Speaker 1On the show, I've spoken to loads of people about the things they do to keep themselves feeling young. We've talked about a lot of things, some that make sense, some that really don't. But for today's episode, we've partnered with Tombola and Breast Cancer Now to talk about the one thing we all need to feel our best, human connection, which is something that matters to Tombola, like with their community who chat, check in, and share every day. That's why they've teamed up with Breast Cancer Now to turn those conversations into impact, encouraging each other to check their breasts. We know how important our relationships are. The people around us make us who we are. It's our nearest and dearest who check for us and that we look out for as well. So this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Tombola and Breast Cancer Now want you to get out with your friends for a walk and a talk, a chat like you always do, but also encourage them to regularly check for signs of breast cancer. Today, I'm joined by Alexandra Burke. Alexandra first became a household name in 2008 when she won the X Factor with that unforgettable cover of Hallelujah, which went on to become the fastest selling single by a female artist in UK chart history. Since then, she has had a string of hit singles. Many of the crew we're dancing to went up on today, taken on huge West End roles, including currently playing Shocker. Suck a con in I'm Every Woman. Welcome, Alexandra. Thank you so much. Thank you for having me. There's still a bit more. She's become a familiar face on our screens, appearing on shows like Strictly Come Dancing to RuPaul's Drag Race UK and more. While away from the stage, Alexandra's also been incredibly open about family, loss and leaning on the people closest to her. There. Yeah. It's light and dark today in this chat.
Speaker 2Yeah. And so is life. Yes, exactly. I was just about to say these chats are the chats, I think, that are good. Good to have. It's good for the soul. And there's loads of light and dark in I'm Every Woman.
Speaker 1Yes, there is. Oh, gosh, yeah. How do you balance that? Do you take it home with you?
Speaker 2You know, it's funny you ask that because I started this show January 12th when we had the first run of it and I was taking it home. And I remember my partner calling me miserable and saying that you're just bringing your work home. This is awful. And it's because I didn't know how, I didn't have the tools to snap out of. I didn't know how to play Shaka's life. So I was bringing her home because I was going through research online, researching her past and basically effectively studying her. And so I was living, breathing and eating Shaka Khan. It was just a joke. Like, it was just ridiculous. But so recently, it's taken me a long time to get to the point where I can leave her at the door and in the dressing room and walk away from the show and not bring her home. But now I'm on the last week of the show and here I am only having just learned that tool. Only just. It's taken me months. She might come back as you say goodbye to her. You might be like, this is it.
Speaker 1Well, actually, maybe Shaka Khan for breakfast? Shaka Khan for lunch?
Speaker 2Right. Well, my children certainly say it because every time I'm walking out the door, like this morning, they were like, mommy, are you going to play Shaka Khan again? Are you off to Shaka Khan? And I was like, no, mommy's doing something else this morning. But tonight I'll be playing Shaka Khan on stage. And I mean, that baffles me. So you've got two small boys. Yes. You're doing this. Gorgeous. And I know why you're doing this because breast cancer now means so much. A lot to me. Yes, absolutely. And I think for me, life is about awareness. And I think if you are in a position where you can speak up and do good things and speak about things that hopefully will change people or help others, we have to do it. And we are so privileged to be in that position to sit with each other right now, have a conversation and hopefully it touches and moves and inspires someone to do the right thing and check. This is a very special episode. Yeah. Can you tell me a bit about playing Rachel in The Bodyguard? Oh, my goodness.
Speaker 1Okay. I bet you liked when you brought that one up.
Speaker 2Do you know what? That one was really funny because the dream was always to do something in my career with Whitney Houston. And for that to be the first ever role that I auditioned for and then got the role at 23 and said, actually, it's not for me, turned it down. And I turned on a very big opportunity to open up a show in the West End. And I actually didn't understand what it meant at that. Young age as well, to be honest with you. But turn it down was good for me at the time because I didn't have the stamina to execute eight shows a week. I didn't have the vocal capability to execute eight shows a week at the time. And in Whitney's key, it was just impossible for me. And I'm a realist. I'm like, if I can't do it, I'll say, but if I can, I'll 100% give my all. Don't you think they know what they're doing, though? And it wouldn't have been impossible for
Speaker 1you or they wouldn't have offered you the role.
Speaker 2I think I was just too young.
Speaker 1But there is something maybe in the universe that made you say. Yeah. Hold on. Yes. Because to be 23 and turn something down.
Speaker 2Well, yeah. It's very brave. Simon Cowell did tell me he actually thought I made the wrong decision. I remember going to him in the label and said, I've been offered this. And he was like, you've turned down a big opportunity there. You should have said yes. And I was like, no, it wasn't right for me at the time. And it came back again because it was always meant to be, I believe. And it came back three years later at 26. I closed it in London, not knowing it would change my whole life. And I think if I'd started it early at 23, I would have been able to do it. If I'd had to have stopped the show for any reason because of not being able to do it, that would have hindered me more than anything. And I don't think I would have been booked for any other show. Because people would have gone, right.
Speaker 1They would have loved it with X Factor and also the racism you were facing at that time. Well, there was so much going on.
Speaker 2So much. They would have eaten that up. Yeah. And I just think everything happens for a reason. Yeah. Every choice that you make, if you can really sit with yourself and say that you have no regrets in those choices, then you should believe. You should believe it was the right choice for you if you hold no regret. And I hold no regret with saying no at the time at 23 because it came back at 26 when I was 26 years old. And it was just an amazing experience to do it for three months in London. And then it just, here we are, here I am 12, I think 12 years later, still doing theatre. Yeah. And I've got a career in theatre, which I'm very lucky to have because I didn't see that. I'm not a trained theatre actress or, you know what I mean? I've never done anything like that. So very lucky.
Speaker 1Yeah. Do you think opportunities? Do you think opportunities have a way of finding you? Like the universe knows what's right for you?
Speaker 2Well, I do think that the universe does present things to all of us. And it's whether you believe it is for you or not to take that leap of faith and go for it. But I manifest. I do a lot of manifestation. And I love it. And everything, I remember walking in the park the other day with my sons, with my partner, with our dogs. And I kind of stood back and looked at them and I went, this is it. Everything I've prayed for manifested. The house, the cars, the kids, the dogs, the partner, like my friends, like people I want in my life. And as I'm approaching 40, I'm like, I've got two more years until I turn 40. And I'm in a really beautiful place of knowing who is around me. And in my 20s, I weren't like that. I mean, I had so many acquaintances around me. And in my 30s, I'm like, actually, I've got the right amount. And people who I love and people who love me in my life. And it's so, it's so beautiful. To be able to say that because it's taken me years to get to that point.
Speaker 1Tell me about manifesting, performing with Beyonce. Oh, my gosh.
Speaker 2I didn't think that was going to happen, by the way. I still think it's going to happen for me. It needs to happen for everyone because apparently she's here in London, guys. Yeah, that's what I heard today. I was like, well, I should be with her today or yesterday whenever she was here, but whatever. Well, if you had a gap in the calendar. Darling, there's no gaps, darling. We're booked together. We're here today. Can you imagine what matters?
Speaker 1Let's manifest. I'll get back to you. Back to the question in a moment, but maybe she's going to. I'm every woman.
Speaker 2Do you know what? If she did, that would be so lovely because I know that Shaka loves Beyonce. Yeah. And Shaka doesn't, you know, she doesn't mix up her words at all or how she feels. And I know that she does love Beyonce. I think for me, singing with her, my goodness, was so special. Like, I found out literally at midnight the night before, the morning of really, yeah, midnight. Didn't know it was going to happen. The whole week didn't know who I was going to have a duet with. I even said to Simon, just bring my mum on stage or just let me sing with Cheryl. Like, they're both singers. We can make it work and we can just have fun. Yeah. And that just didn't happen because Simon was like, I'm working on something. I'll soon find out. But obviously the deal must have been done from before I found out because it was the front pages of the papers. I remember driving up to Wembley where I'm doing Shaka Khan now. And I remember the little newsagent with my face on the front page of the paper going, the million pound duet, it said. And I was like. Well, someone knew. And of course, back then I was only 20. I didn't know how it all worked. You know, things have to be approved for it to be on the front page from hours before. But it was just amazing that he managed to get Beyonce on that stage. And I remember saying to him, I don't care if I don't win. I've won in my heart because I'm singing with my idol. I know. In 2008, Beyonce as well. Right. And I remember she emailed and she said, singing with you has helped me as much as it's helped you for our careers. And I thought, gosh, what a grace. A graceful woman. Yeah. She's so gracious in everything she does. One of the hardest working women in the business. I'm, as you can tell, still a massive fan of Beyonce. And I think I will be forever.
Speaker 1Alexandra, across X Factor, Strictly and the West End, you've been through some really intense experiences with people. Yes. Who would you say became your unexpected keeper?
Speaker 2My unexpected keeper? You mean as in like friendships and in life? Or you mean in the industry? Importance of people who just looked after you.
Speaker 1at that time, anytime. time yeah across the industry
Speaker 2i suppose well i would first and foremost say my mom my mom was my biggest um support network spiritually she still is um my biggest protector was my mom um and my family i have to say my sister man my sister if anybody mucked around with me my older sister i would i would fear what she would do to other people because she was she still is so protective i'm her baby sister and she's so protective over me but she like wouldn't stand for anything whereas i'm very extremely forgiving okay forgetful once i forgive i forget what someone's done to me very quickly and it comes out my mind because i don't hold on to things oh that's great my sister's my biggest reminder that when i then become friends with that person again and everything's rosy she goes just remember what they've done to you on this date at that time and you came crying to me and i go oh yeah yeah yeah and it just goes because i don't like to hold on now but i have to say my mom and my sister are the two people like when everything happened with x factor at such a tender age of 19 when i really think about it i'm like i was only 19 on the show it's baby do you know what i mean and them two were like my two rottweilers in the background that if anything happened they would be right there
Speaker 1and is your sister the first person you would call with good
Speaker 2news yeah to this day she is the one that i will call and say she needs this has happened or we speak every day without fail 7 30 is our coffee morning with the kids because she wants to see the kids on the phone and we have 25 minutes on the phone and then if i'm going to work i don't always call her in the car and we just have a little catch-up um and which i think for me i know my mom's up there smiling going my daughters are in a great place because you know you have ups and downs of siblings don't you and we've certainly had our fair share but we've had our fair share and we've certainly had our fair share and we've but right now we're in such a wonderful gorgeous
Speaker 1place and i think for women especially um and men because male friendships are really important so important certainly in my experience with female friendships whether you have sisters or you don't yeah whether your mother is in this universe or another yes it is our job to like sister each other and mother
Speaker 2each other 100 and i have i i'm so blessed that i have a very small circle of girlfriends but i know i we check in on each other we have the group chats we make the group chats we make the group chats we make the group chats we make sure that we're we're we're always looking out for one another and and i and i was actually reflecting in the car on the way here and i and i said it to myself on the phone i was like i feel so lucky that i've got this friend that friend that friend and i could reel off about five of my girls and go and i said they would always be there for me and i'd always be there for them and you kind of don't even when you don't think about it and don't think we do it as on purpose but we we kind of take these moments for granted because you don't always think to yourself that they're gonna you know that you always think that actually they're always going to be there but you never know what tomorrow is going to bring so you have to check in on the ones you love i'm
Speaker 1impressed that you've been able to you've had a lot of wisdom even from turning down the whitney houston role at 23 i'm impressed that you invest into those friendships like you invest into your romantic relationship like you invest into motherhood yeah because if you don't it really can just it falls apart yeah yeah it feels like we're constantly checking in with the people we care about tombola's research recently found that women 58 percent know someone who's being diagnosed with breast cancer so it's something that affects so many of us but perhaps isn't something we naturally talk about with our friends so i think you seem like someone who would know how to naturally bring that conversation up
Speaker 2with friends yeah i if i'm honest with you i i don't um feel uncomfortable with bringing it up i rang i literally ran four people in the car on the way here um four of my friends and was like yeah and i did that because we were having this chat today i make it a thing to check because of having babies having breast cancer in our family um and and then my breasts have actually changed since losing weight losing the baby weight then putting back on weight when i got had my second pregnancy and you just can't take it for granted and i remember the first time i found a lump and it was i think i was 21 i freaked out and i remember going calling my mom and i was like mommy i found a lump i found and i just you know i was like i'm gonna go and i'm gonna go and i'm gonna your brain just goes there right yeah and my mom actually came with me to the hospital to get it checked and and it was absolutely fine thank god it was just you know it was it was it was nothing big at all but the fact is if i didn't check if i didn't if i wasn't aware if my mom wasn't always on my case to check because she really was always on my case um i probably would just be that person that just goes oh it's fine yeah it's fine everything's okay you know and seeing tom research that nine percent i mean nine percent of women actually talk about it it's so low it's too low it's too low and i and it just made me think to myself why am i not asking that question because i'm come i feel comfortable enough to ask so why am i not it's because i naturally think that everything's okay and that's not the way to to be asking the question giving people the the chance to actually go actually yeah i need to think about that
Speaker 1and you forgive and you forget yeah natural it is still good to be a cautious optimist absolutely and like you said you found a lump at 21 they're full of like cysts and lumps and things yeah and you might as well just go in and keep that optimism and cross it off your list cross off your list yeah absolutely um what is your biggest unjustifiable time waster so the thing that you know you've just lost 45 minutes to if you have 45 minutes to lose if i'm
Speaker 2honest with you before children it would probably be being online yeah doom scrolling now i have kids i don't have that time i don't have that luxury of looking in the mirror if i was oh my goodness you are hilarious i would i'll just be like i wish i wish i had that
Speaker 3confidence i am alexandra
Speaker 2you are killing me i'd look at my arms oh my god you're killing me this is brilliant this is yeah i wish i had that confidence i don't know i'm threatening
Speaker 1my partner every day i feel like i might come home i might not what are you gonna do are you i know you're in a great relationship and i luckily am married to a really great man now my first marriage we'll see about the next one but right this one i like i love my current husband so much so far yeah yeah we just we just keep it right here right now um but i have been in toxic ones where i read things about keeping a man interested and that biologically when they were like cave dwelling they liked multiple women so that's why women change their hair and that's why women change their clothes and change their makeup and then for a while i was doing like different wigs i even bought these tattoo sleeves right oh wow i'm listen i was in my 20s right i didn't have right i didn't have the wisdom that you had i was going off piste but does your partner feel like is it good to be married to an actress because maybe there are slightly it's a little chaka khan alexandra burke what's a little whitney houston alexandra burke do you think that it keeps your life spicy overall playing all these wonderful characters
Speaker 2makes us tired okay i'm just always tired jesus lord take the wheel i basically feel sorry for darren sometimes okay because actually it's weird you actually asked me this question because i only brought it up with a friend the other day and i was like how does he put up with me and i say that with love i am always on the move my brain is a thousand miles per hour he knows that he is the love of my life and he will always be my priority but my kids yeah my kids now are the biggest priority for us both and they are so young and i'm always on i'm always out on the road doing something i'm trying to drag my kids on tour with me like and i can't do it now because one's just started reception so i've lost that do you know i mean it gets harder it gets harder yeah on the grid and i just and i said i said it the other day to a friend i was like i feel sometimes i feel for darren because i come home and i'm exhausted and i just all i have in me is to make sure that there's food on the table for everybody and i'd make sure that that's done i make sure the laundry's done i make sure the house is clean but what i don't have time for is then to get into bed and go let's have pillow talk i have time for that darling no at the moment i don't have time i will make that time yeah but at the minute i don't have the strength to do any more than make sure he's all right kids are all right i'm all right get to work get to bed try and prioritize sleep if i can um because i need my voice to heal and at the minute if i'm completely transparent with this show it's been the hardest thing for me vocally to heal my voice because i'm not sleeping enough no and if my voice goes i can't do a show and i can't make my money so i'm like my priority is to make sure everyone's okay and then get to bed right and then we have six dogs just to throw that in there like our life is wild but he actually handles it with grace i don't know how i'm grateful that he does because he's not snapped at me yet no but i don't think he would because i try my best to juggle you can see you're trying you can see i'm trying like i try and do date nights once uh twice twice a month um and try to prioritize that and the other day we done the date night and i'm like what's the date night and i started yawning at the table and i was like baby i really need to get to bed i just done the matinee and and it was and i had one show that day and i was like right today i booked child care we'll put the kids to bed and then we'll go on our date night we went but i was yawning and i just felt so bad you know i mean but and i always say to him this time is temporary it's not forever it's not our turn not yeah it's it's right now but you're just gonna get through
Speaker 1life because you tell the boys it's not your turn it's not your turn but i think we need to tell ourselves sometimes it's not your turn yes they'll be older i'll sleep in as loud as i want i'll do what i like we'll have our date nights back but right now it's not and he gets that and he gets and he's really understanding and he's a great dad so what's a non-negotiable then do you have anything that you do to make you feel better I go to the gym sorry yeah
Speaker 2my gym is my savior I'm actually going after this and then I'll do school pickup but my um my savior my one thing is the gym it's the one place where I go no one talked to me for 45 minutes an hour and then I say that and then sometimes I'll have my manager on the phone on speaker whilst I'm lifting weights and we'll go through stuff whilst I'm in the gym the only time I won't take a call is on the run so if I'm out running or training for a marathon those are the times where I'm like I can't take a call because I actually don't have the stamina to talk to anybody and run but if I'm in the gym that's fine but it's um yeah I'm a little bit of a gym head it's my piece it's it's what I do I listen to podcasts a lot yeah and if I'm in the shower and stuff I have that on or if I'm washing my hair I put a podcast on I love more than anything in the world going up before half an hour before bed and putting it on all my skincare flossing my teeth like doing that whole thing and Darren gets so upset with me because he's like you take half an hour to 45 minutes upstairs I'm like yes because I'm dealing with my skin and my skin matters okay I want to feel good I want to put a face mask on I want to relax and he does complain at that sometimes I think that's the only thing he complains about it's just like you're upstairs for too long marry someone ugly hey poor dental hygiene
Speaker 1I know beauty's on the inside okay amen so obviously it's so important that we take time for ourselves indulge and enjoy ourselves but it takes minutes to have a conversation about yes checking
Speaker 2your breasts absolutely it does it only takes a minute
Speaker 1yeah who are your friends with whom you have the most unfiltered
Speaker 2conversations okay so one is in there or where is she summer is in there if she's in there listening somewhere um my sister summer Nadia I can just reel them off Sonia Lizzie Latoya Lynn Marie Louise they're all so upset I've mentioned their name but it is what it is because they are my girls and I've and I've probably forgotten some in in me just mentioning loads but I have oh my friend Chloe's well she's just a diamond um but I have so many strong amazing powerful women around me and I've just reeled off nearly 10 women that I can just go boom to and and not worry about crying oh my goodness only yesterday I was sitting with one of my really good friends Lois and sat with her and we're all going through stuff and I think with motherhood as well you kind of when you don't have your mum and you're going through big significant life changes you just want your mum and Lois and I sadly don't have our mums so we just had a moment and you know we also acknowledge that we are strong and we're doing this thing called life as mothers who our mums never met our children and that's some serious stuff to deal with and that was the first time I was going but actually I am strong and my mum wants me to my mum wants me to say those words that I'm strong and I can do this but for me like having that those friendships and those people in your life that can make a difference that you can offload to is so important and probably out of the girls I've just mentioned four of them I've spoken to this morning gone when's the last time have you checked but when's that some check your breasts because I need to know that you're checking them and when we finish this conversation the rest of them I will ring because I will check in and say have you done it when's the last time you've done it please just do it I strongly recommend a group chat do you know I really should and actually make because some of the girls that don't actually know each other but I could make I can actually build a connection they've all met but they don't know each other well and that actually could be something that I could I mean I'm just making it my personal mission to streamline your life amen you know what I'm actually I'm going to give you my number and I'm going to text you and I've done yeah chat and say to you baby I've done it
Speaker 1I'm not usually an advocate of having a PA I meet so many men yeah you don't you're the first person I've ever met yeah I would be all right with you having a PA
Speaker 2yes and I did have one up until two years ago okay but I am and if she's listening
Speaker 1check your breasts absolutely yes okay agreed according to tumblr's research in the past month 41 percent spoke about work with their friends 40 percent about body image that's still sad isn't it 38 percent about aging having lost your mother having lost people in our lives when you get to be in your 40s you're like aging just means you didn't die it's a wonderful privilege isn't it I'm telling you now if we can
Speaker 2get to 40 and and and a be content happy achieve things in life and have no regrets we are living
Speaker 1our best so why do you think some conversations are easier side by side like on a walk rather than sitting opposite someone I feel
Speaker 2like I love going on walks by the way I'm that well what's it yeah I'm exactly yeah I'm that and I'm a kind of dogs if you don't mind goodness are you ready this is not part of the chat but I'm really okay so upset about your life choice well it's it's it's a bit mad I always say it's a house full of love yeah um we've lost some dogs and only recently lost another one I'm sorry and he was my little OG my little prince we recently he was a chihuahua we only lost him last was it not last week the week before I'm sorry what day is it today Wednesday the Wednesday it's two weeks sorry today you're welcome yeah two weeks today two weeks ago and it's hard he was 15 he lived a very beautiful life um but right now we have two German Shepherds and they are our family protection dogs and then we have a miniature golden doodle I'm going to count now guys I'm very sorry miniature golden doodle and then we have three toy poodles wow so those are the six um and they I say it's a house for love and I've always been an animal lover and a dog fan and in our culture Jamaican culture you don't actually have dogs in the house right they're all outside so when I convinced my mum when I was younger for us to get our first dog I couldn't believe she said yes and I was like well this is amazing because we've now got a dog in the house but the dog wasn't allowed on our beds on the sofa well we soon won that war the dog was on my bed it was on the sofa and my mum kind of just had to give in because she realized that her children just love animals and I've grown up with them love animals love dogs and my children love dogs the one thing I'm that's what they keep doing and I'm like you cannot do that so that's the one thing which I'm trying to teach to kids at the minute because they're so young um but yeah those are the dogs that's so but but back to your question going on a walk for me I think I find that going on a walk and talking things out like I'm not going to lie to you my partner and I when we know we need to talk about something quite deep we go on a walk for it and I think we do that simply because face to face like this talking about really important things can often quite feel intimidating um and feel like maybe you've got something that you're not going to do and you're not going to do it you can't think because actually you're in your face to face you're having to look someone in the eye yeah whereas on a walk there's nature yeah there is things that you can kind of distract yourself with and it maybe it might open you up to think more and relax you a bit more actually I find that when I talk to my partner on walks and we talk about some serious stuff we're quite relaxed on what we're hand in hand sometimes and if we're not on a good day we're not hand in hand and eventually we end the walk hand in hand but I think it's nicer because you you relax more on a walk I think yeah my
Speaker 1friend comedian Judy love check your breasts Judy love Judy her family's Jamaican and she said she's going to get a dog and when she does he's going to say my mommy seasons my food yeah she's going to let him in the bed she really can't wait when did you last check your
Speaker 2breasts this morning oh this morning yeah I check mine in the shower and I check mine probably once a month once a month which I don't think is too bad um and it and actually this you know doing this chat today made me think should I be doing it more than once a month okay what is normal or what you we should be doing so four weeks I think every four weeks is actually
Speaker 1not too bad great yeah one in seven women will get breast cancer in their lifetime but when it's found early treatment is much more likely to be successful around two-thirds of breast cancers are found by breast checking I didn't know that yeah
Speaker 2well I read that stat as well I was like wow because you're catching early as well if you can which is the best thing
Speaker 1the best thing always early intervention you should check anything new or unusual with a GP your breasts can change for a lot of reasons like the menopause why do they call it the menopause
Speaker 2we just call it menopause it's far more sinister to add like a menopause
Speaker 1guys it's not the menopause um pregnancy and breastfeeding yeah which I've been knocked up like a stray cat for the last five years so my breasts so funny have been though um no I've breastfed so long I have to declare myself as dairy produce when I clear customs it's a real I can't even check I can't reach some can't check oh my gosh yeah but now are you still breastfeeding I stopped last month and I'm such a little how do you feel free okay I prioritized breastfeeding it was a thing for me not for everyone and for me too and I felt sad when I stopped I did feel momentarily sad but not as sad as I thought okay okay it's a new chapter yes absolutely uh you might have more kids I want more that's why I'm asking you that
Speaker 2question that's why I'm asking you I'm desperate for more desperate and because you're sad about
Speaker 1the breastfeedings then you will have yeah okay and because I wasn't sad it means I'm really done okay you're done do you think you're done well I'm geriatric so okay you're done you're done
