25m 43s
The transcription begins with advertisements for Gatorade and Altra running shoes, then transitions into a psychology podcast episode. The host addresses the frustration of knowing you need to change but failing to do so, challenging the "Gabriela syndrome"—the belief that "I was born this way." She argues that insight or understanding problems is not enough; behavior changes only through practice and repetition. The brain prioritizes familiar patterns over healthy ones, so new behaviors feel uncomfortable initially, but neuroplasticity enables lifelong learning and adaptation. She outlines five common mistakes that hinder change: waiting for motivation before acting, attempting radical overhauls, treating relapses as failures, staying in environments that reinforce old habits, and defining yourself by your behaviors (e.g., "I am a procrastinator" vs. "I procrastinate"). True change, she emphasizes, is unglamorous—it happens through small, consistent actions, like saying "no" despite guilt or completing a task despite fear. Confidence and motivation typically follow action, not precede it. She concludes by reassuring listeners that past patterns don't dictate the future; you can become the person you aspire to be through repeated choices, one behavior at a time. The episode encourages starting today, as progress begins with a single step.

And now, to start, I answer something in the comments, okay?
You already realized that a behavior, you saw that you needed to change,
you wanted to change, you compromised with yourself, but some weeks later you were doing exactly the same thing.
Maybe you procrastinate, maybe you're with a difficulty, to put limits.
Maybe you continue to insist on the relationships that hurt you, that do not do well for you.
Maybe you emotionally explode, you are extremely self-critical,
or so living by decisions that are important, and the most frustrating is that you know that.
You know about your defects, the things you need to improve, you recognize the problem,
you have consciousness, but you can't change it.
And this suggests a very painful feeling, because at some point you start to think,
"Is this how I am? Is this how I can't change? Is this just my way?"
And then, many people come in, what I'm talking about is something I've heard a lot back then,
but it's syndrome of Gabriela, you remember that song?
I was born like this, I grew up like this, just like this, Gabriela.
This voice rolls here, it's wonderful, it's great, it's great for you.
But the syndrome of Gabriela, this thing, I don't have to do it, I'm just so ready.
But when this idea comes into our identity, even if we talk about brainwaves,
that's really dangerous, because we start to deal with learning behaviors,
like they were in permanent characteristics, and today I want to talk to you about that.
Why is it so hard to change? Why is consciousness not enough?
Because there are people who don't have consciousness, right?
You must know someone in your family, who is already older, and says, "My God, he is already like this,
he won't change more, he has to learn to live with him, I have people like this from my family."
But these people usually are those who are not a bit open to reflect about their own behaviors,
or other people, but it's tough with a difficulty to admit their mistakes,
and we don't want them like this, we are people, you who are listening to this podcast,
and you have to deny it like this, if you choose, I heard a podcast called "Obsclusive"
in the practice, I imagine you are open to change, but it can be that you can't
for a series of factors that we have talked about this episode, what is psychology taught
about transformations, real and hard times?
There is a very common beliefs about personal development, which is the idea that
it is enough to understand the problem, to solve it.
So there are people like that who will be able to understand the problem,
they want to understand the cause, where I see it, they want to understand and say,
they saw a specialist about their own problems, if you saw that, you know how to explain everything,
why they act like this, why they have these traumas, these hurts, these wounds,
they say it's a beauty, but change is good, then it's hard, right?
Because only understanding about the problem does not solve, unfortunately it doesn't work like this,
it works if no one would procrastinate, no one would remain silent, no one would repeat
patterns that make bad for themselves, because most people already know what we need to change.
Think about me, some people already know that the pressure of me is better,
use social media, put me to exercise, right?
To help everyone control their impulses, but they continue doing the opposite,
because the problem is not information, we have a lot of information,
the problem is transformation, because there is a difference in the norm between these two things.
One of the sentences that I most repeat to patients is that the insight is not change,
you can have a wonderful insight in a therapy session,
you can understand exactly how I said it, because what you do is what you do,
identify the origin of the problem, understand your childhood, your parents, the children,
but that does not mean that you develop a new ability, understand that you have a difficulty to put limits,
does not mean that you learn to put limits, understand that you seek validation in relationships,
that you have a security crisis, etc., this does not mean that you learn to validate,
understand that you procrastinate, does not mean that you learned agi,
and even though you procrastinate, so even what you need to understand here is the beginning,
but it is not the end, this is one of the biggest frustrations that is in the therapeutic process,
for example, because the person thinks, "oh, I understood everything, the therapy has been for months,
but why do I continue agi in the same way?" and the answer is simple,
because behavior does not change by understanding, behavior changes by practice,
repeat it with me, practice, your brain, we will always prefer your and mine,
but always prefer what is family, what is healthy, so one of the most important things that you
understand about behavior change, is that our brain does not ask, "this is healthy for me,
this will help me to be a better person, more mature, my best version,
you know what it is?" No, he will ask, "this is family for me, I recognize this,
we have already seen this moment behind, and this difference explains a huge amount of suffering
that we have, because we like to believe that people do basic things that are better for them,
many times, in fact, we do basic things in what we know, even when we are in the rain,
even when it is not the best for us, think of a person who grew up in a environment where she
needed to be free to receive love, she learns from being what being accepted depends on
how to respond to expectations of others, and then, years later, when she adopts,
she continues to say everything, she continues to be walking, she continues to put
the need of others above her, and when someone suggests that she starts to put
limits, that suggests absurd anxiety, because, because to thank this healthy person,
no, but to thank her is family, the brain recognizes that pattern, she already knows how it works,
she has already encouraged that path in the mind, thousands of times, now think of someone who
grew up in an unpredictable environment, where she never knew exactly how people would react,
how she was the love of her parents, her father would arrive to break everything in the house or not,
she needed to constantly try to love others, when this person enters a
reliable relationship, you know what happens, sometimes it is strange, it feels tedious,
it feels lack of intensity, who has already passed away here, without lack of that
emotional adrenaline, not because the healthy relationship is bad, but because the cause was
everything that she knew, it was what she wanted to family, and the brain costs a
lot of responsibility, this is a key point of this episode, and this also happens with
procrastination, many people say "I want to be more disciplined", but
they spend years working through depression, the last time, and then the brain
learns "Oh, I always give myself a way, I always resolve, I always can deliver
to the end of the stories", and then this pattern continues, because even if it is not
enough, it is known, and the problem is that many people interpret
difficulty as lack of courage, lack of discipline, lack of strength,
when in fact they are facing something more deep, they are trying to teach
the brain in a new way to work, and that there is a lot of regret,
Então, me segue lá.
Vão estar mais confiantes, mais seguras, mais motivadas. Só que na prática, muitas mudanças
importantes, elas produzem exatamente o contrário no início.
E aí, ela finalmente decide começar a colocar
limites.
do dia pensando, né? Será que eu fico rosa? Será que eu exagirei? Será que eu maguei
aquela pessoa?
muscular no início.
Talvez
você se identifica algum deles. Pega a cadê-te papel aí.
sentir vontade pra agir.
quando eu estiver me sentindo pronta, aí eu faço."
muitas vezes a desistir comportamente, tá?
ele a comparação.
eu sou o procrastinador, eu sou ansioso, eu sou impossível, eu sou inseguro.
Não me entende a mal,
