. So Fitz should be a, should be a likely pick to win the Masters. I mean, you think about, I don't know where he is with like strokes, gain points earned. Basically, I think it's the turnaround really started at Wells Fargo. Like the bottoming out was at Wells Fargo last year. Okay. Remember correctly. He was something like 80th in the world. Okay. Yeah. And you think about like where he's gotten to. So yeah, after, here, after Wells Fargo is 85th in the world and he had to T8 at the PGA. You think about the 10 month run he's been on. Good run. He's, he's, he's, he's in him. And you think about, okay, if I had told you that last year's Masters or last year's PGA that Maddie Fitz might be the third or fourth best, you know, pick. I mean, I guess you Bryson and, and Rom, you throw in there, obviously, those would be maybe these like the sixth or seventh pick of best player in the world. Yeah. Very good. There's a world where you could probably pick him before that. If you were saying like most reliable player in the world. Yeah. Gonna get you make a cut and get in contention. These, these way, way, way up there for the gambling. The thing I'm disappointed in. My, all my models said pick bat Fitzpatrick. But my stupid little one and done league has these dumb rules where I have to pick Brooks Capka. You did our, I would have, I would have been touting 15 all from the, from the towers. Oh, I went to set ahead and take Capka who had a respectful finish. It would have been a lot better if he hadn't doubled the 16 Saturday and Sunday. But I went with the, the Smother Boy who's definitely still a boy also on sideways with that pick, messed cut for the Smother Boy who's expecting his child. But yeah, Capka, decent finish for Capka. One more thing on Fitz though. I just want to add not only playing well, but also winning over the populist vote by just excoriating, putting people on blast for pace of play, including your fellow, I and I alum. I was going to apologize about. Okay. This was. This wasn't a light I behavior. I mean, he's out there. He's, he's, you know, pulling like Ben Crane Sabah, boy from Bratislava type maneuver is apparently hitting ahead of ADDC when he's the way, trying to push him away. And then it has a soliloquy on it in the post round champion's press conference. Like, you gotta be ready to hit. You're, you're, you're just not ready to play when it's your turn. And yeah, tough look for ADDC, which, you know, this is the problem that we talk about slow play. Generally, it's too slow. Guys are too slow. It takes too long to play, but names are never named really, except on, you know, the reverent podcasts like this one occasionally. This is a player putting a play partner out there. And that's what like public shaming, unfortunately, is what needs to occur to change course correct behavior. I think that's what's required. I don't know if it's going to happen with Tom Kim. He appears somewhat shameless. But, you know, we need, you know, people like Matt Fitz, who is at this point, you know, sort of a statesman of the game. He might have, he, he winds a little bit about too many other things, but he's, you know, a leader in the game. And yeah, it's certainly a piece of play. I thought it was admirable. He went out there and put it on blast. Yeah, I love, I think one of the things that I like about Fitz at this point is he is one of the people on tour that gives you the most in terms of quotes. He doesn't necessarily hold back that much on a tour of people that hold back so much. Now, we give a carrot to modern coaching. I'm going to, I'm going to take one away. I think that a lot of pace of plays issue are the modern coaches. And they're, uh, gung ho, you, you have to have a process to hit the ball. I mean, listen, if you were, if I were coaching, uh, my kid, I would teach them a routine. Like, there is like very a lot of data and, and you probably could, you know, put together, you know, good about a bike. If you can go through your team in the same exact process in time, you know, you are a, you're going to hit better shots. But these routines have gotten completely out of hand. They take so freaking long. And the fact is, why they won't start, they won't start their routine before the player in the shot and And the crowd is settled down. so that they can execute their routine in an exact number of seconds. But the caddy conversation cannot be part of the overarching routine. Talking through yardage and club, the routine, all these players, the pampered apps need to understand that you've got to have your club in your hand ready to hit the ball. So when the ball lands, the crowd claps, you're standing behind the ball, start timing your routine, time out your team from there. I've got my club, I know how far I'm hitting it, and I'm going to execute my routine from behind the ball there. I'm ready to hit like it's preposterous, how slow the modern golfer is, and this is in large part, if not wholly the coaches issue. This is all coach driven. Oh, you're taking the agency out of your line, I product. It's all the coaches fault. That's what I feel. Listen hearing. I'm not going to stand here. I'm not going to stand here and blindly support my fellow aligner. This is despicable behavior from ADDC. As the line I fan, I don't want a side swipe to many align fans. Our fan base can be pretty tough. I love that. Some self-reflection, self-admiring, they're online. They can be online. Yeah, I don't like reading. I don't think our fan base has very good takes just in general. I think they're delusional also, completely delusional. All these people complain about our basketball coach. It is like, what do you want? He's got more wins in the big 10 in the 2020s than any other program. What are we looking for? If he's not it, what is it? Top five. If it's a remarkably better than as soon as a Duke or Kansas or a big time job opens, he's gone. North Carolina is going to have a vacancy. Your coach is gone. Yeah. He seems like what you want. Stability and consistency and performance. But anyways, ADDC needs to be like, you should have to go into the principal's office after you're on national television doing what he was doing. He should be in Brian Rolab's office on Monday morning. The tour should send Jay's jet that he's probably flying to steamboat on. He should detour pick up ADDC in Tampa and he should be down in Brian Rolab's office and he should be up there with like a clicker. Maybe you bring in John Groot and two. You pay John Groot and be a yelling at him. The players should have to review the tape. Shouldn't this be delegated not to somebody else in competitions like Dennis the Tyler Dennis and Jason Gore. We got to watch out for the players. You don't understand how hard it was when I used to paint the line there. I felt the performance anxiety of a painting line. That's what got me to number two at the tour. Dennis the menace cannot be involved. Jason Gore, I'm starring. He made a career of just like all come on. Welding PGA tours, players hands on his way up the corporate ladder. That's been the qualification of like I can communicate with players. Oh, he's sounding bored. Yeah. They need a John Groot type that tears into him. When players get put on the clock, they should have to sit in the principal's office and review the tape with somebody who just yells at him. This is like in hockey when they have Brendan Chattahan who is now like the the the arbiter of all the suspensions who goes in there and just hardnoses everybody. You got to get like a former player who won't stick up for anybody and we'll just go at people. We're like. I wouldn't get him a private jet. I would just get him Southwest C class. Maybe get him to sit the cattle call at his C group. You know, everybody through the gates into your seat. Maybe get him a Southwest ticket. That's like the private jet seems too fancy. The kids won't know, but Brendan Chattahan, he was probably real problem. But the red wigs. He was like, yeah, one of my favorite Brendan's. I looked up to, I was like, oh, there is a Brendan. He's a NASKicker. He was a fellow Brendan I looked up to. You know what? If Brendan Chattahan was on that Canadian hockey team in the Olympics, they might have won. We got down differently. All right. That's for ADDC excursion. Valspar real quick on that. I also want them hearing from you. It's like less Cadi convos, but we want it for the concert. Right? Are we having the Cadi Conflos getting in the way of the broadcast thinks this is good content? I heard some pushback on chasing Sunday that there were a few agents that got in the paint and really sanitize that thing for a few of the individuals. They were our old fellow bud buddy. Got in the paint. Really sanitized. We know all about Buddy Ball. We know all the stuff on the scale of that. But still, anyways, Cadi Conflos holding a pace of play, but maybe good content. Who knows? Can we follow? Well, the Cadi conversation can happen while somebody else is going through their excursionating routine excruciating. Yeah, I know. I know. I know. Speaking of excruciating, last bit on Valspar. I have a few more bits. Is this like pro golf, you know, pro golfers, they kind of have been silenced. They don't have enough authority and weight and influence on the game of golf these days. You know, they've been silenced and stamped out pro golfers. They I want to give. They can't do anything. I want to give them their space here. Their perspective, I seems like, is that this is what's needed and not a rollback. This is how you can guard against the distance creep or distance explosion. Is Valspar is a copperhead in this brook. I saw Justin Thomas tweet Sunday night, 73 to 74 hundred yards. I think it was set up at 72. I think most of the week. There's 71, four par fives, over par cut and minus 11 going to be the winning score. In this brook always holds its own. I'm not suggesting he's saying this instead of rollback. It just seems reading between the lines. You know, you have tight-ish plane lanes, obviously with trees framing both sides. You had a small, very small greens. It was firm. Ish. You know, they had the drone out there. Look quite brown and stuff similar last week at Sawgrass. You have the kind of hoppy jumpy bermuda rough where that can be an obstacle to distance control. The pro golf perspective seems to be that this is how you get there. Over par cut, minus 11. So it's 72 hundred yards. I don't know that that should be applicable across the board, but this is their counter argument is how you get there. You see it year after year with the copperhead. They kind of hold it out. But it's a very unique setup, I would say, a unique set of challenges. I don't disagree that this is a great, unique stop on tour that's different. It's a different style of golf than most of the Florida swing while still being in Florida. I think the greater overarching point, and I think this is one thing that pro golfers and anti rollback people struggle with is there shouldn't be just one style of pro golf. This is the singular setup is not a good situation. You should want for you to have a wide range of setups in order to challenge pro golfers. And the fact that we've gotten to a place where only one type of setup is deemed challenge worthy is the issue. I love your tweet about the overinflated basketball. Yeah, overinflated basketballs in the tournament. Don't deflate them to regular levels. Just add moussier courts and softer backboards, bigger baskets to account for the ball that's bouncing too far now. Yeah, it's like, obviously, if you had 48 setups like Valspar, guys would lose their minds. Like, I can't hit my driver. My weapon, like, they of course would be losing their minds about that. You can't, you have to have multiple different varied setups. And so that's the issue. It's obsoleteing, you know, a certain percentage of that vary of that variety. So, um, how are you guys? as speed fans, how are you? How are you? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. T23 off the tee and seventh or 23rd and seventh off the tee and seventh and approach. He had a good approach week the week before. This is a good week. It's T 11 total finishes T 11 trending for a master's top 10. Probably who knows? Yeah, that's a good week for speed. I wouldn't say I'm like a giant speed fan, but yeah, you are. You're always defending him. Solid couple weeks of approach play for him. His driver still seems to be an issue or was at least at Sawgrass. Same on the Iron Play for Bruxy. Again, you mentioned you had to pick him, but I think he was top 10 at Sawgrass. And yeah, three at at MalSbar. So certainly is one to keep an eye on for the masters as well. He's rounding into form. What's the mule count, Peach? I assume that we don't need to get to specifics, but he sort of, uh, I the fall to 18th, he only made 100 grand. But it's, uh, put the players, I think is, is going to be the end of it. I mean, the players can't, can't make up 400,000. This might be the, the nail in the mule coffin for any debates is that you got two, two players for every one. He didn't make a day. Well, you can't even come close. Well, see, I mean, maybe one goes low at one of the Zurich or so. I don't know. You never know. And now you got here. You're, you're racking up seven figure totals. I don't think, but he can absolutely clip one with the way his, his iron play is, has been kind of trending. It's just, it's going to require him to be tidier in every other facet of the game. I don't want to say this is, you know, admirable, but interestingly enough, he doesn't seem to give a, what, give a F about it either. Like he is a, oh, am I losing my advantage here? Like, no, I'm still going to do what I do. You know, we obviously know he has a quirky equipment set up right with some antiquated, almost clubs at this point. Big revelation of that chasing Sunday was a, not big, but a revelation was, I think it was Akshay and Griner's sort of incredible, and credulity about him not carrying a yardage book of any kind. Just, you know, it doesn't dial it like he just, he's not necessarily worried about keeping up with all of that stuff. Whether it's off the tee, it's just speed training to have the advantage. He maybe once had in 2017, 18, 19. He's just a different kind of cat. It's probably, it's a little, there's a romanticism about it now this day and age, but he seems disinterested in changing anything about his approach, whether it's equipment, yardages, speed or whatever. And who knows, he's once majors might once more probably the way to do it, do what he feels comfortable. Other notes doesn't do stuff that changes his, his golf or DNA. Yeah. The thing with sun J is 25 years from now. So basically going through his PGA tour thing and look at like the finishes, the top 10s, and they're going to be like what a player this guy was. Yeah. I mean, into a certain extent, he's just been from like 20 to 40. For so many years, because he came out tour so young. Yeah. It does take a great amount of skill to be extremely above average. It's like my painter or something. Yeah. He's extremely above average. Yeah. But very much, very good golf has like this. They were talking about Marco Penji and about how he's, he's like just like on its way to start him. And he might, he might be, but we can't. Golf throws around star so Willie nilly. It's like insane. How will he nilly? They are about to start like they everybody would describe sun J as a star. And I'd be like, what has he done that's made him a star? There are five, five stars in golf. Maybe six. Maybe. Maybe I don't know. This is, it sounds disrespectful to people who are better at like 99.99% of the world that they're craft. But it's just a different, it's a, it's a different threshold that's come into view. Certainly in the last five, six years will live. I don't want to, I don't want to offend our producer here, but Cam Young's not a star. He's not yet. Yeah. Like the star for Bryson, Rory, Scotty, Rob. I don't know. I don't know what else. Bryce and DeChambo beats John Rom in a playoff with an incredible three wood from the mud. Left he got mud relief, but then you know, placed it just past the mud and ripped the three wood. I think it was 285 to 12 feet. Only needed a two putt to beat John Rom in the playoff. So he wins back to back in Singapore and then wins at live South Africa beating Rom in a playoff. The crushers I believe won the team event over the Southern guards, the host team of South Africans there in Steins City. A really interesting event. Bryce and then tears, Paul Casey and tears, but you know, if you're live, this is what you'd want. A great crowd dream event for live. Huge crowd. Bryce and Rom playoff. Crushers and South African locals, the Southern guard, Duke in it out in front of their home crowd. This was a great event for them. Now what does it mean? I want to give them their flowers. It's great. And you know what? The tour has this problem too. Exactly. But the tour already has like 60 years of infrastructure of like where they can have some duds. I've read a long lengthy money in sport analysis of their financials of making a signature model and how the money doesn't work except like the phoenix open is this behemoth. So they have a similar, not problem, but similar dynamic for them that they obviously have much more institutional control and financial guardrails. The issue is one great event in South Africa does not a league make. And how do you replicate this? It's obviously, you know, their emphasis would be on, we're not going for the American market necessarily. We're going global and we've demonstrated success in South Africa, Australia, credit to them. Saturday tickets for 2027 are already sold out in South Africa, just like tons of momentum. A good idea, a good event. How do you, can you, I don't want to say replicate this 12 times, but just getting a one good finish and great crowd pop to make a viable league going forward. I'm not sure. That's the harder next challenge. I suppose, but but a great event this week. To me, it feels like where they've hit is undervalued, golf countries or underserved. And there's two of them. South Africa and Australia, like the issue is you just, there's not, you can't keep going back to this barrel. It's not like we could just build the whole tour around this because the second that you, you know, like the second you try and do more than the markets not underserved. I do probably think Australia is big enough that they can do two events there, but then you're cutting across like, are you doing this for television? Are you doing this for on site experience? And I wouldn't say that they're completely mutually exclusive, but they are a little bit mutually exclusive. Like this was an incredible finishing event. The ratings for an American audience where we know like they will push back and you need to be global, but like that drives the bus financially. We'll be poultry compared to a Valspar, which you might think is absolutely not nearly as interesting and what they got in South Africa. It just won't. Yeah, that's the piece here is like, yeah, this could be a great event, but did it move a move them closer to not just being a financial subsidy of the Saudi Arabian government? No. Like nothing they've done all year has moved them closer to not being just a fine a subsidy of Saudi Arabia trying to improve his global image. Yeah, I mean, it speaks to our prior discussion about stars, like how about like, you got all the money in the world, you got all the success in the world, you have to have this sort of, at this point, institutional build up that we see with like certainly with the masters. And the PGA tour just has that advantage. Like you could put Joe Shmo on CBS on Sunday afternoon at 6 p.m. and it's going to do it like right now that's the nature of the product. Maybe the live is winning a younger audience and that will slip in, you know, 20 years from now 30 years to the have the appetite to continue live at what it is for that amount of time for another 10 years. Maybe I don't know. It's a harder challenge, but I can't do anything but applaud the effort in South Africa, you know, and go ahead. Can we point out going to 72 holes to be seems like it's helping their big names win more in 10 more. Yeah. Yep. So impacting Waco maybe to Neiman, maybe a little bit, but yes, fewer Neiman hits and now he's a star. He's one of their stars. But yeah, you're seeing a lot of, a lot of Bryson here recently as they go global. I think that like a real serious golf conversation, this is going to be the best form that we've ever seen, Bryson coming into Augusta National. And it's hard to square how you value these win live wins, whatever. But in the last three or four years, I don't think he's finished in the top three of any event in the lead up to the Masters like from their start to the Masters on a quick scan. So this winning two in a row leading in the Masters, what a dream start to the Masters. So the year for somebody that like, I think it was pretty clearly, clearly trying, you know, trying to win majors and, you know, he's been in the mix of the Masters obviously was in the final group last year and was squarely in the mix the year before. Interesting results for him coming in and obviously John Rom has had a really nice run here leading into the Masters as well. I think they need to perform at some of these majors this year. They're big guns or even their second tier guys. So they're off until the second tier guy is going to be in the major. I mean, like, hadn't I don't know if that's disrespectful to call him second tier, but I ramen Bryson, I think are sort of in their own class. Yeah, they're off until Mexico City the week after the major, the Masters. So Bryson playing well also has some sort of personal difficulty or struggle or emotional issue going on. He was very emotional after the round both on the green in press conference, but we'll not allude to what it was. We'll not talk about it, but it must be acknowledged. Hope everything's okay there. He was emotional. Paul Casey also in tears crying on the 18th green about how great South Africa was in the southern guards. Charles and Gracie as he called them and Burmese said it's the best live event they've ever had. Put the gauntlet down for Australia. I don't know, you know, we saw him emotional whistling straight since everybody was getting emotional sort of jump on that bandwagon there, but clearly moved by the scenes in South Africa. The crushers were hope everything's all right with Bryson. I don't know what's going on there. He doesn't want to talk about it, but hopefully over there. they're all right, but he isn't good for him. The golf is in good form going to the masters. John Romell or Unlive is dropping his appeal of DP World Tour's fines that he's been contesting, but will not pay the fines. So seems like he's still not eligible for the DP World Tour and the Ryder Cup is in serious doubt. He said, "Just lower to four events." This was Sean Zock, I believe, who was on the ground in South Africa, reporting "lower to four events," like the minimum says, and I'll sign tonight. They haven't agreed to that. I just refuse to play in six events. I don't want you, and that's not the rule. Say, so not appealing anymore, but also not paying his fines, which sort of leaves the staredown still in the fold. This is a staredown of the year. I guess. I mean, or next year, when really push comes to shove, "Hon, is he going to be in a dare-manor?" I assume the fines continue to accrue or they halt it. I think they do accrue. I think he wants, yeah, he's going to play the Spanish open, he wants to play. So all the others have agreed, no more fines. So they're not getting fine for playing live events. It's interesting. I saw James Corrigan, he's not in the Ryder Cup, he's not playing. They're getting pretty declarative here, what's still 18 months to go until the Ryder Cup. It feels like more time passes, the more dug-in they are getting. Well, that's the way these things work. Everybody starts to feel more and more wronged, and this is how lawsuits get contentious. Yeah. Or Michael Parsons ends up on the packers, things like that. As you dig in, sometimes it just doesn't resolve itself. In the way you'd like, on the LPJ, Huchukim wins at Sharon Heights, the founders cup. A lot of positive reaction to this, great broadcast, great course, bells and whistles, Nelly Corda in the mix. A lot of shaky putting coming down the stretch between Kim and Corda, even herself. Kim thought, looked like she would cruise easily at Sharon Heights, but needed to kind of eat it out there over the last two holes. Nelly did not put extremely well over the last four or five holes for her. Huchukim's second LPJ win, Ben Huntour for like 12 years, Ben a while, but gets her second win. This was a good event. It was a prime time viewing. They had the drone out. It was pretty firm and fast. Let the women's sort of skills show on approach shots particularly. I don't know that it will translate into any real ratings like the Valspar going against the NCEO, the Tournament or others, but I don't know if this was the week to do it is what I would say, but certainly a dramatic improvement over prior recent weeks, certainly in Asia, but prior iterations of the founders. I think the reality of women's golf is like, there's no right or wrong weeks. What they have to do is build consistency of high level tournaments and broadcasts. This is week one. Go from there and it's like, can you stack? Can we go from five great tournaments broadcasts a year this year or whatever you deem the number two to eight to 12? That's the way you're going to incrementally grow the bucket. Nobody wants to hear that there's no silver bullet. It's just consistently providing good product, which they have not done. I can't believe I'm uneironically quoting Paul Azinger now in my old age, but control the controllables. You can control where you play. You can control how the course is set up. You control when you play and they have pushed the broadcast to be better and they're a big driver of that instead of letting the broadcast decide for itself. We don't want this. We demand this. We'll pay for this, that or the other. Control what you can control. They haven't always done that. They're certainly making Sharon Heights. The founders was an instance of really pushing all those. I don't know what it's called peripheral, but issues that they can immediately affect. It was nice. It was dry and firm. One amusement I did have. They always put the founders. They bring them out historically for this event. Founders like Greenside or around the course. I was a little worried. They were going to take out a founder. They had a left pin. They had the founder stage essentially on the green. I know there's a runoff area there. It was like a little worried. A while overcooked shot could go right into the founders. It was precarious in my opinion. I don't know what the insurance policy was on that, but they're sitting there and they're at a rendezvous chairs or whatever they are. Essentially on the green and a left pin. That amused me there on the 18th of the founders cup. A positive event on the LPGA. They're now back in America. Yeah. One of them could get stage steel there. Don't. Please know. No stage steel at the champs tour. PJ, you want to come in? Who won the champs tour? Steven Alker. Steven Alker owns the Colaguard. Yeah. And then he got, like, yeah, he's going to get the desert. So he missed, he's off the course. He's in the desert on his pretty steep embankment hits his swing and then just goes belly first. Yeah, he just he just got the hill puts his hands up doesn't even try to fight it just goes the caddy goes like tumbling down the hill and the volunteers playing partner. He just disappears on his belly sliding into the cactus and whatever else an incredible seed from the champions tour. Don't let anybody tell you these guys aren't athletes. It was like speed that Whistley straights when he was on that you know embankment and then he stayed on his feet right that kind of thing. Congrats to John Dealy for another viral moment. On the European tour the Hanan classic over admission hills Jordan Gumber the American wins beats Jorge Campio in a back and forth battle wins of course Gumber you'll recall he was 127 to get his card jumps from 127 to 100 in Korea last year to get his card with a whole out eagle from the fairway like one of the all time get across the line save your card moments with a whole out eagle on his last hole and gets his card then we we have him here a matter of months later winning in China the Hanan classic Jordan Gumber the American congrats to him for getting across the line there did get a report on round two in carts with the amateurs five hours 40 minutes in round two with the amateurs in carts driving amidst the volcanic rock apparently this was a group that was off early among the earliest groups and it took five hours and 40 minutes with the amateurs a lot of apparently discrepancies and scoring among the amateurs when they were trying to tally them up you know wealthy Chinese businessmen this and that they're like oh I had a birdie I had a bogey at a bird a lot of discrepancies going down on the on the am side of the non classic of now they're off to dlf where they won't be in carts but it might be five hours and 40 minutes there but then we'll talk about that on Wednesday dlf all the apparently ton of visa issues getting for people from China the the dlf caddies players and all that but we'll get we'll get on to that on Wednesday um congrats to Gumber there uh often running on news I want to talk about this money in sport article but I think we'll do that Wednesday a good deep dive analysis on some of the financials from tournaments uh their conclusions the math doesn't work the tour is subsidizing too much of the purses uh there's too many you know tournaments that aren't making revenue they're gonna need a substantial sponsor uh commitment or growth to make a bunch of signature events that roll ups out line we can talk about it I would push back on some of that what would you push back with this is their analysis I would push back if you view that the the tour tournament golf that pga tour enterprises the tour golf is the only business function of pga tour enterprises and I would push back and say in a way that the pga tour is your is your marketing platform for everything else you can do is at this i's okay and thus it's a little bit of a loss leader okay so they're they're okay with just I just I think that they're they're viewing this strictly in way too narrow of a scope of what's it's all of understanding the financial success and how you view the overarching organization okay I think it's not the overarching opportunity of the pga tour and I think that is to me the biggest issue with this article is not they don't they don't actually understand like having a big vision for the business and what a big vision could deliver by subsidizing a really great television product so that to me would be my pushback on that article cliff notes push I think the the analysis was confined to was too narrow was confined to what do these events work as you know on their own as financial entities you know the math but the conclusion which you're pushing back on is the math doesn't work that's what you're quibbling with well yeah the conclusion the math doesn't work is like if you think that the pga tours business is combined strictly to pga tour golf which there's yeah you could say that but then yeah I would say that you have a really small vision and you should be in an accounting department their suggestion is strategic sports group won't have an appetite for losing you know or subsidizing you know 50% of purse funds or losing money on this event that event whether it's a signature event that doesn't get a maybe a corporate sponsor that's you know covering most of the bill and they have to that that was their conclusion all right we'll talk more in doubt there was some good nuggets in there about rbc and some of these other tournaments sort of yeah and hold not the cup will change as you know like bright tuck and usga news pushback rollback pushback to 2030 I think we all kind of knew this was coming sadly the gobbling gook that signal that was quote proposed change to a single date implementation of the updated test conditions for the overall distance standard to January 30 2030 so we sort of got a single this was coming but cool cool just another two years no become a political football so what's with the far reaching impacts it's time to retire courses yeah just pebble in that financial analysis pebble doing quite well maybe just get it out get it off the tour no majors no us opens at pebble all right that does it for this Monday live edition of the shotgun start we'll be back with you on Wednesday it's dlf week got Houston open down on the pga tour we'll talk about that money in sport analysis and we will get back with you on Wednesday talk to you then
