3 Things That Separate 7-Figure Contractors From Everyone Else | Contractor Secrets

In this episode of the Contractor Secrets Podcast, host Tanner shares three success principles he has observed from coaching over 400 business owners. First, breakthrough leaders ask questions relentlessly. They recognize what they don't know and seek knowledge from podcasts, books, and groups, understanding that others have already solved their problems—like inventing the airplane—so they can copy and improve upon existing solutions. Second, they take action with urgency and courage. This means investing money, time, or resources despite the risk, shifting from a worker mindset to an investor mindset. For example, they might pay for marketing or coaching instead of doing everything themselves, recognizing that this accelerates growth. Third, they embrace consistent improvement, waking up early and focusing on personal development to lead effectively. Tanner emphasizes that business owners must be humble enough to learn and bold enough to act, as their decisions impact families and teams. He urges listeners to define clear goals, seek knowledge, and take persistent action with faith, warning against ego and short-term distractions. Ultimately, success comes from a relentless pursuit of greatness, resourcefulness, and a commitment to making a positive impact rather than just chasing material rewards.

What's up guys welcome back to the Contractor Secrets Podcast my name is Tanner and I'm here to share with you Success principles of individuals that break through the norm and achieve success in their business and life now I have a unique perspective. I've had the opportunity to coast personally over 400 business owners and through that I've had the ability to Identify some patterns that really stand out amongst those that actually get what they want and those that are Stuck in the norm and it's pretty easy to identify so I'm gonna go through those with you But before I do make sure you check out the 31 days of value on Amazon This book was actually born from this podcast whether it's you using it on Kindle or grabbing yourself a hard copy This book is guaranteed to give you the success principles that I've personally used in my house painting business and even in my other Business endeavors, you know the success principles are there for you to grab and of course You know I will say you know leaders are readers and it's important for you to identify that what you're doing Chances are has already been done and I use this analogy. I've used it before but you know The plane has already been invented and there's someone somewhere Trying to invent a plane and not looking up and saying oh, you know what? Somebody already did this let me look at what they did Copy it and just make it better. Okay, and that's kind of what we want to do in our home service business So with that said number one is they ask questions right the leaders who actually break through they go from what they Don't know to what they now know and this is the first step to actually Learning is really just recognize what you don't know and you do that through asking questions and you know They're actually pretty persistent and they don't care what you think about it They just want to get the information they absorb information they listen to the podcast they read the books They get into the groups and start hammering out questions. Well what marketing channel are you using who are you hiring to do this? How do I hire what's the proper way to do this? How do I do this and the reason they're asking the questions is because people like me and all the other people that have Seen success want to give back and they get answers. Okay, so this is the beautiful part of connecting online I remember when I first started my house painting business. I had my first exterior house painting job I had no clue how to estimate it I remember googling because there was no 250,000 member Facebook group that I could instantly just ask a question on there wasn't a group chat and Facebook messenger of You know multi-million dollar house painting business owners that are you know that are in a mastermind together Okay, this was me and Google trying to figure out the best way actually me Google and Eric Barstow I think that was his YouTube channel that I that I saw that helped me out there But you know the reality is is that they ask questions they seek information they seek knowledge And ultimately they're not afraid to ask the question. So that's number one if you can't get beyond the ego of I got it I figured out myself you're gonna be stuck and you know ultimately it's a matter of Understanding that in order to create change which is what we're trying to do is change our thinking our behaviors our Decisions our actions and ultimately those will lead to better results We need to understand that we got to learn what we don't know We got to know what we don't know because knowing is the first step to change Number two, this is a big one This one I believe is the the key indicator of someone that's gonna make it okay It's someone's gonna crash through the seven figure threshold someone that's gonna not only get through the seven figure threshold But boom propel themselves beyond seven figures and create a lifestyle that only the Select one percent get an opportunity to create and I'll tell you what that is right now They take action relentlessly, okay now I've sat in on 400 business breakters you can listen to every single one of them on this podcast and again Only a handful of them break through beyond seven figures and Generally speaking the advice I give has to do with one of four categories It's gonna be sales marketing. It's gonna be administration or it's gonna be production and people management in that area and It's a lot right? It's a lot to create that balance between those four departments and then all the other stuff that comes with running a business Financial management personal development, okay, but what they understand is this Action is the key they have to take action and really what that comes down to is they've got to take risks They have to again not only go from what they don't know to what they now know But what they haven't done before to actually doing before and what I've noticed is a lot of times is Has to do with money management. This has to do with risk tolerance. This has to do with identifying Hey, I can't do X Y Z I'm gonna pay someone to do it So the first step of the individuals that are breaking through that barrier is they ask questions they recognize I don't know this or I'm not clear on this I'm gonna find someone that's already invented the airplane and I'm gonna ask how they did it, okay? It's so easy, right? But the second one is the hard one the second one requires you to actually give something up It's either gonna be your money your time or really your resources, right? Whatever that situation is the idea is is that you recognize Action is the next step and take it relentlessly fast action. We're talking about the rocket ship that shoots off into sky We're talking about all of that energy in the beginning needed to get it off the ground It's really what happens in a breakthrough moment for a business owner for a business leader that action is Looking at the money you have and recognizing I can't get much further if I don't change the way I see money if I don't Invest in the marketing agency if I don't invest in the coaching program if I don't invest in the software Okay, now look you might be thinking I don't need any of that stuff. That's fine You know what at the end of the day I might not need leads for my business on Facebook I could just go get them if I knock doors, okay? I could honestly go get the same amount of leads knocking doors as I do now on Facebook that I'm paying Thousands of dollars for however, what's the difference? I have to give up what my time? I got to give up my energy. I got to give up my Resource my vote most valuable resource, okay to get the same result that I could get if I just paid for it Okay, and this is a big shift for most people this is called the investor mindset. This is called Growing beyond who you were when you worked for the nine to five, okay? And this is again, this is what we're talking about individuals that break through we're talking about one percent mindset Okay, because I've seen this I seen a 19 year old now He's selling over two million dollars in painting Sales he's probably 20 now and he was on this podcast twice He signed up twice for a business breakthrough, right? And this is why we provide these resources because I want to be a conduit for those individuals I want to maybe give a give a piece of advice or give a strategy and help people get on their way That's my personal mission and again, that's why I do this podcast But the reality is those two things of the core you have someone that asks a bunch of questions They find the resources they find the people they take advantage because they recognize Someone's already done what I'm trying to do already, right? Someone's already created seven figure house painting businesses Someone's already made it look easy Why am I trying to reinvent the wheel here? Why am I Hammering at this thing thinking that I'm going to do something groundbreaking when the real magic happens Once you actually get through the process of making that wheel term, okay? And that's where it really requires your time energy and effort so you can put your own special spin on your business But again hiring employees has already been figured out, okay? Hiring subcontractors has already been figured out, okay? Selling paint jobs has already been figured out selling gutter installation selling roofing jobs This has already been figured out so what your job is to do is figure out what everyone else is doing You do that by asking the right questions getting in the right groups getting in the right rooms Being a part of the masterminds being a part of the online events signing up for everything signing your team up for everything Read in the books, okay? Getting the knowledge and what you wind up doing when you get all the knowledge is you start seeing patterns and You say wait a minute. This isn't as hard as I thought it would be This isn't as complex as I thought it would be and then there's an unlock that happens that unlock is Wait a minute if I just do XYZ I'll be in the game too and that's the secret to business Generally speaking what you're looking at from the big picture is a bunch of people that Ultimately think that they can do it themselves without without knowledge on how to do it and they might get there Just might take them 10 years and there's a lot of mistakes along the way You know at the end of the day when I used to hire employees. I didn't have a strategy I learned a strategy from a coach I learned it from someone else and I put my own spin on it. I recognize hey, that's a pretty good idea I should probably have them fill out a form first, right? learned that from a coach and then from there I expanded what I learned and created my own style which actually further refined my process and made it even better. So you're going to do that but the basics the foundations are you got to be a reader, you got to be a networker, you got to ask questions, you got to get in the right rooms right, you got to sign up for the free resources, you can't be ecotistical about the fact that ultimately you don't know what you're doing if you're been in business for over three years and you're doing less than $500,000 in revenue, especially in the house painting industry, something's wrong, okay? You got to be humble enough to ask and I'm sure someone like me or some of the other industry experts would be happy to give you the right information to help you along your way. The next thing again let's go back to taking action, you know, at the end of the day taking action is what matters if you're not a quick action taker, right? I spoke to someone the other day about this I said the biggest risk you've ever taken was starting the freaking business. Your business was born from risk. Now I don't know if you remember but generally speaking we all had that fear, right? Of the unknown man, how am I going to sell jobs? How am I going to enter the marketplace? How am I going to get people to say yes to me? Why would I quit my job of certainty to enter the world of uncertainty? This sounds crazy. Do you remember that? Like reflect on it for a second, reflect on putting in your two-week notice or quitting your job on a whim or you know you telling your wife we'll figure it out, okay? We're gonna get there. Remember that, okay? You got you remember that, right? What winds up happening is is you forget what that risk was like. You got comfortable. So you were operating on faith. You were operating on on on high energy because you knew there was no going back and you got to kind of recreate that in your business as you we vav. You got to say you know what? I am going to pay the marketing agency to get it done. I am going to learn this skill. I am going to sign up for the software. I am going to hire the coach. I am going to travel to the event, right? These are all risks every bit of it. All the money that you spend on this stuff because there's no immediate return, right? There's no immediate return when you hire a coach. You're just hoping that you learn a strategy but that strategy could double, triple or even quadruple your income because you're now in a network with individuals, right? So you got to start thinking like that, right? When you become an investor, no investor, no really good investor makes decisions off of whether or not they're going to get their money back as soon as possible, okay? There's no investor that that that operates off of that principle. Now, maybe a seasoned investor might see patterns because he's done it for so long and he might be able to get some quick wins. But anyone that's a normal investor recognizes that when they put in something, when they plan a seed, okay, we have to wait for that seed to mature in order to get the fruit, okay? And that has to be your mindset as a business owner. Now the last one, I'm only going to give you three today because I feel like I feel like I covered it. I feel good about this this this episode here, but I'll tell you this. This is number three, consistent and never ending improvement is who they are. Now, when you wake up in the morning, what's the mindset, right? Do you do you wake up directionless? Do you wake up without a fire in your belly, right? Do you wake up and kind of just like let the day run you, right? You're not going to get anywhere with this mindset, man. You have to understand like what the game you're playing could affect generations. You know, the game you're playing could affect whether or not your your your wife has to work. The game you're playing could affect whether or not your children have to struggle, right? This is serious business, man. Like this is the game I play. This is why I do this. Like it's not to make money. It's to make impact, right? I understand that my actions today not only affect my family to a degree, but everyone else that works for me. So for me waking up early, it's not real. We don't we don't have that negotiation up here, right? For me, drinking, we don't have that negotiation, right? It's too serious of a wager. I like the good life. I like knowing that my businesses are thriving. I like knowing that if I put in inputs into my health, my body, right? Into into into sowing into, you know, the right things. I know that I'm going to reap those fruits and not only my businesses, my customers will reap those fruits. I'm going to track better talent as a leader. I'm going to create a better environment for my team. I like that better. Whatever the short term pleasure is of getting more sleep or drinking or part or whatever that is, I don't want it. So the mindset needs to be you need to be an exception. If you want to be exceptional, it's very simple. Okay? You need to do things that are hard. You need to turn away from fleshly desires, one of which is over sleeping. Okay? You got to lock in, man. You got to get up early. You got to read. You got to create structuring your debt, right? This is leadership principles at this point. If you want people to follow you, I've got 50 employees. Okay? I've got a ton of people counting on me, right? And they need to know that their leader is working, right? I mean, they need to know I'm online. They need to know I'm present. They need to know that I'm out selling. I remember when I was only operating my painting business, you know, some of my team members would say, man, Tanner, I really appreciate you always out there doing your thing because we used to have a boss that would stop at the bar for lunch. That'd be his last stop for the day. And then we wouldn't have any work. I'm running from mediocrity. Okay? You got to live a life like that. You've got to just understand that if you how bad do you want? Like really? Like this is between me and you now, your listen to this, I'm talking to you, what are you wagering because you're not doing what you're supposed to be doing? Like what are you wagering? Who's who's who's paying the penalty? Because whatever it is that you're placing above your personal development, your business growth, it's not worth it. Put down the drink. Okay? Stop partying or whatever you're doing, set your alarm in the morning, get serious. Okay? Well, Tanner, I don't know. I don't have a structure for the morning. Well, then sit there and just sit in silence until God gives it to you. Okay? Because the reality is it's better for you to be in a position of offense than a position of defense in the morning. I know some of you guys know what that means. Okay? And I'll tell you the most important thing as a business owner is to always be ready. All right? Stay ready. So you don't have to get ready. Right? So start there. But reality is is you're going to start using that as creative time. You're going to start creating ideas. You're going to finally work on the SOPs. You're going to build out your business in a way that you could sell it one day, right? Or have the option to sell it. That's the mindset. So I gave you a lot today, but I want you to I want you to hit on two things. I want you to ask questions, sign up for the coaching. Some of you guys never signed up for a business breakthrough. And the biggest reason I hear when people tell me they're not ready for a business breakthrough is is they don't feel like, you know, they have anything to bring to the table. In other words, they need to get a bunch of stuff done first. Like, oh, well, I just want to get this done first before I talk to you, Tanner. Or you know what? I don't really want people hearing me like whatever. Okay. At the end of the day, you know, the benefit is is it's maybe you're helping somebody else out there who probably has the same problems you have. So don't let anything hinder you from finding the information, you know, biblical. All right. Knock. And you will the door will be open for you. Seek. And you will find. Okay. So what I just want to share with you today is be relentless in your pursuit of greatness. Be relentless with yourself. Be relentless with the information you need to get to get there. Be resourceful. Okay. And relentlessly take action with bold faith. And you will get what you want. Now, make sure you clearly define what is with what you want and make sure you set your target with the right intent. Right. I don't know. You know, we're not chasing Lamborghini's. You know, if that's what you want, sure, but when you get it, I guarantee you you won't feel as fulfilled as if you got it after first pursuing the kingdom, first creating a scenario where people are benefiting from the seeds that you've planted. Okay. So that's number one. And then number two, you'll get what you want. You know, there's a place for that. There's a place to enjoy. There's a place to enjoy the fruits of your labor. But it's it needs to be earned. It starts with you. It starts with your decision making. You know, my businesses are a sum total of the decisions I've made up into this point. And all of them were not business decisions. You know, drip jobs now serves 2500 business owners. This is amazing to have 2500 businesses powered by a software I created five years ago, right? Changed the world when it came to home service. Okay. And the way home service businesses interact with their customers. But not only that manage their business operations, I can't even measure the impact. I can't even tell you how many proposals have been sent with this software. I can't even tell you how many sales have been made. How many people have gotten jobs because the business owner uses drip jobs sold some extra jobs and got hired because of that. I can't measure the impact. And it's not for me to measure. It's the it's for the glory of God. It's for the glory of the industry. Okay. And the people that use it. And And I believe it's a test. to the disciplines that I've put myself through over the years to create that outcome. And you could do the same in your painting business. So again, I will ask you to remind you who is it that's not getting the benefits right now because of your initability to create a scenario where you give yourself no way out and you seek and you knock and you ask, okay, who is it? Because that's going to be your levers. That's going to be your anchor, is it your father? Okay, maybe you have someone with addiction in the family, right? Is it your significant other, all right? Is it your kids? Okay, are you tired of what's going on? You have the ability. There's only one way to change it and it's through you. So maybe make this your wake up call, felt called to give it to you today. Hope you got something out of this. Thank you for listening to this. Check out Rautomized Guys.
