Brandon Walker of the "Brandon Walker College Football Show" provides a comprehensive analysis of the 2026 college football season, focusing on playoff contenders and media bias. He debates whether Missouri or Oklahoma State can realistically make the playoff, ultimately favoring a strong case for Oklahoma State as a long-shot due to its elite defense and a promising winnable schedule. Walker critiques the apparent SEC bias in rankings, arguing that teams like Oregon suffer more severe consequences for losses than LSU, despite similar results. He underscores the inconsistency in how teams are evaluated, pointing out that the Big Ten's recent national titles contrast with the SEC's inflated status in polls. Walker's top 25 rankings highlight Georgia, Ohio State, and Indiana as elite, while placing UCLA and Ole Miss in mid-tier positions. He also addresses the overvaluation of teams like Missouri and Tennessee, emphasizing the need for greater transparency in media evaluations. A standout segment from "Tate of the Union" explores the imbalance in how conference performance is perceived, with Walker agreeing that the SEC is often overrated in polls despite not consistently outperforming other conferences. The show also touches on broader themes like fan sentiment, coaching stability, and the role of media in shaping narratives. Ultimately, the episode serves as both a strategic breakdown and a call for fairness in college football media coverage.

off yeah I'd like to clear something up first I'm Brandon Walker on the brand of Walker calls football show the one thing I want to clear up is I've had several people in the DMs or text or other things getting my attention and saying this saying Brandon hey love your show love the intro it's well done but those are Russian fighter jets in the beginning a impressive intention to detail I never would have noticed nor did I think about it be let me tell you why I haven't asked for it to be changed and this is very key I want you to listen to me the gentleman who did this with the intro for me and I think it's a very good intro was quicks and quicks if you don't know is the most powerful man at barstool sports dot com he does a lot of the you know the sizzle reels the highlights the the edits the anything there's a lot of guys to do it but he is one of the ones that does all the highlights the edits and he can he can cut you down with uh with a stroke of his keys on his on his laptop a stroke of his mouth he can cut you down so I don't want to go to quicks and be like hey quicks by the way Russian fighter jets I would rather have American ones because what he's going to do is then he's going to give me American fighter jets but also make me look like the cool aid man or make me uh make me have eight toes or are you going to do something in the edit uh where it's it's ridiculous and I look even worse and terrible so if if Russian fighter jets is what I have to live with in Russian fighter jets is what I have to live with I can't risk him uh doing some other edit to me where uh I'm I'm you know I'm the stay puff marshmallow man or something like that so just everybody just chill out just chill out um hey it's the Brandon Walker calls football show I am he Brandon Walker it is my show it's a Monday it's our kind of recap look forward uh several things going on right now we have uh I got four takes I've written down four takes I would like to get to including who's the third big 10 playoff team we'll discuss that in just a minute I didn't tell Liam Blutman about this so he could be he had a fresh ears on this I'll have my top 25 in a minute five voice mails tonight we'll do our games draft and for the first time for the first time Liam on my games draft I didn't struggle to write down 10 games I think I have 14 oh I didn't struggle to write down 10 or 14 either yeah it was very very easy to write down a bunch of games this week whereas previous weeks it has been tough to get to 10 that nine and 10 was a little tough um the chance here at CP shores is Mizubi Ole Miss I don't think so I think Ole Miss handles them pretty easily I I think this Missouri love out of nowhere is a little bit bizarre and strange they've jumped all the way up to what number 12 number 13 maybe Florida and A&M A&M is awful um Florida not that good either so I'm not sure where this love for for Missouri is coming around the fact that you think they couldn't handle Camario Taylor and Mississippi States offense and start well what makes you think they're going to be able to handle Trinidad Chambliss in that offense in in Oxford I think I think Ole Miss is going to roll um in fact that's I usually do an early bet one that I feel really good about I do this week and I'm a zoo is Ole Miss minus whatever it is six seven eight Ole Miss is it anyway I got some takes Bob Chesney from UCLA will be by in about 30 minutes 45 minutes what you had of about a 15 minute interview with him and Liam I get it I get it like what a one engaging incredible awesome leader of men that is like that I get it I previously didn't get it and I know other guys have gone after practices and you know Bill Simmons is gushing about it because he discovered college football a few weeks ago but I I get it and he's on the show and you will see me to the left him to the right and just remember the man on the left with the beer the gray hair looking like he's about to die is two years younger than the guy on the right Liam I get it I did I didn't think of that brand walker I I'm so happy that you've seen the light me and me and some of the players on Saturday after we won at Oregon we're just telling each our Bob Chesney saved our life and genuinely we made it I'm happy that you got to speak to him I'm happy that you see understand and get it now and the one thing that I'll continue that go brand is I think it's the coolest thing ever that he's got his dad right there with them and guys son right there with them and has a cast of side characters like Mikey V to have this family aspect that he harps on is one of the coolest most genuine things in the sport yeah I think it's amazing it's awesome I'm jealous of it I would do the same thing here on the show but my dad's dead all right here my takes who is the third big ten playoff team when we started this season we started we started with at least I started with the assumption that Ohio State a likely playoff team Indiana a likely playoff team Oregon a likely playoff team and then you build from there maybe USC could make it Penn State with their schedule they can make it and certainly through five weeks six weeks whatever it is I think you can scratch or we're gonna off the playoff list they've already lost twice they still have Ohio State and a couple of others coming up I think you can scratch Michigan off the list I think you can scratch Penn State off the list so if we're left with Ohio State and Indiana who play this weekend as pretty pretty solid bets to make the playoff in the big ten who is that third team and obviously Bob Chesney is on the show later by the way Billy Lucci stopped by two I forgot to say that Bob Chesney then Billy Lucci then we get to the bottom of this shit who is that third team obviously UCLA Bob Chesney is here they are undefeated having just went up to Oregon and one Iowa is five and one Iowa own paper coming into the season I thought the back half their schedule was easy I think it is stiffened up a little bit you have these are teams that wrote down wrote down five teams that I think are in the mix Iowa UCLA Wisconsin USC and Northwestern and some of those teams you might say what what the fuck are you talking about but hey I think those are the good teams now I might have missed one by the way I might I might have somebody out there that I didn't think about anybody off top of your head Liam no no yeah so here's what we got this is I want you to think about this so UCLA is five and oh right now which means they have seven games left they have Wisconsin this weekend then they have Michigan State Nevada then they're at Minnesota Illinois at home at Michigan USC obviously USC decent team Illinois doesn't really scare me at Michigan you know it's tough to go to the big house that time of year for somebody like UCLA so there's the seven games for UCLA Iowa's five and one they're at Minnesota they got Wisconsin at home at Northwestern Purdue at Illinois Nebraska Wisconsin's 4 and 1 they're at UCLA USC at home at Iowa Rutgers at Maryland at Purdue Minnesota USC is at Wisconsin Ohio State at home Indiana at Indiana Maryland and at UCLA and Northwestern is at Michigan State they're 4 and 1 Rutgers at home at Oregon Iowa at home at Ohio State at Minnesota Illinois now pretending you're not wearing UCLA underwear Liam which one do you think
Do you think has the inside track to the playoff spot? Unfortunately, I'm going to come off this bias, but I don't think it is being biased. I think that to me, there's two teams and the other one, Brandon, is a team many are pronouncing dead by still see the path for organ as long as Dante more gets back on the field. They they could win out. They could be the highest. A Ohio State doesn't look like world leaders, but speaking to the teams that you mentioned, UCLA, while losing Nico, I think we need to talk more about what UCLA has been able to do while lacking quarterback play. Nico ranks like 130th in the country in QBR. He had four, he had a four to four touchdown interception ratio. He's been a great leader. He's been a great runner. He hasn't been a good thrower. Let me address the first thing you said. I just don't see a world, even with Dante more back. USC Oregon goes into Ohio State and wins. I just don't see, especially Ohio State with Ohio State already having the loss to Texas. This is a team that's not going to be free and easy with this thing, especially let's say there's a world where they lose to Indiana. All of a sudden Ohio State's nursing a two-law schedule and they got to be on their pees and cues the rest of the season. I don't think there's a world that Oregon goes in there. Let's we forget that before Dante more went out, they weren't exactly great. I'm not going to act like they were either. I know. Yeah, so so I do think you can safely call Oregon dead. I have, by the way, I got a long shot playoff team in a minute that that makes Oregon look like they're fucking 85 bears. So I'm going to give you a plus 800 to make the playoff in a minute, knowing what I'm saying about Oregon. Now I personally think Oregon's dead. You got the quarterback uncertainty. You just got a team that looks like they're ready to quit, to be honest. That's what Oregon looks like to me. I might have a completely wrong read, but yeah, I think the two teams here to really look at are UCLA and Iowa Iowa at Minnesota is is is a tricky spot. It's been a tough place for teams to play this year. Wisconsin at Northwestern. That's a tricky place to play. Like there's nothing on Iowa schedule on paper jumps out at you and scares you, but at Minnesota at Northwestern. Those are not that easy this year. And if they were the other loss, they're they're done. So I don't know. I think it's a fascinating race setting up. If I had to power rank the teams for that spot, I would go Iowa one UCLA two and maybe USC three and then Wisconsin Northwestern on the outside looking at. So like, do you think a 10 into Iowa with their best wind being at Michigan gets them in? I don't think they can get to 10 into with their best wind being at Michigan. Their best one would be what at Northwestern and then yeah, probably at Northwestern, which isn't going to be sexy. It isn't going to be. Well, yeah, maybe they could. Maybe they could. Okay, they could lose Northwestern be 10 into because the schedule's not that tough. It's just my thing with I was they're going to be in every game no matter like I mean, they got they're all by house. They but for the most part, they're going to be in every game for better for worse. They're going to play up to an opponent, play down to an opponent. I don't know if I see them going unscathed every year. There's a team that gets in this playoff since we had the 12 team playoff that gets into the playoff based solely on the schedule alone. Yeah, it was Indiana a couple of years ago. It was Texas A&M last year, Tennessee a couple years ago when they got blown out by a house state. They kind of were that way SMU the first year. Like every year, there's a team that gets there in the playbook is predictable. When Iowa makes the playoff in six or seven weeks and I say, boy, it's a shame that their schedule got them in. They're going to say, well, we beat everybody in front of us. What do you want us to do? This is a schedule. It's the same every year with every fan base. I do think I was going to play off. They would be my number one UCLA with the quarterback issues. I know they're your team and everything. I just it's just a boy. That schedule is not that tough either. I know. And I remember we almost had a segment on the wall where UCLA got robbed and instilled in my brain. It's fried in my brain. We're on the prep sheet. It said UCLA. Why is the schedule still tougher? Like what tough schedule? I'm thinking what on earth is happening? There's a world. There's a world where USC UCLA's for a playoff spot. There is a world for that. I don't think USC is good enough to be the Ohio State or Indiana though. I feel like we're looking at the difference in USC organ, UCLA organ. There was a complete difference in the physicality and soft. I don't know. There's just such a cancer in a level of disconnect with Lincoln Riley and the AED and the team. It's not a good situation. But yeah, like two weeks ago, we were talking about like, man, once Lincoln Riley done, then they go up and stay at win. We're like, hey, playoffs. I have a playoff long shot for you. Bores, U-C-L-A's, USC's defense of softest baby shits as Fred Burge, 7257, that's accurate. Are you pre-recorded, Hogger McHawksky, you've show up on a burner account to this show every week and I do appreciate that. But what in your life as a grown man is making you go on a barsel chat and the screen pre-recorded every single week. Get some pussy, touch some grass or do something, Jesus Christ, thank you for being here. But it is pre-recorded, you're right, I pre-recorded this seven hours ago. Right after the yak, I ran home, gave the wife a little pickle tickle, now here I am. All right, so my playoff long shot, knowing that I just said, "Organ, I think they're dead." Do you have any idea, and this is a plus 800 long shot Liam, have you heard me talk about today, should you already know or do you have any idea who this is? I haven't heard you talk about today, the only team that I could think about that's around 800's Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State, no I wouldn't consider them because of the conference there and I don't consider them that long of a shot because I feel like they're, if they win the conference, bang, so what? It's in the same state. Oklahoma Sooners right now on Draft King Sportsbook, Oklahoma Sooners have been awful. Oklahoma Sooners are plus 800 to make the playoff and you say, "Brandon they've got John Matier and I say, I know. Odds are, they're going to lose at least one or two more games and not make it, but if we're doing long shots, dammit, let's do a long shot. $50 to win 400, $100 to win 800, $200 to win 1600." I think those, that's pretty good value when you have a team that legitimately has a top five defense in this country. If Brent Vendible's handcuffs, and I mean physically handcuffs, John Matier, every single week and says, "Just don't get us beat. Just please don't get us beat because they got them beat against Michigan. That's the only reason they lost was John Matier. They got them beat against Georgia. They would have lost any way, but he made it a blowout. But here's the thing. Oklahoma just beat Texas, right? Oklahoma's got two losses. Here's, Oklahoma's coming schedule. They're three and two right now. They're playing Kentucky this week. Kentucky coming off the high of beating LSU. They're seven point favorites. Oklahoma's going to beat Kentucky. They're at Mississippi State. I love Mississippi State. I don't know how healthy Mississippi State is. I'll say it like that. Let's say they win those two games. They got South Carolina at home. Is that a winnable game? Yeah, that's four in a row now. They're at Florida. With that defense against that quarterback, South Carolina just beat him by three touchdowns in the swamp. They got a little miss at home. Now, there's the one. Trent had Chandler's coming in to Oklahoma. But with that defense, you've got a puncher's chance. Then they've got A&M at home and they finish at Mizzou. Could they win out? They could. I don't guarantee it. I don't pick it. I don't call it. What I'm saying is at plus 800, I can make a reasonable case with that defense. They can beat Kentucky at home. They can beat Mississippi State on the road. They beat South Carolina at home. They can win at Florida. They can beat Ole Miss. They can beat A&M and they beat Mizzou. I think that is a worthy long shot to get in on right now. Because that Texas game is a shot in the arm. Thoughts Liam. You are a bold, bold man dip in your toes back into the Oklahoma waters. And I commend you for it. I don't see it. I listen, if you want, and I understand your logic. If you won't call football media guys, it puts a foot around everything and just look at the top 10 and say, "Man, I think my hand is got a shot. Man, I think I don't think nowhere
can do, then go listen to those other pussies, okay. I'm telling you, look around the world, look around the college world and use your imagination as something because your imagination is going to create a playoff team. Somebody's going to make it that we have no idea right now and somebody's going to miss it that we have no idea right now. So just really think about this because I really, really, really think if I'm looking for long shots and that's what I did, I cut off the top 12 teams and I said who in the next 10 to 15 could do this and it was Oklahoma's the one that came up with. Okay, I like, I like the bold, I'm going to look to now, I'm going to look to it one for me, okay. I think the coach sucks and I think quarterback sucks. I think this will guy why I can't believe you went down this road, but I love it. I like what you mean, but I think I think everything about them sucks, but I love them. But you can't quit them, somehow, some way you can't quit a team that you hate everything about and that, that's brand walka. Let me tell you about, not real, but the rocket money. Liam and Brandon, can you guys just send me more bleach so I can drink it? Because being a Michigan State fan sucks. Or put me in a coma and await me up for a b-ball season either would be good. I'm not going to suggest that. I do think you guys hired a long-term coach and not a short-term coach and there is a difference. There's guys that come in and in the short-term immediately fix things and there's guys that you can trust to build something stable. I think both Michigan State and Michigan hired long-term coaches. Now, it might be antithetical because both are old, but winning him is not a get your car in the garage, ping-pong, boom, and it's a Ferrari. He's get in there, tear it apart, and build a nice reliable vehicle that can go down the road the Michigan was already going on. And I think Pat Fitzgerald the same way. So I wouldn't overreact in year one. If this is the same in year two, year three, yeah, that's overreact, but I think Pat Fitzgerald is a foundational guy, is a build from the bottom-up guy. He's not. Listen, Bob Chesney walked into UCLA and I'm immediately turned that ship around. Not everybody is going to be that and I think that's okay. That was very reasonable take there, Liam. That was kind of lovely, man. Brandon, why is Noah Fafita not getting the national hype he rightfully deserves? Probably because they're playing defenses, nobody respects, if we're being honest. I mean, he was excellent against West Virginia. I just don't know that they're playing defenses that anybody's going to look at and be like, "Wow, there's no Fafita." Even though he's been around a while, probably deserves more hype than he gets, I will acknowledge that. I've already hammered Kentucky at plus six and a half, says JR Lancers. Well, that's one way to go about it. You could be very right. I think Oklahoma handles them pretty easily. But then again, what do I know? I can be wrong just as much as the next guy, just not as often. JMU to the American, Liam. James Madison University to the American Conference. Well done by Ebo and PFT. Let's go with JMU now to the American teams. You got JMU over there. You got Memphis. You got Tulane. This is a good conference, is what I'm trying to say. My brain just goes to much when I'm sitting there. That's fine. We could do a sport goal to figure them all out. There's a world, by the way. When JMU joins this, it's a very solid conference already. There's a world where every few years, maybe pretty often, the Americans just as good as the big 12, is that a crazy thing to think about? I'm not there yet. I'm not there yet. You're going to need a lot of money being invested in these programs and keeping up with the INAIL and everything. If that were to happen, all the money in the big 12, all those big money donors are going to be put in my hand. This can happen. This is embarrassing. I'm not there yet. I get it. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. They just don't have the resources. If it wasn't at the NIL, I would tend to agree with you more. I don't know. I feel like JMU's got just whatever machine they've got over their pumping players and money into their program. They got it. I think, are they worse off than the Cincinnati's of the world? I don't know that they are. Certainly, the Oklahoma States and the Texas Tex maybe, but I don't know. I think that's a league. That's a hell of a league. I think it's a league that every now and then can be really fucking good. Yeah. Let's be clear here. I'm not saying that for JMU, I agree. I think JMU is very much gang close to being in a power conference. That's obviously the goal. If they want to play in the big 12, eventually, they'll play there. If they want to play in the ACC, eventually, they'll play there. It's more so the rest of the conference. Two lanes already struggling again. They're down back to earth and the consistency isn't always there with a lot of those programs. This is for Memphis. This isn't for much. We thought Navy was going to be a great football team is here. They're not. Yeah. Fair enough. Look, if you want to pull my, let's see, the takes I had. I had the who's the third big team playoff team. Oh, I just wrote this down. I think the Missouri love that's coming out right now is odd. I kind of mentioned it at the top of the show. Missouri's a team who's up on the SEC pedestal right now for beating Florida and texting them back to back. I'm not sure why so many people came out of the Texas A&M game and press with Missouri. They were not very good in the first half against a bad team. I'm not sure why people are, like I've heard people say playoff from Missouri. I don't think so. If you're talking the SEC, you know, you put George and Alabama and Texas in that playoff mix and then build from there, LSU fighting for their lives. Ole Miss is in the playoff mix. I don't know that I consider Missouri somebody who's going to stay around for the long haul in the playoff mix in the SEC. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it's a pretty good quarterback, but the defense isn't that consistent. Mississippi State went up and down the field on them. That's what I think. Anyway, schedules tough to they still they still play at Ole Miss. They play they host Texas. They play at Georgia. They host Kentucky and Oklahoma. Yeah, I just that's not it's not a playoff team. That's an eight and 14. That's what I believe about Missouri. People are all up in arms and love with them. I don't see it. I think that's a pretty solid team that isn't going to hold up to the to the stronger teams of the SEC and they they've only played they lost to Mississippi State and Starkville. Anyway, my top 25, Luki Blutman, why don't you pull that for me. I go ahead and do my entire top 25 on Mondays. I released my top 10 on Saturdays. Number one, Georgia number two, Miami. By the way, I hate this this plane. Just the words. We do one for Twitter where we put the logos in there. I don't know why we're scared of putting the logos on here. I think we'd be fine. But you know what, there's smart people in this company that tell me what to do and I listen. Number three Ohio State for Notre Dame five, Indiana. Yes, I have Ohio State three, even though they have they have a loss. The way I look at it, they went on the road to a top 10 team. They lost one quarter by a significant margin that made them lose the game. They were in pretty good control. I think Ohio State, if I'm just talking about who the best teams in the country are, I don't get past three before I say the words Ohio State Notre Dame four. They haven't played football yet. They'll play soon. Number five, Indiana. I don't drop them. I don't raise them. They're just kind of what they are right now. I don't think they're nearly what they were last year. But you don't get prizes for being great in the first six weeks of the season. You get prizes for being great in the last six weeks of the season. Alabama six. Number seven UCLA. That might be a little high, but I don't know. Just the way they play, the way they've handled their business, I'm very impressed. And I don't know that there's that many teams in this country like Ole Miss doesn't really have a resume. But where do you put them? Do you put them down at 15? Ole Miss's resume is beating LSU, two losses and being Louisville, who's not very good. BYU. I got a Texas number 10. That's where they fall to Utah number 11. Mississippi State 12, Missouri at 13. Kentucky at 15. Oklahoma State at 14. Texas Tech. Iowa.
18 is wake for us 19 is Houston 20 is Boise State 21 is LSU 22 is USA 23 Baylor a team not No team nobody's talking about Baylor Nobody's talking about Baylor and they're just sitting there. I think they're pretty good Tennessee at 24 Which I don't know what to do. I think the AP has them at 17. That's way overrated. I almost dropped them out I just I just couldn't pull the trigger on that and then Wisconsin at 25 Smitty V2 says Ain't no way Baylor's ranked over Arizona. We'll read the list again to see if they're ranked over Arizona Because Baylor's on the list and Arizona's not Arizona's fine. Arizona's solid. I I like Baylor Simple is that um, what do you think thoughts about that Liam? I'd probably have Arizona in at the end of the top 25 I'd have BYU lower but also I don't know who I would put above BYU's the issue Maybe Utah, but like Utah also hasn't really played anyone yet been they've been coasting Again Georgia's the best team in the country. It's good to see your you're in on that now I think Alabama you can make the argument should be a little bit higher I think that they have really proved themselves. They played a really sound good football game against Georgia Georgia could be in by more but still Alabama's in that fine long call and Yeah, UCLA at seven is probably too high especially after an eco news by I know you did this before that But again, I'm gonna reiterate this They've been winning games without good quarterback play and I think that that's fairly scary Andrew Cooper says in the chat. Thank you for being in the chat If you listen to the podcast if you watch on YouTube you can always be in the YouTube chat Andrew Cooper says Baylor lost to a team that Tennessee beat All right fine. I don't really care at all Because Tennessee followed that up by going to Arkansas and almost losing to the worst team in the SEC by a mile Something's wrong with Tennessee right now. Tennessee is in the wilderness. Tennessee has no quarterback Tennessee has no belief in their quarterback. Tennessee's offense is in stuck in mud They might have beat Auburn a few weeks ago. That's fine, but I don't think Tennessee being ranked I think is very charitable right now. I agree 100 percent. I just I just don't see it like Arkansas is so bad And they gave Tennessee everything they wanted and and then some All right, lookie get the get the voicemails ready after I tell you about body armor Body armor this episode is brought to you by body armor flash IV my favorite drink to take out on the golf course Or when I'm being active in a day it gives me the electrolytes. That's why we We have high-class high-brow commenters here hyperlis trash Tennessee is ranked because they're in the SEC lol Don't bring that crybaby ass SEC shit here. Just don't don't don't bring that crybaby you guys the the fans online That answer every single tweet of from everybody of the SEC's overrated the SEC's this the SEC's that are way more annoying than the SEC Homer's just way more annoying and OG Bama family shut the fuck up You've commented the same thing 150 times shut the fuck up if I didn't read it the first time It's because I find you to be a mouth-breathing redneck shut the fuck up So anyway, um We have voicemails voicemails Five voicemails three one two six eight five 18 89 three one two six eight five 18 89 voicemail number one looking Very Brandon. This is Luke the Texas stand. You know I just feel like this has been waiting to happen waiting to explore Sharks often in ecotune and arched just being at the end of the day mediocre And I should listen to the number one ball watch in the country and the number one called triple expert But I thought that we would do better and obviously we didn't and now we are in a pit of despair And I just want to know what y'all thoughts are could this end up being a James Franklin some state situation Just goes downhill like how does Texas respond next week especially this a team like Mississippi state all right time to die so So it's a great question all right I don't think this team bottoms out. I think the defense is too good to bottom out I think the defense was good enough to beat Oklahoma But arch gave him a pick six and the special teams gave him a touchdown. That's 14 points the defense didn't give up They lost 2724 right that's 14 points the defense did not give up If the defense shows up and plays to that level and and gives up 10 to 14 points a game every time I don't think there's a there's a chance the bottom falls out but looking forward Texas does have um and look if you want to pull up the Texas schedule for me. I would appreciate it um I know they play Florida this week. I don't think you got to worry about that I don't think five loads the quarterback who's going into Texas and winning a football game um Mississippi state goes to Austin. I I'm scared. I mean, that's just I'm not sure we're ready to be to Texas on the road They got LSU on the road on LSU team that will be fight either fighting for their lives or maybe already packed it in If they lose between now and then I know they got Alabama between now and then they've got uh at Missouri Ole Miss at home It's not easy. Oh boy. It's not easy at all next three weeks Florida at home. Ole Miss at home. Mississippi State at home And then at Missouri No, I don't see the bottom falling out. I think they're I think they're I think they're good. I think they'll be fine Voice mail number two Blake Baker doesn't know what he's doing You play show-grade against McNeese and what do you do? Simblitz against an FCS school and then when it comes to on the goal line You see Kenny mentioned go trips to the far side of the field and you can't things at least get more than four people in the box A quarterback speak was so obvious. Come on. Come on. Come on. You seem not see that Blake Baker. I mean you got to be an idiot not to understand it That's football 101 that they have more than you. They're going to win the blocking game. I mean that is a ridiculous loss for LSU Agreed on all counts Credit to Will Stein and Kentucky. They are hanging in these games and taking advantage of a poor coaching on the other side I don't know what Blake Baker was looking at I think everybody in the country who's ever watched football Saw the setup to that play saw the everybody go out wide and said QB draw There were four guys on the line and one linebacker kind of lurking It was not enough and it was it was the most red C's parting Dead C's parting most C's parting thing. I've ever seen it was a bad defensive effort from the defensive coordinator and Blake Baker was somebody was supposed to be great for LSU So I get why you guys are upset right now. You have every right to be upset Um, all right next please Hey Brandon big fan first time caller big fan of everything you do mostly sports and you're the glue to the yak My question is at what point do we legitimately need to consider Jesse LaGrey for the hyphen? How ridiculous do his stats need to be because right now he's on pace to put up those ridiculous stats curious what your thoughts are Liam, would you like to answer this? Brown Walker. I looked this up on Saturday before our show because I was super curious Obviously he's playing up numbers that rival Jeremiah Smith numbers that rival anyone in the country He was 150 the one. I'm looking right now. He's now plus 9,000 The fact of the matter is do you think heisman voters have watched the second of organ state football? Do you think heisman voters are even cognizant of the fact of what LaGrey is doing as a true freshman? It was playing his first full or his second full year as a wide receiver in his life. No, they don't have a clue It's not a chance um Correct on all counts Heisman voters if you're looking for heisman voters to uh kind of pull up the You know pull up the log and see what's underneath for for heisman contenders They're not they're just going to pick whatever is just out on the on the forest floor there They're not gonna they're not gonna dig they're going to look at what's presented to them. Jeremiah Smith We'll be presented to him after no day. Miami C. J. Carr or or Malachi Tony or Darrym Minto will be presented to him They're not digging for a Jesse Ligree so it it sucks, but he is incredible, but they're just not doing it Uh next voicemail, please Miranda this is Noah out in the perhaps get I'm out here in the fucking field today We're harvested and I'm listening to the game. I got you to TV on a fucking Washington at the same time What a brutal fucking win, dude. I mean what else can he fucking do they can burn it one fucking throw it down If you have a stock How do we win that game? Why don't we just try to lock the putt in the forest quarter We're paying everyone back. Go block the fucking pond. Why are we rushing him? Oh This team man. I love him. They showed so much hurt. How do we fucking lose that? Oh well you lost because Indiana's a championship program in Nebraska is not anymore I don't know what to tell you you lost because uh Indiana has better players better coach and um Nebraska's not that tough of a place to play sucks been their brother
Next voicemail, please. I heard all this time is that Oregon's going to win national championship. Ah! Well, I guess they're now the lame ducks. And speaking of lame ducks, is Lane Tiffin already a lame duck in LSU? I mean, they can't win the big game that's hit alive. It's the same old Lane Tiffin. He's leopard doesn't change his spots when he becomes a tiger. Ha-ha-ha! I worry, William, I worry that Notre Dame VYU is going to threaten our run of happy Frank. Now, chances are Notre Dame goes in there and handles business. Chances are Notre Dame goes in there and wins by three touchdowns and we get the happiest Frank we've ever gotten. But I just do worry in the off chance that VYU beats Notre Dame. We lose happy Frank for the season, thoughts? Apparently in the realm of possibilities, Brandon, but I don't know if I want to live in that realm where we get in here on a Monday night. It's nice and cool outside where enjoying Chicago fall so much more than Chicago summer. And 38 minutes into the show, Frank the tank is screaming as lungs out and calling Marcus Freeman the ugliest coach in football. We don't need that. We don't need that. I like happy Frank. This show is the home of happy Frank and we're going to keep it that way. Thank you, Blutman. Any more? That's five by my count. Yes. Yep, that's it. All right. Let's do our games draft and then we got Bob Chesney coming up and then after that Billy Lucci, I think we got about 30 minutes of Bob Chesney who was just as engaging as a coach will ever be, it's unbelievable. I'd also like to point out that Liam Blutman has never attended one of my coach interviews ever. He has never been in the YouTube or he's never been in the stream yard. We call this thing for a coach, except for that one and he was just sitting there watching the whole thing. That's true, but I was right next to you for some role. Was it some role? I thought it was like I was next to you for some role. Let's see. And through Cooper says really triggered BFW the obvious common opponent error in his rankings. I don't make common opponent errors so they don't give a shit about common opponents. Are you still on the thing where Tennessee is should be ahead of Baylor because Tennessee beat Auburn and Auburn beat Baylor? If you are still on that, you're too emotional, get out of here. Don't watch this show. Go watch people that are going to change your diaper for you and scrub your little Tushy. I'm not going to do it. Tennessee is bad right now. Tennessee is bad right now and I'm going to say Tennessee is bad right now. I still got him at 24, even though against my better judgment, they went to Arkansas and were God awful. It's great they beat Auburn and Auburn beat Baylor. Don't give a fuck. Take that somewhere else. And we like look at this from the fan point of view. Do they watch Tennessee and think, wow, this is a great product. We're legitimately great. We go in national championship. Where are the standards? I don't know. Well, I do think the real deal Tennessee fans are, or if they're not all the way out on Hypole, they're at least going like, all right, Josh, show me something. I, you know, you saw me a bill of goods when you turn Hinden Hooker into what you turned them into and you haven't been able to turn a quarterback into something in three, four years now. Like I just, I just, if you're Tennessee, you, you, you thought you had a coach, it was going to give you this offensively and said he's delivered this for several years now and that's got to be confusing. Got to be confusing. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. What do we got here? Shout out UCLA and Blutman. Keep it up. Says Nick Simone. That might be Rick. I can't really see. Blutman has some Beno cook to him as Boone S.I.D. do you even know Beno cook was? No. Oh, wow. That's a generational thing right there. Do you remember Mark May and Lou Holtz, gospel ball final? Yeah, of course. I did the little the judge thing they did. Do you remember the Jefferson Pilot Sports Network? No. That's not the way. No. Ray Com was ACC Jefferson Pilot was SEC and I don't know what if Big Ten had an equivalent. I don't know if Pac-12 had an equivalent. My two first like big college football memories were UCLA playing Oregon State on Versus and I hid under the covers because we were losing by a good margin. I was embarrassed. I didn't want Mark here. My mother to see me and I thought, "Hang under the covers would save me." UCLA being Tennessee on Labor Day and then Fox Sports West would be the Pac-12 equivalent. Jefferson Pilot was just a local, they would just do it and there would be the 1130 game. It was always the worst ACC game. It was always Vanderbilt and Arkansas or like Mississippi State South Carolina when they were having bad years and they had the worst, well, Dave Neal did it. He was good. But then they had Dave Rowe who was real bad. One day I'm going to show you some Dave Rowe and you're going to, you're not going to believe that used to happen. Anyway. Eyes like the Bino look sick. Looks cool. Yeah. Oh, Bino Cook was unbelievable. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, what we got here. Did the voicemails. Time to the games draft them. We'll get to Bob Chasning. Brandon maybe sued that voice and threw it with a smooth taste of a Reese's peanut butter cup. Well, they're not. I don't have a read form today, but yes, I will always do that because they are the official Candy partner of Arsenal sports. All right, games draft and we don't really do this to have a game draft. We simply do this to look at the week ahead and talk about the games on a Monday night. It's just a fun little mechanism to do it. All right. So who goes first? Liam, I never know. Your first because I picked album Georgia last week. I'm first. Yeah. And while you look for your game, I also want to remind you that your newest segment still needs to be on here tonight. The one with that guy that we work with. I don't recall it. Like if somebody wants to show up and do something fine, I don't know, but I don't really know what you're talking about. Fine. Okay. Yeah. That one. Good evening, Brandon and the people of this great country. My Tate of the Union this week is on the following. The no good dirty rotten SEC bias in college football. The gap between how the conference is portrayed and the actual strength of the conference has reached an all time wide margin. There has never been a period in my entire lifetime where the southeastern conference is on less of a mountaintop, but is getting more benefits than right now heading into week seven of the 2026 season. And I don't want to beat a dead horse and be called a homer here. But the big 10 has won not one, not two, but three straight national championships. So my question is this, why do losses for big 10 teams to other good big 10 teams to track so much more on their resume than losses for SEC teams? Alabama loses. They don't drop a spot. That's fine. Even though unranked Nebraska, by the way, an SEC team that has started 5 and 0 hasn't been unranked since 1943. But Nebraska takes the number five team in the country, the defending national champs to the last drive, and they're not even in the discussion. And Oregon, they lose to an undefeated ranked big 10 team by two points and they drop them out of the polls entirely all the way from 13. But LSU, they lose to a ranked team and they hang around and they continue to be a win that props up a top 10 Ole Miss team and they cause Kentucky to jump 11 spots just for beating them. Let's actually discuss a direct comparison of those ranked losses from each conference this weekend for LSU and for Oregon. Now don't get me wrong. Oregon has under achieved and the whole world is coming down on Dan landing this week. But with their two ranked losses to number 12 and number 18 in the country, they also have two ranked wins on the resume. And that Oregon resume is infinitely better than LSU who has two ranked losses as well, but has beaten absolutely no one. Not one team they have beaten received a vote in the AP poll this week. But because they're SEC, they're still in the mix. And Brandon, they have the 13th best odds to make the college football playoff right now. They are plus 170 on the Draft King Sports Book. And for what? What has LSU done this season except have those colors? Have that logo and have an SEC patch. I keep seeing this circle of parity graphic where they say that Georgia beat Bama and Bama beat Mississippi State and Mississippi State beat Missouri and Missouri beat Florida and Florida beat Ole Miss and Ole Miss beat LSU and even Oklahoma beating Texas. And the narrative is that anyone can beat anyone because everyone is good. But I would change that.
And I would say that the circle of parody is actually a circle of mediocrity, or more strongly worded, a circle of ass. Now don't get me wrong through this rant. Georgia is elite, and I would say that Bama is one of the top five teams right now that I truly think could win a national championship. And I think Ohio State gets this same treatment, so it's not a top of the top thing, but it's that next year. It's the contenders for the 12 team playoff spot. It's Iowa dropping six spots after losing to the number five team in the country by 17 at home. The very same week Mississippi State only dropped one spot after losing by 33 points to the number seven team at home. Bottom line, the SEC has good teams, but we as a college football media, the voters and the committees of the sport need to realize simply by opening our eyes that the bias they get is undeserved. And quite honestly, after the last three seasons, it is an insult to the great football being played elsewhere in the country. The floor is yours, Mr. Wall. I told Tate to do 90 seconds. That lasted forever. Why did Iowa drop six spots? Oh, I don't know, maybe because they're best win of the year to that point when they lost was fucking Michigan. And the same day Iowa was losing to Ohio State, Michigan was getting their doors blown off by Minnesota. That's why Iowa dropped. And the same day, the Mississippi State's best win, Missouri beat Florida. And we thought, oh, and that's why Missouri came back up. So Mississippi State's wins aged better than Iowa's own that day. They were voting. I got no problem with Iowa staying up high. I think they're really good, but that's why it happened. As far as comparing Oregon and LSU, let's examine the losses and how they've looked. LSU hasn't beaten anybody. I think you're exactly right about that. And I've been disappointed with the way they've played. That being said, their two losses are a fourth quarter loss and in the most emotional game you'll ever see at Ole Miss, the top ten team. They lost by one score, and then they lost on a two-point conversion at Kentucky, another ranked team the other day. And their losses, they've looked competent in Oregon's losses. They've looked in competent. They lost to Oklahoma State, the week after Oklahoma State lost to Tulsa. And the other day, they looked like the worst ranked team in the history of college football. So you can use your emotions. You can use your feelings to guide yourself through this world, or you can use your eyeballs and acknowledge that Oregon and LSU, if you look at them, don't look the same. I think next week's table of union needs just has to be here because I'd love to just have this argument with them. I just would just love to talk it out because I do think there's an element. There's certainly an element of SEC bias in the polls. I have no problem with that. I think Ole Miss is completely overrated right now. I think Missouri is completely overrated. But cry me a river if you're the fucking Big Ten. Cry me a river. You came in with all this, I know that you won the last three national titles, but Oregon's fallen on their face. Michigan's fallen on their face. Penn states fallen on their face. All these contenders are fallen on their face. And that makes the rest of the conference look bad when the name brands go down a little bit. That's reality of college football. That's not. I didn't do that. The SEC didn't do that. The Big Ten did that. There. I love, Tate, that I was starting to get agitated. I was starting to get it. Actually, how long can I know you couldn't be comfortable? Oh, I love it. By the way, I think Tate's a fucking star and he needs a voice in college football, and he's gonna get it and he's gonna be great and incredible. He can come on the show anytime he wants. And that's exactly what I wanted out of the Tate of the Union. It was amazing, but this Tate being the voice of the Big Ten, when the Big Ten just cries about SEC by. It's like Kurt Signati, right? Getting up there at Big Ten, media days and crying about SEC scheduling. Wow, at the same time, being the most cowardly scheduler in the country. That's kind of what we're doing right here with the Big Ten saying, "Oh, look at the bias in the rankings. Why isn't an organ over LSU?" Because organs look like they fucking suck half the time. That's what. And LSU hasn't looked like that. Whew. That was good. Tate. Well done, sir. Well done, Tate. That, that's early. If I thought you were getting angry. Matt says, Brandon, you're an SEC homer. Obviously, that's your take. I'm not an SEC homer. I hate the. I hate most of the teams in the SEC. I will tell you when an SEC team is overrated. I spent the entire offseason saying A&M's overrated, saying Ole Miss is overrated. I will tell you the truth. But some of this whining is just that whining. All right, you ready to do the game, Straff? Yes. Damn it. Tate, that was good. I gotta tell it. I gotta tell it. You don't take that was good. What? I said for you. What? I really didn't know if that was good or not. I thought you might get mad. No. You didn't like it? No, I did. I thought you might get mad at how long it was taking. I was watching you sitting out in me. I was getting worried. Oh, it was forever long. That's why it was getting worried. Yeah. It was, it was, it was, it was quite long. And I was getting worried that maybe you forgot about and didn't know that we were queuing that up there. Oh, that was stressful. Okay. First of all, first of, where are you? Why are you at Ohio State? I'm at engagement photos tonight. At Ohio State, you're, you're in the football field? Hold on. Yeah. You're doing your engagement photos in the football facility? Are we live on the show? No. Wait, hold on. Tate, you're supposed to, take your live on the show. Brand and World College football show. Oh, cool. I'm actually, I'm at a cab. What? Okay. Cool, cool, cool. Anyway, um, Tate, I just got your Tate of the Union. I watched it. I, I want to thank you for your contribution to the show. I thought it was amazing and incredible and well thought out. And the biggest load of crybaby bullshit I've ever seen in my entire life. Walker, what name one thing I was wrong about though? You're whining about Oregon and LSU's rankings being different. And I explained the reason Oregon has fallen and, and LSU has not, LSU has a loss in an emotional game at Ole Miss by one score and they lost by two point a version at Kentucky. They haven't spent most of the season look like refrigerated ass, whereas Oregon in their losses has looked like refrigerated ass hole. That's what they look like. But why, why, but now LSU beating LSU matters, Kentucky beating LSU jumped them up 11 spots. That's not right. LSU does not do. Tate, Tate, you see LA beating Oregon jumped them all the way up to number 12. Oh, nine spots. That's not 11 spots. It's it's also, eh, they are in the mix, they are in the mix, but they're, they're very much in the mix. They don't have that type of schedule coming home, but the reason they drop more than Mississippi State dropped that week was because that, that week I was number one win to that point in the season, Michigan lost a Minnesota and the Mississippi State's number one win to that point in the season beat Florida that day and the voters reacted to that. That's a very easy thing to see that happened. Yes, but I have said that I want 100% there's SEC bias. What you pointed out were not examples of that. And I think big 10 fans fall all over themselves to find SEC bias in situations where it's not really there. I wouldn't because I don't care. No, no, no, I wouldn't care because I like when SEC teams lose. I like that Oklahoma's already lost twice. I like when these teams collapse. I, I enjoyed when the big, when Ohio State won a national title, I was right there with you guys. I loved it. All right. Well, then I took my cap to you, Walker, but it's a fact of the matter is that I need to rest the middle tier of the big 10 to be boosted up a little bit and they deserve it. You're getting a remarkable Wi-Fi in that cabin in the woods. Is it really bad? All right. Hey, listen. Here's a thing. Now that I know that we're going back and forth, I'm not, I'm taking the gloves off next week. I'm not being so nice in my next state of the union. Tate, I say this, don't, don't take the first part of the sentence the wrong way. I don't think there will be a Tate of the union next week. I think I just, I think I just need you to show up and be ready to debate. I will block and see you on the roof. You ready? Yes, sir. I'll see you on Monday. I'll be ready to go. But I'm not taking the gloves off or I am taking the gloves off. No, I'm not taking the gloves off. Who do you think you're talking to? Number one, baby, but hey, the top of the mountain, I'm climbing. Yes. All right. Yes, as long as Mincey has another trip he has to make. All right. Get the fuck out. Yeah. You get the fuck out here. Thank you, Tate. Well, that was fun. How much you want, Betty, shows up with the gavel next week. You ready for the game, draft? Yes. This is a fun show right here. Yeah. It might be long, too. I apologize. I don't know if it's too long. Anyway, game draft, I got first pick. Yes. Ohio State of Indiana, best game of the week, by far, not even close. That's pick number one. Well done. Yeah. Give me. All right. At the turn, I'll take Notre Dame, BYU, big, hey, hey, Notre Dame plays some college football in 2026. Let's go. Notre Dame has arrived to the college football season. Oh, that's fun. And BYU, one environment they've got.
big time, prove it statement came for them. Are they for real? This is going to be this going to be fun. Either way, no matter what their result is, the other game I'll take is Mizzou oh miss. I know, I know that you talk about Mizzou and your sour on them and I'm not exactly high on them either. But you can't deny that Austin Simmons has been dealing week in, week out, and it's been one of the premier quarterbacks in this country. And his anticipation week to week is incredible. He's ball now. I'll take that game. Oh, and he's going up again to try that. Give me Oklahoma state at Houston. He didn't react. I'm not crazy. That came. Good pick. Good pick. All right. It scares me when you need my validation player. I really, I really do. Give me Mississippi State of LSU, although I don't like some things I've been hearing. Yeah, some of those things might have got tweeted by hopes. Important people in the biz that start with a P and their last name starts with a T. Almost sounds like Annville. What do you fucking say? Do you say it's for sure? I'm just I didn't really have time to glance because I'm doing the show, but source is Mississippi State. Cormorio Taylor status for the game in LSU Saturday is in flux. This is a decision on whether he'll play will be made later in the week. He's dealing with a foot injury from earlier this year that clearly impacted them against Alabama. Yes, turf toe. Yeah. Yeah. That's bad. And the brakes. Yeah. And we never get them. Anyway, that's my two picks, right? I picked I picked Oklahoma state Houston and Mississippi state LSU. Who's next for you? I'm going to take Kentucky, Oklahoma. There's there's a few things I love more in this sport right now than watching Will Stein coach and this big blue nation fan base completely embrace him and the great job that he's done and kind of sort of want to be a football school. They're doing an incredible job. They're going up against Oklahoma. It might be a dark horse to make the playoff in the eyes of some of the top college football personalities and the galaxy and my other pick will be Florida, Texas. Both teams coming off real tough losses Florida with two of them bounce back spots exciting game. Give me Wisconsin at UCLA. Nothing excites me more than watching Bob Jasmine coach college football. It's just shocking. You said somebody else. I said few things. Give me Alabama at Tennessee. I know that Tennessee's quarterback department that might have been a look at spot against Arkansas. They got to figure out quarterback but their defense since stand total dough with anybody. So give me Alabama at Tennessee. Alabama coming off the emotional loss. Kill him. Russell was was shown their levels to college football. He was fine, but he wasn't the Highsman trophy candidate ever. I thought he was going to be on Saturday night. So let's see if he bounces back against a very good defense on the road. Your next two picks, please. I have to hear right. I'm not tripping. No idea. Go. Okay. Our boys from Northwestern state play McNeese state. I believe they're still all in six. I swung the update there. I think you just have one pick because I think this is okay. That's that's why I thought Nebraska, Oregon late night, Saturday night. Both teams coming off the loss. Oregon has to win out to make the playoff. Dylan Raiola, you would think is going to be the quarterback here. Who knows, honestly. But if it is Dylan Raiola, we have the Raiola bull. There's going to be something nasty that happens in this game. I think there's going to be anamosti. Raiola is going to taunt Nebraska. This is must see TV even though Oregon's been eh. Yeah. Um, the games we didn't choose. And I wrote down seven more. Give me some good old fashioned rivalries right here in the middle of season. You got Kansas at Kansas state. You got North Carolina Duke. You got Florida State Miami. UNC annoyingly decent this year. I coined that last time. Maybe annoyingly competent. Duke kind of took the air out of the sales of this game by losing the other day. But you got that's that's kind of an interesting little game. Kansas Kansas state. Interesting. And then Florida State Miami. Does that turn into like Red River? Where doesn't matter what they are. Florida State is able to hang around. I don't know. Auburn, Georgia is another one. Auburn is not very good, but does Georgia have a let down after the trip to Alabama? Would be hard to have a let down considering they're playing Auburn, but is what it is. Penn State at Michigan didn't make the cut. Arizona State Texas Tech didn't make cut and Kansas at Baylor didn't make the cut on VASMU sneaky. Interesting. Yeah. All right. Well, we got Bob Chesney in just a minute. And then we got Billy Luchy to talk about his cesspool ability cesspool down their text acts. That's about 10 minutes and Bob Chesney is about 15 minutes, I would say. So there you go. Good show. Thanks for tape. Thanks for taking for showing up. Thanks everybody for watching. Again, the rhythm of this thing now is Saturday night recap show Monday night. Kind of look ahead. Look back and then Wednesday night. Look ahead. So that's where we are with this show. The viewzer again up about 80% year over year. The podcast is doing well on the podcast channels. Everything is doing well. Please subscribe to it. Please like. And that way every subscription we get sends Liam out on another trip to the UCLA play football. So as long as I get a thousand subscriptions this week, he can go to see UCLA play this weekend against Wisconsin. Thoughts? Thanks. Thanks, man. Yeah. All right. Here it is. Liam's man crush Bob Chesney. Not true. All right. Big win over the weekend. UCLA goes up to Oregon. I sent a correspondent out there. I sent my most red headed correspondent as I do to all the big games. And I don't really like a couple of things that are going on here. But first, let me welcome in coach Bob Chesney from UCLA football coach. Thank you for being on the brand of Walker College football show. Yeah. Thanks for having me. But blessed to be here. Excited to get a chance to sit down with you guys for a little bit. Well, here's my problem. I've done a lot of interviews of coaches, media personalities, fans. And Liam Blutman, my co-host has never sat in on these interviews ever not one time. And here he sits for some reason watching you. So I guess what I'll ask you, coaches. I know you're undefeated and rank number 12. How important has Liam Blutman been to this run so far? Oh, it's it's it's monumental. I think the whole thing might just come down to him. He's got a lot of work to do though in the coming weeks. So I'm excited for him to continue to carry his weight. Yeah, no kidding. He's got a lot of work to do here, but he passes it off so he can go out there and galvan on the West Coast and win football games. I'm not jealous. I'm not jealous. I'm just saying he gets to go win football games. How did feel, coach? Because I know you're building this thing. First year, you've gotten several big wins already, but you go on the road to a place that nobody goes to win at. And I don't care. You know, Oregon's not off the start. They thought they would be, but nobody wins at Alton Stadium and you guys went up there and did it. When when clock red zeroes, how did that feel? Yeah, well, it came down to the very wire there when the clock finally did read zeroes because they were on their lateral play there and and you know, we finally got the ball on the ground and we're able to end it, but it was great. It was a great feeling for our fans, a great feeling for, you know, our alums, great feeling for our players, great feeling for the coaches that invest so much of their time and and sacrifice so much of their family time and and great feeling for the families as well. But in the end, we didn't go up, they're thinking that we were just going there to compete. We were going there to win. So as much as it is a situation where we were really excited about it, you know, I think there was, we had an expectation that we would be able to win there as well. You know, when our team loses their quarterback in the middle of a game, the win can go out of the sales sometimes. I've seen a couple of games where you guys, you know, Niko's come out and then you guys just keep on rolling. How are you able to attribute that where you really are able to fight through this stuff? Yeah, well, I think the best teams don't avoid adversity, right? They respond to adversity and they do it without hesitation and they do it together. And I think that is exactly what our guys did. And, you know, there's a very good understanding of the next man up mentality within this program. The light is shine on a lot of different people, a lot of different ways this year that had not expected, you know, to have that light shine on them. And they continue to come through each and every week. There's examples of it every single week. And this one happens to be at the quarterback position. And I like our resolve. I like our fight. And I like our ability to attack adversity and not be crippled by it. When did you know this group was like getting it? Was it like it? Was it August? Was it the off season? Was it like your third or fourth game? Was it your first game? When did you know? All right, this is working right now. Yeah. So I think what happens is you assemble a group first, right? That's that we have 60 some new guys on this team. And we assembled this group. But we did it, you know, and we're very selective with the personalities, the character, and the type of people we're bringing into this program. Not just their football ability, their height, their weight, their speed. That all comes into it. But ultimately, who they were as people. So you knew you had a chance right from the beginning. I think we got into the winch of the conditioning and watch them compete and watch them accept living in this world of constant competition. You thought you had a chance. And then when you got a little bit further into preseason camp and watch these guys really get after it, you thought, man, we might be talented enough to do something here. The thing is you just didn't know what the rest of the league had at that moment in time, especially for me when there's so many new players that join each team every single year. So it was a matter of, all right, I think we got something. But at the same point in time, I know it feels right. But what are we about to walk
into and face within this league. - I'm rather curious about how you do that, because I've had other coaches tell me, you know, it's not about the, or the A football ability is very important, but it's about the characters, about the personalities, about making sure they fit inside our family. I've heard that. I guess what I want to ask you is, how do you make sure you get that right? Do you see it when you watch them play in high school? Do you see it when you watch them play with their teammates? Do you see it when you sit down in their living room? When do you see it and how do you know? - Yeah, well, you want to see it in all those places. I think it first starts with their film. Is that you're looking for a productive player, but you're also looking to say, man, I could feel this kid through the screen. He plays this game the right way. He's passionate about it. And I'm not saying, you know, with some elaborate celebration dance that he thought of, and, you know, that type of thing. I'm talking about true, like passion, that you could see on film. It starts there. Then you sit down with a kid and you figure it out. Like does he really love football? Does he really love life? Is he, you know, happy, you know, every single day to just be alive and be part of this world we get to live in? Like those are the questions that you're trying to figure out because you know what type of environment you're going to place them in when they get here. And they're going to have to compete every single day, right? They cannot complain. They have to just compete. They are going to be held to a high standard from their teammates and they're going to be asked to give everything they got every single day because it's not just what we do. It's how we do it. And then you want to look a little further and do some character checks on them as well, not just what you saw. But then I love watching them and how they interact with their family. If there's a younger brother or sister here or a grandmother or grandfather that can't get around as quickly, are they patient with them? Do they give their parents or guardians room to speak or is it only about them? You know, those are the questions that you really are looking at every single aspect of that to figure out is this a guy that you want to spend a lot of hours with over the next 365 days. - I was watching the broadcast the other day and this came up, the great Charles Davis said it. He said just, you know, you get out there and you can't believe this guy's practices. You can't believe how awesome it is. I've seen Bill Simmons say he's been to practice and it's amazing. Mike Cadek and Liam Blutman here were in the summer they're saying, oh my God, you got to go to one of these practices. Two questions, A, what makes your practices so magical and B, how come I'm the only media member in America who hasn't been invited to them? - Oh, you're invited. That is an open invitation. Any time you want to come out here, make Liam stay home and do some work next time and you come out here. The weather will be nice. Everything will be perfect for him. You don't do a little bit over there. But ultimately, it's just, we try to put them in as stressful environments as we can. We try to compete, we keep score. There's winners and losers, you know, and then they understand in that process that the leading cause of success is well-managed failure. And then the leading cause of failure is mismanaging the successes that you might have had. But those are things that are on display every single day and we keep score. There's a big scoreboard. There's consequences for winning and losing and I think overall, you know, those are the things to me that we just don't relent on. It's every single day process that these guys have to limp through and not only the guys are out there competing, but the guys on the sideline, they have to be engaged and they have to be part of this. And we're only out there for an hour and 45 minutes or so. And those hour and 45 that we're out there for, it's got to be electric. - To me, I watch you on film and you guys are just a run through your face team. Whoever the opponent is doesn't matter if it's a organ doesn't matter, we're going to try to run through your face. We're going to try to do that to you. How tough is it to instill that in one off season in a program because, you know, I'm not trying to insult anybody, but in my lifetime, I can't remember UCLA being a bully ball. I'm going to run through your team. And now here we are October, your four, five, six games in. And you've already kind of instilled that. How do you do that? - Well, I think that it starts with, again, the right people, obviously. The human element's always going to ring number one. I think that, you know, Coach Kennedy and Coach Smith sit in that room and drop unbelievable plays with, you know, great leverage and running backs on their standing where this ball's got to hit. And then, you know, you loosen it all back up again with the play action and the boot game and things like that so that you just can't load up the box and do, you know, what they need to do to stop the runs. And then, you know, running backs have a little success. I get excited because I was the one that sprung the block for that running back on that touchdown and whether I'm a tight end or a receiver or a guard or a tackle. And then we celebrate the hell out of those people in every single meeting. So when Wayne Knight scores a touchdown or a jet or woods scores a touchdown, you know, the first thing we'll do is be like, here it is. Number two, you came down here and cracked this safety. This is your touchdown just as much as his. And I think the running backs do a really good job as well of making sure that our guys understand that, you know, that they know they didn't get in that end zone by themselves. So I think it's creating this culture and just, you know, giving credit where credit is due. And I think if you want to behave here to be repeated, you celebrate it and you celebrate it publicly. And I think that is something that we've had a success with as the entire year has gone on so far. So there's a lot of, you know, greatness that's coming out of this run game, but it is because everybody is involved on doing their part. - Huh, maybe I should reinstill and Liam every day. How much I appreciate him on the podcast. Tell him he's doing a good job. - No, I'm sorry. - I mean, he might work. If he's coming up really short every single day right now, try, maybe that's just a little different tactic that you could come into it. - Does Wayne Knight, the football player, know who Wayne Knight the TV actor is? (laughs) - I think he does at this stage, yep. And we might have a, yep, we'll see someday. You might even get him a stop at. - You know, I know you deflected credit from Wayne Knight too to your offensive line to everybody blocking and everything, but let's talk about him for a second. This is a guy that just comes over. You know, he has his big breakthrough last year, J.M.U. 1300 yards, I think. And now you guys go out out there to the Big Ten and he just hits the ground running. How and why? I mean, what makes him so good? - Yeah, I don't mean to deflect any credit from him, but it does take a team, obviously. But that's more of what he would do. I think he should be in a conversation or something even bigger. This kid, he plays as hard as anybody that you're gonna meet. He is patient, he keeps his pads down, he can catch the ball out of the back field. He can accelerate and get to full speed within two or three steps. Arm tackles usually don't work against him. And when it's time to block for somebody else or put his pads down, he does that as well. So I just think that he's a complete running back. I get his size as what it is. He can't control that. All he can control is the production out on the field. And his process and how hard he plays and he does exactly that every single week. - Your dad, your dad right before the show, he got on there after he was gonna do the interview. I think the other day, he told Liam, if we ever mess up or if we ever lose, you have my permission to go after us. And I was like, all right, your dad's just around and fun, loving and incredible. Just what's that like? I mean, that seems like just the coolest atmosphere imaginable. - Yeah, it's cool. It's cool. I grew up in this profession where he was my high school coach, my grandfather, my uncle, we're on that staff. Their brother-in-law was the athletic director at the school that we were at in high school. So I saw this as a family affair, the whole way through. I never saw it as anything other than that. I didn't even know this was a profession. I thought it was our way of life. And that ultimately, everybody in the community was involved in it. So you have a chance to relive that and a chance to do that here. I thought back to so many of my father's teams and thought about what made the great ones great. And it was usually filled with great people that were committed to a common cause and involved other people and never devalued anyone in the entire organization, whether it be a custodian or whether it be the athletic director or the president of the school, like every alignment and the belief in each other is what's there. So that's what he represents ultimately is that. Is that this is truly family? It's easy to say family, but very few people even allow women and children in this building or your grandfather's or whatever it might be. Where for me, this is truly family. I love looking out there out on our patio where people are having lunch and seeing coaches with their kids out there and their wives out there. That's really important to me. And I think that's what sets this program apart. Two last questions. I know your time is very valuable. I appreciate you. Number one is you're facing adversity with the quarterback situation right now. It looks like reports came out today. How you handle that going forward? How much do you believe in your guys? And what does it look like? Yeah, I believe in everybody. I think that our job is, if anybody is injured, our job is to support them the best way that we possibly can at the same time prepare the others. And that's really what it's about is preparing and understanding that next man up mentality. Obviously, Nico has one more meeting tonight and one more appointment tonight that will, nothing is solidified just yet. But ultimately, it certainly looks like it's leaning one way. But the time will tell here when we get the final word on that. So I know a lot of people are reporting a lot of things, but that's not nothing is official yet until he has that final meeting. But if that happens that way, then obviously our job is to support him as much as we possibly can and he to support the team. And at the same exact point in time, trusting in the process and trusting in the other people that we brought in here to do their job. And I know that they'll do that. Last question, I know we're talking today. I know you're number 12, I know you speak to Oregon, but the race, it's a long race. It's a long season. And how do you finish this race? How do you complete this race? How do you keep going week to week and get to where you ultimately want to go? Yeah, we're not like trying to build a team that occasionally competes well and ends up with some sort of outside recognition. That's not what we're doing here at all. And that's a big part of what we're talking to our team about is that we're in a good spot right now. But we have to go from good to great. And we have to do that over these next couple of weeks. And we eventually have to try to go from great to elite. So it's the idea of knowing that after a game like Oregon, we won because of and being able to identify the things of why we won. And then in spite of an understanding that we won in spite of certain things that we did. And you want to try to clear that column from the in spite as much as you possibly can and keep putting it back into the because of column. And but you can understand every win. It isn't always pretty. And every loss isn't always terrible at the same point in time. So what do you do? You go back to the work. And you just keep focusing back on the work. We understand what the work is. We understand what our standards are.
We said our we understand how we're going to hold each other accountable every single day every single day And we have to just continue to Advance that and amplify that on a day-to-day basis and not allow us to be in a place where we think whatever we did Yes, or it was good enough because it's not not for the journey that we're on and not for the people that we're gonna Expect to step up at certain moments Whatever they did yesterday is not enough and we have to be better today than we were yesterday And if we could hold to that mantra every single day, we're gonna find ourselves in a good place. Wow. Okay. Yeah, that's a well-said Liam, you can give the thumbs up now. I think I passed all your tests with the questions Anyway, coach, I appreciate you being here. Thank you very much for your time and good luck the rest of the way That's all Liam nothing for Liam His brother's the producer and his brother didn't want him to have a spotlight. Well, you know A lot of times in college football we break down the drives and the plays and the players and the coaches, but sometimes we break down What's the best word for that bullshit and just some prime grade A bullshit happened this week Just a coach with an unforced air made a mistake said something shouldn't have said and immediately the whole internet was like, what? And I love it that is somebody I know and I love it is somebody You want to talk about somebody who's built something this this text axe man Billy luchia text axe I'm bringing him in now. Obviously Mike Elko said what he said the other day said he doesn't like Billy's cesspool after they lost 27 six to Missouri and then today press conference he publicly walked it back But anyway, Billy just come in here. Let's let's let's talk about this. Yeah, let's talk about it. What's up, Billy? How crazy is today, Ben? I know the last 48 hours are your text your phone everything had to be blown up Yeah, it's been crazy Brandon like from from like some of you guys in that building to Friends from like elementary school junior high that didn't even go to A&M to obviously a bunch of former players and Basically everybody you know, you know you're sitting there Family members like what the hell but it's been crazy and it's been really crazy because I was trying to just go about my weekend I don't I don't care that much like I was offended by it For about 10 minutes, and then I thought about kind of what was really being said I was like it's whatever and I was more concerned with like how the fans were gonna react because I knew that and rightfully so they were gonna feel like The direct target there so I I don't think it was that many people like I had somebody text me today like man I'm glad you blah blah blah handled it because you don't mess with luchia and I'm like it's not that it wasn't that it was the fans like If it would have been just me and he would have actually meant it straight at me I think everybody would have kind of just got a laugh about it and been like oh fight It was about so many of the fans, you know, and that's what that's what snowball did, but yeah, it's been it's been berserk You know and that's where the unforced error comes in right like yeah, he was mad. They lost He's he's spiraling this year the team spiraling like everybody goes through it like every every team goes through it every now and then unless you're a Georgia Ohio state and you just Love it, but everybody goes through it and he was he was in the midst of he got to beat by 21 points on the road And he said something he shouldn't have said and and and and I know what I believe I can interpret him saying that meaning boy I love 99.5% of his fan base. I there's a 0.5% that's aggressively loud online that I should handle and he He used your site and your people to represent that but your site is much bigger and represents way more people than that And and like I said earlier to somebody some of the very top I mean, they all it's the highest level donor to the future highest level donor to the Rank and file fan to the current students. They're all on there. They take a lot of pride They give a lot of their time their energy their passion and so yeah, like you said it was a really unforced error and I know we know coaches hate message boards. They hate social media I happen to know that Mike Elko likes tech sags, and I think he's Probably on it fairly regularly at times and and you know obviously all these coaches have families and friends and you know when they get jobs at A&M Assistance or otherwise families that you know how it goes in the message boards world But you just you can't win that battle and you certainly can't win that in the press conference setting because you don't have enough time to Really like micro focus who you're talking about, you know, there's no time for that So you make one statement in frustration, and yeah, you know, they've all been there done that but I do think it's worth noting Brandon Mike Elko hasn't Had this type of adversity before he's a young head coach. He's he's in his fifth year as a head coach It hasn't been like he's never been in this position where I think he's really scrambling for answers They're very difficult for him to come by in season and you did see that moment of like very real frustration where he did in fact, you know make a really bad misstep and It's fine to try to walk it back, but I just think it's good that he kind of at least addressed it and closed the door He didn't have to say my name. I told him I appreciated it But he certainly did not have to do that. Well, you're very mature and and take it and stride and and all that shit now Somebody like me. Somebody like me. I know. Somebody like me, Billy, but anyway, forget about your response because you're always gonna take it take it the right way But do you think today's press conference and in the coming days that he'll be able to how fractured is the fanbase? How pissed off is the band base and can he put the toothpaste back in the tube with this thing? Oh man, good question. You the answer is yes, but it's it's just going to be directly related when I get it a lot harder and yeah But here's a deal Brandon you not talked about it this morning, and this is part of why like Let's go back to you this offseason What you were saying about a and M you have your magical way of saying it because you want to enrage every cesspool When given the chance and when you feel it's justified, right? That's what people don't get about you That's your way of saying I don't like their lines of scrimmage I don't trust the you said he's good. He's not great. You did not trash Marcel And then for those reasons and you looked at the schedule Well, guess what the hard part of that schedule is coming up in the second half of it I thought a and M needed to be Five and one or six and oh at this point to have a look at the playoffs. That's how tough that schedule is now You tell me where the win is is it at South Carolina that just beat Floor it on the road is it is it at home against Tennessee that's five and one is it maybe it's that one is it at OU when when a name can't score on Missouri or LSU and they're gonna go put up. So it's gonna be hard for him This season because I think it's going to get worse before it gets better and then it's just gonna depend on on what kind of decisions my cocoa makes As the season ends and we're talking about quarterback Coordinators and portal so well, that's the beautiful part of it, right? This is all they're all mad. They're all angry whether you finish four and eight five and seven six and six doesn't matter They're gonna be angry until that magical day in January when they announce a transfer over three million dollar quarterback And then everything's fine again. So like that's that's the real it the reality of the situation And I'll thank you sir not to give away the recipe of me Enraging all the cesspools. I'll thank you to keep that in house, please People don't realize Brandon Walker's a good dude as much as he fucking hates to have that said he's question So next question is You kind of Slow-fitted it there and you kind of walked around it I am willing I said I don't want this morning. You didn't quite take up my invitation I'm willing to accept an apology on behalf of Texas A&M for all the things that were said too and about me This offseason when I correctly said what was about to happen. So the floor is yours Billy As far as apology goes I'd have to see your DMs to know what level of guilt I feel or not guilt but just You know representing a group like I'd have to see those DMs. I can't imagine what they are on a daily basis No, but you know just real talk like dude like I was worried that you would be right not in your I said this a million times when they were in that top 10 and people were getting super defensive. I said [BLANK_AUDIO]
It's understandable that they have a target when you look at that list. I said, A&M will be the one team. I did not think it would be like this. I don't know if you did. What did you think? - I thought, I thought 11-4 was a problem. - 11-1 last year. I thought 7-5-8-4 this year. I thought, I certainly didn't think, who have you played so far? I certainly didn't think Kentucky was coming in there. Year one to Kyle Field and winning, I didn't think. Yeah, I didn't think, yeah, well, my sorry, he's weird. - It was weird though, they lost 11, they replaced 11 starters on defense. And there was a top 10 defense last year. That's why I saw that one and said, I think they'll go there and get that one. If they're the team, I think they are. Which to me, Brandon was, here's what my thought. Top 15 team and a playoff contender as we enter November. I thought that was realistic and reasonable. I think that's fair. I didn't think the bottom would fall out the way it's falling out as quickly as it would. Now, there's also, I think he might be a quarterback, change away from at least salvaging a little bit of respect with it, but that's not my battle to fight. That's everybody else's battle to fight. But anyway, what you pointed out was, and Elko talked about the tech sags in the test pool. What I've learned in this job is every single fan base across the country is the exact same. There's no difference in Oklahoma and Texas A&M and Florida State. There's no difference. You're going to have 90% of the people are reasonable and just want their team to win. Five percent are the super optimistic. Nothing, you don't do ever say anything about my coach. Even when he's 2 and 10 and five percent are the super negative fuck you for ever thinking we're, and it's that 90%. And that's, and the fact that he was going after the five percent negative and caught the 90% rational is what got him in trouble. But for sure, I'm not going to cry for Mike Elko. He's making way more money than I am. And me too, by the way, Casey was my last question. I don't want to get in your business. And I certainly never would. But can you just tell me right now how much money you make on a year-to-year basis for techs.com? Somebody keeps tweeting at me with, I guess they Googled my net worth. And I'm like, I've been in the same house for like 16 years. I live by myself with my dog. I've got no, like, so yeah, I probably save up a lot of money. But it's not. It's funny, Brandon. When you do what I do, speaking of websites and fan sites, there are people that think that I am on the level of a Dave Portland. Well, he has screwed it up for all of us with this. Well, and the only thing similar to Dave and I is we both started out in print publications. And we both, we both Casey Smith's boss at one point. That's where it ends. He lives in Nantucket. I've visited Nantucket. That's it. But no, the other people think, oh, that's so cute. You own a website. So that's adorable. So to answer your question, it's somewhere in between. Hopefully I'm pulling more than Ben Mints for all his stuff there. I have such a good, mincey story for you that I just, I'll just leave it at this as a good one. When they did that road trip, you know, the traffic control road trip. Yes. And he made the, you know, the comments that he was, he had asked me to acquire tickets to an Astros game. And I had gotten them because he was going to do Houston and then go to Louisville, Ole Miss, right? Sure, sure. So I get tickets and then he added somebody at the end. So I said, okay, let me go back to this guy. I have to take it from four tickets to six now. It was Astros white socks. And then I get to call, hey, I don't think I'm going to be able to make it. I think I pissed off day and I better be back in Chicago. I'm like, what about the six tickets and the, your buddy that was coming? So I mean, it was very easy to fill those spots. But I thought about you in a big cat and the, and the yak when it happened. And I was like, this is just, this goes right into like, content for them. He's one of our special boys of which we have many, of which we have many. Oh, I will say that I always can tell when you're coming to town because Mincey shows up to the office early because he knows you will buy him a meal. Oh, yeah, yeah. And probably pick him up in my Uber. Yeah, he's the best. Anyway, Billy, let's get together. If the Aggies went one coming down the stretch or you guys land that quarterback, let's get together sometime soon and do it again. I might be a little Chicago for you don't want. I'll come on when they get Camario Taylor B. All right, thanks very much to miss Lucy. That cesspool piece of shit. [BLANK_AUDIO]
