We talk about our favorite things in the world, movies and movie news and all that good stuff. Joining me today on this Friday, he's going to go see four movies today. Writer, director, producer, Mr. Robert Meyer Burnett. Robert, how you doing today, sir? Second weekend in a row, John. I will have seen eight movies in the last eight days. Oh, that's nice. I've done four, but I've never done four in one day. So you got me on that. Also joining us, of course, coming to us from Burbank, California, our technical director, John Campion. That's right, guys. It's Friday. We made it. And John, you're about to hit the road, huh? Well, I'm not. Oh, wait, what? Yeah, a little bit of an announcement to make to everybody. So. Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to, like, steal your. No, actually, it was a very good setup, actually. It's a very good setup. As many of you know, I was about to leave today to go on to the next leg of the movie meetup tour. I was going to hit Nashville and Pittsburgh, Charlotte and Atlanta. I was also going to hit St. Louis, but something came up that made that impossible for now. I'll try to get to St. Louis at some time. However, the movie meetup tour has been postponed. The other day in the process of getting Colossus, that's my camper van ready for the trip, a problem arose, not with the van itself, but with one of the technology components, a third party technology component that a lot of RVs and camper vans use. And they it was they even got me on the phone with the owner of the company to try to walk me through fixing it. Couldn't fix it. They literally sent out a technician from two hours away to come to my house last night to try to fix it, and they couldn't fix it. And so I will not. Be able. I won't make it to the cities. I won't make it. So I am going to this. And the final decision came down today that it wasn't until this morning that it became final that I'm not going to be able to make it. So we are canceling this leg of the movie meetup tour. Now, I really shouldn't say cancel. I really should say postpone. We will get around to doing Nashville and Pittsburgh and Charlotte and Atlanta. St. Louis and Houston and some other cities, too, at some point. And Canada, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Canada, where the lake is still called Lake Ontario, no matter what pussy boy fuck toys in your White House right now. Little Trumple Foreskin and his micro penis. You got to go to Winnipeg, dude. Winnipeg. Oh, at the Forks. Yeah, I'll definitely stop at Winnipeg at the Forks and make my way through there. Somebody in the lodge in St. Dallas. You got to go to Banana Fest. We did Dallas. Already did Dallas. We already stopped and did our movie meetup in Dallas. So I'll put this up in the socials a little bit later as well. But yeah, we'll not be making the movie tour date. So if you are one of the people, and I already saw that a lot of these theaters were already half sold out after only 24 hours, you go to the movies or go and cancel your tickets. All right, guys, with that unfortunate stuff down and out of the way, let's get things going with some movie news here, shall we? And we're going to start off with this. You know, one of the movies that I was really fascinated about coming out of CinemaCon and after its first trailer debuted online was this new Andrew Garfield movie being directed by Paul Greengrass, who I love him. And it's called The Uprising. And it's like meant to be about the Peasants Revolt, the 1381 Peasants Revolt, right? And not a lot of people talking about it, granted, but it just looked really good. The trailer is great. Oh, the trailer was great. The previews they showed it, they showed to us at CinemaCon were fantastic and wonderful. A great period piece, kind of in the vein of a Braveheart, but less sensationalized sort of thing. You know, so I've been really excited about it. I've been really excited about it. Well, hold on a second. I thought the movie was called The Uprising, but apparently two weeks before the debut of the movie, they've changed the title of The Uprising. If you go to their social media post, it now is advertising The Uprising official X channel is now calling it Robin Hood. Brave Sir Robin. Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin. All of a sudden, this is a Robin Hood movie. Now, I'm not going to pretend that I am, you know, one of the world's foremost history experts, especially on, you know, I'm Canadian, not so up on exact English history. But I'm pretty sure Robin Hood was not a part of the 1381 English peasants revolt. Time travel. And I'm like, time travel. So crates. I, I'm, I'm, wait, what? This is all of a sudden out of nowhere, like a Randy Orton RKO. All of a sudden, this is all of a sudden, this is all of a sudden, this is all of a sudden, this is all of a sudden. I, now look, here's the thing. I don't know how I would have responded to this if I was just sitting in the theater. And I think the character's name is just like the farmer. I think that in, I think the IMDb listing is just calling him like the farmer or the threshman or something like that. Right. He's just this no name peasant guy who happened. He says, you know, we're not going to take it anymore. You know, to quote. Uh, the great eighties hits. We're not going to take it by the great philosopher twisted sister. Yeah. What are you going to do with your life? Many people don't understand that reference and that's perfectly fine. Uh, but if guys, if we had gotten to the end of this, if I'm sitting in the movie theater and I'm watching this movie and it's a Paul Greengrass movie, which means it's probably going to be good. And I like, I'm bringing all of a sudden at the end, uh, like, what should we call you, sir? Call me Robin of the hood. I would've gone. I don't know. Maybe I would've thought, wow. I don't know, but I do know this right now. I think it's stupid right now. This seems really stupid. Like you had this incredible looking movie that I've been chomping at the bit to go see. And with two weeks to go, just two weeks to go until it comes out, you decide out of nowhere on your social media, to the rich, he was an outlaw to the people. He was a hero. Witness the rise of Robin hood in the uprising only in theaters, September 11th. And I, I, every once in a while I have to go, what was the thinking process behind this? Like I, first of all, it's questionable that you even made this a Robin hood movie in the first place. Secondly, it doubles the confoundment that you've decided to push forward with it, just advertising it as the uprising. And then two weeks before the movie comes out, you rename it. To the rise of Robin hood. I, I don't know, Rob, look, hopefully the movie's still great. and fair or unfair my interest in this movie has just dropped about 50 percent and again maybe that's not fair maybe that's not rational i'm just being honest my suddenly my interest level in this film has dropped like 50 percent uh but it is still paul greengrass it is still andrew garfield who i adore so i don't know were you surprised by this were you expecting this to be a robin hood movie i don't know what did you take what's your takeaway from this no dude i was not and you know it's stuff like this that i you've got paul greengrass who i think his third born movie actually revolutionized action filmmaking he actually did something new with that quick cutting but shooting for that quick cutting he changed the geography of of how to make an action film forever yeah and an incredible director so you i don't think paul greengrass jumps onto a project wondering whether or not that maybe or we might be making a robin hood origin story it's so it seems although i will say this the uprising is a little generic what does that mean it doesn't tell you it's a period piece so i can understand this last minute marketing push or whatever but it does seem a little a little weird you know it's it's it's like i remember when um well it's a whole different story but when john carter was not going to be called john carter of mars or john carter warlord of mars because they said other movies with mars and the title weren't doing well i'm like come on you guys really but with this i mean i get it i get it you're trying to tie this movie into war uh to robin hood but john robin hood hasn't exactly been burning up the box office charts with the last couple of no it has not of robin hood movies that have been released i mean i will say this i think that hugh jackman's film is one of my top five films of the year i i wasn't as enamored with it as you were but at least it was a really interesting take yeah yeah yeah the john carter one was was that was i just i just don't understand because if if this is it's a robin hood movie okay why two weeks number one why don't you know why don't you just advertise it as a robin hood movie from the beginning if you decided and made the decision that we don't want to advertise as a robin hood movie we want that to be like a little bit of a reveal at the end okay why two weeks before the movie comes out do you do that then i could hear the the excuse well maybe it wasn't tracking well fine but all of a sudden calling it a robin hood movie i don't think it's a robin hood movie i don't think it's a robin hood movie i don't think it's a help your tracking like doing this big switcheroo right at the end so yeah i don't actually jonathan can you look this up somebody in the live chat asked a really good question and maybe it's just this is piling on but is this a paramount movie oh lord help can you look that up i i don't think it is to be fair i don't feel like it is focus features it's focus which is a subcompany of focus isn't paramount i don't believe i could be wrong but i don't think focus features is part of paramount so anyway okay just just i just wanted i wanted to be fair i wanted to make sure we're fair anyway guys question is for you oh universal it's universal yeah focus is for you so what do you think about this that andrew garfield's paul greengrass from the uprising which i thought looks really so good is now called the uprising the rise of robin hood which is i don't know i whatever you guys think about it jump supergirl uh we knew james gunn rolled immediately after superman right into producing its follow-up superman man of tomorrow that was really going to feature superman lex luther as they have to maybe begrudgingly team up to fight brainiac well they've been shooting the film for a while and it is now official it came out that superman man of tomorrow has now wrapped filming to which james gunn called it a truly wonderful experience and he shared like this really cool picture as well on his social media about uh him and a couple of people including lex luther there just jumping into the lake uh after that they were shooting at after the final day of filming and all that is done so superman man of tomorrow the principal photography is now wrapped and now they hit head into the edit bays and the visual effects which i'm sure they've been working on the visual effects from for probably a year already but now they go in for the final stretch of post-production to get this damn thing ready to come out in theaters next year so a couple things i thought about on this was number one it's it's that word i love so much rob it's the tangibilization of superman man of tomorrow uh the thing is now actually finished shooting it's got everybody and the kitchen sink in it because we've got uh i think we're gonna have two green lanterns in it we're gonna have blue beetle in it we're gonna have super girl in it we're gonna have hot girl in it we're gonna have mr terrific in it it's gonna have a whole bunch of people in there right including i just mentioned what's that green lantern did you say green lantern yep aaron pierre there might even be two green lanterns might even be two green lanterns in there but uh we'll see what what comes of that but it brought up for me a question when when looking at this and i'm excited for it again i thought superman was a success on every single level i mean again as a as a third iteration of superman in just recent years the fact that it came out and made more money than the seven previous dceu movies did in the worst of circumstances with dc's reputation being buried seven feet underground superman comes out and did at the box office what it did which i thought was impressive had huge audience scores huge critic scores it was exactly what dc needed and of course peacemaker was a win for them creature i'm not as big on creature commandos a lot of people are but i thought creature commandos was good and a lot of people certainly liked it all that kind of stuff and then there's supergirl and right now lanterns is killing it but it it made me think and i always think about this when talking about upcoming movies is it particularly upcoming movies that are part of a franchise and the question of how we're going to do this is the question of how we're going to do this is so important to the franchise is this next movie because we got clay face coming out right we have clay face coming but i would argue that clay face while i am very excited for it and you got mike flanagan wrote it i mean so it's got pedigree coming out the ass i i'm excited to see clay face but the reality is it is a low budget under the radar kind of film where really i don't think we're going to be able to do it because we're going to be able to do it because we're going to be able to do it because we're going to be able to do it because we're going to be able to do it because we're going to clay faces success or failure is going to move the needle much guys i i really don't i think if clay face god makes 300 million dollars for a really low budget film and it's okay that's great but i don't think that moves the needle much if clay face isn't liked by everybody doesn't honestly it's so under the radar i don't think it moves the needle much i don't think it moves the needle much either way i'm still looking forward to it i still want it to be good and it would still be great if it was good but good or not it's not gonna move the needle much but uh the next movie is going to be the next superman movie man of tomorrow that absolutely has the potential here to move the needle and so how important is it well there's how important is it before supergirl came out and then there's how important is it after supergirl came out how important it is prior to supergirl coming out was well i mean pretty important and that it's still one of the earlier films of the new dcu but really the more important one was superman that one they could not miss they had to come out get the audience to like it and get the critics to like it to start rebuilding the reputation of dc start getting some goodwill back that was the most important thing but after supergirl fell on its face so hard and i'm not just talking about the box office result i'm talking quality wise and again i i don't think it's on the same awful level as ant-man and the lost quantum mania or craven the hunter or morbius but it was a poor film it was it was a bad film if you liked it that's awesome but you know i'm the one who's giving the speech right now so to me it was a pretty poor film so i would agree with you yeah so it is and to me guys that heightened the importance of superman man of tomorrow yes because let's say let's for argument's sake say that clay face ends up being a winner okay great that means that really the new dcu will be four out of five right it or five out of six right because creature commandos was a win for them peacemakers a win for them uh lanterns just looks like it's we'll talk more about lanterns here so far so good superman uh was a big uh check mark for them and hopefully clayface will be too but then you have supergirl but supergirl wasn't just a disney plus kind of show it wasn't just on hbo max it wasn't an animated thing it was a major high budget motion picture and it sucked and all of a sudden a lot not all but a lot of that goodwill that we got from superman that kind of made us stop thinking about the failed dceu all of a sudden ghosts of dceu past started creeping up again once we saw supergirl and i would say while still not this the way i'll go on it rob i'm still gonna say superman man of tomorrow is not as important as the first superman was but i'm gonna say it's probably twice as important now that we've had the failure that was supergirl now it's really important that this not be allowed to become a losing streak even though we've got lanterns and probably clayface in between them we're talking about big major release films you cannot have two back-to-back that don't work so i'm going to say the importance of this is even higher now good day i'm justin wolfers host of the platypus economics podcast if there's one thing i've learned from a and so far i have zero films that james gunn ever directed that i didn't like so that that's going for it anyway rob the question is for you what do you think like about how important is it like what are you expecting from this movie and how important is it that it not every movie has to do great but how important is it that this movie ends up going into the win column for them john i think it's uh extraordinarily important that this goes into the win column because you know this this is a this is a spike this is a foundational spike this solidifies the dc universe as an entity because you know this is a this is a spike this is a it's it's it's capitalizing on what james gunn did with superman you're now bringing in more characters you're bringing in more of the superman mythology and we're going to see probably more so than even the first superman this film is going to have more to say about the dc universe as far as james gunn is concerned than anything we've seen so far there's going to be more world building in it more characters in it and i think james gunn as a director needs to deliver a film that feels bigger than the first superman i really need i think this movie needs to feel epic it needs to feel that the stakes are huge we've got to have great characters we have to have sweeping moments of of action and adventure um and i think that this is a turning point this has to be a win this has to be a win across the board i think and um i hope it is i mean i've always wanted to see brainiac on the big screen i love the fact that we're seeing luther in the in the battle armor i i i'm really excited for this movie but this movie has got to hit it out of the park it really does i think yeah uh it's it's a pretty vital one for them i think anyway guys question is for you what do you think about this now that superman man of tomorrow is finished filming we start thinking about okay like like every movie every movie you want to be good but some for franchises carry a little bit more weight how important is it that superman man of tomorrow goes under the win column because supergirl certainly did not anyway whatever you guys think about it jump lanterns right now so far so good actually so far so amazing not only has the show been terrific but it opened to bigger numbers than a lot of other hbo shows including shows like the penguin which was a big ratings hit for them and went on to get major emmy nominations including the highest honor there is in television a nomination for best drama series at the emmys and lanterns came out and actually had bigger numbers in that and there had been some question about whether there was interest for the first lanterns movie certainly showed that there was interest and now it looks like the second episode it looks like the numbers went up they went up now here's the thing it is one thing for a show's debut to have big numbers i mean not all of them do but normally speaking a television show's biggest numbers will even be the biggest numbers in the history of television either usually be its debut or its finale right and for lanterns to come out with such big numbers in its debut fantastic great but the real question is can the second episode hold those numbers because it's great if everybody comes in out of curiosity to check out the show but if the show isn't good and the show doesn't interest them they won't come back for week two let alone see the numbers rise well according to flix patrol and some other reports out there it looks like the numbers on lanterns episode two actually went up not up by a ton not up by a truckload but they did go up and i'll be honest with as a matter of fact it was the second place show out of all the streaming second only to the debut of reacher which of course we know breacher is a television juggernaut as well it should be it's an amazing show i love reacher but lanterns numbers actually went up from the numbers they had in week one now we're going to wait for the definitive numbers that will come from uh nielsen but of course nielsen doesn't put out their report for like a month they're always about a month behind on those numbers so we'll get the nielsen numbers in a number of weeks but all indicators are that the numbers for lanterns went up and i'll tell you what rob after the second episode i think the numbers are just going to go up again for episode three i really do i i think the first episode was fantastic i think the second episode was even better you may or may not agree some people may think the first one was better that's fine it's all opinion but mine was i thought the second episode was even better and i am mega hooked into this show now and i think it's going to be i think we're going to look at the wandavision phenomenon again where it's like wandavision was just week after week after week the numbers just keep kept going up and they kept going up because people saw it kept coming back and telling other people they got to get on board with the show and i think that's what's going to happen with lanterns i mean who knows episode three and four could suck and it could fall off a cliff but right now it's on a really good pace i was a little bit surprised rob to be honest that it was able to hold out those huge numbers from week one were you surprised that it's held those numbers what do you think's going to happen here do you see the numbers going up down what do you think well you know it it did not surprise me and it did not surprise me because i found the show so interesting like i it was not the show that i expected and i thought a lot of the choices were were in a way kind of odd but i was riveted to the show and i wanted to know where it's There's so many elements that I really like, like alien invasions and, and the whole, the whole mentor student relationship. And I love the whole Green Lantern lore, which they're weaving in. There's a lot of Green Lantern lore that's been woven into the show that is not in a way that it hits you over the head. You know, it's there, but it's, I find it fascinating. I think it's a fascinating show. And I was riveted by Caesar episode two as well. So it doesn't surprise me that, that people, I mean, look, how many people are familiar with the Green Lantern comics and how many people are familiar with John Stewart from like the justice league international animated series. I would imagine a small, small fraction of the HBO audience. I think what it's delivering is an intriguing science fiction mystery and it feels fresh. It feels new. People say, it's just true detective from the spaceman. And I'm like, it's not, no, it's not. It's different than that. The comparison I can understand. Cause there's two disparate dudes looking for what's going on. You know, I get that, but that it could be another 48 hours. It could be midnight run. You know, it's, that is a classic trope and I'm really enjoying everything that I'm watching and seeing from the show. I can't wait to see episode three. So I think that's what obviously people are catching on. So it's not me. It's that trope that general audiences love, but they still have enough to pepper in that comic book or alien. aspect of it that the rest of the audience is like oh i'm just engaged enough to like you know continue with this you know yeah but and i think it will probably blow up so here's the thing too the interesting thing about it was when they kind of announced there was going to be that true detective aspect to it a lot of people thought there were some comic book fans that i read and saw that were like they're just going to alienate the comic fans like they're gonna they're just gonna leave out all the true comic book stuff and and i understand that concern like when you say it's going to be a grounded true detective kind of show i get that concern but man this show is throwing in some deep cuts have these people ever read daredevil comic books or actually green lantern comic books where there are serious moments and it's not all action in yeah but but i think for those people like making it true detective when you think of green lantern to be fair when you when you initially think of green lantern you think of these galactic kind of things sort of stuff but i mean and you know what there was i never know how to say the name because i only have ever read it on the comic book page but atrocitus atrocious atrocious how whatever the head of the red lanterns right a lot of people theorized in episode two that the one dude was him and i was like no i think they're just kind of setting up similarities and there's meaning mining well you know i'm always of the mind that the one dude was him and i was like no i think that if you make a really good argument to me you can change my mind and i watched a video by our friend rob over at comics explained and he changed my mind he told i am now on board with everybody else is like oh yeah that dude's totally a red lantern that that dude is totally a red lantern uh so rob completely changed my mind on that so it's gonna be exciting to see i cannot wait for this sunday to watch episode three of course rob you and i will do an after show on monday night uh or a post game show by the way it's it's pronounced atrocities atrocities i'm sure i'll continue to mispronounce it but correct me atrocities atrocities um looking forward to that violent uh roman empire that ever lived sounds good yeah but you know i i do i do again i'm happy that we're doing this after show because i do think it's really it's really interesting but for me you know the frustrating thing is comic books now really depend on comic books when you read them and when i first started reading back in the early 80s i went back and read this very famous comic book run with green lantern and green arrow where they were traveling across the united states and it dealt with issue-oriented stories of the day racism religion drug use and this feels very much and you can buy by the way you can buy the absolute edition of these comics and i'm sure that when this show is received like damon lindelof was reading this run this you know it was uh um neil adams and denny o'neill it's a very very very famous run of comics so to me this doesn't feel any different it feels like they based it on a very classic comic book run problem is no one today bitching about it has read those comics so they don't know and that's the thing that frustrates me it's it's i'm like this green lantern feels like the green lantern that i was reading when i got back into comics in the early 80s because dc had reprinted reprinted baxter paper versions of this storyline and it's it's very much that storyline i mean not exactly but it's very similar anyway guys question is for you what do you think about this i mean it looks like those huge numbers that lanterns launched with kept those curious people around because numbers for episode two were even just a little bit higher again we'll wait for the final numbers to come in in about a month or so but to this you know one of my favorite guys in the mcu is jeremy renner as hawkeye i i love the guy's hawkeye i i'm not i don't think hawkeye should have his own standalone movie i think he's a perfect ensemble character uh like the way he's used in the original avengers movie perfection that's just the way i've always kind of seen now i wasn't a big fan of the hawkeye show be that as it may i really love jeremy renner as the character now you guys might remember that a little while ago there was a little bit of a kerfuffle um when jeremy renner publicly came out and said uh yeah the people at marvel talked to me about season two of hawkeye but they wanted to pay me half of what i was paid for season one and told them what because i got run over by a truck you think i'm only half now that's actually paraphrasing that's what he said he said do you think because i had that accident i'm only worth half now and yeah it looked like maybe he would never play it again now a few months later he made some more comments it sounded like look i love the character and i totally love the character and i love the character and i would totally be open to coming back to play him you know under the right circumstances and blah blah blah blah now during the atrocities pr stunt that was chair watch see what i did there i like it well done that was chair watch one of the names that was missing that was not there was jeremy renner well the questions are now answered wonder no more jeremy renner has just basically announced to the world that he's back as he jumped on his social media channel a little bit earlier i believe it was his instagram account and posted this image of his uh of course iconic suit with the music with hawkeye's theme music playing and there's no other description no other explanation oh there's a subtitle it's the rise of robin hood it's the rise of robin hawkeye the rise of robin hood so it was he just put up this picture of of his hawkeye uniform with the hawkeye music playing no other description he's just announced that he is in fact it's now 100 he's back as hawkeye now that does still leave us with a couple of questions one in particular when is he back is this announcement of his is this post of his is this tease of his in relation to a hawkeye season three which or hawkeye season two which he had talked about previously right so he's talked about that is it hawkeye in relation to avengers secret wars which we know has begun production could it be that yet again he is talking i'll always do that just for jonathan could it be that yet again uh or could it be that they had just announced that they're doing one last round of some reshoots on doomsday so could it be that he's suiting up for a doomsday cameo these are all legitimate questions i would i would say the top two contenders here are hawkeye season two because we know disney and him had been talking about hawkeye season two this goes all the way back to after his accident and the whole pay dispute but i think the number one possibility here is the thing that is literally going to have the dude who played the greatest american hero back in the 80s coming back for it which is secret wars i think this is more about a secret wars announcement although it is very possible it could be for a quick little cameo shot in doomsday i doubt it but that's not impossible i think rob that jeremy renner's just announced that he's in secret wars anyway rob you saw the post are you surprised that renner and the mcu is now all made nice he's officially back and what do you think his return is going to be in well i think he needed to come back i mean obviously the last avengers movie began with his family getting dusted and he was a big part of it i mean one one of the things i will say about doomsday was let's call it as written i think the climax of the movie not the climax but the denouement i don't know what you call it lacked punch in a way and i think they needed to tee up a a reason to get excited for secret wars and i think we're going to see and this is just speculation i have no idea what's going to happen but i think it's going to be a lot of fun to watch and i don't know what they're going to do i just want to be clear on this i have no idea what they're going to do for these reshoots but it would make sense to tee up secret wars by including at the end of doomsday a lot of cameos that we had not seen in doomsday to set up the battle lines the lines if you know the story yeah you know there's there are factions upon factions upon factions right and i think that that they need and i think they've this is a great um addition if they do that They're setting up people that are battle lines are being drawn. So the audience is going to go, oh, my God. And it's going to leave everybody on a high note. And I think that that will include a lot of characters that are not in Doomsday proper. And I think it's all about Secret Wars. By the way, I'm seeing some people in the live chat saying, oh, no, no, John. This was about the Endgame press. No, it's not. No, it's not. Jeremy Renner. First of all, I went to the post. There's nothing on his Instagram story about Endgame press, which he is participating in Endgame Encore press. He is. But Jeremy Renner is not going to. Oh, I'm going to do a press event for a seven year old movie that I'm going back to. So, yeah, he's not putting up a picture of his hockey uniform with the music playing. To announce that. So, no, that's that's not it. That's not it at all. He's definitely back. So it's just a matter about what it is he's going to be. And guys, pardon me. Question is for you. What do you think about this? Where do you think we're going to see Hawkeye coming back? And listen, I think it's vital that he comes back because, again, with the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, but also with at one point the departure of Chris Evans and the departure of Chris Evans. The departure of Robert Downey Junior, stuff like that, to really reemphasize and reestablish the identity of the MCU. This is the MCU. I think it's vital for him to come back. There is, of course, you know, a movie that they've been working on for Batman Brave and the Bold. By the way, we don't know. We don't know for sure. That's going to be the title of it. It's probably going to be something else when it all comes to fruition. But it's been a while that we've been waiting for it. And there's been a lot of discussion about when it's going to come and when it's going to happen and all that kind of stuff. Well, you guys know who have watched this show for a while. And Rob, you remember this. This was when we were still in the old studio, which is over two years ago now. That I said, I do not believe that Andy Muschietti is going to. End up directing this film. I do not believe Andy Muschietti is going to end up doing this film. And I believe that this whole way through. Now, recently, Andy Muschietti made a comment that got a lot of people talking. Muschietti said, yeah, well, development on Batman Brave and the Bold is delayed while the merger stuff is being worked out. To which James Gunn immediately debunked that and said, no, it's not. And Andy shouldn't have said that because no, it's not. So obviously, James Gunn and Andy. Muschietti have never been on the same page. At least it doesn't look like it on the surface, whatever. But I have not believed for years that Andy Muschietti, who I think did a great job on the Flash movie and did an amazing job on it. Welcome to Derry. I've never believed that he's going to be doing that. Well, there are now some reports coming out suggesting that indeed Andy Muschietti may not be doing Batman Brave and the Bold. And that James Gunn himself. May actually step in to direct it. Now, this comes from a friend of ours, Jeff Snyder. Who said on a recent episode of his podcast with John Rocha. That he had heard that Muschietti won't be directing it. Now, what really adds to this, and we talked about this a few weeks ago, guys, was the fact that just recently, and we talked about it here on the show. It, Welcome to Derry, just got greenlit. Greenlit for season two. And if you're greenlighting it, Welcome to Derry season two, that's Andy Muschietti's show. That's going to tie him up for a while. And they just kind of reemphasize that. So then it becomes a question of, is James Gunn going to pull a Thanos and say, fine, I'll do it myself. And step in to do it. And listen, with the failure of Supergirl, all these projects just become more and more important that they work. And so far, it looks like the only things that are going to work, at least on the big screen, is the stuff that James Gunn directs himself. Now, look, you guys know how I feel about James Gunn directing films. I think he's a remarkable director. I'm not going to apologize for that. But I also think he's supposed to be the CEO of this company. And you cannot half-ass two jobs. You can't do two full-time jobs. You can't. You cannot be full-time two years on set of a movie and working on a movie and also be the CEO of a company. You can't do it. You can't do it right. And those are truly full-time. Those aren't like eight-hour days. No, you're married to these things. Rob, you've directed films. You know that it's not an eight-hour-a-day job when you're directing a film. It's all consuming. It's not the four months that you're shooting. It's the year and a half before you start shooting. And the year and a half after you shoot. You can't do it. And I was fine with James Gunn directing the first movie because that sets the tone. I didn't like the idea that he was then going to direct Man of Tomorrow. And I don't like the idea of him just continuing to direct. But you know that I think he's going to step down from the CEO job anyway. So I don't know. Maybe that's opening the doors here. So anyway, the whispers go on and continue to suggest that James Gunn himself. May direct the Batman movie. And once again, keep this in mind. So, which is interesting. Which is interesting. I have two different minds on this. Actually, guys, my mind is going in about 50 different directions on this. Because number one, yeah, I've never believed that Andy Muschietti would end up directing this film. I mean, not never. Initially, sure. But shortly after it, I just never believed he would direct this film. And by the way. By the way, it's still possible he does. Right? Just because I'm saying I haven't believed he would do it doesn't mean it's a fact that he's not. So he, Andy Muschietti may indeed still end up directing that. Let's be clear about that. I just don't believe he will. So then it becomes a question about, well, who directs it? Well, there's not many better people to direct it than James Gunn. Because again, he's never directed a film that I haven't really liked. Most of them I straight up love. But at the same time, I think he's got to get his ass back into the office. So I, I, I don't know. Like, I'm really torn on this because you know how I feel about him directing too much. But at the same time, I don't hate the idea of a James Gunn directed Batman film in this particular DCU. Anyway, Rob, where are you at on this right now? Like, we've been talking about the Andy Muschietti angle for a long time. And again, we're just coming off of a remarkable effort from him. On it. Welcome to Derry, which was completely fantastic. Well, look, we both still think he, yeah. Do you think he still ends up directing this? If not, do you think it'll be James Gunn? Do you think James Gunn will pass this one off and get bringing somebody else to direct it? I don't know. What do you see transpires here? Well, I mean, I can see it's very up in the air with what's going on at Warner Brothers. And if the Paramount merger goes through, I think all bets are off in terms of where the studio is. And I think that James Gunn could see this opportunity if he can get brave in the bold off the ground soon. If there's a script, if he doesn't have to wait another year and Andy Muschietti is going right into production of Welcome to Derry season two. I think it makes sense because it'll give James Gunn maybe potentially a last hurrah with his universe. He'll have two Superman movies, a Batman movie, Peacemaker and Creature Commandos, and then the failure of Supergirl. But for him. I think that ultimately will be a win. And if he can't be building this universe anymore, directing a Batman movie is a dream. Who wouldn't do that if you have the opportunity to put yourself in the position of directing that movie? I think that James Gunn would knock that out of the park and it gives him a chance to make something that's very different from Superman. And, you know, when you're working on Superman, I can't help but think that in his mind all the time was what would the Batman movie be? That's the opposite of the movie I'm directing. I'm directing right now. So there's never there's it's probably never been far from his thoughts. Batman, how Batman is, what it would be like if I directed it because my Superman is very different. So I could absolutely see him doing it. And again, I think there's so much insecurity about what's going to happen at Warner Brothers in the future, especially in terms of people's deals. And we've talked about his deals up in twenty twenty seven. And it's either he's either. going to lose his deal and be done. and walk away or he has an opportunity to do a film there's probably been a lot of development on this movie we don't know anything about the script but i would imagine that they probably got a good handle on what it's going to be and if they can get it off the ground pretty quickly it makes sense from a business standpoint and a personal standpoint why he would do it i just don't know if i believe that he is going to do it yeah somebody in the live chat is say and it's a fair point says i love james gunn movies but damn let another director shine he tried that with supergirl yeah he tried to let another director shine a really good director by the way a really good director by the way and we saw what happened with supergirl that doesn't mean that needs to all uh it certainly doesn't mean that james gunn should be directing everything though like again and he's not directing lanterns you know he's the executive replicated bane breaking batman's back but the whole story about what leads up to that is incredible and then of course what happens after that is amazing bruce goes away to heal he leaves the mantle of the bat in the hands i believe his name is jean paul valley i believe that's his name also known as the character azrael and he leaves azrael to become azrael starts to go a little nuts and has to ultimately be taken down by bruce when he comes back which leads to one of my all-time not one of my the to me all-time favorite comic book moment all-time favorite comic book moment comes at the end of this series so jean paul's been beaten bruce has taken the mantle of the bat away from azrael he's still not done healing he needs to go away again for a while and it's at that moment that richard grayson dick grayson former robin now nightwing guys it's it's it's cinema it's epic cinema now that the threat's done bruce has taken down azrael all that kind of stuff it's time for the airing of the grievances and dick grayson gets into bruce's face and is like i'm paraphrasing but what the hell man how did you leave the mantle of the bat to jean paul valley and you didn't come to me right and it's like it's this whole issue of this bearing their souls heart to heart but why did you not come to me and so they argue they rash it out and it ends with this beautiful moment when bruce puts his hand on on richard's shoulder and says this is the way it is between fathers and sons it's beautiful the whole thing is just like one of the greatest best moments in comic book history not not just the moment when he says between comics sons but that whole confrontation when dick is like okay great we've dealt with the problem now you're fine good everything's good now what the fuck how did you not come to me and ask me to take over the mantle of the bat while you were oh it's just so good it's so good one of the greatest things in comic book i get chills when i think about it i and i don't know i don't know if i want to watch that in animated form i don't know because it won't live up to what's in my head and that's not fair that's not fair to the movie right so i don't know i might check it out though i might be just way too tempted to check it out all right aaron writes success of lanterns definitely has me thinking about uh next for dc and hbo flash is a prime candidate my no no i don't see that at all uh the speed force uh sci-fi epic with barry and wally traveling through time i know i'll be honest with you i don't like that and also honestly i think i think it might be a little bit before they get around to flash i think it'll be a little bit because while i think the flash movie was great i don't care what anybody else says you can have your own opinion that's the beauty of movies it's all subjective it's art it hits us all in different ways i thought flash like rob and i both we we loved flash i don't think it's like one of the top 15 greatest comic book movies all time or anything any nonsense like that but i thought it was really great i i was thoroughly entertained by it yeah some wonky cgi at the end 100 but who cares i thought it was a lot of fun that said man ezra miller made that a shit show i'm not talking about in movie i'm talking about all the nasty drama surrounding it and quite frankly i don't think it's a good movie i don't think it's a good movie i don't think it's I don't know that they want to go back to flash anytime soon because of that. And now I could totally be wrong, but also besides that, I don't see flash. I'm not interested in a flash TV show, to be honest with you. Uh, I would much rather see flash on the big screen. I think that's where flash belongs. I also think you can do a lot with green lantern without that. That would be a lot easier to do and simpler to do than you can with flash. So yeah, not for me, but listen, man, that doesn't mean that there's not a possibility there to do something interesting, but you're asking me and personally, I wouldn't be interested in it. I'd be much more interested to see a flashback on the big screen whenever they get around to being ready to do that again. And I think the stench of the Ezra Miller stuff is going to be all over it for a while. Unfortunately. All right. Uh, David Jones writes, who's your favorite star Wars droid K2SO. Yeah, man. shock and surprise as the credits start to roll and i'm packing my stuff up getting ready to leave because again i don't sit through credits produced by james gunn and then when the written by the i think there were four names on the writer's screen came up written by james gunn one of the writers i had no idea none i i don't know how i missed i had no idea james gunn had any involvement with that movie no idea whatsoever um so yeah anyway yeah james gunn is a master about taking deep stuff and wrapping it in something joyous and he's incredible like you watch again i always i quite often go back to suicide squad his suicide squad you know yes in the same movie where you got idris elba and john cena running through a village trying to see who can pull off the most creative kills right in that same movie they do the rat catcher 2 story which is one of the most heartbreaking things i've ever seen in a comic book movie i mean he's just and that that moment of king shark seeing the people in the street without any dialogue like one of the most emotional moments in the movie is when he's like poignant moments i mean it was just so beautiful but the way james gunn can weave all that stuff together is incredible i listen there's a reason i've said for so long that i am such a big james gunn fan i have been a major major james this is not a recent jump on the bandwagon thing okay i've been a huge james gunn fan ever since slither and then i because of slither i went and got caught up on all this previous stuff after that i i'm a huge fan of the guy i think he's a one of our best filmmakers uh i still don't think he can balance being the ceo of a company and being a director at the same time but it is what it is but i think he is underrated in many many many ways but goes oh i have been mocked my child and he shows the concentration camp number and i assure you nobody will ever no needle will ever touch my skin again something like that right it's like oh like that that moment it wasn't a great movie but that moment i think is one of magneto's best moments on screen uh that moment was so good oh i have been marked my child and i assure you no needle will ever touch my skin again damn such a good scene it's just too bad that the movie itself wasn't all that great it has its moments listen i'll stand by that x-men 3 has its moments i'll i'll stand by ben affleck was cast as batman six months before they made the but but ben affleck confirmed that he had been cast to play batman six months before they made the announcement i think it is a very strong possibility that they've already cast batman we just don't know who it is or we might know who it is depending on who you believe um but yeah i don't see them making batman's debut in a clay I mean, everything I've seen so far has fallen in line with all the stuff that we knew. Um, but yeah, it's absolutely possible that there could be a lot of surprises like, Hey man, they're doing some reshoots right now. You never know. All right. Good question, man. Next up, uh, where are we? Alpha rights. There's a theater in Atlanta that was like, wow, nutty professor got a cult following just to see all the reservations get canceled within minutes. Okay. So what that is about, what that is about is that at one of the movie meetups, I can't remember which city it was. It might've been Atlanta or Pittsburgh. Um, there was really not much else playing. So, but there was a 30th anniversary screening of the nutty professor with Eddie Murphy. So just to mix it up, we decided to make that movie, the screening of it and a bunch of tickets got sold. Like the day we announced it, a bunch of tickets got sold. So you're right. Uh, that, and I never told that theater we were coming at, like, I always give the theaters a heads up. We're coming, but I hadn't given the theaters the heads up yet. I was going to give them the heads up this week. So yeah, you're right. That theater's probably like, wow, our nutty professor 30th anniversary screening sold a lot of tickets. And then, wow, they all canceled. I mean, so I don't know. I feel bad about that, but it was beyond my control. All right. Next up, uh, Darren writes, have you seen Guy Ritchie's in the gray? I have not anyway, uh, with Henry and John, I've not heard or anyone talk about it. It was good. You know what? I haven't. And that is so strange because I love Jake Gyllenhaal. I love Guy Ritchie. And you guys know what I think about my boy, Henry. And it got delayed and it got delayed and got delayed. And then it just kind of whispered into theaters. And before I knew it, it had already been in theaters for like a week. And I think I was on the road or something. And then I just never saw it. It's got Henry Cavill in it. And it's directed by Guy Ritchie. And I didn't know that. I didn't know that. I didn't know that. And I didn't see it. So no, I, and I mean, not a big loss. The movie did not make a splash, right? Like the movie didn't make a splash at all. Financially pop culturally, it made no splash. So whatever. It's not like it hurt the show that I didn't see it, but it is shocking that I haven't seen it because you guys know I'm a big Guy Ritchie fan and you guys know how I feel about my boy, Henry. So no, I haven't seen it yet, but I'm going to, I will sit down and watch it one of these days. All right. Blake, writes going to the movies, but instead of seeing Odyssey yet, I'm seeing Paw Patrol life with three kids, age three to seven, but love going with them no matter what it is. I love your show and hope to see you in St. Louis soon. Yeah, I will get around to doing St. Louis, but that's the great thing, right? Movie going is such a great experience. And you know what? Some people I've talked to people who are annoyed with kids in movies, like in theaters, I mean like kids in theaters. And yeah, like I get annoyed with kids in R-rated films. Like parents don't bring your kids to R-rated films, especially if they're so young, they're just going to act up. But I don't know, man, there's something that gives joy to my heart when I'm sitting in a kid-friendly movie and there's a bunch of kids in the theaters. And I remember this one, Ann and I were at this movie together, full house and like this, one of the characters on screen does something bad, right? Something bad. And all you hear in the theater was a quiet moment. And you just hear this little girl somewhere further up in the theater, piercing the quiet throughout the rest of the theater, doing what little girls do, which is even though their dad or their mom are this close to them, speak at the top of their lungs. And all you hear is this little girl speaking at the top of their lungs. And all you hear is this voice of this precious little girl somewhere going, he's bad. And the whole theater erupted. I don't mind that stuff, man. That makes my heart happy. It really does. And I think, first of all, I think audiences' reactions are great in movies. I think children's reactions in movies are something really special about that. So I think that's great that you get to do that. I think that's great that you get to do that, Blake. They do binge release and there are often 10 times as much to watch a show compared to HBO Max. It depends on the metrics and which numbers they specifically use. Because a lot of the places that, like Samba and other things, what they do is they count total numbers. They count total number of hours watched, right? So they'll count total numbers of hours watched. And under that metric, that very much can skew to Netflix because if they drop a whole season at once, well then in one week, whereas everybody's watching one episode of Reacher, they'll have six episodes of this Netflix show that they can watch all in the same night. And that skews it. Now, others will go by episodes. They'll look at episodes. And views per hours of episodes. So it really depends on what the metric they use is. Because yes, the ones that go purely by hours watched for a series, that can skew. As a matter of fact, there's some of the streaming ratings, they look at the show as a whole. So like on one chart, true story, Grey's Anatomy is still on one chart, but it's not just for one episode of Grey's Anatomy. It's still on one episode of Grey's Anatomy. And it's not just for one season of Grey's Anatomy. It's literally counting all the watch hours of the 15 seasons of Grey's Anatomy or however many seasons there are of Grey's Anatomy. So the difference, like Flixpatrol, Samba, Nielsen, there's a couple of others as well. Some of them use similar metrics. Some of them use different metrics. But yes, just pure hours watched could favor Netflix shows because again, they'll, well, not all of them do anymore, but a lot of the Netflix shows just drop all their seasons at once. for the movie meetup tour.
