3 Systems for ADHD Brains

The speaker analyzes recent Steelers contract extensions, focusing on Darnell Washington's deal, which they deem slightly rich given his limited offensive impact—only two career touchdowns and 625 receiving yards—though they acknowledge his elite blocking skills. The team appears to be betting on his potential, but the speaker questions the investment given McCarthy's preference for three-wide sets over two-tight-end formations. The discussion shifts to the edge rusher room, where the Steelers have committed significant money to Nick Herbig, Alex Highsmith, and T.J. Watt. The speaker advocates trading Highsmith now while his value is high, or possibly Watt, whose contract is less prohibitive than assumed, with a $20 million dead cap hit in 2026 offering $32 million in savings. T.J. Watt's comments reveal past resistance to moving around the defense under Tomlin, a change under McCarthy's more detail-oriented, interchangeable system. Overall, the speaker sees the Washington deal as defensible but not a bargain, and suggests the team must make a tough decision on its edge rushers to avoid a logjam.

All right, limits. Here we go again. The Steelers signing their class of 2023 to very generous contracts, I would say. I defended the her big deal yesterday. I'm a little more mixed on Mount Washington here. The number surprised me. The 21 million guaranteed surprised me. Now I read on Steelers Depot that part of that is, I don't even know what they're talking about. They know what they're talking about. I'm not well versed on injury guarantee versus guarantee. They say the 21 million may not be fully guaranteed, but it's being reported widely as a 21 million dollar charge in guaranteed money on top of 40 million plus on the deal. It seems slightly rich to me. He's the 12th highest paid tight end in the NFL. However, however, when you look at tight ends around the league, I don't think anyone's going to call this a great era of tight ends. I can tell you that. And he's below friar, Muth. It's 10 million in change per year. Again, they're paying still on potential like with her big to me. Really? He's a very good blocking tight end. Although that hasn't, and it's not his fault, but it's not like they have one of the great ground games in the league. Maybe he'll contribute to one in the near future here. And he has what two touchdowns in his whole career? Yeah, two two catches for touchdowns in his whole career. So I like him as a player. Don't get me wrong. This just seemed a little bit rich. I don't think it's going to, you know, hamper the franchise, moving forward in any way. I still think they're going to sign Joey Porter, Jerry Dole Act reporting that the Steelers have said that that they only feel like they can sign three of the four candidates from that class. To me, that leaves out Keanu Beton because you got a sign Porter. And I think they will. So bottom line for me, I think Porter gets signed. And I'm a little bit mixed on the Washington signing, but it's not, it's not something that's going to cripple the franchise or anything like that. I'm sort of okay with it. You, I was a little bit surprised to see how much money it was. Yes, that guarantee surprised me. It is half of what the total contract can be at 42 million for basically right around what nine and a half or well, over 10 million, that is a million. 50% of the snaps. He played the highest amount of snaps of any of their tight ends last year. Yeah. Where John who Smith and Pat Fryer Muth obviously were expected to be bigger contributors than they actually were. They must see something more in the offense with Washington under McCarthy where they're going to run two tight ends sets. I thought McCarthy's offense was more dictated to three wide receivers. And it's part of the reason why they picked Jeremy Bernard in the second round. It acquired Michael Pittman. Yeah. So I question it from that perspective. I think they just view Washington as such an important part of the run game to that's the key. Regardless of what they think of Fryer Muth and the impact that he can have in the past game, which I think will be improved from a year ago. They view Washington as at least last year, I thought the anchor of the run game. A big reason why they were able to have the success that they did with Gainwell and with Warren. And when you bring in Rico Dowdell, who's more of a downhill runner, too, I think that's why they're giving this deal to Washington with the cap, continue to go up, to go up. They need to use him more in the red zone, Joe. Like you mentioned, it. He only has 600 plus receiving yards in his entire career in three seasons, 625 and two touchdowns. That's it. It's not like it's 57 total catches should be what a tight end making this amount of money has in one season, let alone three. Yeah. I guess in the final evaluation, he's somebody you have to account for in the past game. I think he is. And he made some legendary plays last year, where he just threw guys to the field, but a guy that sized, there's no excuse not to use him in the red zone more. I agree with that. And if they do and you see that one touchdown per season, jump up to four or five because they're basically having him box out of the fender like he's when been yama on the block. That's what they need to do. Just throw the ball up to him. And they only did it once last year. I know. We'll see though. Sometimes guys that big aren't great 50 50 guys, but we'll see. And he is a really good blocker. And I think Mike McCarthy really values that in the run game. So this is it's just bottom line. It's slightly above what I thought he would get slightly above. It's not a great value. A big deal. And and he could he could blossom. That's what they're counting on is with both him and her big and I do understand the other side of it. The cynic and I'm often a cynic would say they just gave $140 million to two backups to two part time players. What's that ever happened? What's going on here? That's the time of money we give to part time. Pop. That's exactly it. Bob, by the way, had to step out. So we're going to move on here. He had to deal with the situation. So nothing wrong. But just had to deal with something. Something we knew about coming into the show. It's all good. So we forge ahead here. And next up is Joey Porter, Jr. And that to me, the reason it's taken this long is it's probably involves more money than both the first guys combined or right around there. I bet you that's kind of why I thought they'd get the Porter deal done first. They would want to have those finances set so they know either they're the opposite or the opposite. You get ever you get the other two guys. You definitely want signed and now you know what you have. Well, don't you want to prioritize Porter as the number one guy. Maybe they did, but but you can't wait around forever. You know what I mean? Yeah. They probably did prioritize him. And now they may be in a situation where they realize, all right. Maybe we're a little farther apart than we thought. We have other business to tend to. We'll get back to you. I wonder the timing of these deals to Joe because typically these contracts linger into the start of camp. Sometimes even in the middle of camp, Watts deal lingered into week one a couple of years ago. We've seen the same thing happen with Hayward. And it makes me think is this different with McCarthy is the head coach. Like does McCarthy want to say to Omar like, Hey, let's get these things done as soon as possible. Manitory mini camp OTAs so that there's no distractions in training camp because that was a constant discussion point with Tom one and Tom one training camps. Oh, Cam Hayward is out there on the field today. He's having his soft hold in. He's only going through a couple of workouts or O T.J. Watt decided not to do anything at practice today and Tom one has to address it. I wonder if things are different now with McCarthy. I think it's just fair to say after 19 years of Tom one, get it done early and not have to worry about any of those distractions. Interesting that you should mention the comparisons because people are being asked about that. And this was T.J. Watt. Do we have this Clipper? Should I just read it limits? I do want second. I do have this from Ray Fittipaldo. T.J. Watt who I'm not sure was a huge Tomlin fan. He was asked about the differences between a McCarthy practice and a Tomlin practice. Well, you don't see benches out here anymore. It's just it's just interesting because there's two two ways it's going to catch. There's many different ways to do things. We're just doing things much different than what I've used to over the last nine years. And it's good. Change is good for me. Really hats off to CJ has a lot of really good drill work for us to do. We break sound film well. And we also just have a solid outside line that we're going to begin with. So it's really competitive. You don't see many benches out there anymore. It's much different. Change is good. Now he said there's many ways to skin a cap. But it sounds like he likes this. What does he mean by that? Oh, limitless wonder that there's not guys sitting around and you know what? A very key word that it seems everybody's talking about. Even cam Hayward on the opposite side of the ball is detail detail detail detail. It's the only word I'm hearing out of all these guys. So are they saying that Tomlin's defense lacked attention to detail or maybe the offense or maybe both. That's kind of the way that I view it. They're more detail oriented. And I thought something else that was very interesting that what said. I don't know if you're about to bring this up was the ability to move around on the defense. Yeah. It's not a choice anymore for TJ. Do you have that? Here it is. Yeah, I think in the past it was a little bit more of me being stubborn. And I think this new system allows a lot of it's built in. So I really can't say no. I have to move with it. A lot of us are interchangeable parts. You're not just learning your position. You kind of have to learn the whole defense of front structure because we all are basically interchangeable. We knew different things. So I think you're going to see a lot more moving out of not just me, but the whole front. Well, that continues to baffle me. So he's basically confirming there that he did say no in the past. Yes. And Tom one just catered to what TJ wanted. Okay, TJ. You don't want to move around. That's fine. Rather than what was best for the defense. Right. That sounds to me. Like TJ what moving around the defense, depending up against, you know, if there's a stud right guard or right tackle that he's going up against, maybe move to the left side, maybe attack the blind side. But no, Mike Tomlin was just completely fine. Yeah. We'll keep Alex on that side. We'll keep TJ on this side. Her big will come in and packages. It just did seem like things got so stale under Tomlin. He just catered to some of the players in there and they're one threader than what was best for the defense. Right. So it seems like in the past what he's confirming there is he was asked to move around, which as you said, other guys do look at Miles Garrett. Why wouldn't you want that advantage? And he said, no, I'm not doing that. I'm just not going to do it, which then raises the question, well, why didn't Tomlin and Terrell Austin have defenses concocted in which TJ couldn't say no to them either. Or maybe he just wanted to say no to them, but won't say no to this. It's just that the whole thing remains baffling for a guy who has taken a couple steps back in his career the past two years. He has that that's that's inarguable. I still think people have gone too far with the TJ watching the contract was bad. They should have traded him been saying that for literal years. That's different than saying this is a guy who can't play anymore. In fact, he's still, I think going to be this season an elite pass rusher. That's what I still think he is. But he's taken some steps back. And I have to think that part of that is, is he's become easier to game plan for. Why wouldn't you want to create mismatches? I don't get it, man. No, I really don't because you would think it may be it it does seem like it's just TJ whopping uncomfortable and the amount of money that he makes he has more pole than everyone else to make that decision on what he thinks is best for himself. But clearly that wasn't the case that he needed to move around last year. They're going to have to be very creative this year. If they're going to keep all three of these guys and I'm still not convinced they are no matter what they say. I mean, my God, how many examples do we need with the Steelers or any other professional sports team? Go look at Cleveland. We're not trading miles. Garrett to know that what they're saying could actually be the direct opposite. It could be the biggest clue that the direct opposite's going to happen. So I'm not believing anything that I hear about them keeping all three. In fact, I heard, can you limits for the next segment? Grab the Mike Floreo clip from yesterday with the PM guys where they were talking about the money for TJ what because I think that yesterday I was not especially accurate when I said, you know what? The money is going to make this prohibitive. That's a lot of other people are saying. But the PM guys in Floreo looked into this a little bit further and I don't think it would be that prohibitive financially for the Steelers to trade TJ what? Why don't we talk about that? Next and I want to present to you a question with all of this. Who would you rather see traded? TJ what or Alex high Smith and who do you think would bring back more? What or high Smith? We're going to hear from Floreo next and we're going to talk about that and then welcome in Jeff Hatthorn at the top of the hour. Where are they finding the money? It's a good question. Most people are answering you with the right answer. They had a lot of space and the reason they have a lot of space at least the biggest reason is they're not paying a quarterback. Yeah, they don't have a lot of space this year, but all these contracts are kicking in next year. Yeah. So that's that's basically where the money comes in and Rodgers 20 some million dollars is coming off the books and maybe they trade high Smith and it's also not crazy money when you get when you get right down to it three years from now. Nick Kerbig won't be in the top 20 or 25 edge rushers in terms of annual salary. And like I just said about Mount Washington, he's the 12th paid 12th highest paid tight end in the league right now, which seems a little high. But it's not a golden era for tight ends. And again, by the time the money kicks in two, three years from now, he won't be in the top 20 tight ends. That's the thing you're looking ahead saying is this guy a piece on our team? We know he ain't Tony Gonzalez. The Steelers know that we know that when the money starts to kick in, which is next year. And then when you look down the road a little bit, two, three years, where's this guy going to slot? He might not be in the top 25 tight ends. Her big might not be in the top 25 edge rushers. They think these guys are going to become increasingly bigger pieces of the team. And that position is defensible. You might not agree with that out there, but it's defensible. And they're going to be either very well-slotted or outright bargains by the time the money really kicks in. I think I think it makes sense in a way, even though the Washington deal to me seemed a little bit actually more surprising than her big in some ways. I totally see the rationale for one two nine two eight ninety three seventy. But the question then becomes with those two deals and more to come probably what happens to other guys? What's the future of Pat Fryer-Muth after this season? What about high Smith who this time next year is going to be looking for a contract? so why are you coldthe guys trapped so well and can't live outside and the goriga is free so I gonna be so close right - No I don't know about where to park no - I Santa some girl you do not say you driver mommby please Ji ok ok you and if you don't want to go to the park, you can go to the park ok, I'll go - Yeah and then, let's go to the guesthouse um. resistance we can't go there, this is the final boss resilience yes, good! woohoo! so there was an idea out there that the TJ Watt contract would prevent the Steelers realistically from trading Watt that it would be too prohibitive for them not so sure about that now, let's take a listen to Mike Floreo with Pony and Mueller yesterday and then talk about this here is Mr. Floreo 2026 deadcap would be 10 million 2027 deadcap would be 20 million 2026 savings would be 32 million is what I have yeah, well, it's not crazy then if that's accurate, it's not crazy and I'm looking at this now too the signing bonus was was 40 million spread over four years I know the first three years of this deal are fully guaranteed so it goes 10, 10, 10, and 10 it would be 10 this year and 20 next year if they would trade them now and that's it, it's pretty clean that's not bad there's no restructuring, they don't play those games, a lot of teams get into trouble with option bonuses because that creates separate avenue for acceleration but yeah, it's 20 million dollars next year but it's also like you said, you got a cash savings of 32 you get a net gain of 12 million in cap space if they would do this deal now next year and a savings of 32 million in cash and there's been no cash commitment this year that they'd have to worry that you know that money's gone and that was the key for them as well starting to say with Miles Garrett when they delayed an option bonus from March 15 until a week before the start of the season that was the club that he's available why else would you do that? they didn't pay him the 29.2 million and now the rents so there you go if that's all accurate then there really isn't that much financial, not that many financial ramifications to trading TJ want hence the question out there who would you rather deal? water high Smith or rather keep all three I guess I'm asking you for your best solution to what I would call a dilemma when you have a quarter of a billion dollars in your edge rusher room solve it 412 928 9370 the reporting out there is telling us that all three will be around this year I would say and I'm glad that the Steelers took my advice limits and prioritize Nick Kerbig because I'm saying that for months decide on what and high Smith later take the kid that you discovered in the fourth round that you developed that's about I think to become a star whenever or if he gets to play full-time minutes any one of these years and keep him and again by the time the money kicks in for this guy especially if it's a year or two down the road the money kicks in next year two years from now they could have Nick Kerbig who if the numbers translate to more to more playing time. And he puts a he he he gets after quarterbacks at the same rate. He's going to be an unbelievable bargain. That's what's going to happen a couple of years. So now that's what I think will happen. That's why I wanted them to sign him. I think that's a great deal. And I'm actually surprised at at the criticism of it. And anecdotally, it feels to me like whether it's been on the station or just out in general, listening to other shows, reading comments, whatever, that most people think this was a little crazy by the Steelers. I don't think so. I don't think it was. And my plan right now, as I mentioned yesterday, would be to trade high Smith because right now, you're selling as high as you ever will unAlexis Smith as you ever will. He's coming off a good year. That's a B, he's healthy, which is not his usual state. He was nicked up a little last year, coming off a good year. He's healthy and has two years left on a manageable contract. Now, if you want to trade what as seems more palatable financially than it did yesterday to me. That would actually be what I'd prefer. I still think there's plenty of teams that look at TJ Watt as a guy who could change things for us. I really do. The contract doesn't prohibit it. And I actually still think that Watt would bring back more. I really do. I think Watt brings back more than high Smith does. Plus then you could maybe look at signing Alex is Smith again next year. If he stays healthy, he's productive again. Then next year you can talk again and you're certainly not going to be paying him TJ Watt money. So then you could have suddenly high Smith and her big as your ed rushers move in forward and move on from TJ. I like that idea the best. And I still think that TJ brings back the most. And by the way, by the way, O limitless wonder. Pony asked Mike Floreo what TJ would bring back in a trade and Floreo said, what I've been saying since the day this idea was broached many months ago years ago, probably well years ago, definitely a first round pick. But it feels like within the last year, a lot of people, including on this station have been saying, oh, there's no way TJ Watt brings back a first round pick. That seems to be what most people are saying right now. Well, guess what Floreo said? You start with a first round pick for TJ Watt and I believe that I just happen to believe the Steelers don't want to deal him because he's one of these mythical one helmet guys. They always talk about the one helmet guys, how special that is to them. And it's a load of crap actually because when you look at, for instance, Ben, you could look at Troy, Paul, Amalo and Heinz Ward. Really, you could look at Paul Amalo and Ward. Those are the best examples. Yeah, they were one helmet guys and it was real important to the Steelers to have them as one helmet guys until they thought they couldn't play anymore and didn't want to pay them when they couldn't play anymore. And then they were more than willing, both those guys easily, the Steelers cut ties with them. So what the Steelers weren't the reason that Paul Amalo and Ward became one helmet guys, Paul Amalo and Ward decided not to play anywhere else. So the one helmet thing is always important until we think you can't play anymore. And then you can go play for another team. Oh, wait, you didn't play for another team. Well, then the one helmet thing is great. See, we only wanted you to play for the Steelers. So with TJ, I actually do think it's important that they want him to have the prime years of his career here, but trust me. If there comes a time later on when they don't think he can play anymore, the one helmet thing goes out the window. For now, though, I think they want to maintain that. I really do. I don't think they want to trade TJ want. That would be the guy I would trade. And yeah, you're selling low on him, but, but I agree with Floreo. He brings back a first round pick. You mean to tell me if one of these teams that need an edge russier and I use the bills as an example, because I know that team very well. TJ want is what could bring Buffalo to a Super Bowl. That's what they've desperately been missing. It's probably too late, actually. Can you imagine him in that lineup when the one thing that was keeping the bills from going to Super bowls is they couldn't tackle Patrick Mahomes when it mattered. They couldn't tackle Joe Burrow in a playoff game when it mattered. They had no pass rush. You don't think the Buffalo bills would give up a first round pick for TJ want. I think you're out of your mind. And I think there's other teams that would and apparently Floreo agrees for one, two, nine, two, eight, ninety three, seventy. So even though I think that high Smith, if you're ever going to trade him, now's the optimal time. I think that what is the guy I would trade and I would move forward with my two younger edge russiers with Jack Sawyer and reserve. That's what I would do. What would you do? Nine, two, eight, ninety three, seventy. Let's hit the phones. Wonder twin. Here is rich in car Michaels to start us off. Hey, Rich. Hi, Joe. How are you doing? Good. Can I ask your question? Would you, are you talking about trading what now? Yeah. Or right now today, if you can find a first round pick. Well, I, so you don't, you don't think I think they, they're, I think they think they're, they're all in this year. I really do. I think they're going to keep them all. But next year, I could see if this, this time, this time, next year, he's, next year, he's a year older. You don't know that he gets through the year intact. And, and does all in mean you have to keep all three? Like I heard a, a D.D. yesterday was very good. She feels like if, or not, was it a D.D. Somebody was on the station yesterday saying, if you trade one of these guys, oh my God, then all of a sudden, you're not all in anymore. Why? I agree. Why? If you, you don't think herbbing and, and you don't think herbbing and high Smith would be a really good book end pair. I, I do, but now you get rid of what? Now you got Jack, sorry, you, you have confidence in Jack, so you can step up. Yeah, I think he can be a good third guy. I mean, since when, since when do you have to have three edge rushers? Let, like, like, do you need three offensive tackles? Or do you need two good ones yet? Like, are we looking to fortify every position, one deep with a huge contract? I still think they can have really good edge rushers and have two of them. Just like you have two starting tackles, you have two corners that are usually, you know, pretty well compensated on a lot of teams. You get two. I don't think you get three. Once you're kind of interested that, that this, that the first year, I mean, I think that this is going to, I think it was all about coaching last year. You know, a lot had to do with it. Don't you even try to see what this, this coaching staff can, could do with all three of them? Yeah, kind of, but I don't know how much can you actually do? And, and who does that cost time to elsewhere? I don't know. What are you going to put her big inside? You can put one of these guys inside. Yeah, I guess there's some intrigue there, but there's more intrigue with, with seeing what Patrick Graham can do with, let's say her big and high Smith or what and her big. I think that's good enough. I think our front line, I think our, our, our, our defensive line is going to be top five. Yeah, and, and if they did what you said, if they did what you said, they were going to do that cuts down on one guy most of the time, right? Cause if you have her big high Smith and what in the game, guess what? You only have two defensive linemen in the game. It's, it's tricky, man. It is because I agree. I would have gotten rid of what a year ago, me too. They're all win. That, that, that, that, that, they're all win now. You know, I mean, and I think, you know, McCarthy wants to make a big splash. Yeah, I, I, I just think it's going to be a year in a waiting. And I know we might not get what we, but I, but what the most important thing is if they, if you can get off that contract, you know, then you have a little wiggle room, the doll kind of stuff, you know, I would get, I would get, I would get, I would do, I really do. Well, when you say all in, what, what do you think that translates to? You believe they have the quarterback to make you play off run? Yeah. Well, it's not, I gotta be honest with you. I'm hurt. So I've been watching my goal on YouTube watching those air Rogers. I'd say what? You give them a little bit more time and some more weapons. Yeah, I think we can run deep. I really do. All right. We've got, we got the dogs. We got, we got a lot of dogs. I mean, young with old mixed, I kind of like it. I just, I mean, trade to see what could happen. And then next year blow it up, you know, well, blow it up. You got a bunch of young guys that you're signing for hundreds of millions dollars. No, I'm talking about the, you know, I'm talking about the veterans. You know, I mean, some of the veterans got, you know, like, you know, take what may, maybe even, you know, what I mean, and I just, I just think, it. All right. I got you. I got you. I like Rogers. I like Rogers. Okay. You're entitled to all of that and you might turn out to be right. I see your point of view on that. I really do. I just don't happen to agree with it. Next. Bo wants to talk about TJ Wad. Hello, Bo. Hey guys, thanks for taking the call. The TJ Wad thinks she's been done long ago with Tom. But unfortunately, the Steelers are more and more interested in gold. [BLANK_AUDIO] the market and they are super bowl trophy. Well, when you say the TJ watt thing, you wanted them to trade him, so did I. Is that what you mean? Absolutely. They should have dumped them. His numbers were down. It's fine. His brother would have stayed off a macabre show. We weren't assigned them. It's just ridiculous. The way this team has been managed for Art Rooney, he's got to be rolling in his grave. It's all about a billion dollars helping him out and they could cure less about super bowl. That's why they brought back Rogers. So if we stake, we'll still be on TV for the Rogers. Well, do you give him some credit? Do you give him some credit for signing guys here? Oh, absolutely. They're certainly taking that approach. But with that, they could have dumped DJ. You know, champs are great guys. The player or the wall or paint guy, but you know, can read the commercials. Give it in to her. All right. Not sure what happened at the end there. Do you know what happened at the end there, Limits? Not really. Just being cautious. I don't know what happened. Jeff Hathorns is going to join us coming up next. Sonny in a high of 85 Nate Washington today, a low of 67, Ricard, Rick Helm. What was chemo von Allhoffin's number, Limits? Could you look that up, please? I will. Just look up K-I-M-O Steelers number. No, I think you're right. I just didn't know. I'm going to type out the long of the name. No, I mean, it was 67. He was 67. Yeah. Did you see the fan last night run onto the court? I did. I was watching I had a split screen of the pirates and that. The guy just ran out of the court with a full screen of that limits. By the way, if you have the sports net app and then YouTube TV, no, I'd added on direct TV direct TV. Yeah. See, I can't get a split screen when I have to go from YouTube to S&P. No, you need either two different TVs. It hurts. I'll tell you. Or you just have to flip back and forth between multiple different apps. Yeah. Anyway, this guy ran on the court at the Spurs game. I think it was in the fourth quarter. It was. And was taken as selfie. Wembee was laughing. Mitchell Robinson was not laughing. He was concerned as I think anybody would have been. And I think that guy got off lucky because. What an idiot. Yeah. Running on the court in the NBA. The jackass. What a jerk. And as far as I'm concerned, anything that happens to somebody who enters the field of play is fair game. Somebody wanted to go James Harrison on him or worse than that was their prerogative. Yeah. Cause his whole goal and intention was to run on the court stand by Wembee and take a picture. Idiot. I'm sure it's social media viral today. I mean, things could turn out real bad for somebody like that. If somebody mistakes the phone in his hand for a weapon of sort. And, and I'm not sure I would blame. Security or anybody else. If if it got to that level because somebody runs onto a court, your only job is to protect the people on the court. That's scary to think about. You know, three dick. Oh, I agree. And you see it in the championship. It seems like every single year. You do happens like once. What? It wasn't like championships. Well, whether it's the NBA finals or I've never seen it at the NBA. Super ball. It seems like it seems like it happens once a year in one of those leagues. Oh, yeah. People run out of the field at the Super Bowl. I think it happened this past year in Santa Clara. That should never happen in the NBA. Everybody's sitting court side will be pretty hard to keep it from happening. And the NFL. It should never happen. Well, no, the NFL should never happen. Baseball. You could just baseball the same. You shouldn't be a no hockey. There's no way anybody's getting on the ice. But has it ever happened in hockey? I feel like someone's tried to climb the glass. Yeah. You think Bob would do it? Not a chance. Bob's too busy up in the suite. He's not that close to the ice. Yeah, there's a lot of other things happening around the NFL too. So let's talk to Jeff Hathor and plus he's been out at he's been everywhere. He's been at Steelers mini camp. He's been following the pirates all year in their locker room. We'll talk to them or we'll talk to him about them. All of our teams. Next, Jeff Hathor. Look at this weather limits. Looks like there's one day of rain, but other than that, it's going to be beautiful. Yeah, is it going to rain on Saturday night? I'm a little concerned about that. Oh, you got a whistleball game? No pirates. I'm going to the big concert this weekend. What is it? Morgan Wallins in town Friday and Saturday night. My sister's and I are going and it's supposed to rain Saturday night now and I'm not looking forward to that. By the way, sometimes it's more fun in the rain limits. You know what I'm really sick of? And somebody just tweeted this, people saying modern day NBA players don't play defense. Those people are idiots and have no idea what they're talking about. And they're showing clips from the game last night to which somebody would say, well, that's in the finals. You can watch any NBA game. And you watch how these guys play defense. And there are some bad defensive teams admittedly, but they play lockdown defense. Oh, yeah. And the playoffs, there's no doubt that in the regular season. Well, I don't, I don't think there's that great defense in the regular season, but the. You don't limit. I'd love to see you go out on the court and try and score on one of these. I'm not trying to claim that I can't. I watch, for instance, every single warriors game out there. And I can tell you that in the NBA, they play defense every single night. There's a lot of laxataisical effort out there at times. A lack of days at golefort. There's limits in the NBA. Okay. At times there are. Yeah. In the playoffs, I don't, I don't doubt it at all. I'll take your word for it. In the playoffs, they play hard core defense. Like last night, it was a physical war out there, especially in the fourth quarter. Great. The referee swallow the whistle in the playoffs. There's a lot more whistles in the regular season on the. Really? Now all of a sudden you're giving me all this intricate stuff on the NBA. How much NBA do you want? How dare you question my integrity on this topic? All right. Tell me more. You watch a lot of NBA. You got me to pull up the official numbers on how's the referee swallow the whistle in the playoffs. No, no, no, I want you to tell me how much NBA you watch. Sorry. I didn't keep track and a ledger every single game. I would say a lot. Okay. Fair enough. I'll tell you this much too. Jalen Brunson is one pound for pound and inch for inch. One of the most unbelievable scores I've ever seen it. That shouldn't be happening. It shouldn't be happening. He's a master of using his body and creating angles. I don't know how he does it. I'm watching highlights right now of him against like four different defenders last night. And he's incredible. He's one of the most incredible basketball players I've ever seen. How tall is he limits? Brunson. Yeah. He's like six foot two six two six three. Is he? He is six two. It's unbelievable. What he does? Sean Myers just texted me and said you're absolutely right. NBA players get lazy way too often on lazy lazy. Sean. Yeah. Do any job player? Do any job players get lazy? Sean is a very astute man. Do any job? Get lazy in the regular season on defense. We're not comparing the NHL. I am now. Yeah. I am now. I don't think so. No, they don't. But the NBA. Oh, okay. Yeah. It's a different game. It's not apples to orange. Do NFL players get lazy during games and do baseball players get lazy during games? You're comparing apples to oranges here. I'm comparing pro sports across the sport. Well, I don't think that those sports players do. But in the NBA, I do think that they do. just the NBA. Jeff Hathornex.

Podcast Summary

Key Points:

  1. The Steelers signed tight end Darnell Washington to a contract worth up to $42 million with $21 million guaranteed, which the speaker finds slightly overpriced given his limited career production (two touchdowns, 625 receiving yards in three seasons).
  2. Washington is valued primarily for his blocking ability, especially in the run game, but the speaker questions the investment due to his minimal red-zone usage and the team's shift to more three-wide-receiver sets under new head coach Mike McCarthy.
  3. The team prioritized signing edge rusher Nick Herbig, but the speaker expects Joey Porter Jr. to be signed next, while Alex Highsmith or T.J. Watt may be traded due to a crowded edge rusher room with over $250 million committed.
  4. T.J. Watt confirmed past resistance to moving around the defense under Mike Tomlin, a change under McCarthy's new system that emphasizes interchangeability and attention to detail.
  5. Trading T.J. Watt is financially feasible, with a manageable $20 million dead cap hit in 2026 and $32 million in cap savings, making it a viable option to address the edge rusher surplus.

Summary:

The speaker analyzes recent Steelers contract extensions, focusing on Darnell Washington's deal, which they deem slightly rich given his limited offensive impact—only two career touchdowns and 625 receiving yards—though they acknowledge his elite blocking skills. The team appears to be betting on his potential, but the speaker questions the investment given McCarthy's preference for three-wide sets over two-tight-end formations. J.

Watt. The speaker advocates trading Highsmith now while his value is high, or possibly Watt, whose contract is less prohibitive than assumed, with a $20 million dead cap hit in 2026 offering $32 million in savings. J.

FAQs

The deal surprised some due to the $21 million guaranteed, though part may be injury guarantees. Washington is the 12th-highest-paid tight end, and his production has been limited with only two career touchdowns.

They value his blocking, especially for the run game, and see him as an anchor. They may also plan to use him more in the red zone, where his size could be an advantage.

His deal is expected to be larger than the other two signed players, and negotiations may extend into training camp. The Steelers are prioritizing him but may have other business to handle first.

Watt noted fewer benches and more drill work under McCarthy, emphasizing detail and change. He said the new system allows more movement on defense, unlike the past where he was more stubborn about staying in one spot.

It suggests he previously refused to move around, and Tomlin accommodated that preference. The new system requires interchangeable parts, which may improve defensive versatility and game planning.

Yes, the financial ramifications are manageable. Trading him in 2026 would save $32 million in cap space with only $10 million in dead cap, making it a viable option.
