2026 Third Base Preview! Rankings, Strategy, Draft Prep Guide (2/11 Fantasy Baseball Podcast)

The podcast previews the third base position for the 2026 fantasy baseball season, highlighting it as a critical area of concern due to a severe lack of depth. The hosts note that after the elite tier—led by the consistent, top-five pick José Ramírez and the powerful but potentially regressing Junior Caminero—there is a steep decline in reliable talent. This makes third base a priority in drafts, where managers are advised to invest an early pick to secure a high-end option like Austin Riley or Elly De La Cruz to avoid being cornered into starting lower-tier players. The discussion points out specific risks, including Caminero's adjustment to a less hitter-friendly home ballpark, the age and volatility of some veterans, and a poor prospect pipeline. Overall, the position is characterized as "feast or famine," requiring proactive draft strategy to secure one of the few dependable starters.
Welcome to the fantasy baseball today podcast from CBS Sports Got a fantasy question email fantasy baseball at CBSi.com Get ready to win your league Now here's Frank Scott and Chris Matt welcome into fantasy baseball today on Wednesday February 11th. I am Frank Stanford joined by Scott White and Chris towers today on the show It is our 2026 third base preview. We'll do an overview of the position strategy deep dives on specific players sleepers breakouts Buts and ADP analysis Chris I know that you're under the weather here kid, but this is your flu game So we appreciate you being here. I'm here. I'm putting the team on my back. I got my my fluid some good good We'll see I might pass out mid pot That would be a I think a pretty interesting podcast not that we're rooting for or anything Let's take a macro look at third base here. Jose Ramirez is awesome And then what we did get some high-end performances last season according to the fan graphs player-rater Sixth third baseman with 17 plus dollars provided in a 12 team road or categories league last season And then a fill off a cliff the 7th third baseman was Ernie Clement and he provided five dollars of value in head to Point's leagues it was similar we had J Ram with 600 plus fantasy points Caminaro with 500 plus Six names with 400 plus and then Miguel Vargas was your 7th third baseman in total head to head point scored projecting forward we do get Austin Riley back Are you Daniel Suarez and Cincinnati? So that seems nice, but third base looks like a position that is Seriously lacking high-end depth Scott your thoughts This is the priority position on draft day. This is the one that you're most likely to get Cornered out of and regret not making an investment sooner It's one that just in the limited amount of drafting. I've done so far I've come to realize yeah, it's worth stretching a little bit to get a player that I actually feel good about Because you know you say it's it's light on high-end options. I don't know that I'd characterize it quite that way like Depending where Depending what you say high-end is, but I think High-end is really all third base offers and then once they're gone There's nothing. Yeah, there's nothing so it's You can either be good there or you can be bad there and I would it's a big gap between the two. I would much rather be good Um, and I think that's especially hard to do in a a points league because so many of the goods stand out third baseman are More attuned to two categories play they have plate discipline issues Austin Riley who you know questionable how high-end even is Jazz-Baron Roto Yep, yep. I'd say it's better Roto So You know it's it's tough it but it's Because it's tough that makes it worth Paying up for like that is this is kind of going to be the position. I game plan around So so one bit of research I was doing earlier today that I wanted to highlight here um And I was researching it for my catcher preview, but it's relevant to third base I looked at the fan graph player rator and one thing they have is you can You can break out by category This player was worth four dollars and runs five dollars and home runs, etc But they also have part of their value system is how much was this player worth In addition to the positional adjustment so traditionally catchers get the biggest positional adjustment than second base um if you strip out the positional adjustment for Every player you just take what they did their raw production There were Sixth third baseman in the top 100 hitters There were I think nine or eleven catchers In the top 100 There were more It's and that's just taking their production at face value not giving them the bump for being a catcher That's pretty bad. That's a bad sign for third base. It was the top six Jose Ramirez junior Kaminara Hanyu Suarez many Machado jazz chism and my co Garcia. They were all top 45 hitters Uh Ernie Clement was the next best as Frank mentioned. He was the hundred and seventh hitter It was so feast or famine last season now that's you know Alex Braggman was better You know than than that he just missed a lot of time. I think that Chapman missed a little bit of time like By the miss Riley missed time. Yeah like no, we'll be marty. Marty was good when he played but he missed a lot of time too But even then it's um look catchers missed time too So it's Last year is not going to be the same but Third bases I think once you account for Everything third base is probably the weakest position in fantasy this year And I usually include a section on the bottom prospects of note third base and not really not really much there I mean there are short stops My top 100 Jacob Rimer is my top 100 There will be some that move to fit like Colt Emerson 18 Miller like maybe they move to third base of short stops Like Basically two thirds of all in field prospects are short stops So you have to imagine some of those are going to wind up at third base in the long run But yeah having written Having done those offseason by position prospect rankings for at least a dozen years at this point I can't recall a time an infield positions prospect trajectory was so poor. I mean Jacob Rimer Won't be on every top 100 list And yet he was far and away at the top third base prospect Yeah, just look if you're just going by what they played most in the miners last year You have 23 short stops in your top 100 you have two third baseman Who's the other one? That's a good question. Oh, you're welcome. Oh, come on. Oh, come on. Oh, say yeah, that's That's obviously a copy is a third baseman at some sites not on CBS I've got we've got some questions about that. I that's that's above my pay grade Yeah, I don't know about that Yeah, so yes some people have asked about that but worth mentioning again More commie does have third base eligibility on some sites but not on CBS here Let's talk a little third base strategy If you have the fourth or fifth pick congrats you get Jose Ramirez if not Scott how do you attack third basis here? Well, it's I have a general plan as I already laid out the specifics are still It's still a work in progress. I have come to like the idea of taking junior commonero more and more in round two That's obviously where you have to take them But you know if I'm picking early in round two, I don't think I'm going to reach that early for him I like the value of Austin Riley because I am a brave fan No, no, I'm not a braise fan, but just looking at it and I am a braise fan but just looking at it analytically like I would assess any player for any team I think I think there are a lot of positives there I think he's a good bounce back candidate and I think he's being undervalued in drafts and I think obviously he's a presents a rare opportunity for For high-end production at this position So he's one I tend to target AOA Hennios Juarez now that he's signed with the Reds. I'm happy with the value there I used to fall back on ESOQ Peretta's like he was probably my prime target because Yeah, he missed the time with the hamstring injury last year, but before that it worked out exactly like I hoped it would he was basically Alex Bregman In Houston like the last couple years Alex Bregman sent spent in Houston I'm not talking about the MVP caliber season since he had earlier, but Alex Bregman's last couple years in Houston ESOQ Peretta is with those those extreme pull tendencies at that Park with the short porch and left He basically looked like Bregman did his last couple years in Houston and that was certainly a starting caliber third-base Men first of fantasy, but the glut of infielders there the fact the Astros haven't been able to move Christian Walker this off season Like I think they wanted to and now they're talking about maybe moving ESOQ Peretta's out And to trade himself which you know who knows where he goes. It's unlikely the environment would be as favorable to him as Houston though So I'm not out on ESOQ Peretta's but There needs we need to reach a decision point soon with him because It's it's at least uncomfortable drafting him right now not knowing what is the meaty future is and one of the Locations that would have been a nice landing spot for ESOQ Peretta's the Boston Red Sox they traded for Caleb Durban So it does not seem like that trade will be happening. Chris do you have an intentional strategy at third base? I Think I'd prefer to follow Scott and be a little more aggressive on the position, but Look you can't guarantee that like how many third baseman do you actually feel really comfortable starting? I guess That's kind of a semantic question because it depends on how you define really comfortable, but I have probably seven for me Yeah, I don't really know what to make of Jordan Westberg at this point I'm obviously a little wary of Alex Bregman ESOQ Peretta's is so like it might just be seven that I feel good about starting and even then It's not hard to poke holes in a euheniosaurus You know he is 35 years old. It's a very extremely volatile skill set I think I'm a little less optimistic about Riley. I think there are some cracks in the armor showing up but I would include him in that group of confident starters, but still that leaves roughly half your league where You may not have a third baseman you feel confident in so I do think You know pushing up Mani Machado pushing up Junior Common Arrow Austin Riley you any of these guys I think does make sense. Yeah. Yeah I actually really like my Cougar Sia, but even him and this is something I'm usually not comfortable doing is Buying a player coming off that career year, but every time I dive in it's I really like everything I see in the underlying data But you've got to use a sixth round pick on Garcia So it is a pretty big price tag for someone who's only done it one year So I do realize that if I miss out on him I'm kind of open to a euheniosuarez I think in a few early drafts I've done so far the ultimate fallback. I keep winding up with Matt Chapman It's not a sexy pick, but I think it's like a high floor guy and Battling injury last year, but when he played he was still pretty good. So it's not great But those are some of the names that I've been Winding up with early on here, you know who's probably my ultimate fallback option And I know we're gonna get into the individual players here soon But I I need to get him more On the tip of my tongue. I need to get a more on the tip of my tongue because I love him and he might be the savior of this position Let's say it all all on three. Let's say it one two three Cosmo, I just said the last name See, it's not on the tip of my tongue You're never gonna get there because we got the first name first Kazuma Akimoto. Yeah, that's the guy. Yep, we're all pretty excited about Okamoto this season if you're playing a league with a corner infield spot Probably using a first basement I would imagine, but some decent options later on we just mentioned Okamoto Royce Lewis maybe could finally stay healthy probably not who knows Addison Barger depending on who you ask and now with this news of Anthony Santander We'll talk about that later on Seems like there's a little bit more runway for him to be an everyday player So uh kind of talking myself back into Addison Barger before we hit the break Subscribe to the FBT newsletter if you haven't already cbsports.com slash newsletters and like this video subscribe on youtube if you haven't already turn on that notification bell We went live earlier today to discuss Shwellenbach and lendore injury updates. I get that pictures and catchers Supposed to be a fun time for us like yay baseballs back spring training starting Everybody's hurt. So we're gonna continue to get a lot more injuries throughout the course of Spring training here leading up to the start of the season Let's take that break and we'll be back right after this Welcome back in fantasy baseball today. Let's get into third base ADP We're using fantasy pros ADP which is an aggregate of six different sources so far cbs Yahoo NFBC Fantracks RT sports and ESPN as always subject to change Let's begin with the face of the position the model of consistency Jose Ramirez who has an ADP of 5.4 likely a top five or six pick and all drafts Regardless of league format. It does not matter. He's 33 years old He's getting up there, but he's still performing at an elite level one of the most consistent players in fantasy Has finished as a top six overall player in four of the past five years has gone 30 40 in back-to-back seasons 44 steals yet last year a career high for Jose Ramirez played discipline remain stellar And he's incredibly durable has played 152 plus games five years in a row. Scott the only question here is how early Do you take Jose Ramirez? Fifth You can make a case for fourth And you know in points leagues. I would say fourth because I want to have Bobby Whitton my top five for points leagues But in in roto and categories leagues. It's in some order Aaron judge show heo tani bobby Whitt And then I put one so to ahead of Jose Ramirez But if you want to flip those two and you know based on what I just laid out I'm kind of want to flip those two right now. It'd be nice to secure Third base that early But obviously so does awesome too So close call between those two so does younger I guess that's the only concern I I wouldn't consider it a major concern because they're No signs of a drop off here for Jose Ramirez, but he isn't his mid 30s. So you know If he did drop off suddenly it wouldn't be the shock of the century But I don't think I don't think it's a realistic fear. I don't I don't think it's a reasonable fear to have Let's say that going into your draft if if you're picking five or maybe if you're picking four Just take Jose Ramirez and let everybody else ring their hands over this Hand ring inducing position I mentioned the consistency Jose Ramirez is batting average between 279 and 283 four years in a row OPS between 863 and 872 two years in a row So again, just incredibly consistent Annoying that the RBI came down to 85 last season. It's been 85 or less two of the last three years not really something that's in his control and Guardians lineup might not be great again this year. So I guess you could worry a little bit about that But it's again, it's not really in his control and just two years ago 114 runs 118 RBI and I like that lineup was great either so something that kind of fluctuates and it feels like again It's kind of out of Jose Ramirez's control. I'll ask the format question for most of these players But honestly, he's just a top five player regardless of format. So Doesn't matter just draft with confidence. Jose Ramirez. We have two names in the second round junior Kevin arrow at 17.6 I Come in arrow. I think you should play the full song for an episode like this I'm trying to keep the pod under an hour 40 today. Oh, yes. Yeah, it's probably not gonna happen But uh, this is a reward at the end make it a reward for people who stuck with the whole thing You know what's got. I think maybe I still have the video loaded up. I do it's an it's a minute and 17 seconds So we will end today's show with the junior Kevin arrow song The others the other name in the second round by the way, uh, Jazzym junior 22.8 We spoke about him on yesterday's podcast. You can use him at second. You can use him at third Two positions. You want to use him at it does give you some flexibility there Let's talk about Caminero the kid. He did it actually got off to a really slow start last season And then flipped everything in late May he started working with one of his hitting coaches from the Dominican Republic And he wound up hitting 45 homers 110 RBI just a massive season But there is an element of unknown here as the rays are moving from Steinbrunner field uh, where Caminero hit very well last season Back to tropicana field which isn't objectively worse place to hit uh, it's a small sample size Caminero has only played 19 games in the trop where he has hit 260 with a 747 opus Chris does this worry you as much as it does me. I don't know if worry is the right word I think it is a An unknowable factor in trying to project junior Caminero that injects a lot of volatility in his profile I think it would be a mistake There is this thing where we've had what three teams in the last five years. We've had to play at minor league parks And people are like yeah, but he plays in minor league park and it's like As if it's a little league park. They can make minor league parks as big as they want Like Albuquerque Go look up the dimensions of Albuquerque. It's like 430 to center field, but there's like a big circle In the middle of it. It's bizarre, but that is one of the best hitters parts a mile and a half above One of the best hitters parks in baseball at any level because of the so like I I hate the like who's a little league park. Yeah, because like no, that's a professional baseball They're allowed to make like it has the same fences as Yankee Stadium Which is also the place park. Oh no, it's a good place to hit But I want to make it clear that We are not at least I am not saying that he is like a Steinbrenner field merchant I think that's what the kids say when they're trying to call someone flage fraudulent I think he's a really good hitter Yeah, but Tropicana field is just a weird place to hit It is generally a bad place to hit, but that is not true for everyone in equal regards. He sucked Prince was really good at Tropicana field he had his 30-homer season there William Domes Barely looked like a major league hitter when he was playing half his games Tropicana field He just couldn't see the ball there. So that's what we don't know the sample size 19 games at the Tropicana field where he had a 750 op Yes, I don't care. That tells me nothing 19 games is is nothing and he was also super young when he played those games He was yeah But I don't know like that that's just the the long and short of it I just don't know what kind of effect it's going to have on junior Kaminner my assumption is Two one. He's not a 45-homer guy like just that is not the baseline unless he is a Hall of Famer right like just Aaron Judge doesn't hit 45-homers every season sometimes he gets hurt Common arrow might be a 45-homer guy. I think he certainly has that skills But I think you expect some regression there and so you probably project it more like 37-38 homers And the batting average despite making a lot of contact. He doesn't have a great batting average skill set 255 expected batting average last season again despite 45 homers so There is some risk that junior Kaminnero hits 250 with 32 homers this season and 85 RBI and is just Pretty good but not dominant and that would be a big disappointment at his price So I don't necessarily think I'm going to draft a ton of junior Kaminnero at his price um But I think it's perfectly fine if you want to I think I think this thing is overblown I've got to be honest. I don't want to get sucked into it because sometimes I get sucked into the narrative when it becomes so commonplace This happened with Robert Suarez last year. I was I was holding out You know Robert Suarez. Okay. Yeah. He's he's not Totally bankable. There are reasons for concern here, but people were Writing him off completely as the potteries closer and people It was ridiculous. No, but not that anybody's writing common arrow off completely, but it's the same thing like it's just Okay, this was At a prospect at the very top of the rankings if not number one the number two or number three who impacted the ball As hard as any minor leager and he comes up as a 21-year-old his 45 home runs. I think he's Wasn't he like the youngest player to hit that many or In the something like that something like that he's he's set He he did something historic His power output was historic for his age And if you look at the split home in a way, you know the home run production was even that's what you expect to improve the most from playing in A a homer friendly ballpark is oh You know look at his teammate yondi Diaz he hit way more of his home runs at Steinberger field than he did on the road Common arrow it was even it was dead even actually one more on the road So yes, there was a gap in batting average, but that's An OPS 200 points of OPS when I was a hundred points. The OPS was built into the batting average though Yeah, but that matter something that's that that is not something I would it that is not a park That is designed for batting air like that to that narrative just doesn't make sense It is true that he hit for a higher batting average at home, but I don't see why home would have made him hit for a higher batting After that particular home. I would just say I don't think it makes sense to express Confidence at what the impact of tropic anaphyl will be either way It's possible he'll have no effects from it But he might be a willy-adamist type who just struggles to hit there We have a little bit of a sample there. It's not a big sample. It's not a microscopic sample either I think it's pretty that's kind of a pretty good. I think he got almost two out of that. He got almost two out of that's on the year Right, but I think he only played he got like 80 played appearances at Tropical. Yeah, he has only 19 games played in his career in chop in the trop Which is weird If he got 200 played appearances trying to figure out the math there now. I'm now now you guys have me doubting it I'm gonna look pretty sure I look this up many times and that's what it was, but I don't want to doubt the player Kevin arrow. I just I just got a lot more games on the road two years ago Yeah, I don't want to doubt the player because again, it's like 22 year old who just did something historic I think he's it makes sense that he's a second round pick. I just wished that there was not this Factor that was involved here. What that we just don't know about for a second round pick It's almost like we're holding his success against him. It's not like he came out of nowhere and was this creation of Steinburner Field right and I don't I I explicitly said the opposite of that um, I'm not just about you. I'm talking about people who pushed this idea right But for me, yeah, I mean it's just it's an unknown variable. That's that's it I mean again, I'm not doubting the player. I think he's really good and he very well could just have a similar season and make me look very foolish and Yeah, it's just I don't want to use a second round pick on a guy that I have this mystery that I can't no going into this if he's I think part of it for me is just If he's only a 32 homer guy, which I think is on the low end of expectations, but is within the realm possibility He doesn't do enough else 265 with 38 home runs as he worth a mid to late second round pick Yeah, yeah, probably I think it's like He's probably not exactly worth it, you know, but That happens you know, it's not a huge bust, you know, missing out on a couple dollars. That's probably fine When you guys take him an arrow or jazz because that is a decision that people might have to make They're both second round picks in 80 p Common error. Yep. Uh, better in headhead points or uh, roto category lease roto I think roto because he walks so infrequently, but part of my optimism for him is you know being a young hitter who impacts the ball Among the top 10% in the league Strugout less than 20% at the time. He actually has pretty good contact skills. So slightly better in roto But the the strikeout rate is helping him at points after jazz we have uh, just one name in the third round old reliable many machado with an 80 p of 29.6. He is 33 years old, but still a consistent producer has finished as a top 40 overall player two years in a row Pretty similar season each of the last two years as well right at a 275 batting average 27 to 29 homers 95 to 105 rbi 11 to 14 steals still hits the ball as hard as anybody There are some slight warning signs here and some of the underlying plate discipline stuff and uh, he did struggle over the final two months of the season I didn't see anything about a injury or anything he was dealing with so it just it could just be a thing that happens throughout the baseball season I can't say that I am personally excited to take machado in the third round, but I think it'll probably just turn out to be a fine pick I think fine is the perfect word for it Yeah, I don't love the value. I mean, he's another one of these early round mainstays. We talked about a few of these guys at first base just kind of gradually declining To the point that I I think it's mainly position scarcity that's pushing him into round three position scarcity and familiarity Uh, and I just There are generally directions. I'd rather go in round three You know, maybe if I get If I have a few more drafts where I get burned at third base because I didn't want to take one earlier I'll start to open up to the idea of taking machado there more But I look at machado in round three or Austin Riley in round six what six yeah And sometimes even slips later than that Um, and I definitely prefer Riley in a vacuum machado versus those first baseman. We've talked a lot about uh, devours and Olsen and Bryce Harper I would take machado still over those guys straight up. I don't know if you guys disagree That's not how I rank them. I think there's a harder cap on machado ceiling Uh, well some of those guys I you know, I'm thinking devours and Olsen in particular. Uh, I think I think could be considerably better than they were last year even though they were fine last year I think they could be much better. They're They've shown it in the not too distant past. Well, I don't think machado has much chance of recapturing that So I would prefer those guys in a vacuum but with the added context of position scarcity it gets closer Yeah, uh format for machado better in categories or head Ted points I think this one's close. I maybe slightly into rodo, but I don't have a I think it might be slightly better in rodo. He doesn't walk much doesn't strike out much either. It's around 20 percent And you get your 10 to 15 steals from three point one fantasy points for him He's probably just fine in both formats. I don't know that he's considerably better in either one After machado you have two names in the sixth round range of a 12 team league Austin Riley would an 80 80 P of 66 and my Cal Garcia at 72.8 so Austin Riley I think kind of a confusing evaluation here. He has had two down years in a row Both have been cut short by injury Last year he underwent core surgery in August expected to be fully ready for spring training and the start of the season He still hits the ball as hard as anyone in what should be a great braves line up if we can keep these guys on the field But the play discipline has been slipping sub 800 OPS two years in a row So what we need him to prove that he could stay healthy and get back to the hitter that he was back in 2023 We just haven't seen that lately. So uh, it's got I think I know your answer, but Do you take a shot on Riley in the sixth round of 80 P Yeah, I have him ranked ahead of consensus You know NFBC he's He's he's going even like around later than this So um particularly in that format we're seeing his value surprised we're seeing widespread skepticism over him It is two bad years in a row but His 2024 Was similar to who Leo Rodriguez is 2024 And that if you just look at the final stat line, it's like oh this was a misstep for this guy, but You know it's a player that generally starts slow and heats up mid season and It because it was cut off early by injury it didn't get a chance for the numbers to fully normalize But you look at Austin Riley's Final Let me see if I can find the right okay final 57 games. Let's use that Of 2024 before he got injured then 292 batting average 16 homers 942 ops Which would be harder to okay, maybe just In point Our arbitrary endpoints you're you're you're cherry picking the stats there Except you look at the underlying numbers from that 2024 season He's still hit the ball just as hard you didn't see a big increase in strike outrate like last year Like he looked like the same player. So I'm not even really counting 2024 as part of the trend I think it was just an unfortunate cutoff with that injury prevented his numbers and from normalizing Remember he had that weird situation where the braves he had no bleak injury In May and the braves just never put him on the iL But he ended up missing like 15 days Was that in 2024 was this 24 it was mark may of 2024 Oblig injuries are very difficult to come back from We have no idea How serious that one was but it was serious enough to cost him two weeks of action So it's reasonable to think There were some lingering effects I would be more on board like I was totally on board with that give Austin rally amoligan for last year And then 2025 happens and he's just yeah Not really good at any point Yeah, and that's the thing I'm struggling with like he had pretty good April yes 831 op s but even that was like a 31% strikeout rate Where he sum out how ran a 308 batting average so it's like even that's kind of a little flooky Yeah, I think I think they're I think he legitimately slumped and maybe the um, you know particularly as you get later into the year and the numbers get worse and worse that injury that Eventually ended up sidelineing it for the year may have been a contributing factor but he is He is a problem particularly He is a player who particularly if you look back early in his career he had a problem With swinging at the wrong pitches and he got better at it and maybe last year You know different hitting coached for for the first time in his career He fell back into some bad habits, but he's still impacted the ball very well Um, he still had a major injury that kind of turned things upside down on him um If the strikeout rate remains close to 30% like it was last year Okay, that's going to be a problem, but We don't have a big sample of that and we have a much bigger sample of him being a 25% strikeout guy and considering he's 28 years old I don't think there's a lot of decline happening here. So I remain optimistic Uh, you know, obviously time will tell if he's striking out A ton in April maybe that's going to look like a miss right away I don't know we could watch in spring trainings. He how he's doing in terms of of making contact, but I think uh I think if you're Keying in on that strikeout rate that that one little misstep last year As the reason to to say Austin Riley Is uh declining early here premature decline not going to be the same anymore I think that's making too much of too little it's the bottom line I lean towards wanting to buy back in on the bounce back here and just kind of doing that blindly with I guess a lot of the braves this season It's also the lowest we've been able to draft Austin Riley since 2021 like his ADP the past couple of years is Consistently in the second round now we're getting him in the sixth round and rightfully so for all the reasons that we just talked about But again, it's like would we really be that surprise if Austin Riley is a second or third round pick again next year like no probably not But uh, yeah, there's a little sliver of doubt of whether or not he's still that hitter we saw back in 2023 For Austin Riley the format much better in categories is because the plate discipline is not great right yes Yeah, big difference there for him. Let's talk about my killer. See you one of the biggest breakouts last season his preseason ADP was 223 he finished 61st overall in categories leagues He was the fifth best third baseman in total head to head points He improved dramatically as a hitter he always hit the ball hard He dropped the ground ball right last year increased the pulled air rate He has strong plate discipline. He's entering his age 26 season and on top of that They're pulling the walls in in in cough and stadium which we've talked about a lot this off season So Chris I mentioned this earlier. I don't usually like buying off of the career year, but I really like a lot of the underlying data here I think there's a chance he could even take another step forward. Are you buying my cougar see you? Um, I think the the changes to the ballpark Help overcome what what I would probably project to be a little bit of regression here because he did One just had the career best year by far. I mean he had an 800 OPS coming off a 613 OPS the previous year And two he did overperform his expected stats a little bit and You know the thing that's worth keeping in mind in any discussion about changing Dimensions in a ballpark is Yes, he might hit a few more homers He probably loses Some doubles and triples and singles because the outfielders have less ground to cover right so I don't think you can just look at it and say aha It's all positive there there are always tradebacks in life and I think that's true in this scenario so You know that that has been coffin stadium's been a very good ballpark for batting average He was a standout there 286 last season Underlying stats suggest maybe he got a little lucky maybe more like 276 Um, you know, maybe he's more like a 15-homer guy. I can see it both ways. I Do have him ranked ahead of Austin Riley. I have him ranked 75th overall. So I think that's a little bit ahead of um His ADP and so I'm yeah, it's right around his NFBC ADP at least so I'm more likely to draft my Cal Garcia than Austin Riley, but I'm not necessarily like beating down the door for it. I think if last season was A career year for my Cal Garcia That wouldn't surprise me on the other hand There does seem to be plenty of room for stolen base regression Which matters a lot in road elites he went from 37 steals two caught stealing's in 2024. Well, that was never going to sustain But 23 and nine caught stealing's that's also probably unsustainable So I do think you can bump him up a little bit in stolen bases. Maybe he gets back to 30 um Really good player just not necessarily sure I'm a huge fan of my Cal Garcia this year and I wonder about his spot in the lineup too if he's their lead off hit I think perhaps I could lead to him stealing more bases as well. Maybe being a little bit more aggressive there at the top of the lineup Because last year he kind of started lower and then slowly moved up the lineup But now expected to be the lead off hitter. I wrote this down as a comp I kind of think Nico Horner but with double the power basically so You know 15 homers good batting average good run scored and probably around 30 steals and I think I'd be a pretty good player We love that Nico Horner comp don't we we're done with second base and we're still making it Gotta go back to it. A format for Garcia. I kind of feel like he's just good in both formats But maybe because of the steals a little bit better in categories I mean he struck out 12% of the time last year So that makes them and his walk rate went up to I think he's great in both formats I think it's very close to even All right, let's take our final break when we return back into third base ADP right after this Welcome back in fantasy baseball today our 2026 third base preview and let's get back into ADP After my Cal Garcia, we have two names in the 90 to 100 range Alex Breggman with an ADP of 90 and a Hanoi Suarez with an ADP of 98 So I will preface this Breggman his fantasy pros ADP is 90 his NFBC ADP in February is 113 I think that might be more reflective of what you should expect from Breggman and most draft I think he's probably going to be just outside the top 100 picks Sign to five year deal with the Cubs this offseason I will pull up his spray chart which is overrigly field for those watching here on YouTube And this is another confusing one. Yes, we would have liked Breggman more if he remained in Boston with Fenway Yes, we saw another pull heavy hitter in ESOC parade as fail while playing in regly field But as you can see the spray chart if you're watching Breggman is more pull happy to left center field Paradeus is pull happy right down the left field line So I think that hurt paradeus a lot more than it will for Breggman And Breggman has actually talked about this too and interviews talking about Playing in regly field last year he had 18 home runs Staccast said it would have been 19 if he played all of his games in regly Now we can't really factor in winning all those things so yes, I'm sure that Those will knock down some home runs as well With all that said Scott what do you think about Breggman on the Cubs? Is he worth a pick around 100? I mean, I'm a little annoyed That It was widely understood widely understood that Alex Breggman being the sort of player who the sort of power hitter who doesn't actually impact the ball that well If he ever wound up in a venue That where you couldn't count on his power playing fully to its pull side that it would kind of mess him up And he goes to one of the worst venues for a player with that profile And everyone's just like hey, he'll probably be fine I don't know I don't buy it I think it's a downgrade, but maybe maybe we have overstated it in the past well people People seem to bristle when I make the esok parrata's comparison because oh Alex Breggman's in a different league from esok parrata's but it's And yes parrata's is the most extreme form of this kind of hitter that we're talking about But parrata's with the Cubs Hit 223 with three homers in a 633 OPS in 52 games like It wouldn't take Bregg the bottom falling that far out for Breggman for him to be a bust in fantasy So I think I think using esok parrata's as An example of the effect that this specific venue change can have on a player is Illustrative even though It's obviously to a greater extreme than it's going to impact Breggman, but Breggman has the same issue I understand expected homeruns by ballpark. It's still kind of like them at Rigglyfield last year it said he would have been okay But from my research there expected homeruns by ballpark really struggles To model Rigglyfield Not only because of the wind effects. It's more wind It's more affected by wind by any other ballpark and in recent years The wind has hurt hitters much much more than it's helped hitters So there's that aspect but also just the way the park is laid out With the fences going way out in the corners That makes it difficult to model too because it just doesn't fit the usual ballpark convention in terms of layout So It misses a lot it misses a lot and I think it's missing it with Breggman I think unless there's a change of approach here for Breggman He makes himself and to more of a line drive hitter I think a lot of those fly balls that turn into homeruns in Houston and And you know maybe went over the big the green monster or banged off it and in in Boston I think they're going to become out here. So I am envisioning not the bottom completely falling out like it did for parrhetes But I'm envisioning something like a 240 batting average in 17 homeruns if Breggman stays healthy That is not worth a pick around 100. That's what I would plus I would take the over on that I think it is worth getting into like the specifics about the layout of Rigglyfield relative to other ballpark because It's 355 down the right the left field line which is incredibly deep that is 40 feet deep as in Tropicana field. Yeah It's actually very short in left center It's kind of like a squashed diamond relative to other baseball fields And so you have Right and left center are like 350 to 360. It's actually a little shorter in the power alleys Then it is right down the line. So I think the parrhetes comp is illustrative of the downside of how this could go wrong with this profile But I do think it's worth noting Breggman while he never hits the ball hard Uh His average x of velocity is usually around average Eastock paratis is usually in the bottom 15 percentile or worse in quality of contact. So I think You know Breggman's more average ish pop paratis is legitimately bottom of the barrel Quality of contact and he just he's the guy who's doing the magic trick to make it all work Breggman does it a little bit and you know, we've certainly seen the 45 homer season Doing it a lot there. I think he outperform his x homeruns by 14 that season But I think just generally It's a stronger skill set overall than eastock paratis so he should handle it better But you know when you look at what he's done the past few years. He's been right around 26270 Uh right around 25 homers. Maybe it's more like 255. I think 240 is probably on the lower end of what I'd expect but 255 20 ish homeruns I don't love it at this price um I'm a little less out on him than scott because I think scott you have like 150th right That sounds is lower than I've got to run around his 80p So I'm okay with Breggman, but he's not necessarily a target for me either Yeah, I'm probably expecting something similar crit was like 250 to 260 and 20 ish homeruns, but even that he's as long as he's healthy Obviously he's gonna play every day cubs lineup to be pretty good. So I think the counting stats will be all right But let's not forget he also missed six weeks with a right quad train last year and the quad has been an issue for him in the past as well So I'm probably just not using a pick around 100 in a categories league for Breggman in a point league It does kind of change because he's really good in that format in average 3.1 fantasy points per game last year So with all that said When would you guys actually take Breggman in a point sleep not a category sleep? So to follow up on what Chris was saying earlier. I have him 139 in Roto. Yeah, so not quite 150 but lower than you guys and points league. Yes, Breggman is a full tier higher for me Because that plate discipline is gonna help a lot. I have 95th there. Yeah, and I have him 90th and Chris has him 81 so 80 to 100 range and a point league bang on totally fine with that if you want to go with If you want to take Breggman at that point in that format. Let's say let's talk about a you and you swaras now 34 years old Has finished as a top 45 overall player two years in a row. He finished with 49 home runs last year But it was a tale of two seasons. He was awesome in Arizona 106 games there 36 homers 897 ops Then awful in his final 53 games in Seattle hit 189 six 82 ops And of course the good news. He signed a one-year deal with the reds this all season So he went from the worst hitting environment in baseball to one of the best With all that said he's one year older Plate discipline is Kind of wonky there strikes out a lot his xba was 211 Scott are you back in on swaras in Cincinnati? Oh, yeah back in big time My one fear for him was that he'd wind up back at Seattle Which we've now seen in two separate stents there. He's not in not one of those hitters who can handle Seattle another another place that creates Some site issues for hitters and swaras seems to be among the most affected But when he hasn't played in Seattle He has been a monster. I mean just look at his overall stat line It was a monstrous year last year even with all the trouble he had after being traded to the Mariners If you want further evidence That it was the venue that brought him down and not just regression not just decline In his 24 road games for the Mariners he hit 280 with a 921 ops So and since an adi which is about his Hitter friendly as can be certainly for a home run hitter like swaras I anticipate no trouble at all. I think there's a very good chance he hits upward of 40 homers and I am Flabbergasted That His adp has hardly budged on NFBC in the weeks since he signed with the reds because you know a lot of times any free agents value suppressed just because he doesn't have a team yet And I think in swaras is case specifically the fear was you go to the wrong park. This is the right park I think you know over the last week since he signed it's about 110 Where he's going three month to February I have him 50 spots higher than that I mean, I don't I don't really get what the hesitation is to me. He's Look, I like Riley a little more, but only a little more. I think it's a similar Similar skill said and obviously swaras. We've seen do it more recently. I would say swaras is probably One of the five hitters most likely to hit 45 homers this season I don't know, you know judge and Otani and I don't know who swarber. But sure right. Yeah, I think Swaras is on that list Of the five or whatever number you want to put there He has by far the highest likelihood of just not being useful for fantasy Just because he's gonna be 35. It's an inherently volatile skill set. We have seen even in Cincinnati Uh, pretty bad versions of a Hania Swaras remember his last year in Cincinnati I think people kind of just assumed he was done He hit 198 with 31 homers only 150 combined runs in RBI You know, what's funny about this is we've reversed roles here cuz back when he Was in Seattle actually his it the end of his first stint there You were pro swaras. I was anti swaras and I was saying look at the numbers in Cincinnati He wasn't good there at the end either Well, yeah, but I'm just pointing that out to say I think there's a wide range of outcomes I'm not saying I think that's likely to happen again that he hits 200 but There aren't a lot of players I think with as wide a range of outcomes as a Hania Swaras just because He's so with prune he is so bought into selling out for power at this point in his career and in a way that I think has Reflect some loss of skill set obviously he's still been a great player the past two seasons but I think he's had to cheat a little bit for you see it with You know his numbers against fastballs have gotten worse over the past couple of seasons as well. So I I just I like him. I don't think I have him Scott. It sounds like you haven't like 60th. I have about 80th So I'm a little lower on him and Riley they're two spots part, but I think they're very similar that being said if A Hania Swaras is there with the 90th pick. I'll take him every time especially if he's power It's just you have to go into your draft knowing I'm taking on a Significant amount of batting average risk especially here because he might hit 200 and it wouldn't really be Like that's not really on the extreme end of his outcome It's just just because I don't want a gloss over the the bigger points that we probably take for granted You know if you are attributing his 228 batting average last year to the time in Seattle I mean, I think that's fair 189 overall in Seattle I mentioned the numbers were good on the road still but 189 for the full stent with the Mariners It was 248 before that with the diamond backs and it was 256 the year before with the diamond backs So I'm not saying there's no batting average risk, but it's in the same category as Schwarber Kyle Schwarber where It hasn't manifested the last couple years ago. So that kind of puts my mind to these the plate discipline 7% walk rate 30% strikeout rate it does kind of lend itself to The bottom could fall out here if he just strikes out that much He's been incredibly aggressive over the over the past couple of years. Are you any of Swaras has I lean towards Being in especially if his ADP is 100 at this position where again, there's not really much upside So I would take I would take a shot here Around this ADP even a little bit higher. I think I have them like 85th or something like that but There is a chance that the the bottom could fall out here on Swaras Format for him. I assume better in a categories league just because so many strikeouts Yeah, yeah, yes for sure after Swaras you dropped out about 20 picks and you get to Jordan Westberg with an ADP of 120 That is the round 10 11 turn in a 12 team league and Jordan Westberg a darling of fantasy drafters last year me included He has lost some luster as he's struggled to stay healthy last year. He was limited to just 85 games due to a hamstring Spray and right ankle also dealt with some upper body left index finger It's always kind of had something going on last year when he played he was still good. He hit 265 17 home runs 770 OPS his full season pace 32 homers 112 runs scored Chris should there be more enthusiasm for Jordan Westberg Yes I think with Jordan Westberg The primary issue is just he needs to stay healthy You know, it's not like he's a locked in superstar But if he's just what he was the last two seasons But he plays 145 games and you pick him 120th overall Which is where his ADP is in the month of February I I think you're really happy with that. I think you'll you'll take 25 to 30 homers maybe more Good counting stats and a good lineup. I still think there's some latent stolen base upside if he can just stay healthy Because it's a really good athlete although he doesn't like to run it all we said that last year and he stole one base So yeah, I don't I don't want to say I'm counting on that but he's fast but he He has no interest in But we have seen he's kind of the opposite of Josh Neller But we have seen Gunnar Henderson grow more aggressive as a base dealer every subsequent year so you know I always have I think it could happen but it's not likely but it's Again, you're talking about ranges of outcomes. I think Double digit steals is in his range of outcomes for Jordan Lesberg. So I'm in on him at his price. I think anything outside of the top 100 I'm willing to take the chance on Jordan Lesberg in a road o league In a points league He doesn't strike out very much. He's a bad average, but He walks so infrequently below 5% each of the past two seasons which is weird because he was like a 9 10% guy in the miners if You really need him to be very good with counting stats to overcome that and a point league to the point where I don't really think you should feel good about him as a starter at a point But in a road o league. I think anything outside of the top 100. I'm willing to buy I'm happy you brought up the possibility of steals too. I should have mentioned this yesterday when talking about Jackson holiday I do think there's a chance the Orioles run more this year with their new manager Craig albernaz He came over from the guardians where they ranked eighth install in bases the last two years They are typically pretty aggressive. It's not you know one to one just because he's coming from there They're going to be more aggressive, but there's a chance Just based on you know the guardians being more aggressive. So We'll see if Baltimore runs a little bit more frequently this season after Westberg you drop down 15 picks He gets a match at men with an ADP of 135 that is round 12 of a 12 team league and his second year in San friend Not nearly as good as his first, but he was dealing with a right hand injury that landed him on the aisle twice He actually said the injury affected his ability to grip the bat So could explain some of the struggles under the hood plate discipline was still great He still hit the ball really hard only hit 231 the xba was 243 which is right in line with 2024 It's got I mentioned this earlier. I don't think Chapman is a sexy pick it feels more like a floor pick But if you're expecting 240 ish batting average 25 home runs and 10 to 15 steals I think that's all pretty doable and would be a fine starter as a fallback option Yeah, I think He's the only name in the fallback options tier of my tears. It's match up and all by his lonesome perfect I didn't even plan that yeah, so that is how I view him as well I like that he kept a strikeout rate below 25% again because remember during his struggles in Toronto really ever since he came back from the hip injury his strike out rate kind of ballooned on him and He became less useful for fantasy But he's he's gotten it back down in his two years with the giants And I think is a really solid option so Not an exciting choice. I mean exactly exactly what you'd expect from a fallback option Like you can draft match up and then feel pretty comfortable that he's He's gonna keep you afloat there at third base, but he's not going to really set you apart either. Yeah match up and is a very weird hitter because He hits primarily cleanup the past two years since he got to San Francisco. It's almost entirely fourth or fifth in the lineup and he's had like 35 more runs than RBI He's an okay OBP guy, you know 328-2024-340 last season, but he's more of a power hitter. So it's just weird that he's so much More heavily lean towards being a run score rather than a run producer in his profile. I think that's Just something you have to be cognizant of when you draft him because you might look at match atman and think Middle-the-order power hitter. I might get 30 homers out of him Should be a good source of RBI that has not been the case the the two years he's been in San Francisco Maybe that won't be the case because it's weird again. I feel like it could be better with a full season of debars Yeah, maybe I mean that yeah that RBI production He was really bad with runners in scoring position last year, but he was really good in 2024. So even that Definitely had 20 24 he had 78 RBI versus 98 runs. Yeah, she was weird Yeah, 30 home run like he's he's hit 30 home runs once and it was 2019 so I he hits the ball hard yeah, but Yeah, I mean you can only count on so many home runs a handful of steals. I mean his His hit chart is wild because there's just there are no hits in left field It's like there's homers and there's a few down the line and there's just like I don't know what it is they they Seem to know how to play him Perfectly because there's just no offensive production yeah in left field and unless he hits it over the wall It's a weird profile His pull air rates pretty good. So yeah Yeah, he hits a lot of hard he hits the ball you'd expect more home runs But he hits a lot of pop-ups he hits he strikes out a decent amount. So I I think he probably is what he is the last couple of seasons, but yeah, that's a fine starter. Yeah, it's just Unlikely to be much more than fine. I think after 2024 there was some hope he could Kind of take another step forward. I don't think that's coming. All right, let's talk sleepers break out's bus favorite to draft at third base And we'll start with the sleeper. All right, who wants to go first? We all have the same name Akamoto Okamoto Right the long-o. Yeah, in any case. I love him. I love him. We haven't talked about him yet I might need to move him up in my rankings because I feel like I forget about him every draft That's why I want his name on the tip of my tongue So some interesting stats here for Okamoto It was he is coming off his most productive season in Japan had a good career there But was especially good in 2025 32 not a full season 32 batting average 992 OPS Missed about half-fear with injury. So, you know, it was now Four times in the past eight years no PS over 900 twice. He's batted over 306 times. He's hit 30 homers or more and you're thinking who cares? It's Japan Lower level of competition, but for a hitter They're going through like a dead ball ear in Japan right now the offensive production is atrocious and you got Okamoto here putting up numbers like that to put it in To put it even into perspective more Weighted runs created plus into in Japan last year for Okamoto was 210 So that's comparing him to the rest of the league 210 that means he was you know league average as 100. He was 210 The major league leader last year was Aaron judge at 204 and nobody else was above 172 That was Otani at 172 so Okamoto was that much of an outlier in the league context of Japan last year and Exit velocity readings we don't have a ton of data for that from Japan, but I found multiple sources That cited Okamoto's average exit velocity there last year at 92.4 miles per hour and it's max at 112.2 So I feel like a lot of times you read about him and it's like oh he doesn't hit the ball as hard as moonataka marakami But he had good production so maybe it'll work out he hit the ball really hard, okay? Yeah, moonataka marakami is a freak in terms of how hard he hits the ball But oh Okamoto at least from the numbers we have available to us He did really hard himself and he strikes out like a third of the time As marakami so I think he's going to be much more usable the marakami Obviously he plays the scarcer position least on cps sports leagues I think with Anthony Santander the injury revelations there Okamoto's playing time is even more assured not that I was ever in doubt he might get multiple eligibility too Because they talked about playing him in the outfield they've talked about playing him a second base I think it's the first base today like whenever they want to give Vlad a day at dh They can play Okamoto at first base he's primarily supposed to play third but he has he does have some versatility there Any in any case I think this is going to go really well. I think it's a I think it's the sort of hit hit profile that will translate to our game and You know I'd be I'd be fine if I if I got shut out early at third base You know rather than roll the dice on like an attis and barter who I don't expect to play that much or Carlos Kareya who I'm not even sure is good anymore I'd go for a Okamoto and I'd do it happily The one thing I want to point out with Okamoto and he is my sleeper pick as well I have him ranked 40 picks ahead of his 80p I think so I'm I'm in The comp I've made is Post course field pre-collapse Nolan Arnata So the version who was there in since in St. Louis in 2021 2023 that range where probably not 34 homers like Arnata hit in 2021 but you know 20 to 25 Not as good of a batting average as you would expect given how little he's likely to strike out just because I think he's gonna be pulling the ball and that's gonna Limit the batting average upside but 265 Good RBI totals and a good lineup and he makes a lot of contact I think it's a very interesting profile the one thing I do want to point out is Last year is like the outlier of all outliers for Okamoto he had a 210 WRC plus that was Aaron Judgesk as Scott said It was only a 69 games He dealt with that arm injury. I think if I'm remembering correctly before that he was a very good hitter But it was in the like 160 180 130 range is where he had bounced around the previous couple years so like I think he's good, but musta talk to Yoshida was a better hitter in Japan Sayas Suzuki was a much better hitter than Okamoto overall in Japan now look if he says Suzuki That's awesome. We'll take that every time but you know Yoshida Yoshida was a 200 WRC plus guy I think in a full season before he came over so I Don't think there's like superstar potential here for Okamoto. I think it's Like he finishes eighth ninth tenth at third base. I take that as a win. I think I you mentioned a com Chris Nolan Aranado His time in St. Louis earlier on. I just see you know paradeus and Breggman You know we talk about these guys a lot you know 250 to 260 25-ish home runs I think that's all very doable for Okamoto. He has great plate discipline as many walks his strikeouts last year as well And he kind of does the thing he he over the past two years in the NPB he led The league and pulled air raid so I mean that I think it's Pretty fair comp and you're getting him around 80 p 200 Over at the NFBC in February. It's like 240 so you could still get Okamoto really really late I'm still well ahead of him which is if shocking because they're both third base eligible there and I'm out of got a much bigger contract so like that given the lack of information that we have Just go with one guy got 60 million one guy got 26 million I think Like the not to to at the risk of oversimplifying Feels kind of straightforward. I actually think of Murakata Murakami Should be discussed in the sleepers discussion as well. I like him a lot. He's only third base at NFBC But he is third base eligible somewhere maybe Yahoo as well. Um, that sounds right But I I think there is bigger upside and downside from Murakami Okamoto safer Yeah, I mean I like Okamoto's upside I think more than you guys because you make the Nolan Aeronauto cup Comp in terms of how well he pulls the ball in the air he hits the ball way harder than Aeronauto way harder I mean he did he did he did he did he did he did Aeronauto was 89 miles per hour his first three years in St. Louis I would expect because you said Okamoto was about 90 in Japan. I would guess 92 92 on either. Okay. Yes. I mean I don't know that just because he hit maybe I don't know that just because he had I know it is accurate. We don't have I mean that's that's part of the problem is we have the the full data for Aeronauto and and what we teams presumably have full data for Murakami and and Okamoto like that's What's trust about our contract right? Yes, that's what I was saying. He got four years 60 million and more Kamigaw like two for 34 something like that so yeah, yeah, so it's um If nothing else the people who know more than us Like Okamoto more so that's That's I think what relevant for sure. I wrote this player down as a breakout But I wrote two players there so I'll just include him here in the sleeper discussion probably more of a sleeper at this point But Royce Lewis I have no idea if the guy can stay healthy But he did some interesting things towards the end of last season final 34 games 258 seven homeers 11 steals Full season pace based on that is 33 homeers 52 steals No, I don't think Royce Lewis is going to do that But it's just a reminder of his upside what he can do like when he's right and he's healthy And I think he still has a lot of talent again It's like how many games is he gonna play I you know, I wouldn't expect much more than Like 120 or something like that you could fill in the spots when when he doesn't play But I also think the hiring of Derek Shelton and maybe I'm reading too much into this But I I like to create these narratives and things in my mind When he was hired by the twins he flew out to Royce Lewis in his home residence just to meet him and Just reinstall confidence in him that like dude We believe you can be a superstar you have all the tools in the world if we can keep you on the field I was reading a bunch about this like they are still really convinced that Royce Lewis can be a superstar I don't know if he can be a superstar, but I think it could be a productive player if he's healthy Which he just almost never has been so I would be okay still taking the bounce back shot here on Royce Lewis 80p is 205 This is the latest that we've basically ever seen him go in 80p. So I'm down with it breakout at third base I'm gonna go with no all the marty as a breakout now if you would ask me on August 24th When he was hitting 300 with an 856 ops If he would be a breakout in 2026 I would say no he's already broken out clearly 300 with an 856 ops But things went so poorly thereafter 193 batting average 549 ops 33% strikeout rate very out of character and his final 29 games That uh, you know, we got to make the breakout case for no LV marty all over again And obviously that's working against the breakout case the last we saw him it was a miserable monthy had but I think what he showed Over the full extent of 2025 With all the good times he had as well is that the p ed Suspension in 2024 Doesn't tell the whole story here. It's not like his His initial first impression in 2023 which was also very impressive was The ed fueled and he's never gonna matter he showed a lot us a lot of good things last year as well Including hitting a ball as hard as 116.7 miles per hour a mark topped by only 13 hitters So no LV marty has big boy power He is a fast runner and Pretty pretty good at base stealing I think certainly playing in Cincinnati if he continues to get full time of bats stays healthy, you know 25 Homer 15 steel season is A fairly conservative estimate. I don't think that's the full extent of marty's upside But it wouldn't that all shocked me if he got there this year um The strikeout rate if it Ended if the season had ended in late august It was only 18.8% so it was very good it blew up in september You know, we'll see in terms of batting average where it ends up if if that's gonna remain an issue for marty or not um, you know, but that's the only reason he's still affordable that bad finish that makes him Uh, a question mark again is the only reason we can talk about marty in this context Yes, it makes him a question mark, but also it makes him affordable so at this week position Are you willing to gamble on it at cost? You know, I prefer ochemoto so i think marty's going earlier on average But in theory in a vacuum. I do think the breakout chances for marty this year are pretty good The 80 p for marty 147.8 and again, yeah, that's like 50 picks ahead of where uh Ochemoto is going right now by the way with marty has outfield eligibility as well Is expected to play outfield for the reds, but still has that third base eligibility based on where he played last year Another breakout candidate here for me is uh, Addison barger who performed well last year He hit 243 21 homers in 135 games He definitely struggled to the end of the season. I totally get that But he turned it back on in the playoffs where he hit 367 with three homers and ops over a thousand It was like a 19 game sample so it's not much, but you know struggled bounced back in the post season Uh, and I think you know, he could turn out to be a streaky player I could see that as part of his profile, but he hits them all really hard. It's a solid barrel rate I think Still an okay blue jays lineup, but we got the news earlier today that Anthony Santander is going to miss five to six months he needs shoulder surgery and I think that makes it a little bit more likely at least that barger is an everyday player now He hasn't been good against lefties, but uh getting around the field more would be good for his counting stats and things like that So not a guarantee that that will happen, but I think the chance is at least there for Addison barger And so I kind of like Chris any break out here No, I feel like kind of a jerk because I think I'm I lean more bust on both of your candidates for breakout Especially if bargers price rises from here. I think it makes him an easier breakout call his Price now just inside the top 200 fine whatever I don't care That's cheap enough that it's just it's unlikely to matter, but He had this stretch where he was just absolutely hammering the balls like 93 94 mile per hour average ex velocities that completely disappeared as the season went on he he was Let me pull up the month by month. I think he was down closer to 90 the final two months of the season Yeah, the final four months actually so June 91 July 94 August 88 September 90 and this is while being shielded from tough lefties. I don't love the plate discipline The minorly track record really doesn't buy him as like a big power hitter. I think The art Addison barger is a case of a guy who just got hot for a couple of months and I think he's a pretty fringe hitter overall, but Look you're gonna have to take some Players you don't love at third base just to fill out a lineup right especially in a 15 team league so I'm not pounding the table against any of those guys if I if you're gun to my head Weird thing to do, but if you did I'd probably say Jordan Westberg Yeah, I mean he's still young enough where he actually isn't that young, but if he just stays healthy I could yeah, because that one's just just healthy. Yeah, I totally hear what you're saying about barger It's just and look the postseason is such a small sample, but he was facing good pictures in the postseason He performed really well So I like that fact that he kind of like bounced back and performed in the biggest spots there With Addison barger a bust at their base got I mean it's Breggman Alex Breggman going to Chicago and planting my flag in that one if He ends up fine don't at me But if he doesn't very much do the Cubs fans are coming for you Scott. Oh, they've already come They've already come uh Chris a bust at third base It's probably no i'll be marty I think he's okay at the price I have him ranked a couple rounds lower than his price. I'm not gonna be drafting him And the thing is I can see the the theory behind really liking no elv marty obviously long term Big prospect pedigree all that stuff we saw some upside last summer Uh, we don't really have uh Really any kind of sample size of him being like a truly impactful offensive player even in the minors And he was young and raw and all that stuff. He has an 822 minor league opus It's about i want to say about 15 homers per 150 games about 25 stolen bases Look if you get 15 25 out of him or 20 25 that's great and i think that's reasonable but I think marty is definitely a very high variance player because I don't think he's likely to be very good defensively in the outfield They do have some some depth. I think we've seen it that playing time could be an issue for no elv marty so i just I'm just a little out on the price and i wish he hadn't had the huge September slump That would make me feel a lot better about drafting him for sure I don't have a great pick at busts for Third base. I'm probably he's expensive probably not gonna draft camonero in the second round But i don't i don't think he's a bus. I think he's really talented. I would probably lean bright man Just because i'm just it's it's an avoid for me, but um i'll probably just be okay Favorite third baseman a draft all things included skills price Everything a name favorite third baseman Austin Riley gris Given how if you have been on everyone i kind of think it's just how's your mirror is I don't really i just really like even hope you get a top five pick that's it I said there's like everybody's so cheap that it's hard to come up with a bus Just because i think everybody's price is fairly reasonable, but it's also like I don't know there's a reason everyone's price is reasonable That's not a very good position and i can find things to dislike about pretty much everyone Yeah, pretty easily. So I think jordan westberg's fine. I think suarez certainly at his price if if he remains if any honey suarez remains like a a hundredth and eighty p or thereabouts Then he's definitely going to be a big target for me name for me is gonna be my kehl garcia here favorite third baseman draft Favorite third base corner infielder. I think we're all Fighting over okamoto. Let's see who gets him in the drafts We do back to third base adp to finish out the show we left off with bat chatman and twelve picks after him We get to noelvi marty who's adp is 148 that is around 13 of a 12 teamer, but you have heard both sides of the breakout and the bus argument for him So we will keep things moving after marty you dropped out about 20 picks and you get to esok paratis Who has an adp of 166 that is around 14 we briefly mentioned this earlier on in the show He did exactly what we expected him to do last year he hit 20 homers 809 ops in 102 games Full season pace 31 homers 84 runs 84 bi But he missed two months with a nasty hamstring strain which obviously limited the total numbers that he provided last year And we still just don't know How or where he's going to play every day so it's uh Yeah, this can figure itself out. There are lots of injury prone players on the asteris I get that but right now if everyone's healthy He's kind of just a utility yet Well, I mean my bigger fear than him staying on the asteris is him not staying on the asteris. I get into the pirates especially would be the pirates especially You're linked to him too. That would be terrible. Yeah. Um, so that'd be really bad So they need a third basement too. I was looking at it to have Jared Trio. Although is there a basement? I think I'm trying to look back through the headlines He's played second base before and I think there was a report this offseason that they Might let him play their some Yeah, they've talked about outfield and second base for him. Yeah, I but I have also know they've said they don't want out to vague playing left field anymore So how would that open up the spot for bread is the third you know, it's just His own hamstring injury ended up blocking him because they then they had to go get Carlos Kareya And that's what has made lead to this crowding in the infield and I think they're thought heading into the offseason was oh We'll just trade Christian Walker But they found no takers there understandably And they'll have a lot of money So he's gonna remain on the roster How long will it take parretto is to just overtake him at first base? Provided parretto is still there. I can't answer that but I think he's better and I think the Astros know he's better At least given where they play their home games. He's better for them is parretto's so you know Hopefully he can carve out enough time filling in its second filling in a third filling in at first Maybe occasional DH Starter left field start and be fine And then maybe you know Kareya gets hurt or Walker Falters or whatever then opens up more regular playing time for reddit parretto's I think there's a very good chance he'll be fine, but there's obviously Lot of uncertainty right now including the possibility of him getting traded and that's why I can't answer when you ask Who's your favorite third base meant to draft? You know month ago when It still seemed like there was time to sort this out. I would have said parretto's because I feel like he's being undervalued again for how good he can be in Houston But I get it now there there it's a problem. There's a problem right now that I think will eventually be sorted out, but I don't know how After parretto's you have four names right next to each other in the 200 to 210 range of ADP Cosmo Okamoto Royce Lewis Maximum C of the Dodgers He has a maximum C of the A's actually has third base eligibility as well not confusing at all and Addison barger So we've talked a lot about Okamoto. I talked about Royce Lewis. Do you guys have any thoughts on Royce Lewis? It's got you are muted sir I'm over it man. I wish the ADP outside 200 like you know, yeah, I think the price is fine I wish there was more given I wish there was more tangible to hang on to Regarding the upside because we're now two years removed from really seeing him play like an impact bat for As small as the stretches were and the underlying data has never been all that impressive. So I think the fact that he started running late last season is An avenue to it's kind of an insurance policy for him where if If he's just a 15 homer 250 guy, but let's say he steals 15 bases, which I think is the pace he was on last year And then you know, you're not happy with it, but I guess as a cheap corner and fielder. It's probably okay And Royce Lewis needs a good insurance policy because that guy has Been hurt a lot Max Muncie with the Dodgers. He's now 35 years old still performs well when he's on the field started off terribly last year And then he got glasses and everything changed from that point forward He hit 268 with a 406 on base percentage 19 homers 63 RBI 9 69 OPS in 72 games 63 RBI in 72 games from that point forward. He was amazing He's also awful against lefties and he only started against two of them from July 5th on so Seems like a pretty strict platoon player Scott the skill set is perfect in a point's league But you also need that volume of someone that's going to play every day. So Max Muncie's kind of a weird one Yeah, I think he's still a deserving starter in points leagues especially given that a lot of A lot of the third base pool is is not a lot of the third base pool suffers in that format and it's so good for Muncie I think I remember reading that Part of the reason he sat so much against lefties down the stretch is because they were trying to rest him anyway coming back from the aisle Now the numbers have trended down against lefties. He used to be really good against them, but he hasn't been in recent years and so Maybe they'll find an excuse to sit him against lefties anyway, but they got to have a good alternative against lefties I think right now. It's just Alex Freeland who didn't show much During his time in the majors Miguel Rojas could play some but you know, they also have high sunk Kim at second base. So Muncie might end up playing more regularly with than we think and that and points leagues especially would be great news It would make him I think a sleeper there Roto, you know the batting average isn't going to be good. That's a it's a harder fit for him and then you add on top of it the playing time risk he's I still think he's going to overperform his draft as I think he's a bargain either way but Given his age given the platoon risk given the batting average issues you understand why he's not being Discussed like a starting caliber third-base minute fantasy. He's like kind of a little awkward I think like yeah the skill sets better in points, but If they use him the way they did last year, you know, Frank you said 63 home runs in 72 games after he got glasses 63 RBI 63 RBI. Sorry in 72 games 63 home runs be a lot 63 RBI in 73 games 72 games. Well, it was actually more like 63 RBI in like 100 or so games That's just how many times he was out of the lineup. Yeah, you know, so that's that's the one thing you have to account for is If they use him the same way they did last year and I think they will Because as we say about their pictures all the time It's about getting to October that's that's the only thing they care about getting everybody healthy For whatever their first playoff game is and so If Max Muncie plays 70 games next season, but he's healthy in October. That's a win for the Dodgers Yeah, he does profile someone who would be better in a daily lineup league too. You could just Get him in there whenever he plays so Something something to consider there with Max Muncie by the way our consensus headhead points third base rankings Muncie is ranked 11th all three of our rankings combined So he is a low end starter in a 12 team head to head point league dropped out about 25 more picks three names and at 235 to 250 range we have Caleb Durbin who was just traded to the red socks Mark Fientos and Alec Bohm We spoke very briefly about Durbin yesterday. Is there anything else you guys would like to add the expectation is help play second base For the red socks, but he also has third base eligibility Yeah, fine deep league option, but in You know standard 12 team even wrote o context with extra infield spots to fill You know you kind of messed up if you draft him as a starter there. Yeah Mark Fientos had the huge 2024 and then took a step back last year only hit 233 with 17 home runs The strikeout rate actually dropped But his barrel rate also dropped with it so perhaps sacrifice some power to make more contact last year He did have a huge august and then he struggled again in September and His role is kind of up in the air right now too right now. It looks like he is a short side platoon option for the New York mits I'm deeply on impressed by Mark Vientos I There's some power upside, but he doesn't get to it consistently enough. I think for it to really matter I I'm not sure he should be an everyday major leager So um Yeah, I I don't think he will. I don't see how he will I even made these should be going ahead of him I mean yeah, he was a corner and fielder. I don't like Mark Vientos. Yeah Chris you gave off dad vibes. I am deeply disappointed in you mark Vientos And then we have Alec boom pretty Alec boom esk season but he only played 120 games He went on the aisle twice once with a fractured left rib another time with left shoulder inflammation But hit 287 had his 11 homers in 120 games. I think there is Some playing time risk more than previous years just because If boom struggles at any point They do have eight in Miller who's one of their top prospects waiting in the wings and could maybe give him a shot So I think maybe the floor is a little bit lower for boom than maybe previous years but He's not very exciting Auto-campon the bench has got an interesting two even before they get to Miller. That's true. Yep. I will say Boom is one of the better very very cheap sources of RBI which are a hard RBI in batting average Yeah, that's yeah exactly Like those are probably the two of the harder categories to find as a standalone And so if you do get to the 250 round or 250 range of your drafts and you need batting average in RBI Alibone should be pretty helpful there The thing about alibone and and I guess you made a good point about there being more playing time risk than in years past I don't think it's a huge risk though. I'm a little confused. Why everyone's so out on him right last year He was the 141st player taken On average according to fantasy pros the year before 150 first. Yeah, now. It's a hundred picks later And the underlying skill said just doesn't look bad different Yes, he missed some time with injuries so the totals were down, but I don't think he's a different player. So I actually think You know he might be the ultimate fallback option at this position and Oh even more so for points leagues. Yeah, I would say Then then he helps with the batting average in roto, but Yeah, I think he's still you know if you liked him last year you you'd shown it like him that much last this year Yeah, and if you don't believe that there's playing time risk He kind of profiles is a really good and only option too for anyone who plays in a model leagues out there Four names in the 260 to 275 range. We have Carlos Kareya Colt Keith Miguel Vargas and Matt Shaw We spoke about Keith on our second base preview and Vargas on our first base preview, but Kareya He did play 144 games. That was the good news. Bad news. He was not very impactful did perform better once getting to Houston, but I'm not sure how much has left and there's just a lot of injuries So well he was pretty awesome in 2024 Which you might remember was not that long ago roughly one year or so You had a 905 OPS hit 310 That year. I don't think the underlying numbers really backed it up. It was 271 xba, but 358 x woba that's still solidly above average player. It's a good park. It should be a pretty good lineup I do think there is still room for Carlos Kareya to be a 20 Homer 90 RBI 85 run guy when he's on the field with a badding average that doesn't hurt you. I think injury risk is a big deal here, but I I think Kareya is a totally fine fallback option It's certainly in a deeper league There's probably a little more upside here than with Alec Bome So I think Kareya's a fine target All right Cult Keith we again spoke about yesterday Vargas who spoke about him as well match-ha Underwhelming rookie season His only season hit 226 13 home runs 17 steals 690 OPS and as of now Finds himself in some type of utility role unless he Just wins the dh job over noises by a sterios. I'm not so sure that They just want match ought to be a dh at this point in his career this early on But uh scott as of now match-ha on the outside looking in in Chicago Yeah, I don't see him having much value unless they can work out a trade And I don't see it was treason for them too It was pretty underwhelming his rookie season Given how quickly he he Rose to the majors. I mean he was third percentile average exit velocity. He he He found a way to get 13 homers and 437 played appearances in spite of that But I think he kind of suffers from the same problem Eriegly field that esok parrides did. I mean it's More comparable that Bataball profile match-ha then then that Alex Breggman is to esok parrides and so shah would benefit from a trade Outside of in alone leagues. He's off my radar unless that happens or unless there's an injury ahead of him he was pretty good in the second half. It's worth noting 11 homers and 205 played appearances started to figure some stuff out but There was also a piece in the athletic maybe a month and a half ago talking about just his I think the biggest thing was he's just He tinkers with his swing and his setup a lot and it is kind of a weird swing the sense I got from the article I can't remember who wrote it, but there was some like Maybe the coaching staff didn't love how much he tinkers with his swing Yeah, I don't know I I just wish there was really Anything to point to that there were really no Above average skills for match-ha is a rookie which is not a great place to build on especially for a guy who Probably will not play anywhere close to every day. Yeah, I don't want to bury the kid He's still so young, but it's He needs played appearances and I just don't know how that's going to happen without an injury right now With the cubs three names in the 275 to 300 range Ernie Clement Brett Beatty no one aeronauto we spoke about Clement and Beatty on our second base preview aeronauto traded over to the debax this offseason. He's turning 35 in April and has looked pretty cooked here Any very deeply interested no one aeronaut It's a park upgrade. It's a lineup upgrade, but he looks completely done I don't want to write it off entirely, but he dealt with a lot of injuries last year So I mean if you think he gets stay healthy, but that's part of getting old Well, and you know to one end right like we haven't gotten a useful season out of no aeronauto since he was 32 Yeah, generally players don't turn that around it's possible But I George Springer Yeah, and look maybe he locks back in as a You know esacreides type who just pulls everything right over the left field fence, but I've seen no reason to give no an aeronauto that benefit of the doubt anymore Another one who feels like a solid and it'll only play just because he's going to play a lot He's gonna play every day. He's still a phenomenal defender. Yes. Yeah I know we talked about Brett Beatty in the second base one and I voiced then that I wished There was more of an opportunity for him to play because I think he was on the verge of breaking out He showed a lot of signs of it down the stretch last year Well, just since then it's come out that he is among the candidates for the right field job that they're gonna play one so to and left and I think everybody's presuming Carson binge The prospect will be the favorite there But I know some on the Met's beat are speculating that Brett Beatty is who the Met's are hoping wins the job and You know even if he doesn't it's it's just another avenue for playing time if they're open to playing Brett Beatty and right field And it sounds like they're very much are in addition to the him being a part-time DH with Vientos there may be still An opportunity here final two months of 2025 Beatty hit 308 with seven homers and an 866 ops and In packs the ball plenty hard enough yeah Being a left-handed header presents challenges, but he's eligible at the two-weekest in field positions. So I think I think he is still a quality Sleeper and somebody who could gain a lot of value in spring training as it becomes clear what the Met's plans are for him Again, that was Brett Beatty that Scott was just talking about six names in the 300s at 325 range Willie Castro Marcelo Meyer Zach McHenry Brooks Lee Josh Young Ryan McMan We mentioned Castro and Brooks Lee on the second base preview Marcelo Meyer kind of some post-hype here. He's just going so late and drafts He was one of the Red Sox top prospects entering last season And we've heard his name for a long time now and it looks like he is going to be the starter at third base So he's going to get an opportunity. He's dealt with a lot of injuries, but I mean gosh as late as he's going I would not be surprised if he does at least a little bit of something this season How sure are we they get he's going to be the starter at third base. I know there were a lot of A lot of articles coming out today as players began reporting to spring training I guess my retort would be who else yeah who else well maybe Durbin Durbin it because they have a lot of second base options Well What would they do at second base and like Roman Gonzalez or I can't I mean Gonzalez who is actually pretty impressive. I know he matches against lefties. Yeah, I think he's just a lefty match Christian Campbell Isaiah Kiner-Faleffa They said they want to use Campbell in the outfield But they can't play the infield like off to the side and they did say that But you know if Marcelo Meyer is not getting a done this spring in Christian Campbell's mashing I mean the story could change pretty quickly there. Yeah, that's that's certainly a possibility I mean I think I would lean towards Meyer probably gets the first shot, but it's it's not a guarantee Do you have any interest in Meyer? Not really. I mean it's It's never a bad idea late in a deep draft To just Okay, this guy did nothing Last year Nobody's in on him anymore, but I know he was a top prospect not long ago. So I'll just You know throw a bucket of them Give them a shot and maybe he just magically breaks through I did that with Aaron Judge That exact same thing in Tout Wars However many years ago heading into Aaron Judges rookie season got him very late Not even really as a big believer in judge and you know, he had one of the best rookie seasons of all time So like and that's not the only example I can point to of that where I was just like I don't see anything here But I know he's talented and so the cost is low. Why not and it works out But that's really my only interest in Meyer because I don't see a lot to get excited about Just looking at his rookie performance Zach McKinchery had a pretty nice season here with the Tigers 12 homers 19 steals it was extremely front loaded He crashed and burned in the second half. I had some injury stuff going on But also feels like Kevin McGonigal is coming for that short stop job sooner rather than later So not much interest there in McKinchery Chris anything here with Josh Young or Ryan McMahon It kind of feels like the last chance here for Josh young Um, yeah, and there are still reasons to think he could be a decent source of power But certainly my expectations for Josh Young have taken a hit um The fact that he was actually able to stay on the field last year, but just was completely Ineffective uh is not a great sign so Yeah, I think there's some still some latent potential for Josh Young, but he's gonna be 28 in One day Tomorrow happy birthday Josh Josh um It doesn't it doesn't give me a lot of confidence that you know that there's much upside left unfortunately Ryan McMan I will just mention he got to his usual 20 home runs But his batting average dropped to 214 and he's no longer in chorus field obviously now with the Yankees He still hits them all really really hard and his pulled air rate actually went up So I mean technically that should play well in Yankee Stadium But like a 34% strike hour and I just I don't think and he's just like a platoon player because they have all meta rosario They're gonna use him against lefty so um Even in the deepest of leagues not really interested in Ryan McMan post 350 ADP uh some names here Jordan Lawler Connor Norby Nolan Gorman Jared Triollo Keep Brian Hays Brady House Miguel and Duhar Yoan Moncata Anybody stand out? I mean I wasn't on Lawler Until they traded for Nolan Aronato But now they traded plays Alexander Scott's yeah and they did and they're supposedly trying Lawler in the outfield. I feel like That's kind of a waste of his That like if you have a quality infield prospect moving him to the outfield is kind of Forfitting value there and in a way that I don't feel like is necessary Unless you think he can just be like a super impactful center-fielder which is possible But even that like they haven't projected in left field now so yeah Yeah, I guess maybe I should get back in on him after the blaze outlexandertrade that's fair I haven't given up on him as a prospect I know much of the world has because it's very brief stints in the majors have gone poorly but they're very brief and You know he's continued to mash triple A He has a good pull side power on base skills base dealer. There's a lot to like there still if the diamond backs do give him a sincere chance finally at long last Then you know could be a post type sleeper. He will definitely be on a bunch of my benches if he makes the team for sure And probably some if he doesn't because I've drafted them already yeah, Jordan Lawler every time he's been at triple A He has just dominated I have asked our buddy the Welsh about Jordan Lawler many times just because he's You know deep-axe fan and he's very close to the situation. He said he doesn't think that he can hit non-fastballs And so I looked into this stuff against breaking balls very tough in the minors Here were his wif rates against sliders 38% against sweepers 45% against changeups 43% against curve balls 39% so Wif rates are very bad against non-fastness. Yeah That might explain the biggest red flag. Yeah, for sure and that's in the minors too. It's a little bit tougher in the majors So uh Chris I did want to ask you about Connor Norby's because what I was digging in he seemed mildly interesting in the very deep league perspective he had eight homers and eight steals in like 80 games played His sprint speed is really good. He pulled the ball in the air really well So I was like maybe 250 and 15 15 guy with the marlins Yeah, he was on the iL For most of last season I think you had no bleak strain in spring training they are talking about him as someone who could Play all over the field um Potentially in the outfield even first base third base um maybe a little second and he is reworking his swing this off season to try to tap into more pullside power Maybe he was someone who was mildly interesting and during last year before the injuries Connor Norby played really well after the trade in 2024 So I'm not saying there's no upside there. I don't think there's a ton of upside there though. I think it's like What maybe 20 homers 12 steals in a kind of best case scenario I was thinking kind of like an auto Lopez type player if it works out which is not great But again, it's like deep release. It's it's not a nothing um I think that's possible with Connor Norby uh anything else here on gorman triolo keep Brian Hayes Brady House and duhar now with the podres Brady House is so young and so recently regarded as a somewhat interesting prospect that i don't want to write him off But this is another situation where there's there's nothing beyond that to point to even his minor league production was never all that impressive so If you're throwing a very late round pick at Brady House, it's Pretty much a blind faith. Let's see if this guy can unlock something, but I don't have a lot of faith in that Mm-hmm gorman we mentioned on the second base preview he should get a chance to play every day at third base for the carnalz And I think still has a lot of power upside batting averages probably gonna be terrible But if you're looking for late power, I could see it there uh with no one gorman prospects of note again Nobody not not really. I mean maybe it turns out to be like cult emerson or uh eating Miller at third base or something But or jad weliams somebody brought that up in the chat. Uh they they got rid of A couple of uh well, I mean they created an opening in third base with the Durbin trade and uh Joey Ortiz could shift to shortstop Or jad weliams could just play shortstop They don't really have great alternatives otherwise the brewers. So that's one named invention also No, not a prospect, but I don't want to lose sight of the fact given how Week this position is how thin it gets boba shet is gonna be third baseman. Oh right. I should have mentioned a week into the season a lot earlier That's my bad. Podcast Summary
Key Points:
Third base is identified as a weak position in fantasy baseball for the 2026 season, with a significant drop-off in talent after the top few players.
The top tier includes elite, consistent performers like José Ramírez and high-upside players like Junior Caminero, but the position lacks depth and reliable starters.
Draft strategy emphasizes being aggressive early to secure a top third baseman, as waiting risks being left with low-floor options; targets include Austin Riley, Elly De La Cruz, and Manny Machado.
Concerns exist about player regression, ballpark effects (e.g., Caminero moving to Tropicana Field), injury histories, and the overall scarcity of quality prospects at the position.
Late-round fallback options or sleepers mentioned include Matt Chapman, Royce Lewis, and Kazuma Okamoto, but they come with significant risk or uncertainty.
Summary:
FAQs
Third base is considered the weakest position with limited high-end depth, making it a priority to draft early to avoid being cornered out of quality options.
Top targets include Jose Ramirez, Junior Caminero, Austin Riley, and Manny Machado, with an emphasis on securing them early due to the position's scarcity.
Concerns include potential regression from his 45-homer season, a move back to Tropicana Field (a less hitter-friendly park), and his batting average possibly settling around .250.
Despite being 33, Ramirez remains elite with top-six finishes in four of the past five years, offering durability and consistent production, making him a safe top-five pick.
Consider targeting bounce-back candidates like Austin Riley or value picks like Eugenio Suarez, with fallback options including Matt Chapman for a high floor.
The prospect pool is weak, with few top-tier third base prospects; most infield prospects are shortstops who may eventually transition, but immediate impact options are limited.
