But no one knows who he really is and what he really does. Because in the underworld of Houston he is not a normal guy. There he is known as an expert in conflict solutions. Someone who contacts business partners or prison institutions, if they want to eliminate their problems discreetly and professionally. Or better said, people. In fact, the teacher with the glasses and the cats is considered the best contractor in the city. But what no one knows, this man is a chameleon. And in truth, he doesn't just feel one, but actually even a double double life. Unbelievable stories about life, death and everything in between. And now let's start straight into today's story. I have already mentioned a word in the intro, namely contract killer. And contract murders are in the USA, where we are today, which you probably already heard from Houston, has been a criminal phenomenon for a very, very long time. Although exact numbers are of course very difficult to convey, different studies and reports show that such facts really occur regularly and are carried out both by organized crime groups as well as by individual people. The practice of contract murder in the USA can be followed up to the time of the prohibition, which was followed up between 1920 and 1933. The notorious crime organizations used contract killers to fire rivals, informants or competitors. At the time, contract murders were often referred to as "mob hits". Today, and also this term will probably be about the path, you call the people who carry out something like that "hitmen". In the 1930s, there was even a kind of contract killer intermediary, the Murder Inc. It was a group that was really responsible for hundreds of contract murders. In the last decades, however, the image of the contract killers has changed a bit while in the 80s and 90s, the mafia played a big role. Today, many individual or smaller groups actively carry out contract murders out of financial or personal motives. And you can of course also imagine that digitalization and anonymity of the Internet have made the whole system easier. So you can definitely organize a lot easier contract murders today, which could have led to such cases. But, as I said, specific numbers about the frequency of contract murders in the USA are hard to determine, because according to the FBI, many murder cases, which may even be contract murders, are not recognized or classified as such, because that is not possible at all and because you don't even find it out. But there is a study by the National Institute of Justice from 2008, where it was estimated that about 2-3% of all murder cases in the USA were contract murders this year. That was in 2008 15,000 murders and that would mean that 300-450 of them were contract murders. Which I think is pretty crazy and when you think about it, that there is a pretty big amount of dark numbers there, I think that's pretty great. In the USA, contract killers are also punished as strictly as the outstanding perpetrators. So, if someone pays or invites a murder to begin with, it is legal as an equal perpetrator and can be fully responsible for the crime. In addition, threats are often still applied to murder because the planning and coordination of a contract murder itself is also considered a crime. And this kind of crime is of course also present in the million-dollar city of Houston, where we are today. And alone, where Houston has such a great skyline and is present today, except that maybe there are not as many pictures as otherwise, I have brought you a photo of Houston. In the middle you have a lot of modern skyscrapers, around them there are many houses and residential blocks and trees. And there, in this Texan million-dollar city, a man named Gary Johnson has lived since the beginning of the 1980s. Gary was born in 1947 in a rural area in Louisiana and first landed in the military after school. Later, he studied psychology and actually wanted to become a professor, but unfortunately it was not enough for him for the doctoral program. And also privately, you have to say, it does not run around that much with Gary. He was married three times and divorced three times. Many call him a single-ganger, because he is not so fond of and is a lot of people, but he is totally fine with it. He has, as we have already heard in the intro, his two cats, Goldfish Streich and that's enough for him. In addition, he can also do great things on his own, for example as a hobby gardener. In addition, he is very interested in what such exciting techniques are. He is a fan of Gandhi, he reads Shakespeare, knows all the documentation of the National Geographic and is very familiar with what classical music is. But what also stands out, when the conversation is linked to him, then he tries to avoid it. On the question of his job, he hardly answers. He works in staff, somewhere in the inner city. For Gary Johnson, this request means a turning point in his life. And you could actually think now, a studied psychologist, a cat lover, someone who meditates, who would like to have nothing to do with an "office" in life, but there is a later very pragmatic quote that explains his attitude to it. Quote, "Today, people can pay for it, that their TV is repaired and their trash is picked up. So why can't they pay me, a killer, that I should bring their life in order?" His own life, of course, he still wants to protect every price and that by putting a new identity in him. Gary Johnson is now called Mike Kane. And instead of shirt and leather jacket, he now wears jeans, washed upper parts and a chain with a silver head. In addition, he lets his beard grow and hair and wears an elaborate sunglasses. And in this, quasi, new clothes, he meets his client, Cathy Scott, in a bowling alley in Houston. Between colorful balls and beers, she gives him a photo of her husband and tells him about what kind of a cold and terrible person he is. And no half an hour later, Cathy really describes exactly where he is supposed to die. In the middle of the night after work, he always has to drive through that before violence and violence, that is, an area where shots are almost nothing unusual and a further death in their imagination hardly raises questions. Gary only listens to it for the first time. But at some point, he asks for money. His demand is $2,500. The first half in advance, the second half after the completion of the assignment. But Cathy Scott is mischievous. She doesn't want to pay more than $100. The rest, however, he will say it later, in the yellow pages of a public telephone cell. Instead of discussing, Gary Johnson remains relaxed and seems completely understandable, almost like a therapist. I agree with this deal, but at the end of the meeting, he asks a question that is as important to her as it is to him. Whether she is really sure that she wants her husband to die. And in exactly this moment, everything is decided. Cathy Scott doesn't give a damn, no doubt. Her answer sounds simple and catchy. Yes. A.K.A. Mike has his first official assignment. And that is, in the most true sense, the start-up. And maybe you can imagine that the possibility to engage an invisible, sensitive and reliable hitman is now being talked about quickly. From now on, such encounters and such requests for Gary Johnson will soon be addressed to everyday life. And what the deal is, he behaves even more discreetly than with everyone else. When people who engage him ask him how he is actually able to get people out of the way without any traces, he simply tells them which methods he can offer without problems and complications. He shoots, he stings, he stings, he drinks, he hangs, he roars, he burns, he jumps, he drives, he stings, he freaks, he frees, he digs, he disappears and much, much more. And more his clients don't even have to know for the first time. And it doesn't take long until he has the next specific orders on the table. He meets again as Mike Cain with a potential customer. In front of him is now Robert's holiday, a man who is full of anger and disappointment about his marriage. And he reaches the hitman just like his customers who want to take a picture of the woman he wants to get out of the way. In addition, there is a drawing that shows the progress and foundation of the common house. Because his plan is particularly perfidious. It should happen at home and look like suicide. Holiday explains that he had already tried to get his wife out of the way a few weeks ago and that she was admitted to psychiatry, but she was left out again quickly. And that's exactly what his chance is now. If she dies while he works on an oil platform, then he wouldn't only have a perfect alibi. He could also cash out money from insurance and from a possible million cost against the doctors who had supposedly failed and his mentally ill wife would have left her alone. Gary Johnson reacts without hesitation on what he hears. No clings, no clings. He just listens to and nods only when it has to be. And this time, he just calls his price. $2,500. The payment is immediately the rest after done work. And he asks if Holiday is really sure that his wife is going to die. He also doesn't hesitate for long, pulls $100 out of his pocket and pushes it over the table. And with that, the assignment is sealed. And in exactly this moment, it is clear that Gary Johnson is no more an invisible guy, no neighbor from next door. He is now really Mike Kane, an assignment killer who is ready to take over every job as long as the payment is right. And that is even faster because the demand for the talented Hitman is rising. A few weeks later, he has a meeting in a café with Catherine Beisel. She is looking for someone who is entitled to her married lover. To Gary's astonishment, he opens the early 30s that she doesn't want to kill herself, but only jealousy, maybe breaking her legs or throwing furniture in his office, throwing a few walls, something like that. Gary Johnson as always hears "Mexan too nicked and swiped, but at the end he gives his wife his phone number and explains to her that he is not the person who is harassing people and that she can like to report again when she is "really interested in something". After that, a few weeks pass, but then his phone rings. It is Catherine Beisel. She wants to see him again. And at the next meeting, she is suddenly very determined and says that she too is now of the opinion that a few hits or a little chaos in his office will no longer be enough and that her lover has to be seriously punished because his wife has no promise for her. Again, Gary Johnson asks if she really wants that and she says without thinking, yes. With every other assignment and every other request, Gary Johnson perfects his assignment and his offers for his customers. In the next months and even years, he also varies again and again what his outfits and names are to ensure that he does not accidentally become a Gary Johnson. Because so absurdly there are some people who are already per se who are even more bizarre than the others. In the mid-1990s, for example, he meets Petsy Haggard who is 61 years old very faithful and is also rooted in her kitchen community. But Petsy has her husband so much that she just ignores the kitchen of her own house to annoy him with it. But in the meantime, she is no longer enough for you. She is looking for someone who can finally get her husband out of the house. She even asks a girl from the neighborhood who used to have problems with the law because of drugs, if she could not know a professional killer and so the assignment with Johnson ends. He then begins to meet Petsy at the barbecue restaurant only once, but several times. And every meeting between the two is really extremely weird. This is why Petsy does not really trust her chosen assignment killer or maybe also has other thoughts. Because she is looking for him for hearing devices. With her own hands she passes him from top to bottom. She even checks his pockets at his most intimate places for the case that he could sign the conversation together. But she will never find anything and soon she develops an almost obsessive fascination for the hitman Johnson. One day Petsy also pretends that she and the assignment killer can simply have sex on the motorhome of their Cadillacs. Gary Johnson rejects it, but in fact he says yes. Petsy wants to shoot her husband as she calls him. But she pursues the assignment and final assignment as long as no one is supposed to be able to be as close to him as possible. But that is not the only particularly abstract meeting in the course of the years. In the context of the whole "Marc Habers" it may sound like classic entries about ex-partners and often from higher-ranked circles Gary Johnson also experiences the following. Sean Quinn, a teenager from Houston with an IQ of 131, calls Gary Johnson and hits him 7 Atari PC games in his hand. Very, very early on three dollar notes and two dollar 30 in Munich. And that is all he can bring up. He wants a classmate to disappear because he thinks the other boy would take away the girl that he likes. And even if he doesn't have the money he still asks Gary Johnson whether he is really sure and whether the assignment killer is aware of such a decision and the teenager stays with him that it would be the best if his rival dies. But Gary Johnson still has other candidates to do, for example William Peoples. He is a policeman from Houston with 11 years of experience, a really reliable and trustworthy director and that is the opinion that his ex-wife costs him too much. He has even murdered a policeman who is on probation and who he knows through his work as a policeman, but he is still jumping because he doesn't want to go to jail again. So William Peoples looks for an alternative and ends up with Johnson. And instead of the normal $2,500, the policeman offers $10,000. So this time it really happens. But not all assignments run in the forehand. A car dealer who doesn't agree that his wife is supposed to get half of her wealth turns into a neighbour on the other side of the street to let his girlfriend disappear. So a normal conversation about a garden rat. But he makes it clear that he will only pay that his wife is really dead. And then there is $20,000 for the neighbour. But the neighbour who has no idea about the assignment but has a total desire to invest the money or at least part of the money now looks for someone who can actually do that for him and meets with Gary Johnson. He explains to him the assignment, Johnson nods, hears to, asks if he is sure, plans every step in his head that his assignment is fulfilled, he even provides the desired photo evidence. But later the neighbour reports that the husband still doesn't want to pay the photo. And Gary Johnson, who is usually a quiet fan of meditation, has to go to the military for the first time. When the money is not there until tomorrow, the body of the killed will be taken. Of course, the neighbour doesn't want that and that's why he immediately runs to the car dealer who has given the entire assignment to get the money, but then there is a fight between the two of them. First feusts, then even balls. Other people from the neighbour call the police and when they enter, the assignment giver sits on the charge surface of his pickups and it stays curious. A bookkeeper meets Johnson to explain to him that she plans to hunt the house of her work giver in the air. He is a well-known surgeon from Houston and she wants him to be in the house during the explosion. As a payment, she offers Johnson no money, but a luxury motorboat. Then there would be a chemist who is convinced that his daughter is being treated badly by his ex-wife and that's why Johnson wants Johnson to be thrown in a abandoned water fountain. The two argue in the Denny's that it is a US American diner chain not enough to meet in a secret meeting but still public enough to be sure that nothing can happen there. Exactly how you know it from movies. By the way, the man doesn't want to be exchanged for names when meeting for the first time in public and that's why he has a secret code to recognize himself and he sees how he looks. If the contract giver sees a man who is keeping him for the hitman while eating pie, he will say "That looks like a good pie" and Gary Johnson should answer "Every pie is a good pie" And that's exactly how it happens and from now on this pie agreement for Gary Johnson is being used as a signature statement that you always use in your first contact. But you also have to say that not all the clients want to meet him in such a diner Some demand more exclusive places as well as the contract giver will be known in any way later. It's about Lin Kilroy who is 38 years old a big blonde ex-president of a big republican women organization married to Billy Kilroy the heir of a huge oil company. This marriage is just one year old as Lin Kilroy walks around in the evening with a close friend through the well-being Tanglewood and talks about how much her husband makes her angry. One time she even says she would think about brushing the floor of her shower with baby oil so that he gets out of it and hits his head. Of course, it would be an accident because she was afraid that her husband could get the care for her child and she would then try to get her out of it completely. And even with this contact it doesn't take long and you come to the point quickly. Lin Kilroy trusts Chris and tells him everything the habits of his husband the places he gets up to the security conditions he met the Hitman makes it incomprehensible that he didn't come to hit someone or to scare him and how serious it is. And should you now also ask why the whole room was full of wands and cables and why the state prosecutor has this tape and video recording at all? The answer is one of her best man. Her most talented, hidden agent. An undercover agent who is called "Cameleon" because he can slip into every favorite role and convince every single person with his talent. His name is Gary Johnson. Because Gary Johnson is not a real hitman but only one so he does as if. Maybe you have already thought about this because you have asked yourself why Lottie is talking about the facts today? Why is he always talking about the hits? I had to construct this and do it as if he didn't talk about it. But maybe you still have two or three of you believe it. I would be interested in that. I'm looking forward to that. But back to the story because that's what it's about. No matter if you know it or not it's incredible because there was never a single murder. None of this was really executed. In criminal cases Gary Johnson is considered one of the greatest actors of his generation. He is so talented that some say that he could be a good actor. But instead he landed in Houston at the National Assembly. I brought you a picture of Gary Johnson. You can see it in the gallery. You can see it with a shorter hair, a tie around the neck and a framed drawing in the camera. It definitely looks like a typical professor. If I look at his career up until then I might have left one or the other behind. Which would have been important but which I might have already told in which direction he could move later. Because after his army time he went directly to the police and became the representative of the sheriff's office. He worked here and there as a cover-police in Texas. But his job wasn't about murder and death but more about small delinquents such as Deepstahl or Betrug. Sometimes he even played a drug-dependent role in front of dealers. But this job doesn't fulfill him. His dream is as mentioned before a different one. So he actually studied psychology but he didn't become a doctor at first. He was the first to be admitted to the state prosecutor's office. At the beginning he was sitting very much on the desk. Later the whole thing gets a little more exciting. He can also actively collect evidence and detect stolen cars. And he does that well. But until then it is a relatively unobtrusive career. Only in 1986 when he is admitted to the state prosecutor's office he is shot. But luckily only in Spain and he is back to work after a week. But then the year 1989 comes when a man in Houston calls the police and explains that his old classmate Cathy Scott is looking for an attractive killer for her husband. The police report for special criminal in the state prosecutor's office. They ask if there is anyone who has experience with under cover. And at this moment Gary Johnson is sitting on his desk and only 10 minutes later his boss is standing with him and says "Gary, you are our killer." For Gary Johnson this is the moment when his entire career is in a completely new direction. Not like I told you before but in a different way. And you are aware at this time that he probably has quite good abilities in his view but nobody knows that this contract will mark the beginning of the most successful and legendary professional fake-office murder career of the Texan criminal history.
