Are We Buying These Breakouts? Welcome Back, Chourio! (5/5 Fantasy Baseball Podcast)
75m 28s
The podcast discusses several player performances and injuries. Davis Martin's recent dominance (7 shutout innings, 10 strikeouts) is met with skepticism due to a sub-10% swinging strike rate and high hard contact allowed; he's seen as a hot streak rather than a true breakout. Peyton Tolley's strong start (7 innings, 0 earned runs, 8 strikeouts) with improved velocity and a quality curveball suggests he can hold a rotation spot, though consistency with secondary pitches remains key. Jackson Churio's return from a fractured hand was electric, with four hits above 103 mph, reinforcing his elite potential as a future 30-30 hitter. The episode also covers major injuries: Tarik Skubal will miss three months after elbow surgery; Hunter Brown is targeting an early June return; Roman Anthony's wrist issue requires a specialist visit; and Jordan Westburg's elbow discomfort may lead to surgery. Other notes include Cal Raleigh's side tightness, Michael Harris's quad injury, and Chris Paddack's velocity drop. Overall, the hosts advise cautious optimism on breakouts like Martin while endorsing Tolley and Churio as strong fantasy assets.
Welcome to the fantasy baseball today podcast from CBS Sports Got a fantasy question email fantasy baseball at CBSi.com Get ready to win your league Now here's Frank Scott and Chris hey there welcome in to fantasy baseball today on Tuesday May 5th Cinco de Mayo. I am Frank sample joint by Scott white and Chris towers today on the show How much do we believe in these three white socks breakouts? That's right There's at least three of them fun with arbitrary endpoints and much more Let's get into players of the night and there's only one place to start the sun will come out Tanaka Bet your bottom dollar with Tanaka Rest in peace to the great John sterling 87 years old called every single plate appearance of Derek Jeter's career Every single pitch of Mariano's which is just crazy to think about he's also called 47% of all Yankees postseason games Which is just truly I saw something he had Broadcast something like 3% of all major league baseball games ever And like that might be fake it sounds fake, but like Might not be because he's been there since 1951 I think yes It's crazy man crazy long illustrious career there for John sterling So rest in peace to him want to give my shout out there up at the top Let's get into the players of the night and let's talk a little bit about Davis Martin Who might be legit? I mean an amazing start here at the angel 7 shutout innings 10 strikeouts Hero walks 19 whiffs on 85 pitches nine of those came on the slider He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in all seven starts one earn runner fewer in five straight He has gone seven innings in three of his last five Seven or more strikeouts and three straight so he is doing something right what is he doing? Well, he's changed up the pitch makes this year He is throwing his cutter a lot more this season the usage is up from 2% last year 17% so far this year And it kind of feels like maybe that has just kind of unlocked the rest of his arsenal His slider entering the start had a 53% with rate and in this one it had Nine whiffs in 82% with rate and maybe the craziest out of all he didn't throw a single slider in the zone And he still had nine whiffs which is just crazy to think about right? It's like man. He really had these guys off balance and obviously awesome start here for Davis Martin The next question is how much do we believe it so Scott? How much do you believe it? Oh How much do I believe it? I believe that Davis Martin needs to be rostered. I believe it that much He's a percent rostered already so yeah, and he needs to be what what's weird about it is For that crazy whiff rate on the slider It's rare to see a whiff rate of over 50% he doesn't actually throw it that much It's fifth most thrown pitch now for it's kind of like for our thrown equally number two three four and five are all thrown about 15% So he's one of these pitchers who has an expansive arsenal and obviously it's worked for him It's just weird to have a pitch that that's good at missing bats at least this year. It's become that good at missing bats and Your swinging strike rate is less than 10% which is an awful swinging strike rate Obviously, this was against the angels the most strikeout prone team of baseball so we got the 10 strikeouts But it was his third straight start with more than a strikeout per inning so You know if this was 15 years ago and I hadn't heard of swinging strike rate. I'd just be looking at At how many strikeouts he's been getting recently and I'd be pretty psyched about it. I don't know. I'm I definitely see the potential For Davis Martin. I don't know with what he's doing right now that I can be as excited What I mean by that is Because obviously he's got an area of 164 and it's like but what I mean by that is I don't If I if I if I don't look at those surface level numbers the ERA and the whip and all that and I just take in The the data points that normally indicates skill level. I would not be particularly excited But I see the potential with that slider being as good of a batman service it is that okay, maybe maybe there is another geared unlock here and in the meantime Obviously things are going well enough that you can use him. I don't know I know that's not a very conclusive answer, but it's kind of confusing to me. Yeah, I I kind of view this one is just Play the hot hand and hope it doesn't burn you before it falls apart kind of situation because I don't really like even the slider Which is getting phenomenal results It's still I think he's only throwing like 95 of them this season or something and It's never been this good of a swing and miss pitch last year. I think it was like a 32% with rate which is solid Well, that's to get back to Frank's point about the cutter He's sure he he wasn't throwing a cutter now He is and I just wonder if it journals well enough of the slider or something that now the sliders become a pitch. Yeah, but When you look at the the stuff metrics, you know, whether it's for this start or for the season as a whole Nothing really suggests That it's above average stuff even the slider actually rates out pretty poorly by that metric and maybe that's something that the the The models can't account for right like tunneling. I know some of them taken to account, but I think we're still on the I think we're still on the precipice of Figuring out the tunneling stuff and so maybe there is something here that's not being counted for clearly the results are really good right now You know me, you know, I am reticent to buy into The small sample size breakout absent really really compelling evidence and I don't really see much compelling evidence for David Martin being a Great pitcher. So you could talk me into maybe he's a pretty good pitcher, but even then Entering the start it was a 455 XERA. So it's like well, that's what I was about to say like I feel justified in my confusion because here are the ERA estimators or 55 XERA 355 X Fib 288 fifth so pair up there As a wide like none of them can even agree on how good Davis Martin is actually I think what that highlights is they are capturing excuse. They are capturing different things Fib basically assumes pitchers have no control over their quality of contact allowed except for home runs X Fib kind of assumes they have no control over their quality of contact allowed and XERA accounts for the quality of contact they're allowing and He's given up 91.3 mile per hour average ex of velocity and a 407 expected well-bound contact and so That's prone to fluctuation over small sample sizes, but He was pretty bad in terms of quality of contact allowed last year too, so I I don't know I hate I hate doing this. I hate I hate how predictable it is that Chris is gonna crap on the Exciting small sample size breakout. I Fine hang on to him whatever. I don't know. I'm not saying you should drop Davis Martin, but I am also not saying that if you're looking to make trades this week you should value Davis Martin as much more than just a Back of rotation guy who happens to be hot right now because I think that's probably all he is yeah I actually agree with a lot of that so maybe there's some reassurance there for you Chris, but Yeah, the biggest thing is despite having 19 whips in this star so the swinging strike rate will go up But having a sub 10% swinging strike rate while allowing as much hard contact as he does is usually just a bad recipe and Entering to start his line drive rate allowed was 35.6% and The MLB average is 24.6% so it is much higher than that and it feels like there will be regression at some point Obviously he's not gonna carry a two ERA so you definitely hold on to him for now you ride the hot hand, but I think you should Probably be quick to pull the trigger once things kind of look like they're going sideways here for Davis Martin and On top of that like if you can sell him for a struggling, you know top 40 starting pitcher It's something I would look into doing so why not with the why not try that but right now he is pitching very well That is Davis Martin Scott over you for your player of the night Peyton Tully The good version showed up again Against the Tigers he won hit them over seven innings Zero earned runs allowed one walk eight strikeouts Wasn't his don't like obviously the line was his dominant more or less is the first start the Under the hood not as dominant nine whiffs on 83 pitches the fastball velocity Remember it was like at 97 in that first start on average and then it dropped to about 95 in the second start It was right in the middle of the two
he split the difference 96 and this third start. So it was good. It was encouraging to see after that second start 'cause it was like, okay, if he's gonna lose that much velocity after going seven innings and having to work on five days rest on a regular turn, which is not something, you know, he got that long period of rest before his 2026 major league debut. I was beginning to question between the velocity drop and how, you know, that he had to, it came right after him taking a regular rest period. I was beginning to question if he was really up to this to having a big league rotation spot. And if the red socks were going to feel he was up to it or if he was going to be on the shuttle back to triple A soon, maybe he was out of the bullpen some, or if they were just gonna let him go as a full time starter. And so I think if nothing else, this star for totally approved the ladder that he can stick in the rotation, that he can be a dependable part of it, that he doesn't need average 97 on his fastball to be good. So, you know, fortunately, it happened to be a two-star week. So I imagine everybody who rosters toly got to enjoy this start in their lineup. And that's great. And hopefully he'll be a must-start pitcher or something close to it going forward. - Yeah, the biggest thing for me is the fact that, you know, that velocity bounce back a little bit, basically was between his first and second start on this one, averaging 96 on the fastball. But I think at all times, if possible, I would like to see a useful secondary pitch out of Peyton Toley. We know the fastball is amazing. - That's a curve ball. - But that's exactly what I was getting to you. It doesn't always have to be the same pitch, but as long as there is a good secondary pitch, the curve ball was very good in this start, I think that I would feel very good about Peyton Toley moving forward. Now, it doesn't, again, it doesn't always have to be the curve ball. Sometimes it could be the sinker or it could be the cutter, whatever it might be, but as long as he has a second pitch working, I think he's gonna be pretty good just based on how good that fastball is. So a very nice and much needed bounce back here for Peyton Toley. What else was nice? Jackson Churio, the return. Chris, your player the night. - Yeah, Jackson Churio, you worry when players are coming back from a long layoff with, especially at the start of the season, and especially with like a fractured hand, like Jackson Churio was coming back from, you just worry if the after effects are gonna linger. Well, 103 mile an hour, single, 106 mile an hour, single, 108 mile an hour, double, 109 mile per hour, double, and a walk for good measure. That's a heck of a start to Jackson Churio's season, and it is a reminder that while the underlying numbers throughout the first two years of his career have been pretty underwhelming, two to 22 years old, and he was putting up underwhelming numbers at the major league level or underwhelming, you know, below the surface numbers at the major league level at a point when frankly, most other hitters are in college. You know, like most guys aren't even professionals, but by the time they're Jackson Churio's age. And while I don't think you should just expect him to hit every single bad at ball 103, 108, 109 miles an hour and for him to hit 1000, moving forward, he might, no, he won't, but he might take a big step forward. It's a little, can't keep getting away with it, but maybe he will. No, I just, I think you look at Jackson Churio and one, it's just a good sign that he's healthy because he had like a, he had a setback, he hit the ball off his foot, I think a couple days ago, and it was like, oh, is that gonna delay his return? I think at the very least we can look at this and say, yeah, Jackson Churio's healthy, he's fine. And at the very least, I think Jackson Churio, who is healthy is going to be a 2020 guy, who's gonna hit 275 280. But I think eventually he's gonna be a 30 30 guy, and I think eventually he's probably gonna be a 300 hitter guy, at least at some point in his career. And that might happen this year, because again, Jackson Churio is so young, and he has accomplished so much at such a young age in his career that you can't really put a ceiling on what he might be able to do, moving forward. - I liked him a lot coming into this season, I was pretty aggressive in taking him in the second round before we knew about the hand injury, unfortunately. And my expectation was kind of like an outfield, Gunner Henderson, although Gunner Henderson's kind of off to a slow start, batting average wise, but like, you know, a 25-25 good batting average type hitter. Like that was the expectation for this season. I think there's upside for him to be better than that eventually. Probably won't get to 25-25, because he's missed so much time already, but, you know, a 25-25 pace over the course of a full season. I'm pretty sure he's just, we're gonna rank him as a top 10 outfielder, right? - I think he's a massive season. Now they're back. - Yep. - I mean, he was, I'm not sure he moved out of my top 10, even with the-- - Yeah, I'm not as weak as he missed. - I think he did, but it wasn't far, if it might have been 11th or 12th, yeah. - Yeah, it feels like there's a pretty clear top nine, which includes a bunch of first or second round players, and like, you're on Alvarez now that he's in there, and James Wood, who is off to an awesome start, and then I think he kind of slot Jack Citrio in right into that range. - We'll take him over P. Crumbshung if we're redrafting right now for sure. - Yep, yep, I agree with that. Before we hit our first break, should have mentioned this up at the top, we had a massive injury today. We did an emergency podcast on it, so in case you're wondering, why aren't they leading the show with Tarek's Google, who is getting loose bodies removed from his elbow, and going to miss the next three months, it's because of-- - It's a podcast. - We did an emergency podcast, so make sure to check that out, and big thanks to those watching live, make sure to hit that like button, subscribe to the channel, if you haven't already. Let's take a break, and we'll be back right after this. Welcome back in, fantasy, a baseball today. Let's hit the news and notes, and we haven't heard much about Hunter Brown lately, but we did get an update. He could throw a bullpen as soon as this weekend. He is on the aisle with a grade two right shoulder strain. Sounds like the timetable is tentatively like early June, but that is assuming no setbacks there for Hunter Brown. Bolt Jack Citrio and Andrew Vaughan made their returns on Monday, we spoke about Churia, who went four for four with a walk and a run scored. Andrew Vaughan went over four with a strikeout in his return. Yoan DeRon will be activated Tuesday, quote, "Unless something weird happens." So hopefully nothing weird. Cal Raleigh has missed three straight with right side tightness. Ben Rice was out of the line up Monday, after leaving Sunday with a left hand contusion. They don't sound overly worried about it. I think they're just giving them a day here. See if he's in there on Tuesday. Roman Anthony left early on Monday due to a right wrist discomfort. X-rays came back negative, but he will fly to Boston to see a hand specialist. And just the way that that sounds makes me think we're probably going to get Nile Stint, but I guess that is not a certainty yet. Mike. It's a little concerning for the guy who is in the 86% tile in arm strength among all outfielders, by the way. I just noticed that earlier today, and I wanted to point out he's 86% tile. Roman Anthony apparently has solved his throwing problems. Yeah. I don't know how that happened. I didn't notice until just today. I saw some of his throws earlier in the season, and it was-- Yeah, no, it was a big storyline. It was a big storyline. It was sort of like 10 hoppers at home playing. No, he's throwing it. I averaging 90 miles per hour on his throws now, or at least whatever subset of his throws they used to judge that. I don't know how that works. Michael Harris was out of the line up again due to that left quad injury. He did appear as a pinch hitter, but has sat out four of the past five. And the latest update says that he is date to day. George Springer has missed two straight after getting hit by a pitch on his left foot on Saturday, but is expected to rejoin the lineup on Tuesday. Apparently, Brandon Woodruff will begin his throwing program this week. He went on the aisle Friday with shoulder inflammation. Seems aggressive, but I'm not a doctor. So good luck to Brandon Woodruff. Jacob Mizierowski threw a bullpen Monday after leaving his start with a hamstring cramp. He seems fine for his next start on Wednesday. Christian Yellich took batting practice on the field Monday. He is on the aisle with a left groin strain. Jeremy Pania could begin a rehab assignment this weekend. He's on the aisle with a right hamstring strain. Ryan Helsley could be clear to resume a throwing program later this week. He went on the aisle Friday with right elbow inflammation. Speaking of the Orioles, Jordan Westberg has been shut down from throwing after feeling discomfort in his right elbow. It's been one step back after another. And just doesn't feel good. The vibes, the vibes around Westberg. I said, it's a UCL tear. It was always-- the odds were always against them actually making it back within a reasonable timeframe. It seems like surgery is-- I'm not a doctor either, but it seems like surgery is going to be the likely result here for Jordan Westberg. Yiner DS was a late scratch due to a left abdominal injury. And then we learned that he is--
expected to go on the IEL. So another catcher injury in one catcher leagues, really good replacements out there. Not sure that Yardia's even needed to be roster in a one catcher league, the way that he's got to, the start that he's got off to. Shay Langleyers was placed on the paternity list, so he'll miss few days. The Marlins will evaluate Chris Patix' health after the pitcher experienced a drop in velocity on Sunday. And if he has to miss time that likely means he's got a little bit of a break in the lead. But Chris, as you pointed out very often, it's probably Braxton Garrett. - It's not a guarantee, but yeah, they would have to boot someone off to sixth the 40-man roster, and they did also say that Patix reported feeling fine and will make his start on Friday. - Boo. - I'm gonna guess that spike. That's it, unless he looks awesome, but that seems unlikely because it's been like what, seven years since Chris Patix looked awesome, I would guess he's pitching for his job on Friday, and I'm gonna take the not having his job side of that. - It still seems so weird that an organization as cash-trapped as the Marlins spent, what, it was like $6 million on Chris Patix. - I get the idea of just get some guaranteed innings because you can never have too much pitching, but-- - But they seem kind of smart now, like they've done some good things. - Yeah, I-- - I don't get that one. - Yeah. - I don't know. - That's a good thing. - They still regret trading him for Fernando Rodney back in the day and wanted to do over. I understand it's a different regime and everything, but we gotta see this Patix thing through, guys. - Yeah, they're trying to-- - He was ours first. - Trying to write that wrong. Didn't they trade Luis Castillo back in the day too? - Yeah, Luis Castillo was like, I wanna say they traded him twice, actually if I'm remembering the way that worked out correctly, 'cause he was like, part of a trade that got walked back because of someone failed a physical and then they traded him again or something. It was-- - That sounds right. - Yeah, it was. They could not get rid of that guy fast enough. (laughs) Carlos Estevez will begin a Rehab Assignment at AAA on Tuesday. Joe Boyle will begin a Rehab Assignment at AAA on Wednesday. He is a deeper name to watch now that Ryan Pepeo is out for the season. Quinn Priester has been pulled off his Rehab Assignment due to shoulder soreness. Tommy Edmund had his Rehab paused after feeling soreness in his surgically repaired ankle. The Braves activated Sean Murphy and DFA to Jonah Heim. I believe he was traded to the athletics. And the Giants kids were both up and in the lineup, Bryce Eldridge hit seventh in the lineup. He went over two with a walk and a strikeout. Jesus Rodriguez was eighth and he went over three as well. The White Sox Breakout Believo meter. Definitely not too long of a name. We spoke extensively about Davis Martin, but if we had to put a number on it. One to 10. 10, you believe exactly what this guy is doing. He is a breakout. One, you do not believe it at all. You can't get him off your team soon enough. Where is Davis Martin? On the breakout Believo meter. I will say somewhere in the four to six range. I'm going to go, that's the coward's range, isn't it? I was thinking for myself, but yeah. Yeah. I'll go five and a half. Two. Ooh. All right. Let's talk about Muna Takamura Kami, who went three for four with a walk. And his 14th home run, which tied the league lead once again with Aaron Judge. He's got the batting average up to 240. He's got a 377 on base percentage, 961 OPS. Three true outcomes continuing on. I mean, quality of contact is amazing. The expected stats pretty much by what he's doing. How much do you buy? More Kami, one to 10 on the breakout Believo meter. All right. So he has like a 9.610 OPS right now, I think. So one for that. I do not think this is a 9.610 OPS bat. I think you're missing the spirit here, Chris. But I think I generally believe that Muna Takamura Kami is a good hitter. I think it's probably more like a 220 batting average. And it's probably more like an 8.50 OPS. But I think it's a 40-homer guy. Or at least one of the more likely players to hit 40 homers. It's really hard to do that. I think he's really good. I don't-- like, he hit a homer off a 98-mile-hour fastball on Monday. That was above the strike zone. It was not a bad pitch. I know there's been a lot of like, oh, he's only hitting bad pitches for homers. Well, he didn't today. And either way, like, you're supposed to do that. Well, right. This is one of those dumb things. I know, like, I would see a lot of Red Sox fans on Twitter. They do that on a judge. But what's-- Yeah, when Aaron Judge was hitting his 63 homeruns, they're like, yeah, but it's all mistake pitches. It's like, cool. Pitchers make mistakes. What are you guys seeing this? I don't know. Like, dumb, like, I don't know, like, oh, the fan account Twitter has completed. Yeah, that whole thing. Brew in baseball. I think Frank and I are probably thinking of like the exact same account. OK. But yeah, people do this, where it's like, ooh, hit a pitch, it's not a mistake. And it's like, don't make a mistake. I used to do this with Marlins fans all the time when Stanton was there. And they'd be like, why do pitchers ever throw anything but sliders outside of the strike zone to him? And it's like, because you can't do that every time. That's really hard to do. And if you miss, he's going to hit it 480 feet. Like, that's-- I'm going to tell you where it comes. The criticism was he can't hit MLB heat. Well, he has multiple homers off 98 plus mile an hour fastballs this season. I think he's the only player in baseball to do that. That was one of the criticisms. And look, he's going to strike out a lot. He's going to swing in Missalot. But he mostly makes phenomenal swing decisions. And he mostly knows what he can and can't hit. And that doesn't mean he's not going to swing in Missalot because he does swing in Missalot. His in-zone contact rate is like 69%. It's really bad. But Joey Gallo used to make this work. And I think that's what we're looking at with the Minotaur from Erkami. He's going to have his flaws. And he's going to hit probably 220, 225. And maybe on the lower end, there's going to be some 200 seasons. But I think the power's absolutely jitt. I do not think anybody is-- we're not going to-- this is not a-- I mean, age myself here. This is not an Eric Tames or a Chris Shelton situation where he's going to completely bust after a hot start. I think Murakami is going to slow down. But I think he's like an eight on this ometer. The craziest part-- I was going to go eight as well. I was going to say the craziest part about this-- the Murakami profile so far is that he actually is destroying fastballs. He has a 54% with rate on breaking pitches and 55% on off speed. So my guess is he will start to see more breaking and off-speed pitches. And then we will have to see the adjustment there from Murakami's. But I think in terms of your expectation, Chris, I think that's pretty fair. Like, 23850 OPS, like, 35 to 40 homeruns. I think that's all a pretty fair expectation. I would still take the under on the batting average. I mean, even today he entered-- he entered today at 223. And that's what this hottest he's been. He doesn't have an extra base hit that's not a homerun. Hey, untrue. Oh, he got one tonight for having a double today. OK. Show some respect. But yeah, I think there was a scenario where he just fell flat on his face. And the White Sox couldn't play him anymore. And clearly, I think he's cleared that hurdle at this point. And while I think he'll be a player of extremes, sort of like Joey Gallo was when Joey Gallo was worth caring about, the power out pit would be high enough. It'll be one of those extremes. And it'll be enough that you go ahead and start him everywhere. The last name I want to bring up here is someone we really have not talked about. And it's Miguel Vargas, who went two for five with his 7th home run. He's only hitting 228. But he has a 360 on base percentage, 7 homers, 5 steals in 807 OPS, nearly as many walks as strikeouts. And Scott, I remember you were a big fan of Vargas, the prospect when he was coming up. And he was a high end prospect. And it was really that plate discipline and his ability to hit line drives that really kind of put him on the map. And we're finally starting to see that level of plate discipline. And look, the line drives-- all right, it's a lot of fly balls and pulled fly balls. So I think that'll keep the batting average down somewhat. But in terms of just like the plate discipline and a little bit of power and speed, he's kind of putting it together here. So where is Miguel Vargas on the breakout believe ometer? So he's only like a 3 1/2 for me. And I've struggled to rank him because I see how high his point-sleep production in particular is with all those walks. And look, if he continues to do exactly what he's doing,
then that'll obviously not be a good look. Me putting them at only three and a half here, but I think it relies on him having this outlier walk rate, which he's never shown in the majors before. I think it relies on him being an impactful base stealer, which is fast enough to be, but he's never shown the ability to do that in the majors before. And in terms of the actual quality of contact, the way he ankles the ball off the bat, all that stuff is pretty much in line with what we've seen from him previously. So as a hitter, I don't know that he's improved. It's really just the walks and the steals. And both of those are so much higher. Like they're at a level that only the best hitters at doing those things reach that level. And I think it's a stretch to say that Miguel Vargas is gonna be able to sustain that all season. Could he be 2025 Matt Chapman? Chapman was 21 homers, nine steals, 231 batting average, generally pretty useful player, but not a superstar. That seems reasonable to me. And at a weak third base position. Yeah, I think he's a corner in fielder, starting third baseman in a pinch, but probably not an impact guy. I don't think. I think I would take the over on the nine steals. Again, he is fast enough to do it. And I'm talking moving forward. If he's already got five, I think, or six. I think he can get to like 15 this year. Not, I'm not like, obviously he paces out for much more than that right now, but can he get 10 more steals the rest of the way? Like, I think that's possible. There's always been room for Lordescarre Yale, you know? Yeah. It's just, it's a boring player. I think Miguel Vargas is probably a pretty boring player, but I think he's a useful one. So I'll give him a four and three quarters. I'll give him a six. I'm not completely like all the way in, but I am a little bit more optimistic. I think here, I think there's a little bit more room for the batting average to come up a little bit. Maybe the walks come down, but like a 240, 340 OBP, 350 OBP, 20 Homer, 15 steel guy, and okay, white stock slide up. Like, yeah, I think that's a, I think that's pretty good player. So I'm optimistic here on Miguel Vargas. Let's go the other way now. Did we get hit with the four, two? Jose Soriano against those white socks. Four innings, eight hits, five runs, three walks. Two Homer's allowed. He has not completed six innings in four straight, and over his last two starts. Fourteen hits, eight runs, six walks. Four Homer's allowed, over nine innings pitched. Chris, did we get hit with a, don't get me first. Scott, did we, go to me first, it's fast. Chris, did we get hit with a, fool you? Well, what, like, who's being fooled? Because we stopped at around 40th in moving Jose Soriano up in our rankings. I think I have, I think I have my 30th. Every, like, it's funny because we started out, yeah, look, there's these doing some interesting things. Yeah, this, this might be a better version of Jose Soriano than we've seen before. Yeah, certainly he's must roster and all that. And I still think that's true, but there came a point where it was like, how do you have Jose Soriano so low? You're way undervaluing him. He's like a top 10 pitcher, and it's like, well, he walks too many guys. He's, he's that, that, and that. Yes, adding a four seamer and emphasizing the split or more have made him a better swing in mispitcher. A better strikeout pitcher have given him a higher ceiling. But the ceiling can only be so high when you walk as many guys as he does, and the inefficiency that comes with it, the four straight starts less than six sitting. So I think, like he, he's had a 28% whiff rate on his sinker. That's not real. It's just, that's just not like, I think Luis Castillo might have done that a few times or something close, but like generally speaking, sinker whiff rates of 18% are really good. And he has walked three or more batters, I think in five of eight starts now. And four of his last five? Yeah, four of his last five. And now the strikeouts are starting to go away. And so it's like, is Jose Sori, I'll just repeat what Scott said in slightly different words. Is Jose Soriano a better pitcher than he was last year? Yes, probably. But he was like the 75th ranked pitcher for most of last season in our rankings. He would fluctuate sometimes. We had a couple of double digit strikeout starts where the splitter was looking really good. And we go, Jose Soriano is figuring it out. And I just, we have seen stretches where he looks really, really good before. I needed to see more than four or five starts. And I think what we're seeing is a little regression to the mean. There's nothing wrong with being a top 40 starting pitcher. There are only roughly 40 top 40 starting pitchers at any given moment. And Jose Soriano was one of them. That's in the whole world. That's really good. But yeah, it's just like, if you're insisting that Jose Soriano is a top 20 starting pitcher than no. I'm not, yes, I think you got fooled. But that doesn't mean he's useless. I think he's good. Yeah, look, there was always going to be regression, right? Like even after this rough stretch of two starts, his IRA is 174. Like, there's still going to be more regression. He's just, he's not going to be a sub to a IRA pitcher the rest of the season. And you know, he gets in trouble with walks and heart contact and those two things combined. Usually are not a very good recipe. Kind of like you do with a, not that he's young, but like with a young hitter, once he struggles, you kind of want to see him adjust to the adjustment. And now I want to see how Jose Soriano bounces back from this. And honestly, I got him up to like, S-feet 31 of my rankings because I didn't know who else to put there. I mean, that's true. A lot of those injured guys and stuff like that. Yeah, like the top 30 and even like, yeah, there's, we're starting to see some warts in the back in there, right? Like Kyle Bradish, we still like, but like, all right, man, we got to see something eventually. So yeah, it was just like, all right, who else deserves to be S-P 31? Nobody else? All right, I'm going to move Soriano up to that spot. So I think he's talented, but now we have to see how he adjusts to this little recent rough stretch. Randy Vaskiz finished one out short of a quality start at the Angels 5 and 2/3 innings, 3 runs, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts. The velocity remains up, but over his last four starts now, it's a 498-ERA, a 125-wip under a strikeout per inning. Did we hit with the-- For you. Randy Vaskiz. I mean, it's unfortunate that he had a two-start week, theoretically, week seven. He was in mind to make two-start. So it's like, well, I guess we should try out this Randy Vaskiz thing. And then I guess something happened. They inserted a spot starter or whatever. It got pushed back to another two-start week here in week seven. So it's like-- I mean, he's kind of losing steam, but he's in line for two-start. So let's go for it. The likeliest outcome is always regression to the me. And I don't think those small signs of growth we were seeing from Vaskiz were enough to bet against regression to the me. It's just-- I got to fill out a pitching staff. And this guy has been pitching wells, doing some things a little bit different. Maybe, you know, if the matchups are right, I'll give him a shot. So that was always where I stood with Vaskiz. And I think that's running out now. And I think after hopefully he makes that second start this week, or maybe hopefully not. And then we can move on. Look, there are only roughly 90 top 90 starting pitchers in the whole world. There's nothing wrong with being a top 90 starting pitcher in the world. I never moved Randy Vaskiz much higher than that. So again, I think it can be useful, especially at home, usually. But I don't think Randy Vaskiz is a great pitcher. No, I think it's-- he's, I don't know, a 390-ERA guy and maybe a decent whip. There's value in that. But it's not a must-roster or must-start pitcher certainly. The last name on the fool you list here is JR Richie, who at the Mariners really struggled to throw strikes. He had six walks over five innings here, five plus innings. He came out for the sixth where things kind of fell apart there for him. I believe he was pitching in front of like friends and families from the area there in Seattle and Washington. So perhaps nerves got the best of him here. But after that first start, he now has 10 walks over his next two starts. And it's got-- you would know better than I would. I'm not even sure that he makes another start after this. Oh, I don't know. But that would be my guess, too. I think he gave them-- I think he gave them a good excuse to send him down with this start and hold on to Martin Perez, who they would have to designate for assignment if they were to let him go. Richie, they can just stash away at Triple A. He should not have control problems. But even prior to the 51% strike rate in this start, it was 59% in the first two. It's just not thrown enough strikes. Not trusting in his stuff enough. And I think he still has a--
a fine future. And probably that future will begin at some point later this year. But my guess is he doesn't end up making the second start. He was scheduled for because the braids decide to keep Martin Perez around when they cut down, cut back down to a five-man rotation. So. So. So. On the full-do you, O-meter? Yeah, on the full-do. At least in the short term. I still think. Yeah. Yeah. This is not a guy with overwhelming stuff. He needs to be a pitch ability guy and he has 10 walks in his last 10 and thirds innings. So. Yeah. I think it's pretty easy to let him go now. I think there's a chance that he will have value again at some point this season. But I, I think if anybody else emerges with a decent amount of upside, you could probably drop Randy Vasquez or J. R. Ritchie for whoever the next emergent pitcher is. Let's take that final break when we return. We'll talk some waiver wire hitters, pitchers, and I've got fun with arbitrary endpoints right after this. Welcome back in fantasy and baseball today. Let's talk waiver wire hitters from Monday's action and Jack Caglione still out there in some shallow leagues and hit his fourth home run. All four have come in his last 16 games where he's hitting 283. His OPS is over 900 during that time 95.4 average EV and an 18% barrel rate. It might be happening guys and I'm just, if he was dropped in a shallow league, I think I would, I would jump back on here with with Caglione. Yeah, I hope so. I am getting deja vu all over again looking at Jack Caglione's faith, a Facebook page. That even has a Facebook page. He's too young for that. Talking them on Facebook's cat. Yeah, Jack Caglione on his baseball Savon page and seeing all that red, seeing those ridiculous exit velocities, look, the pull air rate is okay. Strike out rate is way up from a year ago, so that's a problem. But still, like he should be producing better than he has and maybe it is starting finally. What's hurting him is both that he tends to sit against left handers and he's in a lineup that's been really bad. So the run and RBI production has been awful. Eight on the season. Eight RBI is out that is eight RBI 14 runs. It's not great. I mean, yeah, at some point we do need the royals lineup to wake up the slash line is looking solid now. But the overall production is still lacking. And so like three outfielder leagues, I don't know that there's any reason to pursue Caglione at this point, but obviously five outfielder leagues. I doubt he was dropped at five outfielder leagues. Is the thing. Did you guys, did you guys know this is like a jet bush situation? That's not his name. Yeah, just officials. Yeah. Okay. Oh, yeah. It's actually heard this somewhere. It's like it's Jeffrey Allen Caglione, right? Yeah. Find that weird. Yeah, it's weird. It's just surprising. I just not know that about jet bush. I think that might be I might have made that up. But I don't think that is his real name. A couple of other young outfielder's Carson Benj slowly coming around last 11 games. He's hitting over 300 with two home runs. Quality of contact looks good during that spin. And Sam Antonacci was moved up to lead off. He responded well. He went two for four with a walk and two runs scored. Chris, who do you like more between the young outfielder's? Carson Benj or Sam Antonacci? Job for a more rest of development. It is Josh Ellis. Ellis Bush is Jeb. So another one. Yeah. Georgia Oscar. Yeah. Yeah. Um, I don't care for Job. Carson Benj, I prefer to say Antonacci. And the biggest thing is just Sam Antonacci's not running yet. And I don't know when that's going to come because he's hitting pretty well. I think he's going to get on base a decent amount. But the whole profile doesn't really work if he's not running because otherwise it's just I don't know it's changed my draw. And he's a pretty boring player. So I think we need to see Sam Antonacci. And he was a very active bass runner in the minors. And Carson Benj is already doing that. So I will, I will give Carson Benj the continued edge over Sam Antonacci. I mean, I prefer Benj to Antonacci too, just because I think he's capable of so much more. But Antonacci expected batting averages up to 321. Expected slug is 506. And you know how steals are. I mean, yeah. A guy will steal nothing for two or three weeks and then suddenly steal five bases in the span of a few games. So I imagine that's coming for Antonacci. And so I am excited about the ways trending. But Benj is just a higher end prospect. Casey Schmidt making an argument to remain in the Giants lineup. He went one for three with a walk in his fifth home run. He started at third base in this game. They gave Matt Chapman the night off. But on most nights, I just don't really know where Casey Schmidt is going to play other than like giving a guy a day off here and there. Yeah. But is that enough? Is that still enough to matter for them? They said they still view him as it every day player. Just yeah. Today he spelled Matt Chapman tomorrow. He'll spell Devers or I rise or the problem with that is he's going to slow down eventually. Yeah. And then will you don't miss and Rafael Devers are going to heat up eventually. And I think Bryce Eldritch is going to be pretty good. And so I do think there's going to be a squeeze at some point here for Casey Schmidt. But right now, look, as a hot hand player who's eligible everywhere, I think he's going to keep playing and you might as well just keep riding him somewhere because first, second, third eligibility, you probably have a need somewhere. So I think he's a fine pickup and an ad. This feels pretty niche. I don't know how many leagues like this exist out there. But if you played in like a slightly deeper daily lineup league, like maybe Roto size lineups or something like that. And you actually pay attention like, yeah, just throw Casey Schmidt in there whenever he's in the lineup. And you know, he's he's hitting really well. He's over 300. He's on a 900 OPS right now. So I would guess at least until until Bryce Eldritch proves that this no longer needs to be this way. I would guess Casey Schmidt has an automatic spot against left handers because he just starts over Eldritch those days. Three hitters in deeper leagues. JP Crawford, one for three with two walks in his third home run over his last six games. He has seven hits two homers and a steal. JJ Bladeh hit his third home run 112.6 exit velocity. And in seven games with the reds, he is hitting 300 with three homers. I think he's going to play against right hand pitching for the time being. And he, you know, once upon a time had some value. And Zach Cole is back with the Astros one for four with his first home run, which came off of Yoshi noble Yamamoto in 15 games last year with the Astros 255 four homers three steals power and speed in the minors also a ton of striker. So in deep release, any interest JP Crawford JJ Bladeh is at Cole. So I am kind of interested in Bladeh here. I know he's been around a while and never amounted to much. She is a former very hydraphic. And he had a huge spring 317 with four homers, his triple A production, 341 with six homers. And now he's off to a hot start here in the majors. He's walking a ton with reach base at a 462 clip in the minors. I don't know how much he's going to play against lefties. And so it would have to be a pretty deep league. I probably a five outfielder league for me to actually move toward adding Bladeh at this rate. But I'm at least as interested in him as I am Casey Schmidt, I would say. Yeah, I think it's five outfielders 15 teams is probably where I'm interested. But yeah, there's plenty of those leagues out there. Yeah, I picked them up in Towers, which is exactly that and desperate for outfield help. And he could be that. You know, once upon a time, JJ Bladeh back in 2024 with the athletics hit 243 with a 324 on base and 20 homeruns and a 120 WRC plus he was 20% better than league average eight years. So I mean, clearly there is some capability here to be a solid offensive player. Now we just need the opportunity and right now he's getting that. So and somebody in the chat points out I hadn't looked at this yet, but a big jump in average bat speed of three miles per hour. I will point out with JP Crawford. He's just one of those players that the profile works better in points leagues, but he's not good enough to play in points leagues. Yeah, like a deeper point. Yeah, so like if you play a 15 team point sleeve, like like my Towers league is points with Roto rosters. Even there, you're probably not using him, but I think you can at least make the case for it because he walks a lot. He gets on base as a middle league. He'll leave off lately. Yeah, as a middle infielder, like I've been using Marcosimian in that league. JP Crawford might not be worse than Marcosimian in that league. Yeah, so shout out once again to who pointed out the bat speed, but yet it's up three miles per hour. His fast swing percentage J.J. Blade up from 15% to 43% so far. So yeah, that's what I mean. Like it's been consistent. Spring miners majors, like something. Yeah, it seems like something's improved here. Weaver wire pitchers and mostly varied
deep league names here, but Janssen Junk was solid against the Phillies. Five and a third innings one run six strikeouts to zero walks. He has allowed one earned run total over his last three outings. Kind of lay he two solid outings in a row here. Five and a third one run five strikeouts for him. Trevor McDonald was called up to start for the Giants and he pitched very well. Seven innings one run eight strikeouts to zero walks and tie Madden pitched well in bulk relief for the Tigers. Five shut out seven strikeouts does have some prospect pedigree and could have an opportunity now with Terks Google on the IL. So Chris mostly deep league names here, but do you have any interest in a tie Madden Trevor McDonald, Kyle Leahy or Janssen Junk? McDonald Madden have both been awful at AAA throughout their career. So I think it's pretty unlikely that these starts meant much. I'm kind of interested in Janssen Junk. I think he's a guy and you know, usually we're like a derogatory just a guy. But in this case, we're talking about a guy who's 34% rostered and I think just a guy can get him to like 60% roster. I think Janssen Junk has some interesting skills. He's got a high vert fastball with a good vertical approach angle and all those things that, you know, the models and metrics all love him. He's got really, really great control. He's getting a decent number of whiffs with the secondaries at times. I don't think he's great, but I don't think it's a total fluke. The Janssen Junk is finding success here. I think he's there was a point where I thought the Marlins just take him out of the rotation. I didn't think there was much point in having him in the rotation. I think I was wrong there. I think Janssen Junk's a legit majorly pitcher. And the problem is mediocre to bad team that has a short leash with him. He has one start of six innings this season and I think he only threw like 73 pitches in that one. He had the pit, the start a couple of weeks ago where he threw, I think it's Houston. He threw like 56 pitches. Yeah. And five shut out innings or something. It was very weird. I don't know if it was against Houston, but it was a very good start where he got pulled after five innings and like 56 pitches. And I think that's going to be the thing because his second and especially third time through the order numbers throughout his career have been very bad. But I do think Junk is a little better than he's been in the past and is a useful pitcher for fantasy. And to your point about the stuff metrics, the pitcher list score card, pitcher card gave this start a an a minus for stuff for Janssen, Junk. So I don't know. I don't see all that, but there's something there. I think is the takeaway. Scott, do people have your blessing to drop these two pitchers? Shane Boz, another rough outing and Tanner Bible. Look to be turning things around, but he he just kind of feels like a jag man. Derogatory. Yes. Not in the Janssen, Junk. Optimistic kind of. Shane Boz and Janssen, Junk are in the middle. They're they're boats passing in the water or whatever that book is. Yeah. Boz for sure. There have been no encouraging signs for him and they were few and far between last year too. By the I'd be okay with it. And Shalow league because I even if even if he figures it out, I'm not confident the upside is is such such a actually miss him. He was trending a good direction. Previous three starts were good. It seems like when he throws his cutter more. Honestly, he needs to throw his fastballs last both the the four seemer and the sinker. He normally throws them about 39% of the time. It was 45% of the time. I noticed he'd been that number had been trending lower during that three start stretch where he had some success. So maybe maybe there is a path like at least I see a path for Bobby in a way I don't for Boz. And so it's fine to drop by be. But I'd be a little more hesitant when Boz. It's just like anybody interesting I drop before. All right. Some fun with arbitrary end points. I'll just read off a stat line over the past couple weeks or past couple days. And if you have a thought, let's go for it. Jaren to ran over his last 12 games. He's hitting two 60 with three homers, three steals. Great quality of contact. Good science got after we were pretty worried about Jaren to ran. Yeah, he looks the same. Duran himself. It's just the playing time has not been the same. So looking back at recent lefties, the red socks have faced. He is sat against three of the last looks like five that they face, which is not good. I mean, that that would suggest Duran is still not an everyday player for the red socks. But the better he performs, the more likely that is to change. And again, I don't think his actual performance is anything to be discouraged about. It's just the playing time. Yeah. I do think if Roman Anthony has to go in the aisle, that's probably good news for Jaren to ran's playing time. Jonathan Oranda over his last 15 games is hitting three 40 with four home runs, 13 RBI, and a 983 OPS. The expected stats don't buy it as much, but I think Arana's a legit good hitter. So I am willing to look past the expected stats there for Jonathan Oranda. Jazz is running wild. Last 11 games, 293 with three home runs, three steals, and OPS over 900 during that time. He's hitting the ball really hard as well during that span. He said he didn't enjoy the cold weather. And maybe that was it. We're starting to heat up and so I enjoy cold weather. So it's jazz. Vinnie Payne. I probably shouldn't have moved out of Florida. Yeah. I remember you said you guys got like you guys got snow multiple times this year. Yeah. You sent me pictures and during the winter of like you guys playing in the snow. I was like, this must have so far and for you. It was. Yeah. No, my understanding is it's it's not that common in South Carolina. It's happened to be one of those wonders. Vinnie Payne. Baby slowly waking up last nine games. He is at 367 with two home runs and hitting the ball much harder during that stretch. Maybe just finally getting past that back injury that was plaguing him there. Say Suzuki last 12 games for him 391 with six home runs. He has been awesome since returning from injury. JJ weather hole over his last 19 274 six homeers 17 runs only one steel like to me like to see more steals during that time. But OPS is over a thousand during that stretch hitting the ball hard. Lots of fly balls, which I find interesting for weather hold that that wasn't a huge part of his profile in the minors, but you know, perhaps looking to get to get tap into more power so far. And we have seen exactly that from JJ weather holds. So fun with arbitrary end points. South Stewart. That's right. That's South Stewart. His previous seven games before Monday, he was two for 28 071 batting average, one extra base hit. Only a 17% strikeout rate during that span. Groundball rates a little bit elevated, but I think it's mostly bad luck if he was striking out like 30% during that stretch. I would be more nervous about it. Have you guys see you? Can you get? I think it's fine to put it that way. Yes, I would feel a little worse about it if he was striking out more, but honestly, even if he was striking out more, it's just the ebb and flow of the season. I mean, I think he's proven his skill set is legitimate and durable and like, you think you understand what's strange. I'm trying to come off my bed. Just play the South Stewart drop because I still have that level of enthusiasm for him. I was going to make a request that we get like the, you know, when Mario dies and it's like, what? We should get that one for when he's slumping. That was just fair play. No, look, part of his just, he was an 840 OPS bat last season. He's an 842 OPS bat now. That might be what he is. And that's an awesome player because he's going to steal 15 plus bases and, you know, he's got a great lineup spot and a great home park and like, it just might be a situation where it's, it depends on what the expectations were. If you thought South Stewart was going to be one of the 15 best hitters in baseball, yeah, you might be worried right now. But my expectations never quite quite that high. I think he's a good hitter. I'm not sure he's an elite hitter and that's okay. But I don't know. Maybe you guys thought he was a lead hitter. I still think he's an elite hitter. Yeah. And he's actually now underperforming his expected stats. So he's hitting 252, but his XBA is 279. I just wanted to be fair and let people acknowledge that we don't only talk about South Stewart when he's doing good things. Oh, we have to talk about when he's slumping a little bit as well. But Scott says to believe. There you go. What is wrong with Logan Gilbert? Six innings. My Mario didn't talk for, and I don't know these phrases that well. You never played anything like that.
64 Mario I played a little bit like I played Mario card on it. Yeah, Mario car Mario party smash brothers Yeah, but the app much and smash brothers. I guess he does I don't know he wasn't I mean if you know I was a big into Mario using Mario and smash brothers if you know Then you have to know I think those two go in a hand if you if you don't love me at my You don't deserve me at my All right, I'll be clipping that one out later. What's going on with Logan Gilbert? Six innings four runs four homers allowed against the Atlanta Braves He has just two quality starts in eight outings his four strikeouts or fewer in three straight Chris what are you seeing here with Logan Gilbert? I've got kind of like a galaxy brain take on Logan Gilbert, but there are really smart pitching people that I would love to like I keep trying to get someone who's smarter than me to to weigh in on my galaxy brain Theory and maybe the fact that none of them are responding is they all think I'm dumb for thinking it but I kind of worry He like tinkered his way out of What worked because Logan gober to guy who has always added and detracted pitches and There was a really funny story from this spring about how Apparently Logan Gilbert has been wanting to throw a cutter for years and Cal Rally just wouldn't let Mario there with you right now No, that's that's a little lemon and Cal Rally wouldn't let him throw his cutter and Then I think it was the first start that Logan Gilbert made when Cal Rally went to the world baseball classic He started throwing his cutter and I think it's also the sinker has been officially buried but those are the two pitches the Cal Rally wouldn't let him throw and The weird thing is if you look at the models if you look at the results the cutter and change up to change up to the other new pitch They don't look like bad pitches the change up actually looks like a great pitch is gonna 40% with rate 87% per mile per hour average exit velocity It's just What was the point of adding a cutter and change up like Logan Gilbert was not a pitcher that I looked at and thought You know what this guy really needs is another off-speed pitch and another pitch to get lefty's out like he's not a big platoon split sky um and I just worry that the The cutter in particular you know, I think Carlis Rodeon was the guy who had this struggle where the cutter kind of messed with his feel for the four seamer and slider and I don't know if that's what we're seeing with Gilbert, but That is my galaxy brain. I just I don't think that's I don't think that's a galaxy brain Like that's that's kind of my presumption to yeah, I think he's trying to just throw too many pitches. Yeah, that's what I think Yeah, it's really hard to be a simpler picture like and he doesn't need to be yeah now You know so many so many of the smartest Pitching analysts out there are really into like pitch modeling and breaking down on a granular level The way the pitches play and so I don't know that they're looking at it at the 30,000 foot view we're looking at it But I see it the same way you do Chris. I don't I don't think it's I don't think it's a bizarre take it all Couple there pitching leftovers here Nick Martinez solid against the blue J's five innings one run four strikeouts Aronola bounce back at the Marlin six shut out with five strikeouts for him Can slitler finished one out short of a quality start five and two thirds one run four strikeouts to three walks His velocity was up like 1.5 to two miles per hour across the board And I think it just kind of messed with his control this one So cam you're perfect the way you are. We don't need more velocity Michael walk a back on track seven innings two runs with three strikeouts and Yamamoto turned in a quality start at the Astros six innings three runs with a season high eight strikeouts and 17 whiffs on 95 pitches Scott anything that stood out here to you for Yamamoto Waka Schlitler Aaronola and Nick Martinez Well, this was Nola's best start of the year was this third quality start. It was his second good start really And as fastball had a lot more carry on it Higher induced aerotica break less drop That would be cool if he could repeat that I have no reason to believe he will I still think he is somebody who is on the chopping block in fantasy He did line up for two starts with good matchups this week and he did get at my sleeper pitchers So let's point that out, but Yeah, I still remain skeptical of Aronola long term unless he can continue the trick with the fastball Waka had a good start to truck out three had just two whiffs I don't know how much I care because it's Michael walk on my expectations are only so high anyway. That's not really his game to miss a lot of bats and He's not somebody that I consider anywhere close to must start anyway. I think he is On the high end of Fringe pitchers and has been for a few years now and so It just struck me his odd two whiffs. I mean that's Most pitchers going to get away with that But you know that's hard to only that's just I guess I'm just saying don't get too comfortable with Michael walk Maybe his pretty gets two outings were enough to tell you that but I would say even after this good one Don't get too comfortable. He's fine. Don't get too comfortable I do want to jump in just with the automotive a strikeout rate's been down this season So it's good to see him get a strikeouts and 17 whiffs in this one Yeah, I don't really think there's anything is actually like right in line with last year Yeah, I don't think there's much reason to worry about Yamamoto It's just good to see him get the strikeouts here that I just wanted to note that the call to the bullpen for the match Devon Williams picked up his fourth save and that is four straight scoreless appearances for him So that was much needed for the red socks overall this Chapman picked up his seventh save for the raise Brian Baker entered with two outs in the ninth two runners on a four-run lead He got the final out for his ninth save for the Phillies Yoan Doran was not activated yet So it was Brad Keller who picked up his second save for the Cardinals Riley I think it's Tuesday Doran's coming back. Yep for the Cardinals Riley O'Brien picked up his tenth save for the Reds Emilio Pagan came on with a one-run lead in the ninth he immediately gave up a lead-off triple to PCA Then a sack fly and then a walk-off home run. He took his third blown save and first loss He is up to a 643 ERA a 143 whip. He has allowed runs in two of his last three In three of his last four outings I'm trying to figure out who could be next up here like Tony San Tony Santine and Graham Ashcraft They both have good numbers on the surface, but like Also, both are over five walks per night. So I mean, they're not perfect either So no, but Santine's been a lockdown setup man for a few years now, so I imagine I imagine he would get the first shot If they did move on for Pagan and I think it's worth discussing at this point. I mean Pagan Seemed like someone who was getting away with it last year and It turns out he won't either he won't he won't But you know Terry Frankona has a lot of trust in the Reds organization as a whole paying him $10 million this year Has a lot of trust in him so I don't know that they'll be so quick to pull the plug But it's to the point now in these worse saves are scarce. I would want to have Tony Santine stashed I do think that PCA triple was Misplayed by the outfielder. It was a tough play. It was like he was going up against the ivy But I think he did looked like he got his glove on it If not it was very close so I It look he's still here a ball run right after that. So it would have been a blown save either way right right I was trying to Look up video of it real quick, but I can't find it in time So I can't do for the Mariners and Andreas Munoz picked up his seven save and for the Giants Maybe Caleb Killian is the answer to the question. He got the ninth with a two-run lead He allowed a solo homer, but he struck out two for his first save and His velocity is up 3.3 miles per hour so far this season last year 93.6 this year 96.9 He's he's walking too many, but he also is getting a decent amount of whiff so We're trying to find out who in San Francisco and maybe it's killing a billion So well Eric Miller just went on the aisle the left hander. He's gotten a couple saves already So he's out of the running for a while Keaton win Who's been the one I've been betting on had a perfect eighth leading up to this ninth for Caleb Killian But I would imagine this outing puts Killian ahead in the pecking order probably if I had to and Be invested in one Giants reliever it would still be Ryan Walker But I I don't have a lot of confidence that's gonna hold it all I think the the cracks are Beyond just showing I think they're About to break the whole thing apart To stream or not to stream on Tuesday we have Severino at the Phillies Chris Bassett at the Marlin
against the twins, Elma Rodriguez against the Rangers, Andrew Abbott at the Cubs, James and Tyone against the Reds, Brandon Sprote at the Cardinals, Eric Fettie at the Angels and Water Rodriguez home against the Pirates. - How do we talk about before? I think we said Kate Cavali. - Was it Cavali, Tyone? - Tyone and then Severino. - Severino, Bassett. I think our interesting Sprote, I think it's mildly interesting. - Yeah, I'd probably say Cavali, Tyone, Severino. - Even Elma Rodriguez against the Rangers isn't horrible. - Yeah, he just faced him in his first start too, so back to back starts don't love that. But I mean, yeah, their lineup is not, is pretty bad. So I could see that one working out. On Wednesday, we have Patrick Corbin at the Raise Matthew Liberator, home against the Brewers, Christian Scott at Colorado, Grant Holmes at the Mariners, Jeffrey Springs at the Phillies, Billy Ober at the Nationals, and Brady Singer and Colin Ray are going up against each other. - Grant Holmes at Seattle, maybe, Bailey Ober at Washington, I really don't like either. - Those are the two that I was leaning. Can we find a third? Can we find a third, Scott? - Oh, Colin Ray against the Reds. - Jeffrey Springs at Philly, and with the way the Phillies offense has been going, that's probably not bad either. - Yeah, I'd probably say Holmes Ober Springs in that order four Wednesday. We ran out of time, so no team name Tuesday today, but I'll round up a bunch and we'll get to you next week. We are going to wrap there for Scott and Chris. I am Frank, thanks as always for tuning in to Fantasy Baseball today. Please make sure to follow and leave a five star rating on Apple or Spotify, and we will be back again tomorrow. Bye-bye. Take it away, John. - Yankees win. - The Yankees win. [music]
Podcast Summary
Key Points:
Davis Martin's breakout is questioned due to underlying metrics (low swinging strike rate, high hard contact, poor ERA estimators), despite strong recent results like 7 shutout innings and 10 strikeouts. He's a "play the hot hand" option, not a reliable long-term asset.
Peyton Tolley bounced back with 7 innings, 0 earned runs, and 8 strikeouts, showing improved fastball velocity and a useful curveball. He appears capable of sticking in the rotation as a dependable starter.
Jackson Churio returned from a fractured hand with an impressive 4-for-4 performance, including exit velocities over 103 mph. He's a top-10 outfield prospect with potential for 30-30 production and a high batting average.
Key injuries include Tarik Skubal (elbow surgery, out 3 months), Hunter Brown (shoulder strain, return early June), Roman Anthony (wrist issue, seeing specialist), and Jordan Westburg (elbow discomfort, likely surgery).
Summary:
FAQs
Davis Martin has been impressive with a 1.64 ERA, but underlying metrics like a sub-10% swinging strike rate and high hard-contact rates suggest regression may come. He's a hot-hand play, not a proven ace.
Hunter Brown could throw a bullpen as soon as this weekend, with a tentative return timetable of early June, assuming no setbacks from his grade two right shoulder strain.
Jackson Churio went 4-for-4 with a walk, hitting multiple balls over 103 mph, showing he's healthy and poised to be a 20-20 or even 30-30 player this season.
Jordan Westberg has been shut down from throwing due to right elbow discomfort, and surgery for a UCL tear seems likely, ending his season.
If Chris Paddack misses time due to a velocity drop, Braxton Garrett could be called up to take his rotation spot.
Roman Anthony left early with right wrist discomfort; X-rays were negative, but he's seeing a hand specialist, which could lead to a stint on the injured list.
