Speaker 1This is the Grow2CEO podcast with me, Rose Radford, empowering high-achieving business owners and entrepreneurs to strategize the leadership of your business and create more impact, financial success, and fun, because you are ready to Grow2CEO. Welcome back, my friends. In today's episode, I am joined by my wonderful friend and sales and marketing coach, Holly McHugh. Now, Holly has actually worked with clients in well over 50 different industries to help them own their brilliance, nail their positioning, master their messaging, and create effortless sales without needing paid ads. So if you are maybe new in business or you're looking for a messaging upgrade right now, this particular episode is going to be very useful to you. Hey, Holly. Welcome, welcome. So great to have you join us. Now, I want to get started by asking you a bit more about how you ended up starting your business, and what were you doing before you started your business?
Speaker 2Hey, Rose. Great to be here. Thank you so much for having me. Yeah, so it's a bit of an interesting journey, actually, because I never set out to be an entrepreneur. So I was working in the corporate. I was a brand strategist working in Fortune 500s, and basically, I had landed my dream job, or so I thought. And then decided, actually, I was rather miserable. So that basically led me on to a personal kind of journey and exploration of what does success successfully mean to me, and what did I really want out of life? And I never really asked myself those questions because I've been so busy going through the motions of, you know, land the top job, and get the master's, and top degree, and blah, blah, blah, and just really falling into those comparison traps of what everyone else think is successful. And, yeah, it turns out that what I wanted was quite different. So I ended up studying NLP and meditation, and that led me into really trying to figure out, well, how can I share all these amazing things that I'm learning with other people, which then basically that means becoming a coach. And then I moved from London to Sydney. I was like, I want to coach. This is amazing. This has changed my life. And no one gave a crap. Yeah. Because, A, I had no networks there, and B, my resume said marketing, and I was trying to get a job in HR, and everyone was like, nah, you're at Stevie Says Marketing. And so the only way I could do the work that I wanted to do and actually support other people with what were, quite frankly, life-changing techniques, I mean, I totally went through a quarter-life crisis on this journey, and, yeah, it was to start my own business. So I had absolutely no clue. I had no networks. I, you know, really didn't have... I didn't have much to kind of start from, but I managed to negotiate a part-time senior marketing role in a Fortune 500, which left me this one precious day to explore how can I make something of this. And that has grown, and here we are today, where I'm now three days a week around my two- and four-year-old, and the rest, as they say, is history. But, yeah, it was a very unconventional route to entrepreneurship.
Speaker 1I hadn't realized how similar our stories actually are. That's crazy. That's crazy. I know. Quarter-life crisis, landing a job that you thought was going to be a dream job, but actually really, really wasn't, and wanting to do really awesome stuff in the world. Also, not even expecting to be an entrepreneur. My parents were entrepreneurs. There was no way I was going to go and do the same thing as them. Oh, funny. Because it looked horrendous. And so, here I am. Oops. So, yeah, it's really amazing that we have such similar backgrounds. Okay, so, you know what? I'm really curious today, because I know we have people listening to this podcast. You're at various levels of success in their business. I also know we have a few newbies in the room listening. So, I'm curious to know whether you still remember your first client or two. Yep.
Speaker 2What was that like? So, really interestingly, because I've pivoted and changed my niche several times, actually, since I first started in my business journey. And I think the one thing I'll say about that is, you know, getting specific on what you want to sell now is the number one way to get hired and get booked and get booked solid. But it doesn't mean that you have to stick to the same thing until kingdom comes. So, just know that you can evolve over time and you will evolve over time. But where I started, I mean, I think my very first coaching client was literally a friend of my husband's. And actually, I started more in kind of training and development. So, I was running workshops way longer. Way more before I kind of got back into the swing of coaching one-on-one because I missed it. But I actually started off thinking, I'm going to be like, I'm going to get into the leadership corporate space because that's the area I know. That's the environment I know. And I'm going to teach people, you know, communication techniques and personal development and all these amazing things. That's where I started. But, I mean, it was literally like how I landed my first few clients was tapping into the strategy that actually I teach my clients today. And that is the who knows who strategy. Because when you're coaching, you're coaching your clients. And when you move to a foreign country with zero networks, the first question you must ask yourself is, well, who do I know? Who may know someone that has access to my ideal clients? And literally, that is how I started. So, hence, getting a client through my husband. But, you know, it's really like who has access to the audience you're looking to reach? Who does something different to you? And that is the strategy that has served me ever since. And as I said, it's the exact framework I teach my clients today because it is the easiest, simplest way to tap into. It's the easiest way to tap into your lowest hanging fruit opportunities and position them as a win-win.
Speaker 1Yeah, because you've often already got a bit of know, like, and trust already built up within your network anyway. So, you're not trying to work really hard with the social media content to try and build that trust factor up. It was just a bit more of a slam dunk at that point. Totally. That's so cool. So, it sounds as though what you're saying is when you're first starting out and at any stage in business, really, it's a case of deciding what you're going to sell now and knowing that it's not a deal. It's not a tattoo. Then it gets to change because that was also my problem. I kept thinking, you know, I'm going to have to commit to everything. I'm going to have to commit to this one thing forever. Like, for the next 10 years of my life, I have to nail it. I have to get it so perfect first time around. And obviously, that's just not the case. Tell me a bit more about how you help your clients nail that no-brainer messaging.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, yeah, how I support my clients is really helping them to clarify their positioning, master their messaging, so they can be seen. There's that go-to in the industry and an absolute no-brainer. And I will say that there's always so much resistance to nailing the things that make the biggest difference because the only way to be seen as a no-brainer is to get really, really specific around the things that your ideal clients actually give a crap about. And most people are skirting around the edges because they're trying to see, well, who could I potentially attract? And I want to keep my options open. And I want to ensure that I could appeal technically, in theory, to as many people as possible. But in doing that, they create messaging that tends to be more on the side of generic, vague, broad. Might be for me. I'm not really sure. And we end up with just a ton of fence-sitters thinking, I'll maybe check that out one day or, yeah, maybe, you know, later when I have more time or whatever else. And it's not that, oh, my good God, tell me where to sign up response that we all want because we haven't got into that specificity. And the detail that really is relating to the things that that group of people want more than anything else. So it really, more than anything else, it's about peeling the layers and stripping it back and actually getting to the core of, but what is actually the thing that you provide in terms of solutions and what is actually the impact on their lives in terms of the things they care about most and how can you express and communicate that? And when you nail that, you know, you literally have people move from maybe to, to sit up and pay attention and tell me whether, whether I'll sign up. So, you know, a lot of people are out in this industry, in the coaching industry selling, you know, fitness, mindset, well-being, confidence. Cool. Awesome. I'll look you up if ever I want to increase my well-being, you know, whereas instead.
Speaker 1You have to look on your face right now, it says it all.
Speaker 2And quite expressive, I'm so glad we did this on video as well, but, you know, if instead you really allow yourself to own a, own your brilliant and have a specialism, and instead of being a women's wellbeing coach, you were someone who, you know, showed women how to have the ability to jump on a trampoline without worrying about their pelvic floor, because they've had kids. Suddenly you're going to get those types of women, sit up and go, tell me more, I can jump on the trampoline and not worry about peeing my pants, you know, so whatever the target audience is, we have to get to the crux of it. You know, another funny example. I'd love to share is, you know, we could talk about fitness and we could talk about health and we could talk about nutrition, but if you're telling a man that he could potentially lose his man boobs in just a few short months, finally ask that hot girl he's been stalking out on a date, well it's a slam dunk yes, you know, so the difference between bent sitting to jumping over the fence to say, oh my God, sign me up now, is the detail, always, every time.
Speaker 1I just love this so much because, and I'm laughing a lot because also the other thing The other thing here is when it's so specific even if you're not the relevant person for it because i wouldn't fit either of those two avatars or those two right messages you just shared there but i bet i could find a couple of people that could because you're being specific enough and that's when the referrals come through exactly even if you've never worked that person directly the referrals come through them anyway um because of that level of specificity and it is hard i understand when people get stuck with the idea of i could help everybody everything like nlp is a great example of that i could help them solve every problem they possibly have on the planet with nlp and you could probably yeah
Speaker 2but it's really terrible that's bloody hard to market isn't it i mean that's the thing it's like you know and here's kind of the difference as well like when you're in person having conversations you can make it relevant to whoever it is you're speaking to there's so much flexibility in that which is why ultimately sales conversations sales calls are always going to be more powerful than any sales page ever could be because you're relating it back uniquely to that person's core desires and you know and struggles right now and you can always you know even though we niche even though we position ourselves as an expert in a specific area you can always say yes to clients who might sit slightly outside of that you know area and i always say it's like fishing for tuna and you might catch a sardine you get to choose if you keep the sardine that comes through um and keep it as you know a tasty bonus appetizer or chuck it back in the sea but you know the point being is every time you're sitting in front of your computer thinking about what do i say online what do i share what do i sell today it is bloody hard work if you haven't really defined who it is you want to speak to and what exactly is your sell and how you help so from a marketing perspective you are making it easy for more people to say a no-brainer yes to you then if you are kind of just as i said skirting around um the edges and trying to be broader
Speaker 1and and you know have a wider appeal yeah absolutely i love it so when my clients do this they nail the messaging piece and then you can see how they skyrocket their sales as a result of that even though they've been skirting around nailing the messaging thing actually getting specific enough for months sometimes and then finally they're like okay i've given right i'll just i'll just do that then and see what happens and they're like oh my gosh i have people messaging me i've got calls booked i've got people out the blue on my linkedin like that's the sort of stuff they're then reporting back like yeah of course why did you do that three months ago yes and they're
Speaker 2literally saying oh my gosh it was effortless sale like it i mean just last night i had a group call in my magnetic selling program and one of my clients who's literally just joined two three weeks ago was saying how she's already landed two what a one clients and in her own words they were no brandy esters oh my god holly one of them even said how do i pay you on the phone call that's never happened to me before and you know these are people who'd booked calls with her who she didn't know and that was the most exciting part because so many of us in the early stages we're relying on referrals and typically you know the people that are hiring us the ones we already know and have a relationship with and one of the most exciting things ever to happen i actually did an instagram reel on this the other day is when a complete stranger buys from you and it's like oh my god you know that means my message actually resonates with the right people enough for them to reach out and say hey can i find out more and that's when we know we've nailed it
Speaker 1yeah that's so true what other mistakes do you find people make with their messaging that obviously specificity is one of them what others have you noticed that we should be flagging to our listeners right now making this mistake too think about it yeah so another big one is you know not
Speaker 2everyone in your target market or in your target demographic or however you're choosing to segment your audience is an ideal client and if you are finding that you are having a lot of people basically waste your time and they're reaching out to you and they're like oh my god i'm not going to do this and they're not and they're kind of tire kickers and they're never wanting to commit and they're definitely not how yes is then you need to consider if you are actively messaging the people who are ready ready to change ready to invest and that is not everyone you know there's going to be people who will take longer and need more time and they're just not quite there yet so we want to say in our messaging be reflecting that back in all of our copy in our content this is for you if you know right now you cannot go another second without knowing you know how to de-stress at the end of the day from your corporate job otherwise you are you know can end up slapping your boss in the face or whatever i cannot go one more moment without knowing how to say no instead of yes when someone piles extra work on my desk yet again you know so whatever it is in that moment where it has to come to the point where i do not want to continue like this anymore they're the people we want to reach out to and they're the people who are going to be the ones who are going to be the ones who are going to be the people we want to make it easy to you know take the next step with us so i think a lot of people are not quite nailing the messaging from what stage of readiness are their audience at as well and instead of just are you a woman professional who hates the job yes are you ready to do something about it this job pays me well you know so then that's not your ideal client um so that's that's
Speaker 1i totally agree with you i i love i love that we're talking about this the other way that i see this is you're trying to get somebody who's chilling and you're trying to get somebody who's chilling on the sofa most days or most evenings has no interest in getting fit and running a marathon and you're trying to convince them that they want to go and train to go and run a marathon i'm just sitting here on the sofa like why are you trying to get me to buy your coaching
Speaker 2to run a marathon like are you crazy a 5k run would be a massive achievement right now
Speaker 1yeah literally and really we want to be talking to people that've been doing like the 10k 15k runs are like i don't think i can catch the marathon like it's going to be really hard work and probably some proper training to be able to make this happen they're the people that are problem aware more solution aware and more ready to reverse but i definitely see this when coaches are putting um social media content out there that says like why you need a mindset coach or why mindset coach is so important but the mindset coaching is so important like you're literally convincing the dude sitting on the sofa right now to go for a run and it's not gonna happen yeah
Speaker 2yeah and we don't want to be that point of having to educate or convince or rationalize or persuade the person that wants the thing that we're trying to sell them so i think kind of brings me on to a little segues nicely thank you rose on to another point which is you know most of us are too many steps ahead in our messaging from where our audience are at right now you know they probably haven't heard of the fancy pants tool that you were so excited to finally be certified in you know so if we're just trying to sell this amazing tool it's just jargon it means nothing how does that tool help them change their lives in a way that they really want that feels elusive to them right now how does it help eliminate something that they just can't get rid of that they can't stand anymore you know how does it help their children sleep through the night it's just a very topical example for me yeah you know like how how does that work for me how does it improve things for me that's what people care about the most and i think one of the biggest gaps is we're not giving the context of how things help so you know we're going to come back to that example of nlp now nlp can be incredible i've i've literally studied with the co-creator john grinder himself i am all a massive advocate of nlp but if i just talk about nlp nlp nlp which most people online are doing you know watch the eyes glaze over this is where you get those polite blank stares instead of oh my gosh tell me where to sign up you know responses that we desire and it's because of no context you know if i'm talking about nlp in the context of you know being able to improve your relationship you know i'm talking about nlp and i'm talking about nlp and i'm talking about relationship um you know with your partner in a way where you feel they're actually listening to you and you're able to communicate what you really want without it constantly you know going to a cycle of arguments maybe you know that's a context that's specific and it's relevant to a particular group of people um you know again confidence is a great context but get specific is it the confidence to negotiate the salary you know you've been deserving for about two years you know suddenly nlp is like oh that's interesting you know we can position it as the missing piece but most people are not being contextually specific or relevant and so they're wildly missing the mark and expecting their audience to connect the dots if we're expecting our audience to connect the dots as how this thing helps me with where i'm at on the couch right now to use your analogy they're not going to do that they're just going to keep scrolling on the phone instead it's too hard yeah i totally agree with you i think the
Speaker 1other element to this is also taking a really passionate stand for why your approach maybe is nlp is better than others and i think that's a really good point and i think it's a really good others for your particular idle client they've tried other things are they really going to believe that nlp is going to work for them maybe not maybe that's a massive block for them and actually believing that they're going to come and work with you um and i sometimes see people hesitant to say do you know what the thing i have here is going to work better than everything else you've tried and i believe that because otherwise if you don't believe it why are you doing it why i'm using it why i'm teaching it um i think people are a bit hesitant let's say to to fly that flag um yeah and that's the thing that the switch that i made about two years ago now when i said you know what launching is a pile of i'm gonna swear right now let's stop doing that please people let's do evergreen instead and oh my gosh did i piss people off and annoy them at the same time had all of like my idle clients just flow in it was it was fascinating to see that happen so i think we've also got to be a bit open to annoying people here and there with our messaging what would you say on
Speaker 2that what firstly i'm so what firstly i'm so refreshing to hear the word bollocks because living in australia as a brit you just don't hear that often enough it's one thing i would say in response to that the second thing um So, you know, what we've got to remember is what people are buying from you is your confidence and your certainty and your conviction in what you sell and what you teach and what you deliver. And if you are not embodying that, then there's always going to be a question mark in the back of that other person's mind. You know, we can't be nervous or hesitant or unsure of, oh, can I really say this or not? You know, that is, we're picking all of those cues up subconsciously. When we're in a conversation with someone, we feel their energy and their presence. They aren't really sold on their own thing that they're trying to sell, right? So that's number one. The second is, so I teach magnetic selling and it's the very art of magnetizing is going to involve you also repelling, right? That's how magnets work. And people forget the repelling part. And, you know, we need to totally embrace the repelling part because we only want to work with the people who are ideal for us, the people who are ready to change, the people who are going to throw themselves in hole. And the people that really are on our wavelength and who we gel with, like, I love, um, Rose just recently spoke to one of my paid groups and talked about her no dickheads allowed policy.
Speaker 1I was about to mention that, but I thought, do I say that?
Speaker 2I don't know. Well, I've just said it for you. Well, it was stark. It was memorable. And it's true. Like, you know, we, we do not want to be trying to appeal to everyone because not everyone's going to be the right fit. And when it is the right fit, both of you. You get the best results. And what too many people forget is your success and your results are your client's results and vice versa. So set yourself up to make it as easy as possible for the right people to come into your world and resonate with your message, because either people will love what you're saying and the Alleluia, because I hate launches too. Or they'll be like, I really love launches and great. They'll go and find the coach that teaches how to do amazing life launches and everyone wins, right? So I think just be less afraid of that because it actually is doing you. And everyone in your audience, a massive service, when you really allow yourself to stand for things you believe in and have a voice around the things that you don't and have that opinion. I mean, I see every day, every day, uh, messages about, you know, screw the niche. You know, we don't need a niche, like you are your niche and oh my gosh, I could, I could do a whole podcast episode on just this, like till the cows come home. I even started a content series on Instagram called. You're screwed. The niche mindset is costing you sales, FYI, you know, and so it's causing so much confusion because what people keep confusing is your niche and your personal brand and not the same thing. Yeah. So if people keep thinking, oh, but if I choose a niche, then it's only showing one tiny little facet of me and I'm multi-passionate and multidimensional, you know, multi this great showcase that in your brand. But if you didn't have a clear positioning and make it really easy for who you serve and how you help and allow yourself to be seen. I'd say. Like have the courage to be seen as a specialist. You will miss out on sales. Yeah. Yeah. And we can all think of that in terms of our own examples, you know, like just really simple ones, you know, like, um, if you're a vegan, I'm not, but if you're a vegan, right. And there's the option to go and work with a nutritionist, who's also a vegan and nutritionist, who's not, who are you going to choose? The one who understands your specific set of circumstances and can cater to your specific dietary needs, you know? It's just as simple as that. You're making it easy and that's it really.
Speaker 1I totally love this the, the way I often describe this whole personal brand messaging versus niching and offers and everything is the, your personal brand and your, the brand around your, the messaging around your brand and who you are as a person or entrepreneur is like the house. And then you've got all these offers, the doors to the house and those doors might change here and there, and therefore your messaging might change here and there. And that's okay. But like you, generally speaking will evolve. And maybe you shift a little bit, but you kind of stay the same lot of like you, you are you at the end of the day, but the offers might change a lot over 10 or 20 years of running your business. And it just gives you a little bit more flexibility in that. Um, yeah, I totally disagree that you are, you are your niche. Yes, you are.
Speaker 2But also, no, I mean, I think both of us have come from, you know, backgrounds of brand strategy and business strategy and, you know, I have seen millions of dollars wasted being thrown away. And I think that's, I think that's a really important thing. I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing.
Speaker 1And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing.
Speaker 2And I think that's a really important thing.
Speaker 1And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing.
Speaker 2And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing.
Speaker 1And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing.
Speaker 2And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing.
Speaker 1And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. And I think that's a really important thing. know unreasonable demands that I deal with most days from a two to four year old um but having that balance has been so amazing and ultimately this is what it's all for you know this is what it's all for like you know I get to decide what hours I work who I spend the time with during the day I can literally walk away from my desk and go and be the one that picks up my kids and I can be there on a Wednesday morning when my daughter's doing a little school concert or whatever it might be and there is nothing more rewarding than that like that is true success so I would say just you know think about that longer-term vision of what it means to have success for you and having that time with your family um the focus is the thing uh that will get you there 100% and the support ask for support and that doesn't just mean directly in your business some of the best support that I have is my cleaner I love meals you know like people that are just supporting my lifestyle so that I can have more time on my business as well yeah I was going to ask you about the home
Speaker 1support too because that's something that we've really tapped into once we moved to Lisbon last year and it's been amazing to have a cleaner twice a week meals in the fridge ready to go um and so I just want more of that I've got a some incredible entrepreneur friends in the city as well they've got PAs and they've got like amazing just amazing support yeah great let's have more of that don't have to wait until we have kids to be able to do that yes um do it now which actually is the same thing I think when it comes to focus what you said there around just simplifying things and just focusing in the business you don't necessarily have to wait for kids or maybe a sick parent or something for that to actually need to have to happen because I totally agree with you often entrepreneurs will flick from one thing to another and not really giving it enough time to bed in and then decide yeah it doesn't work or I've tried that too many times and I don't want to do it anymore and instead even though even though focus might feel boring initially focus is actually gives you a lot of freedom I found and yes I've been running the same darn group coaching program for three years now but it works so why change it um and that focus gives me so much freedom to do other things so yeah if you're listening to this and you don't have kids and you don't have a sick parent and you don't have other things that may be forcing you to give focus to your business and simplify stuff then do it now because you're probably going to have a lot of time to do it going to experience a pretty big growth spurt as a result of that and also like the whole point of
Speaker 2being an entrepreneur really is that you get to choose how you spend your time and with whom right so even like if you have an amazing passion of some kind then you know make sure that you're spending time on that now and and make your business work around that you know if you love to travel if you love to run marathons or you know like to walk dogs or whatever it is like you know pottery I don't care what it is but you know if you get used now to kind of achieving what you're achieving on a part-time quote-unquote schedule um that a you're going to have so much more richness in your life but b if your circumstances do change from a family perspective then you're going to be totally set up already um yeah to roll with that so yeah but I think the biggest the biggest thing that women struggle with in particular is asking for support and help and thinking I should or I could do it all by myself thankfully I don't have that problem yeah you put it now you're fine
Speaker 1you're fine

Speaker 2covered I think I think just remember that the sale is sealed before the offer is made so the way to have people really you know literally show up in your inbox is really all down to how you have resonated with them and captured that attention online because people first have to buy into you before they will ever buy from you so don't skip the fundamentals as I've been saying a few times the content you're messaging all of that can literally remove the need for a pitch um and for the sale itself so that's where I'd be encouraging you to focus your time and your effort I love that thank you thank you thank you for listening to the grow
