2026 Trading Reset: Why Waiting Hurts More Than a Loss
17m 36s
The transcription emphasizes the critical importance of moving from hesitation to decisive action in trading as the new year begins. It highlights that procrastination costs more than losses, as inaction forfeits future opportunities while losses can be instructive. Listeners are urged to harness the psychological "fresh start effect" by setting clear goals and implementation intentions. Three immediate steps are prescribed: creating or reviewing a written trading plan to serve as a disciplined guide, running regular market scans to spot opportunities, and placing an initial trade to solidify commitment. The discussion underscores mindset development, suggesting daily affirmations to train the brain to focus on discipline and process through the reticular activating system. Ultimately, success is framed as the result of consistent, small actions—such as writing one trading rule or executing one trade—that build momentum, refine skills, and transform potential into tangible results over time.
If you're working hard but your portfolio isn't growing the way it should, if you're watching opportunities slip by while second guessing every trade, then you already know how exhausting it feels to spin your wheels. Every week you delay your leaving money on the table and your confidence takes another hit. I'm Louise Bedford, the money chick and the host of the Talking Trading Podcast. Each week I'll show you how to trade with structure, confidence and a plan that stacks the odds in your favour because profits don't wait but smart traders are ready when they come. And now it's time to get serious. The 2026 has begun and the market doesn't care if you're still in holiday mode. Every day you wait, every trade you delay is an opportunity gone and make no mistake. The cost of hesitation is bigger than the cost of losing. Losing teeters you, losing sharpens your system, losing forces you forward but hesitation it steals your future. It leaves you frozen while the market keeps moving without you. The start of a new year is the perfect moment to harness what psychologists call the fresh start effect. Research from Waterne School shows that people are far more motivated to pursue big goals at temporal landmarks like New Year's Day because these moments psychologically separate us from our past self and give us a clean slate by mentally closing the book on 2025. You create the freedom to reframe your identity and commit to being the kind of trader, investor or person who achieves extraordinary results. Pay that with the science of implementation intentions where you not only set goals but you also plan when, where and how you're lacked and you've got a powerful recipe for making 2026 your richest year ever. Treat this month as your launch pad for a wealthier, sharper, more purposeful version of yourself. The clock is ticking. The window of opportunity is never open for long and if you don't act this year and if you don't commit, if you don't step into the arena, someone else will take the profits that could have been yours. This is the year of urgency. The year of decisive action, the year you stop wasting and start trading like the trader that you were meant to be. Poet Mary Oliver once wrote, "Tell me, what is it that you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" It's beautiful and inspiring that for me I bring it down to the day that is in front of me. The thing that stops me from procrastinating is asking, "What do I plan to do with my one wild and precious morning?" Because that's where mastery is forged. Not in vague dreams but in what you actually do today. Every winning streak begins with one trade. Every fortune begins with one deposit. Every system begins with one plan. The question isn't, "Where am I now?" The question is, "Am I moving forward?" You see, doing nothing builds nothing. Doing something, even the smallest something changes everything. And if someone shared this podcast with you, just know that this means that they know you have the potential to do beautifully in the markets. And all you need is just a little bit more education so that you can springboard into being an effective trader. As a listener of this podcast, I know something about you. I know that you have an inquiring mind and that you're looking to refine your age in the markets and that you're determined to make a better future for yourself. And I love that. And I want you to know that I'm in your corner. Stick around and it will all become clear. Now, let's get practical. You want to make 2026 the year you move forward. So there are three urgent things that you must do today. Not next week, not next month, but today. Number one, write your trading plan. You see, if it's still in your head, it doesn't count. A written trading plan is your compass. Without it, you're wandering blind. Decides your entry rules, your exits, your position sizing and your stop losses in black and white. Because when the market heats up, your emotions will betray you, but your trading plan won't. And if you don't have this nailed yet, then you need to pick up my free trading plan template from my website tradinggame.com.au. Just register your details and I'll send it to you straight away. And even if you have your trading plan written down, now is the time to review it. And make sure it fits with your goals and everything that you're aspiring to be for the coming year. Number two, the second thing that you must do today. If you already have a scan, then run your scan. Opportunities are flashing up right now. And every day you skip scanning, you're leaving potential profits on the table. So download your data, run your scans and review your watch list. I even run scans if I don't have money to invest because I'm fully invested. And it's important that you don't get out of the habit of running your scans during this time because you want to keep everything as routine as possible. The market rewards preparation, not procrastination. And if you don't know what I'm talking about and you don't know what a scan is, it's a way of being able to pop a statement into your computer package that looks at your charts and it produces the results according to that statement. So you might want to see shares above their moving average on heavy relative volume, for example. I think you probably need to check out my trading game mental program pro because I actually give you my own personal scans. So if you want to know more, just email me and we can get the ball rolling. So my personal email address and it doesn't go to anybody else, I don't have a PA, it's not something that gets farmed out. My email address is Louise at tradinggame.com.au. And number three, if you haven't already done so, place your first trade for the year that fulfills your trading rules. It doesn't have to be big but it has to be real. That first trade sets the tone for your year. It tells your brain I'm a trader and I'm in the game. Waiting for perfect only guarantees that you'll be late. Volume is coming back into the market now. The Christmas Lull is over and it's time to look actively for your next opportunity. And if it's not today that you place that trade, then work out under what characteristics will you place that trade? Waiting to trade, it's like waiting to plant a tree. A year from now, you'll wish you had a starter today. The best traders, they don't wait for perfect conditions. They plant now and they grow into the market. Now, let me paint you a picture. Imagine there are two traders both starting in 2026 at exactly the same place, the same market, the same opportunities, the same tools at their fingertips. Trader A hesitates. They keep telling themselves, "I'll start when I have more time or when I have more money or when the conditions are perfect." They dabble but they don't commit. Now fast forward. By December 2026, they've got the same balance in their account. That Trader A has the same level of skill and the same frustration because nothing has grown. Another year has just slipped through their fingers. But imagine an alternative trader. Trader B, they act and they act now. They start small. They place their first trade early in the year, maybe just with a modest position. And they make mistakes of
Of course they do, but they learn. They write things down. They refine their plan. Every scan sharpens their eye. Every trade builds their discipline and every loss becomes a teacher. And by December 2026, Trader B is unrecognizable. Their account is bigger, their confidence is higher, and most importantly their habits are locked in. Both traders, Trader A and Trader B had the same opportunities. The difference wasn't knowledge or money or luck. The difference was action. So as you listen right now, you need to ask yourself, am I Trader A who waits? Or am I Trader B who moves? Because by the time the year ends, your answer will be written all over your results. And here's something for you to plan for as a new habit. Have you ever noticed that once you decide to buy a certain car, you suddenly start seeing that car everywhere. That is your reticular activating system at work. Some people call it the RIS or the RAS, but it's a tiny little bundle of nerves at the base of your brain stem and it acts as an internal filter. Out of the millions of sensory inputs that you receive every second, it decides what is important. And it brings it forward to your conscious awareness. Now for Traders, this is powerful. The reticular activating system will notice whenever you've trained it to take notice. If you wake up focusing on fear or losses or all of the things that could go wrong, your brain will scan the markets for danger. But if you focus on discipline and process and opportunity, your RAS will lock into those instead. You see, it's not about ignoring risks. It's about deliberately choosing what gets priority in your mental landscape. That's why you need to study yourself. Really careful things in the morning. Your morning matters. Those words become instructions for your reticular activating system and they prime your mind to seek evidence that supports them. So instead of stumbling into the day on autopilot, make it a conscious ritual. This is what I do and it has really stood me in good stead. Here are three simple phrases that every trader can use to direct their reticular activating system. So here's the statement. Number one, today I'm going to trade my plan with discipline. Now this tends to keep your attention on the process over impulse. I don't know about you, but I can definitely be impulsive and I have to curb that as a trader to trade my best. So if I say to myself first thing, today I'm going to trade my plan with discipline, then that seems to work miracles for me. Number two, today I will stay calm and patient. I can handle anything that comes my way. Now it's a beautiful statement and you will have to say it to yourself many times before you believe it. But what it does is it primes your brain to spot quality rather than noise. It reinforces resilience and it gives you the boost you need to know that you're in the driver's seat. Now here's my third statement. Today I'm going to think like a professional trader. This sharpens your identity. It reminds your reticular activating system to look for behaviors that match. And if you repeat these statements daily, you're not just saying the words. You're training your brain to filter the markets in your favour. And little by little, your reticular activating system will learn what to highlight and what to ignore and it's going to make you sharper and calmer and more consistent at the screen. So let's summarize this. Here's what I want you to do today. And you can choose from this list. Firstly, place that trade, that first trade according to your own specific rules if the markets qualify. Write that first rule in your trading plan. That's another option, something that you can do immediately. You could rum that first scan, start, start small, but start. You could choose to contact somebody who can help you get one step closer towards your goals. You could choose to write your plan of attack in your morning journal. Any of these things are going to drive your trading one step further. And that's what I want for you. Before this episode ends, I want you to take five minutes today to lock in momentum while the motivation is high. Don't overthink it. Just act. Write the very first line of your trading plan even if it is as simple as I will risk no more than 1% per trade. Or set up a scan and save it so that tomorrow you can run it with a single click. Break whatever that goal is down to the tiniest, smallest component so that it doesn't seem like a big, nebulous step. You've only got a tiny little step to make. And you know what that step will be. If you're ready, place one small trade. Break that seal and remind yourself that you're a trader in the game, not just a spectator. You see tiny steps compound into mastery. But only if you take them now. Because if you can keep your cool when the market runs hot, if you can meet profits and losses with discipline and focus, if you can follow your trading plan with consistency, then the trading world is yours. Think back on 2025. Think how far you've come. The lessons you've learned, the habits you've built. And now imagine 2026. The milestones, the goals, the trade-et you want to become. And remember Mary Oliver's line, not as a distant lofty thought, but as a challenge for today. Tell me, what is it that you plan to do with your one wild and precious morning? The market isn't waiting. The opportunities aren't waiting. The time is now. So start and don't stop. And until the very next episode of Talking Trading. Happy trading.
