recorded outside at a real live fire that's right which we've been dying to do for a long time because what's a campfire story without a fire yeah so here we are jare it's not in the shot for some reason the fire the whole purpose is that it's here but it's not so we're gonna we'll have a shot come up on screen of the fire maybe we'll cut to it yes uh camp creepily eight we have resurrected the hollowed grounds of camp creepily in our good friend john kirk's backyard in houston texas because we are still on the road yes they let us terraform here a bit and uh the deep woods of houston suburbia is where our current deep woods camp creepily episode is being filmed you may hear some trains in the background an occasional street bike or police siren just imagine that those are howling souls uh or enchanted winds of sorts let's hear this howling soul for a second oh staccato soul more of a complaining soul but yes this is our first incarnation of camp creepily eight it'll be interesting to see how the grounds shift and gyrate and when what sort of okay topography comes in the future when we get home it'll be interesting to see uh kind of what takes shape yeah if this if in this episode awesome and arizona mimic infestation all right yeah but two stories very uh similar in location and phenomena that we're gonna kind of corroborate each other so that'll be interesting to talk about cool yeah i've got some uh killer stories too like killers no like really good okay feelings killing killers i knew that's what you mean stories that kill not people cool yeah you want to hear what they are sure i'm at least doing two you tease them i'll just say you're really pulling your weight this episode bringing two stories jeremy i mean i've got more it just depends how much time we have but i've got skateboarders versus ghosts okay at a fishing camp nice detail those are three awesome things put together uh and i've got i'll just call it that for now and let it sit there more broad okay i don't know um but that's a creepy story though yeah great story if we get to that one and then we've got a white lady in a generational cabin uh we have time for that we'll see all right but we got it we got some great stories to get to so let's just get right in there let's dive in let's light that light that fire well the fire is lit we don't have to do it with a fake audio bite right now we actually have it lit and we do have a third seat here tonight so if if our host who is hosting us in his backyard becomes available jeremy it's no longer the backyard this is the hallowed grounds of camp creepily i mean i think the suburbs could be just about the same but i think it's gonna be a little different i think the suburbs could be just a little different i think it's houston texas okay well i like the suburban atmosphere but anyways if you come if he becomes available the seat that you see over here will become filled and we once again become three for the evening so stay tuned what's our first story chris all right um first tale of the evening to wait for the police siren i did warn them that's true that's the spooky atmosphere spooky in another way crime okay so this first account takes place in a very unique place not only is it known as a sacred location but interestingly in recent times this land has been gouged and carved and sort of designed for lack of a better word which will we'll get to the reasons of why after the account terraform terraform yes kind of like we did this backyard cool it all comes full circle land's been ripped up that causes some trauma yes and when these sorts of things happen you have these combination of elements you've got this sacredness uh the ancient sacred land and then the re terraforming of the ground can this bring about or awaken entities can this bring about energies that have lain dormant can this merely but importantly yes call certain types of people to its crevices hmm you mean crevasses crevasses and its crevices uh to perform certain rituals let's say i hope so to maybe draw those very entities out maybe so let's hear this story this comes to us from anonymous we have his name but he prefers it be kept secret this happened in the parallel forest in the witch tom mountains wildlife refuge oklahoma 2016 around 3 a.m this i call the dancing tahine this story dates back to 2016 when i was in high school me and my best friend we'll call mark would frequently go out to the mountains if you could even call him that the wichita mountain wildlife refuge and would just do everything you could imagine drink smoke explore just what your average 16 17 year olds would do doing things that could get you into trouble but away from other people it was nice out there it brought us both a certain bit of peace and we often talked about how the mountains did that it was kind of a surreal feeling out there fast forward just a little it was late into november or december i want to say because it was cold i know that for a fact in this particular friday night after our football game we had decided to go out to the mountains and start a fire and sit out there with our girlfriends we wanted to tell scary stories have some drinks and sit by the fire nothing too crazy on this night we pulled off into a part of the forest that we would frequently visit just because it was so eerie looking. The parallel forest. I also need to add that what we were doing was very illegal and could result in fines and possibly jail time for lighting a fire in the woods. So we started our trek into the forest. Eventually, we found a nice clearing and it looked like someone had actually burned a fire there before. So we went to work on gathering wood, drinking beers, and just trying to have some fun. The girls we were with were not huge on being out there, just because of how dark it was. The forest gave off a weird feeling that night. Either way, about 20 minutes later, we had collected enough dead wood to attempt to start a fire. We set it up and began to lay down the kindling. But just before Mark was going to strike his lighting stick. I happened to look out past the clearing and noticed I could see a light of sorts. I immediately hit the ground and motioned for the other three to do as well. "Oh sh*t," I thought. "This is where we get caught and can never do this again." A few minutes pass and we realize we are looking at another fire, looking to be about another 100 to 200 further yards into the woods. Mark got up and motioned to me. "Let's go see what's out there." So we headed that way as quietly as we could, girls complaining the whole time. As we approached, I could see that they had quite the fire going, a lot bigger than the one we would dare to make. And I could see movement as well. But I couldn't make out what was happening. Mark reached into his backpack to pull out his rangefinder to take a look. As he pulled out his rangefinder to take a look. As soon as he locked on to the fire, he dropped the rangefinder and ran the opposite way we had just come. Not a word said. He just sprinted away as fast as he could. I then picked up the rangefinder to take a look myself. And what I saw still gives me goosebumps to this day. I have them now as I'm typing this. It was three individuals, two males and one female, completely naked. And wearing some kind of, I don't know exactly what was on their heads, some kind of animal head or mask. Some kind of animal head or mask. One of them was for sure wearing this. I'm just not sure if it was a mask or a real animal's head. And they were dancing around the fire. Just spinning. I instantly pulled the rangefinder away and covered my mouth. My girlfriend at the time held her hand out for me to pass over the rangefinder. At this point, I was also panicking. Louder than she should have. Louder than she should have. She keyed in on the fire and screamed. I covered her mouth and took the rangefinder back and looked again. How about the naked people with How about the naked people with Animals on their head. Yeah, so. Animal heads on their head. What did you title this? You titled it The Dancing Taheen. It's a reference to Stephen King. Maybe I should have titled it something else. Yeah. Dark Tower, great book series, but there are these entities, these humanoid sort of people from another world, but they have animal heads, human bodies. That's obviously not this, Stephen King creation. Probably wearing animal heads, which is disturbing enough. So some sort of cult activity. Or masks. Some sort of, yeah. I mean, I think the nakedness takes it to that level, too. I mean, it could be more of a Burning Man situation, I guess, but you're eerie, and we don't know, but it sets the right mood for the fire, I think. And I think what's interesting is this place is really fascinating. The Parallel Forest? The Parallel Forest. So the land itself, as I kind of mentioned earlier, is a really pretty significant place just because of its rich history. The native tribes that inhabited this land, the Comanche, the Kiowa. I'm not sure if I'm saying that right, and the Apache. It was their territory, and they all believed it was very sacred. It had sort of power to it, and the Comanche specifically would use it for dream quests. They would venture out into the forest there and attempt to connect with their spirit guides. Do you know why it was called the Parallel Forest now? Well, the Parallel Forest didn't exist when they were there, but these mountains in this area, this was the territory that was sacred to them. It had this sort of. It had this sort of power to it. But the Parallel Forest is interesting. So, Jeremy, pop quiz. It's my name. 1930s. What terrible catastrophe hit the United States of America in the 1930s? And lasted for about 10 years. We. Time out. Can I research this and then come back? No, I'll give you a hint, though. I'm kidding. Is it the. It's got to be the. I'll give you a hint. You don't have to. You don't have to hint me. Okay. The 1930s, right? There's been movies made about it, right? You watched a documentary about this? The Dust Bowl, the drought. Yeah. The Dust Bowl. Terrible, terrible. I know some stuff. affliction upon the land. You say this is Wyoming? Oklahoma. That's okay. So, no. Western. Yes. So, you were not right, but. Okay. So, the U.S. government had sort of a science experiment here, where they decided to plant a forest of 20,000. Oh, I heard about this. Were these like dust catcher trees? They wanted to stop. Yeah, yeah. a future Dust Bowl kind of happening? Right. So, they planted 20,000 cedar trees, the bane of my existence, I found out, after being in Texas for a couple months. Cedar fever. Yeah. Cedar trees, but in these parallel rows, meticulously six feet apart. So, already you have this sort of eerie geometry when you enter. So, of course, you know, whatever you want to make of the natural and unnatural alignment of the trees or whatever, if that has anything to do with it, or is it just. That's interesting. just the look and the vibe of it, because, you know, you have these rows and rows. And we'll have full pictures here on the screen you guys can see. Tree mancy. Tree mancy. There is something. Interesting about that idea, the idea of planting trees in a geometric pattern, or even just in parallel lines. It's very unnatural. Six feet. I just think of six feet underground. Great song. Six, six, six. Sneaker pimps. That is a good song. It's a great song. But, yeah, I think that aligning trees like that is interesting. I mean, who knows? Yeah. It's just interesting because they do not grow that way. Right. Generally. So, can you create. Is it a tree mancy? Either way. Either way, what are these people doing out there naked and running around? It could be innocent. Well, not so innocent because they're naked, but. It could be fun. It could be malevolent. But either way, they were terrified and ran. So, there's a lot of rumors, and you could argue because of the look of this place, the atmosphere, the aesthetic. Yeah. that a lot might be extrapolated from imagination. There's nothing too paranormal, supernatural in this story, right? It's really just kind of an unexplained, more of a cult-like activity. Right. Potentially cult-like. I mean, it feels sinister. Yeah. It might not have been. Right. There are a lot of rumors of ritual activity. There is an. There's an alleged satanic altar in the middle of the forest. Okay. Well, that adds a little cream to the crop. It's not really a satanic altar. There is a history behind it. It's part of, I think, a mining thing that was left there from centuries past. Okay. But it's in the center of the forest. But it adds to. But since then. We have pictures of it? Well, pictures of it have been shown. But since then, people have found, you know, candle wax, you know. So, people might be using it for. Right. That's the rumor. Okay. Rumors are good. There's also stories of headless ghosts there, other things. I looked for. I looked in the archives, newspaper archives, to see if there has been any documented cases of malevolent sort of ritualistic murder. No. Thankfully. Good. There was one body found there, but it ended up being a robbery committed by two half-brothers, I believe. So, that's all I could find on that specific. Which is a good thing. Yeah. You don't come across. We don't hope for tragedy. Right. Just because they make ghosts. Yeah. This is true. But yeah, I thought it was a good way to start. Yeah. It kind of puts us in the mood for. the of the campfire it's a good opener thank you anonymous yes well fire is getting restless chris what's our next tale well-timed log drop all right so this next story this next story is a mystery of a different nature sort of a benevolent encroachment upon an evening at the campsite this next story involves a mysterious helping hand coming along on what would become a very dark night for our listener and she says strange paranormal happenings have been occurring to her family for generations but this specific story has stuck with them for over 30 years they still talk about it interesting this comes to us from stephanie may and this happened in nevis minnesota a camper's paradise campground in july 1995 and i call this a doctor in the dark every summer mine and four other families went to camper's paradise in nevis minnesota for two weeks it was a campground on an island where he had to drive on a single lane dirt road surrounded by water to get to it wasn't the easiest to get to and pretty remote at that time the picture i submitted shows the small road i am talking about i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when i was three years old and began giving myself injections when i was seven during that summer at camper's paradise when i was seven i accidentally overdosed on my insulin that i always took before bed and i went into diabetic seizures in the middle of the night i have no memory of this but my mother tells me i was screaming in my tent thrashing around and trying to swallow my own tongue she was in the tent trying to help me a gentleman came over and popped his head into the tent and asked if i was diabetic to which my mother responded yes and then she said yes and then she said i was having seizures from an overdose the gentleman said that he heard the commotion because he was staying at the site immediately next to ours he said he was a doctor so he had a cell phone for emergencies and that he would phone an ambulance this was in 1995 so no one in the family or the group of people we camped with had cell phones at that time as they were not common the man told my mother to drive to the end of the single lane road on the mainland with me and the ambulance would meet us there i was able to get to the hospital that night and although i was in a diabetic coma for 15 hours it could have been a lot more severe leading to permanent brain damage or even death in all the commotion my mother did not get a chance to thank the man or speak with him after he told us where to meet the ambulance when we got back to the campground from the hospital the campsite next to us was empty my mom went to the main office to ask jean the campground owner who was staying at our site because she wanted to extend her gratitude and thanks for helping us that night jean told her no one has been there all week this is a fairly small campground with a communal beach bathrooms shower house and laundry room she walked around the island on the road that passed all the campsites numerous times and never found the man that night i can't think of any logical reasoning as to why someone would lie about camping near us in order to help us it was like he never existed to this day my mother believes it was my guardian angel and she is not a very superstitious or religious woman isn't that great yeah it's a nice you want to welcome to camp sweetly wow that was great not too creepy it's nice to have a helping hand in the dark yeah uplifting a tail yeah of the unknown for once why doesn't everybody get that you know a guardian angel guardian or some sort of you know third man out in the woods to help you when you need it you know some people believe everyone has a guardian angel maybe they just don't act all the time maybe there's fate yeah who knows how these things work does everything happen for a reason i don't know that's hard to say there's an interesting detail about this 1995 no one really had cell phones yeah doctors are on call but if you're gonna be on call why are you in the woods camping so yeah great story just a great nice little uh a friendly tale before we get to the darker ones for the evening yeah what was that yes supernatural savior or someone who just disappeared quickly yeah the place looks beautiful too oh yeah what was the name of that place well the or something you can see into the water that sounds beautiful but yeah great place great story is it our way home can we stop there yeah actually weirdly this happens a lot a lot of these places are really on the way home well not the arizona ones unless we take a really wacky route that should be fun if we had time and money to do that we have a tent we do have a tent it's right behind me you can camp on public land and i think arizona nevada definitely a lot of public landing camp on for free yeah let's do it after we hear the arizona stories i don't know how much we're gonna want to be out there camping around these certain territories as long as there's no naked talking's running around yes um or maybe that would be fun you never know they might be party animals party animal human animals um got another creeper oh yeah now we're gonna get into the darker some of the darker tales oh yes let's do ones of mischief ones of deceit ones of entities looking for a trick not a treat what are they doing but this is this is kind of perfect because uh we haven't told the story yet chris you're about to get into yes but we tried to set this up last night for camp creepily and we ran out of time but something happened while we were setting up yeah i don't know what this is but you were like remind me to ask if john's house is haunted i'm sure you don't think it is i'm guessing you've probably never had any experiences just because i feel like i would have heard them uh although you did get an interesting object recently an artifact not that it would be haunted necessarily interesting artifact yeah you showed us oh the bookshelf oh the bookshelf yeah yeah it has some history yeah it has a kind of a not ominous but serendipitous origin story yeah so maybe even supernatural yeah but i bring that up because there are a couple things that happen in your house since i've been here that i was just i it's things move right like i washed a plate put in the thing you were in bed it was late and lights were off and i started walking away and then there was a shifting you know dishes shift how unusual and then footsteps in the laundry room maybe just something creaking but there was nothing running no launch running anyways but the other night last night we set this up loud noise suddenly comes on i'm like okay is a neighbor running a generator because you know suburban houston there's noises we've been dodging all night this was loud i walk over just to investigate see what it is your air compressor was on it kicked on it was on for like 33 seconds and then turned off is that a thing that happens in your garage i really hate to shut this story down but that is a completely normal happening i just wanted to answer is that a homeowner okay yeah i'm glad you didn't try to sell it i'm glad that my house isn't haunted because this whole time i was just thinking like well this is great my best friends came here to shoot their podcast and then i found out there's ghosts in my house and now i can't live here anymore sorry we may have brought a few but yeah that's so that just happens your air compressor just kicks off yes okay yeah whenever they lose go below a certain charge they re automatically i am a real man i knew that apparently i did not know that okay well do we have a creepier story welcome to camp do you want me to give you a different answer no i mean i've never done that in my heart i wanted a creepy answer but i'm glad you told the truth okay i did have a dark dream here last night but yeah i've just had like probably two of the most disturbing dreams i've ever had in my life i've had here at this house really that's the only creepy. I don't know that I would associate that with the house necessarily, but that's the only thing, really. It could just be your own kind of darkness bubbling up. It could be. An evil growing inside you. Back to you, Chris. Anyway, I think these next tales are going to be right up your alley because they are I think what fascinates your daughters most about the stories that we do on the show. These next two tales. She seems to like the mimic. She does. We happen to have had a couple submissions for Camp Creepily involving such phenomena. That's what we're going to be covering for these next two stories. And she will be guest starring in one of the voices. Yes. For one of the stories. Awesome. Appropriately yelling your name, Daddy. Okay, so this next story covers as we said, a topic we've covered a lot on the show which happens at an alarming rate, I feel like. It does. For people and more and more people are coming forward with these accounts, these accounts of hearing someone mimicking a loved one. Someone calling a person's name. And John, as you I think we talked to you briefly about an episode we did recently. The mimic episode involving the luring of children. Which to you I imagine is, you know, a fearful thing considering you have three of them now. But these are the sorts of things that occur in this next tale. This next story comes to us from the Mogion Rim. It's a fascinating place I've never heard of. It's an escarpment. What is an escarpment? I didn't know what it was until I researched this episode. We'll talk about it after the story. Stay tuned to learn about escarpment. Beliefful geography edition. But it is a very liminal place. A very liminal type of geography. This comes to us from Denise Bernard. This I call Night Voices with Mogion Rim. A few years ago we went camping at C.C. Cragen Reservoir north of Payson, Arizona. On the north side of Mogion Rim. The first night was great. S'mores. Campfire stories. I read from scary stories to tell in the dark. Still have the originals. And we were just chilling. We hear coyotes off in the distance, but don't think much of them. The second night got interesting. My boys decided they wanted to try out camping in their own tent, like the older kids. Years of experience had us at a point where we always had a spare tent. So we get the boys set up, both under age 10, in their tents and cots. Everyone else is getting their kids situated, and finally us adults are ready for our nightcap. We drink and watch the fire burn down. The gals do a little cleaning, while the guys put out the smolder and lock everything up. We all say goodnight and head to the sleeping bags. My dogs are not happy. Whimpering, growling under their breath. Hackles up. Just not happy. And at attention towards the tent doors. By this time, all the kids have been to bed for an hour and a half or two. As my husband and I settle in, trying to calm the pups, we hear cans being kicked around. I could have sworn, that the gals and I cleaned up pretty well, and maybe missed one or two, but not enough to make such a racket. The husband checks and sees no one, and nothing out of place, and comes back to bed. The dogs are still not happy. About a half hour later, same thing again. But again, no indication of someone fussing around. Just as I'm dozing off, my kid screams at the top of his lungs. Daddy! We both jump up. He grabs the gun. Says to hold the dogs until he says, and he runs out of the tent. My dogs are going nuts. We're fighting. I'm holding onto their harnesses, and they're jumping at the bit. Two minutes later, my husband is back saying the kids are fast asleep. He woke our oldest, asking if he was okay, and he acted confused. We let one of the dogs in their tent, and kept the other. I swear I didn't sleep, but the next thing I know, it's daylight peeking through the trees, and I'm up. My dog is with me, and we're just making morning rounds. I open the boys' tent to let the other dog out, and the boys are sleeping soundly. My friend and I have a bit where whoever wakes first calls out like an animal. A rooster, a bear, a coyote, a donkey. Whatever animal noise we can make until we both emerge from our tents, it's fun. Anyways, she gets up and starts yelling jokingly about how we kept her up all night with our flashlight and calling to her. She was so annoyed. We gave our story, and my boy finally wakes up and over breakfast tells his side about how we kept bothering him to get up. It was bizarre and kind of frightening, that two people in our party were being called into the woods. Two separated, but near each other's campsites. I'm just so glad my kid called for his dad and didn't give in to the calling. My other son said he heard nothing and slept just fine. Just bizarre. Weird. It's pretty freaky. So two people being lured out on the same evening and connecting campsites in the same area. Different voices mimicked. That would be so freaky. Yeah, it's very disturbing. The next day, waking up, I love that corroboration. Someone else having the same experience from a different point of view. It's always fascinating. I feel like if it happened, if just the one instant happened, you might not think anything of it. It might just be like, I had a weird dream, or maybe I heard something, but someone else has a similar experience. And then it seems like, oh, something really did happen. So not only is it like the dad and the mom go and, you know, grab the gun and go check, the kids are fine, but also then the mother's friend has the same experience, similar experience, but this time it's the adults that are being mimicked trying to draw her out into the forest. Because she didn't go out. No. She was just annoyed. It's her reaction, which is the right reaction to have. I feel like I'd be like, what's going on? And I'd go out. You'd be gone. I'd be gone in the forest. You'd be taken. Yeah. Yeah, that's why you got to use your wits and your common sense. I've got those. Like, for instance, if you guys were asleep in the tent and I really needed you, I would just open the tent. That's true. You would be like, hey, guys. I would be like, hey, guys, come out here. I need help. Right. I would open the tent and be like, hey, guys. That's true. I feel like a mimic needs to be a little more convincing. Yeah. Have like a really good story. Like, hey, guys, I'm stuck. I can't come to the tent. Well, it's interesting you mention that. It's interesting you mention that because the next story has a more involved kind of lure. Oh, really? Yeah. But before we get to that, I just want to mention this is interesting because this area, this escarpment, which, by the way, it seems like an escarpment. I might be wrong about this geologist out there. It seems like it's a giant division. I don't know if it's a continental shelf thing, but like a big elevation separates a certain plateau of land mass to another. Like a cliff. That's this rim. I thought we were going to get like an actual definition. Yeah. Google that. Cool. He's not Wikipedia, Jeremy. That's true. But very little space. So we've covered a lot of liminal spaces in the past and how energies seem to coalesce in stories and phenomena seem to occur in liminal spaces, liminal places. Where things collide or divide. Yeah. Yeah. But interestingly also is that just 30 to 40 miles away is the Navajo Reservation. And what do we know about certain phenomena takes place involving mimicry to deceive in the lore is the skinwalker. Trickster. Yes. The Navajo witch. Yes. Yeah. The darkest. 30 miles away. Witchcraft. Not saying that that was this. Because of course you get this phenomenon all over the world. You know, you have whispering spirits in the Mojave Desert. You've got the. The Leshy. The Leshy. Eastern Europe. But again, these mimicking voices to lure people out. And if you guys heard that episode we did that was pretty disturbing with the wind that we covered. Oh, right. Luring the children out into the natural elements. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, I am at least glad that this one wasn't going after the kids. Yeah. Interesting that it was going after the adults. Yeah. That's a good point. That's a nice change. Although I also wonder, you know, you guys talked a lot about like feeding on fear. Like, is the mimic. Does it just want the fear? Like, does it really want you to come out of the tent? Right. Or does it just want you to lay there and, you know, be tortured all night? Does it just want to feed on that energy of the confusion and sadness and darkness? Yeah. That's the ultimate question. Like, what if you came out of the tent and the mimic. The mimic was like, ah, man, I got to do this all again now. Fear's off the menu, boys. Yeah. That's a good question. And there's obviously cases where it seems a little more. Well, there are. Dark in nature, like the wind story, which was pretty disturbing. Yeah. Yeah. But that's a good question. Defining the. But again, not all these things are the same, you know. Well, yeah. You might have the same. Defining the different kinds of entities. Right. The same, similar lures, but not the same intended result. Yeah. Maybe not death, maybe a feeding of that fear, which is a very. - It's a very real thing. I think that feeding of the fear thing is a very real thing. - Yeah. Yeah, but I don't really actually think that's like the Mimic. I think the Mimic wants you to come out. Yeah. Interesting detail from that story, too. Didn't that guy say, like, suddenly the sun was up, but he didn't fall asleep? Oh, yeah. Yeah, she. I think it was a woman. Oh, it was a woman. Sorry. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, she didn't remember falling asleep. She swore she didn't go to bed, but then she was awake. That's an interesting point, John, because that happens in a lot of these accounts where and that overlaps with Fae stories, E.T. abduction stories, but where, like, it seems like no time has passed. You don't remember going to bed or how you possibly could have fallen asleep in this situation, but then all of a sudden the sun is up and you're awake. Well, that's a major one. When did I fall asleep? That's a major attribute that we hear a lot in a lot of these accounts is, you know, if you see something completely inexplicable, it makes the story sound even harder to believe, especially if you've seen something like a dog man or something like that. And then suddenly you're like, and I don't know why, I have no idea, but I decided it was bedtime. Yeah. And I somehow laid down and went right to sleep. Yeah. It's almost like there is. We talked about this. We talked about this before. We called it a paranormal anesthesia or something like that, where basically. Paranormal paralytic. Yeah. But it's an anesthetic. Yeah. It's something, it's like a mosquito. It has this sort of ability to just, your brain almost breaks your brain to the point where you're like, well, I'm tired now. Yeah. And I don't know what else to do. So I go into just like neither fight or flight. Or it's like a self-preservation thing. Yeah. Where your psyche is like, okay, time to shut down for a while. You're like one of those poor, one of those goats that like gets scared of anything. The fainting goats? Oh, yeah. Yeah. It doesn't seem like the best defense mechanism, but I guess it works for them. Might be for your psyche though. That's true. It might just protect your actual psychology. Yeah. Well, it's the same thing with screen memory. It's like there's two possible explanations. Right. One is like, is it, you know, in case of alien abductions, is a screen memory put in there in your mind to make you think that that was an owl and not some sort of gray alien? Or is it just your mind replacing a terrifying traumatic experience with something that is not so bad so you can just operate day to day? Yeah. Yeah. Interesting point. Anyway, we have a very related story that happened to come in around the same time. Very, very similar account. In the same, relatively same area, same state anyway, Arizona. If you're ready for that. This one's a little more involved in the lureship. Lureship? Yes. Lureship. Yes. Luridity. Yes. Do we need another log on the old fire then? Yeah. John, for this tale, will you throw another log in the fire? Will I what? Throw another log in the fire. Yes, I will. All right. I'd love to. It was his idea. Well, do it. Fire is on. Fire is rock. Fire is on. Hey, man, it's so great to have an actual campfire for Camp Great Play. Yeah. Yeah. First time, man. Thank you for making this happen. You're welcome. All right. This next story, as I said, very similar in tone, similar in phenomena, a little more devious. This happened near Black Rock Mine in Arizona. This comes from Sam and I call this Mimic on the Land. I've tried to record this several times, but I freak myself out talking about it and talk in circles. So hopefully this goes better. My husband is a cattle rancher. We live in Southern Utah, and this was our second year with this Arizona permit. My at-the-time three-year-old and our dogs loved to go with him to check on the cows. We had the worst luck with our water lines, and by this time, we had spent hours trying not to have to hike the lines through the cactus and the mesquite, but we had gotten to a point that we didn't have another option. On this day, my husband took off walking down the line with his dog, Poppy, while I kept the kiddo entertained, chasing lizards, looking for cool rocks and fossils. The plan was for us to go with him. The plan was to go pick him up at the next trough in the side-by-side in about an hour. About 45 minutes after he left, we started heading toward the side-by-side in cell service to head his way, when a bush rattled. I figured it was a rabbit and didn't think much of it. The two dogs that had stayed with us started growling at the bush. Arr, arr. These dogs have chased bears, killed coyotes, treated a lion, and literally chased bulls for a living. They aren't scared of things. They were acting scared, hackled, barking, but refusing to be more than a foot away from the kiddo and me. As soon as they started barking, I hear my husband yelling from the bottom of the riverbed. Sammy! Poppy fell! I need help! Right now! I need help! I need help! I know he said more, but by the time that sentence got out, I knew there was something wrong. Again, these dogs know my husband. They work with him every day, and they wanted absolutely nothing to do with my husband's voice. I reach for my gun. My kid is trying to drag me toward Daddy because he needs help. I'm freaking out. The dogs are freaking out. I started backing toward the side-by-side. At this point, we were probably only 10 yards from it, thankfully. The voice is still begging for me to come and help with Poppy. When at that moment, I get a text message. It's my husband, saying he's three miles away at the next water trough, and he's texting me to tell me that he made it there. I got everyone loaded into the side-by-side, and we took off to the next water trough. We took off to the next water trough, and we took off to the next water trough, and we took off to the next water trough, and we took off down the road as fast as we could. After a few weeks of trying to convince myself that it didn't actually happen, I found your podcast, and was relieved to know that I am not the only one who has had some sort of encounter like this. Thank you for giving us a place to share our stories, where we don't just get written off. Yeah, man, it's such a strange thing to happen. I can imagine why you wouldn't want to tell people about it. Yeah, that's a disturbing story. The mimic was going after the kid in that one, right? Yeah, the kid and the mom. Yeah, interesting. Pretending to be the father, saying that his dogs hurt. Do you think she would have gone if the dogs wouldn't have been there? It seems like the dog saved the day. I think she might have gone even though the dogs were barking, but had she not got that text message? Finding out that he was three miles away at a different trough. Yeah, so maybe after the fact. But again, the dogs. That's a great point, John, because the dogs, if you remember the last story, the dogs were barking at the tent. Oh, yeah. Barking at the tent. At whatever was yelling. So they were signaling they knew what was going on. They knew there was something off. Something was amiss. Yeah, which is a common thing with animals. Didn't she say something seemed suspicious about his voice? Oh, she was suspicious that the dogs didn't respond to the voice. Right. Yeah. That was really interesting. I like that she was cued into something there, too. Exactly, yeah. That they were reacting in the opposite way. You think that the dogs owned by this man would be reacting in this situation. That an owner needs help. Yeah, that's so unsettling. And unsettling that, because they were supposed to meet at a trough further down. Yeah. But instead, they stopped at this one where they heard the call. Yeah. Which is unsettling because it almost sounds like the mimic or whatever this thing was knew that they were supposed to meet up at a trough. Yeah, that's a good point. But it was one before they were actually supposed to get to. An interruption. An interruption. An interruption and a potential snagging. Yeah. Yeah, that's the official term. Supernatural snagging. Yeah. No, but, I mean, again, it blows my mind about these stories is how frequently they seem to occur. Yeah. I mean, yeah, we did the whole mimics episode and then after that we had a deluge of mimic stories. Yeah. I was looking through all of our list of stories and trying to cross-correlate the different mimic accounts. We have enough for a couple episodes. Yeah, and if anybody hasn't seen or heard our Disembodied Voices episode, we covered that fantastic book by Tim Marzenko. I don't know if you ever heard this one, John, but this author, Tim Marzenko, he had an experience when he was a young boy. So creepy. He heard the voice, I believe it was his father, calling his name into the forest. And he said the voice was. Almost mechanical. Almost mechanical. Oh, I remember. Have you shared that on the podcast before? I remember that story. We covered that case and we covered his book. Almost like a recording on playback. And he spent, I don't know how many years, at least a decade, looking into this phenomena and finding accounts all over the world where these disembodied voices, as he calls them, or mimicry or whatever, And I think in, you know, contemporary pop culture, it's become sort of a thing, but there are these cases of mimicking voices that lure people out into dangerous situations for whatever purposes. Yeah, I think the climax. That's a real phenomenon. I think the climax of the book was when he found the Leshy. Right. That's kind of where he landed on the potential explanation, which is. Or at least an identification. I think it was Slavic folklore, but it, but it just matched so perfectly to what, and I. Some ancient identification of what this thing has been all this time. Right. Just under different names. Yeah. I mean, but again, Skinwalker, Djinn, you know, whatever, different regions have different explanations for these things. Yeah. Either way, it's unsettling. Yeah. They do seem to be very opportunistic, right? Yeah. Like Jeremy said, like this one knew, apparently knew that she was going to a water trough. So it went, it was at one. Exactly. It was like, Hey, I need help. Yeah. It's an eerie detail. Like all, all the, you know, it had, it had the checklist. Yeah. And it knew the name. Of the. Yeah. The dog. The dog. And the kid. And the dog. And the kid. And the kid. Was it the kid's name? The dog's name. Okay. Poppy. Okay. Poppy needs help. Poppy fell. But the dog, so that dog wasn't with him at the time. No. The dad took that dog with him. Oh. The dad's like, that's his like go-to pup. Okay. Yeah. Go-to pup. Go-to pup. Go-to pup. Everyone needs a go-to pup. GTP. That's right. GTP. Terrifying. I'm glad you guys didn't heed the call. Yeah. And thank you for sharing that story. Someone's voice in the woods. Just be a little thorough. Trepidatious. Yes. Perhaps. Yeah. I mean, just a terrifying proposition. Yeah. Yeah. Things are out there. We'll get you, dog. This next one. Short but sweet. Interesting account. Down under. Oh. Again, it's a disembodied voice. But this one. That's Australia. Yeah. That's Australia. Park of the Undie? Yes. Okay. Uh-huh. The land of Paul Hogan. This comes from him. From Paul Hogan? Yes. Wait, Paul Hogan? Yeah. Paul Hogan. Yeah. But this story is nice because there's no luring involved. It's just a curious, short little tale. Short and sweet. And this happened. I'll get this wrong. Wilpen a pound. Flinders Ranges, South Australia, about 45 years ago. And this happened to our listener, Kristen Kay, when she was about eight years old. This is called A Land Spirit's Whisper. When I was about eight years old, my family and I were camping in our caravan at Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges, South Australia. It had been a busy day, and I was trying to go to sleep. I had closed my eyes when suddenly I heard a childlike voice speaking in a language I could not understand. I instantly felt it was a spirit. And being young, I was terrified. I opened my eyes immediately, but the voice stopped. So I closed my eyes again, and the voice started to speak straight away. I opened my eyes again fearfully, and the voice stopped. This went on for some time, and I must have fallen asleep from exhaustion, as we had been climbing the smallish mountain and hiking most of the day. I truly believe this was the spirit of an indigenous tribe. A child, or a spirit connected with the land. Yeah, nice short, little sweet tale. Well, I don't know if it's sweet. Yeah, it's creepy. It's creepy for sure. But there was no luring, there was no. What did he say? Or she, we don't know. Just a voice speaking. What did the child say? You wonder if something like that is like a. What's the word for this? Like a stone tape? Yeah, stone tape theory. Right, if it's just like. Some kind of echo of the past that's coming through. Great thought, John. My thought is. Thank you, Chris. About this story. Great thought, but mine is better. Well, no, no. Here goes mine. I don't have a specific thought, other than when it comes to the stone tape, that's usually. Doesn't interact with the person, right? But if you notice in this account, the voice only speaks while her eyes are open. Every time she closes her eyes, it stops. Hmm. Which is eerie. But which seems to indicate that whatever this entity or voice, disembodied voice is, understanding of its environment, and his understanding of this young girl, this eight-year-old girl in her caravan. Weird. In her van, sleeping, or trying to sleep. And then every time it closes its eyes, the voice stops. Opens the eyes, the voice begins. It's very unique. So either the spirit or the thing is shy, and just. Or maybe it just doesn't want to waste its breath. Or it's possible that she is experiencing some sort of hypnagogic opening. You know, that state. That's possible. The state between. Have you experienced that, where you're like, you're not asleep, you're not dreaming? Yeah, weird place to be. Have you ever. So, like, I regularly will see faces in scenes, and sometimes. Faces you've never seen before. Yeah. And a lot of times they're hideous, and it feels like there's. And I'm very skeptical about my own experiences, but it seems like these are things maybe that. Well, same with voices. Voices come in, too. But maybe that they are things just outside this little skin of reality, and they're just, hey, I'm here. Now that I know you're in this state, I will present myself, which is a creepy thought. Yeah. Now you're open to me. Yeah. But the voices, I've definitely heard my name in this state regularly. I've heard random phrases at times. Is it just like when your conscious is slipping to unconscious, your mind is open in some way to something, to the veil slipping? Well, what's interesting about that thought and about this story is that this person happened to be on Aboriginal. And the voice that they hear is a language they don't understand, which may be Aboriginal. It could be one of those languages. Yeah. So maybe this young child, in and out of sleep, maybe, but opening herself up to something that is in there in that same moment, just on the other side of that membrane of reality, so can hear that but can't understand it because not familiar with that language. What do they call that down under? Is it dream time? Yeah. I'm not sure exactly what dream time is. I've looked into this many times. That's kind of a supernatural, shamanic. It's a part of their mythology, faith? I don't know. Aboriginal spirituality? Yeah. Some kind. The dream time. But it works very well in talking about hypnagogia. Yeah. Interesting. Yeah. Thank you for submitting that itty-bitty account. Yeah, it's a fun one. Yeah. Nice. It kind of lightens the mood after. Yes. Just some of the. Two kind of nefarious accounts. Right. Of people stealing, potentially. Yeah. Deceivous nature. Attempted people theft. Well, do you have any, Jer? Because I have. I got those other two. I don't know if you wanted to do. Yeah. Well, how many have we done so far? John, how much time you got? One more tale? I would like to be in bed in 12 minutes. Okay. One more story for John. Okay. All right. Do you have another quickie? Do your skateboarder guy. Okay. Set it up good, though. All right. Better set it up good. Set it up real good. Yeah. Nice and tight. Okay. This is a great, great little story from a fellow named Zach. So he goes fishing with his dad. Or he did. This is a great time of life, too. 13 years old, with your friends. Maybe you're not super into fishing, but you go out in the summers. You go to this really interesting place called Dulac, Louisiana. Thick with water. Watery marshland. You have all these old encampments of fishing. They're called fishing camps, but they're essentially like houses, camps. Like shanties. Yeah, like raised above the water. And in this place, there are hundreds of these kind of camps. But when he goes, there's only like three or four. That are ever really occupied. And he talks about it in the story. So it's kind of an eerie atmosphere. A unique atmosphere. A lot of abandoned sort of domiciles. Yeah. So this is a great kind of coming-of-age ghost story. I guess you could say. I titled this very creatively. Skater Ghost at the Fishing Camp. Nice. A lot of thought into that one. He was the skater ghost. I said, see you later, ghost. Wow. That wasn't good enough for him. Busted makes me feel good. Oh, ghostbusters. All right, ready? Punch it. So me and my friends were probably 13 or 14. Our fishing camp was newer than the others in Dulac. It was a trailer up on stilts. We were on the marsh side of the levee. So all the camps had to be on stilts because of the flooding. Especially during hurricane season. I've fished out of that camp since age five till now. And I'm 35. Around age 13. I'd always want to bring friends along. And of course, we were more into playing 64 and skateboarding than fishing. A normal fishing trip would be a weekend thing. Fishing out of Dulac, you'd be in the marsh and go out and fish in the Gulf of Mexico. Last Island, Rock Island, and the oil rigs. Driving through the marsh, the 18 miles to the Gulf, there's half-submerged sunken shrimp boats and dilapidated camps. Only accessible by boat. by boat. that were established as early as the early 1900s. There's also an alleged haunted camp in the marsh, the 3B camp. My dad said it was the schoolhouse for the families that lived year-round out there back in the day. It's definitely creepy vibes out there, surrounded by oak trees and cypress knees and hanging Spanish moss, and the fact that Dulac is pretty much always empty. Out of hundreds of other camps, rarely are there ever more than four or five others with fishers at them, so you're just out there surrounded by a bunch of old empty camps on stilts, many beat up badly from hurricanes. This particular night, it was around 3 in the morning, me and my two friends were skateboarding by my dad's fishing camp. I had just ollied a gap and skated out from beneath the camp where my friends and I had been standing. When I turned. I turned around, my friends were still there, but standing on the ridge just above them was the silhouette of a man. He was wearing a rain slicker and a slicker hat, but his body was somehow blacker than the night around him. Even in spite of the nearby streetlights, I pointed and my friends darted out toward me. And without saying a word, we jumped on our skateboards and skated the quarter-mile back to the camp. When we got into my room, I said, "What the heck was that?" Right then, the closet door slammed. It went from being all the way open to an aggressively slammed shut. We jumped out of our skin. To this day, I still don't know what that was, but it was the only real paranormal encounter. It was the only real paranormal encounter I've ever had. Since listening to your show, I reached out to the buddy that was there, that's still with us, and asked if he remembered the ghost at the fishing camp. He remembers it just as clearly as I do. Thank you, Zach. Weird. I want to know what that ghost story was. Oh, the 3B camp? No, the Phantom. What was his story? Imagine it from his perspective. He's a phantom on a hill, sees some kids, skateboarding. Getting up to no good, all-in gaps. We don't know what happened to this ghost, or what happened to this person, if it was in fact a ghost. Right. He's just, first of all, blacker than black, blacker than the night. You hear this all the time. Like a vacuum of light. Right. They see this guy up on the hill, freak out, run home. Again, other paranormal experience, door slammed shut out of nowhere. That's the thing, because you could chalk these things up as to coincidences, right? It could be just a random guy. He's very dark for some reason. Darker than the night. Darker than the night, which is, it's a very common hat, man. Yeah, shadow person. Right, so that's going to be an interesting cue. You'd be like, okay, maybe there was a guy that just was eerily painted in black. Trick of the eyes, trick of the light. Yeah. But then the follow-up, you're in a room that you're very familiar with, and a door inexplicably slams shut. Yeah, after you bring him up. And there's that sense of dread when something like that happens. Yeah. You just want to know what, if in fact it was a ghost, what was his story? The rain slicker, the "I know what you did last summer" spook. Mm-hmm. What was his account, like, had he been, this is the sad thing. This is the sad thought in my mind. Bring it down, Chris. In a place where you've got a lot of fishing shanties that aren't being occupied, and you've got these kids who are skateboarding. And how long is this guy just waiting around to interact with someone? Making his presence known, whatever energy that takes, forms himself and avoid, the shape of a guy in a rain slicker, fishing slicker, whatever. And then they flee out of terror, as you would. First of all, disheartening if you were a spirit. They run away, maybe you want someone to communicate with, "Help me." And then you're giving him the best benefit of the doubt. You follow them back to their home, and you slam the door, "Pay attention." 'Cause you're frustrated that they didn't, like, hang around. Right. It just reminds me of so many accounts where it's like, it sounds like there might be somebody trying to reach out. But what can any average person do? Yeah. Yeah, I guess that's true. They didn't say that there was any sense of real dread. Right. Other than like, well, I guess it freaked them out enough. Yeah, they just got spooked and ran away. They got spooked, yeah, but maybe— Was this just some spirit lost on the road of the forever? Stuck between, hasn't yet moved on. Yeah, it's possible, if not a fear eater. These are the things I don't want to become. I'm going to toss in a parent's perspective. Oh, here we go. You know? Rub it in, John. Maybe, maybe this ghost was a parent whose child was severely injured skateboarding. All I got. And so now he or she hangs out here and just scares kids away to prevent them from skateboarding. It is such like a great Scooby-Doo, like— These darn kids always skateboarding. I guess not Scooby-Doo. This is a great like, what's the word? Aesop's fable or a lesson, a lesson sort of spiritual ghost story tale. Like, yeah, was it warning? Yeah. Maybe, I mean, from a positive perspective, maybe one of them was going to get injured. Oh. And so this spirit just got them out of there because it knew that was going to happen. Yes. And then it scared them further to be like, stay inside. Yeah, go to bed. Don't come out tonight. It's actually a fantastic connection because we, you probably didn't hear this episode, but we did an episode. One of my favorite stories came from Hansi Dreschel. What was his name? California skateboarder guy. Oh, such a great story. But his story was about, I don't know if it was him who was skating down this. Yeah, it was him. He was. Was it he that was skating down this? Anyway, he was skating down this crazy street in San Francisco, I think. And, oh man, I wish I could remember the stories. Maybe we'll drop it in. But the story was basically, he was headed towards an intersection when this figure came out of nowhere. He timed the lights. He always timed the lights. That's right. So it would be green for when he was going down. There wouldn't be a car coming through, obviously. For whatever reason, he looks over at this, right as he's about to hit this next green light, and there is a homeless guy who's covered in blood just standing there. And it freaks him out. And I don't know if he falls, he stops, somehow stops right before the light, the green light. Car runs the red light. Yeah, would have smashed him. Would have smashed him and would have bloodied him up. Looks back, no one's there. Another skater warning. But just a weird time, because talking about helpful spirits stopping a skater, it's weird that you brought that concept up, because that's exactly the situation of that story, where it was, in fact, a helpful spirit stopping someone from skating. Yeah, that's bizarre. Don't skate, kids. That's my takeaway. We've already had one Tony Hawk. We don't need another. Yeah. You know? One and done. It's funny, because I did watch, just reminds me of this funny anecdote. We were at Memorial Park, which is here in Houston, which is an awesome park if you're around. And there was this very attractive couple skating, and they're like Instagram clothes, very tall. Instagram clothes. Athletic couple. And they're skating, and their child's behind them, and they're not really paying attention to the skater. The child is in, like, a skirt. She's probably, like, maybe, like, six years old. They're not looking at her. They're, like, you know, holding their phone up or whatever. They're, like, roller skating. We're driving by, and we watch this poor girl just, like, totally face plant onto the concrete. No, like, knee pads, no, like, anything, because that doesn't look as cute. So I'm assuming that's why the kid wasn't wearing it. I don't want to be cynical, but it was a little bit of a moment of, like, where was their ghost? Where was their ghost? Their parent better ghost, you know? It's better than his parents, yeah. Well, we all have had, like, similar stories, right, where, like, something kind of random happens to you. And then later in the day, something maybe fortuitous happens. And you're like, oh, man, that wouldn't have happened. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Had this one random event. So, like, I always think about that. If something random happens that, like, slows me down in the morning or in the midday. Maybe there's a reason. Is there an inevitability that I avoided somehow? Yes. Because sometimes it pays off, and you see, like, oh, man, this only happened because of that. Sometimes you just don't know. Exactly. Like, how many things do you miss? How many cataclysms do you avoid and not even know? Yeah, just on a razor's edge. So, going back to our guardian angel story, like, how many guardian angel, quote, unquote, experiences does everybody have and don't even know? You don't even know. That they occur because you were saved. Exactly. Yeah. Good thought, John. That's what I'm choosing. I'm choosing the positive on this one. Yeah, I like this. Every time you're in a traffic jam, just think to yourself, I could be going faster. Yeah. And that could be the end of me. Yes, right? Or something because of some, yeah, unfortunate, fortuitous event. Maybe it was fortuitous in a good way. Turn it into a positive, you know? Yeah. It's a good way to live life. Yeah. I'll tell the story real quick. Talking about guardian angels. My dad- That was great, yeah. My grandma, my dad's mom, had a dream or nightmare, whatever you want to call it, where my dad, he got into a car accident. My dad, you know, he's 82 now, so when he was driving for the first time, they didn't have seat belts. It wasn't a thing. And- They weren't- They weren't- They weren't required. They weren't required. Thanks, Ralph Nader. She dreamt that he got into this terrible accident, but right before the accident happened, a giant winged angel came down and laid upon the car and stopped the car from smashing into my dad or whatever. So my grandpa went out and made dad put these, you know- Grandpa installed the seat belt in his car. Yeah, which at that time, no one really did. Yeah. And then the next day, dad gets into a bad accident. And he had the seat belt. Oh, amazing. Saved his life. So just those little things, you know, whether it's in like waking life, where we're just have these moments of rescue or preventative rescue or whether it's dream form like these things do happen i do think they are real do you guys know the story of my little sister and the guardian angel no bethany we were on vacation in washington dc i was probably like 10 which means that bethany would have been like six yeah so it's my mom and my older sister me and my little sister bethany and we were walking somewhere in dc and all of a sudden we couldn't find bethany like she she was gone terrifying and we're just you know out in the middle of the day in public people everywhere i'm 10 and rachel is probably 15 16. so like my mom goes to look for her and then rachel and i stay together and we say like we'll meet back here in five minutes or whatever so we come back we haven't found bethany and then this man just comes up with bethany he's like oh is this your daughter we of course it is it's bethany and so i don't really remember this very clearly my mom and older sister remember it much more clearly like i remember bethany being lost i remember a man bringing her back but no no details but my mom turns to like thank the guy and he's gone oh man wow no trace of it yeah which is weird because you would think if you you want your reward yeah if you want your reward you want your five dollars plus how fast is that happened yeah you think he'd be around no that is weird and then bethany from her perspective you know kind of like the mimics like sometimes people know something's fishy they don't trust it yeah bethany like knew from a young age right you don't you don't talk to strangers yeah you don't go with someone but she says she she remembers that she could like trust this guy oh wow that's interesting like he was trustworthy yeah but no one remembers what he looks like wow really i think maybe he was wearing like a brown coat is the only feature you have to ask my mom man but just a crazy story yeah so many incredible stories like that this is an episode we we've never done but we've got requests for it my mom especially requesting it there's so many cases like that like i think true guardian angel or whatever you want to call them but like somebody that intervenes in a moment yeah there's a really really cool account that i want to do for an episode when we cover that but i watched it on a classic episode of sightings oh yeah tim white tim white r.i.p what a show and uh but very briefly it was basically this little girl had gone missing and she was abducted and the guy who abducted her left her in the desert and this is like oh yeah arizona desert and how the winter freezing temperatures at night she was in the desert for three days and three nights oh man noah knew where she was and then eventually a hunter is out there or whatever and sees this little girl just standing there and she just approaches him and he's like you don't belong here alone in the desert so he takes her back whatever but the crazy thing about the story is first of all surviving alone without water or food for three days yeah all that she says she remembers is playing with a a blonde girl of course there was no girl there but she kept her like morale up and somehow like a year or two later her mother has another daughter and then as she grows up she's like i remember her she looks just like her that's crazy this was her the girl that wasn't there but was there like pre-birth that's wild angel kind of story just the stories like that are insane yeah go faster houston texas coming in hot on a monday night campfire stories under the flight path almost there 30 seconds all right yeah those stories like the the guardian angel type stories those things we have not covered much on the show i mean we did third man yeah third man factor but these very intimate accounts you know like your sister's account and like dad's account and there are others we have in our family that we could talk about but we've had so many submissions on this we've been kind of saving up for this and i do have a really good book on this on these experiences with some celebrities which is always fun uh so we'll do that account but uh john i know you have to go inside and tend to your your flock uh your children i have to go to sleep so i can tend to them in the indigenous lore and belief that we frequently come across on the show and find supremely compelling. So let us know what you guys think. This comes from Carrie, and this took place in Kettlepoint, Ontario. I call this story Wolves Aflame. Hi, my name is Carrie. I come from Ontario, Canada, born and raised here. Back when I was in high school, I made some pretty good friends who were indigenous, and that led me to meeting a guy I dated for a while. Eventually, I went to his grandma's place where he lived in Kettlepoint, which is a reserve just a little over a half an hour from where I live. Anyway, there were a few different things that I saw and heard while I was there over the years. So one night, my mom dropped me off in Kettlepoint. When I arrived, some friends had a fire going, and later that night, just about everyone was drinking and having a good time. I'm pretty sure they were smoking weed, too. I decided to stay sober that night and not have a drink. After everything had wound down and no one else was around, me and the guy I was seeing were sitting on the side porch of the house. The bonfire had gone out, and all that was left for light was the streetlight at the end of the driveway. We sat there for a while, and then I saw a man who was sitting on the side porch of the house. He was sitting there for a bit and didn't talk very much. At some point, I just stared at the smoke coming from the fire pit. Everything went silent. I didn't hear any chirping crickets or anything. It was dead silent. It was almost like when someone zones out or goes into a trance and you hear nothing. That's when the smoke started to take the shape of a wall. It jumped out and ran off, and as it did, it faded away. Then another came out behind it. This kept happening for what felt like a few minutes, one after the other. Then it changed. Instead of one at a time, a continuous group started forming and jumping out together, still running off and fading away. I don't know how long it went on for, but when it stopped, I looked at the guy I was seeing and asked him if he saw what had just happened. He looked at me with a questioning look, so I said, you didn't see the wolves jumping out of the fire? He said no. The next day, I talked to his grandma about it to see if she knew what it meant. She told me that she had a book that would have been able to give me some answers, but that book went missing. I never really got any definite answers about why it happened. I even looked it up online to see if anyone else had experienced something similar. I never found anything. Three years later, I had a baby boy, and I sometimes wonder if it had something to do with that, because wolves are very family-oriented animals. Thank you, Kerry. Yeah, fascinating. Yeah. Smoke, wolves from the fire. Yeah, I love that story. This isn't something I've heard about, I mean, in particular. Smoke wolves? Yeah, smoke, wolves from the fire. Is this something you've come across in your research about this account? Specifically smoke wolves, no. Or smoke? Well, so it's interesting because this takes place in, well, it's called Kettle Point. Yeah. It's a community of the Chippewa of Kettle and Stony Point, First Nations. These are the Anishinaabe people. And what's interesting about her specific account, as much as I could look up from the indigenous lore and the beliefs, and we have a lot of native listeners from different areas, so feel free to chime in and kind of give us any insight that you guys have. But the wolf is an interesting character, because the wolf is the first teacher of humankind. Specifically this tribe's beliefs? Well, the Anishinaabe people, it's a cultural kind of group, that includes the Ojibwe, Dawa, Potawatomi, if I'm pronouncing that correctly. But they share, like, cultural beliefs and traditions. And yeah, the wolf is the teacher, brother kind of figure, a sign of, like, family connection, which is really interesting considering the story. Yeah. And then, of course, the fire. Fire is, like, a very sacred idea, from what I understand, that connects this realm and the next. A communication with the divine or the other side, which is obviously a perfect. analogy for what might be happening in the story. Yeah, what's interesting about this is that the broader Chippewa lore, I guess, is the idea of the Oshkiken, if I'm pronouncing that correctly, which is defined as a mechanism that makes things new, which kind of is interesting in relation to her having a child. Oh, yeah. What's also interesting about this is that the Anishinaabe, from what I understand, although there's not, like, a single smoke spirit entity, smoke can be viewed as a sort of living messenger, bridging the gaps from physical and the spirit realm. Yeah, what I read also was that fire itself is seen as a living entity, connecting this world to the next. It's a form of communication with the spirit world. I don't know what Carrie experienced, but it is interesting. What's interesting, it seemed to only be, if it was a message, it was only delivered to her, right? Yeah. Because the guy she was with didn't see this. Yeah, it's also unfortunate that, I mean, it's fascinating that there was a book. A lot of these interpretations, but tragic that that book was lost. Yeah. And the grandmother, who the book misplaced or stolen, removed somehow, for whatever reason. I hate that idea. That's a bummer. Of lost knowledge. Yeah. It reminds me of the Library of Alexandria, and, like, all that ancient knowledge and different traditions and belief systems that have just, you know, this is a small example, but. Right, well, think of how many cultures with fascinating, I hate to use the word mythology, fascinating beliefs, potentially very real observations. Observations, experiences, that are, you know, I think so many that are passed down through spoken word and never written down. And then through time, you know, tragedy befalls communities, cultures, and then we just, this just lost to the winds of time. How many incredible stories. I don't know if you guys remember, but we did an episode on Ji Yun. Oh, yeah. He was like, um. The Fox Mulder of Imperial China. Yeah. Of like, I think, 1700s, 1800s China. Like, it was. It was pre-Westernization, I guess you could say. It was, there was a big upheaval in the social structure at the time, and he was ousted and had to wander. He worked for the emperor as kind of the librarian. Yeah. Had all this, all the work he was doing, all of his knowledge, and then he was sent away, basically to avoid, I think, death. Good thing to avoid. It allowed him to kind of live on the outskirts, but also record as a librarian the stories of the common folk, as it were. The common folk, they're ghost stories. They're stories of the strange and unusual, and created this fantastic tome. Yeah, fascinating stuff about spirit travel, about highways of spirits, about. Entities. Interactions with people on the roadsides. Stuff that I'm really fascinated with. Things that would have been lost were it not for this turn of fate that we've discussed, I guess, all night here in different ways. Ji Yun. But yeah, fascinating stories. We'll link that episode in the show notes, because that was really, really interesting. But yeah, stories like this. Like, what else was lost in that book that the grandmother lost? Or had stolen, or whatever happened to it. Regardless, that was a fascinating little account from Carrie.
