Brad Widdup - Savvy Hallie Won't Just Make up the Numbers in the Everest

Brad Widdup joined the program to discuss Savvy Hallie's upcoming start in The Everest. He confirmed the mare has recovered well from a galloping injury suffered during her Sirroco Stakes victory and has been tracking toward the race for some time. Despite finishing second on Saturday while carrying three kilograms above her winning weight, Widdup believes she can improve further and be competitive. He acknowledged Caden Rise as a serious threat, expecting that horse to improve from his trial just as he did last year. Zach Lloyd has been secured to ride Savvy Hallie after Nash Rawiller went elsewhere, and Widdup praised Lloyd's rising career. He noted the mare is straightforward and does not need a preparatory gallop from her new jockey. He expressed gratitude to loyal owners BK Racing and Mulberry, noting the emotional significance of the race given Benny's mother's illness.

Speaker 1Speaking of the Tab Everest, well Brad Buddha, he's going to the mountain again. He joins us on the line as our first guest this morning. Morning, Brad. Hey, Dave. How's your morning been, mate? Good. When did you get the call or when did they let you know at Mulberry that, mate, we're going to put Savvy Hallie in the Everest?
Speaker 2Oh, look, it's been on the radar for a while, but obviously she had to perform and span her in the works first up, but she's bounced back good from there. So it's sort of, you know, we've had it in there for the whole time. You know, obviously having Caden Rise in the race has always put a few people off, but look, you know, our job now is just to have her as good as we can for the race and she seems to be tracking really well. So, you know, she's turned it around and she's in good order.
Speaker 1In regards to her terrific second attempt on Saturday, and you've said she was, you know, three kilos above her Scirocco Stakes winning weight, you know, how much improvement do you think we'll see from her? And what did you make of that trial yesterday? Are you not scared of him?
Speaker 2Oh, I'm scared of him. He's this. Look, he's. He's very good. I think the same thing happened last year. You know, he. Yeah, look, he's obviously very good. I'm not denying that. I've seen what he did last year sort of thing with apparently not being right. So he's. I'm imagining, look, they know him very well and he's going to improve out of that trial and it'll be the same thing as last year. I'd imagine come race day he's going to be. Right to go. But look, you know, that's what we're up against.
Speaker 1So Nash rides her in the Everest? No, Nash is.
Speaker 2No, no, he's jumped. He's jumped. You had to bring that up, didn't you? But, no, we're lucky enough to get Zach Lloyd. So, you know, I don't think anyone's riding any better than him. You know, he's. You know, his career's just. He's just taken off and he's, you know, rode a heap of winners the other day and he's, you know, look, it was enormous to be able to secure him. So, look, disappointing Nash went elsewhere, but, you know, I think we've got a very good replacement.
Speaker 1Yeah, 100%. The. Will that. Did you try and get Zach out to give her a gallop?
Speaker 2Oh, look. I normally don't like to. I like to just use the jockey's race day and keep my riders on them at home like they know them. You know, we may. I may put him on for. I don't think I'll put him on for a main gallop. I just. I may leave him somewhere. But, look, you know, he's an ultimate professional. Zach can. He's ridden all over the world at this stage. He's ridden all over the world at this stage of his career and, yeah, I don't think he needs to be coming out and riding to work, but, look, I'll have a think about it.
Speaker 1OK. I only ask if she's. Is she quirky? Does he need to sit on her before and is she pretty straightforward?
Speaker 2No, no, no. She's very straightforward. Very straightforward. You look. You know, with her being. You mentioned about her being heavier the other day. A lot of people might know she got galloped on when she won the Scirocco, so we had to give her a quiet week. And, you know, three weeks between runs and, yeah, she's done a terrific job there. I just think, you know, we can't screw her down a little bit more and I'm sure, you know, she's not going to find five lengths, but, you know, I'm sure she can be competitive. We've ran and attempted to close the margin over 1,400. You know, she's our best chance in the race at the moment, I'd imagine. There was a couple of nice trials there yesterday in Cargill, the Risings trial as well for Jolly Star and Headwall, both trials really well. So, look, it's going to be a very competitive race and then you've got Bjorn's horse in the race. I'm sure she'll be primed up to take him on early, so it's going to be very interesting.
Speaker 1Now, Brad, you've got three in today on the Kenzo. We'll start with Bondi Blossom, Chad Schofield, to ride. You've got gate turbo 1,400 and it was a nice fourth last time out at Newcastle.
Speaker 2Yeah, look, I think she'll probably need another run to get to her best. You know, Philly's in there is great today. I just thought it'd be a nice second up run for her and hopefully we can head out to a mile at her next start, but I dare say she'd need the run today.
Speaker 1What about your next runner, which is a sneaky choice, Tommy Berry, to ride. This is in the 1,800 metre race. You've drawn another soft gate.
Speaker 2Yeah. A little bit disappointing last start. She seems fine. Hopefully she can bounce back and run up to a run at Warwick Farm. Tommy's rode her a bit, so it's good to have him back on her and, yeah, hopefully she can just bounce back after a disappointing run. She's normally pretty honest and I was a little bit disappointed in the last run, but, look, she seems fine and, yeah, I think if she bounces back, she'll be running really well.
Speaker 1And then you've got Money, Money team going around too. You've got Zach Lloyd on board of this. A couple of trials and Zach trialled at Hawkesbury.
Speaker 2Yeah, I'll tell you about the trials. He was disappointing the other day. He was slow away and then he did everything wrong. I was sort of, the horse was, you know, up to probably this preparation, his last couple of last preparations. He's been very consistent and, so, look, I'll tell you about the trials. Gave him a good hit out there. Zach rode him. He was happy enough to stay on and we'll try to get him back. We'll try and ride him positive today. Look, I haven't notified the stewards yet, but I think I've still got a bit of time there to let them know, but, yeah, I'd like to sort of bounce him, put him on the speed today if I can.
Speaker 1Okay. So, there's your three. What's your best chance of possibly jagging a winner today on the Kenzo?
Speaker 2Oh, look, a tough day. I think, look, probably the last two, you know, but they've both got to bounce back, so it's not always easy to turn around. I think it's going to be a tough day. I think it's going to be a tough day for them, but they're in good order, so, you know, hopefully they can.
Speaker 1Local game for you tomorrow where you've got two at Hawkesbury, Darn Saga and the Biv going around. Chad to ride both?
Speaker 2Yeah, Darn Saga, he's first up. Looks like we've found a nice enough race for him, like he probably has to do something tomorrow or he might be somewhere else, but, yeah, look, I think we've found a race where he should be competitive there. The Biv, she won on returning and I was happy enough to run the other day, so, look, she's drawn six of eight, I think. She's got good speed, so, yeah, look, we found a solid race there the other day. I knew it was always going to be hard for her, but, you know, hopefully tomorrow it looks a good filly to me, 64 for her, so hopefully she can bounce back.
Speaker 1And any other noms at all for, I see, Kemba Sasson, Saturday, blue-eyed Bridget, so a quiet weekend on the cards for you.
Speaker 2Yeah, we have a quiet weekend. Yeah, she ran well first up, so hopefully she can keep going on with it, but, you know, obviously the acceptances aren't yet, so I can't sort of say too much there, but, yeah, she's in good order and ran well first up.
Speaker 1Gee, what does B-Widop do on a quiet weekend with the family?
Speaker 2Oh, they're all flying the coop now, mate. They do their own thing, but, yeah, just racehorses. Do you watch the races when you sit there and watch the races? Oh, yeah, of course, no. It's a great time of year, and, yeah, it's disappointing not to have runners, obviously, but it is what it is, but, you know, it's a fantastic time of the year for racing with all the footy codes stopped and we can enjoy racing a bit.
Speaker 1Yeah, I love it. All right, mate, well, good luck and well done. Well, well done, firstly, getting that mare into the race. That's exciting for you and the stable and the team because, you know, there's two loyal sets of owners that you go on the races with for the Team Everest.
Speaker 2Yeah, look, that is true. Like, BK Racing have been with me from day one and Benny's mum's not well at the moment, so, hopefully, we can get a lift there with her racing well, and, obviously, Mike, I can't say enough about Mike Regg and Mulberry, so, you know, they're massive supporters and I'd be in trouble if I didn't have them, so, yeah, it's great to sort of be teaming up with both of them and, you know, hopefully, we can, we can get in the money for them. Good stuff. Appreciate it, mate. Thanks, Brad. Ta.
