AFC East Preview: Buffalo’s New Defense vs. New England's Deep Ball

Felix, we had our first actual live football game that was played at the Hall of Fame game this past week against the Panthers in the Cardinals. I have to say this, if you didn't watch it, you missed arguably one of the better preseason games that I've seen in a long time. It had everything you wanted it. It had fumbles. It had the, you know, big plays. It had, it came down to the very last second. I thought the biggest takeaway was both of those teams were prepared to play. And if I'm a Cardinals fan and I looked out there and I was like, we actually looked like we were prepared to play, especially with some of our backups, especially with a rookie quarterback. I think if you're the Panthers, your takeaway is that, hey, we have some depth in certain areas. That makes me feel really good. Now, it was a higher scoring game, wasn't a lot, and typically these, these are higher scoring games. What you don't want is the game that ends in like 10-6, then you're walking away saying, are often, it's art terrible. You kind of want it to be almost a 33 to 30 game that comes down to the last second. I think that kind of for both teams, it gives you a little bit of a symbol of kind of what you have, but I thought it was really, really good for the kickoff of really the football season. Yeah, I am Carson Beck looked like a world-beater for at least a night. And I think that's what a preseason game is really good for, might make a career for the next five years off of it. So that's also really nice to see. But let's let's talk some real ball here. Let's talk about the AFC East. Let's talk about one of the more competitive divisions. I know that it's probably more well balanced just because the dolphins are at the bottom and where there's an X amount of smart people that are going to believe in the jets and they're trend up or whatever that may look like. But then you have two true contenders in the runner-ups of the entire league and then probably the runner-ups of the last era in the Buffalo Bills. Yeah, and you say competitive as in like the Bills Patriots, you could almost flip a coin for who's going to win this division. I think both of them arguably are probably going to make the playoffs. I think both of them are going to be really good this year. I like what the Bills have done just to kind of reset with under the McDermott system. They didn't really change anything other than defensively, right? They're going to keep, they're going to essentially keep the offensive coordinator now as they head coach. I think the players DJ Moore, they add him, they actually have a bona fide receiver that's not a gadget guy in like Shikir. Not that Shikir was a gadget guy, but he's a slot receiver. He needs to play in the slot. We know, because we've seen this time and time again, if you're tied in or your slot receiver is the engine of your offense, that's typically not going to spell positively for you. Now, I like James Cook at the running back spot. I think everything there, running out of more 12 personnel, but having a legitimate outside receiver threat so that you're not pushing the field with your tight ends, you actually have a guy that can push the field and DJ Moore. I like this move. To me, we're going to start off with the Bills. I think the Bills really kind of saw what happened in New England and was like, if we don't correct this now, we could be staring at another, you know, another Patriots, you know, dynasty for the next 10 years with Drake May. Yeah, and that's exactly what what what the problem could be. And so we're looking at a guy that they've hired as their defensive coordinator that you're very familiar with as a Bronco's guy, but also Jim Winter does that a long history, a long football life as it is. And he's still not 40 yet. And so like that's what's really interesting to see. And we've talked about like these recent players getting hired to become coaches. I think this I think Jim Winter is more than the the Michael Vareble type and like he played for a little bit and Vareble played for a long time. But it has some has some experience coaching and is now truly and maybe has this extra level that Vareble never had of like no, I'm a true defensive mind here. I won't call him a mastermind, but he can really start to work here. What do you see what do you see with Jim Winter's defensive program going from Denver taking it to Buffalo and how it matches up with their personnel? Well, I'll just say this. You can say mastermind. I mean, this was the arguably the best defensive coordinator at the college level when I think with Paul Chris was fired. It was constant. They did not give him the head coaching job, which I think was devastating to him. I mean, think about it. You are essentially a walk on all American. It was constant. You are an undrafted guy that ended up. I think he played near near a decade in the league. You are a legend as a as a was consonant. You go and then you turn in Wisconsin into a national powerhouse defensively kind of follow Miranda. You bring them back to national promise like prowess. Then you don't get that job. I think he's kind of not me. Me and R is probably not the term to use, but he's kind of moved around at the NFL level. Then he gets that job with the Broncos. The Broncos ran a very similar system to Illinois, which Illinois ran a lot of five men fronts in cover one. Well, you now inject a guy like Leonard who knows the Miranda kind of that creeper simulated pressure system, on front based zone system, but you inject it into kind of Vance Joseph who's already that five men front that they had in the Broncos. I thought was arguably the most disruptive last year. So you transition that now. You have a very passive defense. I mean, we've talked about this. I feel like ad nods to him about the bills under McDermott. It was basically built to beat the chiefs and the Bengals. Joe burrows always hurt. And then the chiefs, the kind of the meta flip, right? So it won then the chiefs and the Bengals came to them within their own division with with New England becoming who they who they've become within 12 months. Right. Exactly. And so not only that, but the ecosystem of the NFL and this just shows you how quickly the NFL changes. You're not defending kind of these spread offenses anymore. Right. This is now a 12 personnel. We're going to try and run the ball game controllers now deal. And they just didn't have the guys. I think the biggest thing and one of the biggest things that Leonard has talked about is getting Ed Oliver moving around, finding a way to get him in matchups that you know, he should be up there with like a Kobe Turner who I'm going to put it out there. I know we didn't talk about this when we did the FC West, but because Miles Garrett is there, look for Kobe Turner to have 10 sacks inside. I mean, that's Chris Jones' esk. I think Ed Oliver has the ability to have 10 sacks from the inside position. That's, do you do that? You're an all pro player. So I think like that, the front structure there with Bradley Chubb and Greg Russo who are going to be big dudes. These are guys that you're not going to want to drop into coverage a lot of times. It's going to be a lot of four and five man front set are going to control the top. I think the linebackers are probably going to be a little bit smaller, but I like Terrell Bernard. I think where the biggest transition is going to be is on the back end, where you're going from a very much of a passive zone to more of a man match setting under the line. Leonard wants to run very sticky coverage, which we solve with Broncos. That is really interesting. And I mean, when you have a guy like Josh Allen, that can level your team up and make the floor so much higher for you. And they've already had the, like you're talking about, they've had Ed Oliver on their team for a few years and they've had, they're bringing a lot of it back. And that includes what they're, what they're already some of the best in the league at, but going to the bottom of the division, going to probably the bottom of the NFL, which that's fine for a year or two, or maybe even three if you actually look like you have a foundation moving forward at that point. But the Miami Dolphins higher Jeff Hathley from the Green Bay Packers as from their defensive coordinator perch, but he brings them Bobby Slowick as well. And we've seen this contagion of the Shanahan McVey guys across the league. And this is even more so of it. But also it is on the defensive side of the wall. So is there a little bit of the flavor where it's going to be some of the the McDonald's solid type of deal here? Not sure yet. Probably going to take a year or two for them to get the type of players to just start showing any sort of promise moving forward. Yeah, this to me is kind of a gap year. Right. And I hate look in the NFL. You never want to be like, we're looking for next year. But we all know like the Cardinals we talked about this with the AFC West, they're not playing for 2026. I think at the NFL, it's a dangerous thing though to get into the whole, oh, we're just going to tank for a year. I think when you talk to coaches, you want a set of mentality of no, we're going to win games. So, okay, everybody has a slotted to win for. Let's try and win six, maybe try and win seven. Let's sneak up on some of these teams that maybe don't expect us to. to be competitive or overlooking us, or later in the year when teams come in banged up, maybe we can steal a win in the division against the bills or the patriots where they're trying to conserve energy and we're trying to kind of build something. I think that's really what you have to look at with the dolphins is-- - I even think in a season, like if you won a game, like if you split with the bills and the Patriots, but you're still like five and 12 or whatever that looks like, it's like, no, you won the games that you weren't supposed to, but you lost every game you weren't supposed to, but you got that means you got a better draft pick. - Well, and it means like, stay competitive at home. Win a couple of road games, try and steal one from the bills, try and steal one from the Patriots, whether it's at a way or at home, really do that. I think if you do that, that looks good. I think the transition here offensively is gonna be slow from McDaniel's. I think you're gonna see a more standard style of play. It's not gonna be crack tossed to the cows come home. They're gonna have a fullback that's not gonna be the typical fullback. He's a rookie under active free agent. They're only carrying one. I don't see them running a ton of 21 personnel. I see this being mostly tied in based. You go and you look at the receivers. That's Jalen Tolberg, Caleb Douglas, Mollie Gwashel team. - He's going to go on Miami. For a year, hopefully. And maybe he starts Manning. - Yeah, and I think I still think this team is gonna be okay on defense. And I think half of he's gonna stabilize on defense. I actually, I think that the receiving core, I'd say that I think the receiving core could be a little bit better, especially if I got like Chris Bell is kind of available. Maybe he kind of works through and it kind of shows up. Tutu Atwell, we've talked about it. Like he's a deep brick guy. So I do think like there are some names on here. They kind of, you can maybe get excited about. I mean, but let's be honest, man. Outside of Devon Hane, there's really not much going on. The quarterback situation too, Malik Willis is gonna be slated as a starter, but it would not surprise me if Quinn Uers ends the season. Going into it. So it depends on what that is. Defensively though, I think if you look at this, the transition is gonna be basically from a three, four base to a four, three base. They got rid of a couple of guys. I don't really see anything, the secondary was just not very good. And I don't think it got very much better over here. I mean, you're looking at a guy like Juju Brantz and a rookie first rounder and Chris Johnson. Okay, can Johnson be that boundary corner? Then you have Jason Marshall and Dante Traitor back there. None of those names, you're sitting there saying yes. - Lala, yeah. - Right, so I really think Settlen, it's gonna be a transition. I think Hathley is going to look at what Solo was able to do with the 49ers and be like, how can I pull some of that into this with a bunch of no name guys, a bunch of, really we don't have a lot of stellar play. How can we stabilize things with the front, maybe keep clean in the back end? I don't think you're gonna see a lot of cover one. Right, I think weaver was running just, he basically was spamming cover two just because he was trying to protect, protect his corners all the time. I could easily see that with Hathley. This is not a complicated defense. So this isn't like a fan geo coming in, which the dolphins live that. This isn't like a Mike McDonald or a Jesse Mint who are coming in. This isn't a Christian Parker with Dallas coming in with just a lot of different movie parts. Hathley runs the Solo system. It's gonna be very much basic. It's gonna be more technical based which when you don't have great players, you really need to have the technique fitting there. So yeah. It's gonna be a fight for the Jets for the basement, but I do think that there is a little bit of a higher floor with Miami. Right, I do like the sea saw that we have you on the program. It's like, all right, let's talk about the bills and don't. No, the hatreds and Jets. Then we just let them off softly. Well, I mean, if we started off with the Jets, everybody would have just logged off by now. No, we gotta get the New Yorkers in there. We gotta get 97 million of the New Yorkers out there. We're gonna hit them last so we can talk about everybody and keep y'all entertained. All right, let's talk Pat where they lose in the Super Bowl last year, but overall, a phenomenal year. That you couldn't have asked for that much more, especially out of Drake May. Also to runner up in the MVP. But seeing it is really interesting to see them basically run the same plays that they were running 15 years ago, just with a little bit different of a quarterback because he can actually run a little bit. And so, and he's basically, if you can develop him into the mental processor that Tom Brady was, then he might be the greatest quote. You're on that track. And we're only two years in and he has shown a lot of, a lot of capabilities to do a lot of interesting things and having a guy that like Josh McDaniel who's gonna probably be there for good amount of time. 'Cause he's probably not getting another crack out of head coaching yet. He's a lifer. He's a Patriot's lifer. And that's why it makes him spurn in the cult so weird. Like why does he come back? Why does he ever leave to begin with? That's me that's here and all that. But taking a look at what they're going to try and do defensively, I think what the, and then they're also getting AJ Brown from the Eagles. I think what's really gonna not tear this team down, but like what could really hurt this team and the only real issues I see moving forward are some of the off the field things, the fatigue, the injury, it's gonna be a lot of that. The other are out, I'll just elaborate things outside of football that you take a pen, that take a count into football. And so talking about what they're gonna do offensively and that extra step of development that Drake May is going to do because that's where it all begins and ends with if you're the Patriots. Well, I don't think a lot of people understand. Last year the Patriots did something that nobody else did in the NFL. The NFL meta right now is play action, throw to the intermediate. If we get a shot, it's more of an alert. We've kind of progressed, football goes to cycles. We've almost become all the way back to the West Coast offense stop. - Yeah, that's great. - Right, now the West Coast was all drop-back passing, but what we're doing is saying, okay, we're gonna play action and then really target the intermediate. The Patriots were like, we're not gonna play action and we're gonna throw the ball deep. And I think when you get a guy like AJ Brown, we watch the Eagles, we've talked about this. It looks like, I mean, they're basically just like spamming vertical routes with AJ Brown and slants, right? It's hitches, slants, fates. It looks like a high school offense. I mean, we've talked about that. So when you inject a guy like this into a quarterback and a system that is already trying to throw the ball down the field more than anybody else and was the most successful at doing it, it made a ton of sense to me. Now, I do think that they can expand their play action game, make the game easier for Drake May, but it's almost kind of like what Sean Peyton did with Bo Nix. It's like, no, we're gonna start on hard mode. And you're either gonna do it or you're not. And it's gonna, you're gonna struggle early. It's gonna look really bad at times. - Or we're gonna find out that they are continues to be the option then we'll move on as a franchise. - You are going to the Super Bowl. - Exactly. So it's, you know, and there is something to it. I know a lot of coaches, especially like lower level coaches, they roll their eyes at that, I know a lot of fans are just like, well, isn't there a better way of approach? But I do think that there's just sometimes, especially in a system like the Patriots, which is very, I mean, look, Tom Brady and Josh McDino built this system with Bill Bellicic. It's very much a thinking man's offense, right? And it's, you know, take what the defense is giving you. If the defense is giving you those isolated guys, let's take that. So I do think that with, that's a thing that focus on this year, especially with the fact that they added AJ Brown and Romeo Dobs. Guys, Romeo Dobs is part of the Packers. The Packers threw the ball down the field with Jordan Love. They're probably the only other team that threw the ball deep at the same rate that the Patriots did. They're sending you bat signals. They're telling you what's coming. They want to throw the ball. They're going to load you up in 12 and 13 personnel, run the ball. They're going to try and get you to creep down. And then they are going to throw bombs over your head with Dobs and AJ Brown. Well, and that's what's really interesting is that, like we talk about the Rams being pretty obvious with playing their hand and being like, all right, they're getting miles of air. They have Devon's A. Adams. They have an older quarterback. They're going for it. And I think just on the other side of the corn, when you have a young quarterback, and you clearly can go to the Super Bowl, that's the way the chiefs, and it's not dangling over my head, like it usually is. But that's why the chiefs were so successful, so quickly and so successively, because it was back to back. They won the Super Bowl. Or at least got to the ABC Championship Gaming Patrick. My home is his first year as a starter. The Patriots get to the Super Bowl and drink May second year overall. It's like, all right, we're off to the races. Now what else can we do to get it done right now? and then it helps we've been further eight, nine years down the road or whatever the case may look like. It gives our quarterback the confidence of playing big time football when it matters the most. Even when he may not have the horses like you did at one point or another when after we've paid him or whatever the case may look like. That's why this side is so important too. It's like, yeah, no, you have to go for it basically all the time. But to protect yourself for the later times when you're going for it, you have to go for it now because you give Drake May AJ Brown and the and Josh McDaniel's the ability to like, all right, let's throw the football down the field as much as we can. You're set up for a tremendous amount of success and we'll see if it continues this year. But like, let's look at their defense and seeing what Ravel and Cure are able to do with that with what they're able to do defensively with because they had really good moments and then we talked about it all summer long, stuck into the Super Bowl both them and the C-hawks. But at the same time, what are they going to do to level up because they've got film on you also the same thing that you could say about their offense? Well, I think you know, I did I did a hit with one of the Patriots guys earlier this offseason. I think earlier this summer and he was like, is there one player on the team that you really feel like you need to step up? And I was like, well, it's Carlton Davis. Like Carlton Davis, dude, you were signed to be the partner of Christian Gonzalez. I think everybody understands that. I thought, Gondzo really. I'm saying about them going for it too. They have Milton Williams Carlton. Yeah, I have even talked about it. Yeah, Christian bear more. They brought in Dremont Jones who's really a he's not he looks like he's a detackle, but he really plays edge to kind of hold up a little bit better on the outside of the run game. They've got solid guys inside, you know, they got Christian Ellis who I think is going to be that adjuster piece on that back end to get them into some five man front. They go out and get Kevin Byard, who is arguably the best post safety in the entire NFL. And then who do you pair him with? Man, we really like this kid Craig Woodson Woodson. He's about he's about 220 pounds. They loved him near the box. I think you can see what they're trying to evolve to. It was interesting because when I did that Patriots hit piece, nobody can really tell you what the Brables defense is. And I had somebody comment on their so the best explanation. So I'm going to use the same explanation that I that I used in that is that essentially it him and Salah got to the same spot, but from different viewpoints, he basically took the Bill Bella check system and got to the point where we need to go weak rotation cover three and we need to run quarters. We want to run a four four down base. We're going to have to play nickel. Now the biggest difference I think between them is just kind of the structure in which they they're kind of they want to be hybrid last year. I don't think they'll be as hybrid with safeties last year. I think if this is a nickel based defense, they're going to lean into and stunt the front heavily. They're not going to blitz a lot. They're going to play man coverage on the outside with their corners. They're going to use buyered in the post and they're going to drop Craig Woodson inside and then they're going to use a guy like a Christian Ellis when they do need to go into base as kind of that adjuster piece on the edge and then bring it into the lemma because the one thing market Jones is not a very big dude. He can play man coverage in slot but he is not a very big dude. So what when you do 12 personnel or you see some of these 13 personnel or 21 personnel, that will be the question mark for them is how well can they hand up and then what is the next evolution within the system now that you have to save these in primary post and down safety roles. Yeah that that is what's kind of I mean we talk about who's the most successful of the Belichick tree. It's Mike Raybole even though he never coached for him the only play for him but it is kind of like do your job. I'll kind of figure out the personnel and the system and the coverage that works the best but overall just if we do the right thing we'll all be in the right spot but also they have all of these signings that we've talked about. Let's talk about the New York Jets and what they brought in because they fired their off as a coordinator late and I want to ask this in the most respectful way possible over under seven and a half weeks for Aaron Glend to be the head coach in the New York Jets because I feel like they've brought in the perfect interim head coach in Frank Reich and then you'll figure everything else after after that. It just feels too like that. I feel disrespectful saying that but it just yeah. You did it you know Gino Smith is a is a bridge quarterback and you brought them back like you brought back the good version of Gino Smith which wasn't that much better than the bad Gino bad version of Gino Smith that you got rid of a decade ago. Yeah and I you know you look you really look at this you get Omar Cooper in the first round you added Adon Mitchell which he's a deep threat that can't track the ball that's never a really good thing to have as a receiver when you were a deep threat but then you can't track the ball. I think they have a decent offensive line. I think they feel really good about their tight end room but look you're floor offensively and you're sealing are pretty much the same thing with Gino Smith. Like at this point he's what 14 years into the league. He is what he is. You're not going to start a club nick right like that's just not going to happen. Breeze Hall is going to be really good Braille and Allen like so you have some things. I think Frank writes going to do the dolphins too. They are. They have good tight ends. We have good pieces on deep. It's our running back to the best player on our team. Yeah they look and they do offensively they almost like person that was like a mirror with with Miami and I think like if you if you really look at it it's you mentioned it with the NFC East like we go and look at the commanders. You fired both of your offensive coordinator and deep as a coordinator. You didn't really do anything to change and so you know I think at least you got to give Glenn like he's like okay we're going to go in a little bit of a different role so we're going to bring in right you know Frank right I think your spot on though to ask that why did you bring in Frank right like Frank right to me like you said like why him it doesn't matter that you brought in a new offensive coordinator and older guy whatever you also bring him Bill Musgrave as the quarterbacks coach perfect elevations and interim offensive coordinator because he's a veteran or better out of the league. It just feels so perfect to be like all right scoot out Aaron Glenn and we'll find whomever else is next because and like I think that's because it's after year one it's like here we go again with the jets and that's it's it sucks but it's always the jets and they all it's it's the same thing because they always have good drafts they always have the three first round picks we always feel good about here we go with the jets but I feel like people are starting to catch on like no no guys guys stop. Well and I think what was the most egregious thing about last year was the fact that was the fact that the defense played his bad as they did and they almost like didn't even change like they just refused to be to be any different like he never evolved it I mean now you're looking at a situation where you're starting like right now if we start today we're probably starting three rookies David Bailey being your first round draft pick DeAngelo Ponds who we don't know you second rounder but you know I think he'll be he'll be good at the nickel you went and go get Neshawn Wright who we've seen this play out corner has a really good corner has a really good year his team moves on from him because they know who he is he gets up to you and Cowboys are dumb enough to resign Trevon digs. Exactly high high variance player a high variance player at a high variance position you're gonna have Brandon Stevens so you're what you're gonna play a ton of man coverage I've been hearing about Ezra Atomas and Quantez stickers for the last couple years yet neither one of them has been able to develop into a big time player neither one of them gets more than about 25% of the snaps then you you have Andres Cisco and you add Mink of Fitzpatrick which in year nine Mink of Fitzpatrick hasn't been good like all pro pro proble good like we think Mink of Fitzpatrick in a couple of years so what are what kind are we getting you signed to Mario Davis to come in you know who's in year 15 you have Will Mcdonalds who's in year four and is on a prove you know basically has to prove it now so I don't know I mean look they brought in a younger guy to be kind of the defensive coordinator I still think Aaron Glenn how much of this is going to transition to kind of a raveness because that's that's where the the system is kind of you know coming to coming in so it's like you know do you know I just don't know how this is going to work out with the jets I think that like we mentioned it with Miami at least Miami is going to have an identity under halfly I don't know if Aaron Glenn necessarily has that identity now he's that he's been part of something like this before though we've seen this with Detroit but Detroit had golf you have you now have a quarterback in in you know Smith that I just I don't know so I do agree with you like in terms of like with Miami and we do know we do know with geno Smith geno Smith you're going to get 30 touchdowns you're gonna get 30 you're gonna get 30 intersections you're gonna 30 turn over somehow some way and he's gonna you know, what does that look like later in the year if they're losing? Is he disinterested or is he glad to be back in New York? I mean, that's really what the thing is. And I do think that you're good for asking, okay, do we see even eight games from Aaron? I think if they start out, oh, and four, oh, and five, and it's just not, it's not looking very, very good. Like they are, like you said, they already have the guy in play. I think, look, let's go through there. Let's go through their early schedule because this is not going to be fun. Week one, they're at Tennessee. You could argue, okay, maybe, maybe that's a toss. I'm giving him word with your two that, that, I'm giving him a, with a, with a, with a, with an established head coach. Mm-hmm. Right. You think I have. You think I have coached two? Yeah. And they're going to play better defense. I think you're going to have, I agree with you. So like, okay, that's a loss. You're going to play Green Bay. That's probably a loss. Then you have consecutive games at Detroit, at Chicago. You're probably owing. You let them back on the plane after the short game. Do you, like, even let them make the 45 minute from Detroit to Chicago? Do you make them, do you let them on the plane for the long? I think, I think, look, because you have Cleveland and week five. So if you can win that, and it's like, okay, we want a game at home against a team that we should probably win. You're going to go and play against New England in week six. What do we look like in our division on our wagon? If they get absolutely smoked, I think he's gone by week six. If it's competitive, I think they wait and say, can we win a game at home against Miami? If they lose that game and they start on seven, he's gone before they ever get, before they ever get to Las Vegas. Because here's the deal. You're at Kansas City Buffalo chargers and then you have your at Miami and then you have a buy. I don't think he lasts until week 12 if they go, if they go over. That's the guy. He doesn't, he there's no way he lasts to the buy. No, that's, that's tough. And what I hate to see again is that this team was never set up to be successful. Aaron Glenn was never going to have success here. And it's just another, just another situation that never gets worse. And it's like, I don't know if the jets are going to be patient enough to just say no, we signed you for three years. I hope so. But I also understand where, where at the ownership's looking at it like, well, okay, we started 0 and 7 last year we started 0 and 7. That's two years in a row where we've been 0 and 7 to start. Do you say, oh, well, it's really year three where we think we're going to get it. And I've always said this and you know, I've always said this is you cannot sit here at the NFL and be like, well, we'll just draft that guy in the first round. Remember, we talked about last off season at this time about, oh, all these first round draft pick quarterbacks. And what do we get? We don't get all those first round draft pick quarterbacks. Exactly. So I think even again, I mean, think about it, you know, even like a kid like Quinn, yours was projected first round draft pick by the end of the year. He made it out of the draft. They might have to play them twice here for the next two years. Exactly. I mean, I think that I think if there's if we just go back and kind of rehash it, I think the bills, the bills got better. I think DJ Moore is going to really help out. I think the defense, it's more or less like addition by subtraction, by getting rid of McDermott and kind of flipping what you're doing defensively to more aggressive style. It fits what they have in the secondary people forget. I think Maxwell, Harrison and Kristen Benford are going to be one of the better corner duo in the league. And the and the Patriots will be interesting too, just because it's like what's that next step of development? What that? What are they about to do next? Because it's the story of Drake may kind of parachute it out to their whole team. What is in you added the deep threats and dobs and AJ Brown. So like I think like, okay, well, those two teams have elevated themselves. One is coming back. Look, if there's ever a Super Bowl hangover team, it's typically the one that like loses at the Super Bowl. But I think if you look at this, what the Patriots are doing defensively and then what they did, what they did offensively, I think they very much were like, no, no, no, we're not going to have that. We're really going to press the bills and I think that that's what they do. And then you look at the bottom feeders in Miami. I think that's in the dolphins. But I think the dolphins are more stable. I think they know where they are and the jets are just like they keep falling back to where they are. They're climbing up the ladder and falling back down just because I don't know, it's slippery. But the dolphins, like you're saying, they do feel a little bit more stable because they're like, okay, no, Malik Willis, here we go. We're going to think I don't know. I don't know what it is because like they they're they're roster is not great. But I think you just get the sense in the feeling of like, happily will be able to elevate and stabilize. Right. And then you look at the jets and it's just like, well, you fired both of your coordinators in year two. You're looking like staring down the barrel of going one in seven again for the second year. I just don't know if any, even if it's the Cardinals, I don't think if we look next year and Mike LaFlor is staring down one in seven, I think he gets fired in the second year. So I just don't see it. It sucks to be a jets fan. It really does. But you either signed, look, your two biggest free agent pickups was a 15 and a 14 year player to be the quarterback. So your defense and offense, I just don't know what that elevates. You got to really hope, you got to really hope that you hit in the draft on these guys on defense that you can see that and then just stabilize the defense so that you can at least be above average so that maybe you pull the offense and maybe you can win. But man, you look at that start of that schedule. That's not fun. Not at all. Not at all. Hopefully we will have a more positive AFC north next week.
