Iran-backed Houthi forces have seized Yemen's port city of Mocha, giving them greater control over the Bab al-Mandab Strait in the Red Sea. They've also launched attacks on the strategic islands of Hanish. The strait is a critical choke point for global shipping. Houthi control could give Iran a critical advantage in the war with the United States, adding even more upward pressure on oil prices that have topped $105 a barrel. High energy prices have contributed to the European Central Bank's decision to raise its key rate to 2.5 percent. The move by the ECB is an attempt to tamp down inflation largely driven by the widening conflict between the U.S. and Iran. Both the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan will be considering rate moves next week. The ECB also says inflation could average 3 percent this year and 2.5 percent in 2027. Recent growth data shows the Eurozone block is holding up better than anticipated, despite higher fuel costs. Researchers at AI giant Antanthropic are warning that artificial intelligence could wipe out humanity within the decade, with one resigning over it, saying the companies building this tech are gambling with our lives. Mike Dolan from our sister podcast Morning Bid has more. Will AI kill us all? I don't think anybody in financial markets can price the end of humanity. But what these apocalyptic warnings do point to, and I think we have seen many this year, including in the spring about mass depression and mass unemployment, and again, subsequently, about the wipeout of entire financial sectors. These warnings recur, but they point overwhelmingly to regulation of this new technology. And this is the real impact that can potentially be priced. Although in this geopolitical climate, it's hard to imagine any joined up thinking on regulation of something that is a global transformation. U.S. President Donald Trump making an extraordinary pitch at the Republicans first ever midterm convention in Dallas. Republicans are hoping the convention will energize voters ahead of November. With polls showing Democrats more motivated to vote, Republicans are banking on Trump to energize their base, despite voter anxiety about inflation and the Iran war. It has been really interesting speaking to folks here. A lot of people are concerned about, you know, high gas prices. They are concerned about the cost of living. But somehow they do not wish to tie that to President Trump when when they speak about their economic anxieties, they are not taking that back to the president. And they want the war to end. They they're bringing up Iran in conversations and how that has impacted the cost of goods and groceries and first, you know, energy prices. But somehow they they're not taking that back to to the president of the United States. So we'll see. You know, we're going to do more interviews and talk to people to see, you know, who is it really they think is responsible for for the war and for energy prices. But people here are really not tying a lot of what we're seeing in terms of economic concerns with to the president. Now, the president's journey to Dallas didn't go exactly to plan. An emergency slide on Air Force One accidentally deployed before he boarded, briefly delaying his departure. He flew on the Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar, telling reporters he was confident the plane was safe or he wouldn't have used it. He said, "I'm not going to go to Dallas. I'm going to go to the airport and I'm not going to go to the airport. In January, the FCC ruled that talk shows are no longer exempt from equal time rules for political candidates. That's a decades old standard that would require Kimmel to give airtime to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton as well. Now, the convention was definitely not the biggest event on primetime TV last night. That honor went to the NFL, where the Seahawks beat the New England Patriots in the season's first matchup, tough competition for the Republicans. But perhaps the busiest event of the day belonged to Apple, the iPhone maker revealing its latest phone and it folds. The duo, its first ever foldable phone, is a passport sized device that will sell for one thousand nine hundred and ninety nine dollars. The launch marks the biggest overhaul of the iPhone since 2007. And it's a big deal for new CEO John Tennis. Reporter Stephen Nellis was there and got to play around with it. This is going to take Apple to a brand new category. It's mostly been dominated by Android devices from Samsung, Huawei and others. It's going to cost two thousand dollars to start and will have the biggest screen and most advanced chip of any iPhone. So Apple's done a lot of work to try to fix some things that have bedeviled other folding phones in the past. Number one is this hinge. It has to feel smooth and secure hundreds of times a day sometimes and thousands, if not millions of times over the lifetime of the device. Number two is looking at the screen and seeing whether you can see any kind of a crease. Apple's deployed some amazing technology from the chip making industry to try to minimize what you see there in terms of a crease. Stephen says it's also a new showcase for Apple's artificial intelligence offerings. This thing is really optimized for the new Siri that Apple brought out in the summertime that is hoping users in the US will adopt. There's still some key question marks, though. The new Siri will not be available in the EU. And it's not going to be available in China, leaving a lot of people wondering how Apple is going to introduce the most important new features on its most important device in a timely way by the end of this year. The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked Missouri from using a Republican-drawn congressional map in November's midterm elections. The unsigned order offers no explanation and notes no dissents. It comes after a federal judge earlier this week ordered the opposite, that the state must use the new map. Missouri Republicans drew the boundaries last year at President Trump's urging, hoping to flip a Democratic seat and protect their narrow House majority. The new map will now go to Missouri voters as a referendum in November. The Trump administration is proposing changing the census to count only U.S. citizens and permanent residents. It's a move. The proposal would exclude not just immigrants in the U.S. illegally, but also those in the country legally on a temporary basis, and would eliminate some of the questions about race and ethnicity that have been part of the census since 1790. Civil rights advocates warn the changes could leave cities and states with large immigrant populations with insufficient federal aid and representation, calling the potential effects earth-shattering. History fans are flocking to London's British Museum today to catch a rare glimpse of 11th century life in the Bayeux Tapestry. That's a 70-meter-long embroidery depicting the Norman conquest of England. Producer Marie-Louise Gamoutian got a sneak peek at the 1,000-year-old artwork before the exhibit's opening. It is normally housed in a museum in France, but it arrived on loan in July in an air-conditioned anti-vibration crate escorted by French police until the Eurotunnel, and then handed over to the U.S. Department of State. And then handed over to British authorities once it arrived in Britain. Such is the excitement for this exhibition that tickets for a first phase sold out within hours.
