I can't believe you say that Morty Seinfeld was Mr. Serenity now. It was Frank Kastanza, George's dad, I feel shame and I atone for my error. Serenity now, Serenity now! Welcome to 32 Thoughts the Podcast and a happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian listeners on this Thanksgiving Monday and anybody else who wishes to celebrate all I have to be thankful for is right here. Between you, Elliot and you, dog. Don't eat anything else. Everything else is just gravy. It is a lie, but we appreciate you attempting to convince people that is the truth. What can you say? It was a great weekend to be with the family, to have some good meals, and a pretty good entertaining weekend of hockey as well. Saturday felt like a good night. It was a busy one for sure. I was in Denver for Leafs Avalanche, that was a compelling game. How did it feel in studio? It was a fun night. There were lots of good games. I have to say that there was a lot of talk about in the first week or so of the season. The NHLPA started its fall tour where they go meet with all the teams and they ask them, "Okay, are there any concerns, any questions?" One of the things I was starting to talk about with some people, even teams was, "Are the players going to raise?" I don't think anybody is going to care that we're down to just four exhibition games. But I think one thing they are curious about is do the players say they need more time in training camp? Not so much the games, but just the practices, the structure, because the games have been really sloppy. I don't know if you felt this way, Kyle. I don't know if the audience felt this way, everyone out there. But I really felt that this weekend it kind of turned the corner for the better. I thought Saturday was a much better day of hockey, and I just feel generally that teams are starting to pick it up. You had a game there. There were times there I have no idea how Toronto won that game. I think McKenna, we may look back as that Saturday night in Denver being Gavin McKenna's true introduction to the NHL, because you saw the confidence arrive, and particularly with the stick check he made right before the Austin Matthews goal, but the way McKenna was just repeatedly, he was like prime berry Sanders. He got the ball, he started going downhill, and nobody could stop him. I honestly am shocked for a while that Toronto won that game. Before the game, I talked to Troy Stetcher for a couple of minutes, and I just asked so Colorado's a team that loves to play with pace, that does a lot of their damage off the rush. How do you go about defending it, and he's explaining to me well, you've got to identify where the speed is, and as a defenseman, you need to recognize, okay, is this something I'm going to have to try to defend by myself? I've got forward coming back to apply back pressure, and I can maybe close quicker a bit that way, right, so it was just, it was really good inside baseball stuff. And like his first shift to the game, McKenna comes at him down his side of the ice, and Craig Simpson actually gave him credit, like he made the decision early. It was the best play you could make against the Senate. Yeah, the best play you could make. He started skating the other way, and took what could have been him all alone to at least it was a contested shot, and that's all from Barbrowski's perspective. He could really have asked for anyway. So the game ends, I'm standing on the hallway there doing post-game interviews, and Stetra comes out of the room, and he goes, "Ah, look what I told you. Say we've got to identify speed, and first shift to the game, I get walked." I'm like, "Hey," I said, "Give yourself some slack." I'm all the things you could have done there. I think that was maybe the best he could handle it, and he just kind of laughed. I thought McKinnon looked like he was going to have six goals the way he was going in that first period. It was so impressive, and I love doing games there, and I just, for the last eight, nine years, you just watch who they got at their disposal. I just think, "What a gift for these avalanche fans." So they get to come, what was, you know, 41 nights a year now, 42, and watch that talent on display each and every night. It really is special. I don't know how they got only four shots in the second, and scored three times, and that was the period that changed the game for Toronto. And I know Bednar and the Postgames say, "I can't fault Blackwood for any of them, but we need to have at least one of those," and that shift to the game. That was a really interesting quote from Bednar, because he was trying to make a point without embarrassing his goalie. I've seen coaches like that. Those were all great goals. God, I wish he could have stopped one. Right. That's walking the line. He's walking the line there. Yeah, and I've always felt like Bednar, he can go hard when he feels necessary after the group. Publicly, I never see him go hard at an individual per se through the media. He does protect his guys more that way. But it was an impressive one for Toronto, especially when you're considering they lose Kristannev in the first period. Now we see he's gone on IR here now, so they'll be without him for at least a week. And Blankenberg first game with a leaf scores his first shift. It was one where Babrovsky did his job in allowing them to get their feet from under him, and then the top guys turned over. I thought it was really the one thing to get McKennan opportunity on that power play. It makes a great pass to Neelander, but also some shifts with Neelander and Matthews as the night wore on. Rolls that were earned in the eyes of Jim Hiller. Just think about what the noise was around him this time last week, Elliot. And it's all changed. A few things here to unpack. First of all, Blankenberg's going to play more because Tana's on IR now, which means he has to miss at least seven days. And they've got Utah this week. They've got Buffalo this week and they've got the Islanders this week. So that, you know, Tana is, I think we'd all agree if there's one area about the Maple Leafs, you kind of look at and say, I don't know, it's the blue line. Tana is probably the most indispensable player, although you know that he's going to miss time here and there. It's just the way it is. I don't think they know how long this is going to be. It's unfortunately, it's always a question mark with him, but they're going to really be tested now without him. That's for sure. I also want to say Troy Stetcher, Vikings fan, the five and O Minnesota Vikings. She has some offensive touchdowns on Sunday for a change. Yes. But thanks to the, thanks to the Washington commanders, they did not run the worst play of the week on Sunday. The command, I have no idea what the commanders were doing, but the Vikings ran a play up seven. That is maybe the worst play I've seen in the NFL in 25 years, and they are lucky. It did not end in total disaster for them. You know, the, the other thing though, two calls, there was, there was a play in the first period where McKenna was kind of bullied off the puck and Kevin and Cole be both sought instinctively. And they were like, okay, like that's, and they actually said, boy, he's really talented, but that's where he's going to have to learn. And then instead of going into a shell, I mean, he was fantastic. I know the avalanche fans in the building felt there should have been a penalty on the stick check. No chance, zero chance. That was a great play. And you can see his confidence growing offensively. You know, the thing about, the thing about this now is that, you know, training for Marchenko, the growth of Cowan, putting Nielander a bit with Matthews and now McKenna getting more confident. The one thing I'm seeing it, a thing from Toronto and a couple other teams that have been scouting them and have played against them are saying the same thing too. The Maple Leafs are trying to do whatever they can to make Matthews carry the puck less. They are trying to, it's very obvious they feel that the loss of Marner last year and everything he brought and all the skill he brought carrying the puck had a huge effect on their team, which it did. And they think that training for Marchenko and all the, and Cowan's improvement, McKenna skill, Nielander doing what Nielander does, although they don't always play together, they really want Matthews to worry about being a shooter. A puck hunter, which he's very good at, he's very responsible defensively. They, they think that if the Maple Leafs are going to be successful this year, he's going to carry the puck less. And all this talk about Matthews carrying the puck more, they may say it, but it's not what they really want. they want other people doing that.
heavy lifting. And we're starting to see that a bit, Kyle. No question. Healer has not been and he's kind of had that reputation but has not been shy any game they played in terms of mixing and matching lines in game and trying to find ways to unlock whether it's things offensively for his top guys or just to find better balance and was forced into that situation again on Saturday with only 11 forwards dressed and then losing Cristana. Also wanted to mention Elliott, it is great to see Lauren Gardner working avalanche breakfast again. She wanted to say what's up to you from her. I'm a big Lauren Gardner fan. I think she's fantastic at her job and she's a perfect addition to one of the funniest and most laid back broadcast teams that exist in the entire NHL. So I had a question for you. Some friends of mine asked me to ask you a question. Okay. And they said, what's Pobrowski like? How would I describe him? And I've only really dealt with them in those type of scenarios of post game interviews or the odd interaction in the dressing room. He's an interest like I remember in Florida doing some interviews with him post game after winning a playoff game during their runs and they would say he'll do the interview because we'd want to get it as soon as possible before we went off the air. So he'd do the interview. He just has to be sitting, can't do it standing in the hallway. So we would come out to the bench and he would sit on the bench and we do the interview like that. So like he's an interesting character obviously for a whole host of reasons. But when I see him in those situations, he's pretty relaxed for a guy that's just gone to battle as a gold tender. He never seems too wound up even after a big win or a big emotional night. He's always come across as just a very flat line heart rate. So one of the things I learned about him too is that when he goes into the room and he sits down after a game or a practice, he's got a routine for taking off the equipment and setting it up. And there was one time I wanted to ask him something and they said you can do it but he won't acknowledge you until he's finished doing his entire thing. And he could tell I was waiting for him and he didn't acknowledge me until it was done. I was like, that's no problem. I get it. I completely, I respect routines. I understand that some people have routines. So I've always been interested in that. He's like, he's has his routine for taking stuff off, putting it places and then okay, you want to say hi, you want to ask a question? Now you can do it. I love by the way you sent us a when you were driving, well not while you were driving, but while you were pulled over, you sent us a picture of the grand junction highway sign. Thank you for doing that. Yes. Spratback good memories. They said all roads lead home. Anyway, where do you want to go from that tremendously entertaining hockey game? Where do you want to go? Okay. Well, I wanted to mention the fact that you got sensed online. Did I ever? The game was the most exciting, entertaining finish, of course, without what scoring lates and then a couple of dandy moves in the shootout from Stutzlow for sure. Shane Pinto also, but yes, they were ready for you after you acknowledged how long they had gone, that Nashville had done a good job of keeping them without a shot on goal. So I do that from time to time. If you go back through my history, if somebody really has a long shift or a team goes a long time without a shot, I will mention that. No, there was no bigger whiner on the weekend than Colby, because in the early game, there's three of us on the desk besides the host run. So everybody gets a game and Kevin got your game and I got Montreal Detroit and Colby got Ottawa Nashville. And, you know, like the said, that game for Ottawa got kind of boring at one particular point. And Colby was like, what do you stick the new guy with the worst game? And oh my God, was he whining. He would not stop complaining. There weren't enough energy drinks in the last week. He was like, I'm so excited to be here, guys. Now you give me this track. Mr. Mr. Energy drink. There weren't enough of them on the planet for him to be energized to sit through that one. So then, then they mentioned it was 22, 22 other shots. So I tweeted that out and literally a minute later, they scored to tie the game, the one that hit Batherson and went in. And yes, the Ottawa Sands admin was all over me. When it went in, they wrote as a reply to that tweet, probably should have tried to hold us for longer with a shrug emoji. And then when they scored in the shootout to win it, Pinto, and then what happened with the shack eyebrow raising emoji. So they were waiting for me and, hey, I tip my cap. They got me good. I opened myself up. They took advantage of the opportunity, like a running back going through a big hole in the offensive line. I got no problem with that. All credit to the Sanders social media team for frying me like they did on that one. Ottawa's had a couple of really gritty wins back to back, Stutzler, who by the way, mentioned that he went on a golf trip with most cider to St Andrews. Or we went around to a new podcast in Scotland. Yes. In Scotland. And he said he shot an 82 at St Andrews. I'll tell you something else that Stutzler said that Kyle has really come through in the earlier part of the season. Is that, you know, there's a couple of things he wanted to work on. And Travis Green had kind of hinted that he challenged Stutzler. And Stutzler said that's true. And he said, you know, first of all, there's a lot of my game that could be better. There's a lot of details in my game that could be better. But the thing that he said that was really interesting was that one of the things that he's really challenged himself been is not getting as frustrated at himself when he has a bad shift or a bad play. I guess it's something he felt had really affected his game in years past. And he said, that's not going to be happening anymore. And he said that the team had a really hard camp, not surprising for green. And that the leadership group got together and they said the message that it's going to be for the group is we are going to bail each other out. And we are going to grind out victories this year with a smile. He said, that is the identity we've got to have. And without Brady Kachuk there, their identity had to change. He was one of their most forceful players. He was one of their most forceful personalities and they knew they had to find an identity. And there at Danny's going to be we're going to bail each other out and we're going to grind out wins together with a smile. And that national was a perfect, perfect example of that with an assist from their social media team. Yes. Fives are high in auto on the early going. They're off to a four on one start. Okay. So I wanted to get to the game that you were really keyed in in the early window on Saturday night, the Montreal Detroit game and the embrace the roll out the welcome mat from the Canadians faithful for Dylan Larkin. The we want Larkin chance. Gosh. Wouldn't it be amazing, Dylan? If you came and played here and think about how beloved you would be. Now Larkin did when he was asked to go to the post game, said he called it the best atmosphere in hockey, which I mean, he's not going out on a limb calling. I think we're on Saturday night. You take every building in this league at their best and that's number one. For sure. I guess what I'm getting at is do you see any chance that maybe Larkin expands his list to include Montreal because as far as we know, it isn't right now. So you're saying there's a chance. Very good. Lloyd Christmas. I always say never say never, never say never until it's done. I still think it's unlikely. You know, I think that you know, talking about this is like stepping onto a grenade, but you know, there there still is a feeling that some of those players felt they weren't treated very well post Olympics in Canada. And even though it's different in Montreal now and players like Caulfield and Hudson absolutely have extended their and emotions are running positively there. I think players always wonder what happens if it changes. I do think Larkin is at least I don't want to dwell on this too much because sometimes I think we just talk about it too much. I think he's at least considered it, but I don't know that it's likely
I just feel until it's an absolute no, I would never say never like you heard what I said on the pod on Friday. I I really believe it. I just Thursday. It's right. It's a look. Look what's happening. I haven't changed yet, but I don't know that I would consider it likely. All right. Yeah, Todd McClellan certainly voiced his feelings. I don't blame him for that. No, not a at all. He said he's done talking about it, not talking about it anymore. And to your point, why risk throwing any more gas on the fire? Yeah, he's got to win games. He's got to worry about winning games. You know what I liked about I watched the clip again on Sunday. You know what I liked about it? At the end of it, he said, I'm sorry. Like he was almost saying, look, I understand you guys have a job to do, but I'm not talking about it. Like I'm a big believer in polite but firm. Okay. You you you you try to be polite, but you stand your ground. And that's what I thought McClellan did there. I really, you know, I really thought that that was the right way to answer the question. It's like, you know, I'll tell you like somebody asked me, you know, about the Darnell Nurse Mark Spector thing on the weekend, where nurse took a bit of a shot at Spector and they said, you know, what would what would you do if if that happened to you? And one of the biggest lessons of my dad always taught me as a kid was, if you dish it out, you got to take it. And if Darnell Nurse wants to say that, then you have to take it. And that's what spec did. Like that's that's the way it goes. Like sometimes the people we cover are not going to be happy with us. And if they want to take a shot at us in the public sphere, that's just the way it is. Just the way it is. And I don't even think what McClellan was doing was a shot. It's just saying no more. And I thought he handled it perfectly fine. Agreed. Also, so I heard you guys talking about it in the moment. Of course, I couldn't see it. I was shown it Sunday morning. But how about the red light therapy that Sean Mackenzie was getting during his pregame hit for that and did not skip a beat. Yes. So there was there was a red light. I assume it was one on the banner that goes or that circles the building. Like there's like between and that arena. There's like little light banks kind of at the top of every volume walking into the 100 level. Oh, the bomb. Okay. And that's right above where that position is for that standup location. So that's what it was right in his face. It looked like basically his face went from being normal to looking like he'd fallen asleep in the sun for about 16 hours. And we couldn't stop laughing. And he nailed it. It was sure. It didn't. It almost set the tone for a night that there was there was no red lights. They're no red lights. They kept getting taken away. Like he stole them all. Fowler. What a story. They give him the start. This Canadian's goal-tending thing as good as Dolby's isn't as crazy played. It's a little bit open. There's room there for Fowler for anyone to grab that job. Yes. And we all said Montego is going to be out for a little bit here now. So it's the two of them for the time being in Montreal. I was another important win for the Canadians on Saturday night. So I'm looking at Elliott through almost two weeks of the regular season at the bottom of the standings. Before we get to that, we just talk about Strubel for a quick second. Sure. So Eric Engels had a note about Strubel after he got dealt to Nashville. And he'll play there. Someone sent me a note to say that Chris McFarland who's the new GM in Nashville has liked Strubel for some time going back to when Chris was still working in Colorado. And they weren't surprised that he would go out and get him. But Eric Engels had a note saying that they offered him to be traded last year. And Strubel said, no, we wanted to stay in kind of fight for a job. And the other thing I heard when Kent Hughes, the Canadians GM was still an agent, he represented Strubel. And I think they were pretty tight. So I had also heard in addition to what Eric said, which is true that Strubel preferred to stay at that time as opposed to getting dealt, that Kent Hughes had made it a personal promise that Strubel wasn't getting dealt unless it was a situation where he knew he'd be given a fair chance to play. Like sometimes you go somewhere and you're going to be battling for a spot. No, I think Hughes was like, there has to be a real path for him. And I think there will be one in Nashville. Definitely one of the things we're hearing about the predators. And we talked about Nikeshan. And I don't know that anything's been going on there for a while with Nashville and and Carolina. I think I think that's kind of gone cold. But the word is that definitely the predators want to do some remaking of their defense. So this is just the first part of it. All right. Yeah. Strubel guy that goes about it the right way, very easy to root for and not surprised that Kent Hughes would do his best to do right by him when the time came. So yeah, I just we're looking at things here, Ali. As I said, like at the bottom of the standings right now. And I guess, you know, Los Angeles is still looking for their first win. Their situation's a little bit different, but Chicago has got one win. Philadelphia without a win. Calgary without a win. And I suppose, you know, Calgary, we know where they're at. This is the early stages of their trying to build back up after selling off some pretty important pieces throughout last season. And even the summer with Lake Coleman, Chicago, they still haven't had Connor Bernard in their lineup yet, but they're still in a process and Philadelphia. I'm not too sure what to make of at this stage because none of it has really looked encouraging. Rick Talkett has kind of looked like at a loss for answers already. And so I suppose Danny Brear has kind of tried to pump the brakes a couple of times here and not letting things get too far ahead of themselves because hey, maybe they reached higher than what they really were last season in a division that wasn't particularly strong and and God hot at the right time and managed to get to the second round. Still a very young group in the grand scheme of things. Where is your concern sitting the most at with with that group of teams at the bottom here in the early stages of this season? Well, let me go in kind of reverse order. Chicago, I think they really hope to compete for a playoffs spot this year. Did you see Bidard practice this weekend? Yeah, that looks that looks like a guy who's saying, I dare you to not play me on Tuesday. Tuesdays that frozen friendsy day. Yeah, all 16. Yeah, I'll say, sorry, it's not a 16 team league. There's 16 games all through two teams. Thank you Kyle are playing. He's practicing like I dare you. I dare the doctors to say I can't play on Tuesday. That's that's what Bidard looks like to me and and we'll see how much that that changes things, but it's been disappointing for Chicago for sure. Calgary, you know, Kyle, I did want to mention Zary who scored his goal this first NHL game. That is the file that Calgary is trying to sort out as we explain in the last pod. They can't they don't want to retain on him because they still have a slot tied into a player who's routine long term Nazim Calgary. And so I think they have discussed taking a contract back. We're still working through it. They talked about it with Vancouver. I don't know how likely that is. I think there's a couple other teams still that are in on this. Vancouver was the one I heard definitively, but I still think there's a couple other teams who've looked at it and are kicking around. We'll see. We'll see, but it looks like they're going to have to take a contract back to make it work or attach a sweetener. And obviously Calgary doesn't want to do that to any great degree. I think they're really trying to be patient. You know, Craig Conroy, he's committed to this. He knew it was going to be like this. But the one thing I heard Kyle was they didn't and we kind of talked about this a bit. They didn't like how bad they were on Holmice in those two games. I think they lost what 13 to 4 or something like that in those those two games. Yeah. And I thought they really played hard Saturday. You know, one of the things I really liked was Kevin bought the the base of the puck dropped and Kevin ball ran somebody like it was like it was like he was saying I'm getting this team into the game.
fast. And they had a couple of things go really wrong. Like they had the goal they gave up but they gave up a goal. They tied it. They played really well. They gave up a goal in the last seconds of the first period. They didn't sag. It was too too after too. I mean, they lost. And that happens sometimes. But they really battled. I thought that was a much better performance. But one of the things I definitely heard was going on there was there was a lot of concern about how they'd played at home. Now I kind of stepped in at a bit on NHL Network on Friday, which is no one's fault, but my own. They were asking me about, you know, coaches are on the hot seat. And I mentioned, you know, potentially Calgary. I think I think Craig Conroy is really loyal. Like I think in all of these situations, Chicago, Philly and Calgary, a lot of this might come down to ownership and how ownership feels. Like, you know, a lot of people, you know, I remember when Peter Labielek got fired in Philly, four games into a season there. When that happened, I remember people told me, like, Ed Snyder watched the team. And he was like, I'm not, I'm not tolerating this. And that was that. And nobody was going to be able to stop him. Like when Ed Snyder decided that they weren't, they weren't. Nobody was changing his mind. Nobody was going to be able to stop it. It was going to be a change. I think in all three of these situations, I think Conroy is patient. I think Kyle Davidson is probably frustrated, but he's patient. I think Danny Breyer, no doubt he's frustrated. But I don't think he's looking to run Rick talk of that at town. To all of them, all of them to me, the wild cards are ownership. Like I watched that Philly game beginning to end on Sunday night. Because the opportunity was allowed with the schedule. And obviously I wanted to see. And they were chanting fire, talk it. That happens. But what really struck me was like in the third period is Carolina pulled away. And obviously, Carolina is a better team. How dead that building was. And you'll remember that's one of the things that Philly ownership has always kind of used to determine the which way the wind is blowing by what's going on in that building. And just, maybe it was different in the building. I'm only watching what I can see on TV, but it just seemed morose. It just seemed dead. And it's like what I mentioned with Calgary. You can't be like that at home. You cannot be like that at home. And I think in all of those situations, I see three places where people are going to try to be patient. But they're going to be looking behind their shoulders or up above them and saying, are they going to weigh in? What do I have to worry about from there? And I thought what Calgary did on Saturday night, I thought those players and coaches give a great answer. They, I'll tell you what Anaheim in a second, but I just thought they did what they had to do. They didn't fold and they were competitive. Philly is different because they went to the second round last year. Now, are they a top eight team in the NHL? Maybe not. Okay. Maybe lightning struck like they're probably not as good as they were last year, but they're not as bad as they are this year. And I think what really stood out to me, Kyle, was how quiet a lot of their players were. Like I said, ball came right out of the shoot. And he was like, I am the first duck I see, I am running over in this game. I am sending a message. I did not see that from Philly. And like, I look at some of their best players. Zegris has been really off. Mishkov has been off. Driesdale has been off. You know, I think Ladar, the goalie, you know, the team's bad. So it affects him too. Like I didn't see, I didn't see many of their guys, especially the guys they need who were doing something to change the game. Like the team just, like they just seemed in shock at how badly it's going. And you know what? I think when you have a year like they did last year, now everybody's coming for you. Okay. So Montreal was new to that this year. They showed me they're ready for it. Yeah, their results haven't been great, but they're ready for it. They're playing hard. They're battling to win games. Pittsburgh obviously last year had a year that nobody thought they were going to have. You know what Kyle, the start of this season, they showed me they were ready for it. Philly was not ready for this. They're a target now. They're a final 18 and they're not ready for it. Now, I know there's always already the talk at rumors. And what did you say? You watched his interview after the game on Saturday. What did you say? You can't help but think back to his body language and how he sounded towards the end of his time in Vancouver. And I'm not trying to compare the situations at all, but just from that starting point of I'm not sure where the answers are. And obviously it's all wrapped into frustration because you're not getting the results. We understand that, but I couldn't I couldn't help but think that because as you say, Elliott, it's it's not only teams are coming for you, but as a group, and I know Briar is kind of hinted at this too, you can't just assume because we had a great stretch run last year. We won around that it's just going to happen for us come this fall, right? You know, I think as a group, you've always got to remember all the work that went into getting yourself to that level. And it just seems that's for whatever reason, they haven't found that collective spark as a group where you've got pushback. You've got life in a game. You look like you've got the ability, even if you get down early, you can come back, or heaven forbid, you decide to take control of a game early on. I haven't seen any of that from Philadelphia in the early going. You mentioned the keyword like so many people will tell you, they think that a team is really in a bad place when the pushback isn't there, isn't there. And it's not there from Philly. Now, I'll say this. So Philly called up Bonk, and they move some people around. But the one thing I was thinking is now we know why they threw that big offer sheet of Carlson, right? Because they knew their lineup still had very big holes in it. I don't know that Briar is rushing out there. They're always looking. When you make a move like that one, it's a sign that you're not afraid. But I'd be curious to see what Briar could or would actually move there that would move the needle. Well, they're a young group, right? I think for a guy's patient as he is, who of that young crop would he be willing to move off? I agree. I'm not sure. And then they went out and brought in Michael Bunting. I think to at least provide some sort of jolt and maybe a reminder to some guys in that forward group of, if you think you're. Don't be too comfortable. Exactly. So these trying to do some things around the margins there to send a jolt, the big thing would be a trade. Absolutely, Elliot. But you just talked about how patient Briar is and can be. I wonder if he's there yet. I also am not convinced that they're making a coaching change either. I would be surprised. I've been surprised before. But I would be surprised. I think Kyle, they will try to do something to light a match underneath a group that got as far as it did last year. And correct me if I'm wrong. I mean, Briar is kind of, I don't know if it's a way to temper expectations. But he has said something effective, you know, we may be a group that takes a small step back this year after what they did a season ago. I just wonder, I don't think this qualifies as a small step. I know. But I guess what I'm saying is it's not. I don't know if this is a team that looks at not making the playoffs is not an option for us. It's a realistic look at are we still growing? And of course,
the growth has yet to show itself here the first couple of weeks. And that's the problem. All right, a couple of the things that we wanted to get to here before the final thought. I mean, talk about, there's been plenty of injuries to go around, the early parts of this season, and I'm not sure if that's totally unlike a lot of other years that we've seen, but Egor is stark and done for the year. Are you kidding me? How brutal is that? And also, you can't help but think, could you imagine if, if Dylan Garand had got claimed by somebody at the end of the season, you know, somebody told me there was a team that was really thinking about it too. I don't, I don't, I said, he wouldn't tell me. Yeah. This guy said there was definitely a team that thought about it. Yeah, a younger guy with, with upside, I'm not surprised in the least. So we know the Rangers are without you, Sturken. And I think, naturally, a lot of folks wondered, oh, well, could the Rangers be a destination for Connor, Halibuk, too? Like Kevin Wade in, after your headline segment on Saturday, he would be in favor of that. But we know Sturken still has term on his contract. We hope starting next year, he's going to be okay and, and able to play again. Halibuk still got term on his deal. So maybe it doesn't make the most sense but I don't know, is there a possibility of some sort of three way trade to be worked out that, that gets some of this settled and everybody, what they're looking for and, and moving off, what they're trying to move off of, where you at with the possibilities now for the Rangers, knowing that their number one goalie is, is not an option the rest of the season. So I agree with Kevin's theory that if I was the Rangers, I would do it and then figure out what else I had to do later. I, because it's New York, right? It's, it's Jim Dolan. It's the Rangers. I bet you have Jim Dolan watch Kevin say that he would probably order Chris Jury to do it. But luckily, there's no way that Jim Dolan's watching our garbage. But there's what I believe myself and what I kind of understand to report. First of all, the funniest thing I heard is I have a friend who's a New York sports fan and he said, the next winning the title this year, which we all wanted to see is kind of like the monkey's paw. You're familiar with the monkey's paw? I, that term no, but I can have a guess of kind of where, where this is going. There was a Simpsons episode, the monkey's paw. And when I used to go to summer camp, there was a camp counselor I had who was very good at telling ghost stories. And I think I first heard the story of the monkey's paw when I was about 11 years old. And the way he told it was really scary. And now it's more comedy. But basically for those of you who are not familiar, the monkey's paw means you get a wish. But your wish is granted in the worst possible way. Like everything else is bad. Okay. And so the next win their championship, which was incredible. But since then, Shastirkins out for the year, the Yankees didn't have judge for the playoffs. And they got knocked out. And Jackson Dart got hurt for the giants, right? So that's the monkey's paw. But if you're a true nix fan, you probably trade all of that for the next championship. Anyway, I thought it was a funny reference. But grand was supposed to start against Vancouver. Anyway, he won. They did, they played really well in front of them. It was a, you have to win that game. And they did. But I have to tell you, Kyle, like, I don't think they're going to trade for Halobock because they have Shastirkin. And also, I, unless there's a three-way deal there, I don't see a path for that deal to get done. You know, a ton of their guys have trade protection. And, you know, if it was last year, if you're the Rangers, maybe you trade LeFranier, but he looks like a completely different player. And Perot is now on Powerplay 1, as of this particular game they put them on it. And, you know, you're not trading a bowdwar or anything like that. I just don't see the deal. But I understand, like, if I was running the Rangers, I would think about it, especially if they continue to play well, go for it, and then figure out everything else in the summer. I love the idea. I love the idea. Just say to Shastirkin, you get healthy, you get your knee ready. You'll be back as our starting goalie next year. And Connor, you come here. We've got a really improved team. It's New York. Because I don't think necessarily Halobock would have wanted to go there at the beginning of the year with what we predicted from the Rangers. I just wonder now, especially as this drags on, I would look at it differently. I don't think it's going to happen. I was told it wasn't going to happen, but I love the idea. Now, the one thing I do believe is this Kyle, there started to become a lot of talk about Halobock potentially coming back. I don't think anybody involved here wants that. I don't think Halobock wants that. I don't think the Jets want that. I don't think the Jets players want that. I don't think the Jets fans want that. Nobody wants that. It's just that if this drags on, eventually he may have no choice. Yes. And we've already now know there's a website out there that's tracking every single dollar real time that he's forfeiting with the longer this drags on. It's, you think it's enough of a mess as is. But the problem is if he wakes up one morning and decides I just want to start playing again to stay ready for whatever happens, there's really nothing Winnipeg can do, right? Ultimately, they don't have to dress up. Ultimately, if a player under contract wants to play, then you have to put him, you can't say don't show up and not pay him, right? So that's right. Now, the one thing I have asked is you'll remember that when Alexia Sian didn't play that year, an arbitrator rule that he didn't lose the season off his contract. He's still owed the senators that year. So if he'll box that I would all season, he would still owe the Jets or whoever else that year, right? And one thing I've tried to figure out is like could he show up at game 80 and say, okay, I'm here to play. And therefore that doesn't happen, but there's no defined date. I think it would have to be well before that. I was just using the extreme, but there's no defined date of he has to show up or the contract doesn't drop a season. You know the lawyers are working at it. They love any reason to be involved. The billing will be big. Billable hours, big W. Yes. Great pay scale if you can get it. Just a couple more notes, Kyle, before we wrap it up, you know, we mentioned the Rangers. I kind of wanted if they would take Trent minor on waivers from Colorado. They put, he's a goalie. They put on waivers on Saturday, but he's been injured all year too. And you know, they've already got Corpus Sallow hurt Spencer Martin who backed up a grand on Sunday. He's just coming off an injury. Someone said to me, just like miners, a talented guy who could fill in for the month that Corpus Sallow is hurt, but he hasn't played. He's just coming back from an injury and they thought it didn't make sense with the whole situation in New York for them to pick him up, which I thought was fair. New York plays Tampa on Tuesday. I'm really looking forward to that. That's a good task for the Rangers and where they are. I like their, I like the way they started. I like that task for them. That's going to show us a little bit about where they are. A couple other things I just wanted to mention. Anaheim, by the way, they're four and one. This summer got really screwed up for them in a lot of very obvious ways that we don't need to rehash now. But the more I watch them play, the more I kind of think that on some level, it's too bad that happened to them because I think they have a heck of a team.
And it's not only the guys we knew like Goche and Carlson and Jackson Lakom, but and Seneca has only picked up where he left off last year. But this no Warren that I watched them the other night in Winnipeg on the Friday. He was incredible. And he played in the Quebec League at Gattano in Victoriaville. It was a second round pick four years ago. He's now played two years in the NHL. He's got three assists in five games. You know, for Beacon the Docks did a really good job there. Martin Madden, two of identifying talent. I think that a lot of people in the league are very lucky. This kind of got screwed up for Ani because they have a whole bunch of role players. And Warren is one of them that would have been perfect around these guys. And if they had kept these salaries a little bit lower, I think they would have been like the dominant team in the Western Conference for a little bit. I mean, I got to think that they're going to try to sign this guy. His contract's up this year. Like they just gave that big contract to Luno. I'm very curious to see what they're going to do with this with no Warren. Because I watch, like I said, I watch my fries like, wow, this guy is good. And I started to watch like highlights of some of his other stuff. What a, like they identified and nailed this guy. I still think they could be one of the dominant teams in the West. But they could have been more dominant. Yes. I was saying it may not happen right away. Yeah. Still a young group. Yes. But they've, they've got a lot of the pieces that you would just love to have. And it just comes down to making it all fit, as you say, because a big wrench got thrown in the things last summer. But we were never doubting who's in the room there in terms of potential. Still just very young as a whole at this point. Yeah. It's just like, it's just the, I mean, it's just the call that salary structure getting changed the way it was and that the team being put in the spin cycle the way it was. And set, you know what? Seneca's number is going to be, it's going to be massive too. If they had gotten to this earlier, they might have been unstoppable. Yeah. Well, I mean, could have tried to build, it feels silly to say modern day, but so much has changed in the last five years, but almost a modern day, Montreal West in terms of getting all their guys done at a certain number that allows them plenty of space in and around it. Anyways, it's not the world anymore for them. And also I wanted to recognize that over time, Kings, Golden Knights on Saturday night. First of all, Brent Clark is rapidly gaining a reputation as a guy other teams hate. He's a great talker. I kind of wonder if that's tied into all this. You know, I've seen some of his interviews. I've seen him in the room. He loves to talk. I assume it's part of it, but you know, McKinnon wanted to kill him earlier this year on opening night. And Jack Eichel tried to destroy him on Saturday night when he poked at the goalie. And that was a mean over time, a mean game. There was a time the Kings and the Golden Knights really hated each other. And it looks like it's back. But Joel Edminson sounds like he's very lucky because there was another time that game. The Golden Knights were trying to strangle Clark. And Edminson, he recognized what was going on. He was trying to be a really good teammate and he called Clark over to the bench. And he went on the ice. He got involved in the altercation. Now that is a no-no. You are not supposed to do that. It's like a suspendable offense, but it sounds like a person, yes, just as David. It sounds like they didn't say anything on Sunday, so he might be getting away with this. But I had a couple of people who said, are you watching this and they said, oh, yeah, it's up on our screen here as we're watching Calgary and I. And they're like, boy, he's going to get it. But it looks like he might have escaped. So I was a mean game, mean game. And we're all excited, of course, you say, for 32 teams in action on Tuesday, I'm really curious Monday afternoon, Florida Buffalo. Did you see they practiced with the Kachucks and Ben on all together, Brady zero points this year, zero points in 10 games, dating back to last season. It's just a strange stat line that continues to follow him is today the day that he breaks out because it's been after looked like he was taking the league over. From the preseason, a very quiet start to the regular season as the Panthers have gone through their troubles of injury and just making it all fit. How do you think how long do you think it'll take till Kachucks, Kachucks, Ben, it is the most hated line in the national hockey league, like 32 seconds. What was Marisa's line in the preseason going, they're going to be in jail before we get to puck drop. If I put them there, he was resisting it for as long as he could, but given where things are at. From Reinhardt wants to play center to kind of get his game gone, and he's just kind of forced for the coaching staff thinking, all right, that leaves Bennett, Kachucks, Kachucks to go good after it. It's going to be like slap shot when the police come to arrest them. Exactly. It's blood all over the jerseys during the anthem. Listen to the song. I'm listening to the song. All right. Let's get to the final thought. So your last item on headlines on Saturday talked about the NHL encouraging more colored helmets with the road white sweaters. Now we've seen this start to take hold more so in recent years. I think of the Washington capitals wearing their navy blue helmets on the road. Carolina, of course, the red buckets on the road has been a fixture for some time. And a few more teams are starting to do it here and there. But you're saying the NHL wants its teams to embrace this concept even more. That is true. And there are a lot of people out there who are really into this kind of uniform stuff. As you mentioned, Carolina gets a lot of credit for it. I've heard they really like Anaheim's orange ones and Anaheim wore orange against Calgary red on Saturday night. The sharks wore their teal against the oilers blue on Saturday afternoon, and they are in a situation where they would and this I now believe even more. I know a lot of you out there think that the Jersey talk rule is about ads. And look, I'm as conspiracy minded as a lot of you are too. I think you're probably right, but I do believe now that also a lot of this about is about recognizing players. They want their players to be recognized and the whole thing is like by taking white helmets off white ice, the players are more identifiable. And that is exactly what this is about is making their players more identifiable and recognizable. And based on what I heard in the weekend and one of the guys I've actually heard about is really been behind this is Brian Jennings, who's basically the head of the NHL's business. And they aren't ordering people to do this, nobody's doing that, but they have been encouraging teams for years to use the different colored helmets, not just the white. And based on some of the comments I heard after we talked about that, I don't think we're far away from a day where maybe someone starts proposing what if we don't wear white jerseys? Well, we've had some color and color matchups the last couple of years. And they have looked fantastic. I think about the Nordique sweaters in Montreal. Yeah. And last year, the Rangers and the Red Wings both wore their special edition jerseys in a game. That looked phenomenal. Visually, it's popping because you say it's colors in the contrast to the white ice. It makes a ton of sense. And I just, I love that it's, it would be something fresh. I can see the day. I don't know that I ever thought as a guy who grew up with home white and road dark. You know, you're, you're used to what you're used to, right? Like you grow up, you tend to romanticize what we grew up with, but. So I never thought I would see the day where we might not have whites and I don't know all that I would like that, but I'm starting to come around to it. I would just, yeah, I would like to see more examples of an all-colored matchup. Not just for the only, the special nights, make that a little more of a regular thing. Because in most cases, it's really eye-popping.
Alright, that was the final fots and with that we will take our first break here at 32 Thoughts the Podcast. When we come back, you know what it is, a new edition of The Fought Line. Stay tuned. Alright, we have reached the point in the show where everything can make sense and none of it can make sense all at once. It is known as The Thought Line, Elliot, and we got, I don't know about you. I got a lot of feedback on the shared birthday topic and I saw, yes, and I saw on The Thought Line and I guess you were saying you heard back from some Seinfeld truthers about your reference last month. Oh, did they rip me? I had about 25 of these from people saying I can't believe you said that Morty Seinfeld was Mr. Serenity now. It was Frank Costanza, George's dad. I feel shame and I atone for my error. Yes, I can't believe I blew that. Staff who is a dedicated Seinfeld listener and can recite almost everything from heart. She said to me, "Why didn't you ask me?" You know, I don't, I don't run, I don't have time for that. I don't run my podcast commentary through you. She was embarrassed to be married to me again when she heard what I did. She's got the sign up in her office of like days, consecutive days I haven't been embarrassed by my husband and it's just like back to zero. It's been stuck on zero for a long time Kyle. I'll see that. So a couple other things. I got a very pleasant text message, Kyle, from Emily Agard. Oh, nice. So Emily Agard, who is too good for SportsNet, now applying her talents at the WWE big star in the business. She was the fourth on our in-season cup last year with myself and Kyle Randy and and Emily and Emily heard that I was going to take both punishments because she wasn't available and she reached out to say she will do one of the punishments. So I told her what they were and Kyle, she's not crazy about the spicy Indian food. So she picked the cold tub. Ah! So instead of me as your cold tub date, you have Emily at some point as your cold tub date. And I think you may have just made the greatest trade in the history of mankind. Wow. Yes. This is outstanding. It's like I've just picked up Paul Paul Paul from Calgary. Don't all of you rush to disagree, okay? All right. So I'll take some logistical work to get settled here, but I look forward to it. Emily, you're a good sport. Yeah, she is. No one would have criticized you for acting like you had no idea we exist for the rest of your days. That's right. No one blamed you. Very talented. Desserts all of her success worked very hard for it. A couple more things I just wanted to do. So remember the conversation we had about the Goldie Glove and the different colored webbing. Yes. So I got a DM from a fan named Kay Mick. And he writes, "I heard the Goldie Camel talk. That's amateur hour about the gloves." And he sent me his setup. And it's a picture of him in his Goldie gear in net. And his Goldie gear, the blocker and the pads are white with painted net stitching on the blocker and the pads. So basically his blocker and a pad looks like a goalie net. Oh, that's that is clever. He sent me a picture of it. I have to say, Kay Mick, it looks great. It really does. And the reason of course is to full shooters who are looking quickly into thinking they're looking at the net, not his pads or his blockers. And he actually joked that he did it mostly so my teammates could finally hit the net and warmups. And but the best part of his outfit is the logo is a Dallas jersey. But instead of stars, the word over top of the star is chaos. They are team chaos. And a Dallas stars jersey. And he said it's a tournament team from like plastic a few years ago. He's from Philly Big Fan. I mean his his gear looked spectacular. I really appreciate him sending it. And you mentioned the birthdays. And the best one I got was from a listener named Darren Smith. And he pointed out that the all time great sports birthday Kyle is probably December 30th Tiger Woods, LeBron James and the youngest Major League Baseball Hall of Fame or ever Sandy Kofax. That is quite a trio. Alright, so I'm going to get back to the same birthday conversation here in a minute. First though. So you mentioned last week that you were told in Cassie's new book. She ripped you for a question you asked her at one of the Olympics. And I heard from Cassie. She is refuting this. That you that she missed you in her book. She said that is not the case. She also wanted me to pass along. She wants you to do your homework and research and actually get off your wallet and buy the book, rather than wait around for your free copy. That's from Cassie. She actually sent me a note too. I told her it was all good. All I wanted to do was promote the book. And I got no problem with that. I saw it. I read it. I got no problem with anything. I just wanted to promote the book. And I figured if I promoted the book and ripped myself at the same time, that would be effective. Yes. Well, you did your job once again, Elliot. Very good. So I got a DM from Dustin said, day on the birthday note, I'm a July 28th birthday as well, which is my birthday. There's three guys including myself on a beer league team, also July 28th. And he's had a birthday buddy at his last three jobs. He also, and I forgot it at the time we were talking about it, but I knew this just didn't come to my brain. Terry Fox, July 28th. Oh, really? Yes. So that's a pretty dang cool one to share with. I didn't know that. That's, uh, that's really cool. I'm glad somebody brought that up. Terry Fox, who was voted once the greatest Canadian and nobody would disagree. No. So we've got a couple more on this theme here, Elliot. This is pretty neat from Robert from Fort McMurray. Hello, dominant friends. That's a new one. Uh, enjoyed your conversation. Yeah. Enjoy your conversation about the shared birthdays part of my connection to hockey comes from the 160-ish always changing hockey jerseys I own a year or so back. Wow. I decided I wanted something special for my collection. A game worn jersey from someone born on the same day and year as me September the 21st 1990. That led me to none other than Nick Jensen. I now own one of his game worn jerseys from his time with Washington, and I highly doubt I will ever part with it. This Habs Fan is thankful. He wasn't born a day. Yeah, he finishes by saying this Habs Fan is thankful. He wasn't born a day earlier and forced to eventually shell out for a John Tavares game worn sweater. Love the podcast. God, I never would have thought to do something like that. But I guess if you have I know I gotta find out if there's somebody born. I mentioned that there were guys born on my birthday, but I wonder if there's actual on the birth date. Yes. There's one for me. I looked this up. It is the NHL's bad boy of the weekend Evan Rodriguez. Oh, that's not bad. Yeah. Him and I are July 28th, 93. All right. One more on the topic LA. Yeri from Prague. Hi, Elliott, Kyle and Dom. Oh, pro is one of the world's great cities. Yes. Well, listening to your recent pod touching birth days of NHL players, I have something for you and your stats team. Last week during the Boston Utah game, David Pastinox scored a goal on Correll Vamelka in net. Not only are they from the same country, but they were born
on the exact same day, May 25th, 1996. This was mentioned during the Check TV podcast, and I double checked it myself. So this leads me to a question, whether this is a unique case or quite common in the history of the NHL, when the score and goalie were born in the same day. Thank you, thank you for the pod. Thank you for being you. How about that? - Wow. I assume you asked and got an answer. I mean, off the top of my head, I have no idea. - I did. I have to say, similar to the same last name, same jersey number, same team, no relation, I was shocked to learn that there are 46 instances in NHL history of a goal score, scoring on a goalie that shares the same birthday, same birth year. That wasn't even the first one this season between Paschernaq and Vamelka, our first example across the league. A day previous, Kyle Conner scored on Mackenzie Blackwood, the two of them were born December the 8th, 1996. - So it happened like a day before? - It happened a day before. - Yeah. - Oh my God. - 46 times. And Conner did it to Blackwood last season as well. It's a, it feels very unique. And I guess when you look at all the goals that are scored in the history of the game, 46 is in a ton. Still way more than I would have thought. - Wow, I know 46, my goodness. - Okay, how about this one? Ben from Minnesota. Hey, 32 thoughts, pod. Kyle, Mr. Handsome, A.K.A. Eliot, and Doc. - Pop the guy in Minnesota, you are. - You're my favorite. - When a player with a large signing bonus is bought out, does he get paid based on his actual contract structure or based on the cap hit that the buyout creates? For example, if a player has a $12.5 million A.A.V. but his actual yearly pay is only $2 million because most of the money was in signing bonuses, already paid out, would the buyout pay him based on the $2 million or we effectively get paid more because the buyout is calculated off the A.A.V. - It's a great question. Under your scenario, it's only the salary that's affected by the buyout. So if somebody has, say, four years left on a contract and someone wants to buy him out and all four years has a signing bonus, the signing bonus is guaranteed. A buyout does not protect you from saving any money on the signing bonus. The buyout is calculated on what is remaining in terms of salary, so that $2 million that you referred to, that is the only buyout affected money. - Excellent. All right, one final in here. From Will and Raleigh, gentlemen. - Will. - And Elliott. (laughing) - Got him. - On Thursday night. - You did. - So last Thursday, the Hurricanes had a perfect special team's performance going three for three on the power play and four for four on the penalty kill and against Vancouver. That would seem to be a pretty rare occurrence, especially given they had three power play goals. I would see it being more common if a team had one or no power play opportunities. So my question is, has any team gone perfect on special teams, both on power play and the kill in a game where they scored more than three power play goals? Thanks for all the great content. Keep up the great work. - Off the top of my head that I wouldn't know. I assume you have an answer? - Yes, yes I do. - I'm gonna bet that that's not the record. I'm gonna bet that somebody somewhere had a better night than seven for seven. - Yeah, so what are guys able to dig up? The last time a team went perfect on special teams scoring more than three on the power play was December 29th, 2018, the penguins versus St. Louis went four for four on the power play, two for two on the PK. But you can go all the way back to 2001 the last time a team went four for four on the power play and at least four for four on the kill, the LA Kings did it to Columbus, four power play wise, seven for seven on the kill. - That's around Columbus's first season too. - Yes, I think it would have been. Where they, 2000, 2001 or '01 or '02 was their first year. I think 2000, 2001, so this would have been year two. - Yeah. - Yeah, that's a heck of a night for special teams. It does not happen often, will. - The assistant coaches responsible for the penalty kill in the power play might not have been allowed back in the dressing room after that game. - Yes, meanwhile, the ones on the other side got 40% raises overnight. - That's right. - Excellent. All right, fun addition of the thought line. You want to submit your own question, trivia related or otherwise? Please do so via email at
