A Mississippi Shrimper Has a Message for Trump About Gas Prices (w/ Maynard Dubuisson)
15m 29s
Shrimper Maynard Dubasson highlights how the soaring price of diesel—now at $5 to $6 per gallon—has devastated commercial fishing operations in Mississippi. With boats consuming 25 to 30 gallons per hour, the fuel cost is unsustainable, forcing shrimpers to shorten trips or halt operations entirely. This crisis has ripple effects: marine supply stores are losing millions in unsold inventory, local economies are collapsing, and fishermen are unable to afford basic necessities like groceries. Dubasson blames global oil prices, especially the war in Iran, and points to a lack of domestic drilling, with most rigs overseas or decommissioned. He strongly urges President Trump to ensure the $8 billion allocated for fishermen and farmers reaches the right communities and is protected from fraud. Despite widespread disappointment, the community remains loyal to Trump, viewing him as the only viable leader in a time of crisis. Maynard emphasizes that the economy depends on immediate, tangible action—not tax cuts or distant promises. He believes that without fuel subsidies and direct government intervention, the livelihoods of hundreds of families, especially in coastal areas, will collapse. His message is clear: the nation needs immediate support now, not later, and Trump must act decisively to prevent further economic devastation.
Welcome to the bulwark. I'm Will Summer here with Maynard Dubasson. He's a shrimper in Mississippi Who has been making some really interesting online commentary about Donald Trump and the price of diesel It struck me that that you're facing this real issue with the price of diesel How is that how is the price of diesel affected shrimping in Mississippi? Oh big time it's just put people out of business real dollars a gallon, but it's five six dollars a gallon You can't make it goes off that engine down there burns anywhere depending on how hard you pull it That engine burns anywhere from 25 to 30 gallons an hour Do the math? That's a lot of fuel So say if we just got a poop bag we burn in 25 gallons an hour, you know If $5 a gallon gallon what's that? $25 I mean 25 gallons at $5 a gallon. It's a lot of fuel It seems to me like you're a you're a Trump supporter But but you've been really upset with how you know the war in Iran has driven up the price of oil I mean what is the message that you have for for president Trump my message is right now to him They just approved eight billion dollars for the commercial fishermen and the Agriculture you know for the farmers and stuff and My main message to him right now is watch out for the scammers. Well, I mean he's got to do something, you know My message to Donald Trump is to go back to his staff and find out who let this slip through the crack on him because This should have been they should have saw it coming You know, he is the president of the United States. He's he's watching over all of us take care of us They should have saw it coming. So he's got a lot of people that work for him He's got a big team no one man can watch everything. That's why he has to put it together a good team and Make sure to they should have solved this coming and I'm on a all on the news thing right now. I get by with you But my message Donald Trump is is let's do what you say let's get out here And let's take let's take care of business, you know, let's get it done I'm not worried about midterms and most Americans are not worried about all these tax cuts and stuff the working class We're not worried about tax cuts. We're not worried about none of that We're worried about being able to go in the storm by groceries and we can't do it. They're too high Well, we'll talk about that. I mean, you know, you were talking on one of your streams recently about how you're having trouble You know people in your community are having trouble ordering food because diesel is so expensive Did you expect things to go this way in the Trump administration? We expected everything to go to go the opposite way. We expected groceries to go down We expected fuel to go down and it was going it was going that way and then Something happened, you know, then this war. There's always something to blame something on We need to stop all the blame and start facing the problems is what we need to do You know, it's it's right. I mean, you did a video where you walked around your town and you talked about all the people that were out of work Because of the price of diesel People can't afford to go out on the water. It doesn't make sense to just to just rip And so I mean how has this hit your area economically the price of diesel? Oh, the very hard the marine supply stores They're not moving no product. You know the supplies for these boats cost a lot of money Because the shipping the high cost of shipping everything's very expensive enough. They're not selling anything Those those stores are just about to go out of business also. You're a processing plant. So Everything to do with commercial fishing, you know, you your local grocery stores people's not going, you know, you don't have All right, let me let me skill you up on his baila battery Alabama is the strength capital of the United States they have 300 registered termited boats and baila battery now not all of them strip boats that strip boats and fish boats, but they got these commercial fishing boats They're not out here They're not out here. So that means they're not buying groceries This boat right here. That's four to five thousand dollars worth of groceries every trip for this boat Okay, so that's that's money. That's not being spent at the local Grears and and your local supermarkets is tough and the marine supplies of all these vessels usually be easily else. I'm gonna give you a ballpark figure just marines plus shackles and different things For the boat maintenance That meal usually runs three thousand dollars a trip for boat This message is brought to you by soul now if you've been listening to the show for a while You already know how much I love souls out of office THC gummies and their sparkling beverages, but now get this They've launched something new. They're not getting that. So these people's hurting. I've been going around talking to these businesses We have a very huge Supply store for marine supply story blusy Mississippi is southern supply and They're hurting and they got those people have millions of dollars of stock because they supply a Lot of vessels all over the whole United States. Well, they're backed up. They're not making no money That I mean they got millions of dollars of supplies and stuff. This not moving. It's just sitting there I don't and these people are out of pocket for all this stuff, you know, and it's just sitting there people can't buy because they're not working and Things that need fixing on the boats Things that they would normally go in and purchase for one of these boats at the supply store. They're just not doing it. Okay Just not going and spending the money because you can you know, and they got boats that's tied up Of that this got engines that do over all and they can't over all the motors can't afford them You know because they're not making any money. They're paying out more money To come out here and goes ramping and then the process shrimp has went to rock bottom Because they lived in the tariffs Of the enforced enforce started pulling back in and drove the process ramp back down. So They getting hammered pretty hard all the businesses all your local businesses ship yards What is the mood in your community about Donald Trump? I imagine this is a Republican area. I mean our people disappointed They loving we still some we all still supporting uh we loving we just We're we're all kind of We're disappointed. You know, we're disappointed. We're uh We also believe that he's going to do something about it after the midterms if The Republicans win the midterms if they don't Then we're probably pretty much in trouble because there's a lot of things he's gonna do After the midterm election if the Republicans win But if they don't win he's not going to do them because he's not going to go he don't want to go to prison There's things that Donald Trump's got to do, but he's not going to do them until he's sure The the the the the Republicans win the midterms because If they lose them lose the midterms automatically they won They're going to start trying to put him in prison and that's right That's he's been they already done got it planned So he can't do nothing Unless we win the midterms if he doesn't this business right here and a lot of businesses around here to support his business is done Oh, you ship yours. Oh, it's not just commercial fishing Look it up. There's some research angle ship yours right there and oh fast give them this see that's a very huge business They they even have a trouble you know, it just Everything's going down and it's because it is high price of fuel to energy cost to to get stuff shipped You just nothing's feasible nothing. You know, you mentioned Mississippi. They have a Senate race next week You know, and you mentioned you know shrimpers all up and down the Gulf Coast You know, do you think the the high cost of energy whether it's shipyards or shrimpers? Do you think that's turning voters in Mississippi off of Donald Trump? No nothing nothing's going People's disappointed, but nothing's going to turn them off of him because there's no other
the choice. We have no other choice. This Donald or none, you know, yes, there is no, there's no other choice. I say that just like Netanyahu and Ezra said, we don't have a choice. Donald Trump's man for the job. So, so Maynard, you know, it's been hard to get in touch with you because you've been working so much. Now, you mentioned you've been, you've been hauling shrimp tail all day. Are you, you have to work more now because of the price of diesel? No, actually, we, we might long with trips, but we're actually stopping a lot because we, we're trying not to burn any, any, any fuel. You know, where we'd be normally just dragging and dragging and dragging and looking for more shrimp. We, we just stop and trying to save fuel for the next day or to where we can stretch the trip out and, and, and get a trip on the boat. And I'm telling you right now that if that fuel doesn't go down by the time we go in and we go, we're stretching it out, but we're, we're probably going to be pretty much done next week. We've got probably 40, 35 days on this trip right now. And our fuel is going to be done because we, we weren't full of fuel when we come out. Nobody's feeling these boats up right now. We, they can't do it. We've got these engines pulled back. We're, we're not even producing like we're normally producing. Normally we'd have that thing cranked by drag and, you know, running shrimp down, but we're trying to do it as efficiently as we can to get by, you know. But if something don't go to the price of fuel, don't go down, or if the $8 billion is not distributed right to where it pays for the few, by all means, we don't want nobody paying for all our fuel. We want some money for anything over two dollars. We don't want to pay check. All we want is some help for the fuel from today forward. We don't care about yesterday. We don't care about tax cuts. We don't care about none of that. We won't be able to operate. That's what we want. So, Maynard, you got some attention online because of the picture. You posted kind of the Facebook picture where you said, you know, America's not fuel independent. We need more money for the shrimpers. I mean, were you trying to send Donald Donald Trump a message there? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yes. Yes. Most definitely. Most definitely. You know, I hear drill, baby, drill, baby, drill, baby, drill. And to be honest with you, I'm all over this guy. They ain't no drilling going on. I mean, they might have a little bit of drilling going on, but it's mainly in deep water. I don't know where it's at. They pulling rigs out of the Gulf. I'm also, I have many trades. I'm a consultant too. And I consulted for Chevron Old Company and decommissioning these old platforms of stuff. I worked for Chevron Old Company and as a consultant running these projects during the P&A. That's plug-and-dependent and pulling these wheels out of the Gulf. So, you know, after after Barack Obama, you know, everybody sold all their properties on continental shelf. They started P&A and there's hardly no old wheels around anymore. They all pulled out. So, I don't see no new drilling going on. Where, where, where they going drill? I mean, what they're going to use for rigs? All the rigs is overseas. They left. And what didn't leave is rot, it's stacked out. So, I don't know what they're going to drill with. I don't see where we're independent because we're not. We don't have a few. I mean, if we had a few that would be so high, right? It's high because we didn't get it imported. We've been getting fuel from Russia. So, how many times have you voted? Did you vote for Donald Trump in 2016, 2020, 2024? Every time, and we do it again. Yes. Are you disappointed with how the term has gone so far for you in your community? Just on the few. Just on the few because I know the fuel is most driving everything else. The fuels look great. Like I said, in my videos, the man that gets fuel down under $2 a gallon, it's going to be the person that saves the world, not just America, but the world. So, every country is suffering, and it's all because of you. Well, Maynard, as we close here, I mean, if you could send one message to Donald Trump, what would it be? My message to Donald Trump is is to put somebody in charge of that $8 billion. This is going to make sure that it goes to the right places and avoid fraud from being committed on it. That's my message to him. And we need you now to date, Donald Trump. We don't need you any other time, but now we need him now right now. And whether he wins the midterms or not, we need you. We voted for you. We put you in office, and we dependant on you. There is no other choice. Well, Maynard, thank you so much for joining us. All right. Thank you very much.

FAQs
The high cost of diesel makes it unaffordable to operate shrimp boats, which burn 25 to 30 gallons per hour. At $5 per gallon, fuel expenses can exceed $100 per hour, severely impacting profitability and forcing shrimpers to limit or stop operations.
Marine supply stores are struggling as boat owners can't afford repairs or supplies. These stores have millions of dollars in unsold inventory, and local grocery spending has dropped as fishermen are unable to operate and purchase food.
He urges Trump to ensure the $8 billion allocated for commercial fishermen and farmers is properly distributed and to prevent fraud, emphasizing that the crisis demands immediate action now, not later.
He argues that high fuel prices are disrupting the economy, harming small businesses, and threatening food security, and that only a reduction in fuel costs will allow communities to function and survive.
The conflict has disrupted global oil supply chains, increasing oil prices, which in turn drives up diesel costs, directly affecting industries like commercial fishing that rely heavily on fuel.
No, Maynard claims there is little to no new drilling in U.S. waters, and many rigs have been decommissioned. He believes the U.S. lacks domestic fuel production capacity and relies on imports, including from Russia.
