And 12 years later, I'm still playing at that bar and I get fired. Johnny plays my best friend, Cash, and he fires me but he's like, I got another gig for you in Korea on this American Idol type show in Korea where you can be a part of the backing band. - Wow. - And I go to Korea and I don't know this but my son is one of the contestants and I find out because my ex shows up to pick him up and she's like, oh yeah, by the way, that's your son. I didn't tell you, I just went to Korea and had him and you guys figure it out from here. And so. - Wow. - And they go to the relationship. - Yeah, they go the way. - So pretty much goes from like me wanting to, you know, I end up not wanting to really just be a dad instead of just chasing my musicals. - Did you direct us? - I did. - Wow. - That crazy directorial debut. - Looks incredible. - Coco wrote it. - He co-wrote it. - Got it. - Wow. - How long were you out there shooting? - Man. - I was shooting, we shot in Korea for about three weeks. We shot in this, I mean, I shot everywhere in the States. We were like six weeks, did a couple weeks in Saudi Arabia. The whole, like, it's been five years in the making. - Wow. - Yeah, I started this during quarantine to go back, you know, my whole house was obsessed with BTS. - Yeah. - And every, yeah, my son's mom and my son were like, "Why aren't you BTS?" I'm like, "What the hell?" - All our parents are doing that apparently. - You know what I mean? I was like, "Man, you don't know about BTS. You don't know about BET?" (laughing) So I was like, "Damn, I was trying to do something that could make me look cool." And their eyes saw, I was like, "Oh, I'm gonna write a script for us." And maybe BTS will, you know, somehow notice. - Are there K-pop people in there? - Yes. - Like who? - Vernon from '17. We have Jay Park, we got Jesse, we got The Rose, we got Kevin Wu, who's like our main star villain in the movie. - A lot of cameos that we don't want to spoil. - Oh, okay. - But there's a lot of K-pop cameos in it. - Oh, there is. - And like, legacy artists like Earth, Wind, and Fire. - Yeah. - Park Franklin. - Park Franklin. - I think he's gonna give a way. - Oh yeah, he's gonna give a way. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. Tom Cruise. - Yeah, Tom Cruise is here at the top. - Yeah, he never goes with my- (laughing) (laughing) - Yeah, a lot of favors. A lot of favor. I owe a lot of people. - And the choreography. - Choreography. - In it. - Right. Like, what happened? Do you tell them or get it down and then we'll show- Are you there helping the choreography? - Yes, I had an awesome, his name was Nick Joseph, but I had him working on the choreography like months before in prep, and I had my son working with him months before. So, and he was, my son was doing acting classes and everything had acting teacher. So, yeah, and they did really well because a lot of these, the choreography parts, we didn't have a lot of time to do, and I was making the music as the movie was going, so I was trying to get good enough versions done that they could dance to it and stuff, and everybody was like super pro. - Now, as a first time director, do you have like a storyboard or are you going in blind? - I went in with a, like a treatment, and I had a rough idea that I got a treatment down for, but I kept, I knew I wanted to direct it, I wanted to co-write it, I didn't want anyone around my son, just I wanted it to be me and him. So, when I would take it to other places, they would be like, this is a cool idea, but we wanted to take it to a director, we wanted to take it to a writer, blah, blah, and I was like, no, I want to do it because all the movies that I grew up watching, I saw that they were the ones that wrote it, like Ice Cube and then we're writing Friday, and like, you know, all these different movies that I've seen, it starts with, you know, you just have to get in there and write it with your best friends, whatever. But I didn't have any background in writing a script, but I was down to learn, and I got what stamp, I told Demi, I was like frustrated, like I want to do this film, but no one believes I can do it, and so he was like, I got these guys that will probably be down for it, and-- - We found funding and-- - Yeah, stamp. - You're good at that too. - Yeah. - You're good at that. - Pitching. - It's connected to dots. - Yeah. I mean, you couldn't get funding for my documentary, but-- - For working. - Yeah, I did try to do this. - For working, yeah, he doesn't drop in the ball, but for him, very good. - Yeah, the process was a little easier for some reason. I don't know. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - It took years, man. It took a long time, man. Yeah, we finally got some initial funding from Stampede, and I brought them the treatment, and they were like, yeah, cool, we'll give you, you know, a couple of mills to do this, and I was like, great. Let's do it, and we ran out of money really quick, but then we had to get more money. Live Nation came in, and some Saudi Arabia, and you know. - Oh, wow, wow. - You know, so it was like a whole process, man, and they connected me with my co-writer, Kayla Amazon, who was like a godsend, 'cause she was obsessed with K-pop, so she really like took the idea, and really showed me how to write a script, and give it layers, and also taught us a lot about K-pop, and the whole thing, and how we can bridge it. And yeah, that we just sat in there, and worked, he was in there writing too, and I was also doing like, psilxonic with Bruno Mars, and so we were doing like, the residency, and then when I had time, I would go and write the script and do drafts, and I learned a lot. And, but you would decide to go and do a territory that you've never done anything, and you just did it. - Yeah. - You know, I think, that's a big lesson. - Yeah, it is. - Because most people are scared. - Yeah. - And they don't do it. - I will say that's one. big quality of his that I've been motivated by when I met him. Like, he doesn't think anything is out of our reach. Like, you know, he can like, oh, yeah. I met him. Why don't we get him for a thing? - Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. - And it's like, me, I'm just like, I laugh it off. Like, well, that's crazy. That's crazy to me. To him, he's never thought anything was crazy. And then he'll be like, why are you, why are you already like making a stop in us? Like, why are you already stopping this thing from happening by manifesting that? I didn't think it was gonna get this far like. - Oh, wow, wow. - I tried to get out of it and I was. - But if you have a good DP, you had a good DP, right? - Yeah, I mean, that was really what it was. And then he was like a veteran and everybody on set, the team was like, they knew it was my first movie. They took great care of me. And once I was really scared until I got on set, started doing it and it was like, oh, it was like creative bliss, it was sick. 'Cause you're just like in charge of getting to tell her, you know, it's like, let's see. - Did the DP ever go, no. - Yeah, that's why I hired him, right? When we were, he came in when we were, I was like trying to try out DP's, he came in talking about the script, like this doesn't make sense. We should do this, blah, blah. And I was like, whoa, you're hired. - Oh, I see, yeah. - And he was like, when we were on set, he's like, we're gonna do this, boom, blah. Like, I didn't know anything about like blocking and stuff. - Yeah. - And I knew how I wanted the dialogue to go and everything, but I forgot like, oh, how are we gonna block this for the camera and like, maybe we should walk and talk when we do this and all this stuff. And he was like, really good with helping me do it. I didn't have to think about lenses and all. He was like on it. - Wow. - 'Cause I'm in it, my son's in it. I'm like doing a lot of different stuff. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - Certain things just like, bro, help me. You know, he was all off with it. So I don't tell you why. - People don't realize that DP, 'cause I've been in a lot of movies with pretty good directors. And the DP goes, yeah, that's not gonna work. - Yeah, like DP has a lot to do with. - Absolutely. - Sure, yeah, sure. You know, you gotta get the right people. So you have to kind of like space stuff out and editing and everything and you think certain things are gonna work. Or you don't even think certain things are working. It's like working and-- - Wow, wow, wow. - We got to do a lot of screenings and change certain things too. - Wow. - Yeah, but it was, it's tough man, it's certain places. I mean, now it's gonna be, everyone's gonna see it. So we'll see, everyone's gonna have something to say. And you work five years on something and then someone's gonna turn it on and like in five seconds it's like, this trash.
