7 Sleepers & "My Guys," Must Drafts & Hidden Winners with Adam King

Welcome to the show hit subscribe while you're settling settling in Kingies got seven favorites for today's episode. And he's going to take us straight to the first one, but also good morning. Good morning. Nice to be here as always. Where we headed bright nearly all right. So I've been listening to your other shows. I've tried not to double up too much. Do you want to play your flag and somebody you should do that. Yeah. Yeah. And I have. And I have. But I left a couple of that I think you've covered add nausea with others. Colin Murray balls is one of those. So I'll get I'll get that out of the way. And then saying that the first guy is someone that you've spoken about with someone else. And that is Tyrie's halibut. Okay. Tyrie is an interesting one because obviously we know what he can do and people are the only risk is the injury, the rest, the misgames, the management, the back to backs. He has other questions. He has had a full 12 months off. And so I think he's ADP. He where people are taking him where people view him in terms of per game rank and totals rank. It varies quite a lot because some people are just not touching him in the first round and others like Steve St. Pierre. I'm very happy to take him inside the first round and I am on the Steve St. Pierre train with this one. So I am fine taking him anywhere from about pick eight. I took him in a in a mock draft. I know in a draft only lead with it yesterday. I took him with the twelfth pick, I believe. I'm just not as worried as others I think and that's because the paces were wofl last year. And they kind of their window is now they've got a vizzoob us there. They picked up Kelly Ubrei. Everyone is pretty healthy seemingly and I think they want to get back to where they were the year previous to the or the year of the injury when Tyrie's halibut went down and that was make the NBA finals. And as we know the Eastern conference is pretty loaded this year. So I just think that the paces are going to need halibut in there. A lot of the time if they want to push and be a top four top six seed in the east. And honestly, they just don't have a lot of scoring outside of Tyrie's house outside of pascal siak. I'm sorry. I just think I know and some people are how halibut doesn't score a lot. I just think he's going to have to do a lot for them and I don't know. I tend to I tend to put faith in these guys and so I believe that halibut is just going to come out and be the old Tyrie's halibut and from day one. So with the risk of managing maybe some early back to backs for the first month. But beyond that, I just think we're going to get the Tyrie's halibut and we had 18 months ago. Yeah, you actually addressed my follow up question, which is how how concerned are you at the beginning of the season that there is a bit of a slow start. It sounds after is not that concerned. And in your defense, the year he got hurt, he was actually in the 60 range after the first four or five weeks, not for any reason other than just like things hadn't clicked yet. And I told the story like 20 times on the pod, but someone in a league literally offered me Tyrie's halibut for my yaka portal. I didn't even I didn't go out to make that trade that trade landed my lap. That's how bad things looked for halibut and he finished as the number five player in all of nine cat that season. So there was still plenty of time. King your you and Adam stock now have not only taken on the mantle as two atoms, but also two people that really love punting. How does Halliburton because I know leagues, there's a way to build around it pretty easily. How does he factor into the head to head, do I lean into a build kind of construct. Yeah, he is a little bit tricky because the common sense tells you that with halibut, you lean into a guard build. So you're looking for your assists, your steals, your threes, free throws and points. And as I kind of alluded to their points is not a huge strength for halibut. So he's not a 26 28 point per game guy. He is more around that 20 points. So if you are going to lean into that build, which I did with him yesterday, I think I went with Tyrie's halibut and who did I take. I basically had to make sure I loaded up on points early. So I took halibut and I then took I can tell you exactly who I took. It would have been someone who scores points. I hope. Or lean the other way, I guess. Or you lean the other way, yeah, but I, I didn't, I know I went with Tyrie's halibut and with my first pick. I then went with Anthony Edwards with my second pick. So he fell. I picked 13, which was weird. That's a shame. It was surprising. And I was pretty happy about that because I, I never, almost never draft Anthony Edwards, but he fits that build as well. So I went with Anthony Edwards. And then I've got guys through my draft, like I took Jalen Brown, who I don't usually take as a points guy, Daris Garland. I accidentally took Zion, but you look at that one now. Yeah, he kind of fits. I mean, the free throws. Obviously, there's no threes, but he kind of gets some assists, but he'll get those points. And then I got Jalen Green late. What do I have is late. So what were the five to six categories? You were attacking with that particular team. So that was points threes assist steals free throws. So your typical guard stats. Yeah. That was what I ended up targeting. And I did recently. Well, I wasn't super happy with the draft, but it was fine. Let's go to player number two, because you got seven. And I got it. So I got to keep this thing, this framer floating along, because you and I will go an hour and 20 minutes on seven guys, if we had to where we headed for Kingies. Second dude, by the way, you guys can find Adam King. Wherever Adam Kings can be located at Adam King 91 on social media. I feel like that's really always say like anywhere podcasts are found. You're anywhere Adam King is found. Anywhere. Anywhere. All right. What do you do? Dyson Daniels. No surprise. That's the least surprising thing I've ever heard in my life. I had to thrive in there. I mean, everyone I think who follows me is fully aware of my thoughts on Dyson Daniels. And I guess I really just wanted to kind of highlight the fact that I know he is seen as a one category player. So people are. And look rightfully so he is a steals guy. If you don't need steals, you don't draft Dyson Daniels. I just wanted to point out the fact that he can do other things. So he he is a good basketball player. He gets relatively decent assist numbers. The the the Hawks aren't loaded up with higher assist point guards. I know Jalen Johnson kind of plays a bit of a point forward role. He gets some assists. But CJ McCollum, not a high assist player. Nikhil Alexander Walker, not a high assist player. So Dyson should still flirt with five. I think five to five and a half assists again. The rebounds for a guard eligible player are actually really good. So he was at 6.8 per game last year, 5.9 the season before that. So I think he can still hover around that seven. The three pointers I know last year were absolutely terrible. He was at 0.3. But the year before that he was at 1.1. So there is scope for him to get back closer to one. And the free throws also another another rough spot when you look at his overall skill set. He was barely 60% last year. If he can get that back up to 65, that's fine. But you're not looking at that category. And then the points are kind of them below average, but they're 13 to 14 per game. And then the steals are obviously where his value is built. And so speaking of punt building, he is perfect for the punt guard stats. So if you have loaded up on points, threes, free throws, kind of with your first three to four picks and Dyson is there, you can build a guard squad around him. I've done that in the past. So he does fit either build. Kind of like him as the guard build guy, because sometimes early you end up with too many assists and not enough steals and you kind of need to cover that up a little bit. Do you think there's king, a chance for him to move anywhere near where he was during his three steals per game season or was that kind of fluke and you're just hoping for more of a repeat of last year. Yeah, I think something in between. I think two point, even 2.2 to 2.3 would put him basically at number one in the league. And as we know, steals are such a low volume category that they. swing a player's value significantly. So if he goes from whatever he was last year, I think he was too right on the nose. Right on two. Okay, yeah. So even if he gets that back to 2.2 or 2.3, that's a huge deal when it comes to steals. That's an extra 10%, 15% on top of what he did last year. So that's like going from being a 20 point scorer to a 23 point scorer, which it's notable. So yeah, I think I think if you can get to 2.2, 2.3, you'll be pretty happy. Yeah, and I actually managed while you were talking to find this is the final two months of the hawks season last year. Daniels was actually at exactly 2.3 steals per game and he was number 22 ranked in nine cat. So a little bit goes a long way in those low volume categories. And that's part of how he was able to climb that high in the past. We're talking to Adam King of the old man squad. He's got five more names and I can't slow him down where we going. Let's let's go with another pretty obvious one. Amen Thompson. Someone who I pretty much draft in every league that I have. I didn't draft him yesterday, but pretty much every other league I end up with the men Thompson and spoiler alert. I also end up with his brother, a sartonson who is coming up next. But look starting with a man. Pete, I think people, the expectations coming into last year were super high. I think with Fred Van Fleet, our people were of the opinion that he's assists were going to skyrocket. He was going to be this kind of point guard forward eligible guy that was going to get elite defensive contributions with assists and all this and and he didn't do that. But he still had a really good year. He finishes the 31st ranked player over the last two months. He was a top 20 player. He took his scoring up. So the year before he was at 14.1 last year is at 18.5. So he has managed to elevate his scoring to be above average. If not bang on average. And everything else was there. He had a career high in rebounds, career high in assists, career high in steals. The blocks fell back from 1.3 to 0.9. But his efficiency held. So he was basically at 56% for the past two years. The free throws. He went from 68 to 77. So everything elevated last year. Sorry. 68, 77. Everything kind of went up. But people just were down on him a little bit. And I think coming into the issue with Fred Van Fleet back. He won't have to do as much offensively in terms of having the ball in his hands. But if those defensive numbers can come back, if his blocks can get closer to one, if the steals kind of hover where they are around that one and a half. I just think taking him, I mean, I'm happy to take him in the first round. A lot of people aren't. But even early to mid second round and leaning into punting as well. And I'm doing a show on first round pairings and punting and all sorts of things later on today. He fits a lot of builds. He is a perfect pair for a lot of those first round players. So how do you think through that kind of thing? I know we have four more players to get to, but you're, I want to pick your punt brain while I've got you. How do you, how do you wedge him in with various first rounders? So, well, I've got my list here. So he fits. Not to ruin your content for your league of show, but I think you can pair him with someone like a Wembee. So for instance, if you have the first pick, is a man going to be there at pick 24? Probably depends on your league a little bit in the mindset of other managers. But if he is there pairing him with Wembee, I think you can do that. You can pair him with, you can pair him with Yokech. He's actually quite a nice pairing alongside Nicole Yokech. Both in terms of punting or complimenting what Yokech does. Who else did I have in there? Janus. So the punt free throw three build. Jan, a man fits that really well. Scotty Barnes, who is on that cusp of being kind of a turn guy at pick 12, 13. He's current Yahoo ADP is 12. So you compare Scotty Barnes with with a men Thompson and go into a punt points and threes build and I do that a lot. So yeah, I love a man anywhere in the second round. And like I said, I'm actually, if I've got a punt strategy in mind, I'm okay taking him at pick 10, 11, 12. Remember to subscribe to the show as Adam takes us to his fourth player of the day. I wish I was smart enough to have brought up both windows while you were talking because you did say he was coming and I was like, dude, dude, dude, just floating along over here. Oh, it's fine. I'll pull his face up there. He's not near. You can just leave the same photo up. They look the same. That's true. Different statues. Whoopsies. It's okay. I'll figure it out. Don't worry. I'm mildly competent at this stuff. He's going solid like 60 slides later than his brother though. He is. Yeah. Yeah. Obviously not someone you need to target anywhere near as high as a man. And to be fair, he hasn't developed to the way that Amin Thompson has, particularly offensively, everything else very similar. But in Detroit, he's just he hasn't needed to do as much and he doesn't look as polished. On the offensive end, yeah, he was at 10 points again last year, which is certainly well below what you're even considering to be average. He doesn't hit any threes. He really doesn't attempt many threes either. He does his work inside. And again, exactly like Amin Thompson, he fits the build of defensive stats, rebounds, field goal percentage, and low turnovers. And that's exactly what he does. Last year was disappointing. I think his role was up. It was down. His minutes were a little bit inconsistent. He ended up with by averaging 26 minutes again. And I think the hope was that he would push closer to 30. And the hope again, this season is that he will push closer to 30. I have a little bit more faith this year, just given the money they've invested in him. And Tobias Harris is gone. I know John Collins is there now, but I don't know, they seem to be positioning themselves where they need to have a SAR on the floor a little bit more. He's lack of floor spacing is an issue. And I do think that the whole Jail and Durin situation is going to impact a little bit of how a SAR is utilized this season because Durin doesn't space the floor either. So if he is there, having he and a SAR Thompson on the floor together can be a bit of an issue. But I just love a SAR. You can get him in the, I don't know what he's IDP is. Probably in the 70s. Maybe it might even be later. Let me see if I can dig this out. I think it might be 80s. Might be the 80s. Yeah, here we go. I can zoom in on this. I can pop it up on the screen. There we go. The tracker. I knew it would come in handy. It is zooming in 89.7 right now. So around that 90 mark, which I think is a no brainer. Even if you're not punting specific categories, just the boost that he gives you in field goal percentage defensive stats and the rebounds, as I said, out of position rebounds for a guard eligible player. He's more of a forward, obviously. But yeah, I think and in a punt build, that specific punt that I do a lot, which he's punting points threes assists and free throws, he is like a first round player. So I'm always happy to kind of jump up and grab him in the 50s or the 60s in that build. And unfortunately, other managers are aware of that. And so they often jumping. They're just trying to kneecap you at this point. You got to get a new, you need to make a new profile on your various fantasy sites that just has the name like, I don't know, who's a fun character you like from a TV show. Just give you no, they'll figure it out if you name yourself Jerry Seinfeld and you go into one of these. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you got to hide your identity now. Yeah, look, I mean, it's as analysts, it is the curse, I suppose, is that anyone who follows you knows who your targets are and yeah, they go after them, but that's that's fine. I am going to suggest to fan tracks. I'm sure they won't do it, but I'm going to suggest to them that they offer, because we use their auction all their that auction format for a lot of our drafts when it gets to the time for real drafts. I am going to suggest they do an anonymous bidding feature where a league mates can't see who's bidding on a player because as soon as guys in my league see me bidding on someone, they just beat me up because they know. Yeah, I mean they know you're you got your thing and your avenue is a good one. You just you can't play with people who know who you are because like now they know it's coming and if they all if they conspired against you or one or two of them just took your key guys around too early. Yeah, they may be messed up their own team a little bit but you'd be in a bit of a tight spot. The beauty of your quadruple punt is that you can take a star Thompson in the fifth or sixth round way ahead of where he's going but he still works for your team like as long as you get your main four or five dudes it's damn hard for teams to beat you in any of those main five categories but you still have more names to get to and you also have a show coming up in about nine minutes so let's go to the next one you got three names left. All right, so the next one is Chet Holgren who I haven't really landed him in a lot of spots but I just I think I'm maybe higher on him or maybe others are gaining traction but I think the the fact that he was when beat out of the playoffs or whatever term we want to use he didn't have a good playoffs. I think people forget though how good he was last season for a team that has lost some of its depth haven't they haven't added anyone or any significant pieces to that center rotation so he is still clearly the starting center slash power forward alongside as a heart and sign and last year he was the 18th ranked player and if you look at his numbers over the last month the last two months even the last three months he was almost a first rounder he was top 14 over the last three months top 11 over the last two now obviously a lot of his value comes from the blocks category but he gets rebounds he hits threes he's despite the fact that he hits threes he is still near that 55% from the field he doesn't hurt you in in the free throw category which a lot of these beings do and so I just I mean there's not a lot of value at the top of the draft obviously you're not you're not kind of finding someone at pick 15 that's going to be the third ranked player but well maybe you will but with chat I think I just think people off him a little bit yeah and I think he could be a top 15 player again this year like I said the thunder they need him out there and they've lost some of their scoring depth and defensive depth with ludort going so I just don't see much changing for him I think he can still flirt with mid second round value early second round value and he's someone that I think you can get if you've got your ADP shoot up there still where is he sitting currently 25.4 yeah I think if a guy that you can get early second round that has mid first round value even potentially early first round I know the lack of points is an issue it's something you're going to have to recover from but other than that I think he is well worth a shot that was actually what I was going to ask you about that's it's a hard sell I think in the second round at times because he's so far behind the other scorers is he a guy you would you know for me more of a roto type player he's a guy that I feel more comfortable taking in the second round because I'm just balancing a bunch of stuff with head to head it almost feels like he's the guy that should pair with the two or three lower scorers in the first round only at the risk of kind of bludgeoning something that like an anti-edwards or a Jason Tatum or something like that those guys are getting off to such a great scoring start but you put chat with someone like a Halliburton or Jalen Johnson or how even a Kate Cunningham was not as high a score as the other first rounders is that where you think he fits a little bit better yeah I think that is the versatility that he brings like I said he doesn't hurt you in the free throw category that that's a big one because you can pair him with someone like a Halliburton who whose value he's built on free throws to some degree and he won't hurt that neither of those guys are high points guys but you're going to get if you if you draft those two for example you're going to be pretty good in least competitive in almost every other category three's rebounds assist steals blocks and percentages so yeah I think he is a perfect pairing much like a men topson but for different reasons with a lot of those guys in the first round two players to go five minutes before we've got to get Kingie on his other show I think we can do it who's your sex the penultimate name yeah one of these won't take long so this guy Vijay Edschcomb who oh man this is this is a surprise right here he's he's just growing on me a little bit and I know but rightfully so people are swerving away from him a little bit because of everything that's happened in Philadelphia all the pieces that they've added to the puzzle but and I get that so I think that certainly does limit his upside he was a 60th ranked player last year so I definitely don't see a world where he exceeds that by more than maybe around like a top 50 player I think would be best case scenario for him but just with the pieces that they've added I wouldn't be surprised I've mentioned this with someone on another show I don't remember who it was I wouldn't be surprised at the end of the season if he is the the Philadelphia player that has played the most games and the most minutes per game because I think just he is obviously super young he is versatile he can defend a number of positions I kind of have in my mind that he's a little bit like the Josh Hart of Philadelphia and and by that I mean not that he has the same skill set or brings the same stats to the table but if anyone gets injured if anyone misses time he will be a beneficiary so if LeBron misses time if Tyris Maxie misses time if Jaylen Brown misses time I think Edschcomb will just step up and do a little bit more so I think there's scope for him even though he's probably the fourth or fifth option when they are fully healthy it's there's just a pretty easy pathway for him to step in to be the third or the second depending on rests and manage manage games and things like that and I think that the 76s it would make sense for them to ease up on Tyris Maxie a little bit this season so not not force minutes into him now that they have all of this depth but I think Edschcomb they can just roll him out there and he kind of just does his job to perfection I have many follow-up questions but I haven't to the time I want to make sure you get to your last guy before you get to get on your other program here let's do that let's do the last one let's see if we got 20 seconds at the end if not so be it it's not like you and I don't talk like once every two weeks anyway on this show who's who's the number seven who's the point after on this one the last guy very it's a very quick one it's not a guy that I'm going early on it's just a late round guy that I've kind of planted my flag in and that's your iron bear and jay I just really like him as someone you can get it pick 120 or 130 and I think that he is going to play a pretty big role now that Nuzread is gone he he projects to be a player very similar to Rudy go there although obviously a lot younger so he can he can run the floor he can be a room runner good defensive player I'm just certainly more than willing to take a chance on him with my last or second to last pick and if he plays 20 minutes I think you're looking at a guy that could get you 10.7 rebounds and one and a half blocks which is pretty valuable all right you gave me 90 seconds to ask you a question about VJ edge come why not just take Jalen Suggs 25 picks later aren't they basically the same fantasy guy similar yes they are I so Suggs is a very interesting one as well because he does he falls he goes a lot later than he should based on what he can do on a basketball court I just I just think Suggs he's going to continuously be injured yeah that's fair because because of the style that he plays he is he is just he has no fear he does no he's a grassy body he is very much like a football player I think he he just throws his body into puts it in positions where injuries are bound to happen so I love Suggs but my worry is that he he plays 50 games or 55 games that would be probably what we're expecting where I think edge can play 75 games obviously we can't project injuries but edge can just looks like someone that he's a little bit more in control I think Suggs is a little bit out of control he has a little out of control well you're jumping on a live show right now where can people go watch that uh yes I think Kirin will be streaming it on on YouTube it definitely be on YouTube
