BREAKING 🚨 Florida State FIRES Mike Norvell | What Went Wrong, Replacements & MORE!

Florida State has officially fired head coach Mike Norvell following a string of losses, dwindling fan support, and a visibly apathetic crowd during a key game against Clemson. The decision, driven by financial losses from empty seats and a lack of program momentum, signals a major shift in leadership. The podcast highlights that the front office’s missteps in hiring and strategy have undermined stability, calling for a complete overhaul. Instead of large buyouts, the analysis emphasizes investing in player development and performance incentives to build a culture of winning. Top candidates like Jake Dickert and Manny Diaz are recommended for their proven ability to win with limited resources and strong team chemistry. The broader lesson is that college football success depends on player performance, not spending, and that effective leadership requires accountability, transparency, and a clear focus on results. With the hiring process now underway, the podcast positions Florida State as a program in transition, where real change—both in coaching and culture—is essential to long-term success. The conversation underscores that fan loyalty and institutional growth go hand-in-hand with tangible on-field results, and that true progress comes from winning, not promises.

The Cover 3 Tailgate, where they see those sirens in their feet, you know exactly what that means. Mike Norvell, fired at Florida State. It has been made official. This is a hot seat situation that we have talked about for years. It is also a football situation that is very interesting. And very intimate to The Cover 3 Podcast. Because not just having Danny Cannell, having Bud Elliott, but Tallahassee, welcome to The Cover 3 Podcast. You know, Madison Social, welcome to The Cover 3 Podcast. Our biases are our experiences. This one matters. All right? So the sirens are in the feed. The Florida State, after the loss to Clemson, has made the move on Mike Norvell. So now we get to have the conversations, officially, that we have talked about. Loosely, for some years now. Danny, didn't get a chance to hear from you last night. Do you think the game was the last straw? Like, what was, what do you think were the 11th hour moves that led to us finally getting to the place where Florida State is in the job market? I think it became completely obvious what needed to be done. And that's what I've been telling Florida State fans. Because I have been one that has tried to get them to hang on. To root for Mike Norvell, realizing the best situation would have been for Florida State to get to eight or nine wins, to not have to pay the buyout, to be able to get some momentum going into next season. And very clearly, that's what the president and the board wanted to happen to. Nobody was rooting more for Florida State last night than the board and the school president who just put out this letter last week. Like, that would have been the best case situation. And I think that's why the president put out the letter. He's like, let's get out in front of this. Let's try to show our support. Even though it was very clear, like, this is not our standard. But once you saw the game unfold, and you saw, I mean, an offense which has been atrocious, light up Florida's defense, and you saw an offense turn it over seemingly every possession, and then you looked up in the stands, and you saw a half-empty Doak Campbell Stadium and an apathetic crowd, it just became completely obvious that it had to be done. And I don't think it was a hard decision. Now, I wonder what took place in the meeting this morning was probably like, all right, we need to do this. How are we going to do this financially? And that's what they're going to figure out next. That's the next piece of this. But it just became clear, like, there's a healthy balance there that ain't got to take place. All right, 50 million. Is it worth it to kick another season, you know, just punt on the next season, as Bud had said so many times, another year, just to get it down to 40? That's, I think, that was the thing that was frustrating to some people was, like, it only, like, it only came down a little bit. Like, there's not that much difference in 50 and 40. And last year, I think, before last season was 58, you know, like. And the empty seats, man. The empty seats have dollar values, too. That was huge. That Florida State, Clemson, in Tallahassee should not have had that environment. So, from a business standpoint, I understand why that would have happened. But, Elliot, join in. What's up? What's good? What's going on, guys? We're making it happen. If ever something called. Boy, that's called Modelo. Let's go. Oh, man. All right, Bud, were you able to hear what Danny was just saying? I did. Yeah. Okay, all right. Yeah, feel free to jump in. I think they already had the financial talks. Like, I think they were hoping that Norvell, you know, could, like, look, the remaining schedule was pretty garbage, right? You know, Clemson, Boston College, Pitt with a, you know, third string QB. Obviously, you probably take the loss. You know, the loss to Florida, you know, the NC State without a coach and a very banged up team. So, I think that there was hope that they could sell hope to enough fans who didn't want to look under the hood and see that Mike Norvell wasn't building a damn thing here, right? And, you know, continue to buy tickets. And, you know, from a business perspective, hey, like, you know, look, we went five and seven last year. Can we sell seven and five, eight and four as progress? You know, can we sell, despite the fact that SMU whipped your ass on a down-to-down basis, right? Like, they gave you the ball four times on, like, ridiculous fumbles. You know, can you sell a close loss there? Can you sell a, you know, good start against Alabama before the rain delay? And then I think, like, the way they lost the game and the number of cancellations that they had after Miami and after people didn't, they didn't get fired against Miami, I think that kind of added up. Like, I had several friends who have been 20-year season ticket holders who canceled, right? And they're like, we're not doing the same. After Miami? After Miami, yeah. They're like, like, the Monday after Miami because they didn't fire him on Sunday. They're like, this is not a serious organization. I got better things to do with my time than watch this joke for progress. So, like, those empty seats were sold tickets. Next year, they might be unsold tickets. Correct. That's the big distinction, you know, that you have to make there, right? But I'm very confident they had already talked about the money, like, realizing, hey, like, this is a Mike Norvell team. We haven't won a road game in a thousand-something days, y'all. Like, there's no guarantee you go seven, five, eight, and four. Like, the players don't respect him and largely, you know, make fun of him behind his back. So, there's no guarantee that they play consistently week to week. And so, yeah, like, I think it was obviously needed to be done. Tom? I'm just happy for my boys. Just, I've seen them suffer for far too long through this regime. I'm just, this is probably the best day they've had in a Florida State season in a while. So, I'm just, that's why I'm wearing this hat. I usually wear this hat on the 4th of July. It's an American hat. It's about freedom. We are free for Mike Norvell at Florida State. It's a brand new era. I actually did grab my cold beers and gator tears, Madison Social Glass, you know, to be able to stand in solidarity as well. I mean, I think that the position for Florida State football, both in terms of the way we're talking about it, the way we're thinking about the future, what would happen going into the spring? What would happen going into the summer? The soul of Florida State football would get beaten down if Mike Norvell was leading this team into the 2027 season. You know, y'all talk about the business side, which I agree with. The tickets that were sold tonight or against Clemson might not be tickets that are sold later, but just the way that college football is going to treat Florida State with a new head coach. It's so different than if Florida State was trotting out lame duck Mike Norvell, which he already was this season, Chip. I mean, I could not go through another offseason of pleading, like begging Florida State fans to root for the program and like trying to get, I can do it for one year. I get some of the finances and I think, you know, that was the right thing to do. And, you know, but to do it again, I couldn't do it like in good faith to the fans. Like I just couldn't buy in. And I do think if he would have got to eight wins. I think you could have had some fans buy back into some optimism, but like he didn't. And like, that's what I've, I believe the whole time. I'm like, it'll take care of itself. It'll become obvious what needs to be done. And that's the point. i was at last night it is obvious a change needs to be made but yeah like our fan is short for fanatic there are enough fans out there if you went eight and four even if it was like the most bs eight and four ever that you could have sold progress to them even though like under the hood like recruiting is going terribly they're having to like massively overpay to get some four it's all like vanity recruiting like the players they're bringing in like the ones that are good they're having to overpay for like crazy compared to the competitive offers that these guys are getting right which is why a good player would say yes to this program right now which is kind of a joke you know um so like there's not enough people who understand that's going on right so they're like there's a lot of fans that i mean the average person doesn't watch cover three or i mean like they watch oh no but i'm saying like like the really informed college ball fan is such a small percentage of the like the total fanhood out there like this is the number one college ball podcast in the country right like we see the numbers obviously but at the same time you know like you could definitely sell eight and four as progress if you wanted to but like danny said uh mercifully it took care of itself you know and i think it's like the first of a couple important steps they need to make you know what are the next that's a great this don't don't get the candidates we'll hit a break no not candidates but yeah i i think the next is you have to realize that this front office that you put together is not good right like you botched that process like you botched that process you botched that process you botched that process pretty significantly and i think you have to make sure that you don't let peter collins whose board chair seat is up before the next football season you know force this front office to stay there because that was in some ways kind of his baby right like hey we're gonna have an overhaul here we're gonna have a gm like okay great in theory but like you guys botched that hire badly like that is not a good front office there until has i think it's probably just as bad as they post from duke right and not the guy you'd want to go get from duke but nuke is well known as the brains behind the duke operation you didn't get banuk right you got john garrett who's obviously you know cowboys connections with his brother jason garrett who mike alford the former ad like just wanted to play fantasy camp with dallas cowboys in tallahassee pretty much because he's super tight with the cowboys so i do think the timing of this is good because i anticipate they will get feedback from big-time agents to hey we're not signing up for this arrangement here you know like now guys without leverage certainly like you can kind of force those kind of terms on them but if you want to make this work you need to get a real front office and i don't believe they have one right now so i think the fact that you didn't wait to do at the end of the season allows them about a month of feedback from agents out there because remember these agents these agencies have nil divisions now so the nil division knows who's a good gm and who's not and they're quite representation division yeah they're quite committing to also is something that we've been thinking about yeah yeah so i think that's really the next step right like you got to like have a little bit of reality check here and say hey man great idea in theory how the process played out was largely a disaster you can't be running this front office back because at that point i really care that coach is like i don't think that's going to be successful um and so you kind of got to figure out like peter collins boards like as board chair that term is coming to an end like are you going to let him make these really important decisions unilaterally or is mccullough going to step in and say hold on like let's get a little more feedback from other sources and then we're going to have to figure out how to do that all politics are local so i please i mean like this is one thing we actually have an opportunity as the uh the best college football podcast in america to differentiate ourselves it is with this story give us why peter collins is the board chair and explain the the dynamics there because we've already discussed that if alford's out as athletic director and something that we've discussed here on the show is you kind of create that power vacuum who's going to be there is it collins is it mccullough what's that dynamic look like to your eyes like people i talk to to think brian murphy will be the next board chair right he's the uh ceo and founder i believe of rely quest which is a you know pretty huge company um he's a little older than i am i believe he's probably like late 40s uh look i think collins has actually done a lot of good things and i don't want to discredit a lot of the good things that collins has done right um i think on this specific issue of hey we're going to have realignment we're going to have a front office i think the idea was good i just don't think the execution was good and the idea that we're going to stick with that because we don't want to admit that we botched the execution of this idea which was good in theory i think will be harmful to them danny do you read i mean i'm not but you in a like i don't think peter collins is some like like you know evil guy or like no like like i think he's a passionate knoll right like really has true love for the university successful business guy we don't get them all right we don't get them all right on the show right but like you got to be willing to admit that was a mistake of executing the idea that we botched the execution of this idea which was good in theory i think will and move on from the front office as well yep um before we get to candidates anything else anything like what's the i was just asked how do you go from 13 and 0 to what happened next and it's really hard to put a finger on because i don't think you forget how to coach but i do think norvell struggled to get the players to respond through adversity which i think is going to be a challenge for a lot of coaches in today's portal era when you start paying players and they're showing up for a paycheck because remember after they went 13 or now and then they lost to georgia it has not been the same since then like they that year they spent they went all in again on the portal and then that season they quit on mike norvell yeah and so like they just for whatever reason he couldn't get the players to respond i mean i don't know if he didn't adapt or his messaging just because i mean i and i've heard him give a lot of speeches and they kind of do start to sound a lot alike it's very baptist revival danny constantly yeah so he wasn't able to get the players to respond you know and i think that was something that probably was because i still like you mentioned a couple times i think he's pretty good i think he's a good offensive play caller yeah i think he can call plays but you got to get the strategy is one thing and then buy-in and energy and motivation and i'm pad level bud talked to me those are real things like you got to be invested to play this sport especially now because you're not going to be able to play this sport you're not going to be able to play this sport because everybody's paying and if you don't show up there you cannot go through the motions and it felt like florida state started going through the motions the last you know two and a half seasons and if you do that you're going to get beat and they did and like important boosters had the same feedback that danny just gave about like how he thought the players maybe didn't always tune in like like i talked to some like pretty big boosters like man like dude just talk to me like a human just level with me like like like not all it's like constant rah rah screaming at me type stuff like it was kind of few and far between when you when you would get like just real down to earth just talk to me uh type conversations you know from people who give like you know more than 20 grand a year type stuff like like you know pretty significant six figures or seven figure donations so um i also think like there you can be like you can have an early edge in a market which they did in the transfer portal and kind of get high on your own supply of thinking that you would continue to have that early edge to the right um like they were all in on the portal when there was very little competition in the portal right and norvell didn't have a lot to do with that like derrick ray and a couple like other people saw an opening it was a small group and they're like guess what you're gonna have keon coleman on your roster that wasn't mike norvell right like they went out and got him so i do think got a little more involved with personnel um and i also think just as a group they kind of thought like oh yeah look we're we're portal wizards you know and they were when you were a big fish in a small pond but then once everybody started using it i think it uh your your edge evaporated and i think that they probably were overconfident in some ways in that area and as much as mike norvell has been painted as a jordan travis merchant there's also the like jared verse is a different player rayden fisk is a different player yeah you know like those guys came from albany and western michigan those are just different like they were wired differently they played differently they competed at a different level that's why you went from being like what was it 10 wins in 22 and then the 13 and ocs are 13 and 1 by the end of it you you it wasn't just hitting on um undeveloped players it was hitting on players who brought a different attitude right that could be able to establish standards that could exist beyond the rah-rah right 100 yeah yeah i got a question for tom i said something earlier is it hands down the best job available this cycle assuming that usc is not open i mean it's hands down the best job available right now that's for sure um yeah i think it depends like if usc comes open i think i'd rather have usc didn't they just win yeah yeah no that's why i'm assuming just not pulled that piece of paper out of his pocket i mean that's weird by the way just not i mean we that's a pun for the review for sure like that was like in lead a pun for the review like what the hell link what are you doing bro you just won i mean of jobs like that i feel like i'm not saying they will come open but i feel like are in the realm of possibility i think usc is a better job i think if oklahoma came open that's a better job yeah i don't think it's like a significantly better job i think it's a better job think right now it is. And yeah, I, I don't know if there will be a better job that comes open this cycle. So Florida State, if they get their crap together, and we will talk about it in the next segment where we think they're going to go or should go, but if they get their crap together, they should be at the front of the line to get the next head coach. So I hope they don't just go with Jimbo. No, I'd be surprised if they did this Jimbo stuff. I think there's enough out there of what went down behind the scenes at A&M and very closely matches the last couple of years in Tallahassee. It's like, dude, this guy has not been a decent head football coach in like a decade now. You can do better. I've enjoyed covering Jimbo Fisher. I've enjoyed speaking with Jimbo Fisher. Y'all's relationship with him is different than mine. I think that the worst thing for Jimbo Fisher, if he wanted the Florida State job, was for it to open right now. Yeah, agreed. Because now the table is set for the bell of the ball, right? So coming up on the other side, who ends up coming down the line when it comes time to line up those interviews? All that and more. Back here on the Cover 3 podcast. If you're just jumping in, thank you. That's why you see those sirens in your feed. You know exactly what that means. An instant reaction. An emergency podcast as Florida State has fired Mike Norvell. For this one, it wasn't a lot of like, oh my God, what went wrong? Right? You know, there's a little bit more understanding in the first part. There is, there is far less understanding on my part of where this ends. Sometimes you can predict it. I can't. DK, you get first word on this one. All right, let's go. Yeah, like, what are the steps, right? I mean, this, this, this is your show. Like, this is our show. This is your show. This is your platform. I'm fired up. I'm so glad that you're, you're here. You're available, right? Yeah. Like, this is good timing. Yes, I would not. I'll tell you what I would not want. Cause I'm seeing some names that are out there that are being put out there and they're great names. And I think they would be really solid names, but I do not want to be used by some agent to drive up the price for your client who is happy and content where they are. Kenny Dillingham. I think it'd be a great name. Yeah, sure. I would call him one time and say, is he interested? And if he says not, if he starts waffling or starts driving up the price, how much is it going to take? I'm done. Um, Eli Drinkwitz, I think is another one. I've seen his name. Is he really going to leave Missouri? I would, I get a quick phone call. I would kick the tires on it. I think he'd be a good hire, but I don't know. I would hire drink too. But again, is he really going to leave the sec in Missouri where he's been winning? And is he going to take Florida state? I would call. Absolutely. I would not play poker with drink. If I knew drink wanted it, I think that would be a fine hire. I do too. Same with Rhett Lashley. I think Rhett Lashley would be maybe number one or two that I would call, but how realistic are they? Like Rhett just turned down, you know, good sec jobs. Maybe, maybe one bad one, but good sec jobs to stay at SMU. I would make the phone call. And again, I wouldn't try to play poker with them, but I would not want to get played the way I think you could at coaches that are pretty content where they are. And, you know, have a lot of questions about Florida state's future. I just don't want to hire anybody that you have to pay a big buyout for. Like this program has spent so much money on everything. That is not the roster. Ton of money on coaches, ton of money on coach buyouts, ton of money on a, a player, a football facility. You did not need a ton of money, a ton of money on a stadium, which you actually did need to get it up to code, but probably not quite, but they actually did a good job on it. It took a long time and ran over budget, but like, that's the one I can defend. These coaching searches are a crap shoot, man. And if you're going to run this like a business, like they're talking about doing, like you've seen Kentucky do and LSU do, and you're forming a new corporation, right. To run football, like they're talking about, you know, planning on doing, then you need to look at how businesses actually run this. Does the NFL have these huge coach buyouts that cripple you and tie you to a coach forever? No. Does the NBA, does the NHL, does pro baseball, does, does, you know, like the premier ship? No, they don't. Cause players win games. Right. And like, so I don't, I wouldn't pay a $9 million buyout to go get drink. What's away from Missouri. I think he's a good coach. I think that money is better spent on the roster. Just like somebody will take this job. For like four or 5 million with a lot of incentives and for, Florida state is uniquely positioned to do this because they largely won the law. I know it's settled, but like they kick the ass in that lawsuit with these success initiatives. They're already getting a huge check just from ratings. They got none of the performance incentives last year for actually winning all the television ones. Right. Exactly. So if you dump some money into the roster, right. And stop like just trying to spend it on everything. That's not the most important thing, which the damn players like Danny played a decade in the NFL. He can tell you like, nobody's like, Oh man, we got this coach. Now, no, it's the players spend the money on the players, go cheap on the coach and be willing to pay big incentives for real winning. Right? Like it's very plausible. You could set this up to where, Hey, if you make a 2014 playoff within your first two years, here's a $5 million bonus. And from a business perspective, that'd be a great thing. You'd be happy to pay it. Right. Cause it means you're back in contention. You're back, you know, mattering right. That I just don't think you need to waste money on buying out a guy like a drink or, you know, I got what, what's what's Dillingham's buyout SMU is private. So, so Dillingham's a $9 million buyout. If he wants to leave, right. Drinks five Lashley's not public. There's no way in hell. I'm paying $9 million to Arizona state to go get Kenny Dillingham. And I like Kenny a lot. I know Kenny. I don't like it's still a crap shoot. I would. I'll go ahead, Tom. I could think of a young energetic coach. Probably won't have a huge buyout. Tallahassee born. What about Willie Simmons? I don't know. sure would he take it for like like you know two and a half three guys good football coach he's a real good football coach imagine it's a ton right like what's he making an fiu probably like one something maybe that it might even be less than that yeah i mean you could go get charlie weiss jr you go get blake baker like guys who want to be head coaches and there's very limited options right now in the sec in the big 10 you know what you just can't do is like how bad do you think penn state regrets giving matt campbell that buyout right now you know how like how crappy does nebraska feel for giving that kind of buyout like how bad does oklahoma feel for extending brent venables giving him a big buyout like at some point some team has got to end that cycle and stand up to jimmy sexson and just say man we'll we'll pay we'll overpay on the incentives if you actually win and we're going to put a bunch of money in the roster like we'll get to 38 40 next year which is probably going to put us number two in the acc all right and well above everybody else it's not miami if you can't win with that we don't want you coaching here well one thing that's very interesting from a like geographical standpoint is that florida state is in a coaching cycle one year after five sec jobs right exactly changed so you're kind of in the off year in terms of and beamer just won again so like he's probably not getting fired this year and venables won last year stupid like extend him right exactly like like deborah had his year last year i've been like if he loses the iron bowl maybe he'll take penn state auburn just auburn just filled like i think heibel's in a good spot because they're like still in contention for the playoff you know with a pretty young team you know clark lee's not going anywhere anytime soon i don't think kentucky's opening you might have some stability in the sec now if texas opens or something crazy then you know forget i said that but but but to me bud that only changes what you have to pay that doesn't change the candidate pool i'm just not convinced the candidate matters that much man put the money into the roster i don't fun i don't really care but just interesting you know like i've been like there's some real like there's some obviously bad hires you can make like hiring dion would be a disaster right jimbo jimbo i think would be a really poor hire you know just based on the last 10 like there are guys with a lot more promising than jimbo you know um like within reason just put the money into the roster and i don't care like if you think you can predict who's going to be a good coach and and who's not like cool man i've yet to meet you i said after they beat louisville if i was a coach in the market or if i was a school in the market for a coach i would call jake dickard i would call jake dickard oh after louisville beat florida state no after wake forest beat louisville after wake beat louisville yeah he did i i just have low i mean in last year he built up washington state helped them transition from a really white funky time going from the back 12 is dead builds them into a winner goes to wake immediately turns them around i mean people kind of forget because we're seeing what they are this season nobody was even aware what they did last season they were really good football team i think the dude's a great coach i looked up his buyout it's three and a half i think he would be somebody who could lure away from wake forest i i would that would probably be one of my first calls so we'll go ahead tom dicker or a comment i have a dicker take and it's not about his ability as a coach it's i think he's a great coach but he's won at washington state and wake forest very much do more with less jobs do you want to bring in a guy who's going to try to do more with less at florida state or do you want to bring in a guy who could you know do more with more but see we don't know like but we don't know what those guys can do i mean obviously i think you're alluding to matt campbell which always did more with less and then it doesn't translate his style like maybe it didn't work at penn state that was a miss it feels like who knows what it looks like moving forward but i just look i don't even consider it doing more with less i just think you find a way to win like no matter what it is like i mean i love when he's out there saying don't tell me about the payrolls figure it out that's the kind of coach i want to come into florida state and say like i'm gonna get as much money as i can but we're gonna figure it out no matter what we're gonna figure out a way to win so the jake dickert part of this stands out because i don't think we're gonna be able to figure it out and i don't think we're gonna be able to figure it out i don't think we're gonna be able to figure it out and i don't think we're gonna be able to figure it out and i don't think we're gonna be able to figure it out and i don't think we're gonna be able to figure it out and i don't think we're gonna be able to figure it out and i don't think we're gonna be able to figure it out and i don't think we're gonna be able to figure it out and right you know like tony elliott is sitting there and he comes out and he goes that is a team that is well coached that is playing with enthusiasm that is listening to the message and like like he was so distraught not distraught but i mean he just laid it out there after wake forest won yesterday just like that is a coach who has the team like all pulling on the rope in the same direction at the same time maybe it's a mario cristobal who was that was with nick saban in alabama was at oregon where you do have resources and it did take a couple years right but he put in the foundation that's the fun thing about trying to look at like do you take the more with less and think that he can do it or do you take somebody who knows what it looks like at a blue blood because you know what's going to happen if florida state hires that candidate in my opinion it might look like mario's first two years it might take a little bit to be able to put in the building blocks and build a foundation the only difference is cristobal first two years there was no portal right um like i i think that if you're fsu you just look down south does anybody think mario cristobal is some good coach remember we were a lot for clock mismanagement yeah like he manages the organization really well and they spend money on the roster a lot of money that's like the one thing fsu has just refused to do in comparison to what like they certainly outspend like a good number of teams but like in comparison to their facility spending and their coaching spending it it's really low like change what the pie chart looks like start putting money into the roster don't hamstring yourself with some big-ass buyout okay what do you think oh what do you think of manny diaz would love it me too especially if you can bring banuk i think he would kill it so that's where you find out that's where you find out about garrett uh john garrett i think we already know about garrett i mean i'm just saying like that's what they'll get a dose sure knows about garrett right and that's where you find out and willie simmons by the way was also at duke in 2024 as well so he might know too yeah he might be more willing to say okay i'm going to take this opportunity i'll figure that aspect out but i think the tires on manny and he tells you quickly i want my front office there which i would say then it'd be great i think manny would be i said jake dickard those would probably be my two first calls would be jake dickard manny diaz i think both you wouldn't get you know potentially i don't say embarrassed but like turned down maybe that's what happened with penn state last year everybody started oh my gosh nobody wants this job you know you don't want to be stuck in that conversation and then all of a sudden you think you're going to get extension rule extension you know you're getting donut or a cookie cookie door yeah yeah and i don't have a lot of confidence they're going to do a good job here by the way with the search yeah uh well hey bud come settle in bro you want some political infighting you you want a board and a president and an athletic director that are on the same page i know you don't have an athletic director sitting right now but yeah what do you think happens first the coach or the ad coach it kind of depends on who you go after right like because they're going to have like the ceo of this new venture and they're going to have the ad right and the ad is going to like going to sit under the ceo um now is that like actually sitting under him or is that just kind of like yeah i've oh have you been talking to people about that the organizational like org chart stuff i mean a little bit but like there's not a lot of clarity here which is not shocking their communication on this whole issue has been kind of crappy it was a statement from one guy the president as opposed to like a triple signed you know chat gpt release like they did last year for stanford hey we've got watermarks on those now but we gotta be careful yeah exactly you know we'll be able to tell if claude wrote it um you can get around that pretty easy just pay for extra no pay for the vip tier no there's a very easy way to get around it i mean bottom line they're gonna probably spend 35 to 40 next year on a roster they should if you're a state university yeah if you're a coach looking at that you're like oh shit that's attractive i can go win nine plus in this crap acc right like you're gonna say man mike more more than real did a terrible job okay like that you're walking in here that's not low stress but the first couple years if you do it right it is kind of low stress because you don't have crazy expectations you're one so let's throw out some other names who else i would say like from the beginning i would say the coordinator side like a charlie weiss jr blink baker um schumann i guess feels like he's just kind of top of the you know top of the pile yeah look he could do a great job we don't like tom finished sentence that's a great hire i have no idea if it will work out exactly that's an emergency podcast alley-oop for y'all don't know like yeah zero planning for this podcast well we could kind of be planning this for like we've been planning this for like 20 months bro fair i'd kick the tires on brian haynes at indiana defensive coordinator i kind of wonder if he's not like nfl but right yes i think you definitely make a call yeah or another big 10 job shannon dawson you're in the acc the defenses can't be that good shannon dawson i would definitely shannon dawson i would definitely look you could say hey like he's had a lot of success with the highest paid quarterback in the sport two or three years in a row right or close to it so go get him a quarterback yeah exactly i i mean this is kind of in vain with uh the dickert kind of stuff that i was again i'm not i'm not poo-pooing dickert because again we have no idea but a name i think could make sense for this program and this is somebody who i'm obviously a fan of i've mentioned it before and i wouldn't be shocked if he would be interested in leaving his current power forward gig for another power forward gig where maybe the ceiling's a little higher pj fleck if you're looking for a ceo type of person who can run the program pj fleck is a great person to work with and i think he's a great person to work with pj fleck is a great person to work with pj clearly has shown the ability to do that and while he doesn't recruit a bunch of five and four stars to minnesota he does a very good job of getting the best players available to him to come to minnesota i think if you put him at florida state with his approach and his kind of personality and his energy i think he would recruit very well to tallahassee so i just yeah i don't know i think buyouts three million to get them out like that's not an insane number no they recruit the state of florida well no they recruit the state of florida well no they recruit the state of florida well i guess the pushback would be i guess the pushback would be i guess the pushback would be he's a little norvellish as far as like he's a little norvellish as far as like he's a little norvellish as far as like the energy and excitement type thing the energy and excitement type thing the energy and excitement type thing um but clearly his players don't tune um but clearly his players don't tune um but clearly his players don't tune him out like crazy him out like crazy him out like crazy no and he wins consistently unlike norvell no and he wins consistently unlike norvell no and he wins consistently unlike norvell who who was doing that same kind of crap who who was doing that same kind of crap who who was doing that same kind of crap while going you know five and seven or while going you know five and seven or while going you know five and seven or four and eight he's he's at minnesota four and eight he's he's at minnesota four and eight he's he's at minnesota which is a bottom tier far as resources which is a bottom tier far as resources which is a bottom tier far as faulkner uh i don't think so uh i don't think so uh i don't think so i don't i don't know if he's like head i don't i don't know if he's like head i don't i don't know if he's like head coach ready coach ready coach ready bob chesty bob chesty bob chesty yeah i mean i'd call him but there's no yeah i mean i'd call him but there's no here is that we get our players talking in their classes and they connect a story with a player and a face. And if they connect a story with a player and a face, then they're coming. It's great. I've heard Bob sell his program a little bit too much for a team that's undefeated. You know, what about Brent Brennan? West Coast fit kind of weird guy though, isn't he? Like, I don't know if he's going to leave UCLA guy. Yeah. So let's get Chesney to Florida State and then Brennan can go to UCLA and everybody's happy. Everybody wins. What about I? Is there any Manny doesn't love me. Is there any beat on whether Manny would be interested? Well, he's a Noel. I think the aspect of getting to have a crack at Miami after a wait. Yeah, it would be very good. And he's like, I mean, what Miami's working with now, like compared to what they gave Manny is night and day. I think Manny did a fairly decent job with the state that Miami was in when he was there. Agreed. Me too. And we touched on it a little bit. Like this is a program that if you just do a B minus job should be in the playoff conversation every single year should be pretty much in the playoff every single year once they go to 24. And a very attractive gig because of that. Right. And like with with the wins you got in the lawsuit, if you do a decent job like long term, I think you're absolutely screwed if you stay in the ACC in the short term you're actually fine because of those checks. As long as you just spend the money on the roster start winning some ball games and there ain't no way any coach in 2026 is thinking long term. Right. Yeah. I can't really afford to. No, no. I mean, it is college football could be different in five years. Can't try and project that. That's a failing position. Definitely. I'm Charles Huff like that. That's not happening. Jeff Brom's not going to leave Louisville for that was another one. Like I would take Jeff Brom. I would too, but I don't think Jeff is going to leave. That's the definition to me of you're going to get worked by the agent. Not their personal department, but yeah. Yeah, it's it's a tricky situation because we are technically employed by the same company, but you know who doesn't have a buyout right now? No. No. Okay. Absolutely not. All right. Ryan Day. No, no, BK respectfully, but no. I think it's similar to Jimbo. Don't you? Yeah. Like Jimbo couldn't get a sniff of a decent job last year. There's a reason for that. Don't make that kind of mistake. Like they Jimbo knows those roads. He's at everybody. Danny, I'm sure you got a bunch of the calls too. Hey, man, I got to start pumping Jimbo. Like, no, I don't. I love it even more to you are not reporting, but I'm guessing that there's a campaign behind the scenes to be able to make that happen. It has been already been taking place. I love that there are so many Ohio State fans who are ready to punt Ryan Day out of Columbus. You people have no idea how to handle failure. It's a great example of the players, not the coach, though. Look at him last night. Ohio State fans just soiling themselves for the last whatever, however many hours since that game ended. Just Christ. Like, how much does Ohio State spend on its coaching staff, right? Plenty. What do their coordinators make? Like three million apiece? Head coach makes, what, 10, 11, 12, something like that? I mean, you're north of 15 all in, just a head coach and coordinators, and your quarterback goes down, and you look like crap. Welcome to the Florida State Firing Instant Reaction Show. We're going to be cooking Ryan Day's ass for the next 20 minutes. I think Ryan Day's a good football coach, but he's not more important than his players. Yeah. Fair. Ooh, good job, bud. Like, I mean, he's seeing it. Would you rather have, like, a local high school coach in Jeremiah Smith or Ryan Day and local high school receiver, right? Choice is clear. Players win ballgames. Hmm. Summary:

FAQs

Florida State fired Mike Norvell due to a combination of poor on-field performance, an apathetic fan base, and a lack of winning momentum. The team struggled with consistency, lost key games, and faced empty stadiums, which negatively impacted revenue and morale.

The program is concerned about high coach buyouts, such as $9 million for Kenny Dillingham, and whether spending large amounts on coaching is sustainable when player development and roster performance should be prioritized instead.

By shifting focus to player development, investing in the roster, and using performance-based incentives rather than large coaching buyouts, Florida State can build a sustainable and competitive program.

Potential candidates include Jake Dickert, Manny Diaz, and PJ Fleck, all of whom are seen as energetic, successful coaches with strong records and a track record of building programs efficiently.

Players win games, and team success is driven by performance on the field. The discussion highlights that money spent on coaching should be redirected to the roster to create real competitive advantages.

The future involves a realistic, performance-driven approach where the front office focuses on winning, with clear incentives for success and a long-term commitment to player development over coach buyouts.
