His characters engage in deep, important reflections about their lives, but these deep and important thoughts are often intermingled with digressions regarding the desire for food or the need to go to the bathroom. There are indeed a lot of toilet-related thoughts and jokes in this book. It was something new and brave, something that reflected the cultural fascination of early 20th century with the work of Austrian psychoanalysts Sigmund Freud because of the unfiltered style of its prose. The book abounds with puns, quotations in different languages, hallucinations, dreams, very vulgar jokes, in a letter to Joyce Vahulis' poet and editor, as it abounded, worried that the excrements will prevent people from noticing the quality, and an incredible number of references, puzzles, and literary inventions that force the reader to interact with the text at a level no other novel had ever asked before and very few have since. For over a year after the publication of Euliss' on the day of his 40th birthday, the answer for James Joyce was, he stops writing entirely, not a page, not a word of fiction for a whole year, he was done. Yet suddenly, in March of 1923, Joyce found himself writing a few pages of a new one titled project. Soon he wrote to his patron Harriet Shaw Weaver. Yet it is quite likely for the reader to go through the whole novel without really understanding much more about the story than this. What makes Finnegan's Wake such a unique and complex work of fiction is the linguistic style Joyce chooses to use in telling his story. If Euliss' his prose would dive deep in the stream of waking consciousness of its characters, getting impressively close to the nature of human thought, Phinegan's wake goes after an even harder, more in losing target, trying to portray the kind of thinking we do in dreams. Can we write a work of literature, joy scenes to ask himself, that really sounds like the fragments of thoughts we experience while we sleep? What he tried to do, as he himself described it, was to reconstruct the nocturnal life of people. The result, as it's easy to imagine, is really hard to understand. Throughout the book, it's like language itself is sleeping and dreaming and the words themselves change and mix with each other freely, creating a surreal English that borrows from a number of different languages and includes noises and endless number of made-up words, even neologisms still used to this day like the word "hawk". Phinegan's wake, Joyce's last incredibly ambitious project, was deeply influenced by the theories of Italian 18th Century philosopher Jean-Baptiste Vico, who saw history as cyclical, characterized by corsieric or c-cycles and counter-cycles. We will become one of those people who pretend they've read Ulysses because they think it makes them look cool. It seems that every age has a book like that. For a while it was Thomas Pinchens, Gravity's Rainbow, Lately it's more frequently David Foster Wallace's infinite jest, but that would be such a pity. The truth is that James Joyce has written some really great, really enjoyable books, and it's worth reading them because they're good, not because they make a sound smart. Few books have better captured that oppressive sense of living in a city in a peripheral country that thinks it's more important than it actually is than Dubliners. Don't we all have them? Those friends who seem always just ready to pack up and leave who are just about to finish the masterpiece that will make them famous, who have a new commercial idea or a plan to climb up the social ladder to the upper class, nobody portrays them better than Joyce because he knew them all so well. As for a portrait of the artist as a young man, Stephen Dedell is a story, we'll be very familiar to any young person with artistic ambitions. It is a masterfully told story about growing up in a very religious environment and starting to crave something different. And if we really want to give Joyce a chance to astonish us, we could even pick up your lisses, a truly wonderful book.
