I'm steering with my head and actually I'm steering with my head and actually I'm steering with my head and actually on your face much happier than you were in your man your chair I'm just sensing But Levi isn't just happy he's relaxed much more relaxed than when he tried using a power chair without the AI device as Levi's dad tells me Levi was typically doing very big moves like this over stretching both in his back as in his arms creating sometimes a problem with how his muscles and his back bone is actually being formed and we see now that that complete tension is out of his body and he's a very flexible young guy with good muscles and good tenures So But it's not just out and about the new system gives Levi more freedom The same system can be connected with devices around the home He's already controlling TV, which is sometimes a problem, but he controls fully the Apple TV systems, he controls the sound, he controls his air conditioning on his own room, he can open doors and close doors, but the biggest channel is on the TV, I can tell you that with his sisters who takes control, but the fact that he can take an independent approach and switch to channels, YouTube channels, watch his own thing, gives him a real sense of independence and it's what he likes to do in. So we are just about to set Levy up on an Xbox, we're going to play some computer games. Apparently his sister close into the console, so let's see who wins, the Brits, all the Belgians. We're playing a popular football game. We can't control the game completely, another person acts as co-pilot moving the players around while Levy uses his head and foot pads to do a series of dazzling tricks and flicks, and the occasional dirty foul. But it doesn't take long before the Belgian Red Devils absolutely destroy England's three lines. I know I know I know I know it's right. What did you think of my footballing skills? It was too short to tell. Very diplomatic, fair enough. Meeting, visiting reporters at Video Games is fun, but the real benefit of Chrome Move its device for Levy is the freedom it's given him to get out and about. If I go somewhere, I just go. I put my music on and I go. Yeah. Ben, I don't think we'll be sending you to represent England in any more video games. No, I don't think it's a good idea. What I do want to know is what the experience was like, seeing Levy move independently. Oh, it's amazing. I absolutely loved it. Levy's move really changed when I saw him first in the manual chair and then I saw him in the electric chair. He was so much happier, he was smiling, he was giggling. Just to be clear here Ben, this is a device that's fitted onto a wheelchair. It's not an actual wheelchair, but can it work on any wheelchair? Yeah, so the device itself, you're working on the back, you're plugging a few things and it fits into about 90% of powered wheelchairs. Now costs start roughly $10,000 and they've sold about 100 so far, but they're hoping to conquer the world with this device and expand much further. Right, and are they the only ones doing this? So there are other head control systems out there, but they're almost pre-set in terms of the software as to what it thinks an unintentional movement is. It cancels those out, but what makes this system so unique is that it's constantly learning, it's constantly adapting. It sort of takes away the stress of having to adapt yourself to the chair, the chair adapts to you, which is fantastic, I love it. It sounds fantastic. [Music] Now, innovation can come in all shapes and sizes, and we've just heard about an AI device on wheelchairs, but now we're going to find out about a different innovation that's much, much simpler, but one that's having a huge impact. To understand more, I've got William Kramer here. William, what's all this about? Yes, so as you said, Maira, this is a very simple idea, a very simple innovation, but it is having a big impact. And it's something that's helping autistic people, in particular. Could you tell us more about autism? Yes, so autism is a lifelong developmental disability, which affects how people interact with the world. Now, it varies enormously how it impacts people, and some autistic people, I think, wouldn't regard themselves as disabled, other people would. But one thing that a lot of autistic people have in common is that they struggle with communication in particular. Some don't talk at all, right? Yes, that's right, but one thing that's, I think, less well known is that there are autistic people who can speak most of the time, but go through periods where they just can't. And that is something that has happened many, many times to May, who is now 22. At school, especially when I was in school, and I didn't know I was autistic at the time, which made it even more confusing. But if I ever had to do, like, a presentation, or I was picked to talk in front of the class, or, like, answer a question, I just wouldn't be able to open my mouth. I just know sounds would come out whatsoever. And that's very distressing when you don't know your autistic or why it's happening. And also not having any tools to be able to manage that. May uses the words "they" and "them" to describe themselves. And as you heard, they really struggled at school. And at 16, they were forced to stop going to college because of mental health issues. It was after that that they started their own business called "Inside My Head". Then a couple of years ago, May hit on the idea of what they're calling "communication clothing". So, Mayra, here is one of May's sweaters. Okay. Oh, look at that. So, it's a black hoodie or sweater, right? And it has these are bats. These are baby bats. Five different bats with different facial expressions. What's going on here? So, yeah, on the front of the sweater, there's five super cute pictures of bats doing different things. So, the one on the left is sort of f**king its wings in a sort of excited way, sort of a bit buzzy. Then the next one, I think, is maybe looking a bit sad. And then the next one is just happy. The next one's kind of got its wings over its face. And like covering its ears or its face. Exactly. So, I think that one is overwhelmed, maybe. And then the last one, I think, is sleepy. So, I'm guessing this is what you mean by "communication clothing". Yeah, so the idea is that if somebody's wearing that jumper and they find that they can't talk, they can point at one of these pictures. And the person they're with will understand how they're feeling. There's also, if you look on the sleeves, it says yes on one sleeve. And no, on the other. So, they can answer questions by pointing at these words on their sleeves. Right. May explain to me that when they get really overwhelmed, without a way to communicate, things can actually spiral out of control. For them, the more stressed you get about not being able to talk, it's either you get even more dysregulated, which makes it even harder to talk. And that often causes, I used to get a lot of panic attacks or causes full meltdowns or something like that. So, it's like a negative cycle of non-communication and stress. And I'm at a young boy who lives near London, who just like May, is really affected by this. Hi, I'm Estin. I'm 10 and I like playing video games. I also like animals. Estin has long hair at a round smiley face. He is autistic and has also been diagnosed with ADHD. Now, like a lot of autistic people, Estin suffers from anxiety. And sometimes, when he gets anxious or excited, he says he loses his words. So, when I'm seeing, when I'm meeting new people, when I'm going places that I haven't gone before, sometimes I can lose my words. And when you're tired as well. Yeah, when I'm tired, at least my words. Now, in that clip, you can also hear Estin's grandmar, Gloria. Now, recently for Estin's birthday, she gave him a communication jumper to help him when he loses his words. Now, Estin's jumper wasn't designed by May, but by Kean Lawn, who started a company recently called My Best Interest, which also does communication clothing. Myra, I've got one just like Estin's here. Take a look. Okay, so it's another hidden jumper. per but I'm noticing this one has little animals on the sleeves we have an overwhelmed owl with ear defenders we also have a hungry fox and a very sick hedgehog and also on the other sleeve we have let's see this is a bird that wants to fly home a happy frog and a sad badger and you also have yes and new on the sleeves I like this one too it's it's different from the other but it's very clear what the hoodie is communicating exactly yeah this one has little words underneath the pictures now when Astin's grandma gave him this jumper it was love at first sight my gosh he was so excited it had to be put on straight away we were gonna go out for an evening meal so I'm wearing this I'm not changing mummy leap bring me a posher I'm wearing this and in actual fact it came a very handy walking to the pub didn't it because he suddenly got very quiet and he looked at me and he tapped my arm and I went are you all right darling and he went overwhelmed just to be clear Astin wasn't saying the word overwhelmed but he was pointing at the picture of the overwhelmed owl on his new jumper so we had a little chat and I said well it's been a long day it should be your birthday you don't usually get the evening to eat so you're probably also where's the hungry one hungry you're also probably hungry yes I am I am I am very hungry you know what I really like about this William is as much as Astin can communicate with his grandmother his grandmother is also able to communicate with him using the jumper yeah and I find it really interesting in that clip that we just heard where Astin's grandma kind of worked with him using the jumper to sort of work out what his emotion was and figure out that he was hungry and and actually with this clothing although it was designed really for autistic people a lot of professionals have been buying them so for example special needs teachers at school have been buying them and using them in the class to help them communicate with their children so how popular has this become how many people are buying these things so in the two months since Keane launched his company my best interest he has sold more than 150 jumpers and his TikTok videos have had almost 400,000 views and May who we heard from earlier has sold 10,000 sweaters with their company inside my head and they ship them all around the world now May says that this has completely transformed their own life it's given them a sense of purpose knowing that they can apply their own experience to help other people growing up I had very very very low self-esteem so like when I think about like my 15-year-old self who just believed the world was better off without them and I think about my 21-year-old self who helps 10,000 people that's like such a big like full circle moment that I think about all the time I'm like I'm so happy that I stayed and did this and tried and now I actually help myself and so many other people which is just wonderful you know the thing I really like here William is that these solutions have come from within the community it's it's really a good feeling yeah yeah no it's it's great to see people helping themselves and helping other people too and I remind her that anyone can be part of the solution thank you so much for what you've heard today William you're welcome my.
