79. Brick Updates, The Enhanced Games, and Coach/Influencer Transparency

In this episode of "Lifting, Running, and Living," hosts Kelly and JK share updates on their use of The Brick, a device that blocks distracting apps, praising its scheduling features and impact on reducing mindless phone use. JK also announces a podcast overhaul: "Help Me Understand" will return to broad topics, while a new fitness-focused show, "Make Fitness Make Sense," launches in July. The main discussion centers on the Enhanced Games, a controversial event allowing performance-enhancing drugs under medical supervision, which the hosts criticize for normalizing risky drug use and question its validity, noting that clean athletes won and records aren't officially recognized. They then explore the ethics of disclosure for coaches and influencers who use substances like TRT, GLP-1s, or PEDs while selling fitness advice. Kelly initially downplays the need for disclosure if a coach's expertise is proven, but later agrees that hiding such use, especially when promoting results, is deceptive, citing an influencer who concealed GLP-1 use while pushing macro counting. The hosts emphasize that transparency matters for trust, especially since audiences often link visible results to advice. They recommend that followers evaluate influencers through long-form content and consistency over time to gauge authenticity, concluding that while disclosure isn't legally required, it's ethically important to maintain credibility.

He did it again. Now that we expect it, we can. Yeah, I know. All right. What is going on, everybody? Welcome back to Lifting, Running, and Living with your favorite podcasters, Kelly. Hello. Hey, and JK, that's me. Yeah. You know, getting pretty wild and crazy over here. All right. We're kicking off episode number 79. Our fitness related topic today is going to be discussing coaches and influencers who may be consuming particular products to help them out with performance, body composition, overall results. How much of that should be disclosed? How much do you slash we care? We're going to be chopping that up as far as our fitness related topic today. But before we get into that, let's do some living and maybe, maybe even some training updates. We'll see how it rolls. I don't think either of us has training updates today. Yeah, but there's always like what we put down and then sometimes where we go. So that being said, yeah, you know, you know how we go, how we roll. Yeah. Kelly, what you got going on? Um, I only have one update I want to talk about. It's not a training update. And like you already know, it is attached to your update. We're going to talk more about the brick. We are not sponsored, though. We would accept. Um, we both love it, but I've been trying out the, for you go any further for anybody who might be tuning in for the first time and has no idea what the brick is. Would you like to give a quick summary of what it is? Okay. So brick is a physical product. It's a tiny little square with a magnet on the back of it. And you can set it to block certain apps and websites on your phone so that when your phone is quote unquote bricked, you can't access those. Um, and in order to access them again, you need to physically tap your phone against the physical brick. Yeah. Similar to if you were tapping something for paying with your phone, Apple pay, Android pay, that sort of a thing. So yeah. All right, cool. Yeah. All right. So I just wanted to do that for the folks who might not remember or might not know. Yeah. So when I first got the brick, I've had it for over a month, I think at this point. Yeah. Cause I got it before my Chicago trip was end of April. So I probably had it for six weeks now. Um, and my primary mode was just blocking Instagram threads, Tik TOK and Reddit. That's like my always on brick mode. And then if I want to go on any of those, obviously on brick, but I've been trying out the schedule feature and I have another mode where basically I block everything except like messages, photos, calendar, wait, calendar might be blocked. Um, apps that like aren't going to hook you blocking your calendars next level. I can't remember if I have a calendar blocked, um, but this one essentially that sounds like pretty much blocking everything except like the utilities stuff, like your settings and yeah. Podcasts and Spotify are out. Um, unblocked. Okay. Okay. Gotcha. Yeah. Um, the essentials, the, the essentials. Yeah. Uh, there's a couple more. I don't remember all of them off the top of my head. New York times games, obviously. Um, which will make sense in a second, but this mode I have set to go on every day at 8 PM and it will go until 6 AM the next day. So, um, I wanted to test it out to see if that would help me go to bed a little earlier. Um, and I need the games unblocked because on the days that I'm awake before 6 AM, I need to be able to play my games. That's why that's important. Um, need, well, it's only one day a week that I'm up and on my phone before that. Gotcha. The track day. I'm just here to be petty. That's all. I know. Yeah. But I kind of, I really like it. It, uh, there have been a couple of nights where it's past 8 PM and I try to do something and then I'm reminded that my phone is bricked. Uh, but at that point, like, I don't want to walk over to the fridge and unbrick it. Yeah. So you said 8 PM to 6 AM. Yeah. Okay. How did you pick 8 PM? Uh, well, my phone goes into do not disturb at like eight 30, sometimes eight 15. Okay. Um, we talked about this a long time ago. It's like based on when my alarm is set. Mm hmm. Uh, but I've wanted to start getting into bed a little earlier. Yeah. That hasn't really happened yet, but I have successfully been off my phone like after 8 PM. Okay. Yeah. I am, uh, very into a book right now. So even if I am getting in bed a little earlier, I have been staying up later, which is not really my goal with getting in bed earlier. Yeah. But yeah, it's the schedule's really nice. Cause I don't have to remember to like, switch my phone. I don't have to remember to like, switch my phone. I don't have to remember modes to brick it. And then at 6 AM it switches back to my like no socials default mode until I decide I want to unlock it. Okay. So when your, when that schedule ends, it switches just to a different bricked mode. It doesn't unbrick. Okay. Cause I haven't set a schedule yet. Do you have the option of at a certain time it just unbricks? Okay. Gotcha. Good to know. Yes. So I basically have my, um, I call it the do not disturb mode that blocks, a lot of things. I have that set 8 PM to 6 AM. And then I have my no socials mode set from 6 AM to 8 PM. Or I think it might be 6 AM until I unbrick, but there is an option. You can set it for like a certain time, or you can like have it started a certain time until you want to unbrick it. Or I think there's an option where you can have it ended a certain time. Yeah. It's very flexible, but that's why I was mentioning to you, you might want to try that out. I'll get to that in my update. Yeah. Whenever. Yeah. Okay. But okay. So you're still, still, uh, still a fan. Oh yeah. I love it. Yeah. I agree. Okay. Yeah. Like I've told you, I just need something to brick my laptop. Yeah. Cause the workaround is getting on the big screen. That's fair. Yeah. That's fair. That's fair. Um, okay. Do you want me to go with mine? Yeah. That's all I got this week. Okay. Well, my brick update, we're about to start renaming these brick updates for folks. Just so folks know we did independently decide what our updates were going to be. So it just so happens that each of us, um, is doing this. And Kelly was the trailblazer out of the two of us. I decided to give it a shot after she used it. This is like your third week, fourth week. Third week. Yeah. Probably my second full week. Cause I got it like on a Wednesday or something. Anyways. Uh, so for myself, yeah, it's still, um, I'm still a fan, uh, specifically for reasons that I mentioned when I first got it in, uh, our previous podcast episode. I think that it has taken, it's taken the things that I've learned are, um, that I've learned or engineered to keep you engaged in something and it's spun it in a positive way. So things like gamification, um, kind of minimalist look the countdown clock or the count up by clock, I guess it would be being able to have like streaks of how many days in a row can I get to 15 hours bricked or, you know, whatever it might be. So it's done those things really well. So I'm still a big fan for those reasons. Um, also the ongoing or the periodic emails that they will send with different tips. And one of the tips that was in the email, I'm sure I have a feeling that it's um, oh, what is the word? It's not a rhythm, but it's where, you know, a journey. Yeah. No workflow. Yeah. Workflow. There we go. So, uh, one of the emails that I got was a tip to use brick modes, like set particular brick modes as your default. So brick it as your default, not just when you're looking to, uh, limit distractions. So for example, it wouldn't be like, okay, I'm just going to have it unbricked the majority of the time. And then when I need to get some work done, I'll go ahead and brick it so that there's no social media. It would be similar to what you talked about where, Hey, here's my everyday mode. My everyday mode is to have Facebook, Instagram blocked, but threads open. And then my anti-social mode. Yeah, I do love me some threads. Um, my anti-social mode, just also adds Instagram to that. So that's what I've got so far. And I'm primarily talking about, about my my main personal phone the phone that I call my coaching phone which is the second phone that I have that one pretty much stays bricked almost all the time and the only apps that are available on there are a couple that I use for my in-person retail job and then Spotify like Spotify messages and I think camera I think I added CapCut to have that available yeah so yeah so that's what's going on there so yeah that's that's been that's been cool to try and look at having a mode that's more of a default and what I've noticed actually is even for even times where I've not had it bricked and had things had like Instagram still available to use I just don't I don't feel this like need to check it for no reason basically now I will I have found that I've just now moved to checking checking um or going on Instagram if I'm just looking to scroll I'll get on my laptop or my desktop yeah that's what I do for the most yeah for the most part now what I was sharing with Kelly and this will be the the other part of my my brick update and then I've got one other update and then we'll roll into the topic is that uh so in the morning I will I typically for those who who don't follow me on just about every morning on threads I just posted I'm thankful to see another day pretty much every morning within probably about five minutes or so of waking up so I will unbrick it from the anti-social mode and then post my thing on threads and then I'll put it into my everyday mode which is Facebook Instagram blocked threads is open so go and usually I go to work out whether that's cardio or lift whatever it might be and my thought is okay after I'm done with my workout if I took any videos from my workout then I'll pop on Instagram I'll post those in my stories so unbrick it post it in my stories and then brick it back again yeah what's been happening recently though this has happened three now maybe four times at this point is after I'm done with the gym I will get involved in doing a couple of other projects before going to my in-person job so I won't unbrick it to post anything in my stories and my intention is to post it in my stories and I'll post it in my stories and I'll post it in my stories okay well I'll just throw it in my backpack and I'll bring it with me to work and when I take a break I'll post in my stories from there from a because because from a coaching standpoint uh an influencer standpoint whatever standpoint you want to whatever umbrella you want to put me under I do like to stay active in my stories with staying present yeah and man okay three or four times I forgot to throw the thing in my bag yeah and then I'll be at work and then I'm taking a lunch and I'm like okay yeah let me go ahead and do this now and it's like oh snap I forgot and I'm so stubborn that I don't want to use one of the emergency unbricks no there's only five yeah you get five emergency unbricks where you can uh unbrick it without having to go tap the device mine is on my fridge also so you can do that without having to tap the device and once you use the five you can email them and they'll reload more on there right you didn't tell me that yeah so you can have them reload more but I'm just really stubborn right now and I'm like do I really need to do this and so then yeah basically I'll have like 15 things posted my story at like 8 45 p.m it's basically how it goes so it's just basically a whole dump of the day it's like those people who go on vacation and then after yeah they do the big photo dump yeah that's what my stories are now turning into or in the instance of last night go to I go to the gym I go to work I went to we had like a city council uh meeting so I went to go attend that and then by the time I got home ate dinner I was like I'm not I'm not posting anything I'm going to bed man I'm tired so yeah there we are and I did the same thing today even though today I didn't go to my in-person job but I at least I got sidetracked but I remembered to go in there so that's all overall it is doing exactly what I wanted it to do which was to first bring more awareness to just mindless checking phone checking yeah opening apps just for no no good reason no apparent reason at all I wanted to one get more awareness around it and two slow it down and so far I have I don't know what I haven't specifically looked at like screen time and you know pick up the phone and I haven't specifically looked at like screen time and you know pick up the phone and I haven't specifically looked at like screen time and you know pick up and all that stuff I just know that I've I've not spent as much time on there so yeah I plan to stay a fan still for now so we'll see in the next couple weeks yeah what goes on there all right and then the last thing I've got for updates I have let me see what since 2020 I have had a podcast called help me understand and that podcast initially started as primarily focused on gaining respect and context behind the things that we experience in everyday life whether it had to do with health and fitness parenting politics overall just culture random things I mean my topics when they when I say they were wide all over the place they were all over the place whether it was from guests that were on to just things that I would talk about and just my opinions and things like that and over the past I'd say about year to year and a half slowly but surely I really steered the majority of the of the episodes towards fitness because I was finding that I wasn't talking about fitness in anywhere near the level of interest that I have in fitness yeah so what I found is that episodes had swung so far to the fitness side that it was becoming for me I was having this internal battle of well I've now done three or four episodes in a row that are all related to fitness and now I want to talk about for example a meeting that I went to to learn a bit more about data centers and that's going to be kind of a weird one right after talking about what men should know about perimenopause yeah so with that what's going to happen is in July help me understand is going to for lack of a better way to put it like relaunch and return to its roots where it's a free-for-all being able to talk about again perspective and context behind the things that we experience in everyday life and then I'll be starting a new solo podcast however there will be conversations also that one's going to be called make fitness make sense and that is going to start in July so if you are someone who's interested in staying connected with me specifically for things that are fitness related I'm still going to be here and I'm going to be talking about also I'll be starting make fitness make sense if you are interested in hearing more about my random things that I like to talk about and I am telling you I am all over the place like those Friday fours would be all over the place oh yeah the Friday fours yeah talk about random things all the time uh then help me understand we'll be returning to that that'll all be in July until then I think it's actually June 30th but I talk about a little bit on today's got released so stay tuned for make fitness make sense because that's going to be that's going to be the new pod it's exciting and yeah help me understand I already of course I had to reach out to joy so I already I'm going to have joy come on and we are going to talk about um growing up in a heavily Mormon environment oh that'll be interesting yeah so you know of course I'm going to swing in a little bit of the secret lives of Mormon wives swing totally yeah you gotta um so yeah that's why you know why not start off with just something spicy yeah really it's going to be um one of the things that will likely come up in that conversation is the I guess I say broader topic of growing up in a household or growing up in an area um that's heavily influenced by structured organized religion yeah and just the nuances of that because I can relate to that I didn't grow up in a Mormon household or a Mormon area at all um but I grew up in a very religious household and a lot of the things that I still stand on this today are rooted in things that I learned growing up so I don't know be a good conversation all right so that's yeah those are the updates um that I have nice cool yeah all right all right well let's get into um let's get into um the topic all right so as I mentioned or teased up at the top overall topic that we're riffing on today is uh coaches and influencers that take products for performance body composition overall results and we're talking pretty much right in the gamut here we're talking PEDs we're talking hormone replacement therapy we're talking peptides we're talking fat burners um and perhaps one of the things we'll actually talk about is you know do you put certain things in certain categories or do you put certain things in certain categories or do you put certain things in certain categories or you know how do how do each of us kind of look at this and really the a big part of the conversation is how much do you expect to know As a person who either follows that particular person, maybe even hires or is considering hiring people, how much should be disclosed? And where the inspiration for this came from was from the recent Enhanced Games. So the Enhanced Games, I got a little summary here from Tisha, my great assistant. So we'll give some bullet-pointed rundown on the Enhanced Games. You can let me know what your thoughts were on that. So if you are not aware, folks, they just happened back on May 24th, and it was the Enhanced Games, that's what they were called, was an Olympic-style competition that was built around allowing athletes to use performance-enhancing substances under medical supervision instead of banning them. And they just held this. So on May 24th, and it was in Las Vegas, this was a privately-backed event, and it's tied to a broader enhancement model. So from public reporting, it was connecting the project to backers that included some controversial folks. Peter Thiel, Christian Angermeyer, Balaji Srinivasan, and Donald Trump Jr.'s 1789 Capitol. And then Reuters also reported that Enhanced, that's actually the name of a company, Enhanced claimed about $32 million in contracted sponsorships after the event itself. Something that I did hear on a podcast, and I can't remember which place did this podcast, I don't remember if it was an NPR one or this one called Today Explained, I can't remember. But one of the things that they mentioned is that there were certain things I think peptides were not part of. What they allowed. Like there were actually, even though the performance enhancing substances were allowed, it wasn't like a free-for-all. Like if somebody claimed that cocaine was, you couldn't do that. No, there were restrictions of some sort. And I would not be shocked if Enhanced, which is, I'm going to put them under the pharmaceutical company. They do sell things. I would not be shocked if you had to be utilizing. Something that they had access to. I would not be shocked. They do sell peptides. I think I heard. Okay. I mean, who doesn't? I didn't dive in too far because I don't really care about Enhanced games. Okay. Well, the sports that were included were swimming, track, weightlifting, and a strongman style deadlift event. The organizers framed it as more of a transparent version of elite sport. So instead of performing. Or pretending that those PEDs don't exist. They wanted to openly test what they're calling quote unquote human potential with medical oversight. Something that should be mentioned is that with medical oversight doesn't inherently mean that something is safer. No, it just means that there's doctors and, or experts of some various certifications we shall say involved in what's going on, but it does not. It does not automatically mean safer PS. Yeah. Let's see. So criticism critics argue that it normalizes risky drug use. It turns enhancement into entertainment and it could influence younger or everyday athletes to chase performance through drugs instead of training recovery and long-term health. Rules wise, the athletes were allowed to use substances that are banned by anti-doping organizations. So reported protocols included testosterone. Testosterone, testosterone, esters, HGH, and stimulants. One other thing I'll mention, not everybody that competed was on something. There were a couple of folks. I know there was one track and field athlete. I think it might've been the guy who ran the 100 who actually won it. A lot of clean athletes won. Yeah. Okay. So there were definitely clean, like tested clean athletes who participated and, uh, I believe there might've been a swimmer who. Participated. Yeah, there was. And stated that he did not want to take anything because he also wanted to stay eligible for. Yeah. Sponsored Fred, Fred Curley is the a hundred meter runner. He wants to run an LA 2028. Okay, perfect. So you had a mix of those, um, swimming also allowed the band polyurethane style super suits. So the performances are not recognized by our official governing bodies, which is worth mentioning because there was a Greek. Swimmer who swam 20.81 seconds in the men's 50 meter freestyle, which is faster than the official world record, but it does not officially count because of the rules around drug use and the equipment. So wore a band suit and likely took a band substance. So yes, they beat the world record, but it doesn't account as an official breaking of the world record. Uh, last thing, a couple of things event reportedly had a 20. $25 million total prize pool with 250,000 for first place in an individual events. And then you got a million dollar bonus for breaking certain world record marks. So WADA, um, which is the drug enforcement agency has called the concept dangerous and irresponsible and traditional government bodies do not recognize the performances because they fall outside normal anti-doping rules. All right. So Kelly thoughts on the enhanced games. Did you watch any? No, cause I don't want to support it, but it does bring me great pleasure that a lot of clean athletes won and their only good result was the one that you stated in the swim. Uh, and where they used a band suit. Yeah. I would guess it has more to do with the band suit than the drugs, but I didn't see what the, what the next closest person or anything like that. I don't know. Yeah. I don't know either. I think they like barely broke. That were technically, they didn't break the record, but yeah, it wasn't like a full second under the existing. I don't think I, for one, didn't, didn't watch a single second. Yeah. I didn't watch, um, the track and field world has been up in arms since this was announced because Fred Curley has been saying he's been doing it for a while. Like he said he was going to do the enhanced games. Oh, he committed fairly early. Yeah. Um, and then he kept saying he was going to break a world record, which, uh, Usain Bolt has the world record in the hundred and no one's really come close since him yet. Um, I have mixed feelings about it. Um, I think so like for Fred, it's a huge payday. Like you don't get $250,000 for winning any track and field event ever. Um, however, I do wonder if that payout is worth the long-term questioning of his reputation. He's going to withstand, he says he's clean, but like you had participated in the enhanced games and like, why would people think you're clean kind of thing? You know, did he get tested though before he competed? A lot of people that have gotten tested are not clean in the world of running. Um, I don't know what their testing policies were, but even if he was clean, like at the event, that doesn't mean he was clean all throughout training. You know, from my understanding with, with WADA, they can test you like anytime, any place, anywhere for the most part they can, but the resources are very limited. So I, they don't test as much as they should. Um, and you. You do get three strikes for like a missed test before you're like banned, banned. So like if you think you might get a negative result or you forget to like update your whereabouts, you can miss two before the third one is like when you're banned for like a whereabouts failure. Um, so you're thinking his legacy might be tainted somewhat here. Yeah. And he, I don't want to misspeak, but I'm pretty sure he is serving a ban or he. He was. Oh. Yeah. Cause I need to look this up. Uh, cause I. That adds another wrinkle. Yeah. Cause I thought I remembered. Okay. Yeah. He got a two year ban for missing his drug tests, which then no one can say like definitively if he's on drugs or not. Right. Cause there were no tests. Um, but he did get a two year ban, which means he missed three tests. Um, and his legacy was already been tainted then. I remember when enhanced games was announced, people were like, Oh, he must've been doping. And that's why he missed his test. Cause he's going to the enhanced games now. But then he like switched up and was like, I'm running the enhanced games clean. And then I'm like, why'd you do all that marketing saying you're going to run a world record when you've been running the hundred for years and you haven't broken the world record clean. You know? Okay, yeah, it sounds like he, yeah, I don't know. anyway uh i do have mixed feelings like if the enhanced games is gonna be a thing i kind of feel like the people participating should be enhanced okay like it should only be enhanced people yeah only be people that are on peds yeah like if we want enhanced games to be a thing which to be clear i personally don't want it to be a thing but yeah like allowing clean and doping athletes to i guess like how does that differ than normal then like obviously doping athletes aren't like allowed to right race against clean athletes but until they're caught they are considered a clean athlete and we know there is doping in professional sports they're just like we can't catch them all yet you know yeah i guess i just well one i i have zero interest in watching this event yeah because even my my interest in the olympics has waned heavily over the years yeah big time because my introduction to the olympics was back when it was like flojo and yeah carl lewis that ben like ben johnson um jackie joiner cursey like that that's the era for me that i was introduced to it and a big part of that i believe was because also i was living in singapore and malaysia at the time so i was living in southeast asia so there was a there was more of this feeling of like usa pride especially because they were black athletes and i was living in a country where not only were americans out of the ordinary black americans they're literally like we all knew each other at school yeah there were like nine of us yeah so when we saw like flojo and and you know like gee i i remember like i had a massive crush on ford's massive crush so that was my introduction to the olympics and then over the years just over time it's just started to wane from that because i think i started on just such a high with it that now i i mean i watched the olympics you know we talked events like i'll watch the highlights and then some of the big events and i like some of the personalities now but when it comes to like this particular event i have i mean when i say no interest i mean none none whatsoever that's why the bigger part of this conversation is not going to be actually about the enhanced games i do think about though i have an interest in bodybuilding and bikini competitions and it's a known thing that to get to a certain level once you go like you just assume that anybody who's pro is using something and also maybe i have more of an interest in that world just because i'm more involved in that in i'm not going to say in that sport yeah i'm more involved in activities related to that sport versus i'm not a runner i'm not a track runner yeah um i'm not a swimmer yeah yeah like those are two things that i'm more involved in that i don't do a ton like swimming way like i hate swimming more than i hate running yeah we can agree on that yeah so yeah i just don't have a vested interest in it so i don't know the only other thing i'll say about the enhanced games is i think it's pretty naive to think that i can't remember when they announced this it feels like it wasn't that long ago i feel like it's pretty naive to think that someone granted a lot of people don't think that the people that participated are like former pro athletes um anyway my original sentence i can't seem to complete i think it's a little naive to think that uh like less than a year of banned drug usage and training will break world records um especially like and this is not an original thought i saw it point out online so i just want to call that out but like the 100 meters isn't just you know like your aerobic fitness or like something that a drug will impact it's like a lot of technique and practice and running against uh a faster field will push you to be faster you know yeah um and i feel like that could be said about any sport though where where drugs are a part of it it's like when you really do the activity you understand that it's not the end-all be-all same thing for bikini and bodybuilding yeah i think that it'd make more sense if these people like if they got noah lyles maybe to participate in the enhanced games because he's like one of the fastest 100 meter runners he's definitely like the us's fastest um but like people who are like fred curly is up there at the top of the sport but the rest of the people around him haven't been recently you know what i would be interested in what i i would be interested in something like say noah lyles decides to retire from like the olympics yeah and it's like a master's division like master's doping like over 40 did you like once they hit a certain age did you know that according to usatf us say track and field their events the master's category for track starts at 35 i am okay i am a master now there you go go ahead no i'm not ready for that but yeah that so i think to to to start shifting this though towards the the broader conversation yeah i do think that based on the the backers like the private of this particular event yeah i do think that this is trying to speak to the folks that are within the andrew huberman yes absolutely brian johnson rfk yeah like all these people dr mark hyman like all these people that are within that that manosphere i totally see this i think so speaking to that audience so um that like was is it is brian johnson the guy who's trying to like live forever yeah like he's like in texas sunblood or something like yeah yeah so i think that that um i see this totally working for that crowd who's all about like human optimization oh yeah and all that stuff so okay so here's the question um let's let's move to the influencer athlete thing okay uh so here's the question if a coach athlete or influencer is selling things like fat loss muscle gain performance or longevity what do you believe that an audience deserves to know about what they are or are not taking so do you think that they should disclose things like trt glp1 anabolic use surgery or you know what's what's fair game like what do what should they disclose and if they if you think they should disclose things how should they even how do you even go about it i think it depends what they're selling let's say runner so let me let's narrow it for for you let's say running so running influencers running coaches should they disclose what should they disclose if anything i mean if they're using like performance enhancing drugs they should disclose that okay i think um so would you say peds yeah basically anything that could be considered a banned substance i would say banned substances yeah okay well i guess it depends if they're using themselves as their primary marketing like hook okay i let's let's go with like your average person is going to be showing more of themselves than they're showing of their clients even just their physical presence is going to be more of themselves than yeah it is their clients like they're going to be the face they're the face of their their own brand yeah but like thinking about coaches if they are displaying their coaching knowledge through people they've they're coaching and like them personally they're doing some band stuff for their own performances i don't know if i care as much okay and i'm thinking about from the if i'm looking for a coach i don't really care what you're doing personally i care if you know how to coach me to what i want to do you know like if i'm working on my 5k yeah and you've coached other people to run faster at their 5k i don't really care what your 5k time is and if you're like taking drugs to get there you know okay okay so do you okay let me ask you this though you're talking about their results i'm talking about what they're taking two different things but i'm just thinking about from like a coach an influencer I don't know if I care about an influencer yeah that's well I think we both are a bit different in how we yeah we look at it so that's why I'm I'm being specific about like what the person is taking though because I think I do think that there's a misconception that taking something almost kind of similar to a point you already made that taking something automatically means that you're at the top of that sport or whatever it may be there are plenty of folks who I mean I'm I'm fully aware of like people that I know who take the who take like testosterone like legal things and also illegal things like anabolics yeah and you like a couple of my guys like you wouldn't actually know yeah because they don't work that hard to be very frank it still worked out hard I'm like bro you're spending all that money on that stuff and then still just not following the plan so yeah I mean it's very similar to people who will take like I don't know if it's the same yeah it's the same as people who will take a GLP-1 and then really not work out and not change anything else yeah yeah and that's not me attacking GLP-1s it's that's people who take certain substances like do you I'm I would I I personally would like to know if I'm working with someone or if I'm considering hiring someone I would just want to be aware it doesn't immediately cross the person off like the potential list for me but I would want to be aware that they were taking like for me even like a fat burner I would just want to know that like you include that like that's fair game to you I think that makes sense for the space you're in yeah if like if a running coach was taking a fat burner I wouldn't care I don't think okay okay so if a running coach so to you um so let me ask you this though think think more for not you yeah but think for the people yeah so do you think it would be best practice do you think people deserve to know those sorts of things like should and and if so how how would you even go about doing that like I don't I don't know because I especially okay so okay so those people you know like when you have coach slash influencer because a lot of coaches at this point like yeah some of them like what they are coaches first who have influence yeah you know um and you know they'll they'll share their tips about like these are my favorite running gels or these are my favorite running shoes and all these other things and but they're not disclosing that they're on homeroom placement therapy also yeah because I think it's very natural for people to tie the things that you show to how you look and how you perform I think that's just natural yeah I agree so that's why I'm like well what responsibility do do we or me I guess at this point like we're sheesh hater um I'm only on creatine yeah so it's like what responsibility do would I have necessarily um especially as somebody like myself I think about this often because I'm you know I'm so big on like eat well sleep enough exercise regularly yeah have those foundations in place I'm never saying like that's all you ever need I'm just saying have those things in place like how how would that message be impacted if I didn't I somebody found out that I also have been taking testosterone for the past nine months I haven't but yeah um like would you look at me differently if you found out found that out or would you yeah if I were to if like someone I was following on Instagram who I don't I don't you don't preach but that's the word that's coming to my mind yeah that's fine I'm good with that yeah like is a certain way of getting to results and way of living and then you absolutely yeah you find out they're not telling you the whole truth yeah I do think that should be yeah okay it took me a while to like get there but that's that's the part I'm that's what I've been trying to verbalize yeah it's like there's a brand that that we see or we put together this vision of a brand in our head and so when we find out that maybe there's more details than that we didn't know yeah I think especially for influencers I don't know why it feels like I think just because they have more influence on a wide audience especially like younger people for for my clarification when I talk about influencers I'm talking about folks who their primary their primary source of income from their presence is based on sponsorships product discount codes things like that yeah versus somebody who's a coach who's primarily a coach their primary source of income is their coaching and they happen to also have sponsorships because coaches can definitely be influencers for sure true they or they can influence people yeah they can be both um I would like to take back something I said now that I've thought about it more okay all right strike it from the record what would that be I don't think I would hire a coach that's taking PEDs for themselves even if like their athletes aren't I just started thinking about it from like this obviously is not a one-to-one comparison but like in the pro athlete world yeah when an athlete gets popped mm-hmm and then other athletes still work with the coach that coached the popped athlete they have people question if they are also by association yes and I would not want that around me because I am very by the books yeah especially you know I like to try to win age group things so right yeah yeah can't be tainting my name with allegations I'm never beating these allegations yeah yeah I think that's a very I think that's a very good um I think that's a very good point that you bring up and I could totally see that I could absolutely see that it becomes a bit more difficult okay I think especially when we're talking about to move away from the running like people selling body recomposition or fat loss and they're using like GLP ones I I don't like that yeah some time ago within the last couple years there was that one woman Janelle something roner or rana something like that I can't remember her name I just I remember this was like a whole controversy because for months she had been talking about the you know counting your macros and these different things and people were asking in the comments I only heard about it after it all it got exposed I didn't even know who she was but apparently like within her demographic I'm not her demographic within her demographic like they were all up in arms and it was even sketchier how she ended up announcing it because she was on I think she was on TikTok and she said you know I'm gonna I want to get really get into it but um so in order to really like walk you through it I need to move you over to like YouTube because that's where I can really talk long form yeah and if you understand for for those of us who understand how the engagement game works I'm not going to talk about it because I'm not going to you can you start building up the ability to get monetized I know this because I'm on like a long term journey to try and get monetized on YouTube yeah the way that it starts is first you have to get a certain number of watch hours oh yeah yeah yeah so while she could have absolutely talked about it on TikTok and just multi multi-part videos she was like if you want to hear the whole story you need to come over to this platform so she basically like monetized her own like controversy yeah smart chess not checkers yeah exactly chess not checkers yeah that's why I always tell people when you like when you see certain things that happen in this industry you can never unsee them again yeah just like ever so anyways yeah her basically the example was like she eventually came out and said like yes she had been on a GLP-1 and then there was a lot of conversation around well that doesn't negate the effectiveness of the she talked about because she talked about things that I would absolutely support protein first fiber making sure that you are not afraid of carbohydrates eat plenty of fruits and vegetables enjoy some decent some things that are more like fun processed foods in moderation drink your water go get your steps strength train like all that stuff yeah she just never disclosed she was also on a GLP-1 you know and of course in hindsight everybody's saying well or people were saying well had you you know we would have still believed in you and we would have still followed you? I'm like, no, the F you wouldn't. yeah no you wouldn't because that the glp-1 versus non-glp-1 has become very polarizing very polarizing yes at this point so i don't know i don't know we shall it's a tricky question yeah it is it is um as far as like what what needs to be disclosed how would you even go about disclosing it and things like that so my my advice for folks would be if that matters to you about a particular individual that you're either following or really i would say it'd be that you're utilizing for any sort of guidance or inspiration let me just put it that way yeah then try to find long form content for that individual whether it is a youtube video a podcast long form emails at this point if it's someone who is decently known i mean i even put myself in this category like i don't even think you have to be well known like i don't consider myself well known in any way shape or form like just about everyone who has even a modest following has been on another podcast something long form at some point in time yeah so you would be able to get at least an understanding of like what have they consistently shown over time and i think that that's that's a what i would say would be a good place to start yeah for those that are like okay well we've talked about all this but what can i actually do i would say find as much as you can try and find some long form stuff and then scroll back like look at has the person been consistent in the things that they talk about we all change our mind on things but a lot of the basics a lot of us have been talking about for forever and a day yeah that's what i would say so cool great wrap all right yeah perfect see right right on time you see that right on time yeah i know um it's like i understood the assignment i know well if people if you like to reach out you can reach out via email lifting running living pod at gmail.com or on instagram at lifting running living pod uh i do still check it even though it's bricked a lot but you can message us fantastic all right thank you so much folks for tuning in to another episode of lifting running and living take care of yourselves and we'll talk to you next time Peace out. Summary:

FAQs

The Brick is a physical device with a magnet that you tap your phone against to block certain apps and websites. It helps limit distractions by requiring a physical action to unblock them.

The Enhanced Games are an Olympic-style competition that allows athletes to use performance-enhancing substances under medical supervision. They were held in Las Vegas on May 24th, with events like swimming, track, weightlifting, and strongman deadlifts.

It depends on their role. If they're primarily influencers using themselves as a marketing hook, they should disclose banned substances. However, for coaches whose primary value is their coaching knowledge, personal use may be less relevant unless it affects their credibility.

Look for long-form content like podcasts or YouTube videos, and check their consistency over time. This helps you understand their true approach and whether they've been upfront about any products they use.

No, they are not recognized by official governing bodies because they fall outside normal anti-doping rules and may involve banned substances or equipment like polyurethane suits.

Critics argue that it normalizes risky drug use, turns enhancement into entertainment, and could influence younger or everyday athletes to chase performance through drugs instead of focusing on training, recovery, and long-term health.
